The information learned in class was interesting, but I really disliked how he ran the class. He simply talked with no direction and was REALLY boring. The tests, though, are only essays, so the class overall isn't all that hard, just boring.
Unclear and horrible teaching methods. Although all tests are essay he is extreemly difficult in his grading. He grades on a 5 point scale- 5 is for God & the teacher, 4 is for the one student every 5 years that is amazing, 3 is exceptional, 2 is average, 1 is below average. 95% and above is an A
He just lectures then expect you to know everything. I wouldn't recommend him. Thinks he knows everything, self-righteous.
He's probably not the worst professor ever, but I've really come to expect so much more out of BYU. Boring is an understatement! Sure he had his moments, but those were few. Take great notes, proofread carefully, but if you still get a bad grade don't bother talking to him, your grade won't change.
Professor Arts is the first philosopher that I have ever met. Yes, there are a lot of people that teach philosophy, but he is true philosopher. Every word he uses has meaning behind it. His clarity in his teaching is par excellence. In philosophy, clarity is everything. By far, he is the best philosophy teacher I have had.
This teacher can be very dry as some have said, but that is because he is very systematic. If you listen closely and take notes you will benefit greatly from his knowledge. He is very clear, you just have to pay attention because he covers a lot of material in a class period.
He's intelligent and unfortunately knows it. He gives great explanations and his class is actually quite interesting, however, he does not grade on a curve and does not give any feedback on grades (e.g. why you received the grade he gave you and what you could do to improve). His grading procedures are horrible.
Very unclear about what he wants out of his students. Tells you what he wants but if you only write what he wants you will get a D to a C. To get an A you have to go WAY above and beyond. He expects a graduate level effort from undergraduates. Don't take the course. I found him extreemly boring. WORST PROFESSOR OF MY COLLEGE CAREER.
I learned a great deal about philosophy from his class and really enjoyed his method of teaching. It's hard to get a good grade though. If you want an A without excessive effort, take someone else.
I learned a great deal in this course. He really knows his subject. He's not afraid to go on tangents (once spending an entire hour on his life) but these add flavor to the class. As noted by others, the tests are challenging, but they're also take-home and you can use whatever sources you want - that's why he expects a lot. It's worth the effort.
Other comments have been correct. Brother Arts is extremely dry and boring. He keeps his office hours a secret so that you can't ever ask him for help. He grades really hard and his lectures are awful. Don't take class with him. Pick a different professor.
The course material was pretty difficult, but then this was a 400 level class. Professor Arts definitely knew what he was talking about, though he does go off on tangents occasionally.
He gives no clear explanation of his expectations for various assignments. Students are then shocked to get their papers back (which they thought they did correctly) with a C or D on it, but no other teacher-made markings to explain what they did wrong. Arts is very well-read and knows his stuff. lectures are informative if u can stay awake.
Professor Arts is passionate about the subject matter ... my class with him had only six students, and I really looked forward to our class discussions. His accent can be a bit of a challenge.
Our class only had 12 students in it. Arts drilled us with Phil. and made us write and re-write until we knew what we were doing at the end of the semester. He made us think HARD. He is really smart and always has an answer (or question) for every philosophy. An AWESOME teacher that requires students to be somewhat dedicated.
Very measured in his words. His lectures are almost always engaging which reflects his familiarity with a broad range of subjects within philosophy and without. Not the easiest class, he demands a lot from his students but you gain confidence and learn a whole lot.
Prof Arts is an excellent teacher. His teaching style is not flashy, but it's very logical & clear. He is the best-read Philosophy professor I've had and understands what he is talking about. He says some pretty funny things, but most of the class will not get his jokes. People that don't like him don't have a logical mind for philosophy. Take home tests.
I loved this class! Really, Arts is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. He does a great job explaining abstract principles. He expects A LOT from students! Expect to work HARD for your not-quite-an-A. Arts' lectures aren't the most engaging unless you put effort into learning. The class content is facinating! I recommend it!
Dr. Arts' greatest strength is his ability to give extremely precise and clear explanations of difficult philosophical concepts. Some have complained that he doesn't give feedback, and I thought so too when I got a B on my first essay. However, during class he explained the errors that lost points and sure enough I had them. Great teacher.
I'm suprised to see that Dr. Arts doesn't have better ratings. You only have about four or five assignments for the class and they are all take home. Dr. Arts explains everything really well and clearly. I recommend taking careful notes and then preparing for assignments by going over questions with a group. Great class, not too difficult A
Arts teaching style is random and has no meaning. he never lectures on the same thing in two lectures and never repeats himself. if you missed the info, then too bad, you're in trouble. He doesn't explain his grading methods. i would not recommend taking this teacher unless you are looking for someone to kill all interest in philosophy.
I hated professor Arts. This was a freshman English course which you wouldn't have been able to tell if it weren't the title of the class. Professor Arts lectured everyday about reading that maybe 20 percent of the class actually read. Our entire grade was based on the final paper. I felt that going into the class I could expect a professor that wo
Heck of a philosopher. Not so good at teaching. His syllabus had nothing to do with the class. Class attendance was nearly pointless but his lectures were somewhat interesting. Only and final grade was an eight page paper. Didn't learn much about writing though. Take him if you want an easy semester and interesting conversation.
I loved Dr. Arts. I reccommend taking him later on in your college career, when you're confident in your writing and discussion skills. He is very interesting and encourages the students to really think, rather than just parroting information. He usually grades only on a few essays, so you should be comfortable with writing.
I have never felt more frustrated with a class at BYU. The lectures were fun but completely irrelevant to the class. His was never clear about his expectations for assignments, and the syllabus might as well have been tissue paper.
The final paper is all that the grade is. He will tell you what he wants your arguments to be, and if that's not what he thinks than your job is a lot harder. The smaller papers before the final are to help you with the final, but receive no score. Class Lectures are confusing, so dont worry about taking notes, no test. Just final paper!
Classtime is spent on philosophy topics on not on how to better the paper, which is the majority of the grade. He is hard to understand and always gives negative feedback. He also posts grades publicly for all to see.
I don't know why people complain so much about Arts. If you know how to logically organize your ideas on paper and be somewhat creative, you should be able to get an A without too much sweat. Just 6 assignments in the semester. It also can go a long way in giving you some perspective in life.Arts does a great job of applying philosphy to the gospel
Experienced and intelligent. Not an easy A, but knows what he's talking about. You have to pay attention in class, and when you do, you will be amazed how much you can take in. Keep up with the textbook reading, it will help clarify dense material. One of the best and smartest professors I've ever had.
I got a 4.6 GPA in high school & I consider myself one of the best writers on campus but this guy is so tough on his grading standards. the textbook (Great Conversation)wasnt very clear or useful. the important stuff comes off blackboard. start the assignments early for a better chance. six writing assignments. good luck! will have as teacher again
If you're familiar with basic phil history and can write well, you'll be fine in the class. I was going through some issues and went to class left than half the time, but still managed to get an A because I scored well on the test papers. Don't take any of the writing assignments for granted though; you have to have to say something worth reading.
I absolutely loved him! He knows everything about everything! The class was interesting, but really I could have not even gone and still gotten an A.
I know students are signing up for classes now, so I wanted them to know that he is great! He knows philosophy inside and out, he has a testimony (which can be hard within philosophy), is a fair grader on papers. The class is nice because it is only papers, lecture is normally funny, but can be long. I tell everyone to take his course!
This is honestly the easiest civ general. All you have to do is write short summaries, critical analysis, and your written midterm and final. I'm not much of a writter and I will either be getting a A or A- in this class. You do have to read A LOT but you are going to have to for any civ class you take. Seriously, take this class!
Brilliant guy but a stupid course. Class is pointless and he is very unclear about what he wants. Your grade is a paper. If you want to learn to write a good philosophical paper though he is perfect for the job.
Brilliant guy but not a good class. Your final grade is a paper. Class is worthless and he is unclear on what he wants. Great if you want to learn how to write a good philosophical paper.
Arts is brilliant! Anyone will learn a great deal from taking a class from him!
Great professor! He focused on a few key ideas and explained them in depth until anybody could understand. Interesting lectures. All the assignments (including midterm and final) are papers. You're in luck if you're a good writer. Not my strength, but I did well anyway because he was happy to give me specific feedback on the papers when I asked.
This professor is genuinely smart, and if you try to take advantage of that fact you can learn a lot from him. The hardest part is that you feel challenged in your thinking in this class, but listen to him, trust him and he won't lead you somewhere you shouldn't be. Overall one of the best classes I have ever taken.
Professor Arts is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. Genuinely cares about his students, and is very friendly. The entire grade for the class is based off of papers summarizing philosophical texts, these papers have nothing to do with what is lectured in class. I didn't attend class for the last 2 months and walked out with an A.
Lectures are not necessary for completion of assignments. Did not provide feedback on papers for which he docked points, making it impossible to write to his liking on subsequent assignments. Dull and arduous class.
He's got a great sense of humor and he's a fantastically clear, logical lecturer. I find myself enjoying his lectures even though I hate the topic. He's got a cool accent, too. He's not too hard of a grader. Class attendance not mandatory for success.
Arts is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is more of a philosopher than a professor. Lectures are kind of dull towards the middle and end of the semester, but are not necessary since the class has only six take-home assignments. Highly recommend.
Hate this class because he is completely unclear on the writing assignments. He never updates canvas to show what he expects on the writing assignments, and if he does it isn't until hours before the assignment is due. What good does that do? To know what is due you have to go to class. Would not suggest this class!
I don't think he ever gives full points on papers. And he said he isn't "paid" to give feedback on what you did wrong on papers. On 20 point assignments he gives you 15-16 if he doesn't think you did the assignment right. 17-18 if you did what you were told. 19-20 if you went above and beyond what you are told. Wouldn't suggest this class.
He doesn't care about you or your education. He is simply there to get paid and he doesn't "give A's because not everyone can get A's or there would be no point in grades." So instead he gave half the class C's. I will NEVER recommend this professor for any course. Extremely disappointed in BYU for hiring him since he doesn't promote BYU's aim.
The grade is based on 4 papers, the midterm, and the final. Its an easy class to pass, but with a few catches. The four papers are never explained and the topic is generally given in one sentence. You should not hope to understand what you need to write for them. Further, lectures are dry beyond belief. Take literally any other class over this.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!! Worst class I have taken at BYU. Lectures are boring, course is very disorganized, the final was ridiculous. I got an A on all the papers but an F in the final. The study guide for the final was a joke. It helped out with 3/40 questions. Class average for the final was a 56. He doesn't grade on a curve either
I got a 100 on the final and only briefly looked at the study guide. He grades easy on the papers. The lectures can be dull because he doesn't involve the class, but he is EXTREMELY good at explaining difficult philosophical concepts in an understandable way. Take his 202 if you're a phil major that needs a good basis for future classes
I took his class at UVU (he teaches here in the evenings). Yes he doesn't involve the class in his lectures, but if you actually listen to what he's saying, it's brilliant. Most people just don't have the attention spans requisite. The guy is a great teacher, but you have to be willing to actually pay attention to what he's saying and not zone off.
Michael Arts class on Wittgenstein changed my life. Literally the most important class I took as an undergrad.
Michael Arts is quiet and subdued but super chill and very reasonable. The class is entirely lecture-based, but with an involved group it can be an interactive discussion at times. Your only grades are the occasional critical papers or summaries of historical texts-- no homework. The material is interesting and Arts is just a really great guy!
I love Dr. Arts as a person, but I would never recommend this class to anyone! He doesn't really teach you anything, you must teach yourself all of the material. His grading criteria is incredibly confusing. He tests you on material that hasn't been covered yet. His lectures are really dry and full of tangents. Easy enough class but you won't learn
Professor Arts explains philosophical concepts in a way that helps you understand and makes you think. Although the grading criteria could be more specific, his class is fairy easy.
each week you will have either a quiz, short paper, or 4-5 page paper due. I took his class once a week on Tuesdays so every Tuesday something was due. He lectures the entire class period and tries to get you to think really deep. You will read at least 10 pages of a story or book each week.
PHIL202 was one of my less stressful classes. It still required some effort for papers and studying, but was very do-able. There were about 6 papers (variable length) but no tests (besides the final). Arts is a bit dry, but he is a fair grader and knowledgeable in many subjects. Go to class, take notes, ask questions, and enjoy the class.
He is a great person but some great people should not be professors. He requires you to know things that he has not gone over in class for the tests. There is a TA lab for this class which all other 205 classes had access to which we did not because he never told us about it. I'm not sure he understands how to help his students learn effectively.
The book was way more helpful than the professor. He even told us the day the test opened that there would be a whole extra unit and a half we hadn't even covered in class that we would be tested on that. Completely unclear expectations and difficult to get any help from him. He wouldn't even tell us where the logic lab was. DO NOT TAKE FROM HIM!
Philosophy is interesting stuff, but his lectures are extremely dry with little to no class involvement. The criteria by which he grades papers is very unclear, so if you don't write what he's looking for you will get a low score, and since there are so few assignments this can really mess up your grade. I would recommend taking from someone else.
Worst class structure I have ever seen. The textbook was never mentioned and the paper grading criteria was non-existent. The worst thing was the comprehensive final, (We had no idea on what though) and worth 25% of the grade. No real study help and despite the average grade being an F he didn't curve the test. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very dry lectures. Overall grade is based on a few papers (no grading criteria is given so you just have to wing it), a midterm essay, and a multiple choice final. He doesnt grade too hard on the papers, but it is difficult to know what he is looking for. Only take this class if you are interested in REALLY understanding the views of philosophers.
Even the other professors in the department will tell you not to take this or any other class from him. Often made mistakes in correcting homework that took the entire class to resolve. Forgot to teach an entire half-unit before a test. Not sure why he still works at BYU, avoid Prof. Arts at all costs. The only way to get an A is the textbook.
I personally loved Arts. We had a great class and we all participated regularly. He's honestly a goofball so don't be surprised when he messes up. His classes aren't structured so just watch him do the proofs. He eventually was teaching slower than what our homework covered so thats annoying but its a very interesting topic.
Really hard grading, oddly specific quizzes. Although I got full marks or A+'s on every essay, despite how hard the midterm essays were graded (19/20 for me), I got 2/5 for most of the quizzes because they're written to confuse you. I would have an A in the class if not for these quizzes; instead, I have a C. He doesn't respect your time in class.
YOU GUYS! I got all As and high Bs through the semester and got a hard earned C- in this class. Professor Arts is hard to contact and his quizzes do not reflect anything learned from in class. Everyone I spoke with from my class had low grades! Save your gpa, take it from another professor. I promise youll thank me later!
Professor Arts is a great professor. He has a slight accent since English is his second language but he's understandable. Best compliment(s): easy grader . He also cares about students. Totally willing to work with you if you're late for an assignment. Best criticism(s): he's REALLY lecture heavy and can be boring if that's not your learning style.
The top score in my class is a 92%, and only one student got above 90%. He only has a few papers and quizzes, so the class isn't too work heavy, but it is very difficult to understand. He is vague and does not always cover what is on the tests. The class is a pretty easy C but nearly impossible A. Do NOT take this is you want a high college GPA.
This class was ridiculous. He has very specific and strangely worded quizzes that are worth most of your grade and does not cover the material on them fully in class! He is also very vague about other places to find the information. You will not do well even if you feel you have learned the material well.
There are not many assignments in class. Quizzes, papers, (8 pg paper) midterm, and extra credit final. He is very wordy in class and hard to understand, but you need to pay attention because the answers he is looking for are often not in the reading. He grades hard on the papers, and the instructions are not clear. ASK HIM QUESTIONS-It will help!
There are not many assignments in class. He is very wordy and hard to understand, but pay attention because the answers he is looking for are often not in the reading. He grades hard on the papers, and the instructions are not clear. ASK HIM QUESTIONS-It will help! He expects a lot, but put in the work and reach out with concerns, you will be fine.
Logic is already a hard course, Professor Arts makes it a little harder. If you are comfortable teaching yourself from the textbook, you will be fine. If you need homework help or get easily confused- DO NOT take from him. Great guy, but his teaching methods were unhelpful and circuitous at best.
The best thing going for Brother Arts is that he is very kind and genuine. He gets to know his students and wants you to succeed. The course itself is tough, though. Each assignment is worth 5-10% of your grade, and so there's only about 10 assignments for the semester and the questions are tricky. Final is extra credit. Nice guy, tough class.
Professor Arts is a really nice guy, but this class was ridiculous. There were five homework assignments and four tests and they made up your entire grade. I didn't find the lectures hopeful and relied on the textbook, mostly. It's a great book, but I spent most of my time stressing about my grade. Not recommended if you're a lecture-learner.
I love Professor Art's class so much. His lectures are extremely insightful and the way he discusses philosophy makes it easy to look back on and analyze on your own. He is super understanding about late work and offers the final as extra credit. I found the homework load completely reasonable and came to look forward to his lectures.
Prof Arts is passionate about philosophy & very educated. Took this class just for a GE credit but it wasn't bad. Kinda paper heavy but I never read the textbook and only skimmed the readings needed to write papers. Final is 10% EC and just repeated quiz questions, which is why I got an A. Boring class but easy to be successful!! Take it from him!
Professor Arts made philosophy fun and interesting. He knew his stuff, yet welcomed discussion and never made me feel dumb for not understanding concepts. He's kind and made an effort to get to know the students. I wish I had more opportunities to take his classes. I looked forward to coming to class!
Professor Arts is hilarious and is very passionate about what he's teaching. There was some ambiguity as to what was expected of the students on a week-to-week basis, but overall, a good professor.
I love professor Arts teaching style. His lectures are so interesting and clear. Homework is straightforward. Great GE class. Never thought I would like a philosophy class.
Professor Arts was nice and I enjoyed his lecturing...but the course itself is awful. No information, no syllabus, no grading rubric, and in order to get an A you had to write far more than the requirements for the papers. The class quizzes were composed of confusing questions and the overall quality was extremely poor.
Y'all are gonna laugh - I literally took 2 voice recordings to show my friends how boring this class and professor were. (if you've taken this class, you get it) SO awful.
Dr Arts is a sweet guy, he was always willing to extend deadlines for me. Most of lecture goes right over my head, but if you do the assignments (like one a week, super light) and go to lecture you'll be okay. he ended up giving me 10% extra credit, tho idk if that was because I told him I was trying really hard and still doing bad or just cuz.
Very lecture-heavy, then a quiz about every other week about what we learned. The papers had no rubric so it was hard to know what to do because there were very few descriptions. There are 100 points in the class so one point is 1% of your grade. The test was extra credit, and the professor did open a quiz for me after it closed, he was very kind.
One thing to note from all these reviews: If you don't like philosophy you probably won't like professor Arts. Not because he is the problem, but because you just don't like the subject he teaches. If you do like philosophy then professor Arts is awesome and I would highly recommend him! Prof. Arts has been my favorite professor so far in college.
Arts is not going to make you like Logic if it isn't something you're already interested in. If you do like it however, he does a superb job at explaining logical concepts. If you consistently attend lectures and do the readings then you should get an A in his class. He usually provides multiple examples, so you get many opportunities to understand
Lots of lecturing, and lots of bizarre pieces of information. It was incredibly difficult to know where to focus my learning. He did try to be personable at times, but he mostly just lectured, often with a PowerPoint, and used a lot of vocab I wasn't familiar with.
Professor Arts is very intelligent and insightful during his lectures, they made me think but were hard to follow and got boring. He doesn't really use a lot of slides and the quizzes he gave were really difficult. Lots of essays but they were not super difficult as long as you went to class. Easy class to pass but difficult to get an A in.
This class is fairly easy to do well in if you attend class. You get two chances for every quiz and the final is literally just a repeat of all of the quiz questions throughout the year (which you have access to). He can be a little hard to follow at times, but does a pretty good job of explaining difficult concepts.
Dr. Arts is very interesting and knowledgable professor. His grading is a bit unclear sometimes but due to the in-frequentness of them it makes it really easy, final was easy but make sure you study
