you will not have enough time to finish your test. Do not rely on curve. you think you learned everything but once you see the test...
I don't know what to make of this guy exactly... First exam was easy and long, 2nd exam was shorter but had a bunch of reject calculations that no TA nor himself ever mentioned when reviewing. He is a very nice guy, though and means well. He could at LEAST curve the average a little higher than just a 78%...So far, 40F's,70 D's, 110 C's as a result
"Dont judge a book by its cover," He looks nice, but thats a "HELL" no. Sure his a smart guy, but he doesn't like teaching, infact his not even good at it. Give him a lab at ucsd, and hire a prof who wants to TEACH! uhggg
His tests are terrible with a good amount of typos and bad wording. He says at the beginning that class is optional and that he will post everything online but then he gives out a bunch of handouts and shows a movie without including any of them online. Don't waste your time with him.
The previous poster must be failing the class. The handouts are clearly on webct. He posts literally the course on webct for that matter. He is a really nice guy, gives pretty tough tests that require you to know alot, and know it well. Exams are pretty much regurgitation of processes.
don't complain about failing if you didnt attend his lectures. he tells you exactly what you to know. this is an easy class, and if you cant pull off genetics with a good teacher like prof burg then you shouldnt be majoring in bio
2 Midterms + 1 Final, offered 15 pt of EC. The 2 midterms were incredibly long, but doable if you attend lecture and study his study questions/handouts/ppt thoroughly. On the flip side, his final was all MC, short, and generally easy. Good professor, hard to keep up with what he's lecturing about though.
He does give you all you info you need to know in the class andis friendly, but he had timed tests. If you can't complete the tests within the required time...try harder. I'm someone who needs a lot of time to go over the questions carefully, if I'm rushed, then I panic haha. I didn't do well in the class, but I could have tried harder.
Professor Burg has been one of my favorite professors thus far. He is very kind, and extraordinarily helpful (he helped me on a Saturday once for 4 extra hours). The class was very interesting, and he was very clear. Tests are hard to get used to, though. Content is average, but it is incredibly time-limited!! Work ALL THE RECOMMENDED CH. PROBLEMS!
ok i was struggling quite a bit in this class but not because he's a bad teacher or his tests are unreasonable, I just totally underestimated this class. it's a lot of work, a lot of memorization. His tests are long and you need to do ALL the math hw prob in order to retain the material
Take this professor as a last resort. His midterms are unrepresentative of his lectures mainly because he gets so excited that he can't cover all the material. They're long and difficult, so you have to memorize his notes inside out. He talks too fast and uses too many diagrams so its hard to take notes by hand OR computer.
he's a nice guy but not worth taking... his exams are very long and very difficult.. he teaches bild2 at the level of mamm. physiology... how do i know? HE USES THE MAM PHYS BOOK as a basis for his lectures. his tests cover more than his lectures do. he talks &flips through slides way too fast... bild shouldnt be this hard...
Believe me, i've taken several genetics class before but Burg's exams are just plain RIDICULOUS!!! I barely had enough time to read all the questions, yet alone answer them all! This guy needs to go back teaching community college.
I took BICD 100 with this guy, and now I'm taking BILD 2 with him. The key here is to be FULLY PREPARED when taking his midterms. They take a lot of time, yes, but if you have a grasp on the material, then you shouldn't spend several minutes on one problem. He provides study guides and does an excellent review session where he goes over everything.
Prof Burg has interesting lectures, he's very enthusiastic, and provides a lot of helpful hand-outs. But it sucks that he doesn't use the textbook at all, because I never know what to do for hw. Last quarter I read every chapter in Campbell & Reece and got an A. I'm still reading every chapter, but this quarter, I'll be lucky to get a B-.
I don't understand some of these comments...I took his genetics class last quarter and it was pretty easy, especially if you study. He also gave 15 points of extra credit for basically nothing, and he gives +s, but not -s, which is very helpful. Also, I was able to finish every one of his tests early.
I really like Burg. He is very enthusiastic and makes you want to come to class! He makes me actually want to learn about biology and he shows fun videos. I would definitely take him again. I just wish he would make his tests easier, but if you really understand the handouts he gives you, you'd be set because he specifically tells you what to know
I cannot believe people think his BILD 2 class is difficult. The tests are so straight forward and the curve is VERY generous. He averages the exams and makes that a B-. All you have to do are know his lecture notes and study guides really well and it would be pretty hard not to get an A with a 9 or 12 point curve added to each exam.
I really liked this professor! He is passionate about biology, esp the kidney. People complain that he is a tough prof, but if you read over his lecture slides and do the study questions, you'll be set! Plus he doesn't give any -'s! Plus he adds around 8-10 pts (midterms atleast) to your raw score=curve which is great too. TAs were helpful too.
Definitely one of the easier BILD 2 professors. He lectures fast and zooms through concepts, so you have to be paying attention. 0% of the material is from the textbook, but 100% of the material is from his lecture slides/handouts. Which is fine, because he provides study guides for you anyway.
I really enjoyed this class. His lectures were very clear and to the point. However, his exams are a different story. His exams are time-based which means he'll throw a ton of easy/medium difficulty questions at you in a given time limit. If you are not good under pressure, then this professor is not for you. I actually found it challenging and fun
Took him last quarter. He talks really fast and it's hard to keep up with him but he is always entertaining. Read the book and GO to the review. I got an A with the curve even though I skipped a few classes, never looked at the handouts, and never went to discussion.
Drop before it's late. Hard tests not enough time. Stupid curve. Test is based on the stuff that was not covered in class. Nice guy though
Challenging exams but generous curving. He is very nice.
I did all the reading for this class, (which you should not do- it's irrelevant!), went to all the lectures, and his office hours, and I still got a C! He lectures WAY too fast, so I couldn't really absorb the material. He also doesn't use a textbook, which sucks.
Prof. Burg is a great professor. His exams are tough but if you study for them you should do well as he covers all the material he puts in his exams and is more than happy to go over whatever material you don't understand. Nice man, good professor, highly recommend him.
its me again. So Prof burg teaches us upper division material and tells us we should take BIMM 100 next quarter. LET ME JUST ENLIGHTEN YOU, THAT BIMM 100 HAS PREREQUISITES WHOSE PREREQUISITES ARE BILD 1. THIS MAN IS VERY VERY VERY NICE. EXTREMELY NICE THAT THIS ALL JUST DOES NOT MAKE SENSE. HE IS EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT AND FUNNY THO SO ITS CHILL!!!
Dr. Michael Burg is great! I attended ALL of his 8 am classes and I live off campus!!! Great lecturer! Two thumbs up!
He's a funny and easy teacher. In lecture, he writes down everything you need to know for the test on the board with diagrams and example problems. He is very nice and willing to answer questions. I recommend him!
Dr. Burg is an excellent professor and a really kind man. He is highly intelligent and expects a great deal out of his students. His 8 am lectures are entertaining...I have never skipped his class and if you do skip class, you probably wont pass because he tends to go over everything that will be on the test during class. Would take again!!!!!!!!!!
Mike is probably my favorite professor here so far. He kept 8AM lectures entertaining and was very straightforward about what he wants you to get out of the course. Going to class is essential because he only tests on material from lecture, no books necessary. Overall great guy and I'd love to take him again.
This is a difficult course but he does a great job explaining everything and keeping the material interesting. He has research experience in cancer, and it is his passion, so you'll learn a lot about it. There were 2 midterms, a minigrant 4 pg paper, and the final. Going to discussion is highly recommend to do well in the class. Overall great prof
Doesn't overwhelms you if you aren't a Biomajor
The easiest bio class I ever took in my life. Great teacher who teachers very well and lets you know what exactly you need to know for the test. He uploads "practice tests" online that you can take and they are basically the exact same questions as the actual tests. He shows a lot of videos in class and often lets the class out 30 minutes early.
I love his humor, and his voice is audible and catching. Also, he is so good at explaining and, especially, at simplifying; he is not afraid to use the colloquialism. The first two chapters consist quite a few videos, and the tests have the most basic questions that check if you had watched. I learn that way, but I also heard complaints about that
Topics covered are engaging and prevalent; we went over the Human Genome Project, stem cell research, and cancer topics. Mike had the ability to keep the class engaged with a sense of humor. Overall easy class; just going to lecture should be more than enough to get an A. He doesn't give minus grades and the final was not cumulative.
Enthusiastic teacher, but unfortunately the grade in this class is based upon a student's performance in three areas: taking exams (critical thinking problems on the material are the norm), essay writing, and going to lecture/discussion. I wish it would have been modeled better, with some problem sets to defray the insane impact of the exams.
No need to buy textbooks. Materials are provided online and super ample for studying all the contents covered in the exams. He is humorous on the lecture and worked very hard as he persisted giving lectures even when some problems happened to his voice. I give him a thumb up. Good choice for GE requirement. A is super easy.
Amazing professor! He is very funny and focuses on topics that are actually interesting and useful! His lectures were interesting and very engaging because of his easy-going attitude and great sense of humor. They also ended early most of the time. He tells you EXACTLY what you need to know for tests during lectures, so make sure you attend.
He's very understanding of our situation as students- none of the tests were cumulative, and the course material was geared toward what he wanted us to get out of the class and apply to the rest of our lives. Lectures were kept interesting through his humor, and while he loves conspiracies, he also loves biology. I felt I learned a lot.
Straightforward tests. Whatever he covers during class is fair game for the test. Doesn't require textbook, which was nice. I haven't taken bio since freshman yr of high school, and managed to get an A. Other than tests, the written assignment wasn't too bad.
MICHAEL BURG IS AMAZING! I am planning all my classes just so I can take him again! He is such a great professor! By far, the best professor at UCSD. He makes everyone else look terrible in comparison! He is engaging, intellectual, thought-provoking, fair, and respectable! I love everything about this professor. He really cares and will help you!
The class goes through a lot of content so especially if you haven't taken AP Bio make sure to review material after every class. The professor's grading is very fair and tests aren't too hard. He even has a generous curve. Towards the end of the quarter there's a research paper to hand in about a disease of your choice. I enjoyed the class overall
Out of all the teachers I had at UCSD, this professor is by far the best I have had. If youre a visual learner and learn by looking at the board, I recommend him. He kept my attention with his enthusiasm for this subject. You learn about the cell (something I find so boring), and he taught it in a way that kept me interested.
Very great lecturer. Lectures are entertaining and present the materials quite well. Exams are fair. BIBC 103 has two really long papers that need quite a lot of time to finish. BICD 134 has a lot of material that needed to be memorized but the final is not cumulative. Will bump up your grades if you are at borderline, ex: 89 A. Don't give (-)s.
The greatest perspective of Professor Burg is that he has a really nice curve. 90% is a solid A, not even a minus. But for his lab classes, he has a few undergrad TAs who are not so proficient in teaching lab techniques and their communication skills need improvements. Also, be careful that scrupulous details are required in lab reports.
Professor Burg has a great sense of humor and a passion for all things biology. You will learn how to design your own experiments and investigate different hypotheses. Note of caution: TA's can vary in quality. Make sure that you ask your TA for their SPECIFIC grading criteria, otherwise you may be disappointed with how your lab reports are graded.
Very enthusiastic about what he teaches. No textbook needed/ no podcasts, so you need to go to his lectures. Everything he writes on the board/ discusses will be on the test. He usually reviews the last lecture before to know the most important topics. Always smiling/wants people participating. Would love to take his class again!
Awesome professor, awesome guy! He really really (really) cares about his students and gives every opportunity to do well in his class. Lectures are a bit confusing, but if you go over your notes and review the lecture slides, he explains concepts very well. Tests are very fair and are an accurate representation of what was learned in class.
Dr. Burg is a great professor and down-to-earth guy and I would recommend taking him! This course has been my favorite class I've taken and has made me truly enjoy bio. He can be all over the place when teaching, but he breaks up the material very clearly and makes lecture fun! There are no podcasts and 3 exams, lots of USEFUL EC, and no curve.
You can tell he's extremely passionate about what he teaches. He's really funny and chill, always looked forward to going to his class! He also doesn't require a textbook and you don't really have to go through the powerpoint slides, just pay attention in class & go over podcasts to do well! Really fair grader and the final wasn't cumulative.
Easy A if you understand what he says in lecture and writes on the chalkboard. I love his enthusiasm bc it made it easier to pay attention. No hw except a 5 page easy paper on a disease. also, HIS FINAL ISNT CUMULATIVE
Mike is insanely awesome. I enjoyed every minute of his lectures. His tests are very easy as long as you write down whats on the board. Go to his office hours and hell help you on every aspect youre confused on. His teaching style is different and makes you think in a different way which is what is so fascinating about his lectures.
Honestly, Mike Burg was one of the most fantastic teachers i've ever had on campus, and has inspired me to like biology even more.
I loved taking Mike's class! He simplified difficult concepts using plenty of practice and figures (great if you're a visual learner). He helps you understand the material rather than just memorize it. Tells you whats on exam so pay attention in lecture! EC + cool video assignments. I had so much fun with this class, thanks to his teaching style!
Mike is such a great professor! This class was very enjoyable with interesting lectures, easy to follow diagrams and great explanations. He gives great practice tests and reviews before the midterms! The tests were similar to practice exam and lecture examples. Super funny professor and I highly recommend taking him!!!
Burg is one of the best professors I've had here at UCSD. He's really enthusiastic about what he teaches and it really reflects as his lectures are super entertaining. The material is challenging and there is memorizing, but it is definitely possible to do well in his class. Take Burg for every bio class if possible! He's great!!!
Professor Burg has been hands down one of the best teachers I've had at UCSD. His class moves quickly(esp. after midterm 2) but he podcasts & his enthusiasm for the subject makes class enjoyable. He actually teaches you about the material so you learn about it, not just memorize it. I'm a bio major but have never enjoyed any BILD class before his.
Hilarious teacher. Provides practice tests that are similar to actual. Exams aren't too difficult. Podcasts. No clickers. Not much homework. Will be taking him for as many bio classes as possible.
Genuinely cares about student success. Great review sessions, video podcasts, no required textbooks. He tells you what you need to know and what is just fun information. He is the only professor that doesn't put me to sleep. I mostly watched his podcasts and still managed a B+ with minimal studying.
Love this dude! Class is content heavy but tells you whats important for tests. Podcasted but attendance is encouraged bc it helps grasp the subject. Lectures are interesting and he's passionate about it. He brought cookies to the final lecture! Offers EC if you go to discussion too. Def take him if he's teaching a class you need!
He is very funny, he always cant stop laughs at the jokes he made by himself, which is very funny to me and I feel funny is how he makes himself funny.A great teacher with newest materials and frontier research, it worths for you to take him
Mike is actually such a cool dude. He tells you the ups and downs of the course from the beginning. I got a B+ but only because I didn't go to lecture since Week 3. But I definitely recommend going to lecture and review sessions!
He does podcats, but he usually draws on the board which are hard to see through the podcast. He was a really good and solid professor and his tests are extremely fair. Would recommend.
A great professor who is extremely passionate about what he teaches! He is constantly looking up information on breakthroughs in bio and keeps his material up to date. His lectures are interesting as he writes stuff on the chalk board that will be on the test. He offers a good amount of extra credit too and doesn't fail to make the class laugh.
I took this class during the summer. Lecture is not mandatory but I would recommend attending because he tells you everything you need to know for the exam. He also makes great drawings/schemes on the board that help you understand the material. 1 midterm and 1 final - mostly MC and 2 short responses. Lots of extracredit. Also, he is funny!
Burg is such a fun dude, he really cares about what he teaches and keeps it interesting. all text were noncumulative and discussions were not mandatory but get extra credit for attendance. I had a great TA and it really helped me out. he doesn't do +/-
Burg cares about his students -- comes around during the lab period to facilitate conversations about our experiments to help us think about the theoretics behind the lab protocol. Super approachable professor, and extra credit CAPE opp (do it). Lab protocol is super easy, be prepared to run thru your experiments in detail so you don't have to redo
Burg was one of the easiest teachers. He is very passionate about teaching, but also podcasts so you don't have to attend class. Tests are like the practice test he gives and the questions are very straight forward. Everything you need to know is in the articles he assigns and his lectures, nothing else. Would 10/10 recommend
I really like this professor, he really cares about his students and his lectures, especially towards the end of quarter are interesting. If you want to succeed in his midterms and finals, get ready to read all of his assigned his readings and pay attention in class or rewatch the podcasts. There are easy writing assignments but tedious.
Burg is a great and funny professor! The class is really easy as long as you attend class or listen to his podcast because everything he says or writes will be on the test. The test isn't too hard if you put some effort to study. He assigns writing assignments that are time-consuming and little tedious but they aren't bad. Highly recommend him.
Absolutely Amazing! Mike is amazing, passionate and has a great sense of humor. His tests are straightforward. He doesn't throw curveballs. His finals are not cumulative and he gives you assignments that are only going to help your grade. Lecture attendance is not mandatory and you get extra credit to attend discussions. Definitely recommended!
Grades based on total points so exams not weighted. Extra credit for >80% cape and attending 5 discussions. Really entertaining and funny so the lectures did not feel dreadful at all. Tells you everything you need to know for exams in class & provides practice problems which most were actually on the exam or very similar! Podcasted+no txtbk needed
Professor Burg is one of the best professor that Ive ever had. His lectures are both interesting and informative. You can definitely learn a lot from the lectures and will enjoy the process of learning. Almost every question from the tests comes from the lectures. He is so nice about the grades that students from 90-98 can all get an A.
Professor Burg is one of the best professors I have ever had. His midterm and final are super fair. As long as you go to lecture and take notes, you will be completely fine for the exams. He does not take attendance but writes mainly on the board so attendance is recommended. He gives like 2/3 assignments but they are super interesting and easy.
He is the worst professor I have ever taken at UCSD. He is super disorganized and he does not know his material at all. All the students are confused in the lab. He leaves all the explanation to the TA and the TA does not explain anything. I am so upset about this class. Please do not listen to the good rate he has.
Great guy and fair professor. His version of bild 1 focuses on cancer more than others, which made it much more interesting. He is super passionate about what he lectures on and creates easy/fair tests. I got a B, but it was really just because I never went to class and had limited bio experience. If you go to 5 discussions you get extra credit too
I think BIMM 100 is molecular biology, but he makes it more cancer and disease class. He is really a great guy that been said if U don't have strong information about molecular biology, I don't really recommend him for you because he involved 60-70% just about cancer & diseases, but if you like to learn about cancer I definitely recommend him for U
Had him for BIMM101, decided to take him for a lecture-focused course and although he is a bit all over the place, section helps a ton to summarize the important points. Do his study guides for exams that he posts, they reflect exactly what he'll ask on exams. I would trust his study guides > review sessions, but the reviews are still good help!
I took Burg for BIMM 100 my second time around and he actually breaks down what we're talking about instead of assuming we know. Don't expect to learn if you just watch his podcasts because you wont be able to follow if you're not there. Overall great guy and taking his BIMM 134 Cancer class because of how passionate he is about this subject.
His class had no clickers and he didn't podcast at the time, but he basically gives you what you need to know for the exams. He is very straightforward and tells you what you need to know for the exam. Very funny and actually cares about his students!
prof burg is amazinggg. He's super chill and you can tell he enjoys teaching this course a lot cuz he LITERALLY gets excited about the material haha. You will need to study realy hard cuz he covers a lot in class (well, summer ses), but he's super straight-forward with the exam questions and you'll learn so much. Recommended!!
I've taken him for BILD 2 and he was/ is very entertaining and is VERY clear with what you need to know for the exams. He goes over concepts and topics repeatedly in lecture and it's very helpful to have it all laid out for you. A very caring professor that wants you to learn, as well as enjoy biology.
Here's what you need to pass: MEMORIZE and UNDERSTAND the cancer stuff. This molecular bio class revolves around cancer. His tests are easy if you memorize stuff. I took this class online during COVID-19. He gives you OPTIONAL homework problems, as well as fun assignments like writing papers. He's a great guy. He doesn't make you learn extra stuff.
Highly recommend Burg! His lectures have a lot of info. (esp. for summer session), but he's clear on what he wants us to know. Tests are fair and represent the material. Plenty of EC and assignments that are pretty much guaranteed pts. Discussion sections are useful to understand the content. One of the best professors I've taken so far!
You can really tell just how passionate Burg is about oncology. His class includes knowing the detailed molecular pathways/causes of cancer. If you can understand the mechanisms, you're golden. One curved midterm, a few easy assignments, extra credit, and the final were the components of our grade. I'd take this class again in a heartbeat.
What can I say about this class? Couple assignments that aren't graded harshly, a curved midterm, and a final. The entire course is straight memorization, you either know it or you don't - simple as that. Overall, easy workload, and would take Burg again if he's offered for my upcoming classes.
He was ight. Good guy and all, but the class is straight memorization off lectures. Some of the questions on his tests were Ph.D level. Overall, not that difficult, very little homework, and fairly easy to grab an A or a B in the class. The lectures are the only annoying part since so much info is crammed into them. I'd recommend taking him, though
Great professor! You can tell he is really passionate about the subject which I appreciate. The class is not too difficult, but you'll also need to make sure you understand what he goes over in lecture. Overall, a really nice guy!
Second time taking a course with Professor Burg. Not as engaging as before since the course is completely remote. The content is comprehensible. A few writing assignments that easily doable but be aware of the readings. Exams are fair and are straightforward from Burg's lectures. This is class is manageable to earn an A.
The class material itself (BILD 1 and BILD 2) aren't hard, but you definitely still need to pay attention and watch lectures to get an A in the class. He doesn't do traditional powerpoint lectures but instead writes everything out on a board so you need to follow along to understand because just looking at the board will make no sense.
Prof. Burg is a good professor and he cares about cancer A LOT, which is amazing. But theres a myth that this class is a relatively easy bio class, which is not true AT ALL. This class is harder than metabolic biochem, genetics, and molecular biology COMBINED. Theres only 1 midterm and 1 final. If you mess one up, you could never bounce back GL!
BILD 32**Burg is funny & a good teacher. Go to class! What he covers in class is exactly what is on his tests. Grade is only dependent on 2 midterms, 1 final, and about 5 assignments, and your lowest test or assignment grade will not get dropped. The assignments r long so give urself time to complete them & the tests require a lot of memorization
Professor Burg is a perfect man. I took his cancer biology class to fulfill my general education. I didn't actually do well on tests because I am bad at biology, so I took his course as a PNP option. He cares for students a lot and always answer questions, and he is really enthusiastic of what he teaches.
He is really really enthusiastic when it comes to anything about cancer. Homeworks are boring. Tests are relatively easy. The final was all multiple choice, and the two midterms had some essay questions. The exams are just based on what he talks about in class, not the slides. So, go to class if you want to do well :)
The class is def difficult but I really liked it. Burg is a really enthusiastic prof, but just fyi he sucks at responding to emails. His exams are really dense but also no surprises
Dr. Burg teaches ok, but he is very hard to reach outside the class. Two research papers were required for the course, and they were graded based on everyone's performance. Tough grading on research paper, the TA graded me paper gave nonsense comments, and Dr. Burg refused to read my paper to double check because he said he believed his TA.
He has been my favorite professor from my first year at ucsd. He is so passionate and makes the class very fun!
Overall he is a great person but the material that he tests us on is just not what you expect before going to the test. He will challenge your brain way too harder than you think. If you have other option definitely go with that, but keep this professor as last resort.
He states that whatever he writes on the board will be on the final yet the entire final was a mess. The final is worth almost half of your grade. He gave 25 points ec however that will NOT save your GPA. Honestly he had the worst and most confusing lecture style I have ever witnessed. If you do take him make sure he's your last report.
Professor Burg genuinely loved to teach molecular bio! He definitely has his own teaching style which can be confusing since he likes to write points on the board and goes out of order on lecture slides but if you review slides before class it'll be easier. Tests are hard but he wanted a majority of students to pass so gave a very generous curve.
This is the third time I've taken a course with Dr. Burg. Although his lectures are a bit unorganized, study everything he writes on the board as those are guaranteed materials for his exams. His exams are fair, and the final is non-cumulative. There are a couple of writing assignments, but nothing too challenging. Attend office hours!
Professor Burg is a kind professor. Make sure you put work into his class and think critically about his exams and you'll do well. He also has a very nice curve! Study his slides and what he writes on the board.
The lectures were extremely unorganized and hard to understand. The midterm was okay but the final was terrible. Don't even get me started on the writing assignments, which had the most unclear grading criteria ever. If you go to your TA's OH, you can do well on those though. He is kind though, gave extensions and curved on the exams.
His lectures are awesome because he constantly updates the curriculum with the newest discoveries. He shares real world applications to the things we learn and makes things really interesting to learn. He emphasizes building tools to use for problem-solving in biological systems in general. He's also really funny.
Excellent professor. You can tell that he definitely loves teaching biology, from the way he speaks with such enthusiasm. Burg is straightforward with the expectations for assignments, he will throw out a couple of fun facts but is clear about what will be on the exams. Took his class as part of a G.E requirement and loved it.
I love professor Burg! As a non-STEM major, this course was not that difficult. Attendance is not mandatory although the exams are based on what he writes on the board. We had 2 research papers due, but not a lot of homework. Overall, he was a very funny guy, made the class interesting, and was easily understandable for anyone. Would take it again!
Professor Burg is an amazing professor, and definitely one of my favorites at UCSD. His knowledge and passion for the topic of cancer is fascinating which makes the class enjoyable. Exams are straightforward and based a lot on what he writes on the board during lectures although attendance to lecture and section is not mandatory. Took for GE
Prof Burg's passion for biology (esp. the kidney haha) is absolutely contagious. The exams are tough with a high curve. We had three long writing assignments, midterm, and final. A lot of things needed to 'memorize', or as he says, just learn. He is great at zooming out and connecting material. Spirited, funny. One of my fav Prof's.
I personally liked professor burg, but I would not take him if you are looking for an easy A. Going to lectures and sitting in the front is helpful because he writes everything on the board but his handwriting is all over the place. He prepares you pretty good for the tests because he always specifically says what's gonna be on it.
Burg was a fine professor. His handwriting is not good and he insists on writing on the worst chalkboard. Unless you want to sit in the front every single lecture, you will probably not be able to see very well. He also goes over things in a unique way that I'm not a fan of; however, I can see why people would like it. He's funny though.
Professor Burg is amazing! He made his class very interesting and is super caring. Be aware though, this class includes A LOT of information.
Very easy class and lectures are clear. Tests are almost 100% based on what is covered in lectures.
Professor Burg is an amazing teacher and always makes the lectures fun and exciting!
Burg is amazing and super funny! If you have the opportunity to take his courses please take them!
He is very human, funny, and obviously cares a lot about what he teaches. He was very transparent with what we could expect to see on assignments and exams. The way he presents material in lecture can sometimes be confusing/disorganized, but he makes up for it by extensively reviewing important content. I would 100% take another class with him.
Professor Burg is an amazing biology professor. I learned so much in his class and he is so passionate about people understanding their options when confronted with cancer. He makes the class engaging and the exams aren't too hard and are very reflective of the course content. 100% recommend!
professor burg is so slay tbh. please go to lectures it's not that hard. he's super engaging and cracks awesome jokes. also, you can stay after class to ask clarifying questions which is important for tests. he tells you what's gonna be on the tests but still study. I'm not even a bio major and I LOVED this class. please take it if you can.
Prof. Burg is the best professor at UCSD theres really nothing else to say about him he is just great! Definitely take him if you can!
Professor Burg is amazing! His lectures are extremely understandable. His exams are exactly like the practice exam and the slides. I just memorized the concepts and practice exams and got good grades each time. Few homework. His TAs were extremely helpful! Gave us cookies for the final and candy for Halloween. Took him because I hate bio!
Although I'm not a Biology major, Professor Burg made the course enjoyable. He is a very funny person which makes the lecture very entertaining. However, his lectures are very material heavy. Would have him as a professor if I had to take another Bio course.
Goat.
Great professor, I learned a lot. Cancer biology requires a lot of memorization, but I found it manageable. The TA Juliana carried! She made possibly the best discussion slides I've ever seen. Although she graduated, she started posting on youtube (Shrewd Science).
He's the best professor I've had at UCSD. He's super caring, funny, passionate, just everything you'd want in a professor. Tests have a lot of material, but are super easy if you just study what he tells you to.
Very entertaining, and informative lectures! pay EXTRA attention to everything he writes down on the whiteboard. Exams are content-heavy but very fair! Offers lots of extra credit opportunities if you aren't the best test-taker(1 midterm 1 final). OH's very helpful. Cares about his students and tries to make the class fun. Discussions on Zoom.
Absolute GOAT of a teacher. Cared so much about students' success and was super passionate about cancer so he taught a lot of extra material to prepare you for his UD class. One midterm one final, throws lots of extra credit, phenomenal TAs, and he's very passionate about teaching. I would take him 10 times over if I could
Mike is a great guy with very clear guidelines for what he is testing for. However, his presentations and worksheets are pretty unorganized and even the final needed to be corrected while taking the test. Like many labs, a good TA matters and luckily Hannah was great. Overall, a good professor with some disorganized aspects
Professor Burg makes the class super engaging with his great sense of humor. While the lectures can be dense, attending pays off - he gives clear test previews. For study prep, Unstuck ai and the practice exams were lifesavers. Definitely take this class if you can!
One of the best professors at UCSD-- he actually cares about getting to know his students! Very clear on what he expects from his students and what we need to do to succeed in his class. Always willing to give extra help and shows that he wants his students to do well.
Very clear on expectations in labs, papers, and exams. Great TAs, made labs very fun. One quiz, one midterm, one final, 3 lab reports--each worth more than the previous but gives great feedback and very open to helping. Would take again.
Awesome professor. He teaches thoroughly and the lectures are helpful. It is so funny when he needs "to take a drink of vitamin water" when he gets passionate about the content in lecture. Nice, caring, great teacher, I recommend. There are a few papers to write that are dense, but the rubric is very clear. There are also 2 exams in person.
Amazing professor with so much passion. He is so sweet and wants you to actually learn. You have to put in a little work and memorization but not a crazy amount.
I loved Professor Burg! The lectures were long but lively especially for 8am. Everything he tests on he writes on the board. I bombed the first final due to illness but the 3 papers cushioned my grade thankfully. He gives extra credit. He really helped me understand the intricate mechanisms of cancer. Take cell bio and physio before this class.
Professor Burg is great! Took him for both BIMM134 and BIBC103 and he's super funny and knowledgeable. Class is not hard if you put in the effort and take advantage of professor/TAs.
Burg has been one of my favorite professors ever , he is passionate about what he teaches and really does want to see his students succeed. His humor and enthusiasm during lectures makes them fun and enjoyable to watch. It is a tough class of course but as long as you study what he writes on the board you'll be good! Take him if you can!!!
Highly recommend going to lectures in person if you can, he makes every class fun to go to, even if the content can be a bit dense. Grade is split evenly between papers and tests, which are curved too!. Really sad that him and other unit 18s aren't going to be teaching as much with budget cuts. If this course is offered PLEASE TAKE IT!
Disorganized lectures and terrible terrible TA
The kind of professor who is easy to over-rate. He's a really nice and personable guy who clearly knows a lot about the topic, I just wouldn't say he's good at teaching. Get ready for a lot of content and some confusion in lecture. Overall I would still recommend taking this course for the interesting content and Professor Burg's unique philosophy.
Best prof i have taken. Wasnt easy, but got an A. He is a little picky on tests but given the tests to written assignment ratio, I believe he makes it fair AND engaging for students. So funny. Watch lectures, pay most attention to the blackboard, but also make sure to listen to catch minor details.
Burg is a very passionate, engaging professor who cares a lot about the subject, his students, and the greater world of academia. A little disorganized, but he emphasizes what you need to know. Would recommend going to OHs, if you go regularly he'll provide feedback and grade them (instead of reader/TA). Tests are reasonable if you put in the work.
The class was very straightforward, he basically tells you what questions he's going to ask before the test
One of the most caring and funniest professors ive taken at UCSD. Extremely passionate in what he teaches. Slides are unorganized and they can be very overwhelming but most people succeeded by just paying attention to everything he wrote on the board. Exams are very straight forward and do not try to trick you. Def recommend everyone to take Burg!!
Oh man. Mr.Burg, you are probably the most memorable professor ive ever had. Love this dude
The lab appears long but its more waiting than anything. The lab is straight forward and he makes it clear as to what will be done. I would take another class with him if possible, and the extra credit is crazy. Very caring professor and I have nothing but good things to say about him !!
The class is interesting but a bit content heavy. Lots of repetition to make sure the point gets across. Reports are part of the class but he gives enough time to write them. He's funny and genuinely tries to make things as easy to understands as he possibly can. Definitely recommend him to everyone who wants a bio class.
