Has good intentions but doesn't teach at all, he reviews topics but never actually introduces them or teaches them. If you're taking him get ready to teach yourself the entire course.
Smart, nice guy who obviously good intentions but just summarizes topics & just assumes you know how to do everything; never actually teaches anything relevant to help you understand/ complete the homework. As someone who would say math is their hardest subject, I wouldn't recommend him--so far have been trying to teach myself the entire course.
LOL this rating DOES NOT surprise me. To give context, I've taken Calculus 2 and Math 1071Q. I found those classes to be easier than this one given the way this guy does lectures. They make 0 sense, he does little to no explaining, and makes the EASIEST things complicated. I would recommend taking a different professor, or not taking the class.
He has helped me out tremendously when I approach him during office hours. Even as I get up to leave, he is always eager to continue teaching me. If you are serious about learning MATHEMATICAL ECONOMICS then go to his office hours. I have learned more APPLIED math with him during his hours than I did previously my whole life.
Mike's a great teacher. Always ready to answer questions even in a 200+ person lecture. Wish I could have him again next semester.
Professor Biro is committed to his students' success. He is was available every single week for office hours and was extremely helpful. I met with him twice a week for the whole semester and I don't think I would have passed this course with anybody else. He gives plenty of opportunities to get a decent grade as well.
I needed to teach myself most things and seek out help from friends because he is definitely not the best at teaching. He has his moments with a good explanation, however he breezes through topics. He does answer questions and tries to help. Don't bother buying the book either for his class. Never even touched it, just get the online access codes.
Please don't take his class, horrible instructor ever. He gave you the examples but never explain these clear, as same as the above said. And the most hilarious thing is, he doesn't use the university's grade column, which means if he wants to give you a F that even you have a B or A showed on huskyct, you will still receive a F anyway.
Prof. Biro seems like a really nice guy who definitely shows that he cares about his students and wants them to succeed in the course. His lectures can be confusing and he can get off topic and lose focus of the material. The quiz questions in discussion are simple and easy but when you get to the exams they are substantially more difficult.
Prof. Biro did a fine job. Not the best, but still was a great lecturer. Easily accessible outside of class. Grade is based on 3 Test and discussion (lots of quizzes). Lots of homework too. I've heard a lot of people complain about the class but if you honestly put the work in you will be fine. Biro is a solid choice for 1070Q.
Prof. Biro mostly teaches by doing example probs on a powerpoint during lecture. You will need to be in class in order to answer i-clicker questions for participation credit. Most of your grade comes from 3 tests that are very similar to the practice exams he gives. If you actively do your hw and keep up with discussion quizzes, you'll do fine.
If you take his online 1070Q class: it is doable but you will receive little to no help from him. Tas are not much help either. Best bet for a good grade is to teach yourself the material and then go to q center or ask friends when you get stuck. that being said exams are fair just start reviewing early.
Michael Biro does not do anything for the Math 1070Q course, he simply has his TA's go do his dirty work and they are little to no help at all.
I took the online course and the only thing Biro did was make the exam. Another person gave the lectures, a website gave the quizzes, the practice exams were from the textbook. His exams are not similar at all to the quizzes/hw and are unnecessarily hard. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. I'm not bad at math & this was the hardest math class I've ever taken.
Professor Biro is absolutely FANTASTIC! I took him for MATH 2360 (geometry) last semester and was so excited to have him again. He is extremely knowledgeable and can answer any question with ease. His enthusiasm makes the lectures fun. He is extremely helpful and answers emails quickly. Only wish I could take him again!
Easily one of the most difficult and plain awful professors I have had. Does not teach the material (no, literally, he doesn't even give the video lectures). Has TA's do all the work. Unhelpful in discussion and overall indifferent towards teaching. You will learn this class material yourself and likely not see him once.
Would not recommend. I learned more from teaching myself out of the textbook than I did in lecture. His lectures are very conceptual and he doesn't do a lot of example problems.
Prof. Biro's exam style is 6 questions, choose 5 to be submitted for a grade. His practice exam is very similar to the actual exam, which helps for studying. Usually 5 out of the 6 questions are computational based and the last one is conceptual based. He writes alot of information on the board and it is very easy to zone out. He gives weekly HW
Been reading a lot of negative comments but MATH 1070Q online has been really easy. Maybe because of a curriculum change, but minimal effort will result in atleast an A-. Definitely take this class ASAP.
Super helpful and patient. You get the impression he put a lot of work into his lectures and preparation.
Great professor. speaks very clearly and explains concepts very well. Always asks if there are any questions and always makes himself available to help students. Sometimes he skips steps but you just have to ask him to go through them. Exams are pretty straightforward, if you practice the examples he goes over in class you will be fine.
Michael Biro was the professor for this class. Given that it was an online class and he didn't make any of the videos I only saw the dude once during an exam. He does post on the question forum though so I give him a 3. The video lectures made by Amit Savkar who is hilarious but he dosen't cover everything so read the book if u want an A!
Amazing teacher and always willing to give help. Went to his office hours multiple times and he always was there to help me through my homework and review with me for an upcoming test. Not that much stuff graded, really test focused. Always stops after he does some work to explain it if anyone is confused. 10/10 would want him again.
Generally, after reading all of the bad reviews, I expected this class to be one of my hardest. I found that with minimal studying and reviewing past homework, the exams were not too bad, plus he offers extra credit if you submit your homework 24 hours before the due date. I didn't touch the book once and still got an A.
His lectures are just 2-3 videos you watch online, then online homework and Piazza each week. I never saw him and it was a heavily independent class. 3 exams, multiple choice, not always easy, but there's extra credit for doing hw early. Never needed the textbook.
Really good math class to take if you want to have a lot of free time and get an easy A. About 2 1-hour lectures and 2 30-minute assignments each week followed by 2 midterms (1 in October and 1 in November). Since it is an online class I found myself with a lot of free time since it is a relatively easier course and even easier with a friend.
Online class was incredibly easy. Often didn't have to watch the lecture videos to do the WebAssign homework due each Friday. Didn't spend much time on the course at all - even if you watch the full lectures they are probably 1.5 hours in total plus an hour or so of homework each week (and that's an overestimation). Professor was nice & accessible
Class is online, not really too much challenging work, don't really have to watch the lecture videos too much, Q center is a good place to visit to get help with homework, be sure to participate in the Piazza discussion board also good place to get help. Be sure you study before exams as his practice exams tend to be different. Possible A/B grade
This class is online so he uploads video lectures. He is probably the most boring teacher I have ever had and does not explain things very well. Would not take him if you do not have to.
Not the best teacher, he doesn't expand on concepts well enough and it's difficult to understand concepts through lectures. The HW is weekly and not very applicable. The tests are easy, but he's good at responding to emails and not too difficult to get a hold of. But try the Q center before you try to have him explain anything
If you have to do this class online, RUN AWAY, this class is a must for in person. The practice exams only help for about 2-4 questions for the actual exam. He will intentionally switch up the exam format from the practice exam so there is no real way to practice for his exams. I highly recommend everyone to stay away from this teacher.
Usually two sections of the textbook per week. If you complete the homework assignments early and get a 100 on the practice exam, there is extra credit.
Biro was very helpful and the material was clearly laid out and easy to follow without any further instruction. The office hours were great as well, he explains very clearly in a way thats easy to understand.
Biro is easy to contact. You can go to office hours or Piazza and your questions will always be answered. The only downside is that his lectures are very boring and do not correlate with the homework or test. You are better off watching videos online or looking at online examples to teach yourself than watching his lectures because they're useles.
Loved this class. Lectures are pre-recorded & straight to the point. Watch 2, copy everything down and do the corresponding assignments each week at your leisure. Practice exams are similar to exams and exams are open note/book. Multiple submissions for HW & PEs. Lots of chances for extra credit. About 1.5-3.5hrs/week, easy A, and I learned a lot.
Professor Biro is great, he is always available to help and hosts office hours daily. He offers tons of extra credit and the homework isn't too bad at all. Piazza was very helpful, could post questions any time of the day and always got an answer within minutes. The exams are a bit tricky as expected.
I really enjoyed this class - prof Biro gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit through both homework and practice exams. His lectures are very to-the-point and the worked examples within them really help with doing the assignments. The discussion forum the class utilizes is also a lifesaver. Overall, Prof Biro is a solid choice.
Professor Biro lectures were straight to the point and easy to understand. All the homework had extra credit and the practices exam also gave you extra credit. the textbook is not needed for this class but you still need to buy it in order to do your homework. tests were a little harder because it is online and there is no partial credit.
super nice professor and stays engaged. lots of material to work with online and no surprises on tests. lots of prep and lots of extra credit opportunities
fine class, there was no synchronous meeting time, but he posted lectures, chapters, and hw each week to do. make sure you do well on the exams/hw because the final had a lot of curveballs and questions that were just different enough to be something we didn't cover. he does give a lot of opportunity for extra credit, definitely take advantage of it
Professor Biro is really great. So many extra credit opportunities, I ended up with over 100% in the class. Lectures are very clear and helps you understand the material. Class is asynchronous, about 2 30ish minute videos per week to watch along with relatively easy homework. 5 tests, 1 final. He's a very caring person, I would highly recommend.
Math1070Q was my favorite class this semester. I actually enjoyed learning the material even though the lectures are quite dry. The exams are a little challenging, but very doable if you watch the lectures and do the hw. The practice exams are pretty similar to the real ones. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities and I ended with above 100%
The video lectures were pretty terrible. Does offer extra credit if you submit homework early.
Class is completely asynchronous, weekly hw with a test every 2 weeks. tests are easy if you watch his lecture videos, except tests are only ten questions fill in the blank no partial credit. Lockdown browser calculator is annoying and if u make calculator error there is no partial credit. overall good course though.
The final exam was pretty impossible. It was worth 25% of grade and cumulative, which really put a dent in my grade. First two exams were the hardest, the second two were easy and straightforward, and the second to last was very hard. He does give extra credit for homework, but it doesn't really change your grade much. Exams were also on Lockdown.
Okay, so he's a good person and will respond to your emails and help you if necessary. However, the tests are usually 10 questions with NO PARTIAL CREDIT. I would be knowledgeable of a test and still receive a 70 due to some very slight errors. I was a bit lazy at times, but the tests were very unfair imo.
The lectures were horrendous and the final exam was the worst exam I had the semester. It did NOT correlate to what we learned. Despite this, Biro is a decent person and responds quickly to emails. DO NOT only study the practice tests to pass.
not recommed
I had him for Multivariable Calc and Differential equations. I really enjoyed him for Multivariable however not so much for DE this is only because of the online format. Michael Biro explains his material very well and his practice exams are a good review of the actual exam however when taking the class online you have to put a lot more effort in.
Difficult class/material but if you read the textbook/do the hw you'll do just fine. Textbook is easy to read and better than the notes from class. Tests are difficult but open note. The practice tests are a GREAT study tool. Weekly homework, biweekly tests. I suggest having a TI84 + taking a stats class first. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Taking Diff Eq online (Spring 2021). Definitely pay attention to the practice exams; they represent the actual exams. Prof. Biro is really good at explaining tough concepts and answers CampusWire questions promptly. He's passionate about the subject, and it shows. Midterms and final make up 80% of grade Highly recommend him for upper level math!
I took this class online and I thought it was relatively easy. The lectures are boring but usually not too long, and there are 5 exams and a cumulative final. The exams are almost identical to the practice exams, and they were open note but on respondus monitor.
I took this class online. The lectures are boring but he posts the slides so you can just go through the slides instead of watching the lectures. The exams are very similar to the practice exams and you get extra credit if you finish homework well ahead of the deadline. I could've ended up with an A but I didn't study for the final.
The worst professor in the state of Connecticut. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Hardest class I've ever taken. My GPA plummeted from a 3.6 to 2.4 from this one class. Exams are very lengthy with long questions and doesn't give you enough time. Ive ran out of time during multiple exams and so has my peers. Would not recommend this professor. Do whatever you can to get a different professor.
I've never had lectures this dry before. There's nothing more dissatisfying in education than a teacher who isn't fiercely passionate about what they are teaching and it's painfully obvious that Michael Biro doesn't jump at every opportunity to explain each and every point. I don't feel like he's in tune with the student perspective.
Dislike: Dry lecture. Always end up having to teach myself half of the material. Says the tests will be just like the practice exams not true for half of most recent exam. Makes you sign up for office hours instead of answering simple questions via email. Like: Extra credit for early homework and extra 5 points for a 100 on the practice quiz.
He just makes everything unnecessarily difficult.
Explanations in video lectures are very unclear and is not very helpful through email. Would not recommend.
1070Q is an interesting class. I know many of my peers have a difficult time with the tests but I do not find them that hard. Watching his video lectures are a must, but I have never read the textbook. They may be boring but take as detailed notes as possible because tests are open note and online. Make a study group, it helped me a lot.
took MATH 1070Q online during my freshman year, his asynchronous lectures were very hard to follow and some concepts were not explained thoroughly. my biggest issue was the weight of the exams, if you do bad on those you will not get a good grade. there were only usually 10-15 questions which made it hard to succeed. does not offer extra credit.
Is not very considerate or respectful. Asked for an extension on a homework-- did not get one. I have never had a professor who doesn't like about their students. Complained that too many people were getting help for his class at the library, but didnt think that maybe because his notes are the worst notes Ive ever had to deal with.
Professor Biro is a good choice for 1070Q. All the lectures are pre recorded, and you have homework due at the end of the week. Recommend doing them earlier so you get 25% extra credit. 5 exams over the course, and one final. First 2 are difficult, but #3 and #4 are very easy. #5 is one of the most difficult. Available for office hours.
Horrible professor and horrible class. I have always been good at math but for some reason, I barely even passed. I studied so hard, did all the homework but failed 3 out of 5 the exams. He gives extra credit if you do the homework early and if you get a 100 on the practice exams but there is no other help. The lectures were so boring.
Professor Biro is the worst teacher I have ever had. He posts pre-recorded lectures that he recycles each year. He does a horrible job of explaining concepts and overly complicates things. His is exams are even worse. He will purposely throw in 1-2 questions that are impossible to get right just to throw off the average. TA's do all his dirty work
This class is the reason I'm planning on transferring out of the business school. The lectures were incredibly long and dull (at least when taking notes) and very unhelpful for the test. Exams are 10 questions each and weighed very heavily. No partial credit or extra credit on exams unless you do a practice exam. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Biro makes his exams purposely unwinnable. His lectures are beyond dry and taking notes on them won't even help you on the exams. I've studied homework, study guides, and even the textbook, but on the exam he will purposely throw in a few questions that are extremely difficult. No amount of studying can prepare you.
No matter how much studying you do, or how good of notes you take there will always be a couple questions on his exams that are impossible to answer. On top of that the class structure is terribly ordered. The week before the final exam, Professor Biro decided to assign 3 more sections for us to study. Terrible professor. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Biro is the most dry and lifeless professor I have ever had. I remember the week before finals, he assigned us 3 extra sections, and made the final cumulative on top of that. We simply didn't have enough time to learn the new material and review for the final. Be ready to learn on your own since he can't teach.
Homework is very easy and tests are 90% of your grade, but his review exams are essentially what will be on the test. Very big on theory so his lectures can be confusing but doing the practice exams make the exams relatively easy.
He's a great guy, and I give him credit, but I do not think online teaching is his thing. Just very tedious to listen to two 20 minute pre-recorded lectures every week and not have good in person help. Overall difficult to understand and if you don't take notes you're basically screwed.
Biro is the worst, life-less professor I've ever encountered at UConn. He doesn't even grade HW or Exams. He has pre-recorded lectures for this online course, webassign and blackboard grades your homework and tests/quizzes so he doesn't do anything. Everything is on Chegg so don't even waste your time watching his videos.
Michael Biro does the absolute bare minimum. He shows up to office hours twice a week, but other than that, good luck trying to get help. The class is online and his lectures are pre-recorded and recycled each semester. It is quite impossible to get help in person because the TA's are terrible at explaining concepts. Terrible professor.
It physically upsets me why this man even has a job at the university. His lectures are pre-recorded, his grading is done entirely by the computer, and he doesn't even show up to office hours sometimes. If you want help outside of class good luck. His TA's are even worse. Michael Biro is a lazy excuse for a professor and is an absolute joke. AVOID.
Worst class I've taken this semester. Exams are nothing like practice exams, and he doesn't curve your grade. Extra credit for doing hw early and getting a 100 on a practice exam is nice, but that's about it. Lectures are pre recorded and are extremely dry, and the information is poorly explained.
Easily the most difficult math course I have ever taken. Just when I think that I have something figured out I end up getting 60s to 70s (at best) on the exams, not to mention bombing the final. The extra credit given for doing homework early probably saved me from failing. Absolute joke.
If you are reading this, do not take his class. Do yourself a favor and do not waste your time like I did. He is a terrible professor and this class is an absolute joke. Sure if you are good at math you will do fine. But the exams are totally different from the practice exams.
I wish I would've read reviews prior to taking this course. Professor Biro doesn't really do anything? All HW is graded by the computer, same with chapter tests and finals. He's more accessible via e-mail than in person for office hours. Tests are not curved. And don't waste your time with extra credit for HW or practice tests.
Out of my 4 years of being at the University of Connecticut. Michael Biro was the WORST professor that I've ever had. If you are trying to fulfill a requirement for a Q course, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. HE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS STUDENTS. HIS PRACTICES EXAM ARE NOTHING LIKE THE REAL EXAMS. I've put 100% effort in this class and he still failed me.
Professor Biro is a great choice for Differential equations, he is more than happy to clarify anything you have trouble with and makes the course easy to succeed in. Class is 90% test graded but nothing to be afraid of as he does a great job to prepare you. Biro is without a doubt one of the safest options for 2410 professors
He was a great teacher! I ended the course with a 95. He gives LOTS of extra credit. He gives extra credit on HW and exams. Without the extra credit, I would've gotten a 87, and I didn't even do all of the extra credit! He is very clear in his weekly videos. There is weekly HW. If you complain, he listens and actually takes in what you're saying!
Professor Biro is an average professor, but a caring person who responds quickly to emails. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities! The exams are very similar to the practice exam except for the exam before the final and the final. This class is alright, the people complaining in the comments are unaware that it could be much worse!
Personally I found the class easy, but it's basically self taught so that's probably why. Lectures aren't that helpful (I know he way overcomplicated basic systems of equations by using matrices). 25% extra credit on HW was huge, 10 question exams were not. If you took Calc/AP Stat/Algebra 2 in HS you'll breeze, if not maybe find another professor.
This professor is lazy, he literally does not have a job. The entire class is graded by the computer, he recycles his lecture videos every single semester and there are always questions on the homework that are not gone over in the lecture so you have to suffer. Every single exam has questions that have never been well taught to the students.
If you fall back, youre done.
Don't buy the $100 book unless it comes with access to the homework. I never used it. Practice exams are rlly similar to actual exams idk why ppl are saying its not... USE Q CENTER AND CAMPUSWIRE!! Final is a joke. There isn't nearly enough time to complete it. Especially with the echelon form chapter as well as the chapters that require graphing.
This guy blows. His lectures are so outdated, and when you do the HW assignments theyre nothing like what is taught in the lectures. He does give a lot of opportunity for extra credit, but this guy does not teach you jack sh*t. This is a self taught-class. Get ready to spend a lot of time guessing/getting extra help for this.
He is the worst professor I have ever had contact with. I am not sure why he still has a job in education, even if it's kindergarteners. Please fire this man.
Professor Biro is amazing. His lectures were easy to understand. He broke down step by step what you needed to do. He was always accessible. He gives extra credit with Practice quizzes and homework. The material isn't easy, you need to put the work in! But if you do, you learn a lot! Would recommend
Take MATH 2410Q with him. He is clear when teaching, happy to do additional examples, and responds to feedback from the class. The tests make up the majority of the grade, but he is fair with grading and if the class average is lower than about 75, he will either curve or allow you to correct the test for credit.
Amazing professor, give a lot of extra credit for homework and practice tests.
Professor Biro made this class great. His lectures are super clear and include tons of examples to ensure that the content is clear. He teaches the entire lecture without any slides or books, a refreshing change from reading slides in every other class. Exams make up a large portion of the class grade but are nearly identical to the practice exam.
The way tests are waited so heavy is what really brings this class down for me and the way the practice test questions compared to the test questions line up. The homeworks are pretty annoying but you get 25% extra credit just for finishing them 24 hours early so there's that.
Awful professor. Tests are graded through a website that doesn't take kindly to rounding errors, and only accepts answers in a specific format. (no partial credit, of course) Biro was hardly at office hours, and his lessons were pre-recorded. I studied so hard for the final and literally got a 38. Totally ruined my grade.
dont take his class, he gives practice tests but they are legit not even close to real tests. Hes makes sure to give you worst examples on test, tests were open note but there is nothing in notebook that is remotely close to test. Studied for final got 95 in the pratice test and got 50 in the final. way to hard for gen 1 3 credit class.
I have loved this professor!! You can do well in the class IF you put in the work. Watch the lectures, do the homeworks, read the textbook, ask questions in campuswire, attend online office hours. Take full advantage of the extra credit! The final was the hardest thing in this class. Put in the work, you will be good!
Let me just start off by saying math should never be taken online. The practices tests are nothing like whats on the exams. All the lectures are pre-recorded from years ago, if you don't have to take this class don't.
Class overall required time but was easy to understand and get a good grade. Gave extra credit for practice exams and homework. If you took algebra 2 in highschool this should be easy. Can get away skipping around the lectures or listening to them while doing HW.
The lectures are useless because the exams are nothing like we went over. He often changes due times so if you got used to a certain time then too bad. The exams are fill ins and if you don't round properly you automatically get it wrong. He doesn't give back the correct answers so you have no way of knowing what you did wrong. Avoid this Professor
Michael Biro's class is graded based on 80% exams, but they're about as easy as you could ask them to be. He releases practice exams that are basically copies of the actual ones so doing those are enough to prepare. His lectures are also really helpful and he's always checking to make sure students are understanding his process as he goes.
As poor as Professor Biro's rating are, I genuinely didn't think this class was too hard. Lectures are prerecorded, homework/exams are online, and there's many ways to ask questions and clarify things. As long as you take good notes, do the extra credit, and do practice problems, you should have no problem.
There is a lot of extra credit available in this class! If you do your homework 24 hours before the due date, you get an extra 25% credit. This means that if you do this for every homework, you get an extra something like 3% on your final grade. This along with the extra credit from practice tests gives you a lot of wiggle room with your exams.
I don't know Michael too well because this was an online class, but I thought his lectures contained great explanations with a LOT of examples for them. He has a discussion board where he is available for questions about homework and he is decent at giving guiding answers. In my opinion easy class and extra credit is available on every homework.
Five tests that are 10 questions each open ended and worth 12.5% of your grade so it was awful almost everyone was struggling and the math center would be packed the final was an astounding 15 questions worth wayy to much of your final grade. DONT DO IT
IS an online class, which you need to learn everything by yourself. if you taking this class... GOOD LUCK if you have chance not take it, just run!
Biro is the most useless professor I've ever witnessed fire him. Probably the most tedious and useless math I've done Calc 1 is probably easier to grasp. It also doesn't help Biro's lecture videos are recycled from past semesters, and hw questions are completely different than the examples he gives in lecture. Have fun trying to teach yourself.
I'm currently taking this math course right now. Biro does give lots of extra credit for homework and before exams, but you will end up spending hours and hours trying to teach yourself. His video lectures are not the same as the homework sometimes and it can be really frustrating. Khan academy teaches this course better than he does.
Biro was awful man, I took 1070Q online, I literally learn everything by myself. The exam he gave us is totally difference from what we learn, the questions are stupidly weird... RUN, don't take it.
Im not sure what this man is being paid for because it certainly isn't teaching. Let me start off by saying, you will without a doubt be teaching yourself this entire course. The exams are completely different than the homework and practice exams, and are made WAY harder. This class makes me extremely depressed. AVOID.
If you take this class and you're not good at math then pray. You will need to go to the office hours and the Q center is great too. Tests are like once a month based on four lectures and four homework assignments. His practice tests are a god-send, if you do it to 100 you will get an extra 5 points on the tests.
hated the structure of this class but as long as you stay on top of exams and extra credit and homework, youll be fine
LOL, he grades the tests wrong sometimes. And if you email him regarding wrong grades, he will avoid answering your questions. Dude is a bot.
Lectures are not like the questions on HW.
Michaels's lectures are extremely outdated and he twists the variables into this own rather than sticking with the textbook ones which is extremely confusing when trying to reference back to the textbook for something you don't understand. He also is VERY vague in his answers to any questions you have. I wouldn't recommend this course to freshmen.
Lectures are past recordings he has been using for years. The examples he uses in the lectures are nothing like the homework questions given on WebAssign and the practice exams are NOTHING like the exam. Some of the questions on the exam I have never seen an exam of. I have an easier time understanding the material on khan academy than with him.
You really get out what you put into this class. If you watch all the lectures and take some notes you'll be fine, it really isn't that much work and the content itself is simple. Biro isn't super accessible but you should never really need to contact him. Don't take this class if you're not good at teaching yourself!
Couldn't find professor during office hours which is awful since this is a completely asynchronous class so if you don't understand the material, you're basically screwed. The practice exam for the final didn't reflect the level of difficulty on the final exam. Lecture videos were basically from the textbook so get ready to teach yourself.
Had no interaction with Biro for the entirety of the year outside of the occasional emails he would send out. This class was basically watching a Walmart Khan Academy and then doing the homework for it. Super easy class, but Biro was inaccessible and absent for the whole semester
Do you not take this class unless you really have to. His lectures are nothing like the homework you need chegg to teach you and the practice tests are nothing like the real tests.
Do not take this course unless you are motivated/able to learn the content on your own. The Webex meetings before tests are definitely useful, but besides that the professor is basically non-existent and all content is online. The content itself is not too difficult, but you will have to use extra resources to help you outside of what is provided.
He only writes on white boards so its so hard to follow along, and you can't miss class. He teachers the material like it is the simplest things in the world and it is always very unorganized, however he's really accessible outside of class. Also very few grades are put in only homework (which he grades really hard) and the 3 exams.
You are teaching yourself in this course. Homework is kind of similar to the lectures posted. Lots of extra credit opportunities. The practice exams are usually what you will see on the exam, except for the final which he made completely different. You have to put in a lot of effort to do well.
Did not update grades throughout the semester, only midterm and final grades so you are left wondering. Had practice tests for each test which were completely different from the actual tests, which had about 5 units per, and the video lectures were useless. Going to office hours or the Q center is a better use of time than watching them.
From what I heard about him last year, he has definitely improved as a professor. He gives extra credit practice exams and all the exams are open note. The final is hard, but the other exams are almost identical to their practice exams.
Professor Biro offered little to no helpful feedback when I looked for it. The lectures barely helped me complete the assigned homework each week, and the lectures were repetitive and mostly useless to me. The practice exams were a nice way to help prepare for exams, but the practice exam for the final is nothing like the actual final.
Without supplemental instruction, this class is extremely difficult. The lecture videos rarely include things that are done in the weekly assignments and the review sessions are not helpful at all. Thank god for Allison Grieve, the SI instructor, as she is an excellent instructor and saved me from failure. Insane how this class does not get changed
The Professor is very responsive to questions, attend his reviews too. But unfortunately way too many questions on exams are not on the practice tests, some not anywhere. Making you either rush through notes to find where you did this, or relearn it quickly. Extra credit for HW & Practice Tests are nice. But overall: exams are difficult.
Professor Biro is a very nice guy and is very accessible outside of class. Don't miss a lecture because most of the material can only be found in class. HW can be a little confusing but he will help you if you ask. Exams are very similar to practice exams, especially the final. He is a very fair professor and I would take him again.
5 regular exams and 1 final, test heavy but you can redeem yourself. Do the extra credit practice tests and extra credit early homework. Class is self paced and web-assigns are easy and not usually the same as the exam, so get them done as early as you can (like weeks ahead). Then rewatch lectures as refresher for test, they are very helpful.
Worst class I will ever take at uconn
Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the Q Center if you take this class. Biro is a very nice guy but his lectures are too confusing; he glosses over a lot of important info so you're left wondering how he got the answer he did. There are weekly review sessions with the TAs, if you are lost make sure you go to those or you will fall behind quick.
I took math 1070Q, just be ready to watch and take notes on the videos. There are 2 homework with lectures videos posted online that are due each Friday. There are exams every 2 weeks. This course really depends on how much work you put in. There are a lot of extra credit with homework. The practice exams are usually the same as the exams.
Respectfully, if you didn't get a good grade in this course you simply didn't turn things in. If you turn in homework 24 hours before the due date, you get 25% extra credit on the assignment. Online lectures were long, but it was totally worth it for open note exams.
Lectures were a bit boring due to heavily-conceptual, but guy was very fair and open to questions. Weekly homework and 3 exams only, no quizzes, and he gives practice exams that are almost like the real exam. Kinda my fault since i slacked a bit for his class, but with enough work put in I think his class is manageable
The lecture videos are around 50 mins weekly but definitely takes much longer than that to get through since you have to keep pausing to write notes and catch what he's saying. The examples he gives in lectures are nothing like his homework. He glosses over things extremely fast even in his review sessions. Don't underestimate this class!!
I would not take this professor again, he rushes through things too fast. The examples he gives during lectures are sometimes (very often) NOTHING like the ones on exams and practice tests. Be prepared to spend a good amount of your time on this class
I will have nightmares now that this class is over. Only reason i did decent was because of a tutor at Q center and a friend of mine. A part of my soul died in this class. Don't be fooled by the alluring title of asynchronous. I wish those who have to take this class all the best, because if you're a business student, there's no escaping.
I would not take this again just because of the exam style, there's 5 exams plus the final so 6 exams with 20 questions each worth 5 points. it shows only ONE question at a time and once you submit the answer to that one question YOU CAN'T GO BACK!!!
This class actually blows. 5 exams worth 60% total of your grade and a final that makes up 25% of your grade. The format of the tests are terrible: 2 hours for 20 questions but can't go back to review questions given one at a time. You also can't review what questions you got wrong on the exams so you can't even learn what you got wrong. Sucks
The good of this class is the extra points for doing HW early, but it doesnt help when the exams are 2 hours 20 questions cant go back and have barely any relation to the lectures or home work so you are scrambling trying to figure out how to do the problems. 85% of your grade is exams with 6 total so if you don't do well 1 or two you're screwed.
He made lecture videos for every week which could be watched on 2x speed for how long and slow they were at times, but if you don't understand something you can look at the lecture videos again. Tests were just like practice tests. If you've taken AP Statistics, this is similar with about half of the course. Could not meet with him though, only TAs
Tons of extra credit available. Exams are hard and worth a lot, but very similar to practice exams. Homeworks are not representative of exams, but are pretty easy. Deadlines schedule is consistent, so even though it is an online-asynchronous class, it is easy to fall into a routine. Professor is very understanding and accommodating.
This class was online so I can't really speak on how good of a professor he was, but the instructional videos did not help, I had my friends explain everything to me. I didn't go to any of the tutoring sessions offered so maybe those would help. Mr. Biro was also really bad at responding to emails which sucked since the class was online.
Took this over the winter so it had my undivided attention. Class moves fast so you need to go to a tutor or office hours. I went to most office hours so I picked up the material better. Some stuff is definitely more difficult, this is a class you have to remain on top of at all times. Test heavy but if you do the hw early you get extra credit
All I can say, do not take him. 60% of your grade is midterm exams and the 25% being the final, webassign being 15%. Extra credit for doing the hw early but barely helps. If you don't do well on any of the midterm exams, get ready to fail or retake the class. Take it with him at your own risk.
He is the worst professor I have ever taken. Took 18 credits this semester, got all A's except for this class. Was my only shot to get into the major I wanted but because of Biro, I need to retake the class for a better grade and delay a semester of applying to my intended major. Don't do it.
I literally have no words. Avoid him if you can.
absolute worst. only way i passed was the extra credit and q-center. does not help
Don't fall for this being asynchronous. Take 1070Q in person unless you already know the material. Questions are pretty clearly designed against AI being able to read them which I think is cool and should be in the future of academia, but it makes them so hard to read & comprehend!!! Review sessions suck too. Supposed to be 2hrs. End up being 30min
Worst math class I have ever taken. He was very unclear in his lectures and bad at explaining. I learned more in SI and Q center sessions than in his lectures. You also have to purchase a $100 textbook. If you don't NEED to taken this class do not.
I enjoyed the lectures and found them super helpful despite them being online. As long as watch the lectures, the work should be manageable, especially with help from other websites if you google how to do something.
As long as you watch the lecture and do your homework you'll do fine. Tests are two hours for twenty questions and is not on lockdown browser
This class requires consistent effort, but with the help of resources like unstuckstudy, study sessions, and the Q Center, you can definitely succeed. The lectures are dense, but the extra credit opportunities and open-note exams make up for it. Just stay on top of the work and you'll be fine.
The greatest to ever do it
This class is way harder than it needs to be. The lecture videos are unhelpful and the examples aren't even near the caliber of the actual problems on the exams. The exam format is also terrible. You can't backtrack nor see what you got wrong at the end to learn from it for the final exam. If you screw up on one exam you're screwed. Pass fail this.
(Fall 2023) Online course. Just had to pay attention to understand which goes without saying. Videos recording the material. Homework with multiple attempts for each question which was good. Wasn't a bad course.
Prof. Biro is very caring of his students, and will do his best to see them succeed. Be sure to ask questions in class if you do not understand a topic. Also, he is very accessible for office hours and through email. Two midterms and a cumulative final, worth 30% each. Exams are actually fair and very similar to provided practice exams
Vry good professor!!!!
The class is really easy and there are plenty of opportunities for extra credit. It was almost too easy and since its completely online asynchronous, you can sometimes forget to do some assignments. but overall really easy
This was by far one of the easiest classes I've ever taken. The weekly homework is around 5-10 questions and easy, extra credit for submitting it 24 hours early (you have a whole week to do it and if you want you can do it ahead of time too). If you took AP stat and know basic algebra and common sense this class is really easy. Read the book too.
Professor Biro's class was pretty straightforward and will probably cover material you already know if you've taken a pre-calc, statistics, or algebra class before. His lectures have a lot of examples, but can be kind of monotonous and seem unnecessarily long. The exam questions were basically identical to the practice exam questions.
Lecture is HEAVY in concept and theory - his work is all over the place and not to mention exams are 90% of grades.
You never meet him. His lectures are long and boring, not very clear and his handwriting lowkey sucks. Weekly homework but if you do it more than 24h before its due, you get extra credit. Exams were pretty easy but he just did not have the best teaching style to be a fully asynchronous professor.
Pretty easy class and I suck at math. Two HW assignments a week, and extra credit if you finish them before Friday. 6 open-note tests- not bad at all. His lectures are incredibly boring tho. Take this class if you're in need of another Q course.
The exams are 90% of the total grade. I don't think a single person in that entire class had an A. The class is hard to begin with, but between lectures, homework, and exams, I truly think it's a miracle I got a decent grade. Be very ready to rely on Youtube for the class.
All homeworks and exams were online no lockdown.
Class was difficult for no reason. Exams are 90% and HW is 10% of the grade. Lectures are very into theory and did not align with actual content that we would see on hw or tests. The only miracle that saved me was that the exams were nearly identical to practice exams. Study them to get a good grade! Still had to pass/fail the class to save my GPA.
Michael BIRO!!!!
I can't state enough about how unaccommodating he is. Course wasn't that difficult and should have ended with at least a B+, but a life circumstance fully out of my control forced me to have to miss one of the exams (which are worth basically everything) and despite emailing him, he gave zero leeway and brought down my grade by an insane amount.
Don't take this section of Differentialequations, other classes had exam averages 90 and easy time with exams. Michael made it difficult to do well on the exams. Theoretical questions that we never covered in class on exams. No others were required to do this and had exams with half the material as our class. Exams are all the credit for the class
Dr. Biro is fine. He's clearly very knowledgeable in calculus, but I had a difficult time with it. He kind of expected you to go in with experience in the subject already, and as someone who didn't take AP Calculus, I struggled. He does a lot of example problems in class but doesn't really explain exactly how to do the problems.
I actually really liked Biro; he really tries to make sure you understand, answers questions, and works through example problems in class. He's a great lecturer. The low rating is because the class depends heavily on your TA—bad TA = bad grade, good TA = basically give you answers. I recommend finding the best TA and switching to their discussion.
