He mostily bases his grades on tests. He gives u test on like eight or nine sections. gives very little classwork and he gives you like 40 problems of hw everyday. Give little extra credit too. You have to do really good in the exams b/c thats the whole grade of the class. Give like four exams and the final. I wish he would base his grading like i
He half fast teaches the lessons and the quizzes and his test do not match his teaching.
If your good at math he is a great teacher...if u have trouble with math start looking for other teachers period....... he is helpful if you ask him for help otherwise youll have trouble.... but hes a nice person..... so think about it
If your good at math he is a great teacher...if u have trouble with math start looking for other teachers period....... he is helpful if you ask him for help otherwise youll have trouble.... but hes a nice person..... so think about it
this teacher was releitivly easy then again ..im smart and things ocme easy to me.. so if you r like me then he is the right teacher if u need to have your hand held every step of the way then run ..... the perks even if u get a c or b in the class atleast his looks make up 4 it all
He is the best teacher. He makes math problems easy and you will get an good grade with his hand-out quizzes. You will love math if you take him.
He is super hot. Easy A in his class. He gives extra credit and really care for students. When you want help, you also can reach him in his on-line office hour which is super cool. You can chat him with math problems on line. Take him and you will get an easy A.
Despite the fact that this teacher is smoking hot...his teaching skills are so not. Very very ambiguous teacher, so if yoru into lecture me and get straight to the point. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... unless you want eye candy of course!
Professor Bateman is a very nice professor who cares for his students. He will do anything just to make his students pass his students pass with a good grade. He will always try to make you feel good or proud of yourself by getting a "C" in an exam or lower by comparing you to his other classes. Definitely recommend him!
Bateman is an amazing professor. He takes the time to teach and get to know his students. He has online office hours before tests and quizzes where you can ask any last minute questions. Definitely take this him.
tough teacher, but he teaches what you need to know; he'll really prepare you for the next math class, but tough teacher. math isn't an easy subject, so study hard and form a study group. go to his office hours, he really makes things clear.
Bateman is a extremely good teacher. his exams are extremely hard but he does prepare you for them. his final wasn't that hard compare to his other exams. he gives homework but its not a lot. all i can say is be in a look out for problems that involve absolute values.
This man is a great teacher and loves what he does. He is young and very energetic and passionate about math. He makes math very interesting and enjoyable. A few of his test where challenging, but you never felt unprepared. He gives HW point which helps out and wants his students to do well. He will make you earn your grade so don't slack off.
Do not take him during Summer! He is fast pace.
Bateman has a genuine concern for his students. If you don't understand the material, go to his office hours. You're really not sacrificing anything by going to them, and he will give you all the help you need outside of class. In class he's very energetic and easy to talk to, and makes the material pretty easy to understand. Definitely recommended
Bateman as an easy teacher. At a certain point of the semester he let you drop one of your bad test and he help u also in his office.
He is a very nice prof. exams are pretty easy if you study and practice. He doesn't let you retake exams or hw.Pretty much easy 15pts for showing up on friday for activities. Hw are done after every section but only turned in on the exam day, so you have time to catch up.
Mr. Bateman is not the professor to take if you have a learning disorder or severe testing anxiety. He is fast paced and lied about the extra credit he promised. His tests are not hard, but complex and he doesn't give any study guides. There wasn't even a final exam review. About 60% of the class dropped. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Bateman is the man! He is so clear and concise that the only way you could misunderstand the material is your own damn fault. He's very energetic and obviously enjoys not only teaching math, but the math itself.
He's a great teacher, very enthusiastic about the material. Take him!! Also, he's a hottie! :)
He is more than willing to help, that is one of the best things about him. We had 4 exams (100pts), an cumulative final (200 pts) studying previous test will help, 60 pts worth of hw, and at some point gives extra credit. His carefree attitude helps make math class less stressful.
He is an intelligent person, who enjoys the subject he teaches. I can tell that his understanding is quite intuitive, so his teaching is very clear! The classroom is always lively as he cares about the success of his class. If you love math, take this guy because he will be able to visualize and understand your questions better than most other can.
very good
Bateman's great; the kind of teacher you wouldn't mind having really early in the morning. Even then, you'll still understand the material because of how thorough he is! If you take notes and do all your homework you're going to be fine.
Prof. Bateman is a fantastic teacher who teaches calculus in a way that makes sense! His tests can be challenging but he gives credit for homework which helps. If you want to learn calculus, take Bateman. His office hours are also helpful if you are able to go. He wants everyone to get a good grade so as long as you try, you will be fine!
He is a very math teacher I have so far. I found him very helpful, and I really enjoy his lectures. He just gets you through what you need. Office hours help a lot, because he'll give you tips to study for exams.
Great teacher and funny and clear speaking and very understandable!!! Great for summer session!!!:)
awesome teacher had him for math 180 and 190
Took for math 73...he goes very fast, and only gives a couple o fminutes for questions day before quiz is a study day, which is ok but he doesn't really go over the material, quizes are homeowrk questions !!! unless he forgets what he assigned for homework then ... you get randomed questions, if u get math take him if not fins someone else
He's a very fair teacher. He's willing to help those in need and is very fair on the exams/quizzes. Quizzes are from the HW and lectures verbatim.
IF YOU REALLY WANTTO STUDY MATH TAKE HIS CLASS.I ADMIRE HIS WONDERFUL LECTURE.I THINK HE IS ONE OF 5THE BEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD
wonderful teaching.best. generous.geneous.helpful.alpha and omega.perfect. all good things can describe him. even though you will be fail the class, you better take his class, you will get something from him. even you got a C this class, you will get an A for 191 easily.I haven't ever had like this amazing class before.take his awesome class!!!
Professor Bateman is awesome! I took trig with him during winter session. I'd say my math skills have always been pretty weak, but he still took the time to help me do well. He makes things clear and is really happy to help students. He's not boring and he's very reasonable when grading tests. Also very intelligent. I definitely recommend him!
Overall he is a funny teacher who loves to prepare you for a university. He doesnt care if you are absent or not, you are an adult. The only downside is his tests are hard. My advice to winter term, do ALL the homework problems and read his notes, that can save you from a C and be careful on his tests, mistakes add up haha
he is the best math teacher, no doubt. he is so helpful and nice, take his class.
He is an amazing teacher. He gets lazy sometimes but he cares about his students. His tests are hard and his final is really long but overall, even if you get a lower grade you still probably learned A LOT!
Not that bad of a class. This guy knows his stuff. Teaches really well. Pretty easy :)
He was the first class I've taken as a college freshman and I loved it. One of the best teachers I've had. His lectures are easy to follow, gives lots of examples. And he's funny. If you need the help he'll give it. The only downside is that the tests are hard and I regret not studying for them. I definitely recommend him!
Bateman's class is a wake-up call. His lectures are fantastic and he is very enthusiastic about the subject and teaching his students. However, if you want a good grade you have to earn it. If you like math and learning, I highly recommend him. But if you don't care to learn and just want a good grade, don't waste your time. He is really funny too.
Winter 2013 - Mr. Bateman is an enthusiastic, intelligent, funny, and amiable instructor. Extremely helpful, and considerate to students. A good role model for other El Camino teachers to follow. Tip for earning a good grade: Complete homework assignments, and attend lectures to get a solid grasp of the material.
Definitely knows the subject, but really does not care if students show up or not. Made it clear the 1st day that he would be happy if no one came to class. Lectures well, but if you want a teacher who cares, take someone else. Will answer ?'s but you can tell he does not want to. Just a job to him. It's a struggle to attend every day.
Very great teacher. You will learn a lot in his classes. He truly cares about teaching.
He's really easy as long as you pay attention to his lectures and DO THE HOMEWORK. You need to put alittle more effort in to his class than others.
very awesome teacher, he explains very well just pay attention! and do the hw which is very easy. this class is all about studying on your own time!
This guy is great at teaching math. His tests are rumored to be challenging, but they really arn't that bad if you do ALL your homework(including online worksheets). My best advice for this class would be ; pay attention in class, do your homework, and ask questions... Not a bad teacher at all really preps you for upcoming math classes. GOOD LUCK
Professor Bateman is awesome. He treats you like an adult and holds only you accountable for your grade. Studying on your own time is always essential for any math class. He makes sure the material is understood. Speak up if you are confused! I changed my major to math in part because of him. I've had him for three times and I'm going for more.
Very good instructor. Students just need to take initiative to understand the material.
I took him a year ago for geometry and could NOT stand him I was nervous to take a class with him again but I had no choice but to do so due to my work schedule. This man has completely redeemed himself in my eyes, I took him for pre cal over the summer and he was amazing! Material was clear, extremely helpful and very thoughtful.
I can't get used to his way of teaching: 5 exams and 4 homework total. Students at this level still need validation with a quiz! This guy explains concepts fine in class but on the test he gives you a problem that is 100x harder. I did ALL my homework including evens and still cant't get a passing grade. And I'm in the HTP! Avoid!
Let it be known, he thinks of you as an adult & you don't really have to attend class. That's what most people take advantage of & miss & then complain about failing. He's good at his job. I passed with a C but that's only because I didn't buy the text book. I went to class everyday & learned it all from him & that's how I passed, but just barely.
Extremely hard tests but very good teacher. Hard to get an A
Challenging class. Do not take it unless you're gunna do problems everyday and take it seriously. Tests are very hard and half the class drops. If you want an easy A, this is not the class.
Mr. Bateman was a very helpful profossor. He helped me during his office hours and told me to come back any time even if I was not taking his class. His tests are pretty hard, so do a lot of practice problems before hand and you will be good. It is very hard to get an A, I received a B even though I felt like I studied a lot.
If you're here because the placement test screwed you up but you REALLY knows your stuff, he does not waste your time! He barely offers homework, so that means you don't even need your book for 90% of the time. Although many people dropped cus they take that for granted & just show up for test days, which are tough if you don't go to class everyday
I took him last semester. He is well known to be the hardest Calc prof. I learned a lot but I had to drop because my test scores were well below 70% . He is a harsh grader and his test questions are not like the ones he goes over. He also has MC and TF questions on the test that are there to trick you. I really regret taking this class.
Stay away from him, the test was way too difficult compared to HW problems. I studied very hard still bombed the test, ended up dropping. would not recommend him to anyone!
Professor Bateman is very helpful to his students, but this class is way too hard for your average student to pass. I had some prior knowledge of the course material but I was still struggling through the whole course. The tests in particular are too difficult, you'd be better off taking Meyer or Mata
Someone said it before he's one of the hardest cal professor and I have to agree. the test is full of tricky questions that doing all the HW won't guarantee you a b or even a c. Beware he's not an easy teacher!
Best Math Teacher Ever if you like to learn!
Professor Bateman is very passionate about math. He offers a lot of help during office hours but his tests are painfully hard. Everything you will be tested on must either be 100% memorized or you really know the chapters front to back. The tests are based on how well you understand each concept and there are a bunch of proofs. Inspiring but hard..
Mr Bateman is a good professor. You have to have good study habits and be able to retain information really well in order to pass. If you study his notes, read the textbook, practice, practice, practice, and do the problems in the textbook then you'll pass.
Hardest math class I've ever taken and Ive taken Calc at highschool. He is a tough grader and maybe the toughest math prof at school. Half of the MESA students that was studying was from his class. His test are confusing and makes you not want to go to class. Only take him if you want to have no life.
He goes into details about Calculus that I have never learned before, and I've taken Calculus 3 times. You'll come out of this class able to kick any integral's butt, but don't expect it to be easy. He makes it a challenge, and you have to learn proofs and theorems. Definitely worth taking if you are a STEM major. You can tell he's passionate.
He is the worst professor I've ever taken. His tests are all extremely difficult and if you haven't already taken pre-calc there is no way you are going to pass. He expects you understand the information as soon as it has been taught, and hates when you ask questions for clarification. I'm not bad at math and I dropped this course!
Awesome lectures but really horrible tests. The test are not like the hw or his examples. If you want an easy A do not take this class. You need to set aside 2 hours every day and I'm not exaggerating. He tells you that you will need 2 hours everyday. I dropped but stayed for his lectures for my next time with an easier class
Prof. Bateman is an amazing lecturer. He is old school, no homework, no quizzes, &attendance is not mandatory, BUT if you skip class i guarantee that you will not pass! The class revolves around 5 exams worth 100 points & a final of 200. Show up, ask questions if needed, practice problems, review notes, & stay motivated! PPL will drop. Goodluck.
Professor Bateman helped me tremendously during his office hours to go over concepts that I may have still not quite grasped. He helps with understanding how you made a mistake mathematically and to learn how not to make the mistake again. I definitely recommend him for Intermediate Algebra. During lecture, he always asks if he is being clear.
Attend class every day, do all worksheets, and participte in test prep. I had the opportunity to enroll in professor Batemans Math 190 Fall 2015 class, which started 7:00 AM Monday-Thursday. He is by far the best 190 professor, due to the fact he will force you to learn great study habits. Completely prepares for up Math 270 and Physics 1 series.
Took him spring 2015. His lectures are great & you honestly learn so much from him, BUT his tests are very tedious. For the smallest mistakes, expect to be docked down points. He ended up replacing a test grade & curving the grading scale. However, the curving only depends on how well your class is doing. Good luck (:
This professor is far the worst math professor I'v ever taken at El Camino College. His class feels like an English class because he expects you to memorize literally the whole book. His tests are no where near his hw and lectures. Do not take this professor if you want to get an A. I literally studied everyday for about 4-5 hours and failed.
Take professor bateman if you enjoy a challenge. He certainly makes you work for your grade, even in 180. I was glad I took him for pre-calc because I couldn't have been more prepared for 191. Be sure to do ALL of his homework because he tends to put the harder problems on the exams.
He's a good professor, but sometimes he will just solve a problem without explaining much about it which confused me a lot. Exams are pretty tough, so make sure to do homework and study. He always asks if everyone understands, and if they don't to say something. He also doesn't take attendance, but I suggest you show up every day!
Professor Bateman is the greatest math teacher I've ever had. He genuinely has a great passion for math and I can tell he really cares about his students' learning. If you enjoy math and actually want to leave this course with a sense that you know calculus then take his class. This class will well prepare you for future courses, but it is hard.
Tests are everything, tough class, just lectures the whole class
Prof. Bateman is an excellent teacher. I dropped out of Calculus twice before succeeding to pass when taking Math 7 with him. Coming back to high level math classes after 7 years in the game industry was brutal, but Bateman had the expertise to help me finally succeed. He is very concise and charismatic during lectures, I didn't miss a single day.
"I don't look at the work on your paper, just the name, then I'll just give you credit... About 35% of my students pass the final..." For some, that first part sounds like an easy A, but he gives *so* little credit for any of the work that it doesn't even matter if you do it or not. If you learn things quickly however, you'll do fine.
couple trick questions on exam clear lecture helps if your stuck
Worst teacher I've ever experienced. He see's math as an art, so if you don't see it the same way, good luck passing. He expects you to know everything he's covering as we go over it in class. His tests are nothing like the textbook or what we cover. No extra credit, the points are only from tests. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions.
I feel like you should go into this class if math is something you really like. You will need to know a lot of detail behind equations and functions for tests. Attendance not mandatory but don't ditch. I struggled a lot in this class and he never told us what would be on an exam until exam number 5 (drops your lowest score). quite handsome(;
Let me get this out of the way first, it's not going to be easy. That being said, his lectures are very clear and concise. His level of expertise in his field is second to none. It may be tough to follow at times, but he will answer any question you have. He cares greatly for/is generous toward students who put in the work to finish the course.
Bateman is the definition of the perfect lecturer. Fluent, articulate, understands calculus like it's elementary arithmetics. His lectures are loaded but arranged in a very logic sequence. He's a tough grader. WORK and give HOURS outside class. Solve EVERY PROBLEM ON WORKSHEETS and from the book - otherwise you won't pass. He's worth it.
Mr. Bateman is a great professor. He did a great job teaching the differential aspect of calculus, however when were introduced to Integral calculus, his lectures were lacking in clarity and connectivity. Definitely forces you to learn how to study and work hard. Otherwise, a very understandable professor. Truly cares about his students.
Mr. Bateman is an amazing lecturer. I took his 7 AM class (Fall 2016) and would gladly get up in the morning to attend his lectures. The only problem students may have with him is that he is exam heavy- his tests are HARD and the only way to get points in the course. Take him if you like math and want a challenge- if you hate math look elsewhere.
Good Lecturer, no doubt. HOWEVER, horrible tests. Class grade depends on tests, no quiz. He has no study guide so it's a guessing game when it comes to the tests. You have no idea if the class notes def. (which has to be memorized word for word) is going be on the test, or handout questions, or hw questions, it's like a big guessing game. DONT TAKE
Scroll down and look at all the difficulty rating, even if he has a good overall rating it's almost all rated at 5 for difficult. He takes pride in having less than 10 students at the end of every semester. So if you take him prepare to drop. I had A's in every maths class leading up to this class and I am going to have to drop. Good lecturer tho
Tests are strictly lecture based. You dont get the material? Too bad because youtube and tutoring cant help you on his tests. His tests are tailored around his lecture, and guess what? He gives you examples in class that are way more simpler than the test questions. He is proud that only 9 students stayed till the end? Trust me DON'T DO IT.
He is very tough! Get ready to work for your grade! Exams based on 3 things: lectures, handouts, and homework. He is very generous at the end. He cares about his students and always encourages them to ask questions. "If it doesn't make sense, sayyyy something!" He only wants students that want to be in the class to learn.
Professor Bateman is very easy and I passed the class by A+. Take it and you do not will not regret
Very good lecturer and explains concepts very well, but tests are very difficult. Friendly and willing to help if you are stuck though. Homework doesn't need to be turned in, but do it ALL or you will have a hard time with the tests.
Mr. Bateman was a funny, chill type of dude. His class was pretty straight forward, he offers extra credit towards the final. He sometimes offers study sessions the week of the test ATTEND THEM. I attended one and aced the test. Definitely need to study hard to do well. Class was full the beginning of the semester and ended with about 10 students.
I wouldn't recommend him during short semester. I'm dedicated and would review before class and go to the tutoring center and class and ask questions. It was a lot of material and you are graded only on test. Test are much harder than what he lectures. His handouts are so difficult tutors are confused. I'm sure he's a great teacher for math "art".
Professor Bateman is the best teacher I ever had. His teaching skills are excellent, he explains everything clearly, and actually teaches you how to think-not "bonehead algebra/calculus" that you just plug in numbers. Homework is challenging, but if you finish the homework you will do good on exams. "BE A QUALITY STUDENT, NOT QUANTITY STUDENT."
Handouts, lecture notes, and book problems. Study them hard, study them often, and ask any and all questions you encounter. Professor Bateman will answer them thoroughly and readily. This class is not an easy A, it's not even an easy C. But, having passed it, I walked away learning more about math in 16 weeks than I learned in all of high school.
Prof Bateman gives amazing and focused lectures, however, he goes by everything pretty quickly. You can ask him questions during lectures and he will gladly re-explain them to you. Overall, I think he is a great professor and i would definitely take him again.
Hard at times, but he teaches well. Great professor
He is a great teacher; However, make sure that you are giving it your 100% from day one. He explains the subjects very well, and make sure you are attentive because he does expect you to have a full grasp of the subject. questions on test will be harder than worksheet/book. go over each example in the book for different ways to solve the problems.
I took him during the summer which was a mistake considering how fast paced he was. He gives good lectures, but there is no way you will pass without doing the homework. He bases his lectures heavily on proofs, so you better be able to understand or ask for help. He's a funny guy which makes class a lot easier. Most difficult class I've ever had.
Good professor, but VERY hard class to pass. Grade is solely reliant on exams, that of which are very difficult. Would take over shorter semesters such as winter or summer instead of longer semesters. Very good at teaching material, however humor can be offensive. If you are not good at studying on your own or ignoring offensive jokes, do not take.
What you put in is what you get out.
Professor Bateman is a god. I was in the Air Force from 2014-2018, his class was the first math class I had taken in years. In his class I literally learned all 12 years of HS math in one class. Is he difficult? Hell ya he is, but put in the effort and youll be fine. Do his study guides and youll do great. Hardest B Ive ever gotten
Hardest teacher ever. He is a good teacher, and really knows his stuff, but your grade is only based on four test, and they are impossibly hard. It's hard to even get a passing grade. If you care about your sanity, and your gpa, avoid! 40 ppl register each semester and no joke at the end there are 6 left, who r barely even passing.
professor bateman is super nice don't get me wrong, but his class was so hard. your grade is based off of four exams. super old school doesn't let you use calculators. goes through material very fast, but will slow down for you sometimes. if you're good at mental math take him, if you're not don't.
Professor Bateman is not easy. Filters out garbage students by week 6. Work hard, go to office hours, form study groups, basically do what needs to be done there no doubt youll pass. Very genuine professor, cares about his students and goes the extra mile to make sure youre ready. Hes pretty funny and recognizes your hard work. I learned so much!
Great professor very tough but brilliant taking his class is like being on survivor.
Professor Bateman knows how to explain math really well. If you want to pass this class, you will have to put in the extra work. It took office hours, tutoring, reading the book lessons, doing all the homework, completing each weekly packet, and studying A LOT in order to pass this class. The less impacted your schedule is, the better.
Pay attention in class and do hw, you will get an A. Most of the test questions are from the handouts and the textbook.
He is an amazing teacher no doubt. The test are based on the text book and handout. I think I could have gotten an easy B if tried from day 1. Just do the homework and handouts and you will be good. Do remember to come to his lectures
Bateman literally told the whole class the first day that the majority of the class usually drops out of the class before the end of the semester. The first few days I was seriously lost and I definitely would have failed. This class is very teamwork-heavy, and you definitely need a study buddy. But you could pass with a serious amount of hard wor
The class is very difficult due to exams, it is manageable if you put in the work necessary for passing; explains material very well; always makes sure to clarify if anyone has questions. On class sessions before the day of a test, he will have optional review days. GO TO THESE. I aced the test whenever I went to these. Didn't do so well otherwise
Professor Bateman is a GOOD teacher. Many students think otherwise because he expects so much of you. But he is right about only the serious students passing, you absolutely cannot fake it in his class. Your grade is based off of tests and the homework helps you a little bit, but you will have to study like you never did before. Good luck! :)
Prof Bateman explains math 190 good but at the same time his tests are completely different to what he lets us know. A thing that made me switch profs is that he doesn't allow calculators... but he is "difficult" and I would recommend to take him if you have a good background of calculus.
is super uncaring punishes tardiness tho he is tardy alot you virtually teach urself Covid19 he is not still understanding, still does not accept late work, even though if youre like me you have problems converting ur exam it into a pdf. He has so many mandatory rules for submitting your exam&makes test cutshort as a result.
He is ridcioulous. I am taking his class online and he says one hour is good enough but I swear I spend 10+ hours. HE DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MATH AND CANT TEACH. Don't take it you guys will regret it, take my word
This is probably the worst math professor I have ever taken in my whole life. The homework he gives is not even related to the exams. The class average is 33% which is very horrible. It shows how much of a bad professor he is but with all due respect. Think twice before having him as your professor.
Nice guy, great personality but omg this class is impossible. I can't tell u how hard this was. Good luck
Literally the worst professor ive ever had. his videos are not helpful, no zoom or office hours, doesnt help when you ask for help. most people in the class dropped out or are probably failing in the class. just horrible. do not take.
Professor Bateman was very helpful when I was using Pronto. He answered all of my questions and was even on at 1:00am, lol. The tests are hard but he is very lenient towards the end. Definitely take him if you want to really understand math 190!
Took him for summer Stats Math150. Easy exams.
I LOVED this class. I am not a fan of any form of calculus, but I had a great time in this one! Bateman is a great teacher. He explains everything very well, and if you have a question, he answers very quickly. I had the hardest time with matrices but after we had a quick meeting, I understood it perfectly!
Doesn't provide tons of homework. Lectures are well explained. Test and quizzes are worth the most part of your grade. does care and try to help students that are struggling. However very strict and serious.
I took his class during the winter semester. Everything is online, and there is no live class. The work is easy if you just keep up with his lessons.
Bateman has been my favorite math teacher so far. His lectures are short and concise but explain the material well. He doesn't make the lessons confusing or hard to understand, they are really direct and to the point. There are 3 lectures every week 10-30 minutes long for each, then homework assignments corresponding. Only 4 tests and no quizzes.
Im not a math person, so learning math online was very tough. Professor Bateman uploads his lectures and assign homework due every week. You can access him for extra help though it would be like making an appointment. When he grades there is no feedback and tests are not too long (15 ?s some having a,b,c parts). He uses pronto to communicate.
This professor grades very aggressively and is VERY nit picky. You need to really do the most. I have no idea why he is so strict with his grading, everything needs to be perfect in order to get any credit. IMO lectures are not thorough at all !!!!! The only thing reasonable with this prof is the homework, since it is due every week.
Professor Bateman is SO picky and specific on what he wants and what he's looking for. You can get the right answer on an exam, but if you don't do it his way, then he'll mark points off. Lectures are all asynchronous, and he'll help you if you just ask questions on the pronto chat. If anything, you'll get credit on the homework for completion.
He explains problems well in lectures and doesn't give too much homework. Always there if you need extra problems. SUPER PICKY ON TESTS, hard A because there's only 4 exams and will MARK YOU OFF ON EVERYTHING, even if answer is right with work because you didn't do it exactly his way, makes exams extremely difficult to get As and Bs.
He does have only four exams. He does have hard tests and he does mark points off if the answer is wrong. But he does so to prepare you for the next class going forward. Although it may not seem it, he cares and wants you to succeed in his class and the classes after.
Prof Bateman does a great job teaching the material in his lectures and he's always available for help. However, it is difficult to get a high grade in his class. He is super nit picky when it comes to grading and this is a problem when your grade is dependent on 4 exams. Take him if you want to be prepared for future math, not an easy A.
Bateman began our first class by telling us that only 20% of us would end up passing, which is a red-flag. Poor lectures, poorly structured class. The class is based solely on tests, so if you mess up you're done for. There are better math180 professors at El Camino, I took it with someone else and got a B.
A good class and is very helpful in Pronto.
Well, I'll give it to this guy for his rather short lectures and not assigning so much homework. But OMG, he is sssooooooooooo piccckkyyyyy. I hate this school, wished I actually went straight to a UC and took my debt.
Good course. Exams a bit challenging but very helpful in Pronto.
I would recommend this professor for anyone trying to take Math 190. A text book is required for the homework assignments, heads up its quite a lot. The class is test heavy about 5 exams, which are worth the majority of your grade. Besides that the class was fairly simple and overall a chill professor.
Some of the students were part of a study group and we still struggled to pass the class. I don't believe the professor checks the assignments for accuracy but when it comes to the exam, he is very harsh. If you look for the Success and Course completion Report, you can see the stats of grades and see it's very difficult to get an A.
This teacher is very strict, as he leaves a lot of homework and his tests are difficult, too, and he is very specific. If the test is dirty, out of order or even if you don't use his method to solve the operation, he takes away points. Besides, he is not very kind to those who do not speak English as a first language.
This is an asynchronous course. All exams are open book/notes. Exams are a bit challenging. Just make sure you follow his directions.
If you are like me and prefer Professors who go in-depth with their lectures and shows multiple example problems going step by step then don't take this professor He only made his lecture at most 25 mins long and skips sections as if it was your job to review that, However, if you are not like me than he might be a good choice. good luck to you
Good instructor. Available at anytime to answer questions.
Good professor. He is available in Pronto if you need help. His exams are a little difficult so just do all the homework, handouts and ask questions.
For summer math 190 takers, prepare to go above and beyond the minimum load. He gives simple video lectures and textbook problems and expects you to turn that into a deep understanding within the two weeks between tests. The texts are very difficult, and you need to put in a lot of time in order to succeed. Class is based entirely on you
Bateman's lectures leave a lot to be desired, but he is probably the best Calculus professor you can take at El Camino. He is by far the best because the rest are just terrible, Bateman is by no means good at teaching unless you understand book definitions and like to figure out everything on your own after being given the most basic examples.
cool course. As long as you are self-motivated and will work hard you will be fine. Go to office hours.
If you are very very self motivated and enjoy learning material on your own this class for you. If you want a professor that will actually teach the material on the test look away. Test are nothing like the lecture videos. Very very picky grader.
professor available for office hours and e-mail and will challenge you don't take if your not self-motivated
You basically have to teach yourself the material. The lectures were really short 20-30 min videos, but only went over 2-3 examples which didn't really help. There were 3 tests + final, with about 12/13 problems but they are the hardest out of the whole lesson and isn't gone over in his lectures. Prof seems like a nice guy. Def go to office hours!
If you looking for an easy grade, take another class. If you want to be a real college student this class is for you.
ask questions during office hours.
Do not take this class online unless you are Albert Einstein and have a vast knowledge of calculus lol. textbook, lectures, and handouts look nothing like the tests
Pretty easy semester.
Tough tough exams but a good professor, gives you fundimentals but asks you to put it together and solve questions using them.
He is a very tough grader. Don't take him if you know nothing about Calculus, Pre-Calc, Trig, or Algebra. Tests are hard, lots of homework problems. Teaches very fast. Be prepared to learn lots on your own.
not bad at all. Do the required homework and ask lot of questions. cool guy!
I took him for 170 and 190 and got A's for both classes. Tests are challenging but fair (make sure to do the homework, handout, and stay in class until the end of every class because he usually gives practice problems that may show up on exams). Be a good student and you will get rewards for it!
Amazing teacher, would highly recommend. This teacher is not for people who expect to get easy grades, they need to be earned. I almost had a C in the course until the final exam, which raise it to B. The most important thing is that you also need to study on your own especially in harder classes. Be prepared for the real deal.
do the work and any handouts. always ask questions. pretty cool.
I wish he taught 191. You can tell he puts lots of effort into preparing lectures (including examples and practice problems in class). I took another prof for 191, he went all over the place and was unorganized, and instead of using class time for practice problems, he made you go to "office hour" which doesn't fit your schedule at all.
please please please dont take him online. he uploads 30 min lecture videos that are nothing related to the hw he assigns. the hw he assigns are textbook questions and thats it. the exams are tough he grades tough
Just do your homework and always ask questions. He is super helpful when you have questions . Go to office hours!
pretty easy professor. problems just like textbook. very helpful in office hours.
pretty chill guy. do your homework and always ask questions. exams are based off of lecture notes and book.
very good instructor. very helpful with questions. study book, notes and any handouts.
Professor Bateman is always open to answering any questions during lecture and office hours. He encourages it because he cares about his students success in his class. His exams are tough so if you don't naturally understand calculus, just know you just need to do extra studying.
The tests can be VERY challenging. The homework assigned is NOT enough if you want to pass. Do extra practice and challenge yourself, even if it means taking an hour on one problem. You will thank yourself on test day. Grading on tests is very very particular. Challenging but fair and helpful professor overall.
I appreciate his grading scale: daily low stakes quizzes, graded effort on classwork, & lowest exam grade replaced by final. No surprises on exams. Exceptional theoretical & conceptual explanations. Although he quickly moves through lecture, his notes are always clear. He has some thoughtful respected opinions on higher education. Fast grader too!
Excellent professor, definitely recommend. It's extremely easy to fall behind though so if you skip a homework assignment or lecture you need to put in extra hours outside of class. About 20-30 textbook problems a week + any worksheets but make sure to ask questions about theory-oriented topics (word problems, MVT, IVT, delta-epsilon). Good luck
If you arent some crazy math prodigy don't even bother trying with this guy. The only thing you get credit for in this class are the four exams you take, thats it. The beginning of the semester started with 35 students and ended with 10, he claims "this happens every semester" to him yet claims its our fault??? AVOID HIM
Professor Bateman is the best math teacher I have even had in my life. BUT, his tests are extremely hard. He will answer questions and make sure his students understand the material, as well as running class very informally and always being supportive. However, the questions on the test always feel more like puzzles than math problems.
Extremely unforgiving when it comes to late assignments (Grades are based on exams so one missed assignment HURTS). Lectures are the bare minimum when it comes to material for the exam, outside research/learning is necessary. He's not accessible outside of class. Overall very passive aggressive. Exam questions are HARD & nothing like the homework.
Overall good professor. Do the homework and then some Go to zoom office hours.
DO NOT take Bateman's online classes!!! This was easily the hardest math class I have ever taken. The tests are VERY hard and nothing like homework questions/lecture examples (moreso based on theory then the mathematical process). His office hour times are at 8am, strict no late work policy, and tough grader. Only take if you enjoy being depressed!
Do your homework and always ask questions. It will get you ready for 191.
I took Bateman back in Winter 2023. I thought he was great, I enjoyed his lectures and how he organized his class. Basically Half the class is lecture and the end is practice problems on the board, but you can do it on paper if you're not comfortable. He'll come around do a quick grading and give hints. Also only grade is Exams. Overall Bateman gr8
Professor Bateman's class is not easy, but it's worth the effort. Stay on top of the homework, use the free textbook, and supplement your learning with resources like unstuck AI. The tests are challenging, but he's a fair grader who cares about student success.
Math 120 is itself an easy class and Professor Bateman maintains that easiness. The lectures are helpful, not too much homework and for a summer session class it was well paced. The only negative thing I would say about Mr. Bateman is how strict he is with deadlines, if you miss an exam or homework assignment their is never make ups.
He genuinely does not want you to get an A in the class. He grades so randomly and will mark off as many points as possible on the exams for no reason. You can do every homework assignment and understand it, watch every video lecture and still he will create the most random, not related exam problem. Please avoid taking him!
I definitely would not recommend this class. His exams are nothing like the homework and he grades so randomly. I compared my responses with other people and we would get the same thing, but only one of us would get points marked off. He prides himself on making the class hard and literally doesn't want people to pass.
I took this professor in-person. He is very helpful during class activity sessions.
His exams are nothing like the homework assigned and he accepts no late work for any exceptions. I took it online but found out that his online is way worse than his in-person classes. I took AP Calculus in high school and barely passed (and this class had the exact same material then) I struggled heavily. Would not recommend for an essay A.
His exams are HARD, but he's a great guy and want's you to learn. If you want to do good you need to understand what you're doing on a very conceptual level. Once you get it it's easy. If you want an easy A this isn't your guy, if you want a dedicated scholar who cares that you learn and will make sure you learn, he's your guy.
Up there with the hardest classes I've ever had. Mr.Bateman is nice enough, but If you do not have a solid foundation of the fundamentals of Algebra and Trig, you will have an EXTREMELY hard time. Very little homework and grades come almost entirely from the 4 tests in the semester. 0 late work allowed. If you want an easy A DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Great professor. Really helpful in-person.
Professor Bateman is a great professor, but very rigorous. He wants to make sure that you understand the math that is going on. Do not take his class if you just want an easy pass.
Cool professor for calc 1
pretty cool professor. Do your homework and stay for all class activities and you will do fine.
Do the book work and stay for activities. He is helpful when asked.
Take him for Calculus! You won't regret it.
I took this professor for 170 in the fall and 190 in the spring. Exams are tough but if you study every day, do every single homework problem and ask questions then you will be prepared for them and you will be prepared for future math courses. Take in person, do not take online.
Most ratings here are positive but I believe it's in the middle. It is good if you have a somewhat confident standing on pre calculus but if not DO NOT add this class. The exams resemble bits and pieces of his homework or quizzes but not entirely. The quizzes do resemble the hw mostly. He is an old school professor to sum him up.
Do not take this class, has very strict rules which ends up confusing you. Would take off points for almost ANYTHING. Has a weird testing format that never works. Make sure to watch all his lectures or it would backfireeee. DO NOT TAKE.
Awesome professor, he is a funny dude and really helpful if you stay after lectures are done. Lectures are amazing as he explains concepts well and the proofs behind them. The quizzes are fairly easy, and problems are taken straight from the textbook. His exams however are challenging, but definitely doable if you study and practice enough.
TIP: Don't take this course unless you've tried the placement test! Even if you meet the prerequisites, you can still struggle. Start the HW immediately and try to be 1 week ahead since class is fast-paced. Exam questions are usually harder than what's given on HW. Lectures explain concepts well, but not the steps to actually solve problems.
No attendance! Show up to class to take role call/attend weekly tests/take the exams and just leave immediately. You don't have to sit through lecture if you already understand calculus or intend to self-study (I use Professor Leonard's youtube lectures, easier to understand) I wish he provided a study guide or practice exams but oh well.
In a math class, he cares more about handwriting than correctness. All of his rules in the syllabus just paints him as lazy and he wants to do the least work possible.
Do all handouts and book problems. Very helpful during class activities.
Just trust me for your sake do not take this class.
Great overall teacher goes very in-depth with every concept and topic. Office hours are a pain as his are 6-8 in the morning Monday and Wednesday, Assigns homework from textbook but doesn't collect homework. Big issue is your grade is based off of only exam scores, no quizzes, homework, or participation grades.
stay with him during class activities. He is helpful. Homework assigned but not collected. Do the homework!
This professor is really great at grading, as scores are posted on the same day they are taken. He is very clear in his lectures. He is never late and has an outstanding attitude. He is strict about no technology, including calculators, during lectures and exams, but the problems do not require any.
