Intimidating, but very helpful
Take it one day at a time; he will get you through it.
Dull boring professor. Just drags on.
Once you get to know him he is a great guy!

Never come to class late!!! He'll never let you forget it!!

His course is easy, but he's a very, very, very boring person. It is extremely difficult to sit through his tedious lectures.
Boring, no review for tests, covers a lot, lectures a lot
boring, but easy. if you can't stay awake in class, don't worry about it, everything that is on the test comes straight from the book. has an attendance policy, but is not very strict about it
I took his class in the summer and if it hadn't been for these little map test he gave us, I probably would have a D in there. If you take him in the summer make sure you don't have any other hard classes.
I'm sorry, I just didnt enjoy this class, the prof. is, as others say, quirky and can't understand that different people learn different ways.
Take notes on Political, Economic and Social views. Read the material. Test come directly from the readings. The final has an essay discussing the POL, ECO and SOC aspects of the question. Lectures are more commentary to the readings than useful material.
Tests are very predictable, if you read the text you will be fine. Don't waste your time taking notes in class, NOTHING from the tests comes from his lectures, just make sure you read.
I enjoyed his class. He certainly is strange, and kind of boring, but his class is easy. As long as you study his reviews you will do fine.
Lectures...boring...tests on key terms from outlines, high expectations, voice fluctuates during lectures...sometimes to mumbling. Not a hard class, just hard to sit through an hour of lectures....
very bad teacher
He is very boring. Letures two hours straight. Very confusing and I did not learn anything. I did not enjoy his class.
Was very throurough in lectures. Tho, he is not understanding when it comes to students who have different learning or test taking habits. If you like the subject matter his personal travel experiences enhanced lectures. No guesswork involved for tests.
I skimmed my text and showed up to class and got a B. He's a very moody man who often likes to **** and moan. There are better teachers if you have options (Searles aka Cowboy Mike). Bishku's extremely boring, but hes also not the end of the world.
Has a thick, overbearing liberal bias and likes to blame things on Educated White Men. Should be avoided as his material is misleading as a result of this bias.
By far the worst professor that I have had at ASU (4yrs). He will bust you out in front of everyone if your question seems to him to be not important. Kind of weird..... Lets you know he is an academic and not afraid to tell you that you are not. Didn't like him at all and if you can avoid him
terrible teacher, tests do not go with material taught needs to retire
Talks alot, but doesnt explain much.
no one needs to take his class, especially if you are not interested in history at all. he makes history more boring then any teacher i've ever had. although his tests are only 30 questions long and they are so hard unless you read the chapter like 20 times
I would not take Bishku's class. You might enjoy his class if you need to catch up on some zzz's. Read the book and you've got an A. Not impressed with lectures and he rabbled on about world history and spent very little time talking about American History.
Very oppinated, made references about who he thought should win elections very often. Made some students uncomfortable but I agree w/ some of them. Mostly lecture. Has reading book and supplement book. Supp is few questions on test and not that important. Sort of better understanding of subject
very bad professor. do not take his class. he talked about elections the whole semester. i didnt learn anything. very opinionated.
I hated him! I thought he was a stupid **** who was full of himself. He also had more interest in the female students.

Very biased. Has his own opinions. Easily off track and off topic. Tests are short but very in depth. Ended up with a B in the class. Has 3 map quiz and 4 exams but NO finals. Take very good notes!
Good Professor, very interested in topic, saw some of the other ratings and feel those students are used to teachers holding their hand. Is opinionated but better than your teacher being a robot. Would take him again,

I thought he was an awesome professor. He is very opinionated, but we share the same opinions, so maybe that is why I didn't mind. He is passionate about history and politics, which may offend some weaker minded people, but I thought he did an excellent job overall. It may do some people some good to listen to his opinions, they make sense.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES! He's pompous, full of hot air, boring, self-important and opinionated to an absurd degree. He's not that intelligent and doesn't seem to really like his students.
Very opinionated and does not stay on topic. He is very easily distracted and does not like students who come in late or leave early. He isn't very clear on what info is important and what isn't.
very boring and monotoned...i referred to his class as hell...the tests came from the book so the attendence wasnt really necessary even though it was required...it was hard to stay focused...it felt like i was in there for 3 hours at a time
his tests are easy if you take notes and follow along in the book, he's opinionated and passionate about what he says and teaches
VERY BORING!! Doesn't make learning very fun
Definately boring, but easy if you show up. Nothing but lecture, so I highly recommend a laptop for note taking.
I think that Dr. Bishku is a good professor. He doesn't have much of a personality, and can be very straight forward. He gets destracted easily and usually gives a short lecture on any topic that crosses his mind. You must study. There are 3 map quizes and four exams. Study and you'll be alright.
He is the worst teacher i have ever had. He's rude and not helpful at all. He wont answer any questions after the test and has a very bad attitude. His tests are fairly easy if you read the text and follow his outlines. I would avoid this professor at all costs.
This guy is seriously confused and spends the first month thinking he is a Geography instructor. He has a very narrow view of things, a God complex, and will insist on immersing you in his ultra-liberal ideology. He DOES NOT like anyone to express views that are different from his own. I have an A but would recommend that you avoid him if you can.
ADVOID HIM LIKE THE PLAGUE!! He spent the first hour of the class trying to start debates over the news. Then spend the last 20 minutes speed lecturing. We had to do oral presentations. Not only would he consistantly interupted (which made one presentation extremly painful for a foreign exchange student). Could go for days about him! Never agai
pompous, hates anyone with strong personality, freaks out if you don't read. liberal. hates those with jobs, that cannot devote every waking moment of life to maps and history, wants participation, but will rip you a new one if you don't agree with his beliefs
Very rude if you don't agree with what he says. Talks the first half hour of class about nothing to do with history, like why you should wash your hands after using the bathroom. Ridiculous. Made you feel stupid if you didn't know everything about history. Very liberal ideology. You are really asking for it if you take his class.
Way too liberal for the South!
Avoid this guy at all costs. He is a very bad teacher.
Ok guy. Not the nicest nor most helpful professsor I've ever had. Can be downright rude at times. Gets off the subject matter with ALOT of political rants that contribute absolutely nothing to the class. He also complains about class participation and then makes you out to be an idiot whenever you say anything. NEVER TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES.
Difficult to take notes....he jumped from subject to subject then back to an earlier mentioned subject all in one breath. Gave additional questions on test for extra credit, but they also counted against you.
Try to aviod him. I am a history major, and I can't stand this class. It's the worst history class I ever had.
very detailed and in depth in lectures. if you read the book for yourself chapter by chapter you will do good on the test. the worse thing about his test is sometimes he asks the small details of events that you normally wouldnt take mental notes of.
Hard class.
Took this class a few years ago...all he wanted to talk about was Canadian government...learned most of the info from the text and not from lectures...but overall a pretty easy class
Dr. Bishku is a well-seasoned world traveler who specializes in diplomatic history. Yes, he can be a bit crass at times; however, if you can see past that and catch what he is saying, you will recognize that he knows the world political situation pretty well. His test questions are worded such that one must do the work and attend class to do well.
Not a hard subject, but a hard class. Dr. Bishku's test were worded in a difficult manner and his lectures were boring. If you disagree with him it will be WWIII! By the last day of class there were only 7 people that showed up for the mandatory final....we began with over 30 if that tells you anything.
Dr. Bishku is a very good Professor. Yes, he can be very opinionated, I found it to be amusing. You can learn alot from him if you are not judging him by what others have to say about him. I enjoyed him and would have taken him again if I was able to fit his class (Modern Middle East) into my schedule for FA'2008.
Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A w/ little or no effort on your part. You have to read and pay attention. Dr. Bishku has had some bad reviews, but even if you are one of the many closed-minded conservatives at ASU, he still knows what he's talking about and he's willing to listen to your side, as long as you can back it up.
Awful. You will learn he loves antioxidant foods, is a vegetarian, thinks it is very important you know world civ. wants you to sit very close to other classmates. Do not take this class if you are clostraphobic. Must read book and study it. You will not learn anything from lectures except his likes & dislikes. Doesn't stay on task.
Do not take this class if you are a conservative republican! He is an opinionated liberal. How do I know this you ask? Because not once did he lecture about the material, geography, but instead used our valuable class time to educate us on his likes/dislikes and his vast knowledge of politics. Exams are awful!!
OMG this guy talks about EVERYTHING [BUT] history. ok maybe he'll talk about it for maybe 10 minutes into the lecture but then outta no where he'll talk about something like trees and the ground? waste of time and money. his study guides arent even that helpful
I advise you not to take this professor. He stands infront of the classroom and talks the entire class time. Its up to you to take notes. He gets off subject and just talks about his own opinions. Made my GPA drop, dont risk it!!!
Okay...I advise you to NOT take his class...His tests are hard and he expects you to know specific details...His lectures are not helpful at all...He's very vague, so its hard to determine what exactly to study...He's sarcastic and gives a lot of criticism...
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He is very opinionated, rude, and does not care about students feelings.. He stands in front of the class for and hour and fifteen minutes while he either reads out of the book or gives his opinion of the people in history. He is rude and will have a fit if you fall asleep.
Very Hard
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Bishku's class. Yes, it is hard. However, I learned a lot and enjoyed his teaching style. TIP: Do well on the map quizzes. They are easy and will boost your grade if you do poorly the rest of the semester.
Tough class but an "A" is attainable. Read your book thoroughly and take notes over your reading. His lectures are a mix bag; some are good and some you'll leave wondering what he was talking about. Overall, if you love history it's a great class and you'll learn a lot. Do not take as an elective.
He is terrible. I have never had to work so hard for an A in my life. He rambles about unrelated material for at least 45 minutes of class and the other part is spent lecturing. He wastes class time and I'm thrilled to pieces that he's leaving Augusta State soon.
All the people whining about Bishku are likely non-history majors. His map quizzes are cake. The tests are hard but he gives you 28 questions and grades it on a curve from 112. The only gripes I have is that he is slightly annoying with his extremely liberal slant, and the mini quiz covered a lot of material but did not count much for the grade.
gives plenty of chances to earn freebie points in class but you better KNOW history on test days. He words questions and possible answers to where you better know your stuff or you will struggle. His stance on history "Ottomans are great and Western Europe gets too much attention" I would never take him again
all he does in class is complain about things have no relation to history. things such as how overweight people are, the fact that rap music annoys him, and how everyone is so inferior to his level of intelligence. PLUS his tests don't reflect ANYTHING he teaches in class. the only good thing is that he doesn't mark attendance!
Aspects of tests are not covered in either text or inclass lectures! Map quizes are easy and help your grade but to every positive there is an extreme negative in this case. most of his lectures are not even relevant. Avoid this professor if at all possible! If you wanna see someone on a power trip: "Bishku's for you!" You've been warned! Good luck
THIS MAN IS INFURIATING!! ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS HOW THE THINGS IN OUR CURRENT SOCIETY ANNOY OR BAFFLE HIM. HE DOESNT REALLY TEACH HISTORY, JUST COMPLAINS ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS. THE MAP TEST WAS THE EASIEST PART OF THAT CLASS. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS A STRUGGLE. AVOID HIM BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!!
Dr. Bishku gets a bad rap. He IS opinionated, he DOES get off topic, but he DOES KNOW HIS HISTORY. He IS NOT the kind of professor that is going to hold your hand and spoon-feed the material to you though. He expects you to read and STUDY. If you want a pie course, don't take him.
Here are my tips to you. Do extremely well on those map quizzes. On the tests, look at the outlines and research the material in the book (the material listed in the outline). I would not recommend this professor for most people, especially not first year freshman students. I found this professor difficult and he was heavily opinionated on history.
Had him for US HIST and World Hist. Really knows his stuff but often gets onto a soap box about current events. If you catch him outside of class he's pretty nice and will actually learn you some stuff. READ READ READ since his lectures turn to personal opinion quite often
we're 3 weeks in and this professor has yet to even come close to mentioning anything even remotely related to the subject material. I do, however, know his opinions on everything from American obesity, cigarette smoking, breakfast foods and email.
This prof does digress widely from topic, in my course we got through little more than half the material. however this is the easiest class ever all I did was copy down his outlines for the material then google everything on them and I made an A. so if yuo just want an easy A take him
The only way you will pass his class is by memorizing the textbook. he just doesn't care. He digresses into political BS all the time. He is useless. He has an ego the size of a planet. I got an A by daydreaming his entire lecture (usually about Scarlett Johannson) and then just studying the textbook. just, don't take him. unless you love textbooks
Everyone who has rated Bishku is right: He talks hours about current topics and his opinions. Nothing he lectures about has to do with the subject matter. Study the maps for the 1st 3 quizzes and study his outlines/the unfinished nation textbook for the tests. You really don't need the essay textbook, waste of time!
My idea of a terrible professor. He talks about more current issues than actual history. Tests are very hard and straight from the book. Lectures are super boring and minimal grades.
Enjoyed the class, I don't know what you guys have been complaining about.
Please please please don't take him. He talks badly about people and there personal lives. Test are bad. He should not be teaching. Very rude and get mad when students dont talk. Very dry man
Dr. Bishku won't spoon-feed you. 80% of the overall lecture focuses on today's issues. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Tests come straight from there. Brinkley is the only book you really need. Overall, hard class & requires a lot of time dedication. Defining key terms, outlining the book during lecture and writing down whatever he repeats helped me the most.
He rambles a lot. I really could not follow his lectures and end up daydreaming during class. He gets everything from the book for the tests. While he is a very intelligent man who definitely knows history, he comes off very arrogant when talking to students.
He is not a bad teacher at all. Yes he rambles a lot, but it helps the class go by faster somehow. His test were extremely easy if you read the book. Also he repeats everything he says if he plans on ot being on the test. He gets a bad rap when he isn't that bad of a teacher.
He is a very arrogant man. He is very passionate about the subject he teaches and it shows. Talks a lot says he wants class participation but talks to much for that. Mist read all assigned readings to be able to pass his tests. First 3 quizzes are more geography than history but easy. He does have great office hours but prepare for a lecture.
Hes very self centered. All he does is talk about current events. I spend every class on pinterest because it kills me to listen to him. I can't follow him in lecture anyway. If you get him switch out and run
He never uses any digital media. If it weren't bad enough that he never uses a visual guide, he digresses from the subject to the point where his lectures have nothing to do with the actual readings. His tone is dry and boring, prepare to develop the attention deficit disorder that you didn't know you had.
Bishku is a nice man however, he's a terrible professor. His lectures are long and so confusing. I was in Hist 2111 and our first three quizzes were on geography. He stresses your knowledge on current events, which isn't bad, BUT during lectures he jumps from century to century. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I wouldn't recommend his class.
Dr. Bishku is not as bad as everyone claims. There are 3 map quizzes (easy), Reading Lecture quizzes which one must have an idea about a concept, and exams come directly from Brinkley textbook. He is interesting to listen to sometimes, while some classes he is just boring. He is a very nice person and is willing to talk with you about any topics (current events for participation) you want. Be ready to work hard in his class.
Longest , most off-topic lectures I've ever heard. He'll go off in a rant about nothing. the entire class is a lecture about nothing. Don't take his class.
Dr. Bishku is a great professor. He rambles on and on and on. But other than that his expectations are clear cut. His tests come right from the textbooks so as long as you read you'll make an A or B.
He is a nice guy, very sociable. Talks more about current events than history. If you take him, write down everything he says and read the book. He loves to hear himself talk. He made history very hard and the quizzes are almost impossible to pass. It's not impossible to pass the class as long as you do the work and the extra credit.
Lectures are insanely boring, his tests are ridiculous. Do not take him. I'm an A student and he gave me a C. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Please DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! especially if you're not a history fan. one of the hardest classes I have ever taken! you will definitely read a lot, his lectures are beyond boring & he jumps off subject easily.
Very unclear and you won't really know how your doing in the class until the end of the semester. Staying awake is super hard, lectures are super long and he rambles. I WOULD NOT recommend taking his class
The first three geography quizzes were quite easy however, the reading and lecture quizzes are almost impossible to pass. The majority of the questions were about small details that he didn't even spend time to talk about. You have to read the book and memorize literally everything from it because you won't learn anything from his lectures.
He is a nice professor. He tries his best and you can tell that he enjoys history. The geography tests were easy. Reading two books that are stating nearly the same concept was the hard part.
Good if you're a history major. Goes off on lots of tangents.
Bishku was probably one of the worst teachers I've EVER had. He wastes most of the class time talking about himself. He said "people are illiterate if they don't know this" at least eight times throughout the semester. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS unless you are a history major. Class was very boring and you couldn't pay me enough to take it again.
Do. Not. Take. Unless you are a history genius and already know everything about history don't take. He spends 30-45 minutes of each lecture rambling. The only thing I learned from this class is his opinion on all current events. Quizzes are super hard.
Spends too much time rambling on about current events, has a tendency to insult students, and takes any opposite opinion too personally often attacking the student instead. I would not recommend ever taking this person.
He spends most of the class talking about politics. If you are Republican, don't take him. He will attack anyone who disagrees with his opinion. He also does not explain what he's looking for clear enough, and then penalizes you. It is already a challenging class, but he makes it harder by not even talking about the material. Avoid!!!
DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. The quizzes are super hard and impossible to pass! He spends most of his lecture time talking about current events (when I took a history class) and not about actual material. When he does talk about the material, he doesn't explain it enough. If you take him, be prepared to do most of the work on your own.
Professor Bishku is a very nice guy, but he is a ridiculously vague lecturer. His quizzes are all open ended and only worth 10 points, but those questions are the most insignificant questions he could think of in relation to The chapter the quiz is over. Be ready to study your butt off and still not get the grade you want. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
Dang. I didn't think he was that bad at all. I absolutely love that he doesn't use powerpoint. I found his lectures entertaining. Geography quizzes were cake as were the tests. You must read the textbook though.
Do not take this man for whatever reason. I'm warning you right now
Professor Bishku is a rare breed. He spends half of the lecture talking about current events (and especially the ones regarding Trump). He tends to single out students that he doesn't like. His lectures are off-topic and in the best-case-scenario extremely banal. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Do not take him. He only talks on current events and absolutely none of his tests are on current events. He is a big liberal and if you give your opinion on anything he will throw something back at you and make feel stupid. He expects you to read two books and memorize everything in them.
He constantly insults and belittles students. Claims that he wants you to think critically, but shuts you down if you disagree with his OPINION. He explains things in a vague way and expects you to figure it out. Goes over 4 chapters in 2 class periods, right before the final. No review. His MC tests are insane. The whole class bombed the first one
This is the worst professor ever! He constantly insults your intelligence and your political views when they differ from yours. He spends half the class on current events. Do not take him!!!!!
Reading these ratings were quite odd to me. I never had this experience in Dr. Bishkus class. Yes, he talks politics. It's history class, what do you expect? Participation is something that makes him happy and as well as listening. His tests really aren't hard just pull the key terms from the outline and read about them. I would take him again.
Worst Professor I have ever had. He is more worried about politics than teaching what he is paid to teach. Very little grading opportunities so make the most of them. His "lectures" are based off vague outlines that don't teach you much. If you take this class make sure you read the book because he barely teaches the material that you need to know.
Quizzes on US map only; 25 question Exams. He talks about current events the entire period and does not speak of anything relevant to the textbooks. He is passionate and doesn't allow others to speak without debating what you have said. You will have to teach yourself everything from all 20 chapters for the whole semester. Not recommended.
Professor Bishku is one of the rudest professors I've had since I've been at Augusta and it's only my second year here. I dropped the class on the third day because he was very rude to me via email; I asked him to explain directions better and he didn't and called me "careless" when I submitted the assignment. Would not recommend him at all.
I'm telling you now, just avoid this professor. I saw the reviews and yet chose to ignore them. BIG MISTAKE! So passive aggressive. Picky. It's not worth risking your GPA for this class. If you need to take this course and he's the only professor, do it another semester. Only one Map assignment and 3 tests so not many chances to improve your grade.
Professor Bishku is extremely unprofessional, especially through email. His online class only has four assignments with absolutely no option of extra credit assignments or extra homework to boost your grade. If you generally need extra work to help boost your grade and don't really do well on tests I would NOT recommend you take his class.
