Best professor at McGill!!
Great to listen to; but hard marker; cat is great!
piewacket (his cat) is lovely :D he is one of McGill's best professors
excellent! classes are really entertaining!
Awesome prof...hard stuff, but definitely a challenge and worth the time
Interesting enthusiastic, props are always fun. funny guy
One of the best teachers, overall, I ever had at McGill. Fascinating subject too.
Awesome, awesome. prof. He made me want to be an archaeologist, then I changed my mind once I took Trigger's class (req). He can make his own stone tools! If you study hard, you can ace the class. He's perhaps the best prof I had at McGill.
Prof Bisson is great, he makes note taking in lectures VERY easy with his overheads. Exams are fair I have my lab with him also, he is very interesting to talk to and just easy to learn from. I'm glad I registered for class with him next semester
One of the best profs I ever had. He's cool (he brought his cat once to class, and loves 2001: A Space Odyssey!), approachable, and funny. Lectures are clear, informative, and engaging. A fair grader, too. The only drawback is his messy handwriting!
Hes a great teacher, if you go to class and study you'll get a good grade!
Good prof; you can tell he's really enthusiastic about his class and loves to teach. The only complaint I have is that the exams, the mid-term in particular, are very detail-oriented and require memorization rather than understanding. Otherwise great.
Good class and great prof but the lab assignment/paper was way too demanding for what it was worth. I learned a lot though.
Likely the best class I've taken. He's a very engaging speaker with a great sense of humor. I've never known someone so intelligent that was so cool about it. His exams and grading are very fair. But, word to the wise, start early on the lab exercise!
Very nice man and extremely passionate about his work. He cares about his students too. He's a strict marker and the lab excercise is extremely demanding, but if you're willing to work hard you can learn a ton from this man.
Mike Bisson is an engaging and brilliant professor. He is so knowledgable that you cant help yourself from learning from him. He has a good sense of humour (he refers to south park and the simpsons on occasion!) Fantastic professor - highly recommended.
Most amazing professor, very passionate about work, and incredibly funny and interesting. The one class I always woke up for, even when it was -40 C.
almost failed. final exams are way too trivia. so HARD! visualization not so great.
PROJECT IS SO HARD!if this was the only course i was taking then i would have enjoyed doing the project but there is not enough time to work on it. The course is very interesting because Bison is so passionate,i would suggest the course in a second is there wasn't that stupid project to do!
Professor Nisson was the best professor I had in my entire university education. He was interesting, attentive, always there to help and always pleasant. He taught so many wonderful things about so many different subjects in the field.
I'm not sure what everyone was raving about-- I found this class very dry and difficult. I would recommend this to anyone who had a prior interest in archaeology, but not for anyone who just wants to "try it out." And honestly, who doesnt think all the stone tools look like rocks?
Excellent Prof. Really great lecturer. Final paper is waaayyyyy too much work for what it's worth and is extremely difficult. Tough grading.
hardest class ever. interesting, but hard and WAY too much stuff to know. Kinda expects you to think like an archeologist/anthropologist comming into the course. Take this course only if you have to, or you WILL fail
I agree with the previous post. Don't take him unless you already know a lot about archelogy, otherwise you'll need a miracle to pass. He's a great lecturer, though, and you'll learn a lot from the course, but it's just too costly to your GPA.
This was a great course. Expect to work hard in this class. I learned the most with him this semester and the work was worth it.
Prof. Bisson is an excellent lecturer. Love his sense of humour and his CRAAAZY archaeologist anecdotes. The class IS hard, and it's a lot of work and reading. But it's worth it. You will learn a lot, and you will love it. Bisson's lab exercise was my absolute favourite project in a long while.
I love him: really dedicated to his work and interesting lecturer. Love how he mentions his work in Zambia every single class and his adorable jokes. I had previous experience in Archaeology and still got a crappy mark, but I would still take it again. The lab report is murder!
He is a sweet man and his lectures are very easy to follow, but the course was too technical for my liking, and the lab exercise was horrifying. I took it out of interest, and I did alright in the course, but at the cost of my sanity.
Okay. The course code involves the numbers 201. This is like a 400 level course in terms of what the prof expects of you. Interesting material and a great lecturer who loves what he's teaching; worth taking as an S/U course lest you feel like ruining your GPA beyond repair.
YEAH, i love him. the only problem is that there is a LOT of material. Take this class if you like a challenge.
This is the second class I've taken of Prof. Bisson's and I'm going to take all of the classes he teaches. This man is so interesting and talented. Not only is he extremely smart, his lectures are interesting and he is very approachable. As they say "don't leave McGill without taking this class!"
I loved this class! It was hard on the tests, but I always love a teacher who loves what he does. It's fascinating to listen to him, and that cat he brings to class is adorable. The topic too can be boring, but he doesnt make it seem that way. Two thumbs up.
Science students will be turned on to this class if they feel they want to take an Arts clas. Human Evolution is quite sciency and requires memorization. Tests are tough; TAs are rockin' but he repeats midterm questions and final isn't too bad if you've looked at previous ones. Good class.
One of the best profs I've ever had. I didn't miss a single class the entire semester because he lectured so well. Course is difficult, but absolutely fascinating, and the lab gives such a good insight into lecture material. Well worth your time to take this course.
Great lecturer, but if you care about your GPA, do NOT take his class unless it's pass/fail. You learn alot, but coming out of the term after his class makes you feel like and idiot and a failure, especially for an arts student. He's brilliant, but too demanding for a 200-level course.
Love him. I just love him. You can tell when someone is passionate about what they do - and he is. He's a genius, an expert, and he's still madly in love with everything he lectures about and everything he does. I go out of the class loving life. Seriously. It's hard; it's worth it.
Hard class, but Bisson is a great prof. I'm in my last year and it's still the best class I've taken.
How can you not love this prof? He is clear, nice and always smiling. However the lab exercise was horrible, and the exams were quite difficult (you have to know every single detail from your notes and you also have to know the text books well). Too difficult for a 200 class but I would recommend it anyway.
Very good lecturer and the material is really interesting. Exams do go quite a bit in detail, but it's really the lab exercise that's hard (start it WAY in advance, the appendix is probably gonna be a lot longer than you think). However, he's a fair marker and I love the class. Challenging, but I'd recommend it.
Probably my favorite prof. Good educator and such a nice, down to earth kinda guy. The course ain't easy, but it's quite interesting.
He was a very good lecturer. Old school a bit with the scribbling on the overhead but very intresting and funny, making his students want to attend the class! One of the good teachers I had so far. Also very helpful during his office hours. Try to take the conference with him rather than with the TAs.
This class has been one of my favorite classes at McGill so far! His lectures are interesting (I attended almost every one!) and he's adorable in an old-school kinda way. If you take the labs with him, you'll understand the material a LOT better because he loves explaining stuff to you. Absolutely love him
One of my favorite profs so far. He talks to his students as if he's talking to his equals, something that is very rare. He's been teaching the class for a long time, and working in the field, so he always has good anecdotes that make the class worth going to. For example, if in africa, don't go near the water. Going to miss this class.
Great teacher, he really knows his stuff. Yes he is demanding, you can't pass his exams by just sifting through notes, you actually have to study. The lab paper is hard but really fun. If you actually study you can do very well in this class.
I wasnt that interested in the material prior to the couse, but I took it because its a pre-req for a lot of the good courses. Turns out I LOVE IT! He will work you, but ts really fun work where you learn a lot. He treats u like an equal and is clear and logical. He is absolutely brilliant and very inspiring. I recommend this prof/ course for sure!
Great prof. Knows his stuff. Works extremely hard for his students and expects them to work really hard in return! Don't expect a good grade. My only problem was that he knows his stuff SO well that he's not always coherent... he just keeps talking and talking about technical stuff. Hasn't adapted to powerpoint notes yet(but maybe that's good)
This class is so hard, but he's such a great teacher! He's very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches, he explains things very well. But there's so much material to know for the exams, and so much work for the lab excerise!
This class is so hard, but he's such a great teacher! He's very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches, he explains things very well. But there's so much material to know for the exams, and so much work for the lab excerise!
Amazing professor, one of the smartest people I've ever met. Extremely helpful and amazing lecturer. Despite this, I didn't go to lectures because they were too early, still did well in the class by listening to lectures online. Not as hard as people say it is, just study a lot. Lab paper is a lot of work though...
Great prof, who clearly is both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. This course isn't that hard, provided you start the paper early and focus on the posted lecture notes for exams. The textbook is kind of of waste of time.
Lab Exercise caused me to loose my mind and took the focus away from my other class work, job, social life. Very hard class, way beyond the 200 level, requires enourmous dedication and very time consuming. Good prof, kind man but wouldnt recommend this course unless archaeology is your passion. Exams also very difficult, detail oriented.Be forwarne
Mike Bisson is the best teacher I've ever had! His class isn't always easy, but he's so interesting and knowledgeable it's worth it. Very few other profs will do things like hold spear-throwing lessons after class!
Prof. Bisson is one of the best professors I've ever had. His classes are fascinating and his enthusiasm and devotion to the subject is contagious.
The most inspiring professor I've ever had. He loves what he does so much, he makes you want to be that passionate about your career. His classes are no walk in the park but study enough and put some effort into the paper and you will be golden. I loved him!
Definitely not a class that I'd recommend for first year students, unless you're the sort that enjoys writing lab reports that take 75h in 2 weeks. I'm U1 and the U3s I talked to claimed that Bisson was hella difficult. Good proff though, very exciting.
Great Professor! Certainly not an easy class, but this guy totally made it worth it! He's sweet, approachable, and totally knows his stuff. Mid-Term and Final were pretty tricky, and the lab paper was tough to figure out. I still recommend the class though!
Loved this professor! Super sweet and really intelligent in his field. Neither the mid-term nor the final were easy, but manageable! Definitely a recommended class
Excellent motivator, tough class, but always there to help when you need him.
Great Prof but really difficult course. Way to much work for a 200 level.
Super hard class for a 200 level!!! But he is so in to what he says that you become interested in what he says. He is really helpful when you go to his office and end up spending an hour listen to how he come face to face with some lion.
He can be a little intimidating one on one, but he is a great lecture-er. They are funny, interesting, relevant and well organized. He is challenging, but not unreasonably so.
Amazing prof. Super passionate about his field and incredibly knowledgeable. I didn't miss a single class. The tests are hard and the paper is huge, but he grades on a curve. I would definitely take another class from him again. Highly recommend it!
Alright now, the exams are really hard, but good thing is its not a multiple. Hes really helpful and honestly does care about your performance. Plus hes TAs are great so you have plenty resources to go through if you have trouble. Exams are based mostly on slides!!!
Interesting prof. The exams are difficult, but if you do ALL the readings and study (pay attention to detail), you should be fine. Labs can be a bit intimidating at first, but with the course pack and paying close attention, there's all you need to know. I find this class requires alot of focus, but it will definetely pay off in the end.
Fantastic prof. So helpful and loves what he does. Has amazing stories! Exams are hard but well worth it and fair.
Great class, and amazing prof. The paper you will write for this class is hard, and requires a lot of time - start it early! Overall a great course.
Amazing lecturers. He loves to answers questions and he is always ready to clarify concepts. The labs are extremely interesting as you get to really see and touch what you've covered in class. If you do the readings and take good notes, you'll get a good mark for sure.
Great lecturer but this class is very hard!! Exams are challenging and SO much material - lots of memorization.
Great guy who really loves what he teaches. Super nerdy, but in an awesome way. Although the course is hard, he makes the material really interesting. Worth taking ANTH 201 because of him.
Really amazing prof--he is, besides incredibly intelligent, super passionate about the material and conveys this through his lectures. The class is difficult, but definitely worthwhile.
He is very passionate about what he teaches, and the classes aren't incredibly boring, but I would not recommend this for someone looking for an elective. This class wasn't really worth my time, and although I worked very hard - the exams (short answer/essay format) were extremely difficult .
Great teacher but very very difficult. I took his class as an elective and I might just fail. Mostly my fault though.
I've taken 201/203/347 with this man, and he is simply amazing. He knows his stuff, is almost literally always in his office, and answers e-mails quickl. For 201 and 203, his TAs have been with him for years and really know their stuff. Definitely not bird courses, but so so so worth taking if you have any interest!!
This is not an exaggeration: he is the greatest professor at McGill.
Thought I would major in Archaeology before this class - most boring class I've ever taken. I RECOMMEND NOT TAKING THIS CLASS BASED ON THE IMPOSSIBLE TERM PAPER ALONE!!! I have never done so much work for a paper in my life. Class is boring, Bisson is into it and a great guy but extremely tedious lecturer. Was going to fail the final so I withdrew.
He is really knowledgeable but he is really really tough. If you're planning on taking him do not take a full course load. Not an easy elective so stay away if that's what you're looking for.
Professor Bisson is a clear, understanding, gently funny teacher. Although this class was not entirely what I expected (particularly the very difficult evaluations), the experience was still very enjoyable. Tip: if you have any concerns about anything, bring them up with him; he is very committed to helping his students understand the material.
At last we meet, M. Bisson, legend of Street Fighter II.
Very good lecturer, but there's so much information to know...to the point where it feels beyond overwhelming to study for his exams, which are brutal -- the paper is also extremely tedious
Such a great prof. Probably one of the best at McGill. He loves what he does. But very, very difficult class. The term paper is nearly impossible. I don't recommend as an elective. On the plus side, he did bring his cat to a lecture. :)
He definitely is the best professor at McGill.
The two courses I took with him in first year are still probably the best, most thoroughly informative courses I have taken to date (I am almost finished forth year).
Amazing prof, great class. This is NOT a bird course, and the paper was incredibly difficult, but well worth it. He's a fair grader and honestly wants everyone to do well. Uses the whole text book and course pack, so do the readings!!
He was really interesting, and loved the subject.
Nice, interesting, funy but HARD, HARD, HARD!
Really knows his stuff, but does not take the time to help students that struggle through the material. Additionally, content is boring and is not presented in an interesting manner. Professor Bisson's exams are very challenging (especially for arts students with no background in human anatomy). Turned me off archeological anthropology.
This was my favourite class. His exams are HARD but it's because you quite literally have to know everything in the slideshows, readings, and what he says, but he's really into the topic. I learned a LOT.
Best prof I've ever had. If you never got the chance to be taught by him, drop by his new office and ask him about archaeology. Be ready to be there for a while though.
best class i have ever taken at Mcgill !
