he is still teaching in high school.....
DO NOT expect to understand what hes saying. He changes everything on a whim.
Had him for a 14-day summer course...he made it very interesting, and relatively easy
He is really hard when it comes to grading tests, don't let that easy going demeanor fool you. His tests are all essays and the ones worth the most points tend to be the on some obscure thing he lectured on for 30 seconds. Also keeps class late constantly
I took his 12-day summer class (four hours a day, four days a week for three weeks). He always let us out early and made the class really interesting. It's a lot of stuff to cover, I suggest a tape recorder. Don't bother buying the book. You won't need it
Excellent Prof. I have taken all of his classes, but this is the best.
An excellant professor that I learned a great deal about. He makes class interesting, and he is fair. The lectures are sometimes long, but very benificial.
Absolutely amazing story teller. 3 hour classes that ran to the very end and not one boring moment. Love his dry wit, and history comes alive with him. Take home test was intense--and I use the same format.
I hate this class!!! It probably wouldn't be so bad, if the exams actually made sense! I hate not knowing what to study, and I agree he does keep the class late. He is also always late!
Not bad his major downfall is his tests, You don't even get a clue as to what to study. He likes to throw a name that might have been mentioned once in the chapter on his tests and expects you to tell him about it.
Don't skip class, that's why I only earned an A
Very hard, but knows his stuff
don't get me wrong mr.Broyles is a terrific teacher, always gets me interested in his class.history comes alive in his class.his tests are what matters they are ,extremely hard.don't bother buying the book it will be a waste of $.tests very hard dont reco
A unique experience. The exams are not easy but test what you know and your ability to deliver in an hour. Interesting attitude toward material, liked his rough edge. Challenge yourself and learn something, take this class.
Horribly hard tests, wouldn't recommend him at all.
Crazy hard tests, I am a 4.0 student and I had to struggle non-stop to get an A in this class. It seemed like no matter how clear I was, I always forgot one stupid fact and got like 5% marked off. If you can handle the tests, he is an awesome teacher with a lot of knowledge.
If you like entertaining lectures full of interesting side notes, then youll like this class. No need to buy the book, just take good notes. For his exams, he lets you use a note card. Dont skip class and take good notes and you should be fine.
I had Dr. Broyles for an online class. He expected work to be completed on time, which I did not have a problem with. I did have a problem that he did not accept late work, yet he was late posting assignments himself. His lecture notes were excellent. You can tell he loves history, even online.
The lectures are interesting. The tests are impossible. If you are concerned about your GPA,I would not recommend him. I could never please him with my essay answers on all three tests.
I have hime for Michigan history and he is a hard professor but knows his stuff. Pay attention to his lectures and forgot the readings. His tests can be difficult but you are allowed to answer the questions you want. All in all Broyles is hard, but one of the best professors I have had in college!!!
Best professor I ever had in college. His tests are relatively easy (at least they were for me). If you can't attend class, you may not like him. But if you just have a tiny amount of interest in history, you will love his class. I would recommend it to everyone.
I learned so much from this teacher. He can keep you interested in what he is saying. (Bring a tape recorder to class though, there is a lot of stuff to know)
Very good teacher, keeps you intrested in the class. Easy to follow to take notes.
Really interesting and good storyteller, but presents his opinions as facts. Talks A LOT. The tests are indepth, but if you pay attention and read over-your notes every couple days, it's not hard.
Very good taecher.Funny talks alot. Indepth tests but extra credit is offered. Overall a good teacher i did not mind going to class.
He is a very good teacher because he is very passionate about history and his job. Plus he's a fun guy, and he keeps the students' attention by making them laugh and projecting his voice ALOT. His tests can be hard but only if you don't study over your notes and don't read the chapters. Fast paced lectures, but you can slow it down with discussions
Highly recommended if you want to learn about history, his test are different but very entertaining. Broyles really knows his history and his lectures are informative. Take notes go to class and you’ll have no problems. Best history teacher at center campus.
My grandpa died and he wouldn't accept my paper being turned in by a friend of mine while I was upnorth for the funeral.
LOVED HIS CLASS!!! Made history come alive and lots of fun. Would dress up in original garb for ancient warriors. Very fun and very interesting.
Hey was a cool guy, always makin jokes and trying to get you attention, but he takes attendence and hell keep you as long as he has, you never leave early...... but hes cool hes exams arent bad at all..... you'll see
loved his class, he made it so interesting and i actually learned some stuff. i want to take him for all my history classes.
If you are willing to do a little studying, and REALLY learn the material, hes a great choice, and from what I have heard, one of the better ones! He loves what he does, I got a well deserved A.
i loved having him as a teacher and i try to take his classes every semester. he makes history really really interesting.
I loved his class, he really made history seem interesting. No one is ever bored in his class. His exams are not bad either. I would recommend him to anyone!
i found his teaching methods to be different. you have to take lots of notes. i did well in the class. attendence is key.
Expects quality work from his students. Iworked hard and got an A. Do not expect to breeze through this class.
He's a cool teacher, very funny BUT gives u a lot of workkkkkk to do in this class!! Almost every week you have a turn in a paper. You have to write two (6 pages) Paper and six (2 pages) Paper..test are pretty difficult too with a lot of essay questions.
He was absolutely horrible. He would make rude comments about my answers on my exams and when I would ask for him to explain them, he wouldnt bother. I think there is a nice way to teach and he was not professional. I would never take him again. He did not care to be polite or understanding
Horrible teacher as far as an online class goes. In addition to the 70 pages of reading per week he gives you like 3 additional articles to read sometimes 12 to 13 pages long. All tests are Essay questions. Sets up assignments to trick you. No review sheet or anything. Makes rude comments about our homework asignments. Really hard to keep up
He's very knowledgeable on topics that interest him, which are various and relevant. However, he'll give inaccurate information when he attempts to work other non-history points into the lesson Even when corrected politely and privately he will NEVER admit to being wrong to the class. Still, the class was interesting and he held my attention.
Horrible, simply terrible. When taking this awful class, i realized it was not the subject matter (which might i add is quiet interesting) but compassion and teaching ability MrBroyles LACKS. I understand his reasoning; he cannot be fired so why try? Never captivated me and nor tried . Believe me u will regret this.Im hoping 4 better educatrs
I hated History until I took his class. He was an excellent teacher and he's really into his work. I suggest taking his lecture class, it's easier.
Good Professor. Understood HIS material, unfortunately the majority of students didn't. I don't recommend this professor.
History of Michigan is an easy class and he is an easy going nice guy. His lectures can get boring, but he gives a lot of test questions away so take notes. If you study the test reviews he gives you the tests will be easy. There are two papers, but he's not overly critical on grading them. If you have a pulse you should be able to pass this class.
a very good teacher, alot of note taking but well worth the amount of info you retain and the amount of money you save from not buying a book. keeps the class interesting by dressing up in costumes. all and all a great guy, hope you read this broyles YOU DA MAN.
broyles is the greatest teacher i've had at macomb. he knows his stuff, keeps it interesting. easy to approach, encourages conversation and debate among students. tests can be challenging, but this is college, what else can you expect? i wish all macomb teachers were as involved as broyles. i plan to take his classes til i'm done here
Had Both Western civ 1500 and 1600! Broyals is the man! You can hate History, but just find yourself liking it cause of him! Anyone who says otherwise has something wrong in their head or is lieing to you to screw you over cause they think it is funny to see you screw up.
Awsome teacher! Highly reccomened him! You learn things new and in a better understand and way then most highschool teachers ever will. I like history very much now cause of him.
Dr Brolyes is THE best history teacher I have ever had. Yes, his tests are very diffuclt and yes he definatly grades hard when it comes to grammer on the essays he has you write, but welcome to college. :) He is definatly the teach to take if your interest in history is minimum.
Ok the guy is a good professor, but his exams are CRAZY! He knows his stuff, all you do is take notes during class, theres 4 exams, each exam covers 1/2 a notebook of notes! The exams are crazy harrd!!
Excellent Teacher. I think the reviews from everyone else pretty much sums him up. Warning if you are in HIST1600 - Don't buy a book. He will say you need it, but he doesn't even refer to it, which is a good thing. His lectures are interesting and he doesn't bore you with facts all day.
If you attend class on a regular basis, you will do fine. The book is not super necessary. He tests almost completely off of lectures. You have two tests, two book reports, and one research paper. He's easy to understand and makes the material interesting. RECOMMENDED!
Makes History interesting, very easy going guy as long as you show up to class. The tests are concept based so they can be trying at times, but as long as you study you should be ok.
Very inconsistant. Was grading assignments one way then switched without telling the class. It was like a different person showed up....
Broyles is the Greatest History Teacher of all TIME. if you love history, he makes it even better because you get some of the jokes he makes about it. He takes a subject many have told me is boring and makes it hillarious and fun, the only bad part is his tests are a little harder then others. and He doesn't go Indepth too much with the material
Interesting teacher and class. Intelligent and knowledgeable. Teaches from the pulpit though, allows political agenda to affect material. If you give him a reason to, he will dislike you and it will affect your grade. This is coming from a Dean's List student who attended every class, completed every assignment, fared well on tests and got a C
Really hard class you spend the whole class period taking notes. You never get homework but exams are extremely difficult. If you don't like spending alot of time and I mean A LOT of time studying then don't take this class!
-poor grammar and spelling in instructions. -did not give critique of tests or homework, therefore no opportunity to improve on previous work. -slow responding to emails. -openly hostile to questions from students.
If you love history then you will love this class. He can go on for hours and I have great admiration for his knowledge. Gace great notes and went into detail on every aspect of what he tought. I recieved an A and didn't find it too hard since my passion is history.
Honestly, BEST TEACHER EVER! People having problems in the class either didn't show up or weren't paying attention. Lectures are extremely interesting and informative; he's hilarious and always has great stories to tell. Gives a ton of time on the paper and assignments aren't hard. If you go to class and pay attention, tests aren't hard either.
Agree with the teacher and you will do well in this class.
he is the best professor i have ever had in my life. He actually keeps the class interested and trust me you will want to learn in this class it is extremely entertaining
Most amazing teacher ever. He's funny and can keep a class interested for the entire 2 hours. Lots of notes, but he makes it fun. And he is openly (amusingly) "hostile" to stupid questions or people who need words spelled out every 10 seconds or need him to repeat himself 8 times. Definitely recommend!
Best college class I've ever taken. It can be challanging to get an A, but it's such a fun class you won't care. Be warned: costumes may appear.
Highly opinionated. If you didn't agree with what he said, you did "bad" in the class. Love history but hate him.
He's a great teacher. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, there isn't to much reading, and he makes the class fun. Anyone that doesn't like him as a teacher most likely did very poorly in the class and needs to rethink there college careers. Because this is not a hard class as long as you pay attention and take good notes.
I hate history but this dude keeps it interesting. You can see his passion for the subject. If I had the time and money id take another class of his. He takes the information and gives it in a way that you can relate to. Hes also very understanding and helpful. Keeps it real, thanks broyles!
Invest in a voice recorder. He talks too fast to keep good notes and nothing comes from the text books.(don't buy them). He holds your attention from the very first minute. Tests can be very hard, but if you pay attention and study you will pass. He is biased and will chastise you if you disagree. I expected there to be more actual histoy of Michig
I'm his online class right now. There are big assignments every 2-3 days, sometimes more. His tests aren't very fair. There are 4, 1 essay and 1 multiple choice for each the midterm and final. The m/c is computer generated and will ask questions not in the book, the chapters don't exist! I brought that to his attention, and he called me a liar!
BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. He puts all of my other history teachers to shame. You will not need the book. Take notes on every word he says. His tests are very easy if you pay good attention and there's hardly no work. He is a great teacher.
He is awesome. I don't really know what to say.
I dropped his class because he gives me low grades everytime.Once again dont take this guy if you are not american.I am not joking.I was in his online 8 week class and had a 60% till few days ago but i need a 70% or above since i attend a university.I blame myself for taking this guy.
I took this class online. Be ready to read up to 60 pages in one week. He returns grades fast so you don't have to wait for ever to see what you got. The tests were difficult but the daily homework was pretty easy.
As long as you do the reading and have some skills in writting, this is an easy and fun class. If you can't write, and you don't do the reading, you'll fail. He expects coherent and well thought out answers. You can't bs your way through it, because he really knows his stuff.
The class was fun, he's easy to get a long with. But you really do need to know what you're doing. You can't just do the normal community college bs papers, he actually expects you to know what you're writing about. The tests are some what hard, but if you do the reading you'll be fine. Not a blow off class but it can be easy if you put the work in
Excellent professor. He lectures with his own notes and is extremely detailed and entertaining. Quizzes have been from the book and Exams from his notes. Quizzes are a little difficult what with the material needed to be covered in your book. Extremely informative, never boring. He's very up-to-date on... well everything. Highly recommended!!
If you like to sit there, listen and take notes for 3 hours, THIS CLASS IS FOR you. if you like to fail quizzes because they are not relative whatsoever, THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU. stupidest class, extrememly hard. he's somewhat funny but i didnt like him.
He has MANY facts completely mixed up or wrong. After the first few strange things he said, I started checking different sources. Check out Theogony by Hesiod or read up on the plague for just a few examples. I would never repeat anything he taught in class without checking somewhere else first. I got an A, so I don't think I'm being biased.
Unbelievable class, excellent professor and very very easy. Went without a textbook for the whole semester and succeeded with a B. Very intelligent man, and is always throwing fun based facts out of the clear blue. Wish I could have this teacher for all of my classes
Great teacher. To ace his quizzes read the chapter thoroughly. Then go to the text book web site and take the practice quiz. If you Like history you'll like this Proffessor
I took this class online. You have to read the text book. Assignments were straight-forward. He easy to get in contact with. He even made history all little less boring than usual. I would definitely recommend him for this class.
Mr. Broyles was a great teacher and it's apparent that he really knows his stuff. Attendance is mandatory in this class and if you miss a day, God help your soul because you missed out on a ton of notes. Quizzes are very hard, but he offers tons of extra credit for basically doing community service. Willing to work for your grade? Pick Broyles.
Don't bother getting the book, I never opened it once. His tests are all based off his lectures. Not easy so make sure you're paying attention. Opp for extra credit. His lectures get off subject sometimes, but overall a good teacher. He likes to put his opinions into the history, not sure what's true history and what he wants you to believe.
Great teacher, very funny guy. He knows his history but you have to attend and pay attention in his class or the tests will be hard.
Awesome teacher, if you love history you will love this guy.
I took his online class. It was extremely fast paced with a TON of writing assignments. His required reading really did not correlate with the assignments. Assignments were reading outside articles and responding to them, with multiple discussion posts for each! They were tough to read. Class average was a 'C'. Fair warning.
I took this Professor's on-line course. The course was a lot of work but it was very interesting. There were weekly writing assignments that were relatively easy to complete. The difficult part of this course were the bi-weekly snapshot assignments. The requirements were unclear and so were was his expectations.
if you have to fill a history course this is the course for you you watch a history based movie and write a three paragraph paper at the end of the section you write a paper on the section so easy, but do not miss the movie or class or you miss alot.
I took one of his online classes. This class was difficult, but he rewards those that follow directions and put effort into getting a good grade. There was a lot of critical thinking involved. He is very quick at posting grades and giving his insight on the assignments. Don't expect this class to be easy, but a good grade is possible with hard work
I took his History of Michigan class online. He was very helpful and easily contatced, always emailed back right away. Grades were posted the day they were turned in and expectations/due dates were crystal clear. Graded hard but rewarded those who participated in every assignment. Good professor.
This professor is poor at best. He does not understand the proper way to give exams and quizzes, sets up his students for failure. I have always had excellent grades, and I am a history major. This guy is a joke.
I took this as a summer class - extremely unclear on all major assignments.
This guy was tough. He wasn't very helpful when it came to describing what to do and that caused my grades to drop significantly. I've never had a professor grade as tough as him. He email back right away however when he does he is very snobby. Grades posted a few days after. Overall,I learned more from the book than him. Don't take him!
Do not take this online class with this teacher/professor. Very arrogant and not very helpful. Alot of writing, but that is not a problem. Problem is the way he words assignments. Not sure what he wants. All grading is subjective. Did not learn as much as I wanted to. Too worried about if what I was turning in is what he wanted.
Hilarious, engaging, and enthusiastic, I recommend this professor highly. The workload isn't excessive and the tests are well written. Any decent student will do very well in Mr. Broyles' class.
Very animated and engaging teacher. He's opinionated, but amusing. I spent most of the semester feeling as if I was failing. As an honor student I found that discouraging. In the end, my attendance, attention, and effort paid off. I would recommend him to serious students.
Terrible teacher. He talked the whole time without a powerpoint and made it difficult to take notes. What he talked about in class was on the exams and what was in the book was on the quizzes. Very confusing. He ranted on different topics that wern't relevant. I dropped the class because his teaching was unclear
I would NOT suggest taking this class online/over the summer! He assigns way too much reading and discussion posts. He is rude in replying to questions via email. Critical thinking in every assignment. He assigns homework/reading like a 300 level university course. He made me hate history and my summer.
For the 6 quizzes you have to read the book, it's a must. For the exams, both book & lectures help. He lectures for the entire class, so take notes on a laptop. He's as engaging as possible & very opinionated & doesn't speak like a boring professor. He knows his stuff & will help you. He grades to make sure you pass if you show up & try. EC offered
I took his HIST 1700 class online for a requirement. His assignments are longer and require a lot of reading but he really lays out what the requirements are for the assignment, making it really easy to get As on! Easy class if you put an effort into it. The tests weren't too easy but not terrible if you do the reading and understand the material.
Great
By far the best professor I've had at MCC. I've taken both parts of his Western Civ class and I've learned so much, definitely solidified my choice in career path. Presents information in a clear and objective way. I never read the book, bombed the quizzes, and got out of that class with an A because the exams are based entirely on lecture.
The class is over all good and he is a strange professor but does a good job. The only thing I really had a problem with was the quizzes. good luck with them lol.
I took one of his Western Civilization courses, it was interesting at the beginning but after the mid-term it just seemed to drone on and on. He really knows what he's talking about and seems passionate about history, but he includes a lot of information in each of his lectures. His quizzes are difficult (lots of reading) but his exams are okay!
he knows his history, but he's too conservative, politically. that's never a good thing
Mr. Broyles is a good professor. You can really tell he has a passion for history. His lectures are long and packed with a lot of info. I recommend recording the lectures. There are only 2 tests and the format for them is different but tries to play to everyone's different learning and test taking styles. I would take another of his classes.
This professor has poor communication skills. Do not take an on-line class with him. He does not give help Assignments confusing and unclear of what he is looking forward. The means on "snap shots" are 55 out of 100. may know history but not how to teach! He has no interest in helping you be successful. So sad much time put into this poor results
This professor is one of the few that have impact my college life. His lectures are funny and easy to follow. There are no power-points so be ready to take notes. Exams are very easy if you come to the lecture
Honestly the WORST prof. His assignments are vague, you don't know what he is looking for and nothing is explained. Emailed him with questions and he responded condescending like I should have already known the answer. If a student has a question, it should be answered with encouragement. Clearly you didn't explain good enough if a student has ?s
WORST TEACHER FOR AN ONLINE CLASS!! His assignments are very vague and ambiguous, you try to answer it the best you can with the book information and the extra material, and its still wrong! He will single you out if you don't answer you the way HE wants it answered! He might be better in a classroom, but not online.
Professor Broyles' lectures are definitely interesting and engaging. His exams are super tough because he only teaches through lectures. This means if you skip a class day or slack on your notes you're in trouble. It also means no handouts, powerpoints, study guides, or visual learning techniques.
This was my second online class and it was definitely hard. He grades you really hard and if it is not exactly what he wants, he won't give you credit even if you thought you were doing it correctly. He only comments on your post if you do them wrong or not what he was looking for. DOES NOT GIVE YOU SECOND CHANCES OR MAKEUPS! Would not recommend.
Test revolve around the stories he tells, not what the book or internet have to say. Grade based on two exams and a few miscellaneous assignments. Fairly easy if you takes good notes.
Don't take this class over the summer. too much reading and it's hard to keep up with this class alone when you're taking 2 other classes and also working. His grading is honestly stupid, he grades upon not completion nor accuracy, but he wants the straight up correct answer. If not? Oh you just fail... wouldn't recommend, not taking again!
By far the worst professor ever! He grades you really hard. If he doesn't like your answer or if he thinks its not specific enough he will give you NO credit. Would not recommend!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. One of the hardest classes I've ever had to take. You have to spend at least an hour and a half a day just reading the chapters he gives from a book that uses really hard historical words. Unless you're really good at history, this class is not for you. He gives way too many assignments a week. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
I honestly loved having professor Broyles. Hes a very funny guy and hes super down to earth. Lectures are all handwritten, but he keeps them entertaining! He kept me laughing throughout my whole semester, I would definitely take him again!
Very divided opinions on this man. In my opinion, he is absolutely hilarious and his lectures are super engaging. He uses funny life story's and related them to his lectures. He is a fantastic speaker and is extremely passionate about what he teaches. He is, however, a tough grader on his exams. Pay attention and you'll be absolutely fine
He's an awesome professor. He makes his lectures relateable so they're easy to remember. All you have to do is show up to class. I was the top student and if you are then you get a free book. He's a really nice guy and has four daughters. His sense of style is also a wonderful reason to show up to class.
Broyles was awesome! If you pay attention to his lectures, the exams/papers will be very easy. Also, if you get the highest grade in the class you get a free book.
I took an online class with him and it was one of the worst ones yet. Assignments were vague, and if not to his liking, will get you a flat out 0. There were many times where he would make us choose a side (ex Greek vs Roman) to write about, and if you chose the wrong one according to him, you would lose credit no matter what. No exception at all.
I've never had a professor as bas as this one. His assignments have very vague detail's, and he grades you very unfairly. He gives you assignments where you have to side against something, if you side on the one he doesn't agree with, you're game over. He gave me a 0 because I edited my assignment, and put a comma when it should have been a period
This class is very lecture heavy so regular attendance is needed and there is little need for the book because he tests on his lectures. I found this class to be fun and very interesting. Make sure that you take good notes. He loves his subject and knows what he is talking about. He can be opinionated, however, he warns you when he is.
Awful. He was very rude and inconsiderate. Gave me 50% for changing one letter in a discussion post. I tried emailing him but he did not respond. Take literally anyone else. I have never received a C in my entire educational career until now.
Worst professor i have ever taken! His assignments arent specific and his lectures and tests are really tough. If you dont do the assignments 100% according to what he likes hell give you a bad grade. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He's a good online professor. About 4 assignments a week and usually not too time-consuming. Clear about what he is asking for in your assignments. The only tests are the midterm and final. A solid choice for this specific class.
I had such a horrible experience with him. I reached out for help and he literally just told me to re-read the directions. Not friendly at all, grades super hard on your papers.. I would never take one of his classes again. I received higher grades in my actual nursing classes than I did in his history class which is a little messed up...
I took an online intro history class with this professor. The content of the class was not difficult but the professor expects a ton of textbook reading on top of excessively long articles. Class discussions are difficult to get full points on because he expects very specific answers whether it's opinion-based or not.
I'm so upset he doesn't reply to questions or feedback you may have. It was an online class and he does not care about the students at all. You are teaching yourself. The test questions are from all over and there is no way to study it. It is time for 60 minutes and it's 50 questions not easy at all. He does not offer extra credit for any assignmet
The guy is kind of rudet and biased to say the least. History is always up for debate and the answers are typically very arbitrary, however, to him there is only black and white. Even if you use legitimate sources like a news platform with hard facts, your grade is all up to his OPINION.
Professor Broyles is one of the best teachers that I have had in my life. His lectures are relevant and not politicaly biased, he is very good at giving a view on things from a central point of view. His classes are easy if you pay attention to what he is saying and they will benefit your education in history tremendouly. I highly recommend him.
This professor was so passionate which resonated with me so much. He has a love for history and is sure to engage his students. He does a lot to keep the class from getting boring and runs off into tangents here and there. Broyles is understanding and despite being a hard grader, seems to a lot to keep his students from failing.
Mr Broyles was a great professor. He's passionate, knowledgeable, and pretty damn funny. Not much use for the book. Very simple grading criteria... midterm, final, and a simple paper. Go to the DIA for extra credit. If I need another history class this is my guy!
DO not take this class online! At least 3 long articles a week plus the book. So much work!
Love this guy
I would take this professor again in an instant. His class was so much fun because of him. Hist1400 is watching older/historical movies and writing a small essay about a question he asks. He livens up the movies with his spirit. The required book is an interesting read.
His class is easy but he believes Alex Jones level conspiracies and loves to share them before teaching his subject.
Professor broyles is a great teacher and he really does challenge his students to learn beyond what they already think they know. His discussions and article seem to be very clear .I really enjoyed the class if challenged me to think outside the box when it comes to history in general.
I took this class online during the summer, probably the worst class I've taken. Each week you can expect at least 5 articles to read on top of the textbook. He isn't fair. It's very time consuming. Don't take.
The online class isn't that bad. Just do what he asks for each post or paper and you'll be fine, he is pretty clear. Be sure to use evidence from the related article, or book for each one. The midterm and final are heavily based on the book, 50 questions in 60 minutes. Overall not that bad.
By far the worst professor I've ever had in my college career. I work hard for my grades and always end up with an A or a B. Not this class. I worked my butt off, but still couldn't cut it. His assignments are extremely vague and his grading is very biased. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ANY CLASSES!!!! I've never been so frustrated.
This dude does not care about youre personal time and expects way to much for a online beginning history class. Makes it not fun to learn and grades hard. Very broad assignments and long replys and replys Of replys required that are dumb. Dont take him, never had a problem with a professor till him.
Prof. Broyles is not very clear in what he wants for assign. If you dont agree with what he thinks is the right answer, he will take points(theres 2) He has 0 leinincy and you better be careful on timeing of when things are due, you will get points taken off if not in by 11:55. Lots of reading! Articles are badly written, hard to understand.
One of the best History professors I've ever taken. Each lecture is of great entertainment teaching you both History and its unique aspects. I would highly recommend taking the on ground class which is more relaxed and offers you a better lecture than whatever the online garbage has. Professor Broyles will make you love history.
good professor. dresses up in costume and brings items in. have a midterm, final and one paper due but don't get a lot of structure on it. talks the whole time.
Ive never had a professor like this. He will create an assignment asking you what you think about a subject and then say he thinks only one answer is correct. Which makes no sense to me at all. He is such a tough grader. Ive never struggled so much with a class before. His assignments make no sense at all, he words them oddly on purpose I think.
I think he's a great professor, easy to get ahold of. Fair grader, you have to do the work. I got full credit when I disagreed with his opinion. Tests are hard. You have to know all the little things you wouldn't think to study. His directions are extremely clear, you just work through the modules. Lots of reading. 8 week course was a ton of work.
He gave extra credit for the final and a general review. You have to write 250 words per initial post and 2 comments and 2 sub comments with 100 words for most assignment. However, there were some where the word minimum was taken off and you wouldn't need to post a comment. If anything is after the due date, it's a 0. This was my experience.
In 2019, I had the absolute pleasure of taking Professor Broyles for HIST 1500. Western Civilization to 1648. This man is an intellectual juggernaut and he is 100% worth your time and your money. His ability to capture your attention with his story telling is incredible. A must have/take for anyone studying history.
As far as 8-week classes go, this one wasn't too difficult. There are a lot of discussion posts and writing assignments, but if you follow the instructions they can be easy and interesting. Textbook chapters are super long and have to do with the test material. Assignments don't really help with tests. Study textbook definitions for test.
Professor Broyles was great! Lots of busy work and chapter work to read each week. About 3-5 assignments per week with one midterm and a final exam. He gives you all the information you need to succeed just turn in your work. READ THE SYLLABUS FOR AN EXTRA CREDIT OPPOURTUNITY. He also gives extra credit at the end of the class so do not worry.
I loved professor Broyles! He gave really interesting backstories and facts. He went above and beyond what the basics of the topics were, and gave you all the information needed + more. I loved the movies, and he added cool little tidbits to the movies we were watching. The history book he assigned was also a fun / cool read.
He was a wonderful teacher and a great guy. There were times where I couldn't stay after , so I went to his office hours if I needed help for anything. Although, I would make sure to email him or tell him that you will be visiting his office hours just in case. Make sure you read the syllabus and watch at the end of the class for extra credit.
Prof. Broyles was an AMAZING teacher. I loved the way he taught! He brought in artifacts and remakes of some of the things he was talked about. Some students couldn't make it to class, but he let them be on zoom which was really nice of him. He is very knowledgeable about the topics, and makes things interesting. It was a pleasure taking his class.
Professor Broyles was a great teacher. His lectures usually ran the full time, maybe 10 minutes under/over. If it did run under, he would let you go, rather than keeping you till the end of class even though they're done. If it wasn't a test day it was normally a lecture. He made it incredibly interesting. I really loved his class. Please take it!!
Depending on the things you read, you will get heavily differentt opinions on Professor Broyles. For me, he was a great teacher. He brought in artifacts and replicas that were very cool. He gave out a bit of extra credit (syllabus and at the end of the class). There was some reading, and lectures filled the time. His grading is fine, so no worries.
Cool guy. Cool movies. Cool class.
Maybe you shouldn't take this class if you don't enjoy analytical writing and really exploring history. The written assignments were interesting and informative. Tricky tests but doable if you pay attention to the textbook and what was taught through the assignments. Felt like I learned quite a bit. Overall, an enjoyable online class.
HIST 1500 is painfully unoptimized for an accelerated online course. I looked forward to this class, but if you are anything other than a full-time student DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. There are no lectures and anything that's late- Even by 20 minutes is an automatic 0. I would not be surprised if this curriculum was copy/pasted from a longer course.
1500 online was the most difficult class I took at Macomb. Everything about the course was unclear and vague, and the workload was excessive. Seemed to be a collection of miscellaneous assignments with no clear connection, with tests based off of the bone-dry textbook. I am an A student, but I didn't stand a chance in that class.
He had me thinking that it wasn't worth trying to continue my education. The way he teaches makes no sense AT ALL. When you ask him to explain something he goes off topic and makes you even more confuse. He grades extremely heavy for no reason at all. Take it from me DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Mr. Broyles was amazing. Brought in relics that we were able to hold, explained and showed how some things were done during history. He is VERY lecture heavy though, if you sit down in his class be prepared to take notes. He does take mostly everything from the textbook so if your confused about something you can look it up or message him. Amazing
Professor Broyles had good things about him, he would bring in items to class and TRY to make class interesting. It just didn't work for me, the way he taught made me confused and he talked so fast. The exams had nothing to do with what we learned in class, mostly textbook. Lots of reading and writing work, if you take this class read the textbook.
lecture heavy but engaging and fun
Fun teacher, he'd bring in a bunch of cool stuff for us to see and touch. Assignments were interesting to me so I didn't have a problem writing for them (only 150 word minimum)
Cool and chill guy
Cool dude just do your work and you're good
I always did great in that history class, but this class wasn't it for me. I felt that most of my time was just doing sub threads/discursion posts rather than learning. There's a lot of long articles to read, I bought the textbook, but I never used it. You just have to figure out what he looks for, read the syllabus! Some lessons were interesting!
This teacher was VERY Helpful and went above and beyond to loan me his personal copy of the textbook (previous edition) I ended up getting my own copy, but the gesture was very kind. He made the class easily accessible and uniform routines and due dates from week to week. He made sure I was able to pass his course despite my lack of resources.
Extra credit for discussion participation Well structured course Very routine Great professor
Prof. Broyles is an old-school teacher. He grades hard, but it just means you actually have to put effort into the class. The more you put into the class, the more you get out of it.
