Awesome professor to take for Modern Soc. Theory. Not the most exciting class but he makes it fun. Class consists of 2 papers, a midterm, and final, and a few short assignment that go toward your participation grade. Class is solely discussion.
Professor Barnes was an okay teacher. His discussions were pretty dry and attendance was mandatory even though the class was pretty big. He seemed to favor those who participated in class when grading. For someone who's a sociology major, this professor did not further my interest nor was he one of my favorites.
He is a very good professor, always prepared for class. does powerpoint lecture but incorporates real world examples and demonstartions. not boring at all, and he is good at what he does. will do good in this class as long as you do the work. very helpful if you ask.
he's a great proffesor that will keep you interested in class! he'll say anyhting to get his point across and make the class laugh =]
Had Prof. Barnes a few semesters ago...VERY easy "A" for me even though this was my first SOC class ever. He is funny in lecture, and I always enjoyed his class. Tests were so easy and if you understand the concepts of Sociology...the papers will be easy as well.
There is a lot of reading and the first half of the semester he goes through over 10 theorists. Which makes it a bit more difficult to study for the midterm... but the final is take home.I would have rather had the midterm take home and final in class since there isn't a lot of theories in the second half. He is tough on grading.
He was really cool, laid back! You are supposed to read and im sure it helps, but i didnt read at all and i got a decent grade. he has 2 papers due (not very long n not hard to do) he grades a lil bit hard tho. Midterm and final, give EC on tests! Study for the test n you will be ok! Gives study guides. Overall I liked him n would take him again
Theory itself is difficult.... he made theory understandable... there is a lot of writing and reading.. he does grade hard...but is willing to help...good prof.
Wonderful instructor. Always kept me interested, even at 8am! He's young so he likes to put things into a "younger" perspective. Totally recommend him.
His lectures are fun and interesting.a couple 1 page assignments that are super easy. 2 essays which aren't very difficult but he does grade a lil hard. his midterm & final are multiple choice matchin shortanswer and essay but he gives a study guide w/ everything. assigns alot of reading but its not essential to do. overall great prof. reccomend hi
Very prepared. Theory is pretty difficult, but he makes it understandable and you always know what he expects of you (he sends email updates weekly) a few one paged assignments, 2 challenging essays, 1 midterm, and a take home final. He knows a lot about pop culture and media, and makes discussions relevant and interesting. Always willing to help.
couple 1 page assignments that are super easy. 2 essays, i bs both and got Bs. 1 midterm & final both are multiple choice, matchin, short answer and essay.he gives a study guide. i never read the books and got a B in the class
i enjoyed being in his class. lots of lecture and note taking but it helps for the midterms and final. also he posts the lecture online but still go cuz you will understand the material much better. just participate in class and that will help your grade too. just do your work and you should do well in the class.
I have had Prof Barnes for 2 classes and although the material is hard, he will explain it until he is blue in the face. He wants to make sure the students understand. 2 Exams and 2 papers. Kind of a lot of reading but he has lecture notes on beachboard.
Professor Barnes is one of the best professors I've ever taken! He is quite passionate, although not an easy grader and requires a lot of reading but he is fair and excellent at clarifying the material in class. He makes it easy and understandable (especially theory!) and is always willing to help :) Definitely take him!!!!
He's one of the hardest professors I've ever taken. He wasn't approachable and was a hard grader. The papers were really hard and we had so much material to go through. He assigns really difficult readings and wants us to make sense of it on our own. Participation was worth 25% of grade but most were too lost to ever participate..not recommended
Maybe Barnes is a hard grader, and maybe he isn't. Or maybe it's the poster below who is an idiot and who failed the class, but rather than taking responsibility for his or her failing grade, has displaced unfounded blame on the instructor.
was not looking forward to this class but he made it soo interesting! participation really helps ur grade. there is a lot of difficult reading but he will go over important quotes and explain it until everyone understand. i would definitely recommend him!
Take him!!! He's an excellent teacher! Always prepared, on point, and his lectures are interesting & fun. He has very interesting videos he shows in class too. He's young at heart and can relate to any age group. So, read the readings and speak up and join the discussion!
MUST TAKE! Too bad i took him my last semester at LB, otherwise i would take all the classes he offered. Don't take him if you are looking for the easy A, take him if you love sociology, and want to learn something. Interesting lectures, and he assigns short but HARD reading, but he will NOT move on unless everyone is clear. PARTICIPATE for sure!
Keeps lectures interesting and his available if you get confused. Energetic teacher that keeps your attention. I highly recommed this prof. Makes a boring and dry topic interesting. Attend the class and participate and you will be ok.
Take him you wont regret it...you just might if you take anyone else!!!
great professor, 3 papers, and a final paper, and a few short assignments. No exams. Participation is a must. profoessor is always available to help. Will explain theory until everyone understands. Interesting lectures, not boring. I highly recommend professor Barnes, especially if you hate theory
My favorite professor this semester. Always focused and on point. Mandatory attendance but he gives you about 5-10 to get there after class starts. Very interesting lectures and relates his Power Points to real life scenarios. Watched a handful of movies and all of which were very entertaining and interesting. About four one page assignments, two 4-5 page papers, one midterm, and the final. Provides study guides, review session, answers questions through email, and gives extra credit. Great guy!
he was such a great professor. for my first sociology class he kept me quite interested. I ended up taking a second sociology class because I enjoyed his so much. only 2 papers and attendance is mandatory but worth it. I completely recommend this class
Pros: Really great professor. Cares & is passionate about the subject he teaches. You will enjoy his class a lot, because he makes it relatable & funny. Cons: 2 papers- he grades fair but pretty hard. Attendance is mandatory, at least at the beginning of the semester. He's always late to class and doesn't post on Beachboard. I recommend him though.
Very helpful with questions/hard concepts. 2 papers, midterm, final, and a few one page responses for homework. Hard grader so be sure to use the sociological terms in your papers rather than the everyday definition. You don't really need the textbooks but they help. Gives review sessions and study guides so that helps. I worked somewhat hard and got an A in the class. He does take attendance almost everyday so show up! Would recommend and take again.
Professor Barnes is an EXCELLENT teacher! He is so clear with the lectures and they are really really interesting! I strongly recommend him and come to every class, it's worth it. I bought the books and didn't read at all, & I barely got by with an A
Subject was kind of boring unless you're genuinely interested in this material. Although Prof. Barnes is very organized and clear on his lectures. Work load was manageable. Study all the term for the tests! And study the questions on study guide! Overall, great prof! Funny and relates to his students!
Really thorough and exciting teacher, he makes theory relatable, and interesting. Take him if you can.
One of the best professors I've had so far. Incredibly funny and creates a comfortable environment. His lectures are very clear and he shows interesting films. Work load is manageable and tests are not extremely hard, but not too easy. I HIGHLY recommend him.
He is one of the coolest professors I have had so far. He is really funny and made an 8am class intersting. The class was really cool and he helped make it really fun. He can grade kind of hard and loves participation. I recommend him alot, he was great.
he's an ok prof surly not the best.lecture kind of confusing cause talks strght from the reader & text.3 papers&1 final paper.grades kinda tough Participation is mandatory to get pts.i would highly recomend Prof Eric Rivera for any theory class (soc. 356 & 357) Rivera lectures very easy to understand unlike Barnes.1 good thing post lec on b-board
He grades as though he's reading a graduate student's paper, kinda nit-picky on the contents of what he wants on the paper. Lecture is interesting esp. days that are videos. STUDY for his exams (1 mid, 1 final) and ask him for help on the 2 papers he assigns. Overall, cool teacher, just a bit hard for a 100 class.
i highly recommend!!! don't really need the text book
One of my favorite professors at CSULB! He has a passion for what he teaches! I highly recommend you take his class! You will love it!
Great professor! I thoroughly enjoyed going to his class and I learned a lot and gained some need perspectives. Readings for almost every class but I barely read an still got an A. Go in and talk to him for papers he helps you out. need to study for tests but fairly easy. I recommend this class!
This is NOT an easy class. Although he is very clear while lecturing, there is a lot of work invoved in order to get an A. He assigns a lot of readings, 2 essays, a midterm, and a final that consists of multiple choice, matching, 3 short answer questions, and 2 long essay questions (3 pages each). Participation and attendance are mandatory!
Professor Barnes' lectures are full of enthusiasm & captures your interest! I looked forward to going to class! Tests are based primarily on his lectures, so pay attention & study your powerpoint lecture notes! Reading helps, but mainly need textbooks for essays. Grades a bit tougher on essays, just make sure to incorporate the terms/concepts well!
Extremely interesting and easy class. If you take notes, attend all classes, and pay attention to his examples given about a topic, you will do fine in his class. He is hilarious and made my 8 AM class really fun. He clarifies everything, so email him or go to his office. Overall, extremely helpful professor. I think he was my favorite professor.
He makes his lectures very engaging, and you will not be bored in his class because of his jokes. He is very coherent, and makes topics easy to understand and fun. Attending lectures will GREATLY help you. Tough on grading papers, but the amount of work for this class is reasonable. He made my 8AM class enjoyable. Highly suggest you take him!
Great professor, he is very clear in his lectures and provides great examples. The material in class is extremely interesting especially the video clips, which help prep you for the final. Not too difficult, just participate. Readings are long but are explained thoroughly in class(you get a good idea of the readings even if you don't read).
He his a helpful, smart and funny teacher. He is will to help you if you ask. If you read and understand the theories you will do fine. If you don't want to learn and want an easy A he is not the teacher for you. So please challenge yourself his class is worth it.
Very funny guy. Takes role so you have to go. Post notes online. STUDY NOTES AND TEST ARE EASY! He has the books in the library, I hardly read it though. Watch great movies. Two papers, two midterms, one page assignments once in a while. Test are long so you have to hurry but he gives extra credit. Take him he's fun :)
He is a great lecturer. He loves what he does and is very passionate of sociology. However, he is not easy. His essay assignment are a bit "weird", you have to compare and contrast concepts and write as if you were a theorist yourself. If you don't read and know your stuff, you will struggle. But overall, good professor. He is a Barcelona fan :)
Professor Barnes has a great sense of humor, which made class pretty interesting! Pretty easy class, just study the notes and follow whatever is on the study guide
Super easy professor. Really fun and interesting :) Tests, Essays, and assignments are pretty easy. He provides a study guide for all tests so just study that. Attendence is mandatory because he takes it at random times so just go to be sure. All notes posted online. TAKE HIM , EASY A :)
He is a great professor, very into what he is teaching. You may not always agree with what he thinks, but it's still an interesting class. There are a few little papers, like two big papers, a midterm, and a final. Textbook use is HIGH in this class.
Good professor overall, very helpful and tries to help you understand the concepts. I didn't use the textbooks much because for his midterm/final, all the info is in the lectures (which are posted online). Takes roll randomly, not all the time. Recommend to go to class for video. Easy overall!
Class was very interesting. two 5 page papers, class reactions to readings, a midterm, and final. I only used the book for writing the papers because your suppose to cite your work from it. Gives reviews prior to midterm and final which has everything you need to know and answers any question you have during class. One of my favorite professors
Good class, you must have the books the readings are a little hard at times but dont worry because he gives great lecture notes 2 or 3 papers 4 pgs each one exam essay questions such nice guys if you need help hes super willing.
The class was definitely interesting. Professor Barnes was funny but definitely be prepared for cussing. He assigns readings that I recommend you read. He takes attendance, so go to class. One midterm, one final (all lecture based). Go to study sessions. Two papers (4 to 5 pages) - not very difficult, but he grades hard.
Great professor. 2 papers. A midterm and a final. A couple of 1 pg. responses and thats it. If you go to class and read the readings assigned your good go. If you really try you can get the A.
Ridiculously awesome professor. Very VERY knowledgeable. I really can't say enough good things about him. He is always there for students, is super professional (yet approachable) and has an amazing way of teaching the subject. GO, BARNES!!!
I LOVED this class. Barnes is awesome. Two essays, some one page responses. Exams are written, but if you pay attention in class, you shouldn't have any problems. I never read the book. He assigns readings, and they're actually interesting (: Really glad I took this class.
Class is really simple and clear. If you go to class and take verbal notes, you are solid. He post lectures online. Everything is mostly common sense. Great teacher and good humor. Class is a walk in the park. 1 Midterm, 1 Final, 2 Papers
Great class. Barnes is a great teacher and makes the class interesting. 2 tests, 2 essays, and various one-page assignments throughout the semester. Go to the review session the TA holds and you will do well on the tests. Highly recommend.
One of the BEST sociology professors I've had at CSULB! very passionate about what he teaches and very thorough about what he wants with assignments. Very easy class if you read and attend lectures, also participate! Textbook required, not a lot of work various 1 page assignments throughout the semester and 3 papers plus the final paper. MUST TAKE!
I had Professor Barnes class M,W,F and I went to class 40% of the time. His lectures are helpful. He shows a lot of clips and uses great examples to help better understand the material. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final and THAT'S IT! I would soooooo take this class again in a heart beat. I would say he's probably the best SOC100 professor! GET HIM!!!!!
Professor Barnes is AMAZING. I entered my freshman year in college thinking i was going to be a psychology or photography major until i met him. He is very passionate about what he teaches, he's approachable and overall a great sociology teacher! HE IS HILARIOUS and overall his lectures are fun to participate in. SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM!!!!
Only had one midterm and one final. Very funny professor , nice, and helpful.
Only had one midterm and one final. Only had to do two essay papers which I thought were very simple and interesting.
I had him for 100 my first semester, and simply put his class was so excellent it made me completely confident that I had made the right choice in making Sociology my major. Now I've taken him for 447 and it's been another awesome experience. Only take him if you're interested in sociology though, don't waste his time or the rest of the class's.
He really makes you understand theory. He puts complicated concepts into easy terms and helps you learn. Super respectful and loves commentsquestions during class. He helps you become a better writer. If you have a problemquestion, he will won't stop helping until you fully understand. One of the best professors I've had.
he's good at lecturing but you don't necessary have to show up to class to understand the material since the textbook is also really useful. he takes random role. he's a really tough essay grader which led to my B, exams were easy. you could probably find an easier prof if you are looking for an A. did not expect this class to be my only B
He is funny and makes the lectures interesting. I absolutely loved this professor I would recommend taking him. He does not give much homework but the two essays he gives are important.
Professor Barnes was an amazing teacher. He made concepts very clear and he knows what he's talking about. Lags a little with emailing back students, but very helpful when you ask him questions. He shows a lot of clips & videos which help a lot with the concepts as well. Took attendance sometimes. Going to lectures really help.
This class challenges you, i'm not going to lie. But the reward afterwards is worth it. Your mind is enlightened. He is a tough grader, but to make you become a better writer. If you plan on going to grad school take him, if you want a fun experience take him. I earned an A in his class. Make sure to read, participate, and take notes.
Professor Barnes can be really intimidating on your first day of class, but by the end you will be so appreciative of his knowledge and passion for sociological theory. His classes are based off of him lecturing and powerpoint slides but they aren't boring because he is so involved and really knows how to explain what is going on in the readings.
TAKE HIM. My advice is to record his lectures however because he gives A LOT of info in class but when it comes time to write his essays, the recordings really help because you can go back. There are 3 essays and a final essay, and small assignments that count for participation. The class is not easy, but it isn't impossible either. Very helpful.
4 Essays and 1 Final Exam Essay. A few 1 page assignments and does grade participation throughout the whole semester. Tough Grader with papers and A LOT of reading! Reading is essential to pass and write all papers. Not an easy class but is possible to pass.
2 essays, 1 in class exam, 1 take home exam. he's a tough grader on essays; you really have to know the theory and apply it well. expect random assignments.
This was a pretty interesting class to take. Attendance is mandatory and he grades a little hard on participation but his tests are pretty easy, just make sure you study. There are 2 essays, a midterm, final and in class assignments every so often. Make sure he receives your assignments though because it is a big lecture hall and can get lost.
Barnes is an amazing professor and his lectures are very easy to follow. The tests are easy if you memorize the key words, and Barnes makes the concepts easy to understand. Overall a great class and a hilarious professor.
Barnes was amazing, I'd take him again if I could. This class was so interesting and I learned a lot, he is a very smart man. He's super funny too. Take him!
I tried taking as many classes with him from the start SOC 100 later 356(theory). Barnes is the only reason why i decided to choose sociology as a major. He is very passionate, smart, caring, and tries to work with his students. Do not be intimidated! I noticed hes a hard grader but record, listen, attend, and participate! Hes really fun and nice:)
This class was really interesting, he made the material easy and was very clear when he explained the topics. He is hilarious, and will help if you need it. We used the book quite a bit because we had readings almost every class meeting. Never a dull moment! Take notes in class and it will help with the study guides. 2 essays, hard grader on them.
super intelligent, but he's very intimidating. if you read, participate, and see him if you need help, you'll forsure do well. class was hard though. lots of critical thinking and difficult theories and theorists.
This is by far one of my favorite courses I have taken. Professor Barnes has a true passion for the subject and you will learn a lot in this course. Not an easy A, but if you attend and participate in lecture, put an effort into the papers, and do the readings, then getting an A is possible.
This class was one of the easiest I've taken so far. Professor Barnes is pretty chill, he curses quite a lot but respects everyone. We only had 2 papers due and 2 exams the whole semester. If you take this class DO NOT buy the books that are required for reading why? .. because you won't get tested on them and he doesn't check if you did read.
He is very passionate and really opens your eyes. He is patient and a very detailed lecturer. His lectures sometimes do get boring but he is funny enough to pull you back in. I highly recommend for pop culture. He's not a super easy A but if you do the work and show improvement he will work with you to get the grade you deserve.
This class was very informative and I learned a lot. I got an A on the midterm and final, but I ended up with a B due to lack of participation. He does mention that participation can help you get an A even if you fail the tests. He is also a hard grader on papers, but participate and you will do fine.
Super awesome professor! Lectures but always involves class and has a great sense of humor which makes it interesting. The 2 papers are a little daunting but he makes them easy and clearly outlines what he is looking for. Tests directly follow the study guide! Great professor!! You genuinely learn in this class it's very fascinating.
Amazing lectures and very interesting class. 2 papers, tough grader if you dont ty on them. 2 Test. Definitely would take again!
Class was very interesting but had a lot of heavy material. Readings for the first half of the class are more based on theory than the second half of the semester. Class is composed of two papers, midterm and a final (directly from the study guide). Professor is very knowledgeable and caring of students success.
Amazing class each lecture was current and never boring. Does not check the readings, so you have to be on top of the material because I failed to do so and got a "B". It will seem like an easy class but you have to put more effort than you think. Love his lectures. Two big exams, like two papers, attendance is taken at random, and participate!
There is a textbook for this class but I didnt need it. His lecture notes are online but he makes his lectures a lot easier when he explains it. He finds ways to make sociology easier to understand. He is funny and this class is easy if you show up. Its also interesting.
In my two years at CSULB, this is my first B. If you want an A, talk about how privledged white people are, simple as that.
Professor Barnes is extremely passionate about sociology. Every lecture is entertaining and such an eye opener. This course is an easy B. He takes attendance at random. There are two papers, a midterm, and a final. Participation, attendance, and small assignments are also a part of your grade. His exams are based on his study guides.
Easy class and easy A. The lectures are fun and informative. Attendance isnt mandatory.
Quite an interesting class and great professor. His lectures are very intriguing and he's very funny! Definitely not an easy A, participation is a must if you want to secure one. He is also a pretty tough grader on the two papers he assigns. There are a number of small, one page assignments that won't take too much time at all. Great class overall!
His lectures are amazing and fun. He makes the concepts easier to understand. Take good notes. His test are based on the his power points. Participation does help your grade. You need to get in real detail with his essays because he does grade them quite hard. Overall fun class. If you miss class you do miss what might help you in the test.
If you want to get an A you need to participate! Lots of readings but you can get an A without reading. Two papers (take your time because he does grade hard) and two exams that are 1/3 multiple choice/matching and 2/3 short essays and a long essay but he gives you study guides for them! Very kind, funny, and caring. Not an easy A but def worth it!
Dr. Barnes is another awesome Soc professor. He is another blunt sociology professor. Gives great vibes. He's understanding. And will guide you towards succeeding in his class. I recommend Dr. Barnes, it may not be an easy A, theorists are hard to understand but he will sit with you to help you understand.
As long as you attend class and do the study guides for the two exams youll be fine. He is a really awesome professor, just make sure to actively participate in lectures.
Fantastic professor! Helpful and intelligent. Class had one test and two papers which were easy to follow. Just make sure you read and learn the material. Great professor super nice funny guy who makes you laugh and learn at the same time. Also he wants you to succeed and grades not just on grades but on effort and improvement which is great.
Assigns lots of reading (but you don't have to read it). Need to participate in class if you want that A. Tough grader on the 2 papers you have to do. Gives study guides for tests. USE THEM! they really help. Great Lectures! oh and does random attendance.
Barnes is an awesome professor. His class is heavily based off of lectures. I went to class everyday but never read and still passed with a B. He requires 2 papers, the first one is pretty fun and the second is easy as long as you pay attention during class. He takes attendance each day for credit so show up! Midterm and final require short essays.
He replaced my previous professor and it was love at first sight. He is really funny and curses a lot. not many assignments and if there are then they aren't so time consuming. 1 or 2 papers. A teacher you never forget, very clear lectures. loves questions
AMAZING professor. Strong voice that carries throughout the class and his lectures flow so well. Six 1 page responses, 2 midterms with multiple choice and essay questions, and 2 papers around 4-5 pages each. TAKE HIS CLASS!! His notes for feedback on your papers is kind of chicken scratch, so ask him after class.
TAKE HIM! He's so funny and goes into debt in his lectures. Make sure to visit office hours he WILL HELP YOU.
Lectures are super interesting and will help you on exams. He demands participation so make sure he remembers your name and you will be fine. There were readings but you'll still pass without reading. Tests were easy if you studied everything in the study guides. Two essay papers that required effort for a good grade. Awesome class & professor!!
Professor Barnes takes attendance randomly. There are only 2 papers and about 6 one page assignments. There is 1 midterm and 1 final. I would recommend his class because it is very interesting and there will be a lot of laughs throughout the semester. Engage in discussions because that will make it interesting. Overall, He is a great professor! :)
Micheal Barnes is a pretty chill professor that values participation. His lectures are pretty informational but can sometimes get bland and boring. It is easy to lose focus in the class so don't use electronics if you don't need to. He takes attendance randomly and makes the class watch boring documentaries.
It's obvious Dr. Barnes cares about his students. He's HILARIOUS (and a bit vulgar), but can be serious when need be. He rarely cancels class and he's easy to reach during office hours. Aside from the textbook readings, the only homework he assigns is the occasional 1 pg. writeup. Two major papers, but they're easy As. You won't regret taking him!
Hands down best prof! He makes sure you know your stuff for all the papers and definitely tries to get you to engage in his lectures. A lot of reading but his lectures DEFINITELY help you understand so it's crucial to attend class. 8 easy one page assignments, 3 essays and 1 take home essay final. Take him and you won't regret it!
His lectures were very interesting! He is a very funny professor and is very understanding. There were two papers - a research based one and a text based one. I didn't really use the textbook, I just studied notes from lectures out of class and I got an A on both the midterm and final. Just pay attention and you'll do fine!
His lectures are interesting. He presents in the material in a way that is fun. Participation is part of the grade, but it won't affect you all that much if you never speak up in class. There are two big papers, and he is kind of a tough grader so make sure you really try hard. You don't need the textbooks. The midterm and final are pretty easy.
His lectures are engaging but overall not the best unless you are really passionate about theory which in my case i am not. This isn't the best topic but he tries his best to make you engage and not put u to sleep. He gives us three papers and the final is a paper. And he gives you random one page writing assignments.
Attendance isn't mandatory but he does take roll. Participation is part of grade. Assigns easy one pagers and two main paper (4-5 pgs). Only two exams, midterm/final. They are fairly easy as long as you study. Consist of multiple choice, matching, a few short answer, and essay question but it isn't as scary as it seems. So long as you study.
The class was ok. Straight lectures, participation part of the grade. 8 one page papers, no big deals on those. Two 5 page papers, not difficult but grading criteria not clear. Mideterm and final are cumbersome, study guides are just words that cover the entire portion of class, final is cumulative but take home and 2 1000 word responses only
idk how I got an A in this class. For his essays you have to write exactly what he wants to hear to get a decent grade. He gave my class warnings for not responding to his questions in class and often expected very specific responses. It was a really weird class and was pretty stressful but I did learn a lot. Good luck if you have to take this clas
Barnes is a great professor. He is very clear on what he wants on his assignments and he also takes in consideration hard work of students therefore he doesn't provide extra credit. It is three main assignments, a mid term, and a final. He provides his own textbooks for the class but is affordable. He has a lot of charisma, cares for his students.
Michael is an amazing prof who made lectures very interesting. All lecture power points are uploaded on BeachBoard. There were 2 papers,1 midterm, & 1 noncumulative final. Participation matters as well. If you don't like to participate in class, you can email him which counts for your participation grade. He sets up the class for students to pass
He is a great teacher and is funny. I really enjoyed this class and it was an easy class to pass. It is very important to read most of the time because if you don't then you will get lost. He only assigns 2 papers, 1 midterm, and a final. The papers are easy to write but if you are stuck ask him for help. He is always open to helping.
He is very passionate about sociology and wants his students to do well. Although, you do have to work to get the A. Don't get the book because I didn't read towards the end of the sem bc his lectures are good enough. go to office hours and clarify things with him! he seems intimidating and this class made me stress out a bit but I secured the A!!
For a professor that teaches the different theorists of Sociology, he makes the material of the course very intriguing and funny. Explains the concepts clearly if there is trouble understanding them the first time around. Use of examples are a huge aid with learning the different theories of Sociology. Overall, one of the best professors at LB!
Prof Barnes takes literal years to grade anything. You really don't know how you're doing in the class for weeks at a time because your grade won't be posted. The second paper I turned in was graded a few days before the final. Grading criteria is unclear too. Hilarious caring guy that almost NEVER gives out As. Easy B class, impossible A class.
This is the second class I have taken with Barnes. He's very passionate and enthusiastic to teach which made the class so engaging.
great professor, funny, helpful presentations. if you show up to class and pay attention to his lectures, you don't need the book, save your money
Don't buy the textbook because you will never need to read it since his tests are based off his lectures. Professor Barnes is a tough grader, but he are willing to help you if you reach out to him. (6) one page assignments, 2 papers, and 2 tests. For this class, you will get what you work for.
I took Professor Barnes for Summer 2020. Despite the pandemic the Professor was adaptive to distant learning.. He explains all of the important details and usually thats the focus/hint on what his papers will be about. We had to do several 1 page papers reviewing the book and a 6-8 pg midterm and 10-12pg final. Will be taking him again next summer
Dr. Barnes is phenomenal, teaches extensive topics that could be confusing but is taught in a way that anyone can understand and truly observe. You learn in this class, he encourages participation not in a forceful way it happens naturally because everyone has an opinion on pop culture. Unfortunately I had to drop to get a 2nd job due to COVID.
First half of the semester was watching recorded lectures and answering discussions. Second half was watching recorded lectures and discussing over zoom meetings. Make sure you study for the midterm and final, he does give you a study guide and helps prepare you. He's a very good and understanding professor who truly cares about his students.
Very great professor. At first I was scared to take a soc class because of the fact that it seems so difficult. However, He makes it very easy and is very understanding. He makes lectures interesting. and you should be fine as long as you do the work and show up
Professor Barnes is my favorite professor ever! He's relatable, understanding, funny, and reasonable! The class is super organized and he makes it so easy to learn and understand concepts because his lectures are so cool and interesting. TAKE HIM!
Dr. Barnes is incredible. His lectures are interesting despite how dry the subjects can be. 2 papers, 1 page opinion papers throughout the semester, and 2 exams. Everything is spread out so it doesn't feel like a lot of work. I honestly did not purchase the textbook and I still did really well on everything just by listening during the lectures.
He made learning pop culture very interesting! Even tho class was online during COVID, he made it easy to do. His lectures are very clear. I honestly didnt do the readings but still understood what we were talking about because of his lectures! He is there to help you succeed and always in his office hours.
Great professor! His work will not be hard as long as you listen to the recordings. His lectures are also super interesting. The only thing I kinda don't like is how there is no way of telling what your grade for the class is because he doesn't really input grades except for the midterm and papers until finals week comes. Other than that, its good!
I dont know why professor Barnes doesn't have a 5/5. Hes the best professor at csulb. There's a reason why his classes are always filled. If you get the lucky chance, take him.
His lectures are amazing! I'm sure I may be a so-so writer but I feel like he grades a bit harder than most professors, but then again, he's passionate about his field and wants the correct information.
Such a great professor. Fascinating lectures. He makes it easy to understand. All the work is made very clear, and in accordance with the syllabus. I will be taking another class with him in the Spring. I would definitely recommend taking his classes.
3 (4page papers double space) he also gives 1 page assignments , no discussion post, or online test, he is lecture heavy, participation matter, late work is accepted but 1 letter grade for each day that is late..
Professor Barnes was literally the best! He's so funny I wish I had him in person. There are only 2 papers one at the beginning and end of the semester that ranges from 3-4 pages which are super easy. Discussion boards are evenly distributed throughout the semester. His lectures are also interesting! you can tell he is very passionate about Soc
Professor Barnes expects a lot from students in this level 100 course. This class is an easy B class; you must go above and beyond to get an A in the class. Vocal participation counts a lot, which sucks if you're one of those shy students who never unmute.
his class is great he is very passionate about sociology. there are 2 papers in this class but participation matters which is why I wish we had his class in person. and try to respond to your peers as many as you can on the discussion board if you're uncomfortable participating in the lecture since he counts it as participation points too.
TAKE HIM! TAKE HIM HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT CSULB. I took him for Soc 357 and Soc 356, he lectures heavy but the lecture is always interesting. He wants all of his students to pass, so even if you are struggling in the class, you still have hope to pass. He accepts lake work too. He's so funny and you can tell he really cares about teaching.
I took 447 a year ago and I'm taking 357 now. He keeps you entertained during lectures which I think makes it easier to retain the material. He can be just a bit of a tough grader, nothing crazy, but it makes you a better writer, etc. I recommend always asking questions because he cares. You rock Professor Barnes.
Professor Barnes is the best professor at CSULB. Barnes lectures are so entertaining and hilarious. He made the class easy because he made everything so relatable. Barnes is just a fly professor. Take him! It will be your favorite class ever. Also he accepts late work which most professors dont. Barnes wants you to succeed!
Professor Barnes is the best professor at CSULB. Barnes lectures are so entertaining and hilarious. He made the class easy because he made everything so relatable. Barnes is just a fly professor. Also he accepts late work which most professors dont. Its actually 1/3 taken off each day not a full letter grade Barnes wants you to succeed!
Overall, I am enjoying Prof Barnes' class! He's a great lecturer in that he is clear and engaging. Assignments are clear and straightforward. Sometimes the readings are excessive when it comes to preparing you for the lecture. But overall, solid class.
I am currently taking him in person this semester, and he is really awesome! I find his lectures to be quite interesting, and the terms in the lectures are pretty common sense. If you are planning to take Soc 100, you should take it with him.
I love Barnes he is such a great professor, you can tell he teaches because he is passionate about it. He makes lectures more of a group discussion which helps with the understanding of topics. You most definitely have to participate for points and attend class. He is very funny and so chill.
If I could give him 10 stars, I would. Great lectures, makes everything relatable n easy to understand. He challenges the way you think. That's the way Soc should be taught. It's not mundane at all. Gives a study guide, records, n posts his lectures. He has a great sense of humor and is very intelligent, but is honest and humble about it. Love him!
I suggest reading ahead so that lectures would make sense and be engaging. I would definitely reach out to him to clarify interpretations of readings or lectures. In terms of exams, it is heavy on writing and he expects academic/detailed/professional writing level (think of it like an AP LIT writing). Lecture slides and BB lacks organization.
The best professor in the sociology department. I took his class twice because of how much I loved his lectures. He's a tough grader for essays, but if you're ok with B's then it's nothing much. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'd miss a lot of information because of how fast paced his class is. Manageable class if you stay on top of your work.
He's very passionate about sociology, but he's a very tough grader. There are two papers (4-5 pages), a mid-term (multiple choice with some essay questions), and the final, which is two essays (1,000 words each). I couldn't get more than a B+ in any of them. I wanted to take soc 356 with him, but I'm really glad I didn't. It would've ruined my GPA.
He is a tough grader. Participation matters in this class. He is passionate about what he talks about but it just doesn't come off as interesting. He takes attendance so make sure to show up to class, cannot miss more than 2 days. There are a lot of discussion questions, make sure to reply to others for participation points.
Need to go above and beyond to get an A. Grades papers harshly and expects you to know a lot for a 100 course. Constantly emphasizes how important in-class participation is, which can either help your hurt your grade. Very slow email replies. Wouldn't recommend taking him if your major is impacted, it could hurt your chances. But decent lectures
Barnes is a great professor and his lectures are pretty interesting. Structure of class is clear and there is a lot of reading. Likes to give lots of B's on essays and tests; tough grader if you want an A. You have to like the subject for this class to be interesting and captivating for you to really dig into the content and do well.
I would take this class again if I could. The lectures are very captivating and he is very passionate in what he teaches. He is a tough grader and it's hard to get an A, but if you attend all the lectures and engage with him in class you should get a very good grade since he takes that effort into consideration for your final grade.
good professor. There is a lot of reading and writing.
I liked this professor, his lectures were interesting. You can see that he is very passionate about this subject. I will say that he is a tough grader. Participation is a big part of your grade and he constantly reminds you. Overall, he is a great professor and I would take him again.
He is a very tough grader, but if you pay attention and take notes you should be fine. PLEASE PARTICIPATE !!!! Participation and attendance is so important for this class. Three essays, five one page assignments, and one Final essay. No quizzes.
I was beyond scared of taking this course based on the previous reviews. YES, this course is tough and definitely not an easy A. You will have to put in much of your time in the essays and exams BUT it is doable ! Professor Barnes makes lectures funny and interesting which helps in understanding the dense material. Highly recommend!
This professor has a hard class theory is difficult to understand but I enjoy coming to this class because of how the class is structured, you have to participate which means the other students are involved, its one of the only classes where I know my class mates because of that and he makes and effort to help by providing pdf book pages to help.
Barnes truly cares and is passionate about theory, which is good, he tries his best to make his lectures interesting because theory itself is not the most joyful read. Do not fall behind in the readings or else you will get lost in the class because he does not wait, he keeps on moving forward. Papers are super specific on his grading as well.
Dr Barnes is great, not my favorite but yes inspirational. We learned important world matters and how can we change society from a sociological standpoint. Papers were not difficult, yet they were? 3 papers, discussion post, and final
Dr. Barnes is very straight up. His lectures are very engaging, and you should participate or the class won't be fun. I don't know how I got an A, I didn't read the textbook at all, so I don't think it is worth buying, but the Ereader is your best friend in this class. His lectures go over EVERYTHING on the exams and materials, so pay attention!
Barnes is very passionate on his teachings. He is also very blunt. Do not fall behind with the material because it is a fast pace class. He does record his lectures which has helped for the papers and exams. He can be a tough grader but if you pay attention, you will pass.
He teaches the lessons laid back and in a way you can understand. He tends to make the class laugh, choose him if you want to avoid a boring lecture.
Very lecture heavy and is a tough grader; however, participation and attendance is a heavy influence on your final grade. The concepts are hard to grasp, but professor does a great job at breaking down concepts with examples. You NEED the book because your papers require you to reference directly from the book which impacts your overall grade too.
Prof Barnes is candid and hilarious. His class was the most riveting class I have ever taken. Never a dull moment in his class. Class discussions are always so interesting and I always looked forward to attending his class. He is super chill and very passionate about Sociology. Easily my favorite class of the semester.
Great professor. my favorite one so far in my years at CSULB. I love his teaching and doesn't make class boring. we watching very interesting videos that helped us understand the concepts of sociology. TAKE HIM If you can !
Professor Barnes is passionate but tough. The workload is heavy, with lots of reading and writing. However, his lectures are engaging, and tools like Unstuckstudy can help with study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Super funny guy who had amazing lectures! He is very accessible through email and office hours if you want help with your essays. The exams are online! Participation matters so show up, but you won't mind because the class is interesting. 10/10 professor
Attendance & participation are part of your grade but he makes class fun so you won't mind. There are assigned readings every class but I rarely read them & did good. There are 3 big papers and a few one page responses throughout the semester. Overall really great class & an amazing professor!
You will be writing a decent amount of papers and he is a pretty tough grader. There isn't really a rubric either, so you have to ask him directly for feedback if you want to know why you got the grade you got. The lectures can also be boring at times, despite how much he emphasizes on participation. Attendance is also taken randomly .
I absolutely loved Prof. Barnes. He is so passionate about Sociology and it shows in his lectures. Attendance is part of your grade, but his lectures are very interesting so you won't want to miss them! He doesn't have a clear rubric for his writing assignments, just guidelines, so I recommend asking him for feedback after you get your papers back.
He's passionate, but no clear rubric. Due to a mental breakdown, he gave feedback on paper 1 the day before paper 2 was due. Often late, random attendance is 25%. Expects perfect papers, grades tough. Big lecture, says participation matters but unclear how he tracks participation in such a big class. Hard A—avoid if possible.
The professor was great. It is very important to engage in the discussions in class based on the assigned reading. The course is difficult to understand but barnes does not fail in breaking it down. Only way to pass is not missing any assignments, essays, and participate and be present. DO THE READINGS.
He is one of the best sociology professors! He is very thorough and breaks down the theory to make it understandable. Attendance is mandatory, and you must do the readings, but it makes for an engaging lecture. I would hands down take him again!
Barnes is my favorite professor at CSULB by far. Funny, great at breaking down theory, replies to emails quickly. Be sure to participate (25%) He ticks your name off when you speak. Gives general feedback on essays in class but will respond to your particular essay if you email him about it. Reading heavy but as to be expected with theory. 10/10
this guy really loves his job, and it shows through his lectures. very interesting and entertaining, makes me wish lectures were longer lol. very few hw assignments that are pretty easy, though papers are a bit heavy. exams are based on lectures so as long as you've paid attention/participate, you're good. always available for questions/feedback.
