really good teacher. he changed my views on language and the world...amazing teacher!
He is hilarious, but if foul language offends you he is not the teacher for you. I really don't like philospohy you have to think way to hard, study and read the book and it will be ok. He gives a lot of partial credit so his tests aren't bad.
This class was nothing like what I was expecting. It does get better later in semster. Only three tests, so you don't have any room for error, and they cover a ton of material. He does give great partial credit. I feel I learned a lot from the class, but the class is pretty dull for most part. Some interesting out of class readings though.
Sharp teacher, great humor. I loved going to his class! I would recommend him if you want to learn a thing or two including just about everything! If you want an A, make sure to give him a small bottle of scotch before every test ;)
This professor is a lot of fun. He knows his stuff and sure you understand that you know whats on the test. I would take his class as a filler class.
Holy crap. This guy is amazing. Don't listen to the negative comments; he teaches to the top of the class rather than the bottom, true. But if you actually pay attention and try, he is one of the most informative and insightful teachers on campus. Huzzah for Boyle.
This guy is awesome! Greek mythology always seemed interesting to me, but I thought it was confusing as hell...but he makes it so easy! I love this class!
I really like Mr.Boyle;however, he always looks at the back of the classroom and never at the students which seems creepy! He provides all the information needed for the exams which makes them super simple if you just attend class. He also has a sense of humor so he makes the class interesting. Definately a good professor!
He is an amazing teacher. Attendance is mandatory first because he goes over everything that will be on the test, second because he's very informative and funny. I would love to take a class of his again.
he s the mannnn
Mr. B was only the facilitator for this telecourse. Nice guy, but either so overloaded or so uninterested in this class that he barely responded to inquiry. Tests were straightforward if you use the study tool.
He's laid back, lectures a lot, and doesn't assign much work. We had a couple of tests and a paper, and the tests were done at home. If you pay attention in class you'll have no problem and will only need to skim the readings. Also, it'll help you understand the readings because they can get boring and confusing. I recommend him.
Prof B is good professor. He's funny which make the class entertaining & he selects fantastic readings and movie clips. The best way to learn is to have fun while doing it and Prof B amalgamates them perfectly! I HIGHLY recommend his class
After 16 years of education, I can say that Mr. Boyle is the best teacher I have ever had. He explains the material in unique and creative ways. It makes coming to class exciting! This class changed my life and I recommended it to anyone who is interested in the way life really is. Makes study guides, gives extra credit, and is very friendly!
Taught this class over at Drury and was very good. Understands that standard testing doesn't teach you anything. Wants you to take something away from the course. Recommended.
Great guy! Very helpful and interesting.
A professor who actually knows what he is talking about and is good at teaching it. If you go to class its very hard not to pass with flying colors
Very helpful! Willing to go out of his way to help you. Not too bad on the eyes either!!!
He is very helpful and really wants you to understand the material, not just memorize the material and forget it later. Each test had a study guide that we went over in class to make sure we knew what everything was. Tests were very straightforward with MC and then a section of essay where we got to choose which ones we wanted to write about.
Professor Boyle is a wonderful teacher. I have never had a class that I have been able to take so much away from. He makes the material interesting and relevant to life. I feel I am a better person by what I learned in his class and would recommend him to anybody. Take his classes, they are not hard and they are very rewarding!
One of the Best Teachers MSU has to offer. If you have to take a philosophy class, I would recommend taking it with Boyle. he conveys the information in an understandable way that you usually don't get from Philosophy teachers.
Good teacher all around. Take this course if you want to get an automatic good grade. Attend class and it will be a breeze.
Best teacher I have had at MSU so far and has a very interesting class and really makes you think in a different way about everyday things in life whether you want to or not. I recommend this teacher to anyone and its not an easy A because of how easy the class is its an easy A because of how great a teacher he is and how well he explains PHI.
Great professor. Very easy class but makes you think about the subject matter. 3 papers for grade. No final, no tests.
I HATED THIS CLASS. It was soooo boring. I had to fight just to stay awake. Dont get me wrong the class isn't that hard, its just a matter of staying awake in order to listen. If you dont attend class you probably wont understand the material. The only grades you get are straight from exams. He does NOT do a comprehensive final which is nice.
This is one of my favorite classes I have taken at MSU yet. Dr. Boyle is very good at explaining philosophical concepts to those who are not philosophy majors. Interesting subject matter, very nice guy, very helpful, easy on the eyes too.
Took this as an online course this summer. Surprisingly interesting class. Learned a lot. Very few grades- 3 papers, a midterm, and a final. Easy A if you know your stuff.
I'm taking this as an online class. Mr. Boyle may be fine in the classroom, but his online instructing skills leave a bit to be desired. He is not a good communicator, takes weeks to grade assignments, doubles up on material when we fall behind because he doesn't post the assignments, and gives random due dates (often not enough time).
This class was very interesting. You have to really pay attention to understand what is going on. You only have 2 exams and the final. That's it. Mr. Boyle is an extremely intelligent and his class can be boring at times but overall its an easy class.
I took Critical Thinking, which is a very interesting class. He takes complex concepts and puts them into simple and understandable terms. He's an excellent and funny professor, and is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. Tests are mostly essay, but are still not very difficult. Take this class if you want an interesting gen ed class.
Was a good teacher, feel like while he was funny at moments he could have been a lot more. Still thought he was a great teacher
Excellent communicator in class. One component should be a stand alone class. Probably the useful class i've taken in my entire college career. Not abstract, but practical and applicable. He makes you think--if you fall asleep in his class you probably aren't breathing anyway! Take Freshman year if at all possible! Will save you $$$ and headaches.
He is seriously my favorite teacher that I've ever had. He always made us feel comfortable with what was going on. He cares about students so much.
Great teacher, class kind of stinks until you get toward the end, then it's actually really interesting and practical (using "The Global Auction") He's extremely smart and a bit intimidating at first but he's super nice and always wants to help.
Critical Thinking was an interesting and super easy class. You can tell he is a brilliant man which made it a bit intimidating at first but he doesn't grade very hard at all. He has review sessions the class period before the exam and tells you everything you need to know and post a summary of readings on blackboard.
UHC is a pointless class, but he tries to add a purpose to it. The first half is all presentations and then he gets into his material. It is dull at points, but he is very caring about his students and is always willing to provide help. He will put notes online and try and let class go early as much as possible.
I loved this class and Mr. boyle. He's such a great professor! Very clear to understand and always willing to help! He's incredibly smart, which helps gain student's interest, as well.
UHC is pointless, but since one must take it, Boyle is the teacher to take it with. Great teacher
The material can be extensive, but he makes it easy. Very intelligent man. He tries to have meaningful discussions with the class, rather than lecture the whole time
He is an amazing teacher who is willing to help at all times. Just finished his online class and he was always speedy with his email responses. He is very laid-back and understanding. When I had to go to the hospital for eye problems he let me turn in the midterm late with no point deduction. Makes material easy to understand. Great guy.
Professor Boyle is the coolest guy you can ever hope to have to teach you philosophy. He brings in modern topics into his lectures, really keeps things interesting. Be sure to study you vocabs. And ask questions about any theories that you are not sure about. Final is non-comprehensive though, that's a plus. Also, do your extra credits!
Grade in the class is made up primarily on three tests. He gives you a study guide for all of them, know everything on those and you'll do alright. The tests do consist mostly of multiple choice, matching, and essays. The material was interesting, lots of readings, read one children's book(phantom tollbooth), and watched video clips. TAKE NOTES!
Michael is a very smart professor and he made the class interesting. However, since we were all honors students he expected more from us than he should have and a lot of what he said went over our heads in class. Only a few tests and they're essays that he's very lenient at grading.
I took this for eight weeks and it was a dream come true. If you enjoy independent study, I would highly recommend this. Boyle posts lectures and such, but he also posts articles (on which you write your essays) and notes for the articles. I learned a lot from this because I put in my fair share of the work and enjoy reading. Thanks, professor!
If i could somehow incorporate his class into a religion i would convert in a heart beat. The class in incredible helpful, not just for school, but life. Changed my way of thinking!
Boyle was a good online instructor. Tests were long essays, and he tends to take of points for not expanding enough. His lectures made the more difficult readings easier to understand!
UHC isn't that important, and unlike some other professors he actually understands that. Doesn't really give assignments and graded easily on the one paper we had to write. Lectures can be boring, but honestly it could be so much worse.
He is very chill and easy to approach. He swears a little but nothing offensive. He puts things in very easy-to-understand terms. He wants you to understand the information he's giving you and to be able to use it in real life. There's no homework but there's a lot of online reading that isn't completely necessary but helps you to get it better.
Boyle very intentionally made this class super easy. Very low work load. Lecture does get a little repetitive and you wont have to go to every class.
Took Boyle for Science and Humanities debate for UHC 100. very nice man, wasn't a tough grader for a GEP (UHC) class. Let us out early most often. Chill cool guy. Got out with a chill A.
This was an very intellectually stimulating course, but he tries to make everything as clear as possible. He graded test easily. No attendance policy, but it would be difficult to do well if you don't go because the lectures are jam packed full of information. I would highly recommend this course to anyone. Only book needed is the Phantom Tollbooth
He's a nice and funny guy. The topics discussed were pretty confusing but really not a lot of work, if you show up you pass.
He is the best professor/teacher I have every had. He is very clear with his lectures and makes them extremely interesting. never have I wanted to learn so much in a class. He gives all his readings online on Blackboard and goes over them in class. He really cares mostly that you learn, rather than just getting a good grade.
Three tests in the class, that's it. No homework or anything. Boyle gives very concise lectures that are actually interesting and fairly straightforward/easy to digest. Tests are all 10 questions long, essay/short answer format. You have a week to do it. Not a hard class really, but you will fail this class if you aren't a self-motivating student.
Attendance is not required but it would be hard to do well if you don't go to class. He goes over a lot of notes and explains it further in class. There are only 3 tests and they were all take home and an optional paper at the end. If you go to class and pay attention is should be a fairly easy class.
Loved him! His lectures are so interesting and he builds in some repetition for some of the more complex ideas. I took him for a freshman seminar class and we very rarely had homework, just three papers that weren't graded too harshly. This is a good class to take if you're somewhat interested in philosophy but it won't be your major or minor.
Super awesome guy and the content of the class is actually pretty interesting! Definitely go to class and pay attention! I recommend printing off the notes in advanced and then writing in stuff he says! The tests are take home but are far from easy if you never go to class.
Took this class freshman year for my honors course. While most of his classes were him lecturing, he did so in a way that made it interesting. I don't know if its just because of the course I was taking, but he also made the information relevant to our lives. Basically no homework, except like 3 papers that are pretty easy if you go to class.
Critical Thinking was probably the hardest class I had in terms of material but it was easy to understand because of the professor. TAKE GOOD NOTES. The only textbook you need is Phantom Tollbooth & you don't even really need it because he explains every reading in his class. Tests are take home. Write a good paragraph or more on each question.
Most interesting class and teacher I had this semester. Lectures could get stuffy sometimes, but they were super in depth and interesting. Take home tests that he gave you a week on, answered any questions about, and had graded a week later. Don't sit in the front row unless you want intense eye contact and a loud, booming voice every class.
Mr. Boyle is definitely one of the smartest people I have ever met. Some of the things he talks about will probably go over your head, but he doesn't expect you to learn everything. He's a pretty easy grader as long as he can tell you put in effort
Terrible grader. Seems very nice when you go to office hours, and then he'll tear apart your self esteem all over essay tests and make you feel like you need to drop out. His lecture format is difficult to stay engaged and not easy to follow.
The course grade is made up of 3 tests (2 plus the final) all tests are take home though including the final. You get over a week to do them. Take good notes because some test questions as for specific examples of things he talked about in class. You can probably pass the class without ever attending lecture but it would be pushing it.
You'll get a workout in this class because Dr. Boyle will write stuff on the board behind the projector cart, and he won't move it, so you'll have to constantly get up to actually see what he wrote. Also, for a class called "critical thinking," we do zero critical thinking. We are just asked to regurgitate his lectures onto the test.
I actually learned a good amount from this class, surprisingly. All of his tests are take-home and you have a week to complete them. As long as you give clear answers that prove you know the information, you will get an A. He is a tough grader though. There is no homework, just test. You have to attend class, all information is given there.
I honestly took Philosophy as a gen ed. If you're not really into that type of material I advise taking another gen ed to complete the requirement. The only points you get are for 3 tests plus an optional paper. (You don't get any points for attendance and you don't get points for the final class meeting either) If you miss lecture, you're screwed.
He actually cares about his students. He definitely knows what he's talking about, & explains things well. He kind of yells during lectures and grunts a lot which can be distracting used to, but easily ignored. He doesn't believe in textbooks, all readings are online. The material is super fascinating & if you put effort in, you'll do fine. Easy A
Michael Boyle is a very good professor of philosophy. You can tell he is a very intelligent individual and knows the material that he teaches very well from teaching it over likely a long period of time. I learned more about philosophy and how to think well in this class than I have in any other. Bravo, Michael.
I got no lower than a 99 on every test with minimal effort. I just went into the notes he gave us on blackboard and practically wrote word for word what he wrote. It was time consuming because they are long answers. Just split it up into two days. All tests are done at home and given a full week before they are due.
Boyle is SO thoughtful of his students. He will let us out of class early if its bad weather to give us more time to get to our next classes. He is quirky but cares a lot about what he teaches and his students. Also it is NOT difficult to get an A in his class if you attend regularly and pay attention, and put some effort into what you turn in.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER AND CLASS AT MSU! The lectures are very interesting, funny & easy to understand. You do have to show up or you might get lost, but he does give a recap about what was said the day before. His tests are VERY easy and there is always an extra credit question on there. He gives out readings (you don't need to do) and no homework!
He's really passionate about the subject, which makes it really interesting to learn about. He explains things thoroughly and clearly. The tests (3) are the only things that make up your grade, but they are super easy if you go to class and take notes.
Michael Boyle is one of my all-time favorite professors, his lectures are very concise, informative, and actually very enjoyable/ thought-provoking. he only gives you 3 tests and as long as you take notes they are not that bad, also when you ask a question he gives you really good feedback, is very respectful, and doesn't make you feel stupid.
I took one of Dr. Boyle's classes online and I don't have much to complain about. As others have pointed out, the points of the course consist of only three exams/papers. Each paper has ten questions from the readings and can be quite difficult. However, Dr. Boyle grades very generously if you put in the work and don't plagiarize.
There are three tests and those are the only grades. Watching the lectures he post every week is the easiest way to do well on the tests. There is no book needed for this course he provides all the reading material which is partially beneficial when it comes to the tests.
I expected this course to be boring and difficult, but Dr. Boyle is an amazing educator! The organization of the class is wonderful and so engaging. He taught us valuable ways to understand language and symbolism that stick with me to this day, about 3 years later! Definitely catch the lectures if you like learning new things.
Professor Boyle is obviously a knowledgeable professor. However, his lecture style is grueling and by far the worst experience I've had at Missouri State so far. Although the content itself is interesting, he basically yells the information at you. Whenever I go to his in-person lectures I feel like I'm being screamed at rather than than taught.
I have really enjoyed Dr. Boyle's class, He gives very interesting and insightful lectures on various topics from the Greek classics to the modern age of philosophy. He also has a great dry sense of humor. His tests can be a bit difficult if you miss a lecture, but luckily he posts all required readings onto blackboard making it easier to catch up.
Great course, Professor Boyle is knowledgeable and helpful. Highly recommend taking anything you can with him.
Mr. Boyle's class was pretty easy, almost everything he spoke about was accessible on his blackboard, so if you couldn't make it to class, it was pretty much fine. There were only like 5 things he graded on the whole semester. The one thing I did not enjoy is that he basically screams the lectures at you. He talks very loud about boring subjects.
Professor Boyle was a good professor and made the class very easy for us. I did not like how he set up the class and how he taught, I felt like it was very disorganized and it was hard for me to keep up if I missed class. I liked the class because it was easy, but if it were a harder class I would definitely struggle.
I think professor Boyle is very knowledgeable about the subject, but the format of this class online was not ideal. Also, don't take this as a block class. I ended up having to watch like 3+ hours worth of video lectures a week. It was doable, but the lecture videos are boring and hard to follow. There are also only 3 grades for the entire class
I enjoyed philosophy with Dr. Boyle. His lectures are amazing and easy to take notes on. He breaks everything down and gives examples that help us understand better! He doesn't give out any homework and he respects the fact that students have other classes. Your grade in here depends on 3 tests but as long as you use notes the tests are easy.
I skipped class 2/3 of the time and still got an A. He has the most annoying voice ever and does an awful job of explaining things even when you ask. He posts all of his notes on blackboard and the final is just an anonymous exit survey that isn't worth any points. Easy class, awful professor. I don't suggest it but it's not the worst gen ed.
I think Professor Boyle is an extremely intelligent professor, and if you do take a class with him as your teacher, you will clearly notice that he knows the material like the back of his hand. The biggest issue is that he teaches like everyone else knows the material in the same way he does and understands exactly what he just said.
If you like to skip class often, DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! I think I missed like 2-3 lectures this semester and I felt like I had missed the entire semester. Your entire grade is based on the tests only, but luckily they are open note so get ready to take lots of them. Super chill guy and knows what he's doing.
In my class our only grades were tests. It's important that you go to lectures even though attendance is not mandatory. If you don't go to class or do the readings you will not be able to pass the tests. He goes really fast and doesn't stop for questions. I recommend doing the readings before class in order to best understand him.
Took this as a Gen Ed but loved his class. Only three grades a semester, three 100 point take home tests that you have a week to do. Pretty easy and laid back professor; he is very funny and sarcastic. Very intelligent but just make sure to pay attention to lectures.
Not going to lie, some of the topics in this class are going to be a bit confusing at first, but if you talk to him and ask questions, he will help and explain them to you. He is lenient, kind funny and sarcastic. There are only three tests and they are all short answer. This might scare many of you, but you have a week to answer ten questions.
This class is relatively easy, but take very detailed notes. Notes are posted online and he makes sure to point out content that will be on the test. The only grades are tests, but they are take-home and open-note and you get a week to work on them. Make sure to come to class because test content is discussed that isn't in the posted notes.
Professor Boyle was absolutely great. His entire class is 3 tests, which are 10 questions that are essay responses, which you have a week to do. It's really important to come to class because material that will be on the test is discussed every single class. He lectures in a clear way, conveys the point well, and is charismatic.
Michael is interesting. Extremely lecture heavy and you're entirely graded on 3 exams. You MUST go to every class if you want a decent grade. He doesn't use a textbook, but he provides an absurd amount of readings to follow his lectures. He isn't a bad professor, just be ready to actually put some work in to fully understand the concepts he teaches
Only graded on three tests the whole semester, ten short answer questions each. Everything can be gathered from the lecture notes he put together; I rarely read the source material or watched the lectures, and got an A on each test. His notes are clear and I learned a lot. He seems kind and understanding. Easy A if you're good at writing.
Mr. Boyle is able to summarize difficult concepts in easy language. He is through in explanations. In my class tests usually had extra credit options, however, your grade is based on three exams. Prof. Boyle is a great instructor and I recommend.
I loved Dr. Boyle for this class and am taking another of his classes this semester. He's easy to understand and is clearly very passionate about the subjects he teaches. The entire grade is 3 tests, but if you pay attention during lectures you'll be fine. I did get hand cramps though (think writing speeds of AP English exams to finish on time).
Dr. Boyle is a total hoot. He's clearly extremely passionate about philosophy and does an amazing job at making the lectures interesting. The whole grade is based on 3 exams (part multiple choice part essay) but he's a fairly lenient grader on the essays. You MUST go to every lecture you can and take good notes to excel though
Great Professor! I had trouble in the beginning understanding his lectures. What helped me was recording the lectures using OneNote. Once he allowed me to record the lectures it got easier to study and catch up with the rest of the class. Overall, the material he goes over is very eye-opening and deepened my understanding of the meaning of language
Professor Boyle is a good professor, and he clearly wants the students to learn the information he is so passionate about. This class is relatively easy as long as you show up to lecture. The only grades for the class are 3 tests (part multiple choice, part essay), which may seem bad, but he usually provides a study guide and extra credit.
Despite the class being nominally about a "debate" based on the name, he just stood up there and talked at us the entire time. I can count on one hand the amount of times he has asked people in the class their input. He also speaks really fast and often tells us we should have something in our notes before immediately switching topics.
Poor structure. Only 3 grades in entire class are the tests - not even attendance points. Repeats himself multiple times each week. Nothing but lectures - cover abt everything in the "required" readings. Hard to follow along/be interested in, even for a Gen Ed class. Lectures sometimes funny, but rarely. Go to class: not everything posted online.
Boyle was amazing. His class if very lecture heavy but as long as you take thorough notes, you should be good on tests. He goes over readings in class and I got away with not reading outside and still passed with an A. He always makes the lectures interesting and is a funny professor in general. Be ready for essays on exams.
Professor Boyle makes complex philosophy concepts engaging. Although the class is lecture-heavy with 3 exams, his clear explanations and helpful study resources like Unstuck AI make it manageable. Attend every class and you'll do well.
He only puts three grades in the gradebook, and they are all tests. The tests are easy as long as you watch the lecture videos and read the readings he posts weekly! I did good on two out of the three tests I took and that's what dropped my grade a lot. I do wish he had more assignments to help with points or at least extra credit.
The UHC 110 is difficult if you don't pay close attention to the lectures, however he gives good study guides. Make sure to study!
Cares abt students. No hw. Lectures are boring + repeat material often. Final grade = 40% Exam I + 40% Exam II + 20% Final Paper. Gives 10 options for exam essay topics and picks 5 randomly. Out of the 5 topics, u select 2 topics to answer sub-questions abt (can be short answers). Idk what I wrote half the time and got As so his grading's lenient.
