Intro to global studies- not that bad of a class, bowler's a little strange, but don't really need to come to class, a few minor papers--easy A.
Professor Bowler is fantastic. There is a large amount of reading, but it's not hard. Great Professor
He is one of the best teachers I've ever had!!!! You should take his class if you need to take any politics' class and need As!
he is a nice teacher, but the way he teaches is not good. he does a lot of stupid group work during class, which is pointless. his tests have nothing to do with what we learn in class...avoid if possible
The lectures are a bit boring, but as long as you show up to class, you shouldn't have a problem. If you have any experience in Poli Sci, you don't even have to read very much.
SUPER boring lectures! Just read the book and show up to class every once in a while- solid B. The only thing that really gets annoying is that he'll keep you 3-5 mins after class time is up EVERY DAY! It's an ok class- just bring a pillow...
He is super nice! His class isn't hard, but if u get any problems, he will always be so helpful. the tests ain't hard at all, too if u read the book. tests are all multiple choice!

Real good guy. Solid B if you apply yourself somewhat, easy A if you do everything. Very helpful if you talk to him
An awesome prof! He's very nice and extremely easy to talk to. I'd recommend his classes any day!
Very nice professor. A lot of reading but interesting topics covered in class. Discussion class with three tests. If you do most of the work, no problem getting an A.
He is a great professor and one of my favorites. He is very knowledgeable and shows a lot of videos. There is a lot of reading, but it is not long and is interesting. This class forces you to think outside our usual realm and look at the whole picture.
Very boring lectures but the class was easy. Slight odd teacher.
His me most favorite! so nice and the class was pretty easy. he's so helpful to anybody. reccomand to take this class!
sometimes boring lectures, but overall easy. lots of reading and he picks the smallest details for tests. talk in class. at the time didn't feel like i was learning anything new, but now i realize i did more than i thought. interesting topics.
boring class but really easy
TERRIBLE
very nice
Wonderful teacher, and is open to your opinion. During class, prepare yourself for questions because he asks many and waits for your responses. Its a good class, and provides an easy A if you apply yourself and participate.
Good prof. The class is easy and do good on essays if you do the readings.
a painful class to sit through unless you are incredibly excited with globalization and international issues. 3 evaluations and a news report. not bad to fil a university stuides requirement.
He was terrible and I don't believe he was open to my opinion AT ALL!! I think he made my global outlook worse because he made me cynical, especially towards Bangladesh.
Bowler is CRAZY about his teaching, especially Bangladesh. He has A LOT of into. but is boring as all heck! Bring a labtop or else you'll want to smash your head into the desk out of boredom. His grading is okay but teaching style is pretty bad. I would NOT recommend him.
Ok class, kinda made me like Asia less, He is really unclear on what he wants in essays. He is really obsesed with south asia. boring class dont really learn much useful.
He is boring and unclear. Only thinks that he is right
Just follow directions, do the work, and you'll get an A. Participate in class discussions.
Boo this guy, he sucks!
Super easy class, but I feel like his goal is for us to start hating Americans! He praises every other country, but constantly talks negatively about America. Don't get scared away though. He's a nice guy and very helpful! Easy B
just took this for the gen ed. overall, pretty easy way to fulfill it. just 3 evals, 2 global events, news article "report", and talkin' about an organization. he does take attendance tho, and class is sooooo boring! he's unclear about what he wants in his papers. hopefully you get lucky.
He sucks. You have to write papers that he doesn't explain very well, and he'll give you a grade on them without reason. Expect huge delays in receiving them back as well.
He is very unclear about assignment reuirements and likes to talk in circles a lot. I became very annoyed with the class in general
A nice guy if you're not in class. Smiles a lot. Makes it seem like anything not Asian is bad, while at the same time pushing appreciation of other cultures. Dances around questions, unclear with assignments. Awkward to make eye contact with.
He is a wonderful teacher, he is very enthusiastic about what he is teaching. He always has a positive attitude and genuinely cares about his students
He really gets into the material he is teaching, and like dicussion in the classroom. THe material is actually really interesting. For exams, you can pick a test or paper. My class always chose papers cause we thought it would be easier, but he is really critical on grading them. Go in to see him about them and you'll be fine.
This **** shouldnt even hold the title "Professor." He is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever had in college. His grading system is way out of line and treats his class like a graduate level critical thinking course. Honestly, **** this guy and his material. He should be banned from WSU . **** this dick, DO NOT take his class!
easy class, don't have to put forth too much effort at all. he isn't much help unless you see things his way. and don't miss any of his classes unless you have a real good excuse. he lowers your grade one full letter grade
I loved this class. It's a discussion class with very little hw. We get a say in what is on tests, what kind of test it is, and when it is due. He is a very intelligent teacher. I highly recommend this class!
He acts like he knows it all and that he is the most educated person on cultural encounters. He expects you to read and understand two confusing books. He treats the class like it's a critical thinking course and I think he likes the sound of his own voice. He also expects you know about current events Internationally.
oh GOSH... cultural encounters: Don't take it unless you can sit through hours of rambling about other cultures and HIS own experiences. It's kind of an easy class as far as lack of assignments-- but he's a tough grader on the papers, etc. Stupid project you have to with getting involved with other cultures... Pretty boring to listen to.
What a goon. Just show up to his class and listen to him rabmle on about what he thinks is the most important thing ever. And don't you dare have your own ideas. At any rate, grades really easy, just follow the criteria... I wrote crap in class, but met all the guildlines and did fine.
Great professor! Classes are mainly discussion with very little hw. Just show up to class because attendance is part of your grade. As a class, you decide what type of evaluations you take.(short-answer, m/c, essay, paper) He sets the guidelines (very leniant by the way) all you have to do is meet the criteria and it will be an A, if not, a solid B
Easy class, show up and listen to him talk a lot, watch a few movies. Expects you to write 3 page papers on WAY too much information, and the stuff that you cant fit in he takes points away from the paper. Kind of a lose-lose situation. But if you come close its a easy B.
Great Professor. He is very nice and funny. Easy class. Easy A as long as you go to class and fullfill the requirements. No tests, just papers that you write. Explains things well and doesn't expect too much, but likes to see more students go above and beyond in the interest of the class. I highly recommend this class.
Took it as a summer class--which makes for long class sessions & a lot of reading, but overall not too bad for 4 weeks. Just make sure you show up more than anything. I didn't participate as much as he suggested & got a couple of B's on the papers but still got an A for the class.
UGH!I took this class so that I could be INTRODUCED to global studies, but it is taught as if we should all know it already and should be able to critically analyze all of it!I did learn a lot and no tests, just papers. Make sure to follow the paper prompt EXACTLY! The papers are only 2 pages long, sucks b/c it's hard to fit so much info in 2 pages!
lot of reading and discussion in class, you can either have a test or have essays. you have about 3.
Easy A just show up everyday because he takes attendence. Don't have to do reading assignments everyday and their aren't any tests. You dont have to do anything you just watch videos from u-tube and other things alot of the time. He seems like he really cares about asia and expects you to care just as much as he does. overall I thought the class
not very helpful at all...for prompts he would give for your paper, some would be confusing and you would come in to ask and he would just repeat the prompt over and over again...impossible to know what he is talking about for the paper requirements...class sucked
His paper prompts are very unclear and he is terrible at explaining them. He never responds back to e-mails which is very annoying- and it is horrible listening to him speak. His expectations are very high considering how stupid the class is.
He is the biggest Jerk I have ever met! My friend had a parent die he docked him for everything he missed, which dropped him to a C in the class. Then he graded one of our papers based on requirements he didn't give anyone in the paper prompt. He really is a Jerk, also very arrogant. Overall this is an easy class.
HATED him with a passion. never take. class was mandatory and if it wasnt no one would go because he is so annoying to listen to, he loves talking about himself too too much... super unclear with paper prompts.. hate him. NEVER EVER TAKE
Does not stop talkin, go to visit him for help, plan for an hour. No tests, write papers and speeches in place of tests. He seriously makes stuff up that's not true. You have to read in place of lecture cuz he would rather talk. For papers, doesnt tell you what they should be like just that you didnt do it right, one of worst teachers I've ever had
ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! Didn't learn anything, because he makes it sooooo hard! Papers are impossible, meetings are a joke, and class is not engaging AT ALL!!! Insults you by assuming you are ignorant, young, American college students. Definitely has favorites. DO NOT TAKE if you don't have to!!!
Would't recommend! very unclear about papers and then when he grades them he writes comments saying what it should of had, when in the beginning he didn't even say. grades on how much he likes you as a person and how often you come in to talk to him, not how well you write. when you go see him he talks for an hour. WORST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN!!!!
It was hard to get myself to go to class, I sat on my computer playing games the whole class. He talks about himself and his trip to Bangladesh all the time, and it's soooo uninteresting. The prompts he gives are absolutely ridiculous and very unclear. I took it fall semester, it's spring now, and I don't remember anything we learned.
There is no test, but the papers you have to write are hard and have to be written based entirely on his opinion. All he does is talk about Bangladesh and expects you to care about Bangladesh as much as he does. Boring and useless class.
I honestly think he may hate America. Preaches how horrible Americans are and how terribly we are viewed throughout the world. Although, he believes he is perfectly in tune with the rest of society and is correct about everything. Easy A (I got one) if you can tolerate the America bashing. Sorry bowler, I'm proud of my country.
Honestly, he killed my interest in global studies. Class was a complete joke, and the instructions for the papers were unclear and not what he actually wanted from you. If you can't drop this class, make sure you meet with him so that you actually write about what he wants, and make sure you agree with his opinions or he will give you a bad grade.
He was probably the worst professor that I have had so far. His prompts for papers were nearly incomprehensible, and the vast majority of your grade is based on the papers. He pulled the grade down on one of my papers simply because my ideas were not identical to his. A joke of a professor. A joke of a class. Don't waste your time with it.
Truth be told I don't like this professor. He may say one thing about a topic while 5 minutes later he says the complete opposite of what he said before. His paper topic are extremely broad and he also counters himself about how the paper should be written. I have the feeling many of my classmates would agree with me that he shouldn't teach. At all
He probably shouldn't be allowed to teach. My main problem with the class is that you are encouraged to develop your own opinion on the topics, yet you are penalized if your opinion does not conform to his. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he got fired to balance the school's budget. He is useless.
I was a global studies major before I took this class. I hate this guy. He's very idealistic and does not consider anybody else's opinion as being correct. I actually dropped my major after taking this class. He makes you use at least 6 different references in papers but the papers can only be 3 pages long. He's just a really dumb man.
I was very interest in global studies prior to this class. However I couldnt care less now. He makes no sense and his opinions are all that matter in this class. He always speaks very very slowly and in circles. I would avoid him at all costs. The whole class consists of ambiguous papers that can only be three pages with six sources.Horrible class
This guy is a flaming idiot. The only opinion that matters is his. Complete waste of time!!!!
I disagree with most of the people who have talked about Bowler on this rating site. He may be a more tough teacher for people who are in their first year of college, or for people who are not intelligent. Having said that, he does allow you to have your own opinions, but he asks you to back your opinions up. I definitely recommend him to you.
He's a nice enough buy but his class is really boring. He takes forever to get ready and talks really slow and in circles the whole time. There are no tests but the paper prompts are really confusing and you have to write them more or less for his opinions to get a good grade.
This guy is reckless. 1)He has an extremely creepy pic. on his facebook. 2)He is anti-american 3)Hes EXTREMELY unorganized 4)He is EXTREMELY unwilling to email you back, or meet wth you 5)He is NOT in his office when he says he has office hours. 6)It takes him about 10 years to get your grades back from papers, projects, ect. 7)Hes in <3 Bangladesh
Worst teacher of all time. I hate this man. Whoever said you have to be intelligent to do well in his class obviously didn't take him. I could have slept through the entire thing and still have gotten an A. It was the most painful class I've ever taken, and he's honestly one of the worst people I've ever met.
He's def a strange guy and very annoying, but somewhat funny. If you sit in class and appear to be interested and have somewhat of a strong opinion on something you will get an A. He also has favorites. I barely read anything and got a 98.
This man is one of the worst professors at WSU. All we did was watch movies in class. This class is a waste of money. He is an idiot and doesn't care about anyone else opinion but his own.
This class is completely worthless. He spends a little while setting up while talking about what he's gonna go over for the day, but ends up talking on and on and on about the most worthless junk. He praises the authors as if they were gods (the books suck btw). the paper prompts are stupid and barely readable. I was interested in GS... no more
This class is a joke! Dr. Bowler, although very nice, is not a good teacher. Everything you cover in class is completely bias, especially his teaching. There are no exams, but you have to write a few papers, but you have to write exactly what he wants if you want an A. The only reason I got an A is because I wrote what he wanted to hear.
Pointless class. Watch movies and listen to him ramble all semester long. No tests you have to write papers, which isn't so bad. Talk to him when writing papers to get brownie points and include his ideas.
Worst teacher I have had here at WSU. Terribly opinionated and does not give good guidelines with papers. No tests, papers are your entire grade, and his prompts are way too vague. Also freaks out about attendance, i have missed two classes and had to go talk to him about being absent. Avoid if you can.
Very Opinionated. No tests, but grades papers a little harsh. Go see him for opinions on papers prior to turning them in. Class is boring.
This teacher is a horrible person and a terrible teacher. He stands up in front of the room ranting about things that have no revivance to the class and he grades great papers poorly because they aren't the same as his opinion when their opinion papers. Terrible teacher.
He's Kind of pretentious. He preaches his opinions and thats it. The class is boring as all hell, you sit there while he lectures at you. There are no tests but you do have to write three papers. If you dont write exactly what he wants to hear you're not going to do well.Even after seeing him for my papers, getting his input didn't help
Dropped this class. Way too opinionated for my taste. Didn't need it anyway so it would have been a waste of time to do all the work for what would have probably turned out to be a bad grade.
Teacher really sucks he's boring beyond belief and (unless you're actually interested in global studies)the discussions are impossibly boring to the point where I couldn't focus if I wanted to. Only a few papers and, if done right (definitely need to follow ALL of his guidelines) and it's an easy class.
Class is the worst ... You go for an hour to listen to him rant. You have 3 papers, and he takes forever to grade them. I never went to him once for help and got at the lowest a B on the papers. Easy class, but boring. No final or tests either. That's a plus.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!! I changed my grading scale to pass/no credit to not affect my GPA. Prompts are unhelpful, unclear, and poorly written. Bowler talks about pointless topics, hard grader(he tells the class that the papers are "first draft level". NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!
Horrible professor. Preaches about accepting opinions and ideas of others throughout the world but in reality he only cares about his own opinion. Papers consist of somehow thoroughly breaking down around 5 separate topics in 3 double spaced pages and the best grade you'll get is a B unless you see him and have him write it for you. DON'T TAKE HIM!
He is incredibly full of himself and cares more about telling stories about his life than teaching the class. He took 5 weeks to grade 2-page papers in a class of 20 and assigned our final project (worth 30% of the grade) with a week left in the semester. I would not recommend Bowler to anyone.
I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt, but after going to class and having to do the papers he is unreasonable. He talks as if he is 'right' all of the time. Most of the time I did agree with him, but he still comes off as pompous. Unless you plan on going to visit him to let him rewrite your paper give yourself a C.
Only papers--see him at least 2 times before submitting your paper. You WILL have to conform to his ideas and beliefs to get an A on papers, but if you do see him many times, after you get a grade (usually a month after turning it in) tell him that he said it was an A paper and he will switch your grade. Hard to stomach but easy to get an A.
Cultural encounters was overall an easy class, we wrote 3 papers and that was the whole semester. Really interesting in class discussions and if you don't engage in the conversation he most likely won't learn your name! And if he knows you're name you'll probably end with an A.
The one class I regret taking. He's extremely disorganized, posts assignments sometimes 2 hours before class, and has very unclear expectations of students. The whole class was pretty abstract including the textbook, but still. Half the syllabus we didn't actually go through. If you disagree with his opinion - well let's say you'd better not
He posts assignment super late, acts like it is the only class you are taking, doesn't teach you anything in class, just rambles on and on and on, criteria isn't clear, what the hell are we supposed to be studying? If your opinion doesn't match his, good luck.
There are no tests, but the papers make up 60% of your grade. The prompts are so vague, and you can only use the sources that he gives you. Prepare to be forced conform to his opinions, not learn a thing, and get really frustrated on a regular basis if you take this class.
His lectures relate to nothing you are supposed to be learning about, we wrote 3 papers and the assignment sheet was extremely vague. If you don't agree with his opinion you won't pass the class. We he grades your papers he completely rips your paper apart and basically tells you how you need to go back to high school
He is not helpful at all. My entire class talks about how horrible or a professor he is every day before class. He has made so many students cry. He will bash all of your work and make you feel like a complete failure no matter how good your work is. His lectures are pointless and completely off topic. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM IF POSSIBLE.
Very unclear with expectations, 60% of your grade is off of three papers that he is very unclear with criteria. Lectures are very boring and usually you don't anything out of but he does take attendance. He constantly undermines your work if its not exactly what he had in mind even calling all my papers "first draft quality".
Worst teacher I've had in college so far. When I get to class students talk about how dumb he is until he walks into class at least 5 minutes late everyday. Never mentions anything specific about papers then gives harsh grades and if your opinion doesn't agree word for word with his you're done for. Rambles to himself and shows youtube videos.
I dont want to sound rude, but Dr. Bowler is one of the worst, if not the worst professor Ive had. He is very critical and not in a helpful way. If you dont agree with his opinion, you're wrong according to him. He is a very harsh grader. His directions for papers are very unclear. He is disrespectful of students work and thoughts. DO NOT TAKE
Doesn't give specific guidelines for papers. Just pretty much gives you 1 verbal sentence of expectation, then fails everyone, then lectures the class for having "terrible papers". Interrupts students when they try to speak and he disagrees with them. If he doesn't like you, everything you say is wrong. You won't learn anything if you take him.
he is not one of my favorite professors. he is always late to class. during class he gets off topic a lot. he submits the homework on d2l late. expect to do have to do the d2l homework every night before class. the rubric for paper is super vague, and he is a really hard grader. you need to agree with his opinion if you want to pass this class.
Professor Bowler taught a fairly easy class, no tests or any quizzes, only three major papers which was really nice. He gives you plenty of time on papers, but class isn't mandatory.
Professor Bowler is unprofessional and unclear. He does not feel the need to take students opinions and questions seriously. He is very vague on his expectations however, expects the outcome of your work to be incredibly specific. He is unapproachable and know going into the class your questions and comments are not welcomed.
This teacher can be best summarized by his vague prompts on papers. He then asks you to take this vague prompt and create an extremely specific solution using only the sources he vets as viable. This teacher loves the sound of his own voice, if you wish to make him happy never ask a question and write your papers re stating his opinions. DONT TAKE
I cannot believe that Dr. Bowler is a college professor. A diabetic cat would be more helpful. He is extremely unclear about what he wants students to do, and he does not follow the syllabus. He did not grade some of my assignments from the first week of class until December. He uses class time terribly, but fails you if you miss more than twice.
DO NOT take this class! You will be assigned 3 papers throughout the semester and coursework on D2L every night. Even though you have assignments every night you won't receive grades until the week of finals, if that. You are also not allowed to have an opinion whether papers or assignments and if you do not agree with him you are bound to fail.
Worst teacher I've ever had. He is a very tough grader and is very boring. I thought this class would be interesting but he completely ruined it for me. I would NOT recommend him at all.
Bowler comes off as a really harsh professor. If you stick to the class, attend and GO SEE HIM about the papers (at least twice/paper) you'll be fine. There is no tests but three papers which are hard to ace. The professor actually seems very smart and he wants to help the students on his office hours.
Talks about pointless bs the whole hour. Don't learn anything. Bad grade on papers if he doesn't agree with you.
Dr. Bowler seemed like he would be an OK professor at first, however we soon learned that is not true. Expect to sit in class and listen to him talk about his opinions the whole time. Rambles for the entire class and doesn't help us learn anything. There are 3 papers due throughout the whole semester which is what your grade is based on.
AVOID PROF BOWLER AT ALL COSTS. I tend to think of myself as a good student. 3.8 college GPA. That being said take this rate for real. No set lecture. He just rambles on with no point. Extremely biased and will only accept his own thinking. Haven't actually learned anything. Major grade is form papers that must be done his way or trash it.
He is very specific on the answers he wants. He is very opinionated and very bias. His opinion is the only right opinion and he is very closed off against other's opinions. He is cocky and not caring towards his students however, this class is pretty easy. There's 3 paper which you write and no tests. Your grade is based off papers you write.
This class seemed like it would be interesting when registering for it. I honestly don't know why he is a professor, he's terrible. You never know what you are doing for the day because he talks about whatever he wants. He will give you a bad grade if you do not agree with his views. Very liberal. Talks about Bangladesh a lot. Do not take him.
If you email him he won't respond. Super boring class and he grades certain things and doesn't grade other things.
Hands down the most boring class I've ever taken. He talks about random things for 50 minutes. You can hardly understand what he says half the time, and his stomach is always hanging out of his shirt. The papers he has you write are so hard to understand and he grades your opinion based on his opinion so if they don't match then good luck.
Bowler is truly the worst professor I have ever had. Your grade is based off of 3 papers, and even though that sounds easy, he is extremely unclear on what he wants. If you do not agree with him, you will not receive a good grade. Impossible to talk too, and is not understanding. He rambles on during class or shows you videos. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
Dr. Bowler didn't respond to most of my emails. When he gave feedback on one assignment regarding my opinion he basically said I was wrong and gave me a C. He was hard to follow sometimes and I was often unsure of what he was wanting from his students. Kind of the nutty professor type. Not horrible just unclear.
Honestly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Waste of time. Every class is him blabbing on and on about random subjects that magically pop into his brain. Asks a lot of questions and if you don't have the same opinion as he does he makes you feel like an idiot. Grades you 100% and then marks it down at end of semester. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!
Lectures were not about anything related to the class (barely at least). Then the paper topics were so vague and every time you ask for clarification it just gets more confusing. No one knows what he wants. He seems passionate about the subject and everything, he just shouldn't teach it.
I didn't really learn anything about global studies in this class, all he does is speak his own opinion about certain topics for 50 minutes. We'll be almost done with class and he'll say, "Oh and one more thing..." constantly new, boring things for him to 'talk' about. The papers you write are opinion based, there is no clear grade rubric for them
For an online class, Professor Bowler made you work for your grade. Some parts were easy, like posting to the discussion board for assignments. The whole 3 paper thing still holds true like people said. He's terrible about checking email and being concise with his syllabus. Paper prompts are very vague and too short to make them how he wants them.
Consistently belittles students, he cuts off and talks over students in class, very inconsistant with answering emails, and His prompts and grading criteria are vague at best. If you go into his office to get help with a paper you'll be lucky if he reads more than paragraph before giving you the same generic speach he gave you in class.
This professor is terrible. I have learned absolutely nothing from his class. Everyday he talked about complete different subject and would assign homework on a whole other topic. Lots of homework every other night. You have to go to outside global events and present it. Only good thing about the class is there are no test, only 3 papers.
Worst professor I have ever had!!!!! I had him two years ago and whenever I see him on campus i want to go up to him and tell him HE IS THE WORST. DO NOT TAKE CLASS. I would go to him class multiple times for each paper and go to the writing lab and I would still get a C. He would send us recordings of his voice talking about how awful we are.
The material you learn is very interesting, but the lectures are a drag. Everything that you learn is in the book you read. The lectures are just him talking about himself and random events that are somewhat related to global studies. There are three papers that are worth most of your grade. Make sure you see him during office hours for your paper!
His classes have absolutely no structure, he rambles on the entire time about nonsense. He makes 3 assignments due online on D2L 3 times a week before class, and attendance is graded. There are 3 papers due for the semester, and his guidelines are stupid and make no sense. Impossible to get an A. DON'T take him as a professor, it is not worth it.
Professor Bowler is a fine guy, but very boring. The class is pretty easy, only really graded on 3 papers. Good amount of reading and usually a assignemnt is due before every class. The class is taught in his opinions and you will not like if you are not liberal. Class is so boring but all he does is talk and ramble on. He is a drag. Do not take!
Dr Bowler is a great guy if you get on his good side. But, he isn't the best professor. He isn't very straightforward when it comes to assignments and makes understanding the essays that we write impossible. There isn't a lot of homework and its an easy class but even if you do the homework but dont go to class he fails you for the day. Dont take
Just So bad
So far we are gettings toward midterms, and I have yet to tell you one thing I have learned so far in this class. His questions are incomprehensible and your answers will not be correct if they don't aline with his opinion. He likes to flex that he's been too many other countries each class period, and just rambles on about anything other than GS.
I would not recommend Professor Bowler at all. His class is the most boring class I have taken so far. He likes to drag topics on, ask open-ended questions that only have one right answer (HIS opinion). If you do not agree with his views in D2L discussion posts, he will dock points. He docks points on EVERY assignment, will not give full credit.
I generally get along with my professors. I average As and Bs and consider myself a hard worker. That being said, I've taken three classes with Professor Bowler, and I can't implore you enough to not take a class with him. He never comes to class prepared, is almost always late, and demands professionalism when he doesn't follow such standards.
If you have the option to not take his class, DO NOT. I repeat, DO NOT take his class. I passed with a B+ but he was the worst professor I have ever had. A lot of his class was based around politics and his political views which I thought was very unprofessional. If he disagreed with your opinion, he gave you an F or very low score. 0/5 if I could.
Rarely shows up prepared for class. Seems to decide during class what videos he would like to teach about that day. His guide lines are very unclear, with vague paper prompts and improper grammar. Only wants to hear his opinion expressed in discussions and papers. If you are going to take this as a goal class don't waste your time or your GPA.
Only thing we talked about in class were his opinions. Only thing I learned is climate change is real and he has gone to Bangladesh. Terrible.
I would strongly not recommend this class to anyone. I took it as a goal class and it ended up being my least favorite class to go to. The lectures are mandatory and I honestly feel like it's mandatory because if attendance was optional that no one would go. The class is graded off the D2L discussion posts and 3 essays...
The class is basically graded on three papers and countless discussion posts The discussions get very repetitive and if you miss class or forget to post, your grade takes a big hit. Prof. Bowler is very opinionated and lectures are boring. Don't take this class unless you have to. If you're unlucky enough to take it, try and get on his good side.
Unclear directions with assignments, contradicts his own directions a lot so you're not sure what he wants. Can be very rude. He will fail you if you miss more than 3 classes. His class is rather disjointed and it feels like sometimes he's not very prepared. I enjoyed the content of this class, but felt like I did most of the learning on my own.
Professor Bowler is an interesting dude. Not very nice, and is not flexible at all. There are only two papers you have to write, but there's a couple of presentations for the class as well. Spent all of the classes talking about himself and putting students down. Pretty easy to get a good grade, but he will be mean in the process of it.
Professor Bowler is not a good professor. I took his global studies class to reach 2 of my goals. Hes one of the most boring and monotone teachers ever. Hes a stickler about attendance and getting assignments done on time (his words). I regret taking the class and it was a waste of time. I didnt learn anything interesting.
This professor let most of our grade rely on two essays. This might be alright but the criteria for these essays was broad and confusing yet he expected something very specific from students. When asked for feedback the feedback given was confusing, unhelpful and contradictory to itself. I should've just taken a language course.
Professor Bowler focuses on interesting things happening in the world! I think he truly cares about his students, and provides helpful feedback. You have two essays that count for most of your grade, but he is very helpful setting them up. I would definitely take another class with him.
Do not listen to his advice on writing, it is all terrible. Do listen to it to the extent of your grade and nothing else because he gives horrendous writing advice. If you don't understand something, he will hate you. I am a writing major and I have to tell you this, he is a terrible writer. Do not go to him for advice. He is terrible.
This professor is great in theory. However, if you miss more than three lectures, a little late to the final meeting, don't do one of the larger things for this course (paper, presentation) - he WILL fail you no matter what your grade point average is. He claims he cares about mental health but is attempting to fail me for mine. Stay clear
Professor Bowler is one of the most condescending, negative, and ruthless people I have ever worked with. I would not recommend this class, and try to avoid him as a professor at all costs. He acts as though he cares about his student, but I am not convinced he does. Absolute worst.
I took global studies as a general class. He talks at us and very monotone. openly talks about his political values and the grades you down if you show different views than his. Avoid at all costs. Attendance is mandatory and counts towards your grade because if it was optional no one would show up. discussion posts with readings due every class
AWFUL professor, unprepared for class, extremely condescending, got frustrated with students when confused about the reading or assignments due to his unclear instructions. He would ask for students answers for a question but nothing seemed to be correct for him. Had a few Asian American students in my class but acted like he knew more than them.
If you can avoid Professor Bowler, please do by all means necessary. His lectures never make sense and neither do his assignments or paper prompts. He claims to be supportive of mental health as well as an "easy grader" but he is lying. The feedback on papers is never helpful. If you don't conform to his instructions good luck getting a good grade.
This is the most degrading and humiliating professor I have ever had. Talks down to all of his students and embarrasses them in front of the whole class. Entire class grade is based off of short discussion posts and three papers. Grades papers with absolutely no logical basis and gives feedback that is repetitive and makes very little sense.
Something rubs you the wrong way about an old white man lecturing you on different cultures, even when you try to give insight on your own culture he'll tell you it's wrong and he's right. His papers make zero sense, don't bother going to the writing center for this class, I tried and Bowler said it was completely wrong. Easy to get a good grade.
He is a very nice man but he does not really care about individuals. He has discussions due after every class and he is very specific on his feedback which most of the time is not helpful. He has 3 papers due for the course and they are worth most of your grade and he is very little help and does not elaborate on what he wants. Confusing but nice.
Michael Bowler was the worst professor or teacher I've every had, and I'm not trying to be dramatic. The main reason was because he was very disrespectful to me and my classmates when we asked for help. He made me feel horrible about myself simply because I didn't understand what I was supposed to write about for the main papers.
Bowler's obviously a man who cares about the topic, but that's translated poorly, especially in how vague he is, both generally and especially with feedback. He spends most of the time talking AT you rather than talking TO you, which is especially discouraging when more often than not, he talks and talks at length without saying anything of note.
talks a lot but doesnt say anything
He cares about the subject but isn't a good teacher. He is extremely unclear with grading expectations. This entire semester I didn't learn one thing. All he lectured about was COVID and the invasion of Ukraine...not one bit of curriculum was used. He calls people out for not wearing a mask or not being vaccinated. You can miss 3 classes.
No good feedback on papers. If you ask a question, he'll dance around it but never give a direct answer. His idea of a thesis statement was strict. I lost points on a day where we only watched a video!? Lectures are insanely boring. Will ask questions we'd have no idea what the answer is because we never discussed it. Do not recommend him!
I would strongly stay away from professor Bowler's classes. Global studies could have been an interesting topic of study but Bowler ruined it. He is very rude, inconsiderate and boring. I do not recommend- by far my worst teacher at Winona State.
Professor Bowler comes off rather condescending and it is difficult to listen to him speak for an hour and a half. He frequently asks random questions and then acts disappointed nobody knew the random fact he was thinking about. He expects students to be experts on all world history and culture which means class is very awkward when nobody knows
Professor Bowler is extremely hard to understand and if you do not agree with his viewpoints then you will not pass the class. Even if you go to the writing center with papers, it still won't be up to his standards. The book he makes you get has extremely liberal point of views. He completely changed globalization into something of his own.
He's extremely rude, he recommends the writing center an then contradicts what they say. He has told one girl in my class that she "Writes like a high schooler" she's a freshman. She told another girl that "Because you're white you have more resources available to you and you should use that to your advantage". Very rude.
I would not recommend this professor, as others are saying he can be rude, and is very confusing. He just talks about random stuff that he expects you to understand, and then if you ask him a question he'll get mad, and tel you to pay attention in class. He once told someone in my class that it was not okay that she hasn't taken English 111.
Horrible professor. Very rude and has some events in replace of his classes that are mandatory but they won't be at the same time as his class and he will argue with you about why you cannot attend. Very very rude and disrespectful. Makes it an everyday point that he played hockey at Notre Dame. I strongly do not recommend his as a professor at all
Awful professor. Told us our papers were useless. But never explained why. Was never understanding about being sick.
He doesn't really explain his lectures well, he talks more than he teaches which leads you to be confused. He had something due every day you came to class and the readings where confusing and tough... he will call you out in his own ways which I hated... my grade drop almost 2 letters because I missed an on campus event that he wanted us to attend.
Papers make no sense because he structures them centered around his own interests. Zero say in what you write and have to struggle through trying to write on a subject you don't care about. Very selfish and will always tell you your thesis is bad because he already knows what he wants it to be. So specific you can never get it right. BAD PROFESSOR
If you are interested in pursuing a GS major, try to avoid taking his classes - it will ruin the experience and learning. Try to take as many classes as you can with the other professors in the department instead, as they provide a much better experience and environment for learning. Don't take his advice on papers to other classes - you will fail
So many negative things to say about him. First, he's incredibly boring to listen to and every day of class is exactly the same. He's very unclear about his expectations for papers and grading expectations, he contradicts himself daily. If you don't come to his office hours, he will email your advisor instead of emailing you. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
He is honestly the worst professor that I have ever had. He talks so much yet you will leave feeling confused af. He doesn't give clear instructions about essays even when you go in for help. He is so bi-polar about what he wants you to do too. If you want to take an easy generals course DO NOT take his classes.
His lectures were very unengaging and boring. He talks a lot without saying anything of importance. His instructions were often unclear on daily discussions and on the paper prompts.
Terrible. If you are someone who gets A's regularly, get ready to become a C student. He refuses to give 90 or higher because 'It could always be better'. He gives very vague details for the discussion questions, and then shame you in the feedback if you don't do exactly what he is expecting you to do. If you can avoid it, don't take him.
Expects us to know more then we get taught
Don't take his class.
Michael Bowler is the rudest teacher I have ever had. He is unsympathetic and is manipulative with words and mannerisms. He pushed his own viewpoints and consistently talked over people, even if you knew what you were talking about. Somehow knows everything and expects you to know everything in history and politics. Papers are impossible.
Professor Bowler has an odd style of teaching. It's very lecture heavy but he tries to make the material relate to you. It can be very dry at times, but can have some moments of levity throughout each session. The classes feel long, but there is not much homework which is great. There are 3 big papers for every class he teaches.
Professor Bowler's class is challenging, but Unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool. The lectures focus on current events, not the curriculum. Attendance is mandatory, but you can miss 3 classes. Overall, it's best to avoid this class if possible.
Not a helpful professor. Degraded your questions and viewpoints oven though this was a very opinion centered class. Would avoid if possible but it is doable with some work.
He is by far the most anger inducing professor I have ever had. If you happen to have a different opinion then him, buckle up, because he will make sure you feel like you don't know anything, and don't think you'll get an A, he doesn't grade anything higher than a 90%. He really lowers your confidence in yourself. Just avoid him if you can.
Do not take his class if you can avoid it. He assigns 15 readings/videos and only allows two sentences to answer a three-part question. We're close to the end of the semester (two weeks left), and he hasn't graded much. What he's graded is never 100%. He rambles on about insanely liberal views for about 95% of the class then yaps over the end time.
I took Dr. Bowler my first semester of freshmen year, and it has been the worst experience I have had in college by far. He is manipulative and belittles you if you have a different opinion than him. I had him during the election, and he talked about politics in every class and bragged about his accomplishments every chance he got. Save yourself.
Be ready to learn nothing in his class other than his opinions. He does not care about what you have to say and refuses to give a's out for some reason. He thinks nothing is a-worthy. You will learn in his class, but it will just be about his political opinions. Do not take this class.
Dr. Bowler is one of the worst professors I've ever had the displeasure of having. He talks so much and says so little. His instructions for papers are very esoteric and hard to understand. His advice and instructions mean nothing because even if you follow them you'll only get a B+. I would recommend any other professor over Dr. Bowler.
I have never held such contempt for a professor as I do for Dr. Bowler. Every low rating you see of his is absolutely true, and you should take them deeply into consideration before taking his class. He is rude, condescending, extremely unclear, and unhelpful. He also is a very poor writer but grades so harshly. Take any other professor.
This professor only cares about what he has to say. This class is mostly him speaking over you and attendance is mandatory. He refuses to give 100% on anything. 3 main papers are mostly your entire grade. Grading criteria and expectations on the papers were unclear especially the first one. He also has a weird way of having you write papers.
I wouldn't consider the class difficult as I believe a lot of it is easy to understand, but he is super specific on what he is looking for. He has favorites, and is very liberal based. Which is fine considering what he is teaching, but he is not afraid to start an argument. You have a question every class and 3 papers. You will NEVER get a 100%.
Essay prompts were poorly-worded, which made them unnecessarily difficult. I couldn't understand most of the essay prompt content and had to grasp at straws. He was then rude in comments about said misunderstood prompt papers. I didn't understand much of his feedback. However, he's well-traveled and gave many homework assignments for good points.
Michael is not very bright as a person. It shows in his lectures. He grades harshly for some reason. Attendance is mandatory, yet his lectures are pointless as they serve no purpose to further learning. The textbook he uses has typos and grammatical errors. The prompts for his papers are difficult to process since the sentences are usually run-ons.
The worst professor at winona state. His paper prompts made no sense and he graded everything so harsh with poorly worded feedback. Makes attendance mandatory but never gives any good information. Talks about himself. And whenever he talks its so long and so boring. Take any other class besides his.
If you ever expect to leave the classroom at the time ur class ends, if you can't handle constant "um", "uh", and if you ever want to have your emails responded to in a timely manner or EVER, just don't take his class. He acts like his class is the only class to exist, and attendance is mandatory. Got an A but at the expense of my mental being!!!!
I really enjoyed the global studies class!
I've had Dr. Bowler for 2 classes, and, its the same pattern. Do some reading and make small response, and then sit in class, learn nothing. Also Dr. Bowler isnt afraid to get poltical in the middle of class. His essays are hard to understand, get ready to be proven wrong. Would not take any of his classes again, if able avoide them.
3 essays, no exams. A LOT of reading before each class, and take notes on the reading because sometimes he grills students in class by calling them out by name to answer a question pertaining to the readings. If he suspects that students aren't actually reading the readings, he will threaten to give out a quiz on the topic. Talks about himself.
Took this class last year so some changes may be present; - if you miss more than 3 classes he WILL potentially fail you!!! doesn't matter is your grade is passing or not. I had to fight for my life for a B, lesson learned! - you never get 100% - I found that a lot of class material stuck with me, so class was worth it, but I would not take again
Is not very clear about what he wants from you. He constantly talks about himself. Is not super helpful when talking to him. I would not EVER take a class from him.
