Michael is great! I had previously taken statistics in high school so I didn't struggle much, however for the students who did struggle he was willing to help and was very flexible outside of class. He curved the tests and the class overall. He is very fair and can own up to the test being to hard or long and will adjust it based on class average.
Extremely reasonable professor. Attending most lectures, Doing most Practice Problems, & Attending Pre-Midterm/Pre-Final Review best bets to pass class. Also get cheat sheets for all exams. If you do bare minimum you will pass!
Micheal really cares for his students. He is very fair in grading and on his exams. Exam 1 was too long, so he changed grading so that if we did better on exam 2, that score would replace exam 1. Answers *all* questions on Piazza and is very helpful in class. Great lectures. However, exams are worth 85% of grade but the averages are around 90%.
Never finished his lecture printouts. Takes forever to grade. Poor timing when posting homework, lecture files, and opening submissions for homework. Acts like this class isn't a priority, has an attitude when answering questions. Exams are too long, 3/4ths of the class didn't even finish the first midterm. Nice guy, but needs help preparing class.
Great teacher. Stats is hard you will have to put in work outside of class, but his lectures are clear and HW/discussion worksheets look like the exams. Chill guy, owns up to his mistakes, and very accessible on Piazza which is rare. HW has book problems and R coding. The rest of the grade is exams. Awesome choice for STA 100, really good teacher.
BEST PROF EVER! Very cool to talk to. Grades based off HW & exams. Exams are IDENTICAL to HW. HW is identical to lectures so just practice. Owns up to his mistakes and fixes them. VERY receptive to student feedback. Answers ALL students' Qs and emails. Lectures are very engaging and detailed. Lectures are recorded. DEF RECOMMEND!
I'm a grad student taking STA 100 as a prereq and was dreading it but I couldn't recommend Dr. Bissell enough. Dare I say he even made stats kind of fun. He records lectures and is super accessible on Piazza. The first midterm had issues as it was super long but he was receptive to student feedback and dropped the grade. Quite homework heavy though
so nice!! really cares about student feedback (I think b/c he's not a prof, he's from industry), so he's still testing the waters. super straight forward and doesn't try to trick us. really active on piazza too! graded off of hw, midterms (he took the higher of 2), and final. hw included book hw and R hw (he gives all the code and video tutorials).
Great professor, straightforward and clear. Tests were exactly like homework, discussion, and lecture. Super fair and a great and clear explainer. Made me like stats
He's the most straight forward prof I've ever had. He basically told us what was guaranteed to show up on the final and his exams are almost exactly like the hw and lec examples. He admits to and compensates for his mistakes and answers EVERY piazza comment quickly. He WILL call u out on piazza for re-asking a previously answered q, so stay on it.
Great lecturer and tests were extremely similar to homework. There were not too many homework assignments and gave us plenty of input on what to expect on exams throughout the quarter. It felt like he genuinely cared a lot about teaching us the material and was passionate about the topics he discussed.
Definitely the best instructor I've had at Davis so far. He made it clear he wanted his students to succeed in his class. Midterms and final were exactly like the homework and discussion section worksheets. Lectures were not mandatory and are available on canvas. He can be very sassy via email but is very kind and wants you to succeed. Check Piazza
Bissell is a really good professor. Stats isn't an easy subject but he genuinely cares about his students and listens to feedback. Stay on top of his class though because a lot of the topics build on each other and it's easy to fall behind. In his words... "READ PIAZZA!" (No curve though).
Professor Bissell was a really great teacher! His homework assignments were fair and served as great study material for the midterms. You do have to put in the work for this course, especially when it comes to R-programing. I had some trouble with the R portions of the homework, but Piazza was helpful in figuring out how to do those problems.
Explained concepts well in lectures, although mistakes were relatively common. Exams were very similar to practice/homework problems; there are a couple of memorization questions that he tells you beforehand that are actually on the test. Make sure you memorize them! Grading criteria was not really clear, but it was his first quarter back.
Graded by only 5% Piazza Participation and the rest is exams, almost 50% of the class fails on each exam.
The only problem is that he grades on 3 tests (multiple choice), a final, and piazza participation with no homework. Otherwise, he's an amazing lecturer and explains things in a simplified manner. As long as you do, the problem sets and attend office hours, you will pass.
Great lecturer, there were a lot of midterms but the final pulled questions directly from the midterms with exactly the same numbers. Definitely recommend
Not to be a D1 glazer, and I am usually not inclined to write a rate my professor (actually never written one so this is the first) but this professor is very good at teaching and is very understanding and inspirational. if you study only the practice exams and get used to the concepts you will pass. He gives second chances so don't disappoint.
Dr. Bissell made learning statistics so easy. He cares about the success of his students. Some people were struggling and he wanted everyone's input about the weight of the final to improve everyone's final grade. His letter grade cutoffs at the end of the quarter were VERY generous also. If you have the opportunity, take his class! He's the best!
THE GOAT. Genuinely cares about his students, and actually listens to their input/feedback. He's a little bit sassy sometimes but is a great lecturer overall. The material, if you aren't great at it might be a difficult, however he is very accessible through office hours and piazza - which helps if you have any questions. Study problem sets = A.
Bissell has been my favorite "lecturer" so far!!! I've never had a lecturer/professor who cares for their students as much as Bissell. He's so accessible outside of class through Piazza and has replied to over 300+ student question posts in the quarter. He sets you up to succeed and is very generous with the overall class curve. Must take!!
He is the best!!!! Take him!! Very clear
If you really want to learn stats take professor Bissell! The best professor in ever!
Prof. Bissell makes Stat 103 engaging, even at 8 AM Mondays! Doesn't require attendance but attending boosts understanding of heavy content. His office hours are gold for exam prep, answering all questions with care. Dedicated to students' success, he blends statistics with fun soccer facts. A must-attend for anyone looking to ace stats!
Consistently good professor. Explained things in a palatable manner and engaged in students' questions and concerns. Provided many ways for students to get A's in the class. Tests are almost exact replicas of the lengthy problem sets. Final was taken out of midterm. Got a bit fast during the second half of the quarter but overall great teacher.
Such a good professor, he truly cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. Use Piazza and go to office hours, you will learn so much!
This professor made me love stats. His teaching was very clear and helpful. Office hours were supper helpful for working through problems as well.
One of the best professors I have had at Davis. He genuinely cares about each student and wants you to succeed in the class.
He works in industry researching breast cancer. Sometimes he talks about how statistics we're doing are actually applied in industry, which is very cool. This man makes me want to be a professional statistician.
This man inspired me to get a stats minor. The real world examples he gives are interesting and the tests are always similar to the hw, discussion, and lecture problems. He also gives a bit of extra credit for participating. I took this in summer school, and though it was twice the pace it was very rewarding to learn.
Great and engaging lectures and office hours are helpful. Doesn't give a practice exam but the exams are copies of homework/discussion problems. Take him if you can!!
He just can't write a proper test. All the questions are weird and unclear.
Bissell might have the best and most helpful lectures I've seen by a professor so far at UCD. Attending every lecture is a guaranteed A(B minimum) in the class and he's very helpful during office hours. If you know how to do the homework and discussion worksheets without looking at a key, you should be able to get an A on every exam.
GOAT stats professor
Dr. Bissell has some of the best lectures I've experienced in my college career (currently a 3rd year). He is very clear with PLENTY of examples. Everything is easy to understand and makes sense. Could not recommend the class more!
Very good teacher, highly recommend, lectures are super helpful, discussions are option, and homework is mostly graded on completion. You also get one dropped, and your final can replace one midterm if you do better on it.
He's such a goated instructor (doesnt liked to be called professor since i think he's technically not). Easy A if you pay attention to lectures. weekly hws are easy and helpful for midterms. super caring, gives hw extensions. barely have to memorize anything since everything is on the formula sheet so its rlly easy. so glad i took sta 100 with him.
Bissell explains concepts very well and has engaging lectures. Easy class and not much memorization required since most formulas and definitions are on the formula sheet.
Super chill and funny, 2 multiple choice midterms (12 or 13 questions) that are exactly problems from hw/discussion and super straightforward, really accessible outside class through piazza and gives help/hints on hw, gives about a week to do each hw and lets you drop lowest one, final was similar to midterms just longer (~20 questions)
The best option for STA100. Do the discussion worksheets and hw and you'll be set for the exams (they are very similar); the lecture examples were very similar to them as well. Lectures were informative and he explained potentially confusing concepts perspicuously. He also works in cancer research so a lot of problems will relate to real problems.
Great lecturer! Lecture slides very helpful and homework is similar to what you'd see on exams. Very accessible when you need help. Makes it fun to learn about statistics.
P(A in Class | Dr. Bissel is Chill) = Amount of effort you put in. Stats for me was HARD, harder than any of my other science classes, and I hated the class at first. But Dr. Bissel is funny, chill, and encouraging, and he made the class enjoyable. SIT UP FRONT AND ASK QUESTIONS, GO TO DISCUSSION. The only downside is that he is a Liverpool fan :(.
Goated professor! The only things I studied for midterms/finals were hw and discussion problems and ended up with a 100% in the class lol! Never opened the book or watched any online videos on stats. Everything that's taught in class is very well reflected on the exams. Keep doing hw and discussion problems over and over again and you'll be fine.
I had a horrible experience with biostats in undergrad and was nervous about taking stats again in grad school. However, after taking Michael's class, I feel like I've seen the light. He is incredibly competent, caring, and practical. He treats his students as equals and will go the extra mile to make sure that they succeed. Take his class.
Great lecturer. The exams are basically the hw and discussion, but with different numbers and he makes it very clear what he expects from everybody.
Prof Bissell was probably one of my favorites professors at Davis. He's super chill and really helps you to understand material. Def would recommend for this class
Bissell is a great lecturer and makes information clear and easy to understand. My one downside about his teaching is that it does get really boring at times due to him answering repetitive questions or repeating information. But he is nice, understanding, and is quite fun to listen to. He is proactive and you can tell he cares about his students.
Super fair prof. Exams are pretty much just like the hw so if you redo them + disc worksheets, you're set. Lectures are engaging and clear. One downside is that the lecture is 50 min long so exams are really short and one q wrong means your score is almost a B. As someone who hates computers the R hw was kinda rough but office hours help a lot.
the goat, his lectures are very good and the HW + test questions are extremely similar to lec examples. tests were all MC and he gives a very detailed formula sheet so u can just plug and chug for most problems. plus he seems like genuinely cool guy and relates lecture examples to stuff he does at his industry job so its actually interesting.
He's a great dude overall, I really enjoyed learning the material, and he made Stats seem not so intimidating. I really did not put in a ton of effort into this class outside of study for exams and the hmwk, the only reason I lost my A is cuz i beefed it on the final a litte, and even then my grade was still good.
The best professor ever take him please. His HW is not bad at all and for coding, there is so much help on piazza and he answers really fast. Midterms and final are the exact same as the HW and discussion worksheets, just a little different wording and numbers.
Michael is the goat. Fun guy and super chill. Just do the homework, discussion, memorize the central limit theorem, and you are chilling. He also speaks fluent Japanese which is cool.
HANDS DOWN BEST PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD. I learned so damn much so well, his lectures were just amazing like AMAZING. I never thought I would actually love stats but he made me love it and find the need for it, best class 10/10
Okay, this has got to be the worst case of "I told you so" I have ever had with a professor. All of his teachings were via the lectures and there were no clear ways to learn besides genuinely studying on your own. I had lost all hope but were somehow able to squeeze myself through this nightmare with a passing grade. Great guy, but I need the book
I'm not a math person at all, but Professor Bissell is an amazing teacher. He has made me realize the potential I have as a student and he is so empathetic. Go to his office hours, DO THE PROBLEM SETS, read notes and watch lectures. You will do good in this class if you do the problem sets over and over again, there are no tricks
Almost everyone got at least a C on the midterm and a handful of people got As. Amazing professor, exams are almost identical to problem sets and you shouldn't worry if you did more than half of the problems for each set. Btw he have insane lore he worked in banking oversees and is fluent in Japanese which is pretty dope
Professor Bissell is a "tough love" professor, his class was difficult but he provides a lot of helpful recourses and practice materials. Make sure to study the optional "homework" sheets and go to office hours. Michael himself is very nice and genuinely wants you to succeed and does everything he can to get you to truly understand the material.
great dude, treacherous class and teaching style. organic chemistry tutor will be your best friend.
if you even miss one class, good luck
Super enthusiastic during lectures and was very open to questions. Exams were reasonable. Discussion not mandatory, went over weekly R-studio hw. Great professor!
I attended 5ish in-person classes and watched the rest of the lectures online. It was completely my fault for not studying more for the exams. Do the practice problems / problem set AS HE TEACHES...not the day before the exam. Bissell was a good professor though...my low grade was my fault. Should have put more effort into the class.
Dr. Bissell is such a chill and nice professor. He clearly explains the concepts in his lectures. The midterms are all multiple choice and fairly short. The discussions also teach you how to use RStudio and you'll have to use R on some of the homework too. Overall, it's not too hard and RStudio isn't intimidating for people who don't code.
He wasn't very kind regarding asking questions on piazza, even though that's how he wanted the class structured. Oftentimes, when I would write something on piazza to ask a clarification question, he would be brief and make you feel like it was a dumb question.
Isn't very supportive when asking for help on material. During today's midterm someone said they were stuck on a question and he made sure they knew it was their fault and to do better next time
Very degrading when you ask a clarification question. I recommend taking this class with someone else unless you already know how to do statistics
To Michael Bissell, You are my teacher My only teacher You make me happy When I get A's You'll never know, dear How much I love you Please don't take My good grades away
He has the course flow down. Once you get on his pace and don't fall behind, his homework and exams are predictable
If Michael has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Michael has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Michael has only one fan, then that is me. If Michael has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Michael, then I am against the world.
HE GOES SO DAMN FAST... the wording on his exams is very confusing, if you have not taken stats before and math isn't your strongest subject.. run
Best professor at UCD by far!! didn't know math could be so fun and interesting. As long as you put effort to learn you will do well, he's so caring and helpful if you have any questions. His lectures weren't a bunch of info crammed he takes his time to make sure all student understand. Might have to change my major tbh
Bro might actually be goated. graded by a final and 2 midterm, one of the midterms are dropped and you have the chance to make up for midterm mistakes on the final. Gives a lot of "homework" that is optional but doing them repetively is the best way to pass the class -- almost everyone got above a B in the final which is suprising for a math class
If I could give him any rating, I'd rate him a 6.7/5 :)
Very straightforward/ fair professor. HW sets are similar to exam. Go to lectures. They are very interesting and made me genuinely enjoy statistics. If you pay attention closely a lot of fundamental math stuff you learn in high school starts making sense in a practical way. He makes sure you understand how statistics affects real human lives.
Funny professor. Exams are practically simplified cut and paste of the homework and discussion questions. Didn't go to any lectures or watch recordings and still did fine.
excellent clear structured teaching. teach through practice questions & cases. encourage & answer questions during lecture. 2 mid 12 mcq, final 20 mcq * 5 points + 15 points written part. >50% of class get A so no curve. easy exam as long as you study. bissell is really a funny guy he sometimes jokes on piazza lol.
Bissel is a great professor. He's funny and clear with expectations/ grading. Grades are based on mainly exams and homework. As long as you stay on top of lecture content + homework, you'll be ready for his tests. The one downside is his midterms are all mcqs w/ no partial credit. But the final can replace your midterm scores if you do better.
Dr. Bissell is one of the best lecturers I've ever had! He made everything very easy to understand and exams were based off homework (who doesn't love that??). He was super funny and made the course objectives consistently clear throughout the quarter. Highly recommend him!!
Professor is very clear on what you need to know for exams because they are exactly like the homework assignments. Still, for some reason I didn't do that great on exams but I feel this is partially due to not studying enough. You MUST memorize the definitions that specifically say they need to be memorized which is very few. Study and you do good.
Be proactive, he's responsive on piazza but be ready for sassy/won't answer (not mean though). I don't code so R was annoying but survivable. Tests are majority MCQ, worth 85% of grade so high pressure but EASY. ~1/2 of the class gets an A so no curve. By the books strict, but he's hilarious in lecture. Scared of selfies. Lots of 6 7, sigma jokes
he's a bit strange and can be very snappy and rude on piazza, his last announcements to the class basically consisted of saying “don't even bother asking me to round or curve idc”, class is doable but the wording on his tests is hard and he goes fast during lectures
Dr. Bissell does a great job explaining the material and is always ready to help you out on Piazza. Midterms and final are very similar to the homework, and he makes his expectations very clear. One/both midterms are dropped as well if u do better on the final. However, all this means not much room for errors- miss a couple points and you get A-.
He's good at teaching, makes 67 jokes lol, and is helpful during office hours - sidebar I respect how absolutely done he is with the institution. 2 midterms, 1 final, final replaces midterm, and approx 10 homeworks. R-coding part of this class isn't too bad after you get through hw 1 and 2. Go to lectures in person, and you'll do fine in the class.
WE LOVE BISSELL. I'll admit I didn't have a great start to his class but he's so caring and good at what he does it all ended up working out towards the end. I think 1/3 of the class ended with an A which should tell you how amazing he is. R coding sucks but you'll get through it. Worst part is the TA's (super useless)
only seems to care about the people that can get an A in the class, tests are hard, material is confusing, he can be confusing and rambles a lot during lectures, no curve/rounding/changing grade cutoffs whatsoever, teaches fast
Bombed first MT which ended up being okay because he replaces both MT grades with your final if you do better. He's a good lecturer, especially for 8am. I really liked his grading policies - I mean overall just great prof
Micheal is an absolute beast. He is an amazing and supportive teacher. The class is test heavy; consisting of two midterms and a final… and there's not many other assignments that contribute to your grade. But his lectures are great; i'd SUPER recommend going to his personal office hours. Couldn't recommend him enough.
Dr. Bissell is an effective lecturer, can go fast but he covers material in great detail. I'm not a premed student but found his exams simple and fair if you pay attention to homework concepts and lecture. Only gripe is he's a bit snappy on Piazza, I once asked about clarifying a value on the HW and he made it seem like I was using Chegg to cheat.
Very clear and to the point. He doesn't put any "trick questions" on the exams and is straightforward with what you should expect on the exam. Also has lots of materials for practice between lectures, discussion sheets, and homework sets. If you have to take STA 100, I highly recommend taking it with this professor.
