Totally cool guy, a liberal pinko, but a cool guy nonetheless. Lectures are very cool, and he really gets you thinking differently. Highly recommended.
A very engaging professor, fun to listen to, a bit liberal for my tastes, but still an incredible guy to take lecture from.

Good teacher because you can really tell he loves what he's teaching. Also, very down to earth guy.
Professor Buonanno is Awesome, he will intrigue you to think outside the box so you don't think narrow minded when it comes to Antropology and Evolution. He is one of the best Instructors i have ever had. Do the work and your grade will be fine.
I had Prof Buonanno two summers ago and he is still the best professor that I have had. Full of enthusiasm. Awesome style of teaching.
awesome teacher!!
Lots of reading, duh, but he is nice and fun. He keeps your interest and makes you WANT to read the material. A lot of writing during tests, but hey, that's college.
He is extremely fair when it comes to his grading, his style of teaching is entertaining, and unlike most instructors, you walk out of class with new knowledge.
Yikes, could we possibly hear anymore liberal persuasion or anti-christian theology in one class everyday! If that in the least bit bothers you, dont take him. Its not a hard class if you actually read, clifnotes arent too helpful. if you are able to block out the nonsense he talks about ull do fine
So what if he's liberal. This isn't a theology class. Give the guy a break. His door was always open to me, he engaged the class in discussions and is competent in his field. If you are lazy, this isn't the class for you. He inspires one to think, learn and grow and he's got a marvelous sense of humo
One of the best professors I've taken. The class was interesting not just because of the material, but because he made it fun.
Buonanno is an excellent professor! He has a complete understanding of the topics at hand and loves teaching them. If you can get past his kvetching about the government, you will find a great sense of humor. I would recommend him to anyone.
I wish he taught every subject!! Best teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!!
Buonanno is awesome. I was kind of worried at first, but now I think that anyone who doesn't get at least a high B in world lit has got to be illiterate. Interesting assignments;instructor is knowledgeable, has an excellent sense of humour, and loves to complain about politics. Just read,do your work, and you'll pass. (Oh..and The Tale of Genji Rocks.)
Pretty good teacher- very understanding too- He likes to discuss the work alot. I recommend him.
I was never the best reader or writer and i found his class very difficult but him as a professor was good
take him if you want a good yet easy professor with an awesome sense of humor.
Very fair and interesting. Watch the in class essays. Not an easy A class.
Wow!! His enthuasiasm and energy is incredible. He made Anthropology fun and exciting. LOTS of reading involved but the follow up class discussion rocked. I think he's kinda sexy too.
Great teacher! I love the way he teaches. He totally knows how to get the class involved and he talks so fast that you have to pay attention. I would recommend him to anyone if they like to laugh and learn at the same time.
I took every class he taught 3 yrs ago. He's still my favorite teacher of all time. I loved his enthusiasm about the material, and he's brilliant in both Lit&Anth. He always made us laugh. Take him! And please - his liberal stuff was not a big deal. He'll give you a new perspective on the world and life, and I wish I could take all 4 classes again!
Dr. Buonanno is my personal hero.
I loved this teacher. He made me want to come to class. Crazy funny.
Phenonenal Professor! He is what a teacher should be... hyped about what he's teaching. I took him twice, once over a summer and the other time during fall, both online. Lots of reading, lots of writing, but you don't seem to notice while you're doing it. I'd take him again if I wasn't transfering. Very animated, and talks to you as an equal.
Great teacher willing to work with student. He will bring open debate into the classroom based on the material read. Very interesting I would say take this professor atleast once or like me 3 times.
I LOVE PROFESSOR "B". I thought that the class would be very boring. He gets the class involved in the lecture. There is alot of reading! I dont like to read. I passed with a A. But, there is alot of discussions in the class about the stories. You learn alot in AML. Take him, You'll love him.
fun teacher but the class was very boring.
I LOVE THIS TEACHER...if u read the stories and make the post u will pass the course...he is a very easy going teacher...he doesn't make u talk as long as u do all the work he loves u...hes in easy essays rock...i thought it would be a boring class but he makes it interesting bc he talks bout everything and anything
Great prof. He cares. Show interest and participate and your golden! Great class I would recommend him to anyone!
Excellent!!
Way cool professor! i would recommend him to anybody. just read the stories that he assigns and your golden. all of his tests are essays. his lectures are entertaining too!
Avoid unless you like reading 100 to hundreds of pages per week. And not being told what areas to pay attention to so you can answer the questions. No explanation of what you read, no hint to the quiz questions, and you will not know the subject of your mid/final until that day... nice guy, but not teaching a thing.
one of my favorite professors EVER. just read the assigned reading (which is hefty, but simple) and you'll ace the essay tests. honestly, i skipped more class than i ever should have due to the early morning schedule and i still aced both classes. he is genuine, empathetic, entertaining, and highly knowledgeable. i always recommend him.
Best professor I had at MCC so far - extremely insightful lectures relating literature to real life and study of society. This professor gets every single person in class talking! Amazing guy. Take him!
Dr. B is the best prof. I have taken at mcc. My mother took him now i am taking him. He is very understanding and compassionate when something comes up. His subject is very interesting and he keeps the class interested in the topic. Yes there is a lot of reading but so what! You read, you take a test you get an A. Easy
hes awesome... class is long but, hes definitely a character and fun.
He is one of the best teachers i have ever had. He truly cares about his students and how they do in and out of the classroom. I have taken 3 courses with him and hope to take more in the future.
I took his online class. I don't know if it was because the class was online, but I didn't like him very much. He didn't communicate well and often took him a week or two to grade our tests. The tests themselves were very hard because the books that they were on were hard to understand. I think if you are going to take this class, take it on campus
Buonanno was an awesome professor. He likes when the class gets involved and asks questions. He tells you what part of the readings to focus on for the exams...which the whole class is based on--4 short essay questions over 50+ pages of reading.
took this online. it is a lot of reading no matter if its in class or not so it was easier to do it online. we didnt have to buy the book. he posted all the readings on angel. tests were pretty easy, usually just 4 or 5 questions per story and have to do several posts and discussions for each story
Best Professor I've ever had!!! In my years at MCC, I took just about every class that he was teaching. He provides incredible insight on the assigned literature, and it is able to open your eyes to so many new ideas. I wish there was a way to take him for all of my classes!
I took the web version and I liked this class a lot. Tests were easy if you did the req. reading (1-3 question quizzes). Some of the reading was difficult, but he always responded to emails.
I personally know Buonanno, and he is awesome, one of the best people I met since coming to MCC. As a teacher, he's also great. I didn't get to take him in the classroom, just online, but I'm sure he is 10 times better in person. Lots of reading, but not hard.
I took his online class and ended up with 160% in the class. Just be creative with the Discussion post and there is no way you will fail! You can get 5 point per a Discussion, and I normally got a 20 out of 5 points. He just wants to see you trying. AMAZING TEACHER, TAKE HIM.
Buonanno Is Great! Super Fun Class! He Makes Learning Fun & Easy! Anyone Who Does Not Agree Is Just Plain Lazy! Also, If You Don't Agree With What He Says And Teaches, Than You Are Just Too Uneducated!! Buonanno Rocks!! =)
Dr. Michael Buonanno is the BEST professor you will ever have. He is VERY interesting, funny, helpful, approachable, knowledgeable, honest, and respectful. His classes are so engaging that the work in them seems EASY and FUN. However, if you chose not to come to class or do your "work", you may have a similar perspective as the 10/14/2009 post has.
I took his american literature class online and just loved it. He's a great teacher, very helpful, and I really enjoyed the class. His online instruction made sense and as long as I put the effort in I would get great grades. He is a really great teacher, loved the class.
I took the online class, it was extreamly hard! Lots and lots of reading. Some of the test where short answer 3 questions and only 15min or 30min. It would also take him days to reply to e-mails. I am so glad this class is over! I ended up with an 89 and he did NOT round it up to an A :(
Alot of reading, a lot of reading but he is easy to please. Somehow the way he teaches, you end up learning a lot and don't even realize you've put out so much effort. Really his classes are painless.
Online class. A lot of writing is expected. Textbook use is very heavy. Tests/quizzes are fairly simple if you read. Gordon Rule, so there is a lot of writing in the forums expected. Great guy when I had the chance to speak with him. Email response was decent. If you post more than required postings you will received extra credit. A+ in this one.
There is a lot of reading, but COME ON it's a freaking Lit class for heavens sake! The readings are always interesting and the quiz's are never hard if you read the entire text. Very energetic and animated in class makes class discussions interesting never makes anyone feel stupid. I have always looked forward to the class.
58 pages to read on average per lecture, this does not include the online text reading material assigned. If you have any other classes i would avoid taking this class. The professor is easy to please but the reading is very heavy and takes up alot of time
Awesome teacher! I took his online class, lots of interesting fun reading. Quiz's are short and easy. They are timed but if you read the full reading then you should have no problem getting it done. His grading is awesome.Put forth your full effort and you will be rewarded. I got a 120 on a quiz. :)
The class didn't require a book because it was all online. Also yes there was alot of reading, but it was interesting stuff. As long as you read and pay attention you will pass with an A. Very fast in responding to emails. Someone was removed from the class for plagerism so just do your work. Would love to have this teacher again!
Great class, interesting material. Grading consisted of discussion posts, replies, and written response quizzes. Extra credit for long responses on quizzes. Regular participation is strongly recommended, he takes off if you cluster at the end. Easy gordon rule writing class.
Excellent Prof. Willing to work with you. Heavy reading, You can't breeze through it, but he lets you pick what you want to post on regarding the readings. He chose excellent and interesting World Lit. Stories to read and discuss. Great Professor!
I took the online section of this course. It is VERY reading heavy, but Professor Buonanno was a pleasure to work with. He gives extra credit for discussions and quizzes if you have good answers. No textbooks to buy, all readings are posted online.
Great Professor! Took online and ended with an A. Lots of reading but worth the time. If you do more work than necessary he gives out extra credit. Got a 120 and 110 on discussion posts for replying to more than expected. Easy A if you put the time in and read everything. Would take any class this professor offers!
This was my third on-line class with this Prof. He is FANTASTIC! Lots of reading (all on-line) - but VERY interesting. Posts are whatever you feel like writing about, based on what you read. Responds promptly to emails. I would take ALL of his classes. Great guy! You won't be sorry.
I took this class on campus. Although he is mostly an online teacher, he said multiple times that he prefers teaching in a classroom. Reading is HEAVY but interesting. It's all online, so there's no textbook. There is a quiz every Monday on the assigned reading (for comprehension). No final exam. I am taking another class of his next semester!
For an online class, if you want to get an A, he wants plenty of blog posts. Not an easy A. Reading is mandatory - and there is quite a bit of it. The class covers all ancient works from Gilgamesh to the Inferno. Answers questions quickly. No textbook - he uses online readings instead. If you put the work in, it will be rewarded.
I took the class online, and I do not recommend him. It was all heavy reading and he graded so hard. I tired multiple times asking questions for him to be more specific with what he wanted us to talk about in our discussion posts, but he was never helpful. Wish I would have dropped.
Would not recommend this class EVER!! I have taken many online classes but this one was awful!! He makes you read his writings (no text book) and you must write paragraphs for the quiz questions which are timed and he does not give you ample time to write them. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
This class is very heavy in reading so be ready! Everything was very interesting though. Buonanno is hilarious and spends the entire class lecturing in a real laid back style, where great discussion takes place between the class. The only grades are exams on the readings which are 3 or 4 questions he says aloud. He grades easy on them.
He is very knowledgable and passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are hilarious and interesting. The class is easy, however, in my personal experience I found him to be quite unfair and unsympathetic of a personal issue which caused my absences. I wasnt even allowed to attend class again. For this, I'm not sure if I would recommend him.
Interesting material, especially for online. You can make an A if you follow the directions, complete the reading, and POST OFTEN!
I've taken three online classes from him. You have to do the reading and don't wait till the last minute to post. He'll take away points if you do. Otherwise, its not a hard A and he gets back to you quickly. No book to buy. Everything is online.
I took the 6 week online course, so it was harder than normal. He is a very fair grader and always gives extra credit for going above (I ended with a 116%). He is very nice and gives all material at the beginning of the week, so it is up to you. I spent about 15 hours doing the reading per week, but the topics were so interesting I didn't mind.
Expect spending several hours reading his blogs that are required for the test. The readings are very long, dense and detailed. Requires you to write paragraphs with specific detail on the quizzes and grades very hard. Wouldn't recommend.
He is a rude person and harsh grader do not take his course.
Easiest class I've taken at SCF. It's an 8 week class that flies by, NO FINAL, NO TEXTBOOK! All your reading is free online & provided by him. One discussion & one test per week. I didn't even read the stories and still got an A thanks to Sparknotes. TAKE THIS CLASS!
If you're taking this as the 8 week course, be ready to read. You have one discussion (with strict guidelines to follow) and one quiz every week. The reading material is extremely long and boring - to me, sometimes not even relevant to the course itself. A lot more history than literature. He is a tough grader and expects you to know all material.
As most online classes, there's a main post and two response posts due every week - one quiz each week. I took the Intro to Anthro 8 week course. 6 weeks of 60-70pg modules written by the professor himself. I was going into this class with negativity and finished it pleasantly surprised. Participate and read modules in entirely Easy A.
I took Buonanno, as he frequently calls himself, years ago and I highly recommend taking an in-person class with him. He's entertaining and super smart, funny, and just a really awesome professor. There used to be a line to talk to him after class, and despite his warnings against it, so many of my classmates became anthro majors because of him.
I took this class in need of a Gordon Rule requirement, at first I thought there was a ton of reading, however once you get started the course is a breeze. I actually thoroughly enjoyed my readings each week and looked forward to the discussions with my classmates. A class I thought would be tough ended up being one I was grateful to take!
There are 60 to 70 pages of reading per week. He is a tough grader but does give a lot of extra credit. The discussion posts are very open and are able to express your opinion. The quizzes are tightly timed. if you do not do the reading, you won't pass the quiz. All in all he is a fair professor and I enjoyed his class.
No textbook required, he uses his own writings. Be prepared for literature of sexual nature. Pretty obscure literature is used and discussed. It might be easy if you like very long and wordy things written by the teacher, like a seventy page article of his own opinions that you must discuss back to him, but I felt it was a waste of time and money
So many awesome things to say but so little space. I took his online Into to Anthro class and was able to chat with him many times about the material we read, in person. Very knowledgeable and also helpful when it comes to exchanging ideas. If you don't like to read, don't take his class. I read roughly 400 + printed pages through out the semester.
Difficult reading, 70-100 pages per week. Not classic literature as expected, super long reading assignments with no outlines, no bulleted points, just reams of awkward HORmanuscript by the teacher, online. (No textbook) 2-3 deadlines each week for online discussion posts and tests with super vague instructions, you never know how its being graded.
Always gives good feedback. Reading is required and provided no textbook needed. No more than 80 pages. But you sit down read some do discussion/ take a quiz. The quizzes are timed but its common sense questions if you did the reading and he doesn't grade grammar just the amount of detail you put. I was scared by some comments but class was easy
WONDERFUL class. Professor Buonanno has decades of field work and experience in anthropology, and has the knowledge to back it all up. His text is an absolute pleasure to read, and he is wonderful at discourse. There is a LOT of reading involved, though, so prepare yourself. Quizzes are essay answers, so you have a lot of freedom in interpretation.
This class was so much easier than I thought it was going to be. The reading isn't to bad. Discussions are tedious because you have to reply to several comments in order to get full credit. Tests are once a week and they are timed. Its pretty much a few questions and you write a paragraph in response. I never got a grade below 100 on my assignments
Professor Buonanno, is a wonderful teacher. There is a lot of reading in this class, but is it interesting. You have to read everything (no more then 80 pgs) otherwise you won't be able to pass the test. The tests are timed and short answers. There is a discussion every week. Very easy grader that gives extra points if you show that you care.
I took the 6 week accelerated class online. Honestly, if you work hard, you will finish with an A. He gives tons of extra credit. It's a TON of reading but the readings are very interesting.
This professor was great! I took his accelerated 6 week online class and it was very interesting! I personally enjoy reading, so the amount of reading did not bother me! I also enjoyed adding my opinion to discussion posts.
Professor Buonanno was great. Hearing people complain about the amount of reading in an accelerated LITERATURE class is bizarre to me. He knows his stuff, and his passion for teaching is obvious. Hes a fair grader, and I enjoyed his class.
Took this class online, Professor Buonanno is great overall. Theres a lot to read but the discussions and tests are all writing and he just wants to hear your thoughts. Youre guaranteed an A if you put in the effort! Wish all my classes werent like his.
The content was not what I expected for lit (it was more the history of lit) so be aware of that. But other than that, this class was great. It's so easy to earn extra points, just be thorough in your answers. There is A LOT of reading, I averaged 8-10 hours a week on this class. HIGHLIGHT the .pdfs to quickly reference for quizzes!
Awesome class, awesome professor. I took this course online and found the reading extremely entertaining and lively. You can tell Professor Buonanno knows what he's talking about and that he is passionate about it as well. There is a lot of reading but the tests are easy to pass, as long as you read EVERYTHING. It's worth it!
This is a Easy A but you have to read everything! I can't stress that enough. He asks you questions on the material you read and you must be detailed as possible. If you are extremely detailed, you can receive extra credit. I slacked one week and got a 50 on the test and still passed with a A. You also have discussions post every week.
Best professor ever! All of the reading material is his own so he is actually teaching. If you read the material, and incorporate details from the text you will get extra credit. Very colorful vocabulary, so pull out your thesaurus if you arent an English major! Doing the bare minimum will get you a minimum grade so strive for the A!!
Mr. Buonanno was a great teacher; I had his class accelerated during the spring. There was a fair amount of work and definitely a lot of reading, but for someone who doesn't like to read, I found a majority of his readings very interesting. In fact, he writes some of it (if not all) himself. Grading was fair and communication was exceptional!
Mr. Buonanno will always go above and beyond for you. Quick to answer any questions you may have, but everything is well planned and sequenced. You know what to do every week, which consists of reading an 80 pg pdf, then writing about it in the discussion board and comment under others. Over all not too difficult, just do the reading and writing!
He gave me a 70 out of 100 on a quiz that i got every question right on because i only partially participated in the weekly discussion that week (which idk if he can even do that). He also gave me zero out of 100 because i waited to long to post in the weekly discussion, even though i posted everything that was due for that particular week.
Online; Spring 8 week class. Lots of reading that took up a lot of time but they were really interesting. Make sure to answer quiz questions as detailed and lengthy as possible, as well as the discussion posts. If you do, he'll give you plenty of extra credit. If you receive a lower than expected grade he tells you why. Overall very interesting!
overall an enjoyable class, he provides all the reading material and what we read was interesting. Make sure you're prepared to read and make good discussion posts. As long as you read everything assigned the test are pretty easy (they are timed) he is a very fair grader and gives great feedback! very recommended!
I took this online and it was really easy, but you still were able to learn a lot. You basically read stories for 2 weeks and keep actively writing discussions about them. You also do a quiz with 4 or 5 essay questions. He is a very fair grader and he is really passionate about what he teaches. Awesome class and awesome professor!
If you do more than the bare minimum, then you are bound to get extra credit in this class. I took an accelerated spring online course for lit with Prof. B and it was easy as long as you set a time each week to do the reading, then the discussion posts and quizzes will be a breeze!
If you don't want to spend hours reading and writing, don't take his 8 week class. Readings are around 70 pages long PER WEEK. He expects you to give super detailed paragraph answers on the quizzes. And the discussions, you lose points if you post the day it's due. He refused to give me extra credit even though I did exactly what he said. Also rude
I was surprised to see that people disliked him! He honestly was a great teacher. Yes, it is a lot of reading but this is college AND an accelerated course. Read the pages, participate in the discussion, take the quiz. Remember to highlight important things as you read and the quizzes are easy. I ended the class with a 119.58%. Just do the work!
Michael Buonanno is GREAT! I took this as a 6 week summer course, so the reading was heavy--but to be expected in a condensed class. He gives great feedback, very fair and responds quickly to emails! Truly great and would def take a again and recommend to others.
Great teacher, always in communication with students which i appreciated. You don't need the book, you read his writing. I enjoyed reading his work. Made the class enjoyable, taking him again this semester.
Only good thing about this class is not having to purchase a book. BUT, the book he uses is his own and the way the book is worded can get confusing at times. Weekly reading include 50+ pages, that you have to read because you don't know what will be on the quiz. Quizzes are timed and you must answer in a full paragraph or two. Would not recommend
Professor Buonanno not only generated some interest in Literature that I did not know existed, but he was extremely approachable. I expected a 6 week class to be hard, and I but I was overwhelmed with the amount of reading involved I reached out to him and it changed my experience completely. Alot of reading! 69 pages was the least due weekly.
This is my absolute most favorite instructor in the whole world. I have been taught by no less than 650 people from all walks of life and for all types of reasons, and Dr Buonanno is at the very top for his knowledge, preparedness, attitude, course material, ingenuity, and overall amazing spirit shown to his students. I hope to one day emulate this
Great teacher. Very communicative and provides good feedback. Do the minimum and still pass. Do a little extra and you get lots of extra points. Prepare to read. You don't have to buy a book, he provides it, but probably 70+ pages to read a week. Quiz questions are very detailed.
Expects you to read 70+ pages per week of hard to read English. Some professors just seem like their purpose on earth is to make you spend your entire day on their one course, and Michael is definitely one of them. Take someone else
There is A LOT OF READING. 70 pages minimum per week. However, he is very nice, gets back to you quickly, provides good feedback and overall an easy class as long as you pace your work and do not procrastinate !!
