Excellent teacher. When you leave you know the subject.
EXCELLENT math teacher. You WILL know calculus.
rambles about his egotistical personal views
not that easy, goes super fast, and tests are so long
he's a really good math professor. he's always there to help you out if you need it
Great professor, always willing to help with questions, especially if you go to his office hours.(good looking)
He is very helpfull and explains very well. So long as you do homework, which he doesn't collect, you will do well in the class. Many people dropped but it is not that hard class. He is really an excellent teacher!
easy clear and concise. gets the job done, you leave understanding the material.
Talks fast, but will stop and explain until you understand him. He knows what he is talking about and knows you don't, so he is more than willing to give extra help. Taught me stats so he must be good.
Teaches very quickly, Tests drawn from notes not necessarily homework, very detail oriented gives very little partial credit you either know it or you don't
He is the tony little of Math. This guy is excited! Hard as hell class, but I learned A LOT and worked my butt off. I barely passed but was so proud of that grade. He is totally helpful, and totally dedicated to his job! Excellent teacher for a yucky clas
Perfect clarity, energetic lectures. Very willing to help. The most exciting math class I've ever had.
Explains material clearly, but spends too much time talking about his background and political views. Very energetic teaching style.
strictly graded on testes and quizzes... for whom you want improve their GPA, don't take him
God i hated his class. I was so lost most of the time and he always seem to be a smartass. I didnt learn anything and had to drop....
Very energetic. Very, very thorough. He shows several ways do things. Will spend lots of time with you outside his office. Gives chance of 108% on tests, so it makes it easier. Talks way too much about nonsense though. You learn all about his family
Excellent math teacher. Definitely recommend. However you must do your homework and keep up. You can't get behind in this class. I did and failed it. Even with all the extra credit and help provided. What can I say, it was my fault. I slacked off.
Very hard class. Didnt learn a thing. Sometimes very cocky. Many did drop (including me) and made me hate trig.
He is very upbeat and clear. He has no tolerance for lazy and incompetent people. Like any math class you just have to keep up with homework. He is also good about sticking to the syllabus. He talks alot but he's hot so who cares??
Warning: Arrogent, demoralizing, and handsome! The only people who stayed in the class had Trig already. Talks too fast and will only entertaine questions during office hours. Makes too many assumptions about students. Not a teacher. Narcissist!
Words can not express how unbelievably horrible this man is at teaching. He talks too much, which when he says it he sprays it..eww. He is totally cocky, and brilliance is not one of his virtues. You will drop this class, you will hate math...
Absolutely great teacher, absolute huge ****. I had to bite my tounge many times in his class because of his opinion on things but an incredibly smart math professor. I dont think i could have learned more from anyone else.
has zero tolerance for idiots... if you are an idiot dont take this class, straightforward "maddox-type" philosophy to teaching and real life... it is delightful when he berates the idiocy of some people
doesn't care how well you know the math, if you make small arithmatic errors the grade goes down the toilet
very pompous...thinks his way is the RIGHT and BEST way. he labeled my friend and i cheaters because we collaborated on a take home quiz together on the phone. hello?! if his class wasnt so confusing and fast paced we wouldnt need each other's help

Such a cutie but could be way cuter if he kept his mouth shut.

Criticizes everyone else and everything they do that he doesn't.Didn't learn a thing but his life story!!Tells the most ridiculous stories ever!!Thinks he's always right!Any good comments here are prob. from him!
this teacher thinks he's the shi*t at teaching math! if you're one minute late u can't turn in your quiz and you'll get a zero! dont take him!
I thought this guy was awesome! Everyone learns differently, but his teaching style was very effective for me. As long as you keep up, and do well on the quizzes, the tests are easy! He is willing to help, and explains things very clearly.
His class is hard but as long as u do the quizzes & test you'll do ok. I don't like his teaching style. He talks about ridiculous things & thinks his opinions are always right & the only thing thats right. He can be a really jerk!

i completely agree with the person below... this guy is unreal. His grading is inconsistent, and he takes insane amounts of points off when minor errors are made. asking him to look over a test that he already graded is completely useless. dont take him

Mr. Brown is one of the greatest math professors I have ever had. The problem everyone who has rated him so far seeems to have is that they are looking for an easy 'A'. Unfortunately, you won't find one in his class, because he knows how to teach.
He is awesome! I learned so much from him. Granted his stories were wasting time, I managed to get a B in his class when I thought I was going to fail. I remember everything from his class and he is helping me with trig now (even tho I'm not in his cls
He is one of the wrost teachers i have ever had. He gets mad at people when they ask for clarification, he thinks its an insult. Dont take him whatever you do. Not helpful, very very hard & thinks his way is the only way.
He is an AWFUL teacher and is incredibly annoying. Mr. Brown spends more than half of the class time ranting and raving about his own extreme personal opinions. If anyone rebuts, he gets more and more stubborn and digs in his heels. Do not take him!

very clear in explaining things. dont take if you want an easy A. Best math teacher ive had at mesa so far.
full of himself
Very difficult subject. Understands well and does a good job of explaining. Class is set up with two test and take home quizes. Not the class for an easy A.
I have had Brown in the past. This course didn't seem to reflect what I remember of his teaching and grading style. Things could have been explained more clearly. Great instructor for lower level courses. Anything above calc I steer clear.
Good at explaining things, a bit of a stickler for tradiness. His tests aren't hard, but they take alot of time to finish. Fair person, but very egotistical. And for some reason it always looks like he never finished brushing his teeth
please do not take this teacher. he is a horrible math teacher he gets mad at people who come in 1 minute late and wont accept your quizes. no help at all...expects you to know so much.... worst math teacher ever!
I took math 150&119. He is Grrrrreat person and prof. His lecture is very clear and he is very organized and that was what I liked most.Test is very easy if you study and did well on quizzes. He gives out quizzes every wk. and that really make you study!!
took brown for math 96..he was alright in that class so i decided to take him for trig.. big mistake.. egotistical, makes you feel dumb for asking questions, higher the math class the worse he gets
Stats is a hard subject to grasp and he does it so well. By far the best math teacher I've had. Very clear and thorough. He does not give his grade away, he is meticulous and demanding but it is rewarding in the end. Possible to get an A, I did!
Brown is an okay teacher. He's clear with the material but his tests are hard. You have to work incredibly hard in this class. Plus he discourages you at the beginning, telling you that you wont pass Calc if its the first time you're taking it.
He is one of my favorite teachers at mesa. If you have a passion for math and aren't looking for an easy A, i recommend that you take him. He explains the material well..
Worst teacher I ever had at mesa. If you don't already know the material do not take his class. He makes anyone who doesn't automatically "get" math feel like a moron.
Great teacher. Very clear.
He is hot, energetic, clear, and organized. I loved him! I noticed most of the people in class that didn't like him weren't putting forth the effort on their own either and would rather blame him for failing. I thought it was an easy A.
You can not ask HW quest. in class, it said so on syllabus. All he does is tell stories. He hates USC, people offered him money to take their math tests at UCSD. He showed up a SDSU prof. with a fancy proof. A cool guy who can not teach. He never did examples from the book.
Not a very good teacher, he doesnt make things clear & over half of the people failed or dropped his class! He is very opinionated, worst thing is he comes off as such anice helpful guy and he thinks he is, but really he is snobby and thinks you shoudl already know what hes teaching or your at fault
He is good overall. There are 13 take-home quizzes, 3 exams and 1 final (can be dropped). His tests are long, and somewhat tricky. Cal I is a tough class, so you'd better not miss any lecture.
struggled immensely, ended up dropping the class. Spoke with him, seemed liked he wanted to help, but suggested more that I should drop it. Not a good math teacher.
I TOOK PRE ALGEBRA AN GOT AN A, THIS CLASS I AM STRUGGLING. HE MAKES YOU SHOW TOO MUCH WORK. IF YOU GET THE ANSWER RIGHT HE WILL STILL TAKE POINTS OF IF YOUR WORK IS NOT SHOWN RIGHT. HE IS NOT A GOOD MATH TEACHER. I HAD TO DROP THE CLASS
He "tested at the college level in mathematics in kindergarden." If he's so smart, why isn't he doing research instead of teaching? He also gave a lecture on e and Ln, and then proceededed to tell us that there is no way to tell how old a piece of stone is (carbon dating?). Brown is full of crap.
DON"T TAKE IT
Maybe this is just because I'm only in Math 95, but he is very clear and interested in teaching. He does tell stories and makes his children sound like genius', but who isn't proud of their children? I think he is a FABULOUS teacher and i will be taking him again for 96.
He is incredible bad teacher. He tells stories that are not funnny, and he doesnt make math interesting.
Need a new way to teach. Need to give students more time to solve problems instead doing the problems himself. Could be more helpful to students if he let students have a chance to solve problem themselves. Need to stop telling lies about his childrens and his stories. Don't take his class if you want an "A". Half of the class dropped him.
Everyone seems to agree that he's not a good teacher. But they are all wrong. If you study hard enough (like every single student should) then his class would not be as hard at all. He's so good in teaching. Once you know his style of teaching, everything is going to make sense and will be so muche easier for you!!!!
the last statemnet was the teachers son or himself, lol
Are you kidding me? This guy is a joke. He is good if you pick up on math quickly. Otherwise you are better off suited with a professor who has the patience and kindness that allows you to succeed in the class.
Brown is a wonderful math teacher! He helped me to understand things about math that I have not picked up on since junior high. He has a wonderful attitude about what he does and he is always in a good mood. That helps to make the subject a little more fun.
I admit that it is not that easy to earn an A in his class. But I must say that his teaching style is very CLEAR and ORGANIZED!!!
I'm starting to think all these "He's wonderful" posts are simply Mr. Brown trying to boost his rating... I have found NO ONE on campus that has a nice thing to say about him.
Genuinely tries to help, but ends up sounding pompous. Take Mrs. Ward instead.
He has good intentions but,it may be that he has been teaching too long. Making no effort to work with the text and lectures that are too quick and all over the place, I can't recommend him. Also, his partial credit seems way off sometimes. Finally, he is not very familiar with the graphing/scientific calculator and all it's capabilities.
I wish he could not joke so much. He likes to teach too many short cuts and makes things more complicated that what they really are. I personally do not recommend him.
I got a B. I thought he was a great teacher, but the class was hard. However, he gives you practice tests!!! Which are exactly like his tests! As long as you study them it's cake. Plus he's a very fair grader gives you plenty of opportunities to succeed.
Love his class. Although, I can see how so people are so divided. He does go fast but his methods make much more sense than the book's. You have to be a student who likes to figure things out on your own, and once you can do that the class will be so easy for you.
Don't be afraid to ask questions or for help. I went from a D to a B in his class. Got an A on the final. He is very helpful!! Yes, he's a little bit fast in class and his jokes aren't always funny but he does teach and he teaches well.
Wow... I can't believe there are so many negative comments. I took Prof. Brown and he is the best math professor I have ever had. He is always willing to help, goes the extra mile to do so. He is always clear and makes sure his students get it. I plan on taking all my next math classes with him. :)
Mr. Brown is the absolute best math teacher i have ever had. he has helped me understand math. i've gotten a's in his classes and I was NEVER good in math. Got to his office hours. He is the nicest guy and he really cares about his students. anybody that doesn't like him probably just pissed him off. he doesn't take any****.
dont take him!!
I definitely recommend him if you want an easy A. His grading system is to make sure you get an A. He gives take home quizes every week, which is similar to sample probs in textbook, then he gives practice test which is similar to the quizes and his exams are similar to the practice tests!! He's nice and very helpful, too..
hes very anal about things n talks too much about himself n wastes time n whatever but he teaches well n i like how he grades... except i hate the take-home quizzes every week. its like homework. he drops like 3/13 quizzes n 1/3 exams n if u do well u dont have to do the final. i cant get an A with him though.
he is a decent instructer but he just talks to much about irrelavent topic and is an annoying person.
He is fun to watch because he loves his subject
Talks about a lot of irrelevent things and is picky about small details. Practice tests and quizzes will prepare you for the tests. You will learn your material however.
My classmates and I agree that he is annoying, full of himself, waistes most of each class talking about himself, and hes not funny, hes picky about stupid little things, and hes always right no matter what.
too hubris for his own good. If he could get over how great he is, maybe he could teach. If you are not really great at math and struggle like me, don't take him! He doesn't explain anything, just talks about nonsense and himself. He'll say to his office hours, yeah doesn't help! I'm on the dean's list and he is the worst teacher I have had.
Mr. Brown is very kind and fun. He really did go on about nonsense during classtime but he covered a lot of difficult material and made it somewhat understandable. He is eager to help if you contact him during his office hours but don't get him started about his personal life... I received a B and I'm prety awful at math
Sweet, organized, helpful, and fun. Gotta love when he smears chalk dust on the back of his shorts! I got an A in his class, but then again I'm cute and really good at math. If you are neither of these, good luck.
Mr. Brown is a really good teacher.I got an A in math 95 and 96 thanks to him. He explains everything really well, he's funny and you only have to do your homework to help you practice for test. The quizes are very helpful too, I would take him again if he had math 116.
Best math teacher i have ever had. He is willing to go over the material multiple times for people. shows every step on the board while hes doing the problem. very knowledgeable in the field he teaches. definatly take math from him if you can
Mr. Brown looks exactly like Scott Bakula from "Quantum Leap" The whole time I was waiting for Al to walk in mumbling with Ziggy. Other than that... great teacher, if you pay attention and show up for class, you will be successful, if you are a slacker don't take him. He puts a lot into it and expects you to do the same. No free lunch here.
Good class. Really gets off topic a lot. Office hours are useless as all he does is talks about himself. I won't likely take him again...just too annoying to deal with.
He is an amazing teacher, his teaching techniques are wonderful, for my class at least, he gave us take home quizzes and practice tests, he doesn't assign homework, he just recommends some problems to do, ( you should do them ), and he is so funny, and very fun personality, he is a wonderful teacher, he really is
He teaches well but goes of on tangents for half an hour. He gives practice exams and take-home quizzes but the real exams are really hard. Grading system is fair. Yeah, he's kinda into himself.
Prof. Brown is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is enthusiastic and knows his stuff. He has a high energy level that helps students stay involved in a potentially boring class. The quizzes help you learn the material and prepare you for the exams. The exams are graded tough. After finishing his class you will know calculus inside out.
I really liked Prof. Brown's lectures. Yes, he goes off on tangents but he makes class time more interesting than any other math teacher I've had. There are weekly take home quizzes and 3 in-class exams. You get to drop 520 points. I would take Brown for Calc 2.
Difficult class, very... hes a very nice guy and is willing to help you out but he grades very very hard. small answers can make the difference of an A test or an F
Professor Brown is an incredibly bright and outgoing person. He makes mathematics so easy. I'm someone who's had an awful track record with math. He seems to make every little detail so clear. He's a really nice guy. His grading system is very fair, he's not a tough grader. I highly recommend him.
He uses a lot of short cuts that are actually helpful. You need to go to class to pass it though. He gives a lot of quizes and is a very fair grader. He tells a lot of cheesy jokes and has a super fake laugh but his class is really good.
he is good teach and all but he is real a tough grader! he looks at really small things. He is a great teacher. He teaches good. REALLY HARD TESTS AND HE IS A HARD GRADER.
His grading system is awesome.. very flexible, he looks at every single details in graing but thats part of the learning process, very generous in giving xtra credit (25 pts each test) His willing to help students in any way, and no one can make math interesting like he do. lookin forward to be in his calc 2 class. btw the class is hard not him.
Great Professor. He's very passionate about the subject. Always willing to help. His quizes are pretty tough, but the exams are much easier.
no curve, very picky, partial credit sucks, tests are easier than quizes which. This guy is a freak and wastes alot of class time talking nonsense like we cant really date dino bones what a jerk stay away if you can
Hard Quizes. Tests are more reasonable. No curve. Ya he gives some extra credit worth 25 points but all questions are worth 15 to 50 points, its idiotic. Way to intense for Bio or Biz majors. I got a B and lost my 4.0 because of this losers quiz Q's.
Excellent teacher, I would highly recommend if you suck at math!!
Excellent teacher
BEWARE!!! IF MATH IS NOT YOUR SUBJECT!! DO NOT!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! YOU WILL ABSOLUTELY FAIL TRYING,DOES NOT EXPLAIN THINGS, WAY TOO FAST, NOT A GOOD TEACHER!!!
he's a decent guy but in the classroom he is sooooooo full of himself. you get annoyed really easily from his bragging and his ridiculous complaints about how the writers of the book are incompetent and dumb...which can't logically be true btw considering he never written a book himself. and he takes points off for the smallest things. not good
Best math teacher by far! i loved having his class. i took it in 8 weeks, so it was 2 1/2 hours mon-thurs. He does daily quizes that are a few questions, but it keeps the material fresh in your head. He was so helpful and very funny. I would say you MUST take him! you will learn so much in an easy way. I wish i could take him over and over
Tests are rough, but he gives out practice exams and lets you use a note card on the test. Grading scale is pretty fair, tough class but Brown makes it pretty straight forward. I would take him again
good straight forward lessons.daily easy quizzes that help keep infromation intact.laughs for no reason alot but not too annoying.and basically screw your way of learning previous stuff and do his way and youll get a decent grade.
He is for lack of a better term, a math wiz. He knows his stuff backwards and forwards. He is actually somewhat arrogant, but that's to be expected. He assigns homework everyday, but he doesn't make you turn it in. His tests are on the material but unless you do the problem EXACTLY as he does it, you will get marked down. Study and you'll do fine.
He is a amazing teacher. Sadly i failed due to getting sick as hell and missing a great amount of the class, however he really knows his stuff. He actually made math interesting for me for sure and if i could, i would retake him in a heartbeat.
I had him for math 150 and 151. He is the best professor at Mesa college period. He may not be the easy A, but he truely cares and will always be there to help. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
The BEST math teacher hands down!Straight forward and simple approach to math. Explains everything in a way that makes you get it! He is very energetic and pretty funny too. All you have to do is show up take decent notes and pay attention and you cant help but to learn!! I wish he taught every math class and I would take him again and again!!
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!!. Mr. brown the number one!! If he taught every math subject, i would take him again and again.
I HIGHLY recommend Professor Brown!!! I had him for math 95 and currently have him for 96. He is amazing! I hated Math prior to taking his course. He explains things so well and if you ever get lost he has office hours every day!If you suck at Math you must take him. He will make sure that you get it=)
I love him best professor ever, If you do the HW and ask questions you are guaranteed an A. He is also a super chill guy
Run away from this Big, He doesn't know how to teach. Talks about him self all the time.
He is the stupidest teacher i have ever seen.He is a hater and does not even know how to teach. dont even think of taking him. too much work. hard grading and boring....
Best math teacher at mesa! He is so clear and so helpful. I have never in my 20 years of being a student seen a professor that helpful and so kind. I really enjoyed this class. Grade wise he is pretty easy as long as you do the HW you have no problem getting an A. So happy he is teaching linear !!!
I had Mr. Brown for 95 and 96, He is an amazing teacher and i would highly recommend him. I like his teaching style alot he teaches you the shortest way possible to get the right answer. Homework isn't mandatory but if you are not strong in math then do the HW i dont and i pass the tests. I wish he taught ever math class!
Overall a good teacher with a friendly personality, but tough. The class notes are a bit disorganized, and he is picky with his grading. You loose major points for minor mistakes. It is tough to get an A on an exam, If your math ability is not rock solid, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
OMG this guy is sooo full of himself!!! Out of an hour and a half lecture he spend 45min talking about how great he is, how he had to correct prof's at SDSU, and how he never EVER gets sick. I learned a lot though, from the TEXTBOOK! He barly touches the board, and do not ask him questions as he will just go off on a tangent. Grading was fair/tough
First off: he's full of himself. According to him, the textbook is useless. Alright, sure. Take-home quizzes every week. Quickly got annoying. Sure, it helps. But be ready to work a lot. I didn't find his lectures helpful when doing the textbook homework. Miss one class and it'll be hard to catch up. Progresses really fast. Miss 2-3, you're doomed.
This guy is a meat head. He spends more time talking about himself that he does explaining difficult concepts. Do yourself a favor and don't take this loser.
I would avoid Brown if I had to do it all over again. At first he seems like a really good professor because he seems to really know Math. So yeah, I did learn a lot from him. BUT, like so many others have said. He goes off on tangents, is full of himself, and his grading is uneven from person to person, shows favoritism if you do office hours.
Pluses: This professor really cares & wants you to succeed. He's helpful in office hours, and by email. He means well. Minuses: He takes off WHOPPING amounts for small errors. I got my 1st B, not b/c the material was hard, but b/c I can be sloppy. His lectures are ADD, hard to follow the notes looking back later. He complains about the book ALOT!
Please listen to these other people. This teacher is terrible. He takes off half credit for a misplaced equal sign or almost anything. Correct answers? F-. He talks crap about everyone else and says hes god. He will talk down all your old teachers and make you feel retarded. He hates the book so you only have a limited amount of notes to learn. D-
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ESPECIALLY IF ITS STATISTICS, HE'S AN AWFUL TEACHER BRAGS ABOUT HIS KIDS, SERIOUSLY HE BROUGHT US A LIST OF COOKIES THAT HIS DAUGTHER WAS SELLING FOR GIRL SCOUTS, WHICH TAKES UP A LOT OF CLASS TIME, OF COURSE UNDERESTIMATES THE REST OF HIS MATH STAFF, HORRIBLE
He's a bit hard, sometimes harsh in his grading, and like the other reviewers here say -he does go off on some tangents. However, he still usually manages to cover all the necessary material each day. He loves math, and wants his students to understand it and perhaps learn to love it too. So - you need to understand the material, not just learn it.
if you are a math genius take it if not avoided. I agree with comments that this teacher make you feel retarded and it is extremely strict on grading . very difficult for people that hate math like me there are daily quizzes
Prof Brown is a good teacher, but difficult. He is an extremely critical grader, and his lectures are very fast paced. He provides a lot of supplementary material however, take home quizzes, practice tests, all with solutions, and none collected or graded. The book is also quite helpful. His class is not hard, but NOT easy, just put in the time.
Very strict grader. Make sure you put things in the form HE wants, not how it's done in the text. I got marked off a whole problem this way. Also, no graphing calculators allowed.
Didn't know a math class could be politicalized, I was proven wrong. At least 1/3rd of lecture was spent on conservative politics. HW is done out of the book and not graded. Grade is based on tests. Don't take this teacher unless you are proficient in math. He also seems to have contempt for college students.
Speaks very fast and doesn't follow the book. Which makes it hard to prepare before class or review what was done in class. Moves too fast to take notes. He is very available before and after class for help, but still moves fast during those times. Overall he is a sharp guy, but I think he moves a little too fast.
He talks fast and doesn't really follow the book. He gives you all the material you will need to know for his quizzes and exams. The lecture might be tough but he's very helpful during office hours. I took his short term class and made it out with a C, would've gotten a better grade if full term.
Excellent professor if you are willing to put in the work. GOING TO OFFICE HOURS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF HIS COURSES. You really need to get a good group and roll to office hours every chance you get. You get so much individual help from him and it is amazing. One of the best professors I have ever had in my life and I recently graduated@UCSD
Very thorough instructor. I will take his higher level courses.
Mr Brown is a very tough marker. He marks one off with the slightest mistakes, especially in his quizzes.. which is very hard to score good grades in, since the textbook questions doesn't even really relate to the quizzes. It wasn't a pleasant class, stay away.
Where do i begin! this proffesor gives optional homework with no credit. doesnt help at all. he speaks about his son and his upper level calculus classes all the time which doesn't help you at all with the course. he is too strict on grading. i always hated math but now i despise it. I WOULD STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFFESOR!!!passed math 46 with B+
This guy should write his own book because he WILL complain about 80% of the time how the book is so useless. Really hard to take notes and look back on them later. Talks super fast. Favors students who go to office hours and grades unfairly. Extremely hard grader. Takes off a billion points for misplacing a sign. Good luck.
He's always excited about Math which makes you want to learn Math. However, he fails to realize he needs to be more clear for us students because he talks and writes fast and it makes it really hard to absorb material. Also quizes are based on his notes, but he often fails to show us how to do problems we need for the quiz :(
Really knows his Calculus and is enthusiastic when he teaches which keeps it lively. His practice exams are very helpful because they are similar to the actual exams. Homework is not mandatory, but will help with the daily quizzes. Not an easy class but he does well at giving the student the best opportunity to pass. Best calculus class I've taken.
Effective because he allots the right amount of time for each chapter. You will cover everything expected in these courses, while other professors will desperately struggle to stay on schedule. Accelerates at his own pace so keeping up is difficult. Talking to individually feels like you're on different planes of existence though. Do take for LinAl
i would recommend this professor to anyone who is going onto higher math, as he helps you build a strong foundation of understanding. Go to his office hours, put in the work and you will appreciate your newly gained knowledge afterwards :)
Very good teacher. Pros- Clear, enthusiastic, tests are very straight forward, explains things well. Cons- talks a bit fast, weekly quizzes due. Overall highly recommended! Taking him again for Calc3.
This is the very first instructor I have had who will not take the time to answer questions, but will speak for twenty minutes about his upper level CALC classes and other BS. It was extremely frustrating. I was excited about this class until about two weeks in, when it became apparent that we were all on our own. Do not take this instructor.
Highly recommended. Gives practice quizzes and generally prepares you for exams extremely well. No surprises on the exams. Talks fast so write fast!
He explains the subject very well. He definitely knows his stuff which makes understanding it that much easier. He always prepares you for tests with a practice one. And he never tries to trick you on a test :) Just show up to lecture !
does not explain right quizzes every class meeting. explains to fast and if you show work wrong but answer is right he marks it wrong. doesn't teach well i do not recomend
he does not explain good. doesn't even ask if everyone has catched up on the notes just keeps going and end up getting lost. and grades horribly.
Great teacher, must attend lectures, and follow closely. He is really helpful and has office hours in have you have questions. Take him
Horrible The worst grader ever! Makes up math as he goes along. Glass started at maximum capacity and ended with like 12 students. He never uses the text book, rushes through problems, few examples. Talks about how great he is for half the class. Tried going to his office hours and it was just as bad. The only good thing is he doesn't give homework
Prof. Brown goes on tangents sometimes, but is the best lecturer I've yet had. BIG on concepts. He hates ambiguity, and that may be why it seems like he grades hard. I struggled, but by the end, I felt Brown prepared me well to move ahead. I not only would take him again, but I'm planning to in spring. He always answers emails really fast too!
Mr. Brown was the worst Math teacher I have ever taken. He spends more class time talking about how amazing he is at Math than actually teaching. A plus is that he doesn't assign HW, but he does give quizzes every class. All-in-all I wouldn't take him unless you are already good at Math.
If this is your first time taking Calc, HIT THE GROUND RUNNING. My mistake was that I thought I could get away without doing homework every day since it's not mandatory, but that's why I really struggled with daily quizzes. I wouldn't say he's a bad professor, but I'd agree with what most ppl said:he doesn't use the book and goes on tangents.
Mr. Brown is super smart. He knows more about math than anyone I've ever met. He moves fast in his lectures, so you have to stay on top of taking notes, but he does an exceptional job explaining every concept he teaches. I will definitely be taking more of his classes in the future.
Professor Brown is great! He gives you everything you need to succeed, but it's up to you to put it to good use. He's always willing to answer questions and clear up misunderstandings. Smart guy and a great teacher : Daily quizzes, semi-frequent exams, optional final. All sounds good to me!
Took Professor Brown for calc I, II, III, linear algebra, and diffi que! He really is a good teacher. You'll have to study and come to class each day prepared for a quiz to pass, but if you put in the effort you'll do fine on the exams. He's a fair grader, good at explaining the material, and likes his job!
Pros: Extra Credit, Partial Credit, Notecard on Exams, Dropped Lowest Exam, relatively easy Homework and Tests, really knows his stuff. Cons: Very toughpicky grader, very fast talker, focuses a bit too much on proofs and derivations. Best for people majoring specifically in math (vs physics or engineering), but overall, I think I'd take him again.
This guy's a hoot. I took my first Calculus class with him a while back and- while it WAS a lot of work- I think he did a great job of getting me prepared for further studies in mathematics. He's very friendly and open for discussion outside (or inside) of class, so... do that! Really smart guy- knows his stuff. I would definitely take him again :
I've taken him before and would take him again. He explains abstract concepts very well and yes, everyone knows he rambles on about things. Besides that he can tell if you understand concepts, so don't throw stuff at a wall to see what sticks. No required homework, but daily quizzes and challenging tests. Get ready to learn.
Calc two is a tough subject and he makes it harder. He is the most narcissistic professor I have had in 3 years of college. Gives very few examples and talks about himself a lot. He plays favorites and helps certain students during exams and quizzes. Going to office hours is required. Find someone who previously took his class to get exams.
Hes a good teacher but doesn't do many examples. He spends a lot of time on side rants and talking about himself. Those missed examples lead to a difficult time figuring out the homework. If you have nothing else to do than study for his class then take him.
Professor Brown is awesome because he teaches why the math is valid, how to understand the concepts---not just how to get a good grade and forget it the next day. Answers questions, funny, actually gets to know his students, great lectures, and clear grading criteria. I recommend him for math majors for sure.
Professor Brown is by far one of the best math professors I have had throughout my college career. He is helpful, funny, and the notes that you take from his lectures are very beneficial for tests and daily open-note quizzes. If you do well enough on your quizzes and tests the final is optional. If you put in the work, you will definitely get the A
Prof Brown is the best Maths teacher I've ever had. He really understands the material, and his passion for it really shines through during his lectures. He's not easy but well worth the effort. Great teacher 100% recommended. Occasional joke and anecdote during lectures, but overall very well structured class. He knows exactly what he's doing.
Brown is amazing at math. He is the best math teacher on earth hands down! He is so good at math he spends a large amount of lecture proving to you how good he is at math just so you can understand how smart he is! He also provides many breaks during lectures where he talks about his philosophy on life. One could only dream of being as almighty!
Assigns daily quizzes that are essential to passing. Rely on office hours to figure out things that were not explained in lecture. Always go to office hours and treat them like class time or else you will not pass. He does rant and get off subject quite easily but some of the rants are necessary for him to prove his value as a math teacher.
Could spend more time teaching and giving examples than gloating about himself. Don't take him unless you can pick up math and are a fast learner.
Really Hard and frustrating if you have never taken any Calculus class before
Brown loves himself.. He teaches you how much he loves himself every single class. If you like hearing a guy talk about himself more than he teaches than take Brown.
This man is out of his mind. He is a hardass. That said, he is a highly effective teacher, and awesome to be around - if you aren't terrified of him. You derive and prove EVERYTHING. You are allowed formula notecards, which is great. Zero homework, study and practice is your responsibility. Daily quizzes. You will work for that A.
Michael brown is so smart he's figured out how to get paid for only teaching you all about himself while he sort of teaches math. Take him if you want to learn about Michael on top of math.
step 1: do it his way or do it his way step 2: ???? step 3: profit
Professor Brown makes it seem like he's teaching an English class. His tests aren't very difficult but he WILL find a way to take points off. He expects everything to be absolutely perfect. If the logic is there but you happen to miss, for example, a bracket on one of your vectors, he will take off half of the points. Take at your own risk.
Professor Brown is the best at Mesa! Teaches math and shows you why it's valid. Homework is optional but it's up to you to learn the topics, I personally never did the homework but studied intensively. He tells you about his personal life and tells you how stupid the author is. Anybody who doesn't take this class I feel sorry for. He's amazing!
Can you handle going to Brown Town? I took him at the advise of my fellow STEM dogs. He is super smart and knows the material, he's been teaching it for 30 years. Form study groups, go to office hours, do homework. He's a nut but I thought he was hilarious.
Amazing teacher. Take home quiz everyday. No mandatory homework. 3 test and 1 Final. Open for office hours or you can email for help and will respond. Notes very close to the test. COPY NOTES EXACTLY. practice using the calculator while hes doing the problem so you wont have trouble. NEED scientific calculator, no need for graphing one. Overall fun
Baddest teacher I ever have. 50% of his lectures are talking about himself or some random stuff. He never talk about the main point. Copying note is not really helpful for your test. You MUST do your homework and study in your own way. His lecture gonna waste your time and make you sleepy. Don't take it.
Calc 2 was kind of tough, but Professor Brown made it great for all his students!
His strongest point is grading system, it is brilliant. You will have to work for the grade, but he makes it so you get the grade you work for. I have never learned as much in a math class as in his MATH252 class. Not easy, but if you want to learn, a great professor.
No hwk collected so only do it to practice. Instead daily open-note quizzes require you to stay on top of the material. I did better when I stopped focusing on the hwk and studied by rewriting my notes and reworking class examples. Grading system is GREAT and forgiving of early mess-ups. This class is hard work but you'll really learn.
grading system is good. I find him hard to follow, moves very fast through the material. Biggest complaint is that even if I do all of the practice tests and quizzes, still not prepared for his test. If you (Prof.) are reading this please consider making the test questions the same *type* of problem as what we've spent hours studying for.
Attend, take good notes, and turn in all the take-home quizzes, it's an easy A. Your grade is either 3 exams+Final, or best 2 exams+best 20 Quizzes+Final. Formula sheet provided for exams. Quiz Q's are based on lecture problems. Good office hrs, very responsive by email, no reason not to get an A on quizzes if you ask for help. I learned a lot!
His lectures are really good and he explains the material really well. His class is however, very fast pace. He is a pretty harsh grader and will take a lot of points for small mistakes. He gives hw but they are not graded. Instead we have weekly take home quiz. You have a week to do them. Usually based on his notes. You learn a lot but it's hard.
It's a little hard to get used to his teaching style but once you get into the groove of it, it's easy to take good notes and trust me notes will save your life. No mandatory HW but quizzes every day about that day's lecture, so basically that's HW. I would definitely take his class again!
If you've never taken calculus before DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He seems to speed though all the material much faster than the other classes making it hard to understand. His grading scale is set up real nice, only thing that counts is 4 test or total quiz grade replaces 1 test out of 4. However, he is a very harsh grader. He expects perfect math.
Professor brown is an amazing teacher! He speeds through material but he is very thorough and explains everything if you have a question. He is always available for any questions during his office hours. No homework is due for the class but do it anyway! Its calculus you cant learn without hours and hours of practice.
Very energetic and passionate about math. He's pretty particular in how students write out solutions, but he makes his criteria very clear. Very knowledgeable in all things math, but his passion frequently takes him off track into long winded tangents. Overall a great professor.
Hardest Professor I have ever taken. I am an A/B student and if you have not taken him before, you will struggle in his class. Probably the harshest grader you will ever encounter. No hope for any partial credit at all. Does not do many examples in class but when he does, they do not pertain to what you will see in exams or quizzes. Don't take.
If you care about your GPA, DO NOT TAKE HIM! His class is just him speeding through material and him talking about himself. I learned more about Michael Brown than calculus
Lectures are good, although he does not do enough practice problems in my opinion. Grade is 3 exams and final. Daily quizzes, but are not part of grade. Does not review for exams in class, but does send out practice problems. Exams are difficult. Grades fairly. Many people dropped. I did not but I should have. You have to study or you will fail!!!!
One of the best math instructors I ever had because he has so many years of experience teaching it that he knows what you need to know and makes it simple! No pop quizzes(its a lie those who used that tag), exams are not hard at all if you study and pay your WHOLE attention in class and take notes, diff ways to grade you, super caring and awesome!
Prof. Brown is just the best!Look, if you dont like math you are going to have a hard time with lectures, why? Because you are there to learn and if you are not caring about the notes that you take or asking questions in or outside class, then you will fail! IF you like math, take him. For me, his lectures were what i needed to be better at math!
I took him one year ago and I still go to his office when I need help with math. I have never seen somebody so passionate to teach. He is definitely my favorite, however, I do not recommend him if you do not want to study HARD. If you really want to learn, he is the best option at mesa.
This class prepares you for top universities, it is a heavy class and it is because all the classes he teaches are higher level math, tips to survive and get A # SEE WHAT YOU GOT WRONG ON THE QUIZZes#TAKE NOTES#PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT HE EMPHASIZES ON THE MOST. # Visualize# PRACTICE!too much? please drop and do not complain, just saying!
I have had Brown for M254 and M255, A's in both. You will learn A LOT of math, as Brown is extremely passionate about the subject and practice tests mimic the real test. Do extra problems in the textbook and review well for the test, along with consistently turning in quizzes and coming to class.
To be honest, Michael Brown is a great professor but he is not for everyone. You either are gonna love him or hate him. Very approachable, test heavy, and be careful... you can be caught in an endless conversation with him with NO WAY OUT! lol but overall he is great and I tend to do well on exams, which is what your grade is based off
The Henry Rollins of math. Class is very well organized and structured. Homework and exams are always returned by the next class and he is always available during office hours. Do the quizzes and do the optional homework. Exams are challenging due to time constraints so practice problems constantly. If you are any sort of STEM major, take him.
Professor Brown is very clear on what are going to be on tests and is always available during office hours. He is a very caring professor and is passionate about math. I really like how he has his own methods and quick tips for doing math problems, which makes calculus easier to understand. You'll most likely succeed in class if you attend to class
Highly recommended for anyone who has to take upper-division math classes. You'll work hard in this class, but the level of understanding you'll have of the material is worth the effort. The quizzes and practice tests are very representative of the exams. Professor Brown is extremely helpful in his office hours. Practice a lot if you want an A!
Talks more about himself than does he does about actual exam materials. Its his way or the highway, this professor want all work done in the same manner as him, and doesnt acept anything else as perfectly correct.
Honestly, I've never had more trouble getting help than from Brown. I messaged him a ton, received zero responses, and his office hours are so busy with other "higher level" students. Talks about himself half of every class and not subject matter. Do it his way, even though he says to "be creative" during tests. Hated this class because of him.
Terrible lecturer, off topic all the time. Never learned a thing from him the whole semester. Very picky on showing work. Will mark you off if you don't do a problem the way he wants you to even if its the correct answer. Don't take him.
1. Too Fast 2. His ways not for a student who is not really good at math. I saw a student who sit next to me, hand in a blank paper to the exam. A good professor is to make students understand the material, not always present a short cut or your way to do. 3. Tough grader. Expect an A ? Unless he likes you.
Terrible professor, terrible class. Don't take. Period.
Brown won't hold your hand but he also won't leave you behind. He knows his stuff and you will too, eventually. Diff EQ is intimidating at first and it'll still be intimidating when you pass, but he has all of the ways to solve the first and second order ODEs down and if you want to learn them, show up! My C was due to preoccupation by PHYS196.
I took prof brown in spring 2020 when we switched to online halfway through. In person, the lectures were long (2hrs) but very thorough and he gave a lot of examples and tricks to make things easier. online he gives a few pages of notes and a 5-7 minute video on the subject, and strangely that was still enough. very fast email responses.
In order to pass this class, make sure yourself is a self learner. Make sure you are not bother to hear Brown's stories. He is a tough grader. Make sure yourself is perfect then you can take his class. He wont make you perfect. But you have to be perfect to attend his class. Take other professor, if you could. Honest suggestion.
Tough grader, very particular, overly critical
currently taking him over the summer semester there is about 25 quizzes. 3 exams (70% of your grade) plus a final(30% of your grade). Btw he will replace your lowest exam score with top 20 of your quiz scores. his first exam had 24 questions and 2 hours to finish it. which I don't agree with. at least 30 more min.
He's ok, just make sure you do everything how he wants otherwise it wont turn out well.
Very knowledgeable about what he is teaching, however, he's not a great teacher. He is extremely critical and a tough grader. I recall getting the correct answer shown by the steps in a textbook and he still marked it wrong. My class switched to online halfway because of the pandemic and his teaching style became worst. I dropped the class shortly.
This guy is so unbelievably picky you have no idea. We recently have had 2 quizzes that required u substitution and I did it the way Ive done it for Calc 1 and 2 and the way Organic Chemist on youtube does it and got the RIGHT ANSWERS. Yet despite this, I GOT HALF CREDIT ON MY QUIZ BECAUSE it wasnt done his way. What in the world...
let me start with this, if your work doesn't match his work 100% you're not getting full points for the question in quiz or exam. You get the same answer as him but since your work doesn't match his you don't getting full points. It's so frustrating by far the worst professor i have ever had. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE IF YOU CAN!
Here is the thing about Prof. Brown. Do it HIS WAY and you will pass. Double check with him if your work is the way he wants it and he will give you feedback on what to correct. That is the key to his class. I stopped going to tutoring and looking for online help because I would get marked down. Kinda sucks but that's how you pass his class
Took 2 classes from Brown, regret not taking more. If you want to really understand math, and are willing to put in the work, this is the guy for you. Do the reading, go to office hours, and grind practice problems. Finals are optional if your grade is high enough; I never had to take one. PSA: He WILL talk your ear off in office hours.
I had to withdraw bc I wasn't doing well and had other demanding classes. His lectures were okay, but math doesn't stick with me. He has zoom lectures, but post them online too. After every class you have a week to complete the quiz. You also have homework, but I never found it helpful. Still do it though. If you suck at math, good luck
I like his class and his syllabus design. He is very organized and finished all the materials early. I even got an A without taking the final. Every week has two quizzes. No much homework. He posted lots of stuff online to preview and review. Not a hard class.
Super nice man but strict grader, asking you to show all the steps. Tests are two hours with 10-25 questions, which are kind of in a hurry. Practice quizzes every week, some extra credits problems on it. Final is optional. Overall it's not a difficult class but definitely work on it.
Unbelievably tough and picky grader. No partial credit ever. You can spend 20 minutes doing the work from one problem on your exam (that has 30 problems and a 2 hour time limit btw) and if you misplace one single digit, or drop a negative, or use the instead of then he will mark the whole damm thing wrong. Do yourself a favor and drop this guy
DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY. He treats his students like dumb babies and is a VERY hard grader. He does not understand how to use current technology. His quizzes are very similar to example problems from his lectures.
Honestly he's so into himself. Of course he's been studying Math for so many years you would be better than your students. Also if you don't do it the way he teaches he'll mark you down almost all your points even if the other method is correct and you get the correct answer. Very little to no partial credit. Grading scale is also scuffed
Taking his class, is learning about Michael Brown. Katherine Neitmark class better than him 10000%. You will learn nothing from him. you taking his class because the schedule is early morning, so you can go home early BUT SUFFER the whole semester by learn nothing. There are more professor out there, who is way better than Michael Brown!!!
Anyone complaining about this professor is honestly just clearly not paying attention to how his class works. His quizzes can replace 1 exam (including final) and you can get extra credit on quizzes. It's so simple to just do it his way and get full credit and over 100% average on quizzes. Exams also have a very fair extra credit on each one
Professor Brown is one of the best teachers I have ever had. You do have to apply yourself, pay attention in lecture, and study for exams, but I found that his grading structure makes it easy to get an A. I took him for Calc 2 and enjoyed him so much I took him for Calc 3 and discrete and I am enrolled in his Differential Equation class this fall.
Professor Brown is one of the best at Mesa! Linear Algebra is a difficult subject but he makes it fun and simple to learn. If you have an A before the final, you can skip it. Tests and quizzes are hard but near identical to problems on the practice test and lecture respectively. Quizzes have lots of EC. Could not recommend Brown enough!
You MUST attend and follow his lectures PRECISELY. Solve problems in EXACTLY the way he shows. Every exam problem comes from the lectures/quizzes, so if you pay attention and study, you have the solutions to every exam question, and thus, an A. There are no surprises, the class is very fair. If you keep up, you will master the material.
He is the best math professor that I have ever had.
Professor Brown is a magnificent professor that has clear expectations and tells you how he wants his answers. Don't deviate from how he wants it done or you will fail for sure. He has a ton of office hours and they can get packed but it is worth it. You can skip the final if you Aced all other exams and quizzes. CON: He will talk your ear off!!
Class is well organized and resourceful. Easy A if you like math. Tells stories about himself, brags and puts down others. Classic narcissist, thinks hes the shit; truly a foul person. Luckily lecture videos are available so can skip thru his bullshit. Cares more about notation and wording than logic and problem solving ability, grades accordingly.
It's all about him. He'd be a great instructor if he just taught. Goes on tangents a lot and brags about himself.
Professor Brown is probably my favorite professor. The course is structured and outlined well. He provides a lot of notes and videos online. He wants us to form good habits, so he is a tough grader but he is also clear in what he wants. You are graded on all 3 exams or best 2 and the final, & hw. He is a little quirky but he cares for his students.
Had Mr. Brown as a substitute for Math 116, and thank god we did. He is an awesome professor and great at explaining during his lectures. He does knock off points during a test/quiz for little errors or mistakes a lot, so making sure that you write clearly is a must. His practice tests were straightforward copies of the tests. Would take him again
I had 3 hours of class twice a week but I feel like the lecture could have been wrapped up in an hour and a half because he tends to get distracted and talk about stories of himself. He offers make up credit and you can drop the 5 lowest quizzes and your lowest exam. There's a lot of homework but I think it's manageable. Explains pretty well too.
Prof. Brown makes lectures entertaining by making it as if he's putting on a show. Optional final exam if you do well on the first 3 exams and homework. He gives you all the tools for success with his great structure around the class. It's really up to the person whether they want to get that easily attainable A or not. Great Professor.
Follow his instructions, study outside of class, and do well on his quizzes, you will succeed! He is a tough grader, but for good reason. It made me a much better math student overall. Those leaving bad reviews probably did not pay attention to his instructions. He's entertaining & passionate. By far one of my favorite teachers at SDCCD.
Most enthusiastic teacher I've had. He's attentive to the students. His mind races so fast, you can ask a question and he'll go off on a wild and unnecessary tangent. You can get all the answers correct and still get a D on an assignment. Tough grader but motivating. Less work shown the better as he will comb thru your work to find mistakes.
I had Prof.Brown for Math 119x (4 hr class for students that need more support).Calculator is needed but he will not tell the whole class to get same one or show how to use it. When he lectures, he drifts off into his thoughts and I cannot correlate lecture with math anymore. When we asked for help, he made us feel that we should already know.
1) Go to class 2) He is very strict, grades by few things, keep a mind that you will lose points randomly, but you'll get used to it and be better 3) quizzes are homework, every lecture will have a quiz, tests are clear and he has practice tests (designed for human), so if you go to class, do quizzes and practice tests, you will nail the test.
Will often skip steps, and make you feel wrong for asking questions. Will mark you off for the tiniest things, doesn't encourage students to work together, and drifts off into his delusions in the middle of an explanation, quizzes are simple but hard. He is a smart professor, but I would never take him again.
A polarizing professor, as you can see from reviews. I found him to be highly intelligent, a deep-well of knowledge. Also appears eccentric, borderline manic at times, with a ruthless adherence to syntax. If you strongly desire to learn mathematics, he's a good professor. If you desire a good grade on the other hand, prepare to work.
Professor Brown is an excellent professor. He loves mathematics, and that makes him a fun lecturer. He does a lot of talking, but if you listen in, the course content is made very clear. His focus is on mathematical procedures, so he cares very much about notation and methodology, and comparatively little about problem solving. Easy course overall.
Won't think of taking again and I recommend not taking him yourself. Long winded tangents not related to lecture, skips TONS of steps and claims "he doesn't need to write them out," and a harsh grader that takes off points for correct with with slightly incorrect (in his eyes) notation like arrows indicating the next equation.
Overall, I am enjoying his Math 151 class. I appreciate the light work load as there is no homework assigned, only a short take-home quiz after each lecture that you have 1 week to compete. Exams are exactly like the quizzes plus he provides a practice test before exams. As long as you do the quizzes & understand the concepts, an A is achievable.
Difficult class. Take him if you're a math person and you will get an A. If math isnt your strength you will not pass. Those are really the only 2 ways. Not a lot of people get B or Cs. You either get it or your lost. He was helpful in office hours so take advantage of those. good luck
grade is only determined by quizzes and exams. there is no assigned homework so make sure you understand everything he is saying in lecture and create a consistent study routine outside of class. final exam is cumulative and it covers a LOT of material
Brilliant man. Keep in mind I withdrew from this class, and I hear that it got easier after the Withdrawal deadline. He isn't a professor you take to get an A. He will deduct points for every little thing and I chose to withdraw because I wanted to maintain my 4.0, which I was jeopardizing with finishing this class.
I've transferred already, but he's by far the best math professor at Mesa. He gives you all the tools to succeed, wants you to succeed, and gives you actual feedback to correct your mistakes before an exam. He's very picky on mistakes, but it's really hard to not end with an A in his class unless you're messing around or extremely incompetent
Most amazing professors I've ever met. He's so educated and enthusiastic about what he teaches it makes the class much easier to digest. He seems like a tough skin, but try to visit him and talk to him as a person and he's the kindest soul you'll ever meet. I love that the quizzes and exams are so close to what he teaches you in class.
Great professor, super kind and loves what he teaches. Make sure to pay attention to lectures because exam questions are very similar to them.
Amazing professor. Highly recommend you come visit him during office hours. He's very friendly and extremely helpful. He really just wants his students to learn.
Respected by his students. Not the class to take if you expect an easy A, you WILL work hard and get a B or C but you will be proud of your grade nonetheless. Good for those majoring in mathematics/applied mathematics as he emphasizes constantly that a strong foundation in mathematics is the foundation for all things.
Don't take this class from him. What everyone else has said is true. Talks about himself, gets upset at random stupid stuff, be prepared to study like this is your only class for 12 hours a day sometimes. Goes really fasts, says that what everyone else has taught you is wrong and this is the only correct was to do it. Be prepared to teach yourself.
No home work given, no assigned reading, not organized with his materials, endless videos about him talking, manipulative in his language, loves to talk about himself. One day we had a review for the test he wasted 45mins talking about himself and last 15min of class was review. Learned more from Khan Academy
Quizzes/exams are the ONLY graded assignments. No homework to help boost overall class score. His quizzes and exams appear simple but he will deduct points for details that he never expressed were problems before. Grading criteria is obscure and according to him every math teacher you had before is wrong and his opinion is the only correct one.
Terrible experience. He expects you to know half of the information before ever stepping foot in his class. He speaks too fast in person to take good notes, so you have to go back and spend hours watching his lecture videos. Be sure to answer test questions EXACTLY the way he writes them, or be ready to have points deducted. Stay away if you can.
He gets two stars for being very knowledgeable on the material he's teaching. Impossible to ask a question because he cuts you off and rambles for 20 minutes about himself or some unrelated topic. Grading criteria isn't clear and will deduct points if your work isn't exactly how he wants it. Condescending, arrogant, unhelpful.
Brown is very good at math and he wont hesitate to tell you about it. He is very fast, not a good source for individual help as he doesn't really answer the question and goes on tangents. Items he does not budge on: notation, wrong results even if correct process, no partial points given. Few assignments. Not strong in math? Look somewhere else.
Prof brown is one of the worst calc teachers i've ever had hands down. Insanely fast during lecture He says not to worry but WILL give you a 0 on a problem for ANY error whatsoever. This dude will NOT stop talking about how smart he is, usually for over 50% of class time is him talking about how "nobody can understand math on his level". avoid.
If you want to actually learn, Brown is a great teacher. He is not an EASY A by any means, but unfortunately reviews here are “easy A = good teacher”. There is a Math254 reviewer that says you should know half the info entering class - lolyes, half the material in the beginning is what you should have learned in Precalculus (if you paid attention).
Mike Brown thinks he knows everything because he has been teaching lower level math for many years. But he is horrible at teaching. Talks about himself more than he does problems we should be practicing. Stem center tutors were more helpful than him. Probably smarter than him too.
he spends most of his time trying to trick you with math rather than teach you. he's a prof that enjoys 'gotcha!' questions on tests instead of drilling the fundamentals into his teaching... he posts half explanations online because he takes up so much time in class talking about himself that he doesn't take questions or review any material.
Brown is probably the smartest math faculty member at Mesa bc of his background in Pure Math, but for community college level this is a problem when it comes to grading. He takes off points for things only a math major would get right or care about on quizzes/exams. I dont recommend him if you just need credit.
like someone else said, prof brown enjoys questions only a math major would be able to sniff out. he WILL give you trick algebra to mislead you on exams instead of focusing on teaching calc techniques. if you take this for your core reqs and you're not genuienely gifted at math you'll be in for a lot of pain just to get a C.
No office hours. No emails. If you follow textbooks/ khan/ ochem tutor/ etc he will claim they're the dumbest people alive and go on his daily narcissistic praise of himself. But then also never be available for questions...??? I had to withdraw but AFAIK over 2/3 of the class was failing when I left. Paces his class off the top graded student only
Dude is entirely checked out. I second that there's no office hours, no emails either. Doesn't care that some students are cheating. Will mark you off for ANYTHING and gets personally offended if you ask him to explain his math, very thin skinned and very reactionary during class. Ego driven. Maybe smart..? But he just memorizes his own content
Professor Brown is someone who can be somewhat tolerable during the normal semester - near unbearable during the summer semester. Unless you are extremely familiar with the algebra and Calc 1, do not attempt Calc 2 during summer. His personality is extremely jarring and he's very haughty. You will have to fight for a C in this class.
i haven't finished this class yet but its been very good so far. i would recommend coming to class everyday if you want to fully understand everything. which seems like a drag but honestly he makes it so easy to pay attention with the way he lectures. he's also not a rude/mean prof so thats a plus. would take him again if i could! easy class :)
Everything the others said is true. Extremely strict grader, marks you wrong for correct answers if you don't do problems his way. On exams, he gives hard questions instead of actually testing your knowledge of the fundamentals. No office hours, and he skips steps when doing problems on the board, making the lectures confusing. Avoid if you can.
Some students live by his teaching. I am not one of them. All of the reviews are true he is really that pedantic on exams. Notoriously the most difficult professor. He goes on random rants. He is truly off the rails sometimes and lectures at insane speeds but I can't lie and say he knows his stuff. But I personally never liked his teaching, unreal.
He has an extremely specific teaching style that I personally love, If I had the choice I'd never take another math professor ever again. I got a low grade because I slacked off but if you put the work in this man will make you love calculus. Great jokes during lecture and teaches at a fast pace that forces you to focus.
Pros: knowledgeable, has course content down, not too much work, classwork is similar to quizzes & exams, & he's funny imo. Cons: Not forgiving, relatively tough grader, stuck in his ways, messy board-work, hard to follow at times, & all of this is made worse if you take him in the summer. Personally I liked him but understand those that didn't.
