Mr. Burns is great! He is really entertaining and although doing speeches and communication is kind of boring he makes it very interesting! TAKE HIM! He's a fantastic teacher and he has great lab instructors
Was vey interesting in class but gave a lot of work outside of class to do. Test weren't to bad because you did half of them in a group and the other half on your own.
young professor who relates with students and cares about helping you learn.
Professor Burns was an awesome professor! Very clear. Textbook is required. Study terms and do not take tests lightly! Speeches are fun, choose interesting topic and make it interesting! Take Professor Burns! Do study guides in book. Awesome class!
Very interactive. Relates everything you learn back to things and examples that really interest the students. You can tell he loves his job. The test are kind of hard, but only really the first one. The following test are structured similarly. The only bad thing I can say about this class and this professor is the mandatory attendance policy.
Love this guy, hate the lab instructors
Great professor! He is actually the reason I decided to get a minor in Comm Studies. He really does care about his students. He made the lectures interesting and relevant. Study the power points he puts online and you should be good to go for the tests.
I took him for interpersonal communication and had the best experience ever. He is one of my favorite instructors here at Texas State University. He loves teaching, and he loves the subjects that he teaches, and it rubs off on his students. He is very hands-on with his students, but allows them to grow and learn on their own as well. Take him.
BEST PROFESSOR OUT THERE! He made lectures fun and interesting. He really cares about his students success. Comm 1310 is a hard class at TXST in general and you have to get a B for all majors. The tests are super tough and trick you. You will need to study hard for the tests, but that is all COMM 1310. Didn't use textbook but you NEED the workbook!
One word to describe this guy is outgoing! Every lecture is so funny and entertaining which helps you stay awake and remember topics! Lab instructors will be your main teacher though, so get to know them well, they can save your grade! As for easiness, this class was super easy and mostly common sense. This class is why i want to minor in comm!
Dr. Burns was just amazing from the minute I walked into his class, he's a great teacher and explains everything very well. There was never a dull moment since he's very funny and always keeps the energy up so if your not really a morning person and have his class around the early hours you will not fall asleep. Reading textbook is crucial to pass.
Great teacher, so interactive with all of his students will take the time to help you pass! Fun class you will actually look forward to going to his class! Makes it fun not boring! #teamburns
He is very enthusiastic about teaching and makes the lecture class enjoyable. The topics he discusses are quite broad so make sure to do the readings. The tests are based on the textbook, not off of the powerpoints so make sure to purchase the required text.
One of my favorite classes I have taken. Dr. Burns is clear cut and keeps the class intresting. He relates the learning topics to everyday life. As long as you study your notes and read the book, you should pass. He post his power points online. He is more than willing to help you, but also has excellent assistants available.
Dr. Burns was an amazing professor. He was always very energetic and made a teaching theater feel like it was a tiny classroom. Tests are tricky as they are conditional, but he makes sure to explain all of it. Dr. Burns makes everything that he's teaching about relevant to the class and to your life. I'd recommend him to anyone! Great labs.
He is the most dedicated professor I have ever had at Texas State. I am a senior and took my Gen Edu last and I wish I would have had him sooner because I would have taken every class he teaches. Burns cares about his students. He is fair and has high expectations. AMAZING!
Going into this class I did not expect to enjoy it as much as it did. Comm 1310 is a class everyone has to take, and I loved it mostly because of Burns. He makes his lectures so interesting, he's a really funny guy, and he relates everything to current news and everyday experiences. Any chance I have to take him again for any other class, I will.
I loved this class! The "celebrations of knowledge" (tests) aren't hard at all and as long as you're paying attention you'll be fine. Burns is the most inspiration professors I've ever had, and now I'm getting my minor in Communications because of him! Such a great guy and really cares about his students.
He is extremely helpful and willing to work with you individually. His tests can be tricky and most think it's all about common sense, but trust me, you'll want to study if you expect to pass any of the tests. Overall, he's a brilliant professor with wonderful real life examples and I feel the material would benefit anyone in the real world.
Lectures are SOO amazing! He's an amazing professor and super funny. Test can be tricky but he is willing to help. You just have to really study for your test (celebration of knowledge).
Dr. Burns is great because he really knows what he's teaching and puts effort into his lectures so you understand it all. Most the grades are done out of class with your group but he makes sure in class that everybody understands the assignments. Make a good timeline at the beginning and stick to it and you'll survive but its a really tough class.
Burns is FANTASTIC. The way he explains concepts in lecture and relates them to real life makes everything much easier to understand, and he's also really funny and entertaining; I never got bored during his lectures. Don't get me wrong, the assignments are difficult, but he'll walk you through them and give plenty of help. HIGHLY recommend.
Awesome guy that makes class interesting. His expectations of the students are very clear and he is more than willing to help you meet them. Workload can be heavy but if you put in the work you'll do well.
I took comm1310 last semester as a first semester freshman. Burns is VERY political when he lectures and very very liberal. It was hard to pay attention sometimes because his lectures got a little boring but you could tell he tried to be interesting. I kind of find him to be a little entitled but that's for personal reasons.
Burns was such a funny lecturer and interesting professor overall. He's clearly mastered his communication skills and was very easy to learn from, his lectures were very interesting. The tests weren't too hard, just be prepared to study and the speeches were actually really fun, despite my nervousness going into them. I can't recommend Burns enough
Very hard class. Lot's of reading and home work but you will learn so much and genuinely enjoy his lectures. He is a sweet guy and can be pretty funny.
He is a great instructor that makes communication interesting and relevant. I expected this to be an easy A class. It isn't. You must read to be prepared for the tests and you will spend more time with a lab instructor than you will in his lecture. But I would recommend him especially if you want to become really good at communication.
Dr. Burns is a fantastic professor and lecturer. Although Comm1310 is a ridiculous class, I can't imagine a better way to teach it. I would recommend Burns as the lesser of many evils in terms of this class. He is very friendly and seems to care about his students.
Dr. Burns is a really cool guy and genuinely cares for his students. Comm isn't everyone's idea of a good time but he makes it as bearable as possible. Tests are harder than you'd expect so make sure to study and read the material carefully.
Go into this class with a hard work ethic. The tests can be tricky but I recommend studying early. I made an A in this class with 5 points to spare. I suggest attending all of the classes because you are awarded 10 extra points. Burns is the best, makes lectures so interesting. BUT, your lab instructor is who grades you, so ask friends who to take
He is a great professor, communication is actually a tough class but as long as you study and read the book you'll do fine. He gives many extra credit opportunities and depending on your lab professor it will make or break you. Also he wears bowties which is an automatic plus.
He was the best professor I have had. He always knew the students by name and had a great attitude in class everyday that made me want to learn
Burns is a great lecturer. He makes them fun and entertaining. He cares about his students. You're assigned a lab instructor the first day. Attend class the whole semester and you'll get extra points. Extra credit all through out the semester. Do the practice tests and reviews from the work book and you'll pass the tests no problem.
Exams: Very easy. Spend 3 hours on the study guides the night before A. You will spend most days with your TA instead, honestly. As far as the lecturing goes, it was good. I liked the guys personality. The content is very easy and mostly common sense, so there isn't much that can go wrong. Don't miss class as attendance can really cost you.
Great class to take, especially if you have a heavy class load other than COMM. I haven't open my textbook at all and have a B+ easy. Minimal effort with a great outcome, plus a really enthusiastic lecturer every time you walk in. The lab instructor is hit or miss, but the overall course was amazing and interesting even.
LOVE HIM!! I took this course when I was a Junior and loved it! He is the best professor at Texas State! The course load is a bit heavy, but if you follow the instructions, it will be an easy A. Attendance is mandatory and you can only miss 3 classes without it affecting your grade, but if you don't miss any, you get 10 points added to your grade!
Dr. Burn's personality makes lectures enjoyable and entertaining. He is a very cool guy and wants his students to succeed. He definitely makes COMM as interesting as possible and I couldn't imagine taking this class with any one else. Would definitely recommend!
He is the best. Nuff said.
Burns is the the coolest professor I have ever had!
Take his class! He is awesome and wants all of his students to succeed. Get to know him! Ask for help if you need it, he's always happy to help.
Mentor, caring, and always ready to work with his students. Ask him questions and participate, and he will work so hard so you can ace the class.
Coolest teacher on this campus. Ask him about his time working in the olympics
Burns actually cares about you and wants you to do well, but you spend most of your classes with the lab instructor so just hope you get a good one. The tests are really easy. They're exactly like the review that's in the guidebook. The one bad thing is that he takes points off your grade for every class you miss after you miss 3.
Dr. Burns is the best!! He genuinely cares about his students and wants everybody to succeed. Attendance isn't technically mandatory, but if you miss more than 3 you lose 10 points per day. However, if you go to all classes, you get 10 points added on your final grade. READ THE BOOK DO THE STUDY GUIDES IN THE GUIDEBOOK OR THE TESTS WILL BE HARD!!
Burns is a great lecturer. Provides good examples, funny stories. Would not take early in the morning if you don't like morning people.
Burns was a fun professor! He knows what he is talking about and very qualified. Keeps class interesting and wants you to succeed. Class is not difficult, just do the reviews given in the workbook and you should get a B+ or higher. Some extra credit, but not much. Two speeches are given in this class.
Very interesting lectures- its the lab thats tough. Burns ROCKS. Take this class seriously and get an A
Dr. Burns is an AWESOME professor!! One of my new favorites!! He kept the class interesting and fun! The guide book and text book will be your bff to study for the tests! Also, it helps if you pay attention to the examples he uses in class for the tests! Only 2 speeches in lab! You get 10 extra credit points to your grade if you don't miss a class!
I spent 4 years in the Comm Dept and did not come across a more invested professor. Dr. Burns is hands down, the most intentional and passionate faculty member of the Communication Dept. He wants each of his students to develop & succeed not only academically, but personally as well and he does a fantastic job at bringing out the best in others.
Young and relatable, making the class extraordinarily interesting and fun to be in. Makes it seem personal even though in a lecture hall. Tests are hard but if you study you'll be fin, but final is cumulative.
Best professor Ive ever had
An amazing Professor-- one of the best I've ever had. Of course with the Honors courses you should expect a lot of papers, but I never felt like I wasn't actively learning something about the subject or myself. He does a great job to keep class interesting and is super approachable.
Cares about students #TeamBurns
Dr. Burns was an amazing professor. I had a lab for this class so we only had him for half the year really but he made the most of it. The tests aren't hard if you just study, but you forsake need the book or you won't pass. If your lab instructor is a good enough teacher you should pass easily.
Dr Burns clearly knows his stuff about communications, but we spend most of our time in labs. Also, if you miss more than 3 days of class, they start taking points off your final grade. If you don't miss a day you'll receive bonus points. Definitely do the study guides given because they're super helpful on the tests. Fine teacher overall.
Dr. Burns is a very funny, passionate professor, but most of what 1310 comes down to is your TA because you spend most of your time with them.
Dr. Burns was very cool and funny. Make sure read the textbook and use the study guides, they help for the exams.
This class consisted of a lab, thats where all the homework came from. Michael himself is funny and gets the points across quite well. Don't just memorize the content, come up with situations for each definition and you'll do amazing on the tests!
Burns is a really interactive professor, he has lots of personal stories that he incorporates into lecture which makes it very interesting. Although he is not extremely tough, it is important to attend lecture and lab. Pretty much an easy A as long as you participate and actually try a little bit.
Burns made the class interesting and fun to take! He is really interactive with his students and knows what he teaches. Doing the review guides in the book helps a lot. The class is easy as long as you do the homework and study for the exams.
Professor Burns uses a powerpoint presentation and the textbooks for his lectures. There is a lot of information on both so I would try not to miss class if you can help it. When I had him, he was the lecture teacher and then we had a lab teacher that gave us all of our assignments and tests. Either way, go to both.
I highly recommend that anyone and everyone take Dr. Burns honors course if they can. His class was by far the best and most memorable that I have ever had. He is very clear, respectful, passionate, and funny. This class was very inspirational and genuinely enjoyable to be a part of.
Amazing professor, amazing lectures. He explained everything perfectly. Doing the speech assignments sucked but the tests were easy A's.
Really Good teacher, I would take him again if I needed to. Lectures off power points but knows what he's talking about. Power points are posted online.
good, interesting lectures, didn't pay much attention to most of his lectures (lol) still managed to get an easy B. would've had an A if I had did the post-test at the end of the semester but oh well.
Powerpoint's are online. Attendance is pretty strict. He is engaging, funny, and all around a good dude. Knows what he is talking about and is willing to talk with you. Criteria taught is also very useful in life as well. I recommend this professor.
I LOVE Dr. Burns. He's super funny and entertaining. He obviously loves his job and loves his kids. He is super nice and very smart. The lectures are entertaining so you don't daze off in his class. You can't be on your phone during lecture and you can't miss more than 2 days without losing points.
The grading was stupid, you got points for each assignment and test and I thought was hard to get an A. I only missed 1 class and got a B because the class I missed was a lab where we had to write a paper after and if you miss the lab they won't accept a paper which will hurt your grade. I thought he was good but the lab instructor was more helpful
You only get 2 freebies to miss class and that goes for both your lab and lecture. Tests are all scenario based so be sure to know the definitions. He's a good professor and has a true passion for the things he teaches.
Hes awesome!!! This class is easy but he makes it easier and is hilarious. Recommend him 100%!
Prof Burns is an amazing lecturer. Attendance goes into your grade. As long as you do everything and turn it in on time this class is an easy A. Just dont skip.
Very in class personality, feels like a celebrity doesnt really interact with students that much, mostly lab instructors jobs
Burns is a cool guy. If you're going to take this class I would recommend him. He's funny and makes class enjoyable to go to.
The class was very easy and the labs were fun but the lectures were long and boring. You cannot be on your phone or laptop in class or you will be marked absent. In order to pass you have to do all the quizzes and be present everyday.
Could obviously tell he was knowledgeable over the material. He gave loud and clear lectures and was very charismatic. Overall, a pretty nice lecture hall setting. (He was even on a TED Talk)
I took this class during Fall 2020 at the height of covid, which may be different circumstances for you. This class was hybrid, but I attended all lectures via zoom. Our "textbook" was a Common Experience reading and the price was included in my tuition. No tests, but lots of essays!
He's a cool teacher, a little quirky, but cool. I would recommend taking him if you could. He is very organized weekly and you would know if something is due. His videos are very helpful and AT LEAST look through the chapter before you take a quiz or you won't pass some of them.
Professor Burns is the least caring professor Ive ever had. He is extremely rude even through email and does not care if you need help. He gives out minimal instruction for assignments and then takes off points if you make any mistake. Grades extremely hard. If you miss a single assignment youll fail the entire class. Would rate a 0 if I could.
Dr. Burns is really good, however be careful of the IA's. They will tank your grade if you don't live by the rubrics. The course is honestly the problem. Curriculum is clearly pushing an agenda and is completely pointless. Dr. Burns is the pure reason the course is palatable. Worst thing about it is the course is mandatory. Entirely online.
Dr. Burns' COMM 1310 class was very easy. The class is basically led by your lab instructor, Dr. Burns only does the recorded lectures every week. The class is pretty much just reading the textbook and taking quizzes on the reading, with an essay and two speeches as the main projects. Definitely a very easy class, especially online. Self-paced.
Great professor but a somewhat disappointing class because of COVID. We weren't able to physically connect to the campus and its resources because some students were online. I still loved the Common Experience book and a few assignments, but this class was more work than I expected a 1-hour credit to be.
This class was switched to online due to Covid. He's a great teacher that is easy-going, and wants all of his students to pass! Doing your work, getting everything done on time, and staying ahead can get you a good grade.
Hes super sweet and easy to talk to . He doesnt hand out a lot of papers and quizzes are super easy to do if you read the material .
Burns was very understanding and gave a lot of assignments and extra credit. Must stay on top of work to pass.
Never answered a single email or TA never answered. Listened and took notes over every lecture and the text book, every quiz did average. Lectures were not specific or in depth to help with quizzes. Most grades are from quizzes and if you do poorly on them you will not receive a great grade. Textbook heavy.
depends on your lab instructor for the grading but he has interesting lectures and overall a good guy
Professor Burns was my favorite professor this semester. He responds to emails quickly and is super helpful. You do need to come to class, he gives you 2 days that you can miss but after that you will get points deducted. The quizzes are frequent but they're short and pretty easy as long as you read the chapters and come to class.
I absolutely loved this class. Dr. Burns is so well-spoken, and I loved listening to his lectures. I learned a lot in this class and in the required lab class as well. Definitely recommend!
I loved Dr. Burns, he was amazing and I learned a lot in this class. There are quizzes after every lecture but as long as you went to class and took notes you will be fine. The final exam is optional, as long as you took all of his quizzes and made a good grade you will pass this class.
Burns was okay, his lectures were mediocre and were not very engaging. The lab instructors did most of the work.
Dr. Burns was an amazing professor, every day was fun in lecture and lab. The only thing you need to do to succeed is read the textbook and take notes. But everything is open note, so as long as you do your due diligence, it's hard to NOT get an A.
Dr. Burns made a class that sounds like a chore one of the highlights of my week. He's a great lecturer and kept classes lively yet informative. The quizzes were easy and you could use the readings and your notes on them. The speeches (individual & group) were not too bad as you just gave them in front of your lab. Highly recommend!!
Relatively easy class, so long as you keep up with due dates on assignments. Labs can be fun, depending on your group and instructor. Overall, great class to help with public speaking.
The lectures themself are fine. Just read the textbook beforehand and then take the textbook quizzes after the lecture. I found that to be the most effective. This class is attached to a lab and that's where you do most of the work. There are 2 speeches in lab- 1 solo and 1 group. the lab professors are great too
One of the best lectures I have been in he is very engaging! If you read the chapter before the lecture the material might be easier to understand, however the slides cover everything for the most part. There are weekly quizzes, but if you pay attention they are very easy and you have 2 attempts. You have 2 speeches in lab, 1 individual & 1 group.
Took him for 3320 Sports Comm. Burns is such a harsh grader for a class that is only an elective. Get ready to pick the right people for groups for the two group projects that make up 50% of your grade. Tests are essentially handwritten essays with a small multiple choice section. Class shouldn't have been as hard as it was.
Michael Burns is truly an incredible professor! His lectures are super interesting, and I learned a lot! He genuinely cares about his students and encourages everyone to participate. He is a very good speaker as well. I also loved my lab instructor, Mikayla. 10/10 recommend.
Dr. Burns is an amazing professor. His lectures are helpful for quizzes and keeps them interesting. For quizzes though, focus on the readings from the textbook. The speeches may seem scary, but they are designed to set you up for success. You'll be interacting mostly with your lab instructor and you lab class for speeches and other assignments.
If you want to be a better speaker, take Burns. Through his Talking Like Ted course, I feel as if I was able to learn so much from his personal wisdom that I can incorporate into my own life in addition to becoming a better public speaker overall. He is a joy to be around and I've genuinely never been helped so much. 11/10.
Burns was an amazing professor. He made every lecture so enjoyable and he really engages with his students. Such a personable and kind professor. This class requires you to give speeches, but it made it less stressful when he would talk about it.
This course was mainly quizzes and speech related homework and projects. I did not understand why attendance to lecture was mandatory, but going to lab is crucial. =Do all the assignments. The textbook is given to you for free by the school, so don't buy it. You will use the textbook.
He is super easy to talk to! if you read the chapters, the quizzes should be super easy! The class does come with a lab, the final exam is a Group persuasive presentation. Very Easy!
Very well respected by many and for good reason. The only difficulty in his class is getting the work turned in on time. Lovely professor.
Professor Burns does a great job at making lectures entertaining. Class is pretty easy.
