brilliant, intelligent, kind, cares about his students, makes class fun, very nice
adorable!
Very organized, thorough, passionate, really cares about his work, i also agree that he is adorable! He picks good books for the class to read and leads great discussions where no one feels intimidated or pressured. Class participation is important in this class and makes for an interesting class.
He is a real asset to temple- and a cutie. hee, hee. Ditto to previous posts.
Is he HOT!
I absolutely LOVE him. He is probably one of the nicest professors and he is extremely helpful. A lot of his quizzes are just a few random definitions from the readings--which, are all books and interesting.
i really like that everyone thinks he's hot...but really, he is just to adorable to be called hot! lol. but he deserves to be desribed as anything positive!!! great professor, friend, and person in general. wish i could take his class again!
He is a very great teacher! I enjoyed every moment in his class. Every friday is discussion day. Discussion days are very VERY EASY! Show up and listen to debates. GREAT! I recommend this for everyone! I love his class! Also, he is adorable. hehe
GREAT professor. Very friendly. Very helpful. Exams were not challenging if you attended class and did the readings. Helped students constantly and made things crystal clear if they were not. Wish he was teaching another class, so I could take him again. One of the best professors I've ever had.
Even if the material is hard to understand, he makes everything very clear and very accessible. He is also one of the sweetest teachers I have ever had. I would love to take another class of his.
great teacher, easy work, cares about his students. would recommend
if you pay attention read materials and take good notes this class is an easy A. I failed one of his quiz but still manahged to pass. Great teacher!!!
very easy class. no seriously so easy its not even funny. for stats it was actually some what interesting and he explains everything very well.
Excellent professor in every sense. You'll learn and you'll love him.
great teacher, easy class
One of the best teachers I've ever had! The class discussions are intelligent, and everyone feels free to participate. The Books he chooses are very engaging, and make you want to go to class and discuss. He's one of the nicest people i've ever met, I'd absolutely recommend him.
This class was interesting although it does get boring at times. I probably would have been more engaged if I took the class at a later time but I would recommend this class because he helps you out and he helps you learn
Great teacher... he will help develop your critical thinking skills and he's very helpful in doing so.
I had Mike for three different classes, intro to soc, race and racism, and stat. He was really interesting and engaging and extremely helpful. Hes such a great person and I highly recommend him as a professor!
He is an excellent teacher. Very good at getting you to think critically. sometimes frustrating when you can figure things out, but when you figure it out the light bulb goes off you feel good. Def take any of his classes. He actually makes an effort to learn names
Dr. Altimore is a wonderful professor. He'll go out of his way to help you understand the material and succeed in his course. He's also a really nice guy, with a general interest in his students well being. I plan on taking him again if the opportunity presents itself.
I had him for two SOC classes, 1176 & 0825. He is a excellent teacher who genuinely cares about teaching and grades fairly. His teaching is really interesting, filled with examples and unbiased. He really works with you, great guy!
Professor Altimore is a very nice, personable guy. He'll not only learn your name, he'll remember it from the start. He starts basic, and works his way up. Stat is a hard subject to teach, but uses a book that is written as if it's actually giving the lesson. I highly recommend him.
Very Good guy!! Awesome and very caring
He was really easy. Also, he's very nice. Way too biased and far left thogh. However, I find if you disagree with him he doesn't always get offended. It offen sparks debate and he enjoys the participation. I just felt he was way to political and biased though. Preached many things that were simply untrue. I'd take him tho for an easy class.
Professor Altimore was def. my favorite professor at Temple University. The way he handles everything, from student input to teaching, restores not only your faith in the college professor but people as well. I dont mean that sarcastically - he really is a genuinely nice, caring person.
one of the best professors at temple. he's very helpful and is willing to work with you to make sure you get the grade you deserve. would definitely recommend him.
Nice guy but difficult class. Lots of readings and if you don't read, it will show. Not very interesting subject either..
He is a great guy. Very nice and will help you with anything. Read the book, go to class (take notes) and you will pass without a doubt. Pay attention to examples because he uses them, but changes the numbers on the test. Awesome guy and a great teacher. Def recommend!
This class requires lots of reading, but the readers are fairly interesting. Make sure you read and pay attention in class. What he goes over is crucial and most often times on the test. He does put things on the test to make sure you read and it's clear who reads and who doesn't. Tests were fairly easy, definitions and essay questions.
Michael Altimore was absolutely amazing. One of my favorite Temple professors. His name should be Michael Ultimate.
Introduction to sociology was like watching the same movie for an hour three times a week. We spoke about the same things and had the same conversation each day. On the test he takes off points and doesn't tell you why, makes you wonder how closely he read it. Otherwise he's a great guy, very entertaining and lovely.
This class is EASY. If you know stat, it will be a breeze, and very boring! Very little mathematics is involved. Every fri. is devoted to group presentations--leaving just m/w for teaching. altimore is very kind, willing to help those who need it. if you aren't good at math but need this class, take this prof!
He makes it very clear that his first obligation is to the students and wants everyone in the class to do as well as possible. That said, the class is no cakewalk. He definitely expects you to do the work on your own time and prepare yourself for his tests. He gives everyone the grade they deserve. Overall, great professor.
As long as youre not illiterate this class is easy and actually really interesting, butif youhave any type of conservative views whatsoever, this class will be extremely frusterating for you since he teaches it with extremely politically liberal undertones. but then again, what temple prof. doesnt. He is really helpful though and class isnt boring
Michael is awesome! He is very entertaining and as long as you do the reading and participate in class you'll get an A.
Really great professor. Extremely thorough and willing to stop everything to ensure that any given student with a question fully understands. I think I learned more about math in this class than in all other math classes I've ever had. Really makes you look at the world and statistics in a new way. Take him for sure!
Professor Altimore is a great guy, class discussions are always interesting, and the assigned readings are also genuinely interesting. If you actually read the books, you should do fine in this class.
I took Social Inequality with Michael, and he is obviously a wonderful person who cares deeply about the course, the books, and his students. My only critique is that he could be more firm in the classroom setting: some students rambled for 20+ minutes on non-related tangents which was annoying. All in all, great guy and great class.
Amazing teacher. Very friendly and kind. He's willing to break everything down for you and the discussions in the class are worth it. Just do the reading, which isn't that much and the class is easy.
WORST CLASS EVER. WAS NEVER ON TOPIC.. LEARNED NOTHING IN THIS CLASS AT ALL!
Without a doubt, Michael Altimore was the greatest professor I have ever had.
By far one of the best professors I've had at Temple. While he can get a bit distracted, he encourages us to truly think, promotes analytic thinking and never makes anyone feel stupid. You have to read, but they're great books. His tests can be hard, but he does his best to help everyone pass. Read, participate and you're set.
I wouldn't recommend him as a gen ed professor. I would say the class is easy overall, but the tests have very specific questions on them and the books are long so there's a good chance you'll miss information he puts on the tests. I didn't mind going to class though, I just wouldn't take him if you're an A student. His tests might screw you.
Amazing. He changed my life and world view forever. Eye opening as any class or experience I've ever had. If you need to get the race Gen Ed out of the way, Michael Altimore is the man for you.
He's nice guy but he's not a very good teacher. You don't really learn much about sociology. I learned so much more in my high school sociology class than in his class. His tests are literally impossible and half the class doesn't finish them because they're all essay/short answer questions and he wants so much detail there just isn't enough time
Prof. Altimore is an awesome guy. He really cares about his students, and is always available for any questions or concerns. While the material may not be concise like other classes, you'll definitely come away with the class at least thinking about the world you live in, even if you don't agree with his views. Great teacher, recommended.
The best professor I have ever had. Genuinely cares about his students. Incredibly intelligent, yet approachable and very personable. Your entire outlook on things will change from this course. Professor Altimore creates a very comfortable environment yet you will actually LEARN. Absolutely take him if given the opportunity.
Possibly the best prof I've had. Very interesting material in the class. As long as you read the books and come to class regularly, you're almost guaranteed an A.
Great great great guy. Workload is small and he really cares about his students. Loves participation. If you participate even moderately and share in his enthusiasm he will reward you. He picks easy/relatable material as well. Take him.
.Great great great guy. Workload is small and he really cares about his students. Loves participation. If you participate even moderately and share in his enthusiasm he will reward you. He picks easy/relatable material as well. Take him
Prof. Altimore has been one of the best professors I have had at Temple. Really nice, always offering help if you need it. The class does have a lot of reading- 6 books which were all pretty long. The tests are kind of hard, but if you read the books you should be fine. If you're trying to learn something, definitely take this class.
Dr. Altimore is a great professor who is thoroughly interested in his students. He assigns a lot of books, but they are worthwhile. Although you could get by without reading them. He's funny, & interesting. As long as you attend and show interest you're guaranteed a good grade.
Dr. Altimore assigns a lot of reading, but it's not that bad. His tests can be difficult, put as long as you do the readings and take some notes in class you'll do well! Make sure to participate in class discussions because he said that if he knows you know what you're talking about, he won't punish you if you don't do well on an exam!
Participation is key especially if you are not a good test taker. Keep on top with the readings because if you fall behind it is tough to catch up. He often spends too much time on a book and then we end up with a lot of reading at the end. His tests are hard to finish and involve a lot of detail.
Most amazing professor I have ever had. He really makes you think and it made me excited to go to class each day. I would take all of his classes if I could. He definitely looks for great writing skills and his tests are entirely essays and short answers. He is so understanding, kind, and amazing at what he does. Most definitely would recommend
Great guy! He creates a good atmosphere for discussion. Participate! The exams are in short essay form. Attend class and read the material and you will do well. He is very approachable.
If you ever need to take any elective or major class in CLA, take intro to soc or any other class with Prof. A. He genuinely loves discussion and teaches in a socratic style (no lesson plans). There are tests but they're not important as long as he sees you have read the material and can connect the concepts in class. Don't worry about grades
Amazing professor. Gives lots of books but they're actually very interesting. Pay attention and participate if you want a good grade. No lesson plans or tests or lectures. Just three essays throughout the semester. If you show interest and write semi-decent essays, you'll get an A. Don't take a class directly after his though, he tends to run over.
Professor Altimore is absolutely fantastic. He's a great person and a good teacher who wants you to succeed. The class I took (Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences) was maybe the easiest and most enjoyable math course I have ever taken.
He makes class super interesting and runs it in a very unusual style. Take good notes and do ALL the readings (there are a lot but the tests are all about testing if you read). 3 exams and an easy group presentation. What I like about him is if you speak in class a lot and know your stuff, it doesn't matter how you test. So make sure you talk!
He is the best Soc professor I've had at Temple. Class is highly discussion based and as long as you talk some he will make sure you're grade reflects that. The only book you really need to read is the novel first assigned to class and the rest are all just general theory. Highly recommend him he's so knowledgeable and kind.
Theres a lot of essays. He gives everyone an A- to A+ tho so its an easy A if you just submit the essay. the classes are extremely discussion based and you have to read about 7 non fictions books. its a lot of reading but you can skim most of the time. he's super nice and caring and is very intelligent. he understands his students. Recommend him
Amazing professor! Super nice, down to earth guy. He has a very laid back teaching style and he prefers for the students to lead discussions. I will say that his papers can be a bit time consuming because he likes you to connect your argument to several of the texts you read throughout the semester. Overall though I would definitely recommend him!
This is my favorite professor at Temple so far! He has millions of interesting stories and is the kindest person. We had to read 6 books total, so be sure to do some independent reading and take notes, because the reading schedule will probably not follow the syllabus. If you read closely, youll ace the class. (Talk to him if youre into film!)
The class is discussion-based and the topics that were covered are interesting. Sometimes reading so many books for a class can be annoying, but the books in this class weren't that bad and you need to read them in order to do well on exams. If you take Altimore, make sure you're comfortable participating since it's a part of your final grade.
He is the absolute best! The class looks really intimidating because it's called Quantitative Methods in Social Sciences but it's mostly statistics. It's the most enjoyable math class you can take. You have to read but the books are interesting so it's not bad. He's a really interesting guy and really tries to relate stats to real life.
An absolute sweetheart! He loves to incorporate soc. to every-day life, which allows you to take away so much from the class! Take notes as he lectures and while reading the books to prepare for the two exams. There's one easy current event and the final exam was take home! Make sure to participate and you'll bound to get an A.
Dr. Altimore is one of a kind! He is extremely insightful. I learned so much from taking his class. You can get an A if you: show up, do the readings, try your best to participate, take notes during the lectures, study for the exams (2 + a final), and do well on the group project. Also, he doesn't do lecture slides and his exams are short answer.
Best prof ever
I learned more from this professor than anyone else at Temple. Incredibly insightful- his lectures really changed the way I see the world. I'm so glad I took him. He has a knack for finding the most interesting and relevant texts to read, even recently published ones. If you're pre-health, his class covers many concepts that will be on the MCAT.
Altimore is by far the best professor Ive had at Temple. He creates a very comfortable environment for discussion and to ask questions. Hes a very sweet man and hes also quite funny. I always look forward to going to class and Im absolutely going to be taking more of his classes. Im actually sad to leave Intro to Soc, its a great class.
So far my favorite prof at Temple. He assigns a lot of readings but most of them actually are interesting and he discusses them at great length to make understandable. He truly cares about his students. 2 exams, 1 final and group proj. He threw in one pop quiz too (with like one question nothing too bad). Highly recommend Altimore.
a lot of your grade is based on readings and class discussions, but as long as you show up, you will do well.
he is very liberal and kind of makes the class about making students think the exact same way as him instead of opening it up for discussion, need to read 6 books which is super annoying and takes up a lot of time, need to show up to every class, the exams consist of class discussions and everything in books, doesnt post any grades
I have taken professor Altimore several times and he is by far- the absolute best prof ever. He is very insightful and genuinely wants to see you succeed. He even pushed back some deadlines if some students said they felt that they needed more time to consume the material. If you have the chance, take him. You won't regret it.
Prof. Altimore is a cute, old man that truly loves what he teaches and makes math enjoyable for those who absolutely despise it. I was not looking forward to taking a math GENed, but he made the class interesting with its connections to sociology and the real world. Lots of discussions, but only 2 tests and a paper final. Totally recommend!
AMAZING TEACHER! Easy A if you do the reading and pay attention in class. Personally I didnt take any notes during class but most people did, so I would recommend that. He is hilarious and you learn a lot. This class changed how I look at the world and life, it was inspirational.
Professor Altimore was the greatest teacher Ive ever had he truly cares about his work and his students. Theres a lot of reading but the books he assigned were all amazing and we always had great discussions, if youre really shy this might not be the class for you as participation is a big factor. I would literally take him for ever class.
best professor out of all the profs at temple hands down
Altimore is so wonderful. If I could have taken more classes with him, I absolutely would have. He cares so much about his students and just wants them to succeed, and he has even adapted the course schedule when students were feeling overwhelmed. His courses are also extremely interesting and have really changed the way I think about things.
I had him online so I understand its different. There's nothing on canvas, no organization, and the syllabus is completely wrong. You have to show up to lectures to know what books to read and when. He will spend the entire lecture sharing his political views and then go over the required readings at the end, extremely hard to sit through.
He is incredibly kind and flexible with due dates on assignments. If you have any concerns, he is open to discuss them too. My main issue with the class is that he grades papers very harshly and on a curve. So some students will get Cs and some As. Keep this difficulty in mind when signing up for this intro class.
The harkness method Professor Altimore uses allowed me to learn more from one of his classes than two weeks worth of any class I've taken this semester or really in my life. You will learn IMMENSE AMOUNTS of information through conversation, not even realizing that you're studying, but instead just invested in interested conversation. He is AMAZING
Professor Altimore is really good at leading a discussion class like this. He's also approachable, caring, and funny. I felt like I was in the best philosophy class at times. Wish I could take it again! WARNING: If he's still doing the Painted Bird, that book is DARK.
Wonderful guy. Could never say a semi-bad thing about him. Class is discussion-based, but if you don't talk he's okay with it. 3 essays due throughout the semester, so either talk in class OR do well on essays and you'll pass. Content is really interesting and he is super passionate about it and about your opinions. Wish I could take him again.
He assigns a lot of books to read throughout the semester so get ready to read. Not a tough grader because he's more of a "grades don't matter" guy and incredibly understandable. We were graded on three papers with each paper analyzing 2-3 of our books and/or a movie. Really nice guy and I recommend talking to him outside of class.
Have never rated a professor before but for Dr. Altimore I had to. He is genuinely the kindest and most caring professor. Discussions are fun and interesting. My attendance was abysmal but if you put creative effort and passion into the few papers you'll end with an A. Overall great class.
Harkness table/conversation style class lectures. Possibly the best professor at Temple. He is amazing. Look no further, he is the one.
Professor Altimore was a very nice professor and you could genuinely tell that he cared for his students. This is a discussion-heavy class, so be prepared. There were only three exams and one project. The exams aren't that difficult and you will pass as long as you demonstrate your knowledge of the readings and the group project was also easy.
Loved Michael !!! He assign little to no homework. And the homework would be to read and finish chapters for class discussion. Very amazing and caring professor take him and TALK!!
Very nice guy! But, WAY TOO MUCH READING! If reading is not your think, take class with another professor cause hes nice, but not worth it. Very liberal, if thats a pro or con for you. Just like so so so much reading.
TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM! The classes are discussion-based. He's one of the nicest professors I've met at Temple and is super caring. He's a pretty easy grader too. We only have to write two papers (less than eight pages) for the entire semester
Rambles and makes virtually no sense.
Honestly, I loved how passionate he was about the subjects, and the books we read held a lot of important lessons. It was just a lot of reading, and I could never keep up. He also never posted grades, so I always wondered what my grade was. Overall good class, just not the easiest.
Dr. Altimore is such a sweet soul! However, he made us read 6 novels this semester-- and it was just an intro class. I wish we did more like lecture based learning, like most intro classes. SO MUCH READING, very easy to fall behind. He is also very liberal. Participation matters and he takes attendance. Only take him if you love reading!
Professor Altimore heavily relies on in class discussion and reading/writing for the coursework. He is a fair grader and is so nice, attentive and understanding. Great class, I learned so much!
Nice enough guy, but very pushy on his liberal opinions. His lectures depend solely on the 6 NOVELS he has everyone read. This is an intro level class but extremely heavy on reading. I tended to get bored in his class because he rambles often. There is no structure to the course other than him giving his opinion and making everyone agree with him.
He forms all of his classes around having a discussion where it feels like you're all just sitting in a circle and learning from each other. He knows exactly what information he wants to impart on you but let's the students figure it out. Lots of light-bulb moments and mind-blowing revelations. He leaves you wanting more.
Prof. Altimore shows a dedication and care to his pedagogy that allows students to do well. He has a breadth of knowledge that helps you learn about a wide scope of topics within Sociology. The readings can be challenging, but his exploration of them are very thorough. My only complaint- I wish the class was longer!
Very good teacher, He is older and may ramble from time to time. he very sweet and understand to outside issues happening to students. There were lots of books for this course but not his fault he required to teach a certain number of things. This was a required class for my major. Class is big on open discussion so I'd be present if I were you.
Super sweet professor. He tends to ramble a lot. Most of the information you need to know comes from the text provided and in class discussions. Three exams, all essay based. Fairly easy if you skim/read through books and attend class.
Soft spoken, sweet professor. Very reading intensive and a political class at times.
Professor Altimore was so sweet! A genuine caring professor! The class is primarily graded on the three exams, participation, an a group project. There is a decent amount of hefty books, but most of them are genuinely interesting and relevant. I would advice to keep on top of your reading though so you can participate in class discussions.
Really sweet guy but course load was insane. Overall he just wants to see you read the 6 books assigned but I would avoid taking him if you have a lot of writing intensive classes. 7-9 page essays due each month.
Dr. Altimore is an incredible professor! Super kind, passionate, and thoughtful. He centers his class around books and discussions, and exams are take-home essays. Be ready to read and write. Otherwise, the class was really thought-provoking and I really enjoyed it
I really enjoyed this class and thought it was pretty easy. Participation does matter here, so you want to talk during class. This professor does not put grades into canvas, but he also does not have many grades throughout the semester. The biggest grades are the three essays that I had over the semester, which analyzed the books we read.
Professor Altimore is a passionate instructor who makes the readings engaging. While discussion-heavy, the course is manageable with active participation. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep.
Michael is a great professor. This was one of my favorite classes and while it was a good amount of work at times, the information was really interesting and he picked great books for the class to read. Highly recommend.
Best. Class. Ever. This class is heavily discussion based so make sure to participate. Altimore wants to see everyone succeed and will make sure the entire class does well. Make sure you read it will help so much! I made so many friends in this class because of how much we have to participate. Exams are essays but are easily graded. Take Altimore.
Michael is by far the best professor I have ever had. He discourages all electronic use during the whole class, and it's entirely discussion based with hardly any assignments, so make sure you actually read (there are 6 books). The discussions and books are very political, but I loved it. Taking his class will be the best decision, thank me later!
Altimore is a great professor. He genuinely cares for his students and wants to make sure we all succeed. Classes are 100% discussion based, participation and attendance matters, there are about 3 essays and 6 books to read. He focuses on things we will use in the real world rather than basic sociology terms and teachings! Be warned:lots of reading
Though was a good professor and person until he said the N word with hard er in class.
One of the wors professors I've ever had tbh. I asked him for clearer feedback on my essay, which he gave no rubric btw, and he told me "you, like every other student, recieved the grade you deserved." Doesnt answer emails, yaps about meaningless things during class, just overall did not like him. Thank God I never have to see him again.
I was disappointed in his choice of material. He assigned essentially a self help book about how medication was ineffective in treating mental illness. I found this EXTREMELY irresponsible on his part. Exposing a vulnerable group of teens (mostly freshman freshly on their own experiencing a GLOBAL PANDEMIC) to this rhetoric was downright dangerous.
