This teacher is too fast paced for me. He always seems like he is rushed and it makes it hard for me to learn that way. Also, it usually takes him 2 weeks to grade exams. Homework is all online, and the exams are easy except for the multiple choice section which accounts for half of the test score. He is a nice guy and will help you if you need it.

Has lots of accounting experience, but not much teaching ability. Teaches off of powerpoint, but goes really fast with only a fair amount of clarity. Rely on text for understanding more difficult concepts.
The class I took was a hybrid online class. Only was in class once a week. This made things very difficult if you did not understand things. He does have a ton of real world accounting experience and I would recommend to anyone who wants to be an account. Read the previous ratings because I agree with what has already been said.
Mike is very educated in the field of accounting. His class is very straightforward. His lectures are not boring and he brings a lot of outside work related knowledge into the classroom. The tests are hard and the homework is a must but he has office hours and offers a lot of help if needed. He is a great teacher!
He is a wonderful teacher. direct and helpful
This is a hard class, however Mr. Barendse is really nice, and he is always willing to help you understand, during his office hours. He is a good teacher, who wants his students to succeed.
accounting, as we all know, is tough. but mike is a really nice genuine guy who takes his time making sure you get the subject. mike is very passionate about the subject and had lots of experince in the business prior teaching. make sure you do all the homeworks and quizes because they will sure help you in the long run.
Accounting is a tough subject and this class requires commitment. Make sure you go to class, take good notes and dedicate a good amount of time to studying and you CAN get an A.
I think he's the wost teacher I've had in 3 years, I would say you are better off teaching it to yourself online than wasting 4 hrs of your time every week.
Great techer! Weird sense of humor and an annoying laugh but good teaching skills. Teaches from powerpoint and stays on track. Tests are tough but lots of studying will get you an A. Online hw and quizes aren't too bad.
Really good accounting teacher. Explains his material in a way the students can relate to. I would take his class, homeworks not that bad and he's a cool guy.
Taking an accounting class is tough no matter who is the teacher. Mike is probably one of the smartest guys when it comes to anything dealing with money in any way! All homework quizzes, and tests are online. Study and get to know the text book well you should do ok.
I took 120 and 121 with Mike. He knows his stuff for sure. Both classes are difficult, however, from what i have heard you will not find an easier accounting teacher at Grossmont. I would recommend.
Michael is never prepared for the class discussion. What he reviews in class is not helpful on the quizzes or tests. If you ask him a question that he does not want to review he will tell you that there is not enough time for that question. I think that he is the worst professor that I have ever had. I will never take a class that he teaches again
I found him funny and entertaining, lectures are all on powerpoint so you can review at home if you need to, tests and quizzes are online too so I can do them when I have time. Great teacher, great class!
Accounting is hard and a lot of work no matter where you take it, but Mike is probably the most interesting and energetic teacher you could take it from. I hate the subject of accounting, but liked the teacher. I would recommend him and take him again.
This teacher is great! he is super helpful. I took the hybrid course which i recommend for everyone! hw and quizes due on sunday that are 10 questions each but its all online along with all the midterms. Project throughout the semester but it pretty easy. The final is not accumulative and you can use all notes and book on it! Easy good class!
So, this guys is an OK teacher overall. He doesn't do too well of a job clarifying especially if you're not a business major. He tells the worst jokes and refuses to get over the fact that he's not rich. If you can handle listening to a broken record this is for you.
This is is the best instructor in Grossmont who teachs Bus 120- 121, Just study the narrated video and you ll get A, I got A-. take him if you want the best instructor in grossmont ,,,
Itook the online course. His instructions are very clear, and he answers your questions. This course is pretty easy, much of the content I've learned the hard way over the years and I wish this course had been a requirement to graduate high school.
Mike is a great guy. Very interesting and willing to help with whatever questions you may have. Uses real world knowledge of his time with Sony Pictures and is a great teacher. Tests have some tricky multiple choice but if you do the reading and go to office hours you can usually score an 80-85. Overall great man and great teacher.
Took at SDSU. Hard class, homework, learnsmart(online, takes about 40 min), and quiz due each Monday. Tests are difficult and require a lot of time. Allows note card on tests though. Make sure you attend and participate, he pushed my grade up from a B to a B+ because of this. Definitely knows his stuff.
Changed sylabi on the last day of class saying that grades were too high! Lecture is useless, just study notes. He doesn't care at all about his students, just about himself.
Gave us teacher evaluations under the sylabus saying that the final would replace our lowest test. Then, on the last day of class he changes the sylabus saying that grades are too high so the final will not replace a test.
I took his class at USD and he seems to be a completely different guy from the other reviews. He might be helpful during office hours, but other than that I would be better off teaching it to myself. The tests were hard and tricky even though he always says he wants to help us. He expects us to memorize an entire textbook. no notecard for USD
Mr. Barendse's teaching style is lacking. I felt more as if I were in attendance at a financial meeting, rather than a student in accounting class. He moves thru material too quickly, won't answer questions if HE feels it's been sufficiently covered. Although, he's helpful w/ questions on in class assignments. The class discussions weren't helpful.
Difficult class, would be less so if lectures were adequately prepared. One lecture was completely useless for the online homework & quiz. ARP's are a large part of your grade, ask lots of questions! Common sense tells you he'd want it similar to the book/online, but not so! Psychic abilities required. Good luck on the final!
nice guy, funny. I recommend attending class. Make sure you read the chapter prior to doing the assignments. I do agree that his lectures seemed some what useless but so long as you do the work you will pass the class without a problem. I will be taking him again for financial accounting.
Not a good teacher and never prepared. He talks about different stuff in class that has nothing to do with the subject and lazy when it comes to grading your hw.
online class super easy. quiz,5 homework questions, case study, and discussion board due eac week. no tests, fianl projects really easy.Short textbook chapters. he was really organized, which is super inportant online. More of an overview of all personal finances. Replies to emails fast.
Easy class. Took it online but he does not explain anything clearly. He had three different dates for our final. I had to email him many times over the semester. I wouldn't say dont take this class because it's really easy but he can be difficult to deal with.
To be fair, Mike teaches a REALLY hard subject. He does a great job in making the class enjoyable even though it's super difficult material. He's honest and really respectful of students, which helps and he will make you laugh. Be prepared to really work for your grade and take copious notes. Also, utilize office hours, but he's super awesome. :D
Great, fun teacher who cares about the subject and his students. The class is hard but he's always willing to help. Go to class, do the homework and you will be fine!
Professor B is da best.
Very hard class. He tries his best though. Managerial is just a very tough subject. You will NEED to study and work with others in your class. Make sure you understand everything before going home. Dont worry so much about the hw. Focus on the tests! dont waste so much time on the hw if you understand the material. The tests can make or break you.
He was super nice and helpful! He actually has a personality unlike some professors and genuinely shows interest in his students. I strongly recommend him!
Accounting is a hard subject regardless of who's teaching. Barendse does a good job teaching a difficult subject. There are many resources to study with online and the book. 2 tests and 1 non-accumulative final. Would recommend him!
He's a great teacher. It's not an easy class, but he makes it manageable. Don't buy the book, the Learn Smart program comes with an ebook.
Mike is really laid-back teacher and he knows how to simplify the subject as much as he can. Ask Qs, attend class, and study the study guides prior to exams. Utilize his office hours! He will answer any and every question! He really does care.
Accounting is difficult to begin with. This class structure doesn't go well with one class lecture and the rest online esp for a core class. This class needs at least a min 2 class lectures with 3 at most. The structure is terrible and this class seemed rushed. Don't take here GO another school
Hybrid class. Class discussing a chapter once a week. You must be diligent if u want to pass. Mike wants to help you but you have to show him effort. Ask Qs before, during, and after. 2 midterms, one final, and online connect program. See a tutor each week to fully grasp the concept. Take this class at Cuyamaca if you can.
I took Mike for both financial and managerial. If you stayed on top of the work it is not a difficult course. I received an A in both courses. But then again, it was easier for me because I love accounting.
Mike was a great professor. I had him for both financial and managerial and his class is interesting. But always keep with the assignments or you will be lost.
Such a great professor so I'm coming back to him next semester to take managerial accounting (i don't even go to grossmont). You really need to take the time to learn the material. Take advantage of extra credit if he offers it and don't procrastinate. Come to him if you have questions too!
He gives you everything you need to succeed. Don't slack on the homework even though it is only worth a few points. If you do the homework and study with his study guides you can get an A. You cannot procrastinate though. Great teacher! Highly recommended!
Great teacher. Clearly explains material, tests are challenging, he gives you study guides an tells you what is going to be on the tests. Must buy the book and connect plus. I would definitely recommend this teacher. Makes you work for your grade.
the material is not that bad. The down side is that he doesn't have any extra credits, NO CURVE EITHEER. You have only 3 tests over 12 chapters, get a C on any of them, you would not have an A. Side note, to get an A in this class you need to have 93% means that out of 820 points you can lose no more than 57 points. You're welcome for the math.
Weekly quizzes, Homework, and discussion boards. Easy enough just stay on top of it. Three projects continuing cases 2 - and a final project. A lot of writing for these but easy. I did extra credit but never got a response to my emails and never got credit for it. Still got an A so im not too mad about the lack of response and credit.
He is a GREAT teacher! I NEVER had a problem with clarity. He is charming ! But I had to drop. This course is extensive! He does not allow any notes on exams an are LOTS of formulas to memorize. His tests are HUGE! The major points are in the math work and as I said they are LONG tests. An actual book is required. The ebook is not helpful enough.
Horrible Teacher! Avoid him if you can.
Don't wait until it gets hard. Ask for help as soon as you don't understand in the beginning. Good teacher but challenging course.
Best accounting teacher. I would recommend taking him because his lectures are very clear. If you don't understand something, he will explain it in a different way. He has a big history in accounting, so he rarely messes up in his lectures or examples. There is a lot of homework, but it helps to understand the subject, since it isn't the easiest.
Michael is friendly,& helpful if you have questions. The tests make up most of your grade so make sure you do well on them. Some of the stuff on the online homework wasn't covered in class which can be frustrating, but he tells you what will be on the test. There's a group project about analyzing a company's stock, which was interesting. take him
Barendse is the most amazing and inspirational teacher ever. He is #Goals. Anything he talks about is interesting and motivating. His energetic lectures prevent the lectures from getting too dry. He seems like a really cool guy to know. Way better quality of teaching than my current teachers at SDSU.
Mr Barendse is an amazing teacher, I took his class as my first business class and he makes it fun and easy to understand, he has a lot of experience and you can really trust everything he says. He jokes a lot and tries to get the class involved and brings in real life examples to make you understand ! I recommend everyone to take his class!
I took his online personal finance class this past summer and it has been the easiest class I have every taken. He sticks to a schedule so there are no surprises. We only ever had things due on Tuesday, Thursdays, and Sundays. It is very easy to get an A in this class as long as you submit discussion boards on time and do homework and quizzes too.
Professor Michael is a great teacher. He knows what he is doing. I would take his class again and again. Even though if you ask him a silly question he makes it like, it was a very good question. Unfortunately you have to do so much homework and attend his class in order to pass it. He is exteremely positive and loves teaching!
I took Business 120, 121, & Personal Finance with Professor Barendse. Honestly, I would've taken all of my business classes with him if there were spots available. Great teacher and cares about his students. If you have any questions, I recommend going to his office hours. But if you prefer email, he replies fast. Best professor hands down.
We had 3 tests (no cumulative test at the end of the semester), and a group project. The class wasn't easy or difficult. He cares about your grade. I enjoyed my time during his lectures. I would take him again.
Mike is an amazing professor, took him for Bus120 and I got my moneys worth for sure. He is funny, lectures were all amazing, and he is real with you. Mike prepares you not only to pass the class but to excel in the business world. Be prepared for ALOT of online homework, this was the hardest part of the class.
I had heard great things about Prof. Barendse so I made it a point to crash his class for BUS121. Best decision!! His lectures were funny, engaging and he used his own extensive experience to apply the material to real-life situations. There is a bit of work, but everything is clearly laid out and understandable if you put in the effort.
He clearly is passionate about accounting and makes it interesting and easy to understand. He is very approachable and really wants his students to succeed. Im definitely going to try to take another class with him.
Most qualified professor I have ever had. He is very inspirational and I will definitely take him next semester again!
tests are difficult but he prepares you for them. homework and quizzes are online. great professor!
This class only met once a week, so going in you know it's gonna be HW heavy. I enjoyed all of the lectures given by Prof. Barendse, and he held zoom meetings after we went online due to COVID - while they didn't compare to his lectures, he put in the effort to ensure our learning. Teaches the material well, and has a sense of humor. I recommend.
Does not care about students, I had a death in my family & still went to class, told him about it before class, (Didnt say sorry for my loss once) & during break I was outside crying to my mom on the phone. He interrupted me to tell me I should drop the class because I have a C & he doesnt think I can improve. Shouldve reported to the dean.
Was practically nonexistent to our class. All based on textbook and the program. I know the subject is hard, but his lack of involvement made it worse. Not accessible. Doesn't give any actual lecture for anything. The millions of homework assignments worth so little but the tests so much that if you don't do well on them you will fail easily.
This was a good class, it was all online with no zoom meetings. Professor Barendse uses the Program McGraw Hill Connect for all the tests and assignments. Do all of your assignments and study for the tests by reviewing the homework and reading the textbook and you will pass this class. There is also an annual report assignment which isn't too hard.
Great teacher, however it was a lot of information, so you will need to spend a good amount of time outside of class studying. If you struggle with something speak up and he will explain it in a way you can understand. He cares about his students and will spend extra time if you put forth effort. Will take again!
Do not take this class if you have no motivation when it comes to difficult work. You will need to teach yourself as there is no help or lectures provided. Homework is only worth between 1-2 points while tests are worth over 100 so it is difficult to keep or raise your grade. Truthfully I do not recommend this professor or his method of teaching.
This is not an easy or blow off class. There is usually 2-5 hours of homework and smart book to complete every week. You absolutely HAVE TO DO THE HOMEWORK. Professor Barendse does a good job explaining the topics and what is expected of students. Before every exam he does a review that covers exactly what you should study to do well on the exam.
This class was essentially self guided. He was kind enough to go over problems if you sought out help in your own time, but everything was done through video lectures.. Homework was worth 1.5 - 5 pts but the tests were 150 pts, and there was a test every 3 chs. I personally would not take this style of class again, but it was definitely manageable.
I had professor Barendse my first fall and spring semester, he is very organized and when you have a question he responds back quickly with a very detailed answer. I would definitely take a class with him again!
Great professor overall. Totally chill and is a fairly lenient grader. If you're having problems talk to him. I had a friend in the class that got to retake a test of she did well on the next one. The Bus-120 is a harder class but he gives great lectures and makes sure you understand. Textbook included in the McGraw Hill class code, no purchase.
The lectures are extremely long and hard to follow because he is not very good at explaining. Almost everyone dropped the class halfway through the semester. Tests are like 90% of your grade there is so so much homework and each assignment is worth 1-5 even though they take hours to do. Ive never struggled so much in a class like I did in his.
This is such a useful class, and it is only a 6-week summer class. Lots to read, but easy projects. I will use these skills like paying taxes and buying a house in real life. He's an easy grader and gives good life advice. There is a separate program he uses other than Canvas, but he can give you a discount for it or something.
There's a lot to read. There's also a separate program he uses, but he get you a discounted price, less than the bookstore offers. His lectures are good, but you need to participate. It's a hard class with hard tests, so read, practice, and use the study guide. There's a group project at the end, so make good friends. And keep up on the work.
Took Financial & Managerial accounting under Prof. Barendse. He made things easy to understand and was very approachable. We had 3-4 tests (like 90% of your grade basically), so you have to do well straightaway or it'd be harder to raise your grade. HW is long and only worth a bit, but you gotta put in the work. There's a final group project too.
All assignments were on the McGraw Hill website. I dreaded this class and his Financial Accounting class. Honestly, only choose this teacher if you have no easier teachers available. This class would take me hours upon hours to finish the overview, smartbook, homework, and the quiz, REPEAT!!!! Just so frustrating... But the teacher is cool.
He rarely replies to emails. Out of all the professors I've met, he was the most disrespectful and lazy. He probably doesn't care about students' academic goals and doesn't pay attention even if they are struggling.
This professor is awesome. Any of these reviews that you see saying he is bad at lecturing or lazy, are dead wrong; if you are lazy or a bad student, you will not succeed in this class. That being said, as a good student, his class was amazing and super easy, flowed well, and taught me so many things about accounting!
This class was self guided. He will go over problems if you ask. Homework takes so so long its horrible and it is only worth 1.5 - 5 pts but the tests are 150 pts. It is manageable but pretty unbearable with the amount of work.
Do your homework and you will pass. This class is not hard at all. It's only difficult when you don't pay attention.I could have easily got an A in this class. Mr. Barendse is a great teacher.
