He is willing to take as manny drafts as you can write to improve your grade on papers. He grades his mid-terms rediculouslly strict, but its done an a curve, which I feel is unfair, especially to the people on the opposite ends of the scale.
This class is very boring and it is hard to get a good grade on your essays. If you want a really challenging class this is the one to take.
He has an unfortunate habit of answering questions with rhetorical questions. It’s really annoying because when you need to know what he wants from you (so that you can get a good grade) he's NEVER clear.
I really enjoyed his style of teaching. He really made me think and I got alot out of the class. He is not easy at all, but lets you rewrite the essays as many time as you want, which is alot of work for him too. He really wants to see you improve your writing ability.
I'll grant that he makes people think, but that's only because they're wondering if they left the stove on. Either he feels his class is stupid, or he likes to take credit, but if you say something right, he will make you out to be wrong and mock you for it and minutes later repeat what you said.
Worst class I ever had. I didn't understand what he wanted. He was veg about everything. The class was extremely boring and he graded harshly on essays.

Horrible class, I didnt learn anything and its soo hard to even pull a C
No matter how hard you try, there is no way to get a good grade in his class. There are essays every week and some of the questions you have to respond to are not clear and when you ask the meaning he comes back with another question. He runs you in circles.
I thoroughly enjoyed the class. He definitely requires "thinking outside the box". He wants you to dig deeper than the superficial. You get out of it what you put into it. If you're looking for easy, look elsewhere; but if you want to learn something, take his class. Kudos, Mike.
hes a nice guy but he grades us like we are trying writing a novel
I learned nothing from his class; had to retake it with a competent teacher. He was unclear to the point of frustration. I felt like I needed to be high to understand what the heck he was saying. He hardly talked about English, mostly just rambled on like an old hippie waiting for the bong to come back around. Take him only if you want to space out
Impossible to get good grades. He used ALL my essays as examples to our class and I still received a B, even though he supposedly grades on a curve. Take him if you want to listen to inane, hippy rambling. He doesn't challenge anyone, he's just condescending!
essays due almost every week, kept making me rewrite mine for grades. I found him very interesting and it was fun to joke with him even though he would just glare at me 90% of the time. made me a much better writer but not worth taking!
seriously the worst teacher i've ever had! extremey unclear, and hard to follow. doesn't teach about writing skills, but talks about current events and "feelings". gives you bad grades if your opinion differs from his. I had no idea what he was supposedly teaching, so i withdrew from the class and retook it from a real teacher.
Not kidding, worst teacher I ever had. Anyone interested in his course should be warned that his class is horrible.
Brunner will make you work for your grade. I busted my a$% for an A, but I really felt like I earned it. I haven't gotten below an A on a single college paper since, so I learned a lot from him. He will give you tons of help; it's best to see him during office hours. He even met me at his office at SSU since I lived in RP. I'd recommend him.
very difficult grader, but made me a much better writer. lots of papers and constantly makes you rewrite for grades. he is a weird guy and usually u just sit there confused.
Most difficult class I've ever had. I worked my ass off to get the grades I did. Brunner gives great feedback, and always lets you know what you need to do to improve your paper. Great teacher, if you're willing to learn.
By far the most challenging and rewarding class I am yet to take at SRJC. If you truly want to learn about composition, and are up to the task of earing a good grade, I recommend this instructor.
Very difficult class it is NOT AN EASY A!!! Personally I didn't enjoy the class or assignments, but the random discussions were always interesting. 7-8 papers are required as well as very specific quizzes and tests. Essays are re-writable and from 750-1000 words. Nice guy but this is a serious class. Midterm, final, and research paper are involved.
Cool looking guy, but if your gonna get anywhere in his class you have to get the wax cleared out of your ears and sit up front. This was by far the most challenging english class I've taken because of the teacher!! He was NEVER helpful and seriously, he used "uh-huh okay" about 50-odd times in a matter of minutes
Dont take this class unless you dont want 2 learn anything at all. The whole class is spent trying 2 guess what the teacher is looking 4. Class completely useless. His writing is chicken scratch. I was supposed 2 b n Eng 1A took this class as a review. I almost failed! Unfair grader! Tells you not 2 do something but you wont pass if you dont do it.
laughs at all his jokes..not funny but jus funny when he laughs..lots of hw..jus do it correctly and ur good..lokin 4 an easy a?..dont take dis class...u gota work hard 4 an a!
He was a great teacher that really made you think. He could get deep down to the root of a problem and help you fix it. The class was fun, homework was easy to keep up with. Some of the tests were hard but hey it's college you have to actually try hard and not just blame the teacher when YOU don't understand something. You can learn a lot from him
extremely smart guy, nice, pretty easy-going, makes you think about things that would go un-noticed but this also means he finds many things wrong with your papers exc. not an easy A at all if you can even get an A. i didnt, but i did learn alot
Style is very laid back, yet expects you to do your personal best. Re-writes are allowed for higher grade up through end of the semester. Not a class for those who want an easy A, but good class for those who want to be challenged.
I took his ENG 100 in the summer, and I took his ENG 1A this semester, then I postpond my ENG 1B for fall , 2009 becasue I want to continue learning from him. That mean something, he has taught me the most important lesson to a human being, THINK!
He is a good teacher that wants people to think and not just spit out a couple of words on a piece of paper the night before the essay is due i know that if i would of tryed my best i would of pased the class with a B.
DOn't Be scared off by him. He is an awesome teacher. This was a difficult class, I worked my butt of for an A. I came out of this class a better writer. You earn your grade-which makes this class very rewarding. Rewrite every paper, and study for quizzes using note cards, and participate in class. Do that and you will have no problems.
Very nice guy, but his class is a bit hard. he does give you every chance to get an A. if you don't its your own fault not his.
This teacher is hard but the class is worth it. I always thought English was my worst subject and it showed when he didn't even give me a grade on my first papers. After re-writing some of my papers 2-4X, using the English lab and finally figure out how to think outside the box, I finished this class with an A and confidence and clarity to write!
Great teacher, but very difficult class. Makes you work hard for your grade. I repeatedly had to rewrite my essays, and struggled to get a B, but I learned to be able to analyze my own writing, and question the validity of my points. Hard class, but will help you to become an improved writer
Brunner is a great teacher, very very hard grader, you have to work hard to try and keep a b. but overall, it was surprising to see how much progress i made as a writer, because of his grading. the only problem i had with the class was, i always got just a b, and would never get any feed back for what i needed to get an a.
Nice man, but didnt enjoy the class :(
VERY difficult to understand. I have always loved English and this class made me hate it. He is impossible to understand, doesn't give clear instructions and then grades extremely hard. More than half of my class scored below 50% on the first test.
He can be intimidating at first, and this is the hardest class I have EVER taken, but he's a very good teacher. If you stick with the class, rewrite your essays over and over, and work REALLY hard, you will learn much more than with any other teacher. If you actually talk with him, he will try to help you as much as he can and yo will learn a lot.
This guy is the hardest teacher I have ever had. I don't ever understand him. I'm only half way through his class and I feel like giving up and throwing my papers in his face. He's not very specific in what he wants..
This teacher is nice but very hard to understand. To me he's an easy grader because he graded our class on the curve. If you study for the tests, you'll score high on them, and if not, then even the curve won't help you out. Even though I passed, I wouldn't take his class again.
PLEASE do not take a class with this teacher!!! I can't understand anything he says, he speaks extremely quiet, and the whole time he speaks you need to try to figure out what he is even trying to ask. He is not good at trying to put together his ideas to teach. He laughs at everything! His assignments are completely vague and disorganized.HARD CLA
This class is HELLA HARD! the teacher is super tough! Hardest english class ever. i got a C and i worked my butt off to get that C. but the teacher is hella sick and funny! great guy
well,at first, he's talks quiet, then he shoots questions that provoke you to think or to get the hell out of the class. I decided to stay and even if i failed i knew i was going to learn something more than just english composition, and I did, I learned how to learn. This teacher is hard but worth talking to and going to for help and question.
Really hard to understand. The guy is in his own world. Possibly senile...
He's a really great guy but very difficult to follow. He is passionate about English but communicating clearly is difficult for him. It was hard to follow most lectures because he spoke in Q's rather than giving the answer.
LOved this teacher.. he was really nice and taught me a lot! i'm taking another one of his classes next semester. hes hard to understand but will help you alot and let you re-write your papers!
This was my favorite class ever. Brunner has high standards and challenges his students to consider the words they use. He is very selective with his own verbage and this could be difficult for people who aren't used to that kind of level of expression. I think he is a fantastic teacher because EVERYBODY can learn something from him.
Brunner is a different kind of teacher. He can be confusing, but if you listen you will learn something from the way he speaks. He convinced me poetry is worthwhile. He loves language, he will carefully read, and mercilessly critique your papers. He insists upon excellence. He taught me something important, though I'm not sure exactly what it was.
Brunner was the hardest English teacher I've ever had. Your whole grade is based off of essays, and you WILL get a C on each one, but you can redo them as much as you like. He wants you to succeed, and if you work hard, he will reward you, and even bump your grade. Even though he was very difficult, I'm glad because he made me a much better writer.
Mr. Brunner was a fascinating man and entertaining. He could have been more supportive when people contributed to class discussion. If you are a pretty good writer then you can float through the class with little effort.
Brunner was somewhat confusing, I couldn't tell what he wanted out of us, he was vague and disorganized. As the semester continued I realized he was trying to get us to think outside the box and he wanted us to succeed at becoming better writers, if inly he was better at communicating. My writing skills vastly improved by following his critiques.
I took his class in Spring 2013. He's a really nice man, but very confusing and vague. he answers questions with a question. He's usually off topic. Very hard grader, but his lectures are vague and forget getting an A on an essay! Lots of homework and 8 essays. He does let you re-do your essays for a better grade.
I took this as a summer class & received an A. It is very possible to earn a good grade, you can revise essays as many times as you want & there isn't much turn-in homework. Brunner can seem unclear, but it is because he wants you to use your brain. He gives semi-ambiguous essay prompts in the hopes that you will ask & answer your own questions.
This is by far the worst teacher I've ever had. I don't know who is able to learn anything from him but they clearly aren't in any sort of logical study field (math, engineering, computers, etc). His lectures are so abstract they should be in an art gallery, and his advice on revising your guaranteed B-C papers is laughable. Your GPA is history.
Tough, but very helpful, grader, he also forced his students to really think about all of the arguments, essays, poems, and other reading assignments we were given. Loved the lectures, they were very interesting. Definitely worth taking his class, I will be taking 1B with him next semester if I can. Work hard and you will get a good grade.
Michael Brunner certainly deserves more than the 2.7 he's given. Sure, he is a bit of a tough grader and his lectures can feel a bit vague. At the same time, he's a high energy, passionate kind of guy who wants to help you succeed, and his lectures are pretty interesting. A heads up - he's intentionally vague to help you "critically think"
Very unclear and hard to understand. Assigns lots of essays. His lectures are very long, boring and confusing
He seems very interested in English and wants you too do well, but his classes are confusing and drawn out. He always wants specifics for everything. Essay topics are hard to understand even if you did the reading that is assigned with them. Tests are ridiculously hard. The highest midterm grade our class had was a 71% . I should have dropped.
Took Brunner for ENG1A and was very difficult at first. Lots of long papers. Tests are impossible so it is almost not even worth trying. Final paper was a 8 pg research paper. Essentially, he gives you higher grades if you show that you want to do better. Go to his office hours and you will pass the class. Get on his good side and he will love you
I absolutely loved Brunner's class. Be aware he is a hard grader and does assign a lot of essay's but the topics and lectures we discussed were very intriguing. I learned a lot from his class. It's hard to stay engaged in an English class sometimes, but not this one. Also, always short and sweet. We were always let out early!
Michael brunner is by far the best english teacher I have had. He pushes you to use your head. I highly recommend him i you are trying to improve your writing skills.
This class probably would have been a nightmare if he wouldn't have let us rewrite our essays until we received the grade we wanted. He definitely makes you work for it though. I turned in the same essay with rewrites more than six times until I got my A. With that being said, the end was sad. He's an interesting guy that cares about his class.
Brunner by far is my favorite math prof. He lets you to rewrite your essay as many times as you want, and if you get all A's on your essays you'll get an A for the class. he likes to argue with students about topics, not like an angry argument but more like a debate. Accepts late work at any time.
If you take Brunner's class, get ready to work. He is articulate, engaging and approachable but very demanding in terms of assignment quality. Lets students turn in assignments late and rewrite essays anytime. You will leave his class a better writer and a better person!
In order to succeed in this class, you MUST rewrite your essays. You are allowed to do this as many times as it takes for you to get your desired grade. It is possible to get an A, but you will have to work for it. There are assigned essays every week. Our class only had one "true" exam (the midterm.) The class lectures often veer off topic.
Michael Brunner is a very tough grader. Many people in my English 5 glass were struggling. He is very soft spoken and I often couldn't hear what he was saying so I had to sit in the very front. This is the first English class I have had to drop. Unless you have a light schedule, the workload is too heavy.
Can't stand this man. All he ever talks about is media and how our generation can't focus. I would be OK with this if it didn't make up the majority of his class. He doesn't understand basic idioms, and his references are usually wrong. He doesn't accept other interpretations, making poetry impossible. How is he an English prof? Its embarrassing.
Brunner is the worst prof I have ever had. Very unclear directions for essays, did not help us understand the very obtuse readings assigned, and he requires a lot of work with little clear criteria. He does let you re-write, which is nice. Often spoke too quietly to be heard. A lot of students ended up dropping his class.
Mr. Brunners class was one of my favorites. It was very essay heavy and they counted for a big portion of the grade. However, he let us rewrite essays as many times as we needed until we got good grades on them. I frequently went to his office hours to talk to him about my essays.
Professor Brunner taught above everyones heads, for an eng1a course I cant warn you enough do not take him, you will be expected to already understand college english. His lectures lacked clarity and went from topic to topic, it was also very unclear when and what was actually assigned. Might be good for higher english, dont take him for 1A.
Online due to COVID, the class isn't half-bad. Not too much work and Zoom classes don't require rapt attention or participation.
First of all let me say that I would like to see most of the credentials that these instructors supposedly have. I was under the impression that critical thinking was an interpretation of the material that was provided to you. Don't be fooled this teacher will tell you how to write , how to think and treat you as if you don't have a brain in head.
He is literally so useless when it comes to asking for directions. Syllabus is so unclear it immediately starts off on the wrong foot. He doesn't help or give direct answers when you ask him a very simple question. He will assign you homework then give no further direction. You literally have to search his entire canvas page to find the info for hw
Professor Brunner is a fantastic teacher for ENG5. My writing skills improved immensely after taking his class. 3-5 hours of homework per week, 5 essays total in the semester. Lectures were engaging and I enjoyed all of the course material. Very accommodating in terms of due dates, and allows students to revise any asssignment for a better grade.
He was horrid to work under, his lectures had lacked clarity and had been quite difficult to keep up with. His grading can be quite harsh and worst of all he never put on his assignments on the canvas calendar so I would get home from a day of work and see I have a large assignment due by the end of the day, not taking his classes again.
I took his class the summer of 2012 and often remember how this professor would try to instill his thoughts into his students. The readings were memorable but he forced his interpretations on you. Its ok to interpret fiction however you want so long as you make a solid argument. I think he favored a certain type of student.
Get ready to struggle in this class! Professor Brunner does not know how to be clear with what he expects out of his students. I have always excelled in every single English class that I have taken, but Professor Brunner grades rather harshly with very little clear feedback.
Worst teacher I have had at the SRJC by far. Taking an online class for the semester, all of which is extremely unorganized. Get prepared for him to tell you that your opinion is wrong. Avoid this guy at all costs, save yourself the headache.
I took this class summer of 23'. I usually find English classes easy, but this is the first time I have been challenged. Do not take this class lightly as it requires a lot of effort. 3-5 hours of homework per week and 5 essays total. He is very accommodating with due dates and offers the ability to rewrite your essays. You will improve. Engage
If you can get a different professor please do so. There is little to no guidance on writing papers if you do this class online.
Absolutely awful! Do not take! He is terrible at presenting homework with clear directions, and will practically laugh at you for asking for help. He edited directions on an essay AFTER I had finished it because I got mad that he docked me lots of points for something that was not asked for originally and was not shown on samples.
He cares, he is an old school teacher and his online skills are limited but he cares about the course and your improvement through out the course which if you do the work and essay will notice. He allows late work but he is a tough grader.
This class was not it. I did take it online, in the summer, but had to drop it. He is not very helpful in his feedback. I emailed him for clarification on an assignment and he did not help me understand it any better. Tough grader for sure, also offers no modules or lectures to help us learn. You will be teaching yourself if you decide to do online
"I do not accept five paragraph essay." Who do you think you are? If you are only asking for a 750-850 word essay, how many paragraphs do you think you are getting?
