easy going class.
Tough class, a lot of work. Wants you to write for yourself (and not him), so can sometimes be vague on what the assignment needs to be like. However, very hlpful. His door is always open, and really does want to you to succeed.
This was an awesome class. Though the material was rather difficult, I can't lie here, and the analysis sometimes frustrating, I can honestly say that I took a lot out of his class. He was always prepared and willing to help. Kept in constant email contact with every student and desperately wanted success in every person...
Yes, his door is always open but he never has any helpful advice. He's very unclear and keeps his grading so subjective he can pick favorites and grade by personality. He is way to personal during class, sharing stories about marriage proposal rejections and the like. The reading all about quantity and terrible quality. I didn't learn anything.
I honestly enjoyed this class, Bell's personal touch made it alot less boring than other droning lectures, he makes an honest effort to connect with his students and is invested in our success.Be willing to push yourself and not sit on your ass.
This guy rocks! A lot of writing but, hey, it's a WRITING class.Wants every student to be a better writer, but use their own ideas, interpretations of texts.Classes are fun, engaging & he chooses great texts. He's extremely helpful to ALL students; encourages to rewrite anything for a better grade. And I'm not an English major. I took it as a GUR.
I'm an english major and was excited to take his class. I had heard good things from this website, none of which I found true. He's a terrible teacher with no opinions and no teaching technique. Your grade wil fluxuate depending on his personal feelings toward you. I don't reccommend him at all.
My new favorite college professor. He must work in excess of 60 hours per week. He puts so much work into his class. I had to buy 6 different books, but they were all great. I'm not selling them back. Always there for students. More work than my other two classes combined, but I learned a lot more too. Lets you rewrite to get a better grade.

Despite what others say, this wonderful man changed my life! He made me the best writer I could possibly be. You all will forever be in debt to Michael! Take his class; you will never regret it. Favorite and most life changing professor by far! His personal style is the best! Be prepared to work hard to get the most out of the class!
I would recommend his class. I found it to be enjoyable and interesting. He really pushes you to be a better reader and a better writer. He doesn't want ****. He is a very kooky guy, but you learn to enjoy it.
He was absolutely my favorite professor at WWU so far. He's so helpful and even though it was the most frustrating writing class I have ever taken I am a better writer for it. He helped me find my voice and I recommend this class to everyone.
Awesome professor, really wants his students to become better writers. An A in the class is completely possible with hard work, you can rewrite papers as many times as you want for a better grade!
It's amazing how passionate this man is about English. Because he loves it, he takes an immense amount of time helping his students excel. The class is very work intensive, and he wants quality work, not BS. This is not an easy course, but if you are struggling in any way, he will never give up on you.
Michael puts so much work and time into this class that he basically lives in his office. This is a difficult class but if you're willing to work hard, you can learn so much from him. He's kind of an odd guy but he makes class fun.
Way too much work. In a ten week course, had to read 5 novels and write 11 essays, and most (if not all) the essays are expected to be completely rewritten at least once. Isn't clear about what he wants you to do, and seems to intentionally select books with graphic language and a lot of sex to offend people. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Michael is devoted to his students passing his class. He has a lot of reading, a lot of writing, but all of it is geared toward your desire to pass his class. If you want an A, he makes it so all of your papers can be rewritten until you get the grade you want. He lets you express your creativity in everything you write. He's Super helpful!
Favorite prof! If you're interested in becoming a better writer, you can't do better than Michael's class. He challenged me big-time, but I emerged far more prepared for my upper level ENG courses. Also, a nice, laidback, very personable guy, lets you re-write for a better grade. Passionate about his students. Can't recommend him highly enough.
Surprised by the comment saying we wrote 11 essays in 10 weeks, and that Michael intentionally chose books to offend people. We had casual writing assignments weekly, different than our 2 ESSAYS. Michael was very sensitive toward students' views and communicated that his intent wasn't to offend. Great class, unless you're not there to learn.
Take a light course load with this class, or you'll get burned out. Intense work load. Michael is nonpareil for his insights and boyish oddness. Be prepared to loath/be fascinated by him in turns. If you need practice writing, this is it. Personally, I came in a strong writer, and came out changing my major & vowing never to take another Eng class.
Endless work, often several assignments at a time, subjective grading, hard work will not always get you an A or B. Casual students: Avoid! GURs can be completed with MUCH less work. He's definitely an interesting guy, but his teaching depends hugely on whether he “likes” the class. Worshipps favorite students, held grudges and was rude to others.
there are a freaking lot of assignments, and you have to re-do most of them. he tends to teach very liberal contemporary books and will aggressively push his agenda. the class discussions are usually fun and interesting, lots of tangents. lots of small group time, creates a good community. but this class took up all my time.
TEH WIN
Women and gaming was a strange class because we mentioned women maybe twice the entire quarter. It was clear he hadn't planned the class well. If you don't agree with what he has to say,he dismisses you as wrong. Plays favorites. Assignments were never clear to anyone. Tons of tough reading that we never discussed but were expected to understand.
I've never seen someone play favorites so shamelessly. You basically had to change your name to get any attention or at least not snapped at. The horrible work load was bad enough, but his behavior was inappropriate for an instructor and it was clear he simply shouldn't be teaching.
I had Michael last quarter, and while I came out of the class seething at how much work I had to do for the grade (and at how many times I had to re-do it), I realize in retrospect that i learned a lot. It's a tough class for sure, and it might take a toll on you, but it's cool to have made it through, and he's a cool guy to know after the fact.
3.92 GPA - I am a good, conscientious student. He is the most unprofessional, demanding, abusive, deluded teacher ever. He wants growth as a writer, but if you don't have the right constitution to suffer through his abuse, you will just give up. HALF of the students in this class dropped and for good reason. If you can avoid taking him, do.
Michael will make you work, that is the truth. Though no more than any other professor who actually wants to TEACH you their subject. But meet with him and you will do well, he WILL improve your writing, even if your grade isn't as perfect as you would like. IF YOU FEEL LIKE LEARNING SOMETHING, take his class. If not there are other GURs for you.
This was not the class that I signed up for. He has since lied to us about several things, called students out in a public forum, and caused others to literally run from class. As much as, if not more than 50% of the two classes dropped. He said 30 minutes of reading a night, but for the required comprehension it turned into 1-2 hours.
Textbooks were a bit tough to get through, but he adjusted the class to try to help with that. Sometimes his description of the work can be a bit vague, but he allows students to rewrite their paper for a better grade! I went to his office a bunch of times, and he showed me what I needed to do to improve my work for a good grade. Nice guy! :)
This course really has made me think about my status as an English major. Honestly, classes given this much freedom need to be audited from outside the department. His expectations were that of a 400 level seminar but with a 200 level designation. The textbooks were insightful but a bit dated and we did not touch on 'women gaming'.
Only 6 students out of 25 dropped the class, hardly half. I loved this class and came out a better writer. Only two real "essays" and several informal, fun pieces. Lots of reading, not an "easy A"; but if you want to learn and be a better writer, this is for you.
It seems like most people either love him or hate him, and with a good reason: he is consistently inconsistent. He can be fair or unfair, easy or demanding, extremely kind or terribly rude, knowledgeable or thick-headed, understanding or dismissive. He has made me laugh my head off, and also reduced me to tears. The readings ARE great, though.
Michael was the best professor I have ever had at WWU. He is extremely helpful, engaging, and interested in what his students have to say. I am appalled by some of the responses on here. Michael was always eager to help students who were struggling; and when I needed an extension on my paper, he gave it to me. I wish he taught more classes!!
He is generally nice and a great person but as a teacher he is awful. He becomes engaged with students and encourages fun in class but his directions are incomprehensible and he has a tendency to become frustrated or condescending when you do not catch on to his style which is at times the toal opposite of generally accepted good writing practice.
Micheal Bell is a nice person, but when it comes to teaching he is not good. Very few students are able to understand what he wants, and tends to talk in circles. I learned nothing from this class and gained a lot of stress. Favors students in class
Michael was a nice guy but pretty difficult as a teacher. He really pushes his students to become better readers and writers, however, the way he goes about it is sometimes a bit off-putting. He seems to be quite moody so be sure to catch him when he's in a good mood or you wont get a very good reaction. His class was A LOT of work so be prepared.
michael is quite hard but i owe a lot to him. by the end of the class i can honestly say i think in a different way...which is good. he is the best prof. ive had so far and i truely believe he is what a professor should be. PS i got an A in his class...just start working and stop complaining and youll do fine
Michael is the worst. He assigns too many assignments, to the point where it stops becoming engaging, and starts becoming busy work. He also demands that you revise them, so you end up having to do them over and over. Also, he claims to encourage thinking outside the box, but what he means is he wants you to say what he is thinking.Definitely avoid
DO NOT -- I repeat -- DO NOT take this class. Especially if you're doing it for a GUR -- it just isn't worth it. He plays favorites, and no matter how much time I put into essays, I always got back the same grade expecting a revision. Has been my worst class of my college life -- I can't count how many hours I've spent in a computer lab rewriting.
I didn't think this class wasTHAT hard. people are making it seem like it was impossible. I'm not the type of person to really go all out on assignments or spend TONS of time studying/reading but honestly im doing fine in the class. its def manageable. michael is a nice guy that just wants to push his students. convos are kind of circular though
I don't know why everyone is dogging on Michael! Taking his class was the most beneficial/productive thing I could have done to become a better writer and student. Sure, it was by far the HARDEST class I've taken at WWU, but it was well worth it. He lets you revise all of your assignments for higher grades. I've never seen him play favorites.
Michael is hands down the absolute best teacher I've had at Western. Seeing these reviews is upsetting, because they are completely false. Yes, he's hard. Get over your laziness as a student and you'll do fine. Yes, it is so much fun, and so it he. As a senior in the department, I have to say I made it here because of this class.
Michael Bell is the second coming of Jesus Christ!
michael bell was the most amazing prof I've ever had. He took us shooting, made us read amazing books, build forts around campus, all sorts of insanity. He demanded we do our best and that really makes people mad. Some of you aren't english majors and will hate this class. anyone who likes books and writing will love it. <3 michael bell.
I've never worked harder in any class and gotten such a low grade. By the way, I was NOT a lazy student, i worked very hard, but no matter what i did, i couldnt please him. I rewrote all of my essays except for one and still didnt improve in his eyes. I also went to his office hours, he gave very contradicting instructions. Shouldnt be teaching
It's so obvious this guy *really* cares about his teaching and about his students. Totally recommend taking a class from him. It's also important to go TALK to him when you're frustrated or confused. The people here who have been complaining are the same people who just sit silently in class. :(
Worst class of my life!! I am an English minor and I love English classes...except for this one. I worked my ass off, went to his office, rewrote everything I could and still didn't get the grade I wanted. I was so pissed and stressed out the entire quarter. I hated every moment I spent in that classroom.
I dropped his class despite that it is causing huge problems pursuing my major. i still think its the best decision ive made. he gives you no direction and is way into his own personal views.
Passing his class is totally doable but incredibly stressful and time-consuming. His grading system is pretty arbitrary & as others have said he obviously has some idea about what he wants that he doesnt communicate well. Getting good grades is guess work. The books were cool, but the structure was horrible & he is wildly moody.
Do not take this class! I needed this class as a GUR and have been regretting signing up for it every day since. Grades are arbitrary and the class certainly seems to favor English majors. I can't believe he made an English 202 class so difficult when he knows anybody can take the class. On a personal level he is very nice but not worth the stress.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS MAN :(
Brilliant... Class was a challenge but the man is a genius and really changed the way I write (for the better).
Michael is a great teacher. Yes, the class is hard, but worth it. He will let you revise anything, and really wants to help you write better. I learned so much, and had lots of fun. We even played croquet one day. If you put forth the effort, the class will be very rewarding.
Bell is the most inspirational teacher I have ever had. I worked harder in his class than I have in any other, and it was entirely worth it. His lectures stretch beyond the classroom and into life. Half the class had dropped out by the end of the quarter, but if you can hack it, Bell's classes can actually truly affect your life. Amazing professor.
nobody comes out of his class a crummy writer. it's not possible. you WILL fail if you're not bringing your a-game. when i run into other "survivors" the complaints are similar. we see people in our 300-level courses that can't write. it's a pity wwu can't use him for quality control in the department. we have some real hacks at the upper-level.
As a first quarter freshman, this class set me up for taking college classes, but his teaching of writing was the complete opposite of what eng 101 asks of you. Ok teacher, flexible office hours, go to them! and class every day
Amazing teacher. Must be willing to learn and work hard for grade. Office hours are highly encouraged and helpful, not to mention fun.
DO NOT take this class UNLESS you are willing to put in the work (there's a lot of it). NOT AND EASY A. It is a hard class but Michael is super helpful and lets you redo assignments for a better grade. If you love reading and writing then you'll like it. If you're no english hater but you're not super passionate about english, it will be harder.
Imagine signing up for a math class, and the entire class being about the statistics of makeup sales. It's bizarre how much he inserts his own interests. But he's super helpful and enthusiastic!
i recommend him to everyone! kinda hyper but he picks amazing books and leads great discussions. probably will take him again. make sure you do the reading and think about things on a level deeper then the surface. you'll get a lot from the class.
bell is hilarious and very smart. he made me into a better writer, that's for damn sure. great dude.
Bell is an important teacher, he runs his class in a creative and democratic way, taught me to look at books in great new way and the world by extension. A great experience and made me want to change my major to English. Take classes from this man!!!
Hope I can take another class with him, really interesting and untraditional books choices
Mike is a great guy. He's really helpful if you have questions and seems to really care about his classes. He led interesting discussions that were challenging but still felt easy to participate in. I wish he would grade a little faster, but really I have no complaints. He does give good and thoughtful feedback on the papers so it balances out.
really great class and interesting guy
I took this class upon recommendation by another professor yet didn't find the class as engaging as I thought it would be. Michael sets up the class as a huge group project but gives no clear instructions. He doesn't explain anything and I'm not sure I've learned anything from this class. No textbook, no lectures, no real guidance, nothing learned.
He is a great teacher but be prepared his expectations are high and he is a tough grader. That being said he gives unlimited rewrites and gives out his phone number so you can get ahold of him at any time. 5 essays/projects, 4-6 quizzes, a portfolio, and an in-class presentation based on 5 books.
Michael teaches this class focusing on board games and the design behind them. Overall I had a great time in this class but it required a lot of work and time outside of class meeting with group members.
Super engaging discussion based class, you get what you put in. He assigns interesting current novels and doesn't want any of the symbolic bs. It's connecting to the world. The class can be boring if you don't do the reading and don't care. But if you apply yourself, you can have fun and learn a lot.
Michael was a professor I really, really liked. He was engaging, brought up good class discussions and chose interesting books. That being said, he does make you work for your grade. You need to show up to class, read the books he gives you and really take the time writing the essays. He gives really good feedback in his office hours too.
Michael makes you work for your grade, and with that work he makes you a concise and better writer. He is a down-to-earth professor and despite being a tough grader, he is really caring and wants you to succeed in his class. If you are willing to put the effort in or you are considering majoring in English, I strongly recommend 202 with him.
Michael only teaches books he hadn't read so he can 'discover them' along with us. He was super unorganized and most of our discussions weren't even about the books but stuff he found on google. His grading criteria is confusing. Even in office hours he couldn't articulate what I should have done differently. Allows revision which is nice.
I took Michael for a WP3 technical writing credit course. He is a nice guy but if I had known the entire quarter would be centered around a huge group project and his own personal interest in board games I would have waited to take it with another professor.
I can't believe this guy has positive reviews. I rarely rate professors but my goodness I disliked his class so much I had to write this. All we did was watch him play video games, & then we watched some cartoons and were assigned papers I never had a clue how they were related to class, & if they weren't perfectly to his liking he would fail you.
Michael is a nice guy. But, THIS IS A GRAPHIC DESIGN COURSE, NOT a writing class. It was experimental and it showed. Grading criteria was really confusing/left up for interpretation, but he had very clear expectations, which made the assignments frustrating and difficult to accomplish accurately. He does allow infinite project revisions tho.
I had Michael for technical writing, which ended up being a document design class more than a writing class. It taught me a lot of design principals but he is very particular and will tear student work to pieces in front of the class so just be prepared for that. He allows endless revisions. Overall I felt like I got a lot out of the class.
This class was terrible. If you are a hard working student I would highly recommend staying away from this class. Due to the group project format and no attendance is kept those who show up are punished with bad group members. It just creates an overall infuriating experience that is topped with hard grading and for me, a lack of actual learning.
Micheal cares greatly about his students, however basing this post off, the fact that I took an english class, I will say I learned very little about actual literature. He spends most of class talking about random things he found on the internet, is an extremely hard grader, however allows endless revisions. Expect reading assigned every night.
He assigns writing that doesnt really have a clear prompt and grades pretty tough. He will read students work in front of the class and criticize it if he doesnt like it. Class felt like a waste of time sometimes because he gets sidetracked a lot. Not a mean guy and not the worst professor but i did not really enjoy his class.
Michael is a cool guy. But he does not use Canvas, so your grade is a mystery for the whole quarter. You do about 5-6 projects, and that is it. You have three free absences, and then after that, your grade depends on how well your tasks are. He also helps a lot when you are confused.
I took this class to learn technical writing, but it ended up being a document design class. Michael is nice but he constantly criticizes students' work in front of the whole class. You do 5-6 projects and get your grade at the end of the quarter. He also does not use Canvas. He does allow endless revisions on work which is nice.
DONT take this class. He treats it like a 400 level. The only way I got an A was by devoting 15-20 hrs a week to this class and sacrificing my mental health. Can attest to him just spending all of class randomly googling stuff and "reading with us", comes up with assignments on the spot. Didn't learn anything. Rubrics make no sense. Not worth it
Taken him for Eng 202 because it's listed as a GUR, but homie treats it like everyone's an English major, the instructions he gives for essays are unclear and up to his interpretations, he expects you to turn in your work even if you're on you deathbed, honestly don't waste your time with him if you're not gonna pursue the major.
A tough class for sure, the books were a good read tho and he always gives chances to redo papers for a better grade. This class for sure takes up a LOT of time and the classes don't super revolve around writing but rather book discussion. Definitely a creative class that requires lots of effort
The most stressful class I've taken in my 2 years at WWU. HOWEVER - if you want to learn media analysis, like REALLY learn how to understand the significance of what you consume, this is it. Hard as hell, but I came away with interpretation & writing skills like you wouldn't believe. Pick another GUR, but if you like this topic, GO FOR IT.
Bad experience so far. He called the entire class ignorant for not being as interested in the news quizzes and for not passing the new quizzes as he expects. This is English 100 intro to college writing not a media class. I will not be taking class from him again. He basically spends the first 40/50 mins of the class just going off about the news.
Michael is the definition of a tough but fair professor. His expecations are very clear, and he is very easy to reach. The reading is heavy but manageable and he has a unique sense of wit and humor and selects very interesting reads that stick with you. Very knowledgeable about a wide variety of things
(201:Writing pop music) Genuinely looked forward to class. It super chills if you in class and participating and doesn't give that much work, it's pretty much discussion/in-class based (do not skip this class). Michael is so chill and def knows what he's talking about. 10/10 experience. Lets you revise everything
Professor Bell is a pretty average professor. My only complaint is, on written assignments he doesn't give the best feedback, but he's willing to explain his feedback more if you ask. Other than though you can always improve your grade by resubmitting assignments. After understanding Professor Bell's standards, I would take his classes again.
ENG 101 with Michael was a fair class. Expectations were handed out on the syllabus the first day, which was useful. Ask him about revisions and he will explain deeper, he truly wants you to succeed. My favorite part of this class was being able to not only receive feedback from my prof but also my classmates.
Took this for GUR credit I do not recommend this class to my worst enemy Despite tryin my best idk if Im even goin to pass anymore, he gives minimal feedback, attendance is required but has little to do w/assignments. its clear he is very passionate, but being this stuck up for a 200 level GUR class is insane. too bad im limited to 350 characters
Attendance mandatory, lectures about nothing important. Terrible feedback, rubric is hard to understand. You have to be a passionate, motivated, skilled writer to achieve a good grade. The grading scale is dumb, no letter grades, & you won't know your grade until the quarter is over. Clearly prefers a specific type of writing. Hates Taylor swift...
At the start of this course I felt similar to the other reviews, but as it came to the end I realized I really learned a lot and became a better writer. Michael is looking for specific stuff in your writing and if it's not there you won't get a good grade, but you can do revisions. You will have to reflect on 2 albums per week so be prepared
Bell is great! The course challenged me and elevated my skills in researching, citing, and analyzing. His lectures were captivating and insightful, and talking about music and culture is always a fun time. If you follow the rubric, you'll pass very easily, and Michael provides thoughtful feedback and allows corrections for papers. Loved this class!
Projects in this class are not graded normally, but by Bell's own custom grading scale. They are graded as "in progress," "effective," and "strong." To get an A in the class, you need to get 4 strongs. That doesn't sound so bad, right? Well it turns out he is an extremely hard grader, and there are only 5 assignments in the whole quarter. Awful.
I thought this was going to be a class about public speaking or something, but it ended up being a document design class. The teacher expects his version of perfection on every assignment in order to get an A. Take a different GUR, this class is useless and stressful.
DESPITE MY HIGH RATING, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN'T WRITE 20 PAGES ABOUT A GAME YOU MADE UP ENTIRELY BY YOURSELF. Now that that's out of the way, I had a lot of fun making a game in this class, and learned a lot about effective and communicative writing. I was only hampered by unmotivated group partners, never by the assignments. Very cool!
Whether or not you appreciated his class, or him as a professor in general, it is almost 100% agreed upon that his course is very difficult. If you are someone who stresses about grades, you may want to consider another professor who grades before the end of the quarter and gives clear expectations on his assignments rather than personal preference
This class broke me and my friends on several occasions. Grading is very harsh and is not explained. He is a very interesting and cool person but this class is very difficult for a 202. He has his own grading system and you don't know your actual grade until the end. Very tedious projects and he takes pride in how difficult he makes this course.
People seem to think his grading is unfair and hard to follow but he literally outlines the requirements for an A in his class. While he does not post the grades until literally the end of the quarter it is super easy to follow along with where your grade is. You are able to do assignments as many times as you'd like to receive the grade you want.
Despite his mixed reviews, I would say he was a very good teacher! He was very engaging and passionate about what he was teaching. His grading is a little odd but you can revise everything! Overall would take again
Has an unclear grading system that expects you to basically reinvent the wheel just to get an A. I took this class because I thought it would be about how to actually write a technical document..this is basically a graphic design class. He's not easy to reach and I didn't have good interactions with him. If you need help? Forget it. Literally avoid
Professor Bell's ENG202 class is challenging but rewarding. The workload is heavy, but using unstuck ai alongside the free textbook can really help. Attend classes and engage with the material - the effort pays off.
Had to take this class as a GUR, wouldn't recommend anyone sit in a small crammed classroom with this professor. Lectures often went to incredibly inappropriate topics, in which a lot of women felt uncomfortable in the class. Not to mention copious amounts of work that is hard to manage with other classes and/or a job.
He says in the beginning that in order to get an A, you will have to thoroughly impress him and go above and beyond. Grading is confusing & strictly on paper as he "doesn't believe in canvas", you will have no idea where you are at in the class til the end. Every project is also group based, there is no feedback, you'll always be lost.
I did NOT like this professor at all. The concept of the class was cool, but he made it miserable. He did not believe we had lives outside of this class and thought we could not meet his standards. He was a very tough grader and had obvious class favorites. He also shared too much personal information which made the whole class uncomfortable.
This is not a technical writing class, rather a class on graphic design and juxtaposition. Don't expect to write much of anything. The design projects have high expectations and the workload is intense outside of the classroom. Expects to be amazed and blown away in order to deserve an A, and generally is in a poor mood and makes rude remarks often
Michael is one of my favorite professors I've taken. This is technical design class not really an English class. If you want an A you need to earn it. The class is not hard but expect to put in the effort and passion into each project. Michael is a great guy to talk to and the class overall is fun, working hard on the projects feels rewarding.
It's confusing to know where you stand grading wise. He is heavy on student lead. Basically, if you want help, you should be seeking him, and he shouldn't have to come around always asking. He is easy to speak with regarding grades. Overall, the class was good, I just don't like design at all and that's basically what the class is.
I took michael's (history of pop music), I genuinely loved that class so much, I basically got to do homework in ranting about my favorite musicians of all eras and genres. His grading technique is confusing and I was lost in what I was earning through assignments but the class is easy and fun, he is very talkative of his own artists as well!!
Dont recommend this class for women who have self respect. If you prefer classes where the professor doesn't berate every single one of his students, avoid. Regularly makes inappropriate comments on female students regarding their looks, and intellectuality. Random grading, insufferable lectures about how he hates teaching specific students.
Lectures have NOTHING to do with hw or readings. Millions of papers and assignments all due at once. Super unclear grading, doesn't use canvas so don't even know what grade will be. Constantly trauma dumps. Feedback on papers is unclear. DOES NOT TEACH WHAT HE GRADES YOU ON. Doesn't explain HOW to do what he asks for on papers, or in revisions.
Very rude. Speaks down to all students, even the ones who worship him. Grades really hard, and very unclearly. Does not lecture on actual skills related to writing but rather innapropriate topics and his own trauma. SOO many papers due at once towards finals week. Insane workload for just one class. RUDE and makes you go to office hours = uncomfy.
Did not like. Doesn't explain stuff well, regularly compared everyone to everyone else, feedback unhelpful and vague, most of lecture time was spent talking about politics or his personal life.
Do not take this class. Only good thing abt this class was when I got to LEAVE. Professor is a particular grader with strict guidelines but doesn't really give u instructions. Read 5 books with barely any time to write essays on each + revisions constantly. Got laughed at and judged by professor for work/questions
Doesn't teach anything. Expects you to just know what to do with little feedback or instruction. Tough grader but just gives you the result and no additional notes on what you could fix. Made me very angry with the grading model he applied (again with no helpful feedback).
I was excited to look through the list of books we'd be reading during this course, and found them all very interesting. I quickly found out our essays are confusing, have weird rules and specifications, and that we get zero peer feedback. HIS feedback is confusing and unspecific-- and is handed back on paper. Grades aren't on canvas. Good luck.
You won't know your grade until you're done with the class, and get ready to have weird due dates with even weirder grading. Interesting guy, has a lot to say about a number of topics, but often off-topic from the class and confusing expectations. Kind of intimidating. I would say you can get through it if you give your all but I wish you luck.
