sooooo funny...
honestly one of the easiest, funniest teachers
With this child development course he was full of stories about his kids.
Great prof!
My fave prof.
Understands the material very well, so he's very helpful, and interesting.

Great prof. My absolute favorite.
very funny and charismatic teacher... but that's about it.. He shirks his duties as a proff, skips classes, and makes up by by taking out portions of the course material... end result: relatively easy class... in which you learn relatively little stuff
Yea Boyes!
GREAT PROF! He is so enthusiastic and always willing to give help. There is no way he should have even one bad rating! YAY DR.BOYES! This prof actually WANTS you to pass his course... a little different from the others!

Dr.Boyes is a great prof. He is easy to understand, very helpful and fair. His class was my favorite one this semester!
westcoast dude stuck in cowtown, doin the best he can, which is alot! ask him about the good ol days in van. funny man, great guy!
Dr. Boyes is a very interesting and helpful prof, his tests are very fair if you screw up on one you get to drop it so he gives you a second chance.
Made the class and material fun and interesting.
Great prof. Tests are easy. Provides notes on the net (perfect if you miss a class).
He's awesome! So relaxed and a nice guy. Class is actually enjoyable and he treats his students with respect.
Boyes + KNB132 = BAD MIX!! I fall asleep in his class 80% of the time i showed up. His best 2 out of 3 midterm policy is kickass though
Fantastic. Very helpful, makes it easy to learn for anyone, lots of verbal, good overhead, notes online. Suggest that you buy the study guide as many of the questions that are on the test are in the study guide.
Best 2/3 midterm policy is awesome for students, provides a little relief in this hectic life! He was mainly interesting, genuinely cared about the students and the course. Knew what he was talking about, tests were easy enough.
Boyes is AWESOME. It's like he remembers what it's like to be a student. He wants to make the class as stress-free as possible. His best 2/3 midterm exams policy rules.
secret 2 success:do ? in study guide. do ? on cd included with txtbk. do ? in website found in inside cover of txtbk. do ? found on his forum. this is 90% of the tests. the ?s you do in these 4 media shouldn't take more than 3 hrs.only
excellent prof - very fair tests and made the course material interesting. the questions he uses are from the study guide and internet which makes it easy to study for tests!! Horrible notes but overall excellent proff/class!
He is such a good prof! He makes it interesting, and has a good sense of humour.
Pretty good. His notes can get kind of confusing but I'd still recomend him.
Tended to teach material irrelevant to midterms and didnt teach very crucial material for midterms. Real genuinely nice guy, but he was also late for about 4 lectures throughout semester. IMO VERY tough course to do well in... did lots of work/studying and still couldnt do very well on midterms.
he is a ncie guy...but his lectur is really really horrible. His midterms have nothing to do with his lecture. and he talks so fast and never stop. I can't stand with the way he teach. and even though u study ur ass off, u still can't get a good mark.
He can teach a lot of irrelevant material. It's very hard to get a really good mark on his tests. However, he is approachable and wants his students to do well.
There's something very wrong with the whole U of C psyc dept, and here's a good example (no wonder UofC gets ranked so low). He skips lectures on important material, plays videos in lieu of teaching, and has exams based entirely on the book (that he gets royalties from). Why bother going to lecture?
Like the person below me said, there isn't much poin in going to lecture. However, if you can read and have good memorization skills, you can do fine in the class. The class average was ~75 for my fall semester 2004.
there is no point to go to his lectures.
was a good prof 2 years ago, but not anymore.
Really funny and engaging professor.
I didn't go to lectures for the second half of classes, just read the book. He drops the lowest of the three exams. A GPA booster, but only if reading is a good point for you.
A good guy, and yeah not all too stimulating, but not deathly boring either. For those that say its hard to get a good mark from him, here's some golden advice; buy the study guide & do the practice tests, know the ch.terms and go hard on the ch. summaries. That's gotten me an A for 2 of his classes
great teacher and funny as well.
It is enthusiastic about his work which makes it more intersting. He knows his material, he can pull a random case study out of his ass with accurate info. His tests are harder and not all that relevant to his lectures. Not that bad!
Read the chapters before you do the quizzes b/c a lot of the material is from the text. I found him really interesting
Not enough theory, too much examples, and he babbles about them without taking a breath. His constant level of excitement ironically turns into one long monotonous buzzing drone. This is the class that I always drink coffee before, otherwise it's just naptime.
I thought he was very knowledgable and funny. Sometimes the class got boring, but the content was interesting.
he makes psyc interesting and fun...never a dull moment in class, he explians information well and gets across his point with clarity. hes an awesome, goodnatured man. Always smiling and friendly
What a joke. Some of us want to actually learn course material, not have him cut a quarter of the syllabus because he kept missing class. By the way, watching movies for 3 classes? I thought that only happened in elementary schools.
... You know what those are? Periods. Now Imagine a really nervous and politically correct to boot prof who doesn't use said periods. Now put him on speed. That's him. Needless to say, if you can't keep up with his speech, you'll be left in the dust and flurry of examples he gives. "Read book" isn't that helpful either - he wrote it.
Gotta agree with the poster below...this guy needs take a breather every now and then. He also has zero control over the class. Half the class was very loud and rude but he rarely made attempts to quiet them down.
I wouldn't tell anyone to stay away from this guy. He covers what is on the test, I hardly ever read the textbook and ended up with a good grade. He puts practice quizzes on Blackboard and some on the questions are directly copied to the tests. Easy course, if you ask me.
If you followed all of the readings, did the practice questions and took good notes, there is no reason you can't do well in this class. The movies were educational and in my opinion made the information stick. Great class, professor was very happy and nice.
Great prof! His tests are extremely easy, just read the textbook and do the practise questions he gives you on blackboard and you'll ace his tests. He gives good examples that could relate pychology theories with real life. Needs to take a breather tho, talks really fast. Hard to keep up with him if you're taking notes.
He's a nice guy, and he really knows what he's talking about in this class, because its his specialty. The last half of the course he didn't even lecture, it was just all presentations from the students, which was not on the test, so going to class was pretty pointless. But he teaches 351 better than 205, that's for sure.
Easy Class since best 2/3 midterms, but questions can be tricky at times. Its an Easy A-
really good professor, can be boring at times but it dont matter what prof isnt boring at times.....easy A......for ppl who said he isnt good must be stupid.
I don't understand why there are so many good reviews for prof. Boyes. His tests are extremely difficult with many nit-picky questions that require straight memorization from obscure passages in the textbook. He knows his stuff for sure but presents in an awful manner and is extremely boring. I got an A, but still think Boyes is a bad 351 prof.
I LOVE HIM!! I find his lectures very interesting and i love just sitting there and listening to him. All his powerpoints are on the internet and he just goes through them in class but still go! Listen to what he says. its easier to understand than the powerpoint or text. READ THE TEXT. test is hard and detailed but easy if you read and go to class
not the best proff but exams were all super easy if you read the text book in detail! most questions on the exam were from the textbook and the study guide that came along with the textbook...def a GPA booster :)
Boyes is an amazing professor.. he does everything he can to provide his students with the tools they need to succeed. He puts specific podcasts on the internet prior to tests telling you what to study, gives helpful notes, makes jokes in lectures to increase interest and definitely has a genuine interest in his subject which always helps!
this guy is awesome
Child development was one of my favourite classes of my undergrad. His exams are fair but he expects all students to read the assigned readings in the textbook regardless of its presence in the lecture notes. It may not be mentioned in the lecture notes but is still fair game on exams.
He was a good lecturer, but it didn't really feel like we did that much in class. He was helpful and the notes were good.
he's the nicest guy in the world. like a prof you'd have in junior high or something. unfortunately, he's a little monotone (even though you can tell he's passionate about what he's teaching). the entire exam is the textbook. it's an easy A.
Everyone told me the class is easy, but I guess it depends on your goal(eg A). He is a very very nice person, but spends too much time on talking about funny experiments. You must read the text carefully in order to do well. Questions are tricky. Make sure to get the research credits since he gives out 2% bonus. To get an A, u still need to work.
I think the key to doing well in Dr Boyes class is to definitely read the textbook. The exam questions were taken from the textbook exam-bank. Overall, I think he's an excellent professor and really tries to help his students. He allowed us to receive an additional 2% bonus mark and to drop the final exam (best 3/4) if we get above 50% on it.
Easy course - very introductory. Similar to high school material. Easy though
Very nice guy, and a good prof. A bit monotone, but he lightens class up with good storie, but they may not seem as funny after he repeats them more than once. Most of his tests are from the text, so reading atleast the chapter summaries is necessary. Easy to get atleast A-
This class is completely textbook. Read your text, you dont even need to look at the lecture notes to get an A. Going to class is only worth it because hes entertaining. Short answers are either on the psychological theorists, or a topic he spends a fair deal of time on in class.....only reason to go really. Hes a nice guy!!!
Best Professor I have ever had. The most understanding and engaging. His tests are extremely fair. He genuinely cares about his students and takes the time to answer questions and puts podcasts on blackboard to make topics clearer. Lot's of reading but it's easy to understand. If you have the oppurtunity to take a class with him don't miss it.
Very good teacher. Easy course, but he laid it out in a very clear and organized way. With psychology courses you absolutely have to read the material, but even just going to lectures you would likely get at least a B-.
he is a really nice guy and deffinatly cares about the students. rambles on about interesting things but they are not important to the curricilum and have nothing to do with info on test. his tests are hard you have to read the text because that is where all the info you need to know for the test is, its not in his lectures.
His exams are frustrating (there is so much to read in the txtbook for his exams, must read EVERYTHING in book to do well). Lectures are irrelevant with exams so ..very annoying. If you take pysch205 you must take it with him this yr.. no choice. Melissa Boyce is a million times better, really wish she could just teach this course. Boyce MUCHbetter
Very nice Prof. He told many stories that were interesting but I did not find lecture notes helpful. If you study the textbook, you'll get an A.
If you want to pass the course then you better just read the textbook. He relies on it and nothing else for his exams (then again he wrote it!). Lectures are intriguing and have some fun and interesting stories and experiments which were cool to listen to, but in regards to how pertinent attending the lectures are for passing the course? Not at all
Easy to do well in this class if you apply yourself
Awesome prof!! The quizes are simple, if you read the book you will do good. His lectures are really interesting, he uses lots of cool examples. one of my favorite profs so far!
Excellent, I learned a lot in this course. Lectures are well done and are usually fascinating, sometimes humorous too!
I had him for 205 and thought he was pretty good. But 351 is a different story. He rambles, the notes are unorganized with horrible wording, the text book was about 400 pages too long, and his tests challenged your reading comprehension more than your knowledge of child psychology. Extremely nice guy, had some interesting stories, but bad course.
talks on and on and on.....just doesnt stop, so he looses my attention pretty quick, but a very good prof.. he enjoys what he's doing
I LOVED DR. BOYES, HE WAS AWESOME. Totally made psychology interesting for me. Knows what he is talking about, really enagaging and highly interesting. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to take a psychology class. He's really easy and really fun!
I believe Dr. Boyes' tests were difficult because he took the material and examined whether or not you could apply the concepts in other situations. If you don't really understand the underlying concept, you're hooped anyways! I enjoyed listening to his lectures, though his notes were a bit erratic. Not a bad professor at all.
Without a doubt the EASIEST class I have had in two years. The readings and lectures are sort of boring, but the tests are at *worst* as hard as any random high school option. Boyes does tend to ramble a little bit and the slides don't make any sense without going to class... but he's such a nice guy it's hard to fault him for it. :P
Really liked Dr.Boyes. Lecture notes were incomprehensible if you didn't go to class, so I would recommend attending regularly. Tests weren't too hard but attendance and doing the readings is necessary for a good grade. Nice guy, very accommodating and very helpful when approached with questions. Dr.Boyes' class is why I am reconsidering my major
He was soo funny! Great guy, super nice and very chill. There was a blizzard one Friday so he sent us an email telling us to stay warm and not bother coming to class. Awesome!
Fantastic prof! Lectures were always interesting and as long as you did the readings the tests were a piece of cake. Also he's very helpful, super nice guy. Highly recommend!
Best way I could describe this man would be sloppy. A great lecturer as he was very entertaining, but everything else about this course was terrible. Not very helpful, wording on the tests and assignments was horrible, and asked questions that really didn't seem to test the material. Great guy, but a sloppy prof.
I don't understand why he has decent ratings, but honestly his tests require intense preparation which involves endless hours of reading thick paragraphs in the textbook. No set outline of what to read is given, so just gotta read em' all to make sure you cover everything. Real shame he was only prof to choose for pysc205 this entire year (F09/W10)
is kinda sloppy like what prior person said. Interesting course material but he mutters when he talks....and he talks continuously. No pauses or interactions with class. Some days he's funny and other days...he's just plain dry. oooohh and READ THE TEXTBOOK AND KNOW YOUR NOTES WELL!!! wording on tests and assignments aren't that good.
This class is not absolutely easy for an option because it requires as much work and studying compared to a regular core class, and perhaps even more I say if you compare it to a Math class or Stats class. The amount of reading required is very frustrating since fine details are pulled out of it and those details are not bolded out in the book.
Dr. Boyes is an all round great, humorous guy. He relates well to students and conveys course material clearly and with ease. That being said, his slides and tests are somewhat sloppy. However, he makes great use of additional resources and props. The written assignments were strict & dull, lacking in freedom of expression. Great prof though.
Thought it was going to be harder than the 203 course which i heard was easy. It wasn't too bad, lectures can be boring. Nothing too hard to understand.
Really easy if you read the text book. Can pass without showing up to class.
A nice professor and quite interesting to listen to. Yes, quite mumbling but coherent and not hard at all to discern (English being my 2nd lang. and still far from fluent). Material itself on child development is pretty fascinating and makes both Boyes's lecturing and reading the textbook quite easy.
This was my first course at the UofC, and I have to say, considering my intermediate level of English back in fall'2007, the course came to be comprehensive and nice to attend. Mr. Boyce was a good first university instructor
I had Boyes for 205 and it was by far my easiest class. I found the workload was not half as bad as people made it out to be-if you skim through the text a day or two before a test and learn important concepts it's not hard to get an A. Boyes is a pretty funny guy and I found the material interesting.
best prof ever! he knows exactly what he is talking about. he is very entertaining and if you read the textbook you'll get an A for sure!
Dr. Boyes was the best professor I've had. Very clear, with lessons that match the text book and exams. His stories make it easy to remember the material, and his slides are excellent. I was very impressed. Not really an easy A, but he makes it easier than it could be.
Awesome prof! Easy to listen and graded fairly. Was willing to eliminate questions on tests that no one got right. highly recommended.
Great class, great professor. Sometimes has hard questions on the test, so just make sure to really study the textbook, the questions on the test come way more from the textbook than from the lectures. Would definately reccomend this professor, take a class with him if you can!!
Dr. Boyes is great, I've taken 3 classes (203, 205, 351) from him and he is the reason I am majoring in Psyc. Although much of the tests are from the textbook, I still went to class to hear the interesting stories he had. He's a genuine, nice guy.
Awesome.
His lectures are interesting but completly useless. None of the extra stuff he throws on his errorfull powerpoints show up on tests and stuff from the tbook that is not in the lecture notes are on tests so you have to basically read the entire chapter. I think he is useless and his test questions are not fair. Only goes over what he thinksinterestn
I loved this professor. He has a great sense of humour and makes class fun and interesting. Take this class with him if you can!
EASIEST class I've ever taken. Boyes tests are based almost solely on the textbook, his lectures are for entertainment more than anything, nothing on the slides are really tested. Skip class if you want, and cram the day before, and you'll still get an A (like I did).
Dr. Boyes is an awesome teacher. His lectures are interesting and hilarious, and he is always willing to answer questions. All around nice and approachable guy. As far as difficulty goes, this class is pretty much a walk in the park. Questions come more from the texbook than lectures.
Very nice professor. He's super friendly and approachable. Class has an easy non-cumulative term test format. He sticks to the textbook and lectures are worth going to.
very awesome prof.made you like to be psychology and ,makes school fun
Take this class with him if you are looking for a good option. Lectures weren't completely necessary to go to as he posts all the power points on Blackboard. For quizzes just read the textbook chapters he assigns.
He is an awesome prof and a super interesting speaker. You don't have to attend lectures, but they're fun to listen to and give your brain a little time to relax after all the hard courses. His lecture notes are pretty useless, though. so be sure to read the textbook because most of the questions in the exams come from the text.
Passionate about the subject. Going to lectures was a treat. Always had a funny story to share. I continued to take his courses for as long as I could for my degree.
Excellent lecturer, but does take a fair bit from the text book for exams. Attending lectures helps but wouldn't say it's entirely necessary. Got an A, but wouldn't say it was easy like others have. Also a lot of reading and assignments for an entry level class, almost feel like I should have earned a PhD in psych for the amount of work I did.
Very great prof. Nice and clear. Attendance is not necessary (he records and uploads his lectures) Powerpoint slides are vague but you'll get more notes in class. Reading the textbook is quite important. Tests questions are half textbook, half notes. They're somewhat easy. However, there is a tutorial which requires 5 assignments, easy marks though
I only had him for a couple classes as he substituted for my regular Developmental Psych prof who happened to be horrible so having Boyes come in for a couple classes was a treat! He seems like a warm and jolly guy and definitely knows his stuff. He doesn't have to talk out of a textbook. He speaks naturally. Great lecturer!
Amazing professor, has a great sense of humor and finds ways to keep students entertained.Work is not hard but not easy either.Recommended professor, presents course material clearly. If you miss a class,no worries,he will always have the notes and podcasts on blackboard.A highly recommended professor.
Boyes is a great guy. Very passionate about the subject matter. Attending lectures is not mandatory as he puts up recordings of the lectures on blackboard. Just be sure to read the required textbook chapters before the tests.
Very passionate, and really, really wants all his students to do well. He posts his lectures on blackboard, and does everything possible to make sure students get the best marks that they can. :)
A very helpful, fair, enthusiastic professor. He knows plenty about the subject being taught, and his grading system gives students a good advantage. For this course, I found reading textbook is was quite necessary, as parts of the notes was covered broadly. Tests are fair, but do need studying for. Old edition of the textbook will do.
You can tell he's really passionate about the subject material. Some questions on his tests were a little obscure and overly specific but overall fair. Make sure you read the text book and take some notes on what he says in class because what he says in class may show up on tests. He gives you the opportunity for bonus marks though, hurrrayy!
Really funny and interesting guy. Very passionate. Most of his tests are based off the textbook and are quite fair. Class isn't mandatory since he posts podcasts online.
Great prof! I think he deserves a higher rating than what he has on here. His lectures are interesting and he walways has funny stories to tell. However, his tests were based mostly on the textbook. Regardless of that, I attended every class because they were still so interesting. I would definitely take another class with him!
boyes gave too many "options" for the course in my opinion. sometimes it was confusing to remember what "option" i had chosen or want to choose and what the option requires me to complete for credit. he is somewhat misleading in terms of difficulty. if you like social psychology, take a course with him. i find that stuff rather boring myself.
Wonderfully passionate professor. If you ever have questions, or just want a good chat, don't be shy! He is very welcome to questions and comments. Textbook was heavily used for tests, even blurbs from the intro pages into the chapter. Class not mandatory, but still entertaining to listen.
Mike is such an amazing prof! Some say you don't need to go to lecture, but he really tied together concepts and I definitely remembered things on exams more by connecting them to his lecture. Really wants you to do well, and very passionate! Amazing speaker, 90 mins twice a week was a pleasure and I went because I wanted to. Defs recommend
The class is easy and I really like the prof as a person. But I was incredibly bored during the lectures. To the point where I didn't come to class, read the textbook and aced the course. He just doesn't stay on topic enough for me. Too many anecdotes.
Very helpful and very involved. The man posts audio podcasts of his lectures, great! You can tell he really puts a lot of effort into teaching this class.
If you BUY the textbook, really READ the text book, take NOTES on every single assigned topic IN the textbook, I personally guarantee you an A in this class. Still go to lectures, though-- it will help tie concepts together. As a prof he is GREAT, really fair, and so accommodating to students. Love him!
Make sure you study from the textbook. If you don't, you're almost for sure not going to do well. Covers most of the material in lectures but the exams have many specific facts only found in the textbook. Interesting prof and subject. Really enjoyed it!
Great prof! Podcasts all of his lectures so if you miss one no worries! Does tend to go off on tangents during lectures however. MUST READ the textbook to do well on tests. He does throw in some random questions though. Easy A.
I really enjoyed Mike Boyes's lectures,he is funny and has so much knowledge to share. He sometimes talks too much about one power point slide but the information is very interesting. He enjoys people visiting him during office hours, responds to emails quickly and gives tests based straight out of the textbook so you could not go to class.
Material is interesting, but lectures are dry at times. If you email him about your mark, chances are that he won't respond. Even if you've completed research participation you may or may not receive the credit. Also does not respond to emails regarding research participation credits.. even if it's his own study. Not recommended.
Easy A. Allot of textbook reading to achieve the A. Lectures will put you to sleep. He gives a good indication of what will be on the tests. Useful podcasts posted if you miss lectures. Take this for a GPA booster.
I don't know why there are so many great comments about Boyes. The only class I fell asleep in throughout my whole life. He rarely responds to emails and is extremely boring. Tests are NOT easy. Memorize every word in the text and avoid lectures at all costs. Not an easy A.
Great prof! Got a B+ overall. His exams are 40-50 questions and are fair so long as you studied the textbook thoroughly. The average for all the exams were 75-79%, roughly a B. Excellent instructor and knows what he's talking about. Highly recommended!
Lectures are completely optional, although his ramblings are quite interesting sometimes. You can tell he's very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the subject. I found him easier to listen to than a certain other intro PSYC prof. Just memorize the chapters the weekend before the exams and it's an easy A.
Dr. Boyes is amazing! He's extremely passionate about what he teaches and is so knowledgeable. He explains everything in a way that everyone is able to understand and he tells you exactly what to expect for his exams! Amazing prof and I will be taking more courses from him if I get the chance!
Pretty easy class. Just study the textbook and do the practice problems he give you. Lectures are pretty boring and sometimes hard to listen to. He posts an audio version of the lectures online which is nice. He enjoys what he teaches and is one of the better intro psych professors you can get.
Enjoying the class, mostly because he seems to enjoy what he is teaching. Tests are not hard but definitely require the textbook.
If you want to do well, you have to know EVERYTHING in the textbook! Not an easy A, at least for me, class is impossible to stay awake in. Nice professor and gives plenty of free marks but you have to know your stuff.
Dr. Boyes is a really nice guy, but his lectures can be a little long-winded and he can go off into tangents. His exams weren't really hard, but they could be confusing. I don't think grammar is really his strong point. He posts podcasts of every lecture so you don't have to go to class.
this class lecutres are not mandatory; podcasts are posted online. going to lectures is pointless because he just rambles about things that are completely irrelevant to the tests. in order to do well you need to know EVERYTHING from the chapter - lecture material is not worth knowing AT ALL.
He's passionate about the material, but lectures are dry & not mandatory to attend (podcasts online). Hard to stay awake in class & he gets off track easily & rambles about irrelevant things. Heavy textbook use & also read lecture powerpoints thoroughly.
Dr. Boyes is hilarious and this makes lectures fun and engaging although sometimes it gets boring. Reading the textbook is a must and make sure you memorize the terms and examples in lecture and readings. You also have an opportunity to earn a 6% bonus which is a plus.
Lectures can be long winded and boring. Sometimes you'll go through only 2 slides in 1 class. Textbook will be your best friend. His exams are fair but are designed to hit a 75% average. Some questions come from single lines in the text, so know it well. Course gets tougher as you go. Assignments are easy enough but aren't marked easy.
He is very passionate about his classes and get rambling about experiments that excite him. If you don't want to attend class you don't have to because he records lectures and posts on blackboard. Tests are kind of confusing but if you read the text book and listen to lectures you should be good. MEMORIZE TEXT!
Great prof, I had him for both PSYC 200 and 201. He is really enthusiastic and does ramble on quite a bit, some days he only got through 3 slides. But the tests were easy as long as you read the assigned readings. And a tip is to do practice tests as questions from there do show up on the quizes.
I attended lecture all the time. He can be very boring and his stories seem irrelevent. He posts podcasts so you don't need to show up to class. Honestly, memorize the textbook and understand it. Exams consists of applying what you've learned to situations and memorizing differences between concepts. Overall, not that great. On your own.
I really enjoyed Dr. Boyes, great professor. He's very passionate about the subject, and although he does ramble often, most of the stories are quite relevant. Having the podcast option is so convenient. Generally, no complaints! I would be very happy to be in another of his classes!
Really nice and great prof! He has podcasts so it really helps if you cannot make it to class! His voice is soft and easy to listen to but it often makes me sleepy so it can be hard to concentrate. Sit closer if you're someone like me. Exams are really easy! As long as you read the textbook, you're good to go! It helps to go to his lectures though!
Seems like a very nice, very knowledgable guy. His tests were very fair if you'd studied from the slides AND read the textbook. There was the occasional question on tests that was from the textbook but not mentioned in the slides. His podcasts are very helpful and are great if you don't feel like attending lectures. Papers were marked generously.
Dr Boyes is one my favourite and by far the EASIEST prof at U of C. He podcasts every lecture/posts notes, so your lazy ass doesn't even need to go to class. Good 60-70% of exam material is straight from the textbook. Read the textbook and watch the videos & this class is an easy A.
This class was a little boring at times because it was a 1hr 15 minute class, but he had a lot of interesting examples and lecture materials (videos, diagrams, in class "experiments") that made it more interesting. He posts his lectures as podcasts on d2l as well, so attendance is non-mandatory. He was extremely helpful and very enthusiastic.
Dr Boyes is one of the best profs that I have encountered so far. I have taken a couple of classes with him and it has always been an amazing experience. He is enthusiastic and very easy to approach. He is also passionate about the subject he teaches. He is one of the few profs that actually care about students!
Super understanding professor. Will let you reschedule one of his quizzes if you give a good reason. His quizzes and wording are confusing though. I typically get A-/A in psych courses and the quizzes threw me off enough to drop me by a letter grade. Boring class, nice professor.
Boyes is enthusiastic and quite funny. I found the lectures rather boring, but he posts podcasts so you can stay home. I took it as a GPA booster, but found it not to be an easy A, it's easy to get in the 70-80% range on all tests but have to be really interested and have the time to get higher than that. Gives bonus marks. 80% of tests from book.
If you go to class, read the textbook, and take notes on what he says, you will get an A. Very clear lectures and very interesting information if developmental psychology is up your alley. Written assignments are graded fairly according to rubric. Also uploads lectures to the internet.
I was fairly interested in the course material and therefore I did better than the class average on the midterms and finals. Read the textbook and focus on the sections which overlap with the notes. His MC questions can sometimes be vague. He usually takes 1-2 questions out of the final and midterms (boosts up your grade). Also you get a 6% bonus!
hes amazing. and funny. and hot.
He's a funny guy but he rambles a lot.
His lectures are interesting, and it's clear that he's fascinated by what he's teaching. He posts all the lectures online, and his slides are super helpful. I found that the textbook was good to have, since he takes everything straight out of it. He only gives three midterms and a final, all of which are MC. Liked him more than other PSYC profs.
Hated this class. He's a great guy but super laid back does not care to really teach anything not friendly if visit him in office hours. Is not there for his students, will not round grade up even if you're .17% away from the next letter.
One of the best profs! He's a funny and nice guy. He posts his lectures online so you don't really have to come to class. He has a soft voice though, so sit near the front or just listen to the podcast. Always starts the class where he asks the students if we have any questions, which is generally nice to hear.
Terrible testing method, needs to be improved.
He is a good prof and he is very passionate about the subject, the Baby Human series he showed in the class was hilarious. The assigned reading was too long and I think the TA was not fair in grading the papers, I almost spent 30 hours on the last paper and got a B-! I guess he is not going to teach any classes any more.
Tests were very hard and he tested on things he said he wouldn't. Need to read the textbook to do well on the tests because a lot of topics he barely teaches but tests in detail on.
Pretty good prof. Boring at times, but because of the material. Make sure you study every piece of vocab from the textbook, studying the slides and attending class helps, but text is KEY. study for 3 days in advance, cover vocab, practice on wiley website, then you will get around a B with only a couple days effort.
very passionate and knowledgable
Very accommodating with busy schedule and missed quizzes. Funny dewd.
I took this course during the summer provided by the calgary board of education as dual credit for high school and university. He talks a lot but it's interesting since he has a lot of experience in the psychology field. He is practically a giant teddy bear and the tests are really easy if you study well!!
Sweet man. Records all his lectures, so you dont have to attend. Tends to go on and on about a topic, so sometimes loses sense of time. Otherwise gives good examples and is pretty clear in lectures. 4 multiple choice tests, absolutely no assignments.
Amazing prof! Such a kind soul and super knowledgable. He records his lectures and posts all info on d2l, but I would recommend attending class anyways because he's a great lecturer
Dr. Boyes is such a great teacher. He is very approachable and even though he can go off topic a bit, he helps you understand the material. That being said, his lecture slides do not contain all of the information you'll need for the exams and you will have to read the textbook if you want a good grade in this class. He is clear about this upfront.
Certified beauty. Boyes is very sweet, caring, and makes the material taught in this course quite enjoyable. He also records all of his lectures so that's a plus. He can ramble on about topics for a while and it can get boring, but as long as you study his slides, the textbook, and listen to the lecture podcasts, this class is a cakewalk.
You can tell Dr. Boyes is a prof because he loves both the research AND teaching aspect of the job which makes him caring and motivational. He's a humble guy who wants his course to be fair (ex. he reconsiders questions where students perform poorly). Lectures do not cover all you need to know for the exam, so reading the textbook is mandatory.
Your entire grade is based on midterm and final tests (aside from research credit), and tests are almost all based on textbook readings. You can get by in the course by never going to class and reading the textbook. When I did go to class, he was very knowledgable and well-versed on the content. Lectures did not help me do better on midterms.
He talks too much about unnecessary and sometimes irrelevant things and his lectures are boring. He would be a great prof if he stayed on topic and was more concise. Too bad.
very kind professor, and genuinely cares about his students. Reading the textbook is mandatory
Loved this class! Found it to be really interesting. He would upload podcasts of all the lectures before COVID-19 and always replies to emails. Lots of opportunities to do well and everything is pretty straight forward. Handled online transition really well. Super wholesome person:)
This guy is a legend, straight up amazing prof. He is such a nice and straightforward person and made the class easily accessible outside of class, his exams were very fair although they do weigh a lot. The class itself is not necessarily an 'easy' A, you definitely have to work for it. But all in all really great guy and great prof.
I bet he's one of the most accessible profs ever. He responds to emails fairly quickly and is there to answer questions during exams (in case we needed clarifications). He does come across as a bit wordy and adds quite a bit of extra information but if you just listen attentively during lectures you will do fine.
Best prof! Highly recommend taking this course. Majority of content are in pre-uploaded lectures (very interesting). Attending zoom sessions (once/week) is helpful as he discusses important information re: exams and elaborates on certain concepts. He uploads these sessions too incase you can't make it. Plus he answers questions almost immediately!
The classes themselves are on video podcasts with him speaking while the powerpoints are up. Theyre easy to follow and able to pause to comprehend the material. Best professor, youre always interested in whatever he says and he replies really quick to questions and explains further and more clearly.
Amazing prof! Really cares about his students success, available to answer questions and help with other course related matters. Really passionate about this subject although his lectures could be a bit monotone. Assignments and exams werent too difficult, important to understand content rather than memorizing. Great for everyday life improvement
Professor Boyes is great at what he does. He was extremely caring and understanding, and I found his vodcasts to be very straightforward and interesting. He cares about his students and the assignments are easy. The midterms are also very reasonable although I do recommend skimming through the textbook as well to prepare. One of my favorite profs.
This prof was super kind and accommodating. He gave plenty of opportunities for us to succeed. Content was rather simple and not that interesting as a 3rd year psyc student but it was an easy class and works toward an embedded certificate.
Dr Boyes was pretty good, he was clear about everything and taught everything well and seems like a great guy. His course was also organized which is nice. His lectures were quite monotonous at times but overall great experience, learned a lot from this class
I took the class asynchronously and felt like dr boyes had the material very well organized. He is pretty passionate on the material and taught it well. Pretty much everything on the exams were covered in the lectures.
This class was super enjoyable and really great for someone needing an intro to psyc or taking it as an option. His assignments were very clear on what was expected and his midterms and final were both very fair. Super nice and accesible professor I would 100% recommend taking a class with him
You can tell Prof. Boyes cares about his students especially during the pandemic. He sent everyone an encouraging email after the course was over and was always available for questions. Lectures are heavy but interesting. Tests are fair. Overall, a great course. Highly recommend.
Overall a well organized and well taught class.
Oh come on, who puts that wordy of a stock question on a final, and how can he even convince himself that the big 5 personality question was a fair question, again for a final? I talked to my mom who's a psychologist and even she told me that the questions are misleading.
well organized. some lengthy and hard to understand questions. Mike is a good guy though
Mike seems like a really chill guy and throughout most of the course he was really good but he made our final exam kind of tricky with some extremely lengthy hard to follow questions that I don't think were exactly fair.
Extremely respectable prof with a thorough understanding of the subject. He does an amazing job of involving students with course material and explaining difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand and cheerful manner. Hands down one of my favourite profs and was always willing to answer interesting questions about his profession, and give advice.
Professor Boyes delivers the course material clearly and makes himself accessible to students. The tests can be tricky, but using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the textbook will help. Overall, a solid psych class.
Boyes is a great prof who breaks down concepts in a way that is simple and easy to understand. He gives helpful examples and practice questions in the video lectures to better illustrate material and prepares you for the exams. I learned lots of useful concepts that felt like a therapy session in itself!
Although the lectures could get long/dry at times, he did an excellent job of using examples for interest and easy understanding. The way the course was graded was clear and he gives clear expectations of scheduling despite being an asynchronous course. The assignments are great as they apply to our future which makes them interesting to do.
