pretty difficult but very interesting.you will learn a ton in here.don't come in hoping for an easy grade though. if you talk to him though, you should get some leverage on your grade. he brought mine up 2 or 3 points.
Nice guy. Passionate about the subject.
I really enjoyed this class. The lectures are very easy to understand and the readings were fairly easy. Dr. Alvard is very helpful if you're having trouble. He is an outspoken athiest, but he doesn't try to push his views and welcomes rational discussion and debate.
After first test never went to class, and I made a B on the second test. SUPER EASY. Puts all lecture slides online, and the test review. Tests are pretty easy, do need to study vocal, and pay attention to details on the different tribes. Interesting class, and you can teach yourself the information. Take him!
I would not recommend taking this class if you are not at all interested in Anthropology. He definitely knows his subject but skips around and powerpoints are not very helpful. The tests are mostly off the reading and the extra stuff he throws in during lectures. If you want to pass you need to go to class and study a lot.
Dr. Alvard is a interesting character- I love listening to him. He is not afraid to say what he thinks. It is fun to hear his worldly/non-conformist perspective. The lectures are easily understandable and the subject is very interesting-make you think about how you think/live.
It is essential to attend class. Nearly everything on the test comes from the lectures. I thought all of the lectures were really interesting but there is a lot of information to absorb with some of them and if you want to make good grades on the exams you'll have to study a lot and do some memorization. Dr. Alvard makes it very interesting though.
I loved his intro class! He makes it super interesting by including his own experiences working with people from across the globe. He definitely goes into a lot of detail, particularly on culture, but it's to be expected. The tests are not too hard. Just go to class and take notes. He even posts the power points. It's easy as high school.
Dr. Alvard is a very brilliant man and is super passionate about Anthropology, however the subject is very difficult to understand and he explains it in a very confusing manner that only he is able to understand. I had to Q-drop the class, first time ever, and I read the textbook and studied for hours. If your down to study and read a lot take him.
Alvard definitely knows his stuff when it comes to Anthropology, BUT, he is all over the place during his lectures and his lectures are super drawn out (long). He tries to cram so much stuff into TTH classes that it's information overload. Maybe if he has MWF classes it would be better... just be aware and be ready to devote a lot of time to class.
Dr. Alvard loves what he's teaching which makes the class go by way faster. I maybe used the textbook once and still got a B for the class. As long as you attend lecture and go over the study guide, it's very easy to do well. He also gives accounts of his personal experience in the field which made it more relatable. You will not regret taking this
Very difficult class. There is a clicker quiz for attendance each class. Tests are long and over very specific details. BEWARE THE SECTION OVER MONKEYS AND EVOLUTION
Dr. Alvard is incredibly smart and passionate about anthropology! There are clicker questions for attendance every single lecture so make sure you have perfect attendance. All of the exams were easy because the study guides were very thorough, so idk why other posts say they were specific. Also talks a lot about his own research. Overall great prof
Professor Alvard was a pretty good prof! MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY! You get clicker points every class and I have gotten B's on every test but have a 94 in the class based solely on clicker quizzes! There are 3 tests, 2 regular and 1 final and that's about it! I suck at tests, but his are pretty straight forward.
He is super easy to listen to in lecture but gets off topic a lot. Tests based mostly on lectures but the study guide literally covers everything. Clicker question every single day in class so do not miss!!! Usually no extra credit but if you read the chapters over the tribes (2 per test) and go to class you should be able to pass just fine
Really chill professor, knowledgeable and clearly interested in his own subject. Occasional quiz question in class, but nothing too hard. Paying attention in lecture without reading the textbook was enough for me to get a B.
Dr. Alvard is a really cool guy but he can be distracted during lectures. His power points are a little out of order sometimes which makes reviewing before the tests frustrating. Overall it was an easy class so I was fine but Dr. Alvard made it a bit more difficult than it needed to be.
Dr. Alvard was a very interesting professor! He liked talking about the tribes he's studied and loves to hear what students have to say about controversial topics. His tests come completely from his lectures, so just study the powerpoint slides and you'll get an A. The final is just another test (non cumulative).
one of my fav professors! test are straight from his lectures so pay attention. his lectures are very engaging and interesting because he has pictures of him and the tribes he lived with. he moves around a lot in class and makes funny movements. talks about politics sometimes.
I had to drop this class. (my own fault. I focused on other classes more) This is definitely not an easy A. Clicker quizzes are every class. Definitely have to read the books and attend lectures to pass the class. This class was harder than i imagined it would be so fair warning. Overall he is a good prof you just have to pay attention in class.
The lectures were pretty hard to pay attention to. There is six homework grades, a research paper, and two tests in the class.
This wasn't really what I expected most of the material on the exams come from the powerpoints and lectures. I did the reviews but felt like I would have been fine without it. You will have study though to get a good grade and make sure to go to class you get an easy grade boost!
If you're easily offended, he's not a good choice, but he's still a pretty nice guy. The tests are fair but you really do need to do the reading (or at least read the summaries at the back). Clicker questions are done every day and are a pretty big chuck of the grade so attendance is a must if you want to pass.
Dr Alvard is very passionate about his work. He also likes to bring up controversial subjects and is not afraid to make you think and question things. His tests are straight from his lecture slides, but you will definitely need to study hard for tests, He does clickers, so attendance is mandatory. Not a horrible class, but also not an easy A
I studied for obscene amounts of time for each exam. I barely squeezed by with an A. 12 out of the 120 in our class made A's. Attend every lecture to get the clicker points. On every test there would be a number of questions he would just flip through the book and find the most minute detail. Interesting lectures though.
Easy A. His lectures are amazing and one of the best profs I've had. Textbook is needed but you don't really need it because he posts his lectures. Test questions are straight forward. Attendance is mandatory with clickers, show up early because he does it at the beginning of class CLICKER POINTS WILL SAVE YOUR GRADE'S LIFE
He's a fantastic professor: he is passionate about his work and makes it interesting. However, it is all memorization, and the tests are somewhat hard.
This prof was one of my favorites to have ever taken. His lectures are clear and very detailed. You can tell he loves his work and his job. He never hesitates to answer questions and make things clearer if you are confused. His TAs are also a God-send. If you read and complete the study guides given for each exam, you should pass with flying colors
So basically he's nice and all but will 100% go off on tangents and never get through his slides. He'll upload the slides but they're more to help him remember what to say so they don't make sense without the lecture. Only grades are 4 tests and clicker quizzes so you really can't mess up. He gives test review and those are helpful
He cares a lot about his field, but isn't the best teacher. He's pretty controversial and enjoys being that way. You'll also be graded on just three exams and then attendance, which is 20% of your grade. His exams are pretty tough, and he can be hard to get in contact with, but if you try hard and stay super focused, you'll be okay.
I say skip class you won't pass only because he does clicker points that WILL save your grade. Other than that, the course is based on 3 exams (the final is a non-cumulative exam 3). Dr. Alvard was an interesting professor maybe not the best because he would go off on tangents and not finish the slides but there was never a boring lecture.
Alvard's class was awful. He is passionate about anthropology, but his lectures are all over the place and difficult to follow. His tests are incredibly specific, you must be familiar with absolutely EVERYTHING to get decent grades. He will not cover everything in the lectures and expects you to know specific examples form the book. DO NOT TAKE.
I had Prof Alvard fall 2018, and I'm planning to take him again in fall 2019. His lectures are hilarious and extremely informative. He goes on some tangents, but they're honestly fascinating. Take THOROUGH notes, though! Write down most everything he says, and make sure to go to the review sessions! Just pay attention and you should be fine.
Attendance is Mandatory and probably the only reason I got a B in the class, Tests are extremely specific and poorly made while referencing the lectures quite a bit with some questions being unanswerable if you dont attend lecture. Doesnt curve tests if the average is passing. There is a syllabus quiz second class thats worth 5% of your grade.
Eh lecture heavy but get the clicker, not my favorite because dont feel like Im learning much besides his tangents that arent always on the tests
This was supposed to be an in person class, but covid. His lectures were so engaging and interesting. This was the only class I actually enjoyed this semester and it reminded me that I like learning. would highly recommend and he is also lgbtq friendly which is nice.
Took this class online this semester and it was really enjoyable. His lectures are interesting and you can really tell he has a passion for what he teaches. Take detailed notes, on almost every single thing he has to say, some test questions reference his own words. Complete all the quests, pass all the exams and you should get an A.
Great proffessor! loved this class and you can tell he really cares about the material. Lectures are interesting but tests are super detailed and are lecture heavy/textbook heavy and are still a bit hard despite being open note tests. Great class, would take again, just get ready to take detailed notes for tests.
Taking ANTH205 was the worst decision I have made so far at A&M. This class is supposed to be an "easier" elective to take along core classes. The TA treated the class like you are an anthropology major. Expected to watch 4+ hours of lectures each week. Tests are open note, but unnecessarily VERY specific and difficult. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Alvard was chill and he's a great prof! The class was pretty interesting, there are quests after ever lecture but they take like 10 mins. 3 exams, open note open everything, pretty tough though. U have to go to class because although lecture slides r on canvas they are not easy to follow without him talking it through. go to class and youll be fine
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. Every test day I had about 130 pages of notes to use for the open-note test, and yet I would still get a C or D on each test. Unnecessarily hard. Avoid at all costs. Hours of lectures each week. Quests were easy but only 20% of your grade. Take any other class/prof. I'm warning you.
SO many lecture videos and material. His exams are unrealistically hard and specific, so take really good notes. We got a 1 point curve :/ Every week you have 2 Quests on google map that take some time but definitely doable to get full credit. Just don't slack, it is easy to get behind on lecture material really fast. Exams are worth 74% of grade.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ANTH 205 CLASS. His tests are so specific. I created a google doc to take word-for-word notes with 20 other students in the class and only 2 people got an A last semester out of the 100 person class. The tests are open notes but again unless you're good at guessing good luck. Take something else. This professor is the worst ever.
I have never gotten a "C" in a class until ANTH 205 with Alvard. Every single day I watched the lectures, did the activities, and took SO many notes, yet my highest grade on a test was a 74. This guy is the worst and even if you try to get help or ask a question, he will refer you to the syllabus. He is the worst prof i've had
I'll be completely honest, I didn't find the class very hard. Yes it is very lecture heavy and if you want to get an A you will have to pay attention to his lectures, but if you like learning about different cultures, the lectures are actually pretty interesting.
I like this class a lot, but the exams are very hard. Theyre open note, but its hard to find anything in your notes that relate to the exam. You have to be specific when taking notes. He is a great professor, but the exams are very hard.
Do not take this prof! I did everything I possibly could to get at least a B in this class and still only got a C which I have never gotten in college. His tests are so specific and un-passable. I asked him multiple times for help and he just told me to "read the syllabus". And let me tell you his syllabus is very unclear and all over the place.
There are daily clicker questions that make up a major portion of your grade, so attendance is basically mandatory if you want to even think about passing the class. Exams make up most of your final grade, but although they are open note, the class average is always horrendous. Don't take this class, especially if it's in the morning!
Dr. Alvard's class was difficult. He had VERY long lectures and impossible tests. Even with open note, the class average was usually near fail, with only 2 pt. curves. The questions he asks in exams are from nit-picky points in lecture that he says for 1 second out of a 2 hour recording. Quests are easy, but worth nearly nothing towards final grade
Attendance is a must. Very specific tests, but content is very interesting. Watch videos and read the book.
He was a very tough and unfair grader. The tests are hard, timed, and very particular. would NOT recommend this professor!!!!!
I'm a bad student and got a 94 on his closed book final exam. The only reason I got a B and not an A in the class is because I didn't study for the first two tests. I got an A by making a study guide with all the definitions of the topics he discussed in class and WENT TO THE TA REVIEW. The review was SO helpful and is why I did well on the final.
Anyone saying Alvard is a bad professor doesnt do their work. That simple. His class is easy, as long as you watch the lectures (actually paying attention) and read the content, there's no way you could fail. There is a lottt of content. Lots of reading, and lots of lecture. BUT its so interesting. He makes it fun. One of the best teachers Ive had.
Tests for my section were online, open book, and open note. But don't be fooled! He will put questions on the exam that are only referenced once for five seconds in one of the 15 different hour and a half long lectures that are included in that exam. Do not underestimate the first exam, I think the average was a 62 with an 8-point curve.
Alvard portrayed indifference to students, posting an Announcement that gloated at students' performance saying, "Mean score is 67%... This is a typical outcome for the first exam." Being an online-only professor, Alvard seems to have a very loose grasp of technology and course content is opinion-based (his opinion is the correct answer).
Not recommended for first time online class! Difficulty test with not a lot of explaining.
Great class, easy to get an A in, but VERY time consuming (6+ hours weekly). Tests are open note, but super specific to details in lecture/other class material. Be prepared to take note of quite literally everything he says, and then be tested on 10% of the super specifics. The material is interesting, though, and all pretty easy to understand.
Professor Alvard is very opinionated and it shows in his video lectures. There are hours of videos you are expected to watch every week (way more than what should be required for a 3 credit class), and his exams although open note are very hard and heavily weighted. I would not recommend this prof.
terrible professor. Spent hours on every quest searching and presenting it just how he said to just to get 30s and zeros on them. He doesn't even show you what you're looking for so it's just a shot in the dark. Tests are impossible too.
Do not take this class. I took it as an easier core class to meet credit requirements and it was one of my harder classes. His lectures are extremely long with multiple a week as well as required reading and documentaries to watch. I am a 4.0 student and this was almost my only B.
Be ready to take DETAILED notes on the lectures. His questions are often very detailed, so try to take notes on as much as you can throughout lectures. I will say the class is pretty time consuming for a three hour credit. If you find this stuff interesting, you'll enjoy the class, but if you're looking for something easy, I'd steer clear.
Horrible. Lectures are extremely long and there are up to 7 a week. FAR more than should be required for any 3 hour class. Tests are absurdly specific, and you have to watch hours of lectures just to be asked about something he talked about for 10 seconds. He is also extremely opinionated and offensive towards people who are religious in any way.
Do not take this! 8 hours of lecture videos each week plus outside reading, podcasts, homework. Content based on his opinion and research he had done. Tests are on Canvas not proctored. If you have to take this class just cram the videos right before each test and you should be fine. Good homework grades help but tests are majority of grade.
Made learning interesting and memorable
Do not take this class! It's not an easy grade as you might see on reddit. This was my lowest grade ever because there were multiple 3+ hour lecture youtube videos every week and his exams had the weirdest, most detailed questions that can be seen as his own opinion.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!This course has long lectures and the tests are very specific in details. He has assignments called quests which have no relation to course content and are time consuming and are confusing. with his vague instructions it's hard to even know if you are doing it correctly. Just take another class for a credit it's not worth.
Huge fan of Dr. Alvard. This class is absolutely not a cakewalk, so I don't recommend it to anyone looking for a quick and east A; however, the lectures are insanely rich in content and provide students with a deeper understanding of life outside of their borders. It was a treat to be able to take in so much information. Be prepared for a challenge
Avoid this teacher. I did not have to take this course,I took it as a general elective thinking it would be enjoyable since I found my intro to anthropology course interesting, IT WAS NOT Each week he uploads videos that are long and full of his own opinions, later tests you over his opinions. Tests were very specific. He is not supportive at all.
Do not take! This class consists of way too many hours of lecture every week with assignments that have almost no relation to the lecture material. His lectures are also incredibly opinionated and he's not afraid to insult people who have different beliefs than him. His tests are also heavily based on his opinions with a strict no-late-work policy!
He is very bias and has been arrested before... look into him before you take his class.
Do a deep dive on him and you will see why you should not take him. Google his name. He has been arrested and has complaints on him
He claims- prayer is a form of magic. He has been to jail
DO NOT take this professor. His video lectures were sometimes 2-3 hr long videos with so many details and he didn't even teach just gave his very biased opinions and read word for word. All his exams and assignments pertained very little to the material in lecture, were heavily biased to his beliefs, and extremely difficult and he is rude.
He was an alright professor but very opinionated and conceded. His lecture videos were longg. Exam questions are specific, you have to basically write down every word he says in lectures and the documentaries he assigns (also long). I would not recommend this course unless you want to put in around 5 hours+ a week on this class alone.
If there's anything you do during your time at Texas A&M University, NEVER take this class with Michael Alvard. His lectures are very long and time consuming and don't match the exams very well.If you need help just guess, reaching out is useless. He's not nice and a weird guy. So please save yourself the time and stress and don't take this class!
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. This class had more work than any 300 level class I had this semester. Multiple hour long videos that need word by word notes to be successful on test. Interesting content if it was not laid out in such boring lecture plans. Do not take this class, best of luck if you do!
This class was much harder than it needed to be. Hours and hours of lecture videos each week along with movies and textbook readings. Exams are very specific, and I mean specific. He is very opinionated and will go on and on on. If you could find an easier class to take, I would.
Class and tests weren't hard but man his grading sure is annoying sometimes, take something else if it fits in your schedule.
Honestly its an easy class. All exams and quizes are open 24hrs, and doesnt require lockdown browser etc.. I went all semester not using any of the required books and I barley watched the lectures. The only thing I didnt like was the Quets. Some were easy but some were really hard and the TA was very picky all the the time.
He is ok. he makes this class harder than what it needs to be, he offers extra credit, and he teaches very well, but if u are just taking this class for credit, don't take him, if u are taking it cus u want to learn, take him.all exams are online but u have to watch 50 min films to have a good grade on the exams. if u want an easy A don't take him
VERY lecture heavy so I would suggest staying on track. Questions on exams can be very specific to the lectures, as well as other content like required films/readings. Extra credit is given so take advantage of that, lectures are interesting if you like anthropology but they are very long. I would suggest taking notes of everything and his research
the lectures were long and i thought they were boring, sometimes they were okay but mostly boring. i got an 80% on my attendance so that literally is the only reason i got a b. he has an attendance book so if you wanna get an a, go to class. attendance is worth 16% of the grade🫣🫣
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. I am a senior finance receiving an A in all of my other classes this semester besides this one. I assumed this class would be reasonably easy considering it was an elective for me and online however I was very wrong. The teacher also not clear on his grading at all. Terrible professor.
Not good at all, doesn't help out or make accommodations, by far the worst teacher I've had yet.
This Professor is not as bad as people made him seem. He's a little weird tho, and the content is interesting but can get weird/gross at times. Do not expect this class to be an easy grade, you will have to work for it. The quests are annoying but not impossible to do. His exams are open book but super opinionated. Do not take this class for easy A
Dr. Alvard gets a lot of flack, but honestly he is my favorite professor this semester. His classes are not easy, he does not give good grades just for showing up— you HAVE to make an effort. He has a very wry sense of humor, and he gives amazing lectures. If you want an easy A, don't take his class. If you actually want to LEARN? You'll love him.
Professor Alvard is definitely a different kind of guy but he was very nice. I liked his class a lot. I don't know why people are saying his classes have a high work load, besides exams we didn't have many assignments just readings to do and a group presentation.
ANTH205 Online 75% of the course grade was determined by 3 exams, which were somewhat challenging and required thorough understanding and note-taking over small details. However, the open-note format of the exams made double checking questions very easy. The 15 weekly assignments (Quests, 25% of grade) involved finding areas on google earth.
This just in, college students discover that they have to do work in a class they took. Shocking. No seriously, if you watch the lecture videos, do your quests and take notes you will pass the exam. He is very bright and very opinionated and if you engage with the material, you will gain a new nuanced perspective on other cultures as well as ours
As long as you keep up with the lecture videos, take super detailed notes, and keep up with quests the class is not difficult. He is easy to contact with any questions, has responded quickly to email in my experience. Some weeks have a ton of lecture content, makes it difficult to catch up if you get behind on lectures. Do everything early!
I took this class for credit and expected an easy A. The exams are multiple-choice questions, and you would expect them to be easy. However, he provides so many options in the questions; one of the questions on the last exam had probably around 15 choices. I truly do not understand why this professor has to make the exams so difficult.
I'm going to be honest, the subject material in this class was (at times) very dry and uninteresting. However, Dr. Alvard's lectures and accessibility made all the difference. He is a gifted lecturer, and is more than willing to offer extra help if you are struggling with the course material. He was my favorite professor this year.
The professor is obviously very enthusiastic about the class and even includes his own studies from when he did field work. Lectures are very lengthy but were most of the time fairly entertaining.
