*STAY AWAY FROM THE COLORS*
No Comments
dr.brown assigns the most confusing readings known to man but please take him if you'd like 150 page readings over something you don't know about. he never makes girls cry (not) or make you feel stupid in front of the entire lecture
****, don't take him
Don't take this professor. He is a very poor instructor.
Dr. Brown is EXTREMLY hard-stay away
Brown is a philosopher-GOD. Any morons who trash him have garbage for brains! He is wiser and deeper than the mountains of Montana.
Very very difficult teacher. He will challenge you more than probably any other teacher, and he knows his stuff. However, he is a tough grader and is quite hard to understand sometimes.
If you're not up for a challenge, go somewhere else. If you are interested in being pushed to be a better thinker, stick around. Brown's tough but quite good - ask students who care about more than just completing the core. He really isn't all THAT hard.
Dog all you want on Brown, he's a fantastic teacher, he is an actual teacher, something hard to find nowadays. You will definitiely learn in his class but some work and effort will be involved.
If you want an easy class, don't take Dr. Brown. However, I learned a lot in his class and I have found it to be very helpful in other parts of my life. In the long run, it is an excellent class to take.
If you are a philosophy major then you need to take Brown. The class is tough but I actually learned a lot. My advice is to meet with him and get to know him. He is extremely helpful and wont let you fail if you make an effort to work with him.
HE ROCKS
He's a jerk.
Brown was one of the only two actual educators I've had at Creighton University. All other professors teach in the sense that they give information to be regurgitated. Brown encouraced and required independent thinking...the world needs more Browns.
If you're thinking about becoming a PHL major, take him. If not, don't waste his or your fellow students' time. If you take him once, then you should take Metaphysics and P. of Mind or Ind. Readings w/ him as well.
This rugged Montana sage will take your mind on an intense, philosophic journey while mesmerising you with his lumberjack good looks.
he is very good
Brown's assignments aren't difficult, but the class requires a large amount of originality and aptitude. If you want to learn about Philosophy, Brown is your man. He is a once-in-a-lifetime prof; every student should be required to take him. REAL philosophy.
He won't coddle you and he definately makes you think. If you think that he's a jerk than you're too sensative and probably need his class that much more. Remember, he is trying to teach you to think philosophically, not make you feel good. Everyone should take him or a prof like him.
Dr. Michael Brown will embarass you, humiliate you, and bring you to an understanding of how little rational thought you've ever engaged in before. PHL320 was the most amazing class I've ever taken. Every student at this university should be forced to take him once. He'll chisel you out of steel.
Kind of an ****! Beware!
Kinda scary.
Brown may be tough, but you benefit from it in the end! If you're as enthusiastic as I was about Philosophy and argument, you'll love his class. Brown is intriguing and challenging, but try not to place too much importance on his personal views. He tends to be very frank, especially when he's talking about current events or politics.
If you think Brown is a "jerk" or "condescending," you've got the mental stability of a four-year-old.
He's great! He's a little scary but definately keeps us entertained. He is also extremely smart and passionate about philosophy. I enjoy this class.
if you want to learn philosphy, this is the class for you. if you want to satisfy the PHL requirement, this is not the class for you
Though clearly highly intelligent, Brown is arrogant and elitist. The class is very difficult to follow. DO NOT TAKE if you arent super-interested in philosophy. Also, our ENTIRE grade was based on our final exam... very very stressful, especially when you didnt understand a day of class.
"The unexamined life is not worth living," Socrates said, and I believe that. Dr. Brown's class is tough at first because you are thrown into the pool without any prior experience in swimming. REMEMBER: DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Create study groups! Be open and optimistic. You will learn a lot from this course with the right attitude and commitment.
hes hard, but funny. he came into my sandwich shop every day during the summer and never remembered meeting me though (sigh...)
Yes, he is intense. If you do not take your education seriously, then why are you in college? 20,000 dollars a year burning a hole in your pants? This class is open to all ideas, just be ready to back them up. This was one of my favorite classes at CU and I would highly recomend it to anyone. He is not elitist. He does CHALLENGE you to think.
Brown is the best at the Socratic method - which not everyone will appreciate. He challenges the class with questions. If someone answers, he refutes them, sometimes harshly. Finally no one wants to answer. We're not used to the method and take it personally. Don't. Brown will MAKE you think. Philosophy will MAKE you think. You'll be better for it.
The thing about Dr. Brown is that he hates Creighton: "It's not a real University" because we're "only interested in making slaves to, to who? ConAgra Foods!"
Did Brown make me cry? Yes, but I came out a better person at the end of the class for it. He's frustrating to those that can't follow his rapid fire logic, but he is willing to sit down and help EVERYONE who chooses to come to him. He grades hard and grills harder, but even his kids have to back up going to the movies with logical argument.
Ethics, Stands apart as one my favorite profs at CU. He had me laughing every day. Something about yelling points and challenging stupid answers from folks just made my day. I looked forward to this class more than any other.(Chem major here) If you have a brain, take him. Class is all discussion and goes toward the truth, not mind slavery A+ IMB
Fun for the analytical. I was left wondering the whole semester what the hell my grade was going to be since it was based on one test and one essay. Lectures leading up to it are pointless to attend as no attendence is and a discussion paper makes up for class discussion. Flip side, non-conforming and interesting to listen to.
One of my favorite profs at CU. Brown's method is what? Unusual. And hard. But it works. Plus, he's one of just a few profs here willing to shoot down students when they say something stupid. Take him if you dare, and only if you're willing to think a little.
Without a doubt, the worst professor I have ever had. If you have no previous philosophy knowledge before Brown, do not take him, as he has no human knowledge of how to teach a single class. Condescending, sardonic, with an ego that stifles the students as they attempt to understand the confused words that he fails to communicate.
If you want a professor to hold your hand, talk slowly, and treat you like some coddled private college ninny, then don't take a class with Brown. I have taken no less than five of his classes and I would compare his teaching style to that of a P.E. coach. So, if you're a big blob of oversensitive jello, stay away.
brown is hilarious.
Who could actually like this guy? I did fine in his class, but he is a terrible teacher. He will dislike you unless you show immense interest in Philosophy and show up to his office hours, email him questions etc. Readings are mundane, and he can't explain them. He will use the entire class to attempt to answer one question yet he won't even do it.
I think Brown gets on here and writes his own reviews to get people to take his class. HE IS TERRIBLE! DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE MISERABLE. He is arrogant, and loves to disagree with anything and everything. He has such a high opinion of himself, its sickening. He will expect everyone to be in awe after every statement he makes. muy mal
I would not recommend him to anyone unless you enjoy listening to some moron who thinks he is a genius rattle on for an hour about things that most people could really care less about anyways. Class is boring, readings are so boring you won't be able to force yourself to do it, and he is a horrible professor who will teach you absolutely nothing.
If you can, take another professor! I came out of the class knowing less than I did when I went into it. I dreaded class everyday. Readings are boring and class is even worse. Tests are difficult only because you have no idea what he's asking because the wording is so difficult. Definitely do not recommend him.
I hated going to class everyday. The only reason I went was to keep up my attendance points. HE IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. I couldn't get any interest in class. I had questions, but everytime I wanted to ask one he would keep rattling on and on about one question for the entire class period and not being very clear at all. Take another professor
Brown is a philosopher. Iff you would like to learn philosophy take Brown. If you just want to learn about philosophy go ahead and take another teacher.
the class wsn't all that difficult. i pulled a solid b without trying too hard. not that bad of a class if you can stand listening to the worlds most pompous man for 3 hours a week. i didn't have a problem with him being mean like a lot seemed to have. he also has very obvious favorites. avoid if possible
Dr. Brown is a good professor. He isn't ever overly mean, you just can't be too sensitive. If he calls you out on something, he does so only to help you learn. He will make you think and really consider the material. It's not even a lot of work, you just have to CARE.
Ugh. I was interested and thought I was good at philosophy going into this class but I was wrong. He was a good teacher of it but he had a tough time relating it back to students. Make sure to read and reread the assignments, I usually had to read them 3-4 times each to fully comprehend them and even then I was usually wrong about what they meant.
If you're in his class, hang on. I didn't like his class until I was three weeks into it. He's a funny guy and he's not half as bad as from what I hear. His quizzes and exams were straightforward and not that difficult as long as I read the chapters 3-5 times. Don't bs. That's all. Great class.
By far one of the best classes I have ever had. This made the old college stigma for "changing the way I see the world" real for me. He understands that philosophy is only what it means to you, even if he does now show it. You must read though and try and participate. You might be afraid but seriously, it is worth it.
I took a metaphysics class and a philosophy of the mind class from Dr. Brown many years ago. He is a true philsopher, he questions everything, with wit, with intellectual passion, and with a penchant for perfection (which some of you mistake for "arrogance"). I will never forget this man. He is a misunderstood genius and a true scholar...a gem!
It was an awesome class and arguing about any point gets you an A for participation. Tests aren't too bad as long as you copy whats on the board and read the book.
Awful. Avoid if possible.
He is impossible to understand, and treats students incredibly poorly.
Just AWFUL. AVOID AVOID AVOID. There is no point in going to class because all he does is rant the entire time or go off on random tangents. His tests still seem impossible even when all the readings are actually done. Two papers, a midterm and a final, plus random pop quizzes that make zero sense.
This man is CRAZY!!! I have never been challenged so hard mentally before. Keep an open mind and he will change the way you see the world.Actually DO the readings and take notes. This will save your butt! Don't say anything unless you know it 100%,if he shoots you down...just smile and try not to be distracted by his inability to match his clothes
A difficult teacher who goes off on random rants. I would avoid and go with another philosophy prof. He gives random quizzes and the first few weeks, he actually gives homework. After that it is just the midterm and final. The final is worth 45% of your grade. So read and pay attention!
This is the worst teacher I've ever had. I have straight A's in the nursing school and at the middle of the semester I had a C in this class. Avoid at all costs it could cost you your GPA.
Dr. Brown's class is not difficult as long as you understand the material and he goes over it several times. He is not as bad as everyone is claiming him to be. He is a good professor and maybe shouldn't be teaching a lower level philosophy class. I personally really liked him and it's definitley worth your money to take this class.
Metaphysics - hardest class in the philosophy major if you take Brown. Makes it much more difficult than it needs to be. In my estimation, he purposefully confuses students to remind himself how smart he is. Please don't judge the PHL department by his teaching.
Brown is a sweet man, you must look beyond the "know it all" exterior-give him a chance, and truly listen to what he says and it might change your outlook on so many things. Do all the readings on time and pay attention in class and you should be good. He is not the most organized person in the world, but he really knows what he is talking about-
Professor Brown is the kind of professor you take if you're serious about being a philosophy major. He will challenge and enlighten those interested in philosophy more than most professors in the department, but if your goal for his class is to remain passive in the learning process and skate by, you probably won't enjoy his class.
Dr. Brown is a nice guy, he is open to student suggestions with the class and will adjust the schedule so that he's not cramming things in. He's kind of a harsh grader on tests. We have 1 a month, and an Essay. The class is usually really really boring but you can tell he is trying to make it exciting.
Brown is a difficult teacher, there's now doubt about that. But if you put effort into his class you will learn more about Philosophy and yourself than you'd expect. He doesn't spoon feed you any information, he makes sure you learn for yourself. I only recommend him to hard workers that will put in the effort to succeed
BEST TEACHER I had at Creighton. Knows his stuff and will dramatically change the way you think. Take advantage of office hours to talk with him in person and let him know you are making an effort to understand. He is extremely helpful and giving to his students. Sublime guy. Wish I had taken more classes from him.
Very interesting, but I dont recommend taking his class
He is absolutely useless. I really tried in his class but he is just awful. He miserably fails at presenting the material on a level students can understand and is just plain boring. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Brown is frustrating. He talks/writes with unnecessary adjectives that serve to confuse you. Had to read entire Republic of Plato. Ridiculous ideas, rambles on and on, unfair tests, he's disconnected with the world. Somehow I was his favorite student but just no. No.
Dr. Brown inspired me to become a philosophy minor. Most people dont get Dr. Brown because theyre not used to opening their minds to new ways of thinking. If youre just looking to satisfy the core, this is probably not the class for you, but if youre willing to engage the material, you will love Dr. Brown.
I never had any idea what was going on. The tests are impossible, even with the guide he gives you. Brown is a very kind and funny guy but is incredibly frustrating in terms of the material covered. Take him if you are a philosophy major, but if you need to keep your GPA high, look elsewhere.
I took his intro to philosophy class, metaphysics, and epistemology classes in 1991 and 1992. What I learned from Professor Brown comprise some of the most thought provoking and treasured lessons I took away from college. Even after all of these years I still reflect back on the material. I agree with the other reviewer. He is truly a gem.
Worst professor at Creighton. Not clear, horrible at relating to students, and tests are almost impossible. Never take a class by this man. Absolutely horrible; save yourself.
He is very vague in lectures and doesn't clearly answer questions about the content he assigns. Also, he speaks in questions, which is confusing because philosophy is also very "question-like" and goes on tangents about how the class is ignorant. Don't ask too many questions, or he will start assigning readings to answer questions.
You have to pay attention and read the material. It is a lot of material, but all he asks is that you minimally understand it because it is an intro to PHL. Before I took this class, I regarded PHL as an unimportant discipline. Now I am very interested in it and plan on reading more on it. Note: in this class you actually do philosophy
Dr Brown had one of the few classes that I actually enjoyed going to. Sure, it was difficult to wrap my head around some of the topics, and if you want an easier class, then do what you can to get something easier. But if you want a really fascinating class, a true introduction to what philosophy is like with above-the-average content, take Brown.
My fave prof of all time so far. he is an amazing mind and you can see it working as he goes about the lecture. he knows more about philosophy than any of the other professors and the class dips into REAL philisophical discussion. if your looking for an easy class go away this is for people that want to open their minds Go in for office hours
His tests where hard but he graded on knowledge of the subject rather than the people or spelling, which was nice. Also helped us recreate a syllabus and grading system that worked better for our class. He's hard to follow at times but as long as you do the readings and understand them, this class can be passed easily.
Tough class. Went to offices hours and put in a lot of time and still had a hard time grasping the concepts. Only take this class if you want to learn how to have a philosophical discussion. Only cares about students who understand what is going on and who participate in class.
Dr. Brown is very eccentric and means well, but he goes off on lots of tangents and gets confusing at times. His tests don't match well with what he emphasizes in lecture, but if you pay attention, read, and get creative with papers, you will do well on them. I think he's probably better in advanced courses when students already have a foundation.
Dr. Brown is a phenomenal teacher. If you are willing to put the work in, you will find yourself learning about the world in a way you never expected.
Brown seems like an easy going guy but his quizzes and tests are very challenging. He grades the quizzes fairly easy but not the tests. Also papers are quite hard.
He was hands down the HARDEST teacher I've ever taken. I have no respect for this man. He told me that in the first week of class 20% of his class will fail his class. Understanding his way of taking is like reading some Shakespeare novel. He picks favorites. For tests will pick lines out of reading that you needed to memorize. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
Dr. Brown is a nice guy but he's incredibly hard to understand. His lectures are all over the place and very confusing. His tests are hard because you don't actually learn much but essays are pretty easy to get a decent grade on. Going to his class is very hard because of how long and boring it is.
This professor was very strict and a tough grader.
Really bad class. Teaches it like it's a high-level class when everyone there is doing it for the Magis credit. Assigned 600-page books to read in a week and tests were not very relevant to the material. I think he got in trouble for being too hard so he changed the entire syllabus with 3 weeks left and basically gave up as a professor. Don't take
Very hard to understand because he tends to talk in circles. The discussions would always go into a rabbit hole of thoughts without any explanation of how it related to the material. He refuses to put our real grades on blueline so none of us knew what our real grades were. Very hard to work with.
Prof Brown is a really nice and cool guy outside of class. Class discussions were very confusing and do not relate to the tests at all. The tests are VERY specific to the reading. He wants you to really dive deep into philosophy, but most are taking it only for MAGIS. Great guy, but horrible class. I have no experience with philosophy & struggled.
Prof Brown is very intelligent but difficult to understand because his wording is so advanced. He makes his course very rigorous even though everyone has to take this class. He also completely changed the entire syllabus halfway through the semester because all the students were doing so poorly. He was somewhat helpful outside of the classroom.
Dr. Brown is deceiving. He seems nice when he invites students to share opinions on texts read in class, but then quickly will try to poke holes in any argument. Not a terrible thing, but with this way of teaching it seems as if you learn nothing. You can do well on tests, papers, quizzes, but honestly this class (and PHL) is a waste of time.
Do not take this class. Professor Brown seems to be very intelligent in his field, but is not suitable for teaching. He makes the intro to Philosophy an extremely difficult class despite the vast majority taking it for the Magis credit. He seems like a cool guy but his class on the other hand is miserable.
Not very clear in what is expected at all. Tough grader, not the nicest of people.
Brown's test are very confusing and he never gives study guides. With it being philosophy, he always gives his own opinion and thinks he is always right. He tries to be funny, but it just ends up being rude. You have to attend class, and he relies a lot on class participation. The final is a long paper and his grading scale can be confusing too.
Really well educated, but was hard to grasp concepts as a freshman student new to philosophy. Wished it was a little bit easier to grasp at first and more practice with pre-essay on final exam.
Absolutely terrible teacher. Dr. Brown does not make philosophy interesting to learn, he just does the same lecture format and discussions that are very difficult for new students to follow. For our final, he said the only way to study is by answering 13 different essay prompts thoroughly throughout finals week (regardless of other exams).
Assigned heavy and complicated readings, tests were hard and usually not multiple choice. He would do "attendance pop quizzes" to see who was present and who was not. Used complicated vocab, as well as hard assignments. He did do extra credit work if needed, but I would not recommend him.
One of the worst professors I have had. He expects you to understand a very high level reading right away, and rather than helping the student understand the book in class, he speaks in circles and ends up talking about stuff that doesn't help your understanding of the material. He also picks out what is wrong in questions you have and tell you so.
Extremely difficult to follow. He starts with a main idea and then ends up talking about something completely different & is VERY hard to follow, expects you to grasp difficult topics w/little help. He's also not good with technology & never set up a Blueline course for my class so you have no idea what you grade is until the end of the semester.
The class could be a stimulating & interesting discussion. But Brown doesn't make this class easily digestible for students. Many people struggle with philosophy, but it was a battle to know what was going on in this class. Brown made me feel stupid for struggling with the material. I would have dropped this class if I didn't need it for credit.
Grilled me for 15 minuets for a better example of something because I was "avoiding the real issues in life" and "taking the easy way out" Gives definitions that are way too wordy and have double negatives. On a test I crossed out his double negative so it made more sense to me and he put a question mark next to my annotations???
I took professor Brown for summer class. It was awful! He expected us to understand concepts very quickly and without an extra help from himself. Practices quizes were nothing like the actual quizes. Very belittling when he marks your work, making you feel stupid for not understanding. Very heavy class, boring and honestly didn't learn a thing
He is very smart but is much better for grad classes, for an intro class he way way too hard
Brown seemed to have no clear teaching style. What he did each and every class was confuse us. He does not explain material and expects us to know it as closely as he does. He jumps all over the place, never really making any sense. Unless you teach yourself the material of the course outside of class, good luck on the final exam.
Worst teacher I've ever had hands down. Often times made statements that made students very uncomfortable, including telling students that if he wanted he could teach the class naked if he wanted. Graded on 3 tests with the final being graded as 60% of the grade. Class discussions are hard to follow and readings are important for tests.
I had to fight tooth and nail to get the grade I did in the class. Brown is so arrogant, and his classes are pretty much for him to hear himself talk. He did not really have a set grading system, so I found that going in for office hours and letting him ramble on about whatever nonsensical topic and then reminding him how smart he is is the key.
