An entertaining old guy from Queens, NY. Acts mean, but isn't really.
very entertaining teacher with somewhat difficult exams - i would recommend him
No Comments
Annoyingly repetative about useless topics NA to the class. Unreasonable about exams (didn't use complete sentences on an exam so got 60% of it wrong) NO partial credit (except 1 essay Q, 40% of exam) and some questions are actually 3 questions in 1.
I love this man. LOVE. I learn a tremendous amount and remain constantly entertained during lectures (and am still challenged).
Never miss a class. Never ask a question. Never get noticed (or he'll harass you). But - you'll never have to read either if you can take good notes and hi-lite your book.
Talks about the Who and killing people. What a great teacher
He grades papers hard, and is way too picky on exams (they're hard), but he is an excellent lecturer. If you are willing to do the reading and want to enjoy learning about literature again, I highly recommend this teacher.
Dr. Burduck is wonderful and the graduate students love him very much.
hard but good. Just go to class and underline and write everything he tell you to.
His class is a little challenging but lots of fun. He is a very entertaining man who loves weird literature like Poe for example. One of my favorite english professors.
This was the most interesting Eng. Prof EVER! He is hilarious! HARD TESTS, if you are good at reading one sentance from a story and naming the title and author, without having a list of them to choose from you'll make an A. You have to KNOW the stories.
Dr. Burduck is an excellent professor, whose lectures are far from boring. His comedy aside, his lectures are tremendous. His comedy is good too, and his classes are guaranteed to resound with laughter.
He repeats himself. He's a great guy. He repeats himself. He cusses out the chalk. He tells jokes. He repeats himself. But if you ask questions, he insults you. In his own words, his class is "not for the thin-skinned." But you get to laugh at
Not a bad teacher, but I would like to reiterate the "REPEATS HIMSELF" of another comment. He CAN be funny, but sometimes he tosses out more corny jokes than you can handle. Just highlight everything he reads out loud, take good notes, and you
Very hard. Easy to see as not very nice if you've grown up in the south. Actually, he's just not that outgoing. You'll learn alot if you apply yourself. I have gotten As from him and Fs from him based on how I applied myself to the given course.
Very cool teacher, funny as hell. Goto the lectures and take notes and you'll pass with a C. Read the homework and I'm sure you will do great, I just needed a C though. He teaches a gothic literature class thinking of taking.
Bottom Line: Go to lectures and take notes, his comedy keeps it interesting. His tests have short answer that are very picky so required to go to class.
He does not care if you pass or fail. He uses bad language all through the semester and in his lectures. I did well in his class, but with no thanks to him. I WOULD NOT take him again.
He keeps things interesting. If I had to take any class for 3 hours straight I would take it from him because he keeps you awake. His tests are terrible though if you do no study. He doesnt take role but you MUST go to class if you want to stay awake
Dr. Burduck has a cutting wit, and references The Three Stooges and Monty Python's Holy Grail prolifically. He is a very adept teacher and his humor keeps it lively, however, his grading criteria is harsh, especially on term papers.
her likes to hear himself talk, however his lecture is full of energy! i got an A, but i had to work hard for it. his term paper was very harsh. if you show improvement, he will help out your grade a tiny bit.
Horrible class, It did not matter how much you new about the readings, the tests were impossible.
Dr. Burduck is actually not that hard. If you come to class and take notes, you can pass with at least a C. He reads lines from the works. If you can recognize the lines and know their meanings, you can easily pass his tests.
i love his class! he always keeps it interesting and can always make me laugh. he knows so much about the material as well. you HAVE to go to class and apply yourself. if you read, take notes, and study, you'll do fine on the tests. i would take him again
Burduck taught me a heck of a lot during a period of my life when I wasn't sure whether I was capable of doing the work or not. I learned more in a few weeks of one summer than I expected - a good thing.
He was very interesting to listen to, REALLY funny! Easy to understand, but hard to figure out for tests. You have to study hard for the 3 tests, cause those are your only grades, but they're not that bad. Listen in class and you'll have a C.
Great Teacher. Dont let him full you, he tries to intimidate how mean he is first couple of weeks. But he is a great teacher and helps you out at end of semester. Study the notes, and you will do fine.
His classes are interesting the readings are lite. But the Tests are the Hardest things in the world to take. They are impossible to pass.
He's a really funny guy. . . not that bad. If I have to go to class, at least his lectures are entertaining- sometimes as if it's a show! I would recommend him!!! He loves the three stooges, especially Moe for some reason{???)
He's my favorite English professor at Tech, and I'm an English major. Burduck's a genius, his lectures are easy to follow, and he always slows down and repeats himself at the important parts. His tests can be difficult if you don't study a few hours for them, but I'd reccommend taking his class.
Great teacher! Explains things on a level that can be easily understood. Very helpful. Funny. Nice.
He's not as mean as he says he is. Lectures are entertaining, sort of, and if it can be done, makes American Literature "fun." Tests are all essay and identification, not easy, but VERY pass-able. You MUST go to every class to pass them though. Readings are reasonable. Nothing unexpeted on tests.
the mans a jerk, easy class but test are hard, would find someone else to take,
Likes to listen to himself talk. Tests are very hard. Advise you to take someone else for this class.
Failed me, ate a jug of mayo, and is probably the 'weird uncle' at family reunions. Loves the subject, but didn't appreciate contradicting opinions...esp. if unfounded (my specialty). Requires a lot of reading, don't rely on the Salem's Lot movie.
Great teacher, makes class interesting. His tests aren't that hard as long as you study and explain things well
I hate Lit. His class was almost enjoyable. He gets off on tangents roughly 40% of the time, but it's way more interesting than lit. He is funny, the class isn't an easy A, but an A is very possible. He teaches well when he is teaching. Tests are essay/identification, but he grades them leniently.
I love him.
It seems that he really does not care if you learn anything in his class. He talks down to the students. He makes fun people from the south and the way he says they talk. At least half of the class time he spends talking about his life, the three stooges, chain saws, stupid movies and his band.
I enjoyed both of the classes that I took with him. He does go off on tangents a lot, but that's what keeps it interesting. His tests aren't that hard if you pay attention in class. Take him if you like to be entertained in class and don't mind being picked on a little bit from time to time.
Very interesting, super funny.
halarious
He's great. He's not easy, but it's very worth it. I reccommend Dr. Burduck to everybody.
Demanding, but fun. Burduck is great!
Not easy at all, but his excitement about the subject makes me want to learn. He's really funny, too. Is he really in a band?
Knows his stuff, comunicates clearly, grades fairly....the only problems I had were his incessant re-telling of the same jokes, his picking on certain people (not me), and his clear dislike of students.
Very interesting professor. Good honest test, except for the final, HOWEVER, he is a fair grader and the final may or may not affect or show the students overall quality and he grades on the quality of the student overall. His classes are interesting and did not want to miss any of them because of the "cool" information he gave...but NEVER BE LATE!

Very interesting and funny guy! Take lots of notes and you'll do fine. I found it very effective to highlight and write in the margins of the book when he's reviewing and explaining a passage. He's very kind with grades - if you show significant improvement and effort he will certainly take that into account! Highly Reccommend!
Dr. Burduck is awesome. You come in and he puts on this tough front to make you think you'll totally flunk the course, but if you listen and take good notes, an A is very very possible. About 35-40% of the time is him telling stories about his childhood or the Three Stooges. Super fun class. Definitely recommend.
Some people might like to kill him til he's day-ed. I was so disgusted the first day, thought I was gonna hate him. But he turned out to be a wonderful lecturer and full of entertaining stories.
good teacher, fun class.
He will scare the crap out of you to try and make you think you are going to fail his class! Take lots of notes and hilight all the quotes out of the book. If you get into trouble just go talk to him in his office! He's very easy to work with as long as you let him know you are trying! I would definately take his class again!
This guy is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's passionate, intense, fun and intelligent. Easy on the eyes, too.
Great professor. Easy class. Buy a used book from around campus and your work is mostly done. Don't read the stories, just look over the highlighted lines before test. Also, make sure to take good notes over the stuff that is not in the book. Easy B class. An A is very managable as well.
HATED this class... he was rude and made retarded jokes... I did not find him amusing in the least bit. Just old and very crude!
For a 3 hr class, I have to say it was actually quite interesting, but I'm a big fan of american lit anyways. Burduck is entertaining & seems to be passionate about what he teaches. Exams are all essay. He gives you partial credit for the essay & expects perfection on IDs, but they arent that bad! Go to class, bring book, take notes. easy A!
always love to have a prof that so obviously loves the subject! Took a while to get used to him, but loved the class in the end. Show up, read the stories, listen and you will do just fine!
I thought I wouldn't like this class, but it turned out to be quite fun. Pay attention in class and don't come in late! His tests are tough but fair.
This guy will make you think that you'll fail the course from day one. Not so. I got a 62 on my first test and ended up with an A in the class. He's definitely lenient at the end of the course. Just buy a used book and memorize the highlighted sections. Ah, dont you dare to be late!
This guy has office hours only by appointment, but does not respond to emails to set up appointments. Each test is 33% of your grade. The tests consist of 10 questions and 1 essay. Vulgar man with an attitude to match. Most of the "wannabe intellectuals" adore him but he's insufferable in my opinion.
Do not take Dr.Burduck!! There is only 3 tests but he makes the last one so hard it is impossible to make a good grade on it. And it doesnt help if you didnt do so good on the other two. I thought it would be ok to take the class b/c it rated him as an ok teacher to take. But I was so wrong. Just whatever you do dont take him!
Not an easy A as others have said. He is extremely picky on the ID's on exams. If you can remember where characters come from, or lines from a work come from. You may be able to make it. But, remembering where a quote come from out of like 500 pages, with lots of authors isn't easy. I don't recommend him. Good Luck if you take him.
The other people in my class went on and on about how hard the first test was- I was late and missed it. But I studied the notes and listened in class and knew everything on the 2nd. I don't know my grade yet- but he's funny as(you know). The only down side is the class is 3 hours on Wed evening. Don't be late!
So, like i was saying. This guy won't help you out at all, especially during an exam. And you better have some balls if you got a question. Oh, and I hope you have a photographic memory if you wanna take the class! One of the IDs on the final was, "I stand here waiting for you." and it was comprehensive. Don't take it. It'll suck. Warned you.
He is a wonderful Teacher
Fairly easy class if you go to class and highlight the quotes he goes over. Know those and the important things in the notes and you should be fine...Really not that bad at all if you go to class.
Burduck is a complete jerk, but he knows his material. Just don't expect to get any help or clarification on anything pertaining to the course. At least his lecture is not awful.
Entertaining in class, but his tests are tough. He won't let you come in late.
I love this guy! He is hilarious. Also, he is the scariest teacher I've ever had but it keeps me awake. I never get bored in his class. Make sure your phone is off and don't bring in food or drink, and don't even try to come in late! This is the most entertaining teacher I have. He keeps me laughing through the whole class. He's mean but funny!
Wonderful. He is extremely interesting and knows his content area. Tests are complicated but if you study you will do well. Does hilarious impressions of Hitler, 3 Stooges and students if you're lucky. He may seem "insufferable" but he's a very down to earth guy.
After I signed up for this course I heard from a friend that I would'nt like it, but he was wrong. I learned alot and dont really care about English. Burduck is funny and he knows the material inside and out. His stories make the material seem real. Dont come in late or leave your cell phone on. I'm going to take his Gothic lit course.
Dr.Burduck is a great professor. He teaches everything in a way that helps you understand it very well. NEVER miss class(he gives a lot of notes) and NEVER EVER try to come in late. His tests are fair, but you have to know A LOT of information. His essay is extremely picky-no "to be" verbs or youre screwed. Overall, he's worth taking you will learn
DO NOT do well on the first two tests (out of 3) he curves the grade if you show "significant" improvement BUT if you make As on the first 2 tests and barely miss the A on the final, you get a B... It's not fair and stupid. Plus unless you like the 3 Stooges you really don't learn too much
I wouldn't say he's JC but hes a great teacher.
His story concerning his dad, WWII, and the American Crisis was amazing. Made me almost cry. He is so emmotional about things. Great
He passionately loves the stuff he teaches. I'm not an English major, but I will take more classes with this prof.
I took him for Gothic literature. It was, by far, the most demanding class I've ever taken. He demands a lot of reading, and attendance is absolutely imperative. His lectures are always, always interesting, and he's a very nice (though highly intimidating) professor. His tests are quite difficult, but my grade was reflective of the work I put forth
I dont like English,I came to class,I read the works, I took notes,I got an A. A good teacher.
Dr. Burduck is an excellent professor with a vast knowledge of American and European history. He is an asset to TN Technological University and is funny as hell. Do your reading assignments, take notes, you will get an A. He is a great professor and I recommend him.
A great professor!!
His lectures are extremely entertaining, but I wouldn't take his class if you don't have a good sense of humor as his jokes are often offensive. If you go to class and read everything, you'll do fine. He won't spoon-feed you the material so make sure you try to understand it. Make sure you show up the first day so you know all of his rules, too.
One of the best at TTU. He's funny as anything.
The professor had very high expectations, and I disagreed with how unapproachable he seemed in class and his sarcastic comments. Dr. Burduck's lectures were very interesting and clear, however, and he gives a very light reading list. Take detailed notes- including EVERYTHING he writes on the board- and study hard for the two tests.
A typical New Yorker, this prof is a laugh a minute. Dont forget to take good notes and always arrive on time. Tests can be a bit picky but he gives fair ones. Get ready to laugh a lot.
He seems abrasive at first but if you put forth a (real) effort he's really helpful if you have questions. Highlight what he reads in class and study only that for exams. Wants YOUR opinions in the research paper, not statements or conclusions of the research. If you make a C on the first exam & an A on the final, you get the A. Don't stress!
Great class from a great teacher. Only a jerk would call him a jerk as he's one of the best profs here at Tech. Come to class and pay attention for a good grade. Will he become DICtator?
This man is probably one of the most interesting professors i've ever had at Tenn Tech. He loves to go off on rants during class, write down everything he says in class and study about 4 days before the test or you will fail. Make sure you pass the final or its automatic fail.
Hes a professor and a comedian rolled into one. He gets picky on his exams so its best to come to class and pay attention. He wont let you in late so be on time too. I enjoyed the class and his stories.
He is an awful professor when it comes to giving test! He doesn't give ANY partial credit you have 3 grades the entire semester. The test were 10 identifications worth 6 points a piece and an essay on the authors worth 60 points. He spends 3/4 of the class talking about unrelated subject. HARD TEACHER TO TAKE unless you already know your stuff!
I found his tests rather picky but I did good on them. He's got some great stories and he makes coming to class fun. Take good notes. And don't come in late.
A laugh a minute. You either love him or hate him. Im glad I took the class.
He takes three grades the entire semester; a midterm, paper, and a final. His paper is easy but good luck on his midterm and cumulative final. He asks for the most obscure stuff on his tests. If you think it is important, don't bother studying it, he only puts things he doesn't go over on his tests. My worst experience at tech.
If you pay attention in class and read the material you should do OK (as I did). Easier than I had heard, in fact. He knows his subject well and that made me want to read the lit. Loves to tell jokes and stories, too. I will take him again for another class.
Makes you really study for tests. Picky questions. Does like telling a good joke. Makes the material bearable.
READ THE STORIES he assigns. If you don't go to class or read the stories, don't plan on getting an A. It takes a lot of hard work but its possible to do well. Funny guy, makes the class go by pretty quickly with the jokes and stuff. Oh, and don't show up late OR have your cell phone out period. (not even on vibrate) you'll regret it :)
Don't take this class if you value your time and money.
I have nothing good to say about him.
My favorite professor. He loves his subject and his lectures are informative and entertaining. His tests can be difficult but his classes are worth it. I took his Am. lit. Poe and Gothic classes. I would definitely take another.
A really entertaining and knowledgable instructor.
He is a good teacher, but he is also very intimidating. His lectures are interesting, but his tests are very hard. Go to class, study, read the book, and take good notes.
Fun guy. He teaches the information very well, and the lectures are filled with jokes and stories to liven up the class. The test are brutal, however. They ask very few but specific questions over a wide range of covered material, so a fair amount of studying must be done to even pass the test with D minus.
Burduck is a quandary. Loved his teaching style but I also found myself hating it at times. Just make absolutely sure you go to class and take notes on everything. Material is not hard but his expectations are high. Quite the jokester. Enjoy the class but be wary, he is particular. Very very particular. You'll get little charity in his class.
Let me begin by saying I am an A sometimes B student. I got a C in this class (my first EVER,) and was LUCKY to get it. Very obscure questions. I would not take him again under ANY conditions. He was a good professor but his 3 exams were insane. 1 (40 point) essay. 10 (6 point) identifiers (quotes, terms, etc.) Cumulative final. Avoid at all costs!
This is the worst teacher I have ever had. He cussed me out and embarassed me in front of the entire class. He is sarcastic and rude, and I do not advise ANYONE to take his classes.
He's irreverent, funny, super smart. Not for the weak of heart. You better study, but you will learn tons!
Dr. Burduck is a fun lecturer and attending class is actually enjoyable. His tests are exceptionally difficult though. The background lecture is the most important material for his ID. Only take Burduck if you are willing to lose a few days studying for his final exam.
Pointless rambling about his life history in class. Apparently does not care if people sleep during class, but WW3 will happen if you're texting in class. Tests are very hard, he uses a lot of seemingly unimportant facts and random quotes from the stories and poems.
The bad comments here are not consistent with my experience in his class. He knows his stuff, is funny, expects you to show up on time, will murder you if you text oreave your phone on in clss, and gives tough tests. His direct New York personality might turn off some, but I enjoyed his class. He seems to love what he does.
This guy is insane. How are you supposed to lecture classes in liberal arts and you suffer from many emotional constructs. All his psychological constructs are hindrances in the students timeline in progressing forward. I do not recommend as I am now a PHD.
Dr. Burduck was an excellent professor. His class was long but he kept you entertained with his anecdotes. It's imperative you go to this class and are on time! If not I don't see how anyone could do well. As long as you pay attention, take notes, and review the given stories/poems you are fine. I made an A so can you. Study. Hint: Flashcards!!
Highly recommend this professor. Easy going and fun. No partial credits but appreciate high performance work. So work hard, he will give u good grade.
If you come to class you should do well. His sense of humor is refreshing. Knows quite a bit about am lit. And dont come in late. I will try to take him again.
He is very straightforward and the tests consist of 10 short answer(names of characters, lines from readings, or termonlogy) and one essay. It is a very thorough class because of how much he reads and how much background info he gives on authors, etc. Underline every line he reads out loud because those are the ones that'll be on the test.
Underline every quote or line he goes over. Book is mandatory. Attendance the first day of class is mandatory but after that you do not have to come, but if you don't, you will not do well on the exams. There are 2 exams and 1 final. The first part is identification so if you read over notes and underlined quotes you'll do fine.
Dr. Burduck was easily the best literature professor I took during my time as an undergraduate. He is truly outstanding, and if you want to learn about the material, engage in critical theory, and outline the intersections of literature and history, he's your guy. He is a strong asset to TTU.
Good teacher, made an A for the summer class in June 2015. Lectures the full time & covers a lot of material. You need to memorize everything & he doesn't go over tests so if you need help make sure you ask. You NEED the book for else you won't be allowed in class. He also requires you to have the actual book no ebooks!!!
I took him for American Lit in June. I am not that it too literature, but he really go me into it. As long as you pay attention during lecture, take notes, and read the assignments you will do fine. Only 3 tests with ID questions and an essay question, but as long as you pay attention during lecture you should be fine.
Dr. Burduck is amazing. Yes, he is abrasive and intimidating. At the same time, he is so passionate about literature and its affects on human history and emotion. He draws you in and makes you love the literature as much as he does. 3 hour lectures felt like 45 minutes. Go to class, take precise notes (write everything!!), and study for the tests.
The worst teacher I have ever had, am a sophomore and have a 4.0 and had to drop this class. He will not respond to calls or emails, his tests are graded subjectively. He just gave me a D on the first test and I did way better than students who received high B's. 3 tests for 100% of the grade. DO NOT TAKE. IF HE IS ON YOUR SCHEDULE TRANSFER CLASSES
He is a very tough grader and does not excuse much, but his lectures are amazing! The down side is there are only 3 grades you get (2 tests, 1 paper), but if you study and take notes on EVERYTHING you will do good. His lectures are very interesting and made me love literature even more! Do not miss his class! Do not forget book ever!
Dr. Burduck is very tough but fair. He doesn't grade based on emotion. Even if he hates you, it's still possible to get a good grade. I took his class during the summer so if you missed class you were in trouble even though attendance wasn't mandatory. THE TEXTBOOK IS MANDATORY. He won't let you in the class after the 2nd day if you don't have it.
Dr. Burdock was a good professor but LOVES to lecture. Don't expect to get out even a minute early. I took him over the summer so the class was fast paced. If you didn't come to class you missed A LOT of info. If you don't study all of the info very diligently you won't pass. His test are 6 I.D.s and 1 essay. Only grades were the 3 tests.
He is so passionate about literature. When he discussed the works that we had to read, he would explain it in such a way that would leave you saying "huh, I didn't think of it that way." He grades fair, but you have to pay attention and study. He only has 3 tests, but as long as you show improvement, he will give you a fair final grade.
He's a great professor, but he is definitely tough and makes you work for your grade. He may come off as rude and tough, but as long as you always show up and take notes from his lectures, you'll easily pass. Plus he takes into account your improvement over the semester and includes that in your final grade. Also, always bring your book.
Burduck is an amazing lecturer. I would highly recommend taking his class. The exams are tough, but this class is worth it. You learn a lot of information, but he really teaches well.
I loved having Dr. Burduck! Every time I left his class, I actually felt inspired and excited about literature. I would highly recommend taking his class. He seems very intimidating at first, but is very kind if you'll just do what is expected of you. Show up and study! It's tough, but totally worth it. I walked away loving literature even more.
Once you get past his "tough-guy" bravado, you'll see he is actually very cool. You can tell he is very passionate about literature. His lectures are long and often go on tangents. Pay attention to those tangents; they might be on the test. He often jokes about himself and his students, very tastefully, and it makes the classroom very inviting.
Burduck is a great professor and is defiantly passionate about what he teaches about. But if you are taking this just to get the credit i would suggest taking a different teacher. His tests are difficult and you inly have three. But he believes in redemption of your grade. Defiantly need your book, if you don't have it dont bother going to class
Burduck is the best professor in the English department, with interesting lectures and serious knowledge of literature. You have to really study hard (take in depth notes on EVERYTHING he says) for his exams, but they areby no means impossible to pass. If you show improvement on each assignment, he will bump up your final grade just based on that.
Two tests and a final are your only grade. He's very strict, but very lenient if you put forth effort. If you're a bare-minimum student, I wouldn't recommend him. He is super passionate about Literature though, almost made our night class fun.
I'm just going to tell you what you need to know for his final paper. 1. Do not print on both sides of the page. I did this the previous semester and was fine, but not this semester. 2. No "to be" verbs. Very crucial. 3. Do not staple the pages. Use a paper clip. 4. Turn it in with a manila folder. Other than that, this class is good. He is funny.
He grades 3 things: 2 tests & an essay. There are no quizzes. Be prepared to write down every word that comes out of his mouth, it could be on a test. He will make you uncomfortable on purpose & make fun of students. If you are a minute late, dont bother showing up. He has odd requirements for essays, cant use the word is. He lectures every day
Show up to class, pay attention, and bring your book and you'll be fine. The best professor I've ever had.
Dr. Burduck is the best professor in the English department. Show up to class or you will be lost on the exam. However, if you pay attention, exams are easy and he's lenient. He will repeat important phrases so you can write them down word for word. These phrases are usually on the exams. He's from NY so he's rough but hilarious. Awesome guy.
Dr. Burduck' s American Lit class was one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. That being said, you still have to work. His class is only in person once a week, so it is crucial to take notes and show up! The course depends on only three test grades that are written response and essay prompted. No quizzes. Textbook needed.
Dr. Burduck is really funny and his lectures are really interesting. You definitely need the book, if you dont have it, he will ask you to leave. Theres only 3 exams and thats your whole grade. You will do good as long as you show up, take notes, and study. Hes really nice and a really good teacher. I definitely recommend taking him.
If you take this class, you must read the readings. You only have three exams with ten questions identifying authors, characters from the readings, lines from the readings, and phrases from lectures. These questions are 6 points each, so if you miss 4 questions you already made a 76. The other 40 points are from an essay question. No food/drink.
This professor is t
This professor is totally insane. Your grade is based completely off of three exams. The exams have 10 questions which equal 60pts, and an essay worth 40pts. There is an unreasonable amount of information to remember for the exams. You have to read poems and stories from the 1600s that make no sense. What he discusses in lectures is on the tests.
