Good teacher, easy class, some work.
Good teacher, reminds me a little bit of my dad. Pay attention and class and you will do fine. Also, laugh at his jokes even though they aren't funny, it makes the class go by alot faster.
Great professor, but material is a little harder than it seems. Do the practice HW and go to class and you'll do fine. The books weren't helpful at all.
Good Teacher. Keeps u awoke and excited. He is really into what he's teaching. If you are business-minded person I suggest you take his class. You will learn stuff from this class that you can actually apply in the real world and it will benefit you
TAKE HIS WARNING: "this class isnt as easy as it seems". lectures are boring and you understand but come test day, i averaged 80%s (not As). he takes into consideration HW (DO IT ALL) & overall improvement for final grade so there is a "curve." i recommend going to class. Try to pay attn, tests are not mult. choice so DO study, and your'e golden.
He's incredible!
Hardest class EVER. Do the work and all the reading and make sure you do not fall behind! Also, I really hope you're great at math, because even though it's a PHILOSOPHY COURSE, you'll be solving math problems!
This professor is brilliant, if you are a FSU Philosophy student, you ought to take his Knowledge and Belief class.
If you're even marginally interested in philosophy, I would highly suggest taking a class with this professor. Intelligent without being obscure or cocky. Highly recommended.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Makes a potentially boring subject very interesting and also is pretty funny. Reading is often very dense and he does a great job at making it more understandable. Basically if you attend class you don't even need to do the readings. Highly recommend.
PHI3400 was great. Final grade is broken down very easily; in class + essays + extra credit. This is _not_ a class to skip and study on your own. If you go to class, he teaches you everything you are meant to learn from the texts. Class was stimulating, funny, interesting, and Bishop's not an ****. Very conducive to discussion; ideal PHI class.
Bishop is by far the best, and most interesting professor i have had at FSU. He makes course material interesting and really makes you think about the subject matter. You WILL have to study for tests, but with some effort you will do perfectly fine. No hidden difficulty, just pay attention! I would retake this professor!
awesome! makes wrinkled pants look decent.
This class was certainly the most interesting philosophy class I have taken at FSU. Bishop made the lectures funny and explained the text thoroughly. Of all the teacher I have had at FSU, Bishop was the least likely to make me fall asleep. He keeps the pace of the class up and he does not drone or use a monotone voice! All good in my book.
Michael Bishop is awesome. What he teaches is his passion and it really makes the material more accessible because of that. As far as work is concerned, it's all doable and you don't feel like you're wasting time. If you go to class, you pretty much don't have to read. His class has changed many ways that I view the world.
Bishop rocks. He's pretty funny and he'll stay with you after class for as long as you want to get the concepts down. JUST GO TO CLASS. If you don't go you won't do well.
Bishop is overall a great professor. He teaches interesting material, and holds the class's attention more than any professor I have had at FSU. Definitely would recommend him. You do need to go to class to get a good grade though, and the tests do require studying, but really not too much.
Amazing professor. He is incredibly entertaining. One of the best professors at FSU hands down. Must go to class to get an A, but the material is easily understandable. You also need to study for the tests, but the homeworks are really helpful in preparing.
EASY! this is a common sense class and the little math involved is 6th grade level. Attend class and there is no reason you shouldn't get an A
This is a very interesting class and the professor makes it even more interesting. However, it can be really hard. There's a lot of reading and make sure you do it or you won't understand the lecture material as well. There's also short essays for homework ever once in a while. The tests are long and it's short and long answer (no multiple choice)
Bishop is entertaining and funny, and has lots of personal stories to supplement material. You don't need the texts, though they help, but you MUST go to class to pass the tests. The class is common sense with a little math, excellent for pre-law. Lots of money advice, and the class will change the way you look at things and how you make decisions.
Great teacher, very helpful and approachable. Friendly and funny, his lectures were entertaining enough that they got me out of bed in the morning.
He says um millions of times in one sentence
Great professor. Made class fun, exciting, and overall an enjoyable experience. Lots of real world knowledge, and he does a great job helping you out and explaining difficult concepts. Funny too
he is a great great teacher. knows his stuff and is witty and makes you want to learn it. tells lots of jokes/stories during class. you feel smarter after the semester is over!
Bishop is the best professor I've had at FSU. He's so smart and really loves what he does, and it's infectious. He really wants to help and get you interested and asking questions. He made me want to go to graduate school for this. Seriously I can't say enough good things. It's a challenge but soo worth it. + I think he's hot which doesn't hurt :)
Michael bishop is an awesome teacher. he is very smart and knows how to make the subject matter very intriguing. go to class often and you will do fine. one of the best teachers i have had in my college career. please take this class!
Bishop has so far been the best philosophy professor I have had. He is extraordinarily helpful--answers all e-mails in a timely manner and has real concern for the kids who don't understand the material and approach him about it. The material on its own would be dull and dense, but he makes it engaging and comprehensive.
GO TO CLASS! You have to go to class. If youre struggling and you complete all the ICA's and homework assignments he will boost your grade DRAMATICALLY.
Bishop is awesome. One of the classes I had no interest in the material but had to take it and he is actually pretty funny, enjoyable to listen to. I liked having an actual feeling of learning somethig and a new way to look at things. Just go to class and do the homework he will take care of you.
Bishop is really engaging. He makes class fun although the material is kind of difficult. If you read the text and pay attention in class you'll be fine. One of the best philosophy professors yet
Bishop is probably one of the best professors I've ever had at FSU. This class is pretty easy if you just go to class. Big + is that this class counts as a gordon but they're no essays! There's extra credit and he boosts your grade if put forth effort! I would definitely take him again!!
This was a great class. Not only was the material interesting, but Professor Bishop made the class fun. If you go to class and do all of the homework assignments, he will boost your grade in the class at the end. Would recommend him to anyone.
Bishop is not only really smart, but he's also really funny and makes the subject matter interesting. The class isn't the easiest because while the material is easy, you have to apply your knowledge on tests which is always harder than just regurgitating it. Otherwise, if you go to class and put forth effort, this is an excellent class!!
The tests were mostly trick questions. The exam reviews were useless. Bishop makes class interesting and funny, but does not do a good job of showing students how to do symbolic math problems. He will massively curve your grade if you do all the homework and in class assignments. Going to class is a must.
Bishop is the coolest professor I've had at FSU. His stories are super interesting which add to him teaching the lessons because that way he draws you in to paying more attention. The material is ok depending on the lesson but the info is very useful outside the class. Take the class for the outside knowledge! Also he curves the grades extremely.
Bishop may be a smart man but a BAD teacher. He would rarely respond to my emails, test questions are significantly harder than any examples from class, and he focusses on trying to be funny more than actually teaching the material. He basically teaches you %20 then you have to figure out the last %80 on your own. Unless its required, DONT TAKE IT.
Bishop is an awesome professor, the class can be confusing at time but going to class is so helpful. The way he grades at the end of the semester is awesome too but he checks on participation and attendance. Interesting class and an overall good professor for this course.
I loveee Bishop He was awesome Very easy and entertaining class. I recommend it to everyone needing a writing credit I am not a Philosophy major nor would I ever want to be, but I would take any class he taught Make sure you do the readings
Would not suggest this class to anyone who isn't interested in philosophy. Written tests were graded by unknowledgeable TAs who were often as unsure of their answers as the students were. His lectures are entertaining and he is a very funny person but as a professor some topics were very unclear. Group work is common and going to class is essential
Take this class only if you have to (Pre-Law)
In my class he gave out group assignments usually once every few classes. If you go to class all the time, do all assignments and homework, he will seriously boost your grade. I had a 85 but attended every class and did all my work and he gave me a 95. Highly recommend and do not jump to conclusions when you don't feel like you are doing well.
PHI 2100- Reasoning and Critical Thinking Professor Bishop clearly knows what he is talking about ant love it, but because he is so comfortable with it, he moves quickly. His lectures are very very informal, breezing through note slides (if he uses them) and gives lots of anecdotes as examples to teach. Its a tough class
Do the homework, show up to class, and you should be fine as long as you are able to reason relatively well.
Class can be difficult, he is a hard grader, all test are essays. Involves math and fractions so be ready for that. He works from start to finish.
Not a bad teacher really. There's a lot of material but it's relatively easy to understand. There are essays and they're not easy. I averaged out to a C in this section, but majority of the credit is from tests and in class assignments. Try to go to class ever time too. Hopefully I pull an A, he gives bumps to students who try hard all semester.
If lectures were clear, it would be okay, but they're not. He's cocky and rambles during lectures. You will have a partner all semester, but that is actually very helpful to try to decipher what he is trying to say.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took it for a math credit. I have been a straight A student my entire life and math is my strong point. I am barely hanging on to a D right now. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
He's great: great course design, good lectures, etc. Take his classes if you like philosophy.
Bishop teaches a class that isn't exactly easy, but he tells you exactly how to pass it. He is really big on effort and will bump generously if he knows you tried (went to every class, turned in assignments on time, etc.). I would take another course with him, funny guy and easy to follow his lectures.
Super tough class. The test questions are literally all trick questions. Bishop is fair and helpful if you go to his office hours from my experience, but other people said he was kinda condescending. Very amusing teacher/class, and I would love it if it wasn't such a trap. He bumps like crazy so it doesn't end up too hard to get a good grade.
This class was difficult, more about understanding than memorizing. If you are there for all of the in class assignments (16) and did the blue books, he will curve your final grade 10 points. I'd go see the TAs before each paper (2), they will help you. Bulk of the grade is tests. He comes across as arrogant, but he's helpful. Counts as math credit
Good teacher, he's very fair and gives out plenty of practice before the exams. If you come to class everyday and do the work, you'll pretty much be assured an A. Plus, he's so funny!
This class is very interesting and a great course but this is NOT an easy A. I am an A student and worked my absolute hardest to receive a B+(which was curved). He wants his students to do well and will curve your grade if you put in the effort but this class is very hard and you wont pass if you dont go to class. Great professor and great class
I like his sense of humor and he knows his subject well BUT BEWARE, this class is VERY DIFFICULT. The way that he teaches makes it hard to understand the subject content, which in itself is convoluted and demanding of a very specific way of thinking. Swallow your pride when you take this class and be honest with yourself - or else you'll fail!
He seems really cool and lenineant at first, but at the end of the semester that all goes out the window. He tells you as long as you come to class and show improvement through your test grades youre bound to get a good grade in the class and that theres a 10 pt curve. Thats a lie, I attended every class and improved on my tests... no curve
Good philosophy courses encourage you to think outside the box. This course had me thinking very much in the box, as I spent much of the course completing "box problems" that were so repetitive and mind numbing that I entered into a sort of seasonal depression. I feel as though I've just completed an intro course in patience and elementary math.
He is arrogant, unhelpful, and his grading scale is convoluted. The grades are based mostly on tests, so one bad grade could cause you a lot of problems. The material is irrelevant and most of class time is spent on useless personal anecdotes. AVOID
I had a very difficult time in this class and had to drop it. Dr. Bishop is arrogant and overall just not pleasant. Some people in the class adjusted very well in the class and loved him, so it really just depends person to person.
Worst thing you could do is take this class. Dont be fooled by the good reviews, I guarantee this isnt the class you want to take.
Dont take this class unless you want an instructor who is arrogant, unprofessional and condescending. During my time in taking this class, 20 tests were lost which is extremely irresponsible and this class is based off of made up stuff. Ive been an A+ student my entire life yet I have difficulty. AVOID at all costs. Not worth it.
Professor Bishop is very knowledgeable in his subject, ufortunately, he takes this knowledge and uses it as an excuse to act superior to students . He grades based on 3 tests and 2 papers, but the grading process is very subjective. He grades not based on understanding of material but ability to explain the material to others not in the class.
Hilarious guy. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, although he gave out team worksheets that you sign your name on sometimes so its best to just go. Also, its way easier to know whats going on when you listen to his lectures. Should be easy for people who follow directions and have common sense.
You're assigned a group of 4 at the beginning of the semester, and you're stuck with them for the ENTIRE SEMESTER, for better or worse. The team-based assignments are decently helpful , and his 1st test is easy, but the 2nd test and the final are impossible. The test environment is not secure. And the TAs have no idea what they are doing. 0/5 stars
This class is tough, but an A is definitely doable if you attend every class, pay attention, and actually do every single assigned reading (readings really do reinforce lecture content). If you are not prepared to do that, then I do not recommend taking this class as it gets progressively more difficult and lectures build off of one another.
Bishop know his subject well but he doesn't offer advice or any aid to students. There is no help or guide on the papers. You're best bet is to print out all of the notes and study them well. My TA's were horrible and offered NO help. Not to mention they lost my test and I had to retake it near finals week. Grades take forever to go in. don't take.
Bishop is a great professor. He is clear about his expectations and he knows his stuff. His lectures are engaging and easy to get through. I didnt find him arrogant, but he could be a little condescending (but what professor isnt). I recommend taking his class
Took this class for summer C. Attendance graded through inclass assignments only, not worth a lot, but attendance is important to do well. Was a fair professor & gave fair amounts of assignments. If you pay attention during class & do well on the homework you will do well on tests. Explains material in depth and is not boring. Enjoyed this class.
just don't take it. no help at all and all material made up with no book to reference. you are left to fend for your self with the readings he composes. 3 tests make up more then half of your grade and are only writing and all cumulative. unless you love principles and reasoning methods its gonna be a long semester for you. NOT A ETHICS CREDIT
A great professor. Bishop's lectures are phenomenal and he always sets out clear expectations. Don't take this class if you want an "easy A", take it if you want to actually enrich yourself.
cannot answer a question without getting into a scenario based speech. You end more confused. Im taking this class during COVID and he cant organize himself online. He ignores questions he finds dumb On zoom and you have to read 3-4 hours a day to write an hour long daily essay. He grades SO difficult and no feedback. Lost 10pounds in 2 weeks. No.
The discussions are quizzes are fairly straightforward. You will need to watch all of these videos he posts, but they aren't very lengthy. If you don't get the grade you want on your essays, make sure to read his feedback and adjust accordingly with the next essay. You should be prepared to do independent research to understand things more.
Bishop made Philosophy very interesting and entertaining. He is a funny guy and really cares about his students. He is always available for questions and will even respond to your emails in the middle of the night. This class involves a lot of writing and reading but Bishop makes sure you understand the material clearly.
Class is difficult and he is quite condescending. Doesn't seem to care about students and his TA is a bit of a jerk. Going online made it a lot harder and even before then, I found myself unable to pay attention to the lectures. He tries to be funny but it comes off more as cocky. He's ok but not the best.
Bishop is a good professor and pretty funny. He makes the complex ideals of philosophy easier and focuses on the existence of a creator and propaganda. There are at least 2 quizzes each class and an assignment due before each class. You will get a good grade if you pay attention, put some work into it and take notes (optional for personal use).
I feel as though students will either love or really dislike Dr. Bishop's class. I took it remotely, and it was a little difficult, with (short) essays due before every class and several quizzes per class. If you don't put in good work, you will not make a good grade. That being said, I really liked him and his class, and would take him again.
Really great guy to be honest. You will have a quiz or two every day in class over zoom so make sure you go. Cares for students and explains topics as long as it takes for you to get it. No exams and drops several grades, as well as extra credit. Reading is challenging but you will get through it. He also reuses past quiz questions.
Took this remotely, he's a very funny teacher, and honestly, it's pretty easy to follow his lectures when paying attention. Be prepared to do multiple quizzes/participation assignments per class, and there's a small essay due at the beginning of most classes. I learned a lot more than I expected to.
This dude sucks. His expectations are ridiculous for an introduction class and he has no sense of humor. Most boring class I have ever sat through. I throughly recommend finding a new philosophy professor.
Great guy and very funny. Absolutely nothing wrong with him. Expect homework EVERYNIGHT and quizzes everyday. TAKE NOTES ON HW or you will not pass. Class is cumulative so make sure to remember the basics. Wish it was an easier class because I really like Professor Bishop it was just very hard for no reason since it was a beginner class.
He's a pretty good teacher if you have some ability to interpret his lectures yourself. He's a funny guy and pretty laid back. The reason why his score is so low is that you do have to write like a paragraph daily and take around a 20 question quiz at the end of every class. Tbh its not that hard if you just stay on top of your stuff.
This class has taught me so much and although it was difficult, it was a pleasure to be taught by Bishop. He makes class fun and interesting. I would beware of his daily essays as his TA dont give much feedback but overall just read the textbook and youll do great
Loved professor Bishop! This class was definitely not the easiest class I have taken but Bishops lectures have been so enriching! Definitely show up to class as the readings can be difficult to grasp, especially at the beginning of the semester, however Bishop always did his best to clarify and educate on what makes a bad and good argument.
Professor Bishop is an amazing philosophy professor. His introductory classes are by no means difficult, they are mostly dependent on effort put into the class. If you do all your assignments on time and put in the time for the class, you will excel in his courses. He's also pretty funny.
Bishop cares more about people putting in effort rather than their actual grade, so 50% of your grade is participation. But he really does look at how much time students are putting into his assignments, and sometimes he'll throw you off to see if you're paying attention. I liked his class a lot, but sometimes it's tedious.
Very confusing grading scheme, and you will not know your actual grade until the class is over.
He's a great guy and interesting to listen to. I liked the content of the class, but the grading was SO confusing. The content is actually easy, but he words things weird and he assigns a lot of homework. You also don't know your grade. I thought I was doing okay then my grade dropped 2 letters on the last day. Also doesn't respond to emails.
Bishop is awesome. I found the course material very interesting and if you do the reading homeworks (which aren't long) you should completely understand the material. The difficult topics he thoroughly reviews in class. He's funny and makes it easy to pay attention. Its difficult to get a bad grade here. Grading is simple, mostly effort based.
Anyone who gave a low rating just didn't put in the effort. The class was super interesting and he cares about his students.
Bishop's class is so interesting. Readings before every class which are actually interesting to read. No textbook. The class is mostly effort-based and as long as you pay attention, you'll do good on the quizzes. This class actually changes the way you think for the better.
We're kept overtime because he has no time management and rambles on with stories nobody asked for. His explanations are shallow; he's more concerned with looking cool. He also does not know how to manage zoom, and his TAs don't help. We're told to not worry about grades or canvas mess-ups, but nothing is rectified or clear. Don't waste your time.
I really enjoyed this course and learned concepts I plan to use for the rest of my life. The grading system is straightforward, but you won't know your grade until the end (he gives a lot of As tho). He's really funny, and you can tell he cares about the class. As long as you complete the readings and put in effort, you'll do well in the class.
Bishop is the absolute best! He is so funny and makes class so fun! He tells the best stories and makes the concepts really easy to understand. You don't even have to buy a textbooks since all of the readings are written by him and posted on canvas. Bishop slays.
At least one reading before class and at least one quiz after. It's an interesting course and he explains the concepts well. The entire experience was perfectly average.
This class is difficult and you're probably going to have to alter the way you think. However, this is one of the few college classes (especially considering that it's a gen-ed course) that is going to teach you something incredibly valuable that you can apply to life. Show up, read, and put forth an honest effort and you'll do fine. Great guy.
He was a very funny professor, the way he taught the class was unique, and the concepts were useful and easy to grasp. However, the grading criteria are very unclear (you don't get a grade until the end of the semester!), and he can sometimes seem a little overconfident. Overall though, would recommend.
Bishop is actually one of the coolest professors I've ever had in my life. He always finds a way to make concepts stick through the use of hilarious personal anecdotes or metaphors, and he prioritizes his students' understanding of the concepts being taught over all else. The class does require lots of readings and in class exams, but its worth it
Bishop is one of those professors you are going to remember for sure. His course is taught differently and that can be a good thing or a bad thing. His course is graded mostly by his choice of what he thinks you deserve at the end but he is very clear about how to do well. I'm not someone who even likes philosophy but he is rly good at what he does
He assigns multiple quizzes at random that are due the same day, and if you don't get 100% you get a zero. There are multiple attempts, but each one is designed to have slight changes that you won't necessarily notice even with careful reading so that you fail. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
AMAZING professor. Everyone who actually showed up to class and paid attention to his lectures got As, easily. The people here complaining about him just didn't show up to class.
His way of teaching is a little wacky, but you get used to it. The class is very well structured. Readings are due before class. They're in canvas quizzes and he wrote everything. There are participation assignments during class and quizzes at the end of class. If you go to class, and actually read you'll do well. I'd definetly take him again!
Goofball
Bishop has a really interesting way of teaching but for me, I like it so I enjoy his class. I never thought I would enjoy philosophy but he does a very good job of explaining everything and he makes the lectures very interesting and interactive. If you try in the class and go (almost) every day you'll do good.
Literally all you have to do to get an A is show up to class and do a short participation assignment he gives you the answers for, an end of class quiz that's only a small part of the grade, and weekly short reading assignments (literally 10 min max). He's a super nice guy and really lenient, his only criteria for giving As is that you tried.
He is an awesome professor. He was a very engaging teacher and is very fair. He grades a lot on in-class quizzes and effort. As long as you make improvements in the class and show up to class then you will do well.
he is good
As long as you read the readings assigned for homework and show up to class, you will get an A. The content itself is very interesting and assignments are as well. Attendance is mandatory as if you miss a class you miss a daily quiz. Highly recommend if you are prepared to focus, he reuses quiz questions and all are open notes.
Best professor I've had, funny and tells you exactly what you need to know for every quiz. There is a quiz at the end of every class (I took it over summer B 6 weeks so it might be different for other semesters), but there were no tests, mid-terms, or finals. Just participate in class and complete/turn in the readings on time (not hard).
best prof i've ever had! i truly believe everyone at FSU should be required to take this class. i will use what i've learned in this class for the rest of my life. such an easy A as long as you show up and pay attention. attendance mandatory!
The way the class works is there are 3 types of assignments: reading (before every class), participation (during every class), and quizzes (at the end of every class). reading and participation grades are given by professor himself after he reviews your activity on canvas, 2 lowest quiz grades are dropped. no exams and the lectures are entertaining
You have to go to class or you will not pass. But he wants you to learn and is fun to listen too. This class is challenging for sure but I would take it again.
The way the class structured is very confusing and unclear
He tries way too hard to police to the point this guy has literal trust issues. I had a death in my family and this guy was the least caring dude I've ever met. At the end of the semester when I missed the syllabus quiz this guy legit made me take an essay to "make up" that missed first-day easy 10 questioned quiz. Beware.
Literally does not teach just goes over information he expects us to know from readings the night before. Goes back on what he says every week and covers the same information several times and contradicts himself. Not lenient at all and grades are effort based but you have to do good on quizzes. Just don't take him.
Professor Bishop was one of my favorite professors all semester. While there are readings every night, he does makes them very engaging. He also tends to be pretty understanding of absences as long as there is sufficient proof. It is extremely easy to get an A in this class. Overall an excellent teacher and the perfect class for an ethics credit.
Bishop was my first professor at FSU during Summer B 2023. He was very insightful and genuinely demonstrated mastery of philosophy. Even if you're not that interested at first, his compelling stories and funny personality made the class extremely fun and bearable.
One of the most entertaining and easy going professors I have had at FSU. It is very easy to do good in this class if you just show up and complete the assignments. His expectations are clear and attainable. Just do your best and put in effort and you will be perfectly fine.
This class was so cool, Bishop teaches you how to be a good critical thinker irl, it's honestly worth taking just for that. Grade is easy, you literally just pay attention to pre-class readings and do in-class assignments, thats it. Only advice is understand your mistakes and don't be absent. There's no final, you can miss 2 classes, its awesome.
Bishop's PHI2010 class is a blast! He's engaging, funny, and really breaks down philosophy in a way that makes it super accessible. With weekly quizzes, readings, and Unstuck ai for study prep, you'll crush this class without too much stress.
THIS IS NOT AN ETHICS CREDIT! Take PHI2010. Other than that this class is easy, readings before class, and quiz daily on the readings. Few "essays" that are not bad either. Only problem you cannot see you're grade until the end because he waits to grade your participation. Easy and entertaining, just go to class.
He's a great professor who really means well for his students. Uniquely funny and he makes the class very comprehensible. You can apply his content to everyday case scenarios. The class itself isn't difficult at all as long as your engaged with the coursework during class.
