Rel 101 World Religions. The positive: his lectures are enjoyable and he can be funny. The problem was that he made this GE class much harder than it needs to be. All four midterms are essay based as well as the cumulative final. Grades appear random with no explanation. Two essays & a trip to a church service. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!
Take this class! 2 midterms and one accumulative final. Tests are short answer but not difficult if you attend lecture, pay attention and take good notes. You only need one book (The Iliad), however, I didn't read the book and just attended lecture and I passed the midterm with an 82. Very interesting class!!
His fist semester here so we were guinea pigs, might be better next time. Knew the class was going to be tough when I got the book, tiny font no pictures; filled 2 notebooks with notes and still ended class with a B-. Takes forever to return tests, brushed me off when I approached him. Lecturesonline quizzes were helpful, church visit was cool.
I really enjoyed taking this class despite being so early in the morning. As a sophomore, I found Professor Caldwell's class straight forward. It is all about taking good in class notes. He pinpoints key ideas during lecture. Exams are based on short answer questions outta which you have the option of answering 1012 questions of your choosing.
I really liked him. He has a great sense of humor and made a class that can be dull fun. He was helpful to me when I went to his office hours.
actually wanted us to think. so much respect for student ideas in class and out. knows how to yak!
Great class. Passionate about teaching. He made the class interesting. Pay attention, take notes and you're golden.
Caldwell is a hilarious professor! His lectures are always entertaining and great. His tests aren't the easiest, but he is changing his style of testing from essay to short answer for this coming semester. You really learn a lot in this class. He is very knowledgable about this subject. I would definitely recommend him for RelS101!
If you go to every lecture you will pass with at least a B. The class is hard but I didn't read one assignment, book, pdf or anything & I passed with an A. Just take notes on everything he says because they will be on the exam. He's very helpful & the way he teaches is interesting, 3 exams, a few online quizzes that have unlimited attempts.
Professor Calwell gives really good lectures that sum up the material very well. However if you don't read the textbook you will not pass his tests. His tests consist of two essays, where you will be graded on your understanding of the material, lecture attendance evidence, and textbook reading evidence. Overall this class is tough, not impossible
You need to take good notes but he is great at teaching this class. If you have to take a Humanities class this is your guy. He makes class fun while satisfying your GE requreiments - win win!
Take notes on everything he talks about and you will get an A! Super funny guy, made the 8 am bearable. Makes the material interesting because he is so passionate. tests: (3 or 4) Free response answer 10/12 of the questions, and they are pretty general but you do need to know the material. Definitely recommend!
This class is easy to pass if you take notes on everything Caldwell says. He's basically a stand up comedian, so it's easy to pay attention. He is very passionate about the material, so he makes lecture very interesting. All test questions are free response, but it's easy to get full credit if you take notes during lecture & know the material.
This class was my favorite class of all time. I've been recommending it to everyone I know. Even though there's a lot of reading, his lectures are in depth and hilarious! He only tested on what he talked about in lecture, so I wrote down pretty much everything he said and got an A on the final and in the class. Loved it so much!
Caldwell is freaking awesome. He's the professor I talk about to all my friends at home like "this guy is so funny he says the most bizarre stuff in every class" (I'd go into detail but I don't want my review to be deleted) Please take this class. I never want to miss lectures because they're always so interesting. I love this dude
Pretty easy class. Has in-class quizzes that require you to show up to lecture for 10% of grade. Didn't read any of the books- just paid attention during lecture and half-listened to online lectures (which are pretty boring). Exams are 10 short answer questions that basically went over all of his lectures. Very funny and chill dude.
Required more effort than his Humanities class. Exams are long essay questions that you are given ahead of time + allowed a cheat sheet. Also gave us a project that required us to go to a religious service + write a paper on it. Still very funny and good lectures. Still have to attend class for those in-class quizzes.
The short answer tests were not my favorite but this teacher was amazing! He made almost every class funny as heck and I would absolutely take this class again or another class by him if my major needed it. Highly Recommended!!
Caldwell is by far one of the best and most unique professor's Ive had. The class consists of 6 books (depends on each semester) & each exam (3 total &1 final thats NOT accumulative) is on 2. You don't really have to read any just show up to the lectures, he breaks the books down for you! So taking notes is a must! Has quizzes online & in class.
TAKE HIS CLASS. he made going to class not horrible which is hard to do. He is super funny and personable. For tests he gives you the prompts you are going to write on ahead of time. In class he gives you quizzes which you fill out while he talks and are free points. One of my favorite professors forsure. online quizzes are all on quizlet.
This guy is great, his lectures are as interesting as a long-large section lecture can get. Exams are straight to the point, he is EXTREMELY helpful at office hours. He is one of the funniest professors I have ever taken. If you pay attention in class and take notes, you barely have to read to get an A. You might actually like the books though.
He gives you quizzes in class a lot but he answers them for you all the time with his lectures so pay attention and you can easily get full scores on all of them, his tests are only essays, theres no multiple choices, he makes the lectures fun and not boring so its easy to listen to him.
I signed up for this course thinking I would hate it. From the first day, I enjoyed this class all because of Caldwell. He makes lectures extremely interesting and always relates them to situations that will help you better understand them. I would recommend reading the books. Two midterms and a final which are essays! Also pop quizzes but easy!!
interesting teacher. the grade is based solely on in class essays and an outside project.
Caldwell is the FUNNIEST prof at SDSU! A godsend of a prof, he'll keep you engaged and thinking while he summarizes classics. DEFINITELY do a google doc study guide with the entire class -- I didn't have to buy or read anything this way. Gives you exam prompts in advance, and you study only 4. Check your e-mail often! Often quizzes in class.
Caldwell was by far the best professor I have ever had. He is beyond funny and somehow manages to make the Crucible and the Odyssey interesting. Although class isn't mandatory, I would highly recommend going to everyone because he gives a "pop quiz" almost every class but gives you the answers in class so easy 5 points. Midterms & final are easy
really interesting lectures even though topics are boring. there are 2 midterms and final. they are each 2 essay exams and he gives u the questions in advance and u can make a one page cheat sheet. class is boring and he grades hard but if u take notes then easy B but tough A
Caldwell is a great professor, and downright hilarious... but he definitely makes you work for an A! Lots of in class quizzes which he gives you the answers for, but he's a tough grader on essays. The class is really interesting and his lectures are very entertaining. I learned a lot and really enjoyed it, but everyone I know got a B...
Funniest professor I have ever had, would recommend taking any of his courses! The highlight of my week for sure! Very difficult grader though, hard to get an A unless you read, read, read! Which I didn't... But wonderful course and made it relatable to our lives as a college student in this time period!
He's pretty rude so don't expect a warm welcome when you need to ask him something outside of class. This class is a very easy B but it is extremely difficult to get an A. If you are willing to overlook his arrogant/sarcastic attitude and willing to put in a lot of effort, then go for it. If not, find an easier GE that satisfies this requirement.
Caldwell is a pretty cool teacher. Attend his lectures because there are quizzes, basically credit or no credit (5 points each) if you go which can possibly hurt your grade if you never go because they are a large amount of your grade. Go to class and give detailed responses on his exams and you'll be fine... ALL ABOUT DETAIL!!
Caldwell is the best professor I've ever had. He's hilarious and makes every complicated book we read seem so simple. But as much as I read, studied by myself, or studied with other people, I could not get an A on any of his tests. I got a B every single time. Seems impossible to get an A to me. But maybe humanities just isn't my thing.
really interesting class and such a cool guy, keeps class interesting. go to class because there are little quizzes that he gives out but answers for you during the lecture. you dont have to read the textbook but will need it for tests (which are essays) he gives you the questions before hand and lets you make a study sheet to use
Funniest professor you'll ever have, really knows his stuff and makes class interesting.
super funny dude, makes class fun and easy to learn. Class is based on three essay exams, mini quizzes that he basically gives the answer to throughout lecture, and 1 main research paper. Fairly easy class, if you miss class you might not do well on the essay exams.
It is very easy to get a B in this class, however if you want an A, simply taking good notes in class & making a good essay out of it will not be enough as he wants outside research included in essay exams & it seems he skims essays when grading & just gives everyone B's unless he happens to notice much information that wasn't presented in lecture
Really genuine guy. Tells it like it is and is always honest with you. Passionate about what he teaches and is a great teacher. Makes class interesting and you'll never be bored with him. I've taken him twice and haven't had a single regret.
friendly & down to earth. had his lecture first in the morning yet still managed to make a lovely experience of it. He'll make the material relatable by telling stories & examples making it rememberable. Time pass by quick in class. pay attention, do the reading, you'll be able to learn have fun & get a decent grade. Learned a lot from him, respect
Caldwell is a super entertaining professor to watch lecture. Class is mandatory, considering there is an in-class quiz every day. The midterms are all essays and his grading is very subjective. Speaking with people who read all the books and people who didn't, it doesn't really matter as long as he likes your style of writing.
This is a class for you if you're a person that loves to gain wisdom in a philosophical way and likes to critically evaluate readings. Must attend all lectures because there's a quiz every lecture and they're super easy. On the exams try to be original, don't copy down what he said in class, try to challenge them and bring examples from the book.
This wasn't a bad class but it was the wrong choice for me. Too much reading about topics I wasn't interested in. Caldwell is a nice guy but a very tough grader, you really have to work for a good grade. Don't take this class unless you love reading and discussing Greek Gods, Machiavelli, Plato, and Shakespeare. He gives daily quizzes too
Very funny guy and his lectures are super entertaining. He gives in-class quizzes (easy points) which make it hard to skip class, however he is a VERY harsh grader when it comes to tests. He only gives 2-3 A's per test and you have to do a lot of outside research AND prove that you read the books to get an A. NOT an easy A class - be warned!
Caldwell was by far my favorite professor this semester. His jokes are hilarious and even though the material he is teaching you is pretty heavy, he makes it super understandable in a funny way. He had quizzes in every lecture which were basically your notes. Don't miss class or you'll fail the exams. He is an eeeasy B if you go to lectures.
Easy B, hard A. Theres required quizzes at every class, but they're incredibly simple. If you go to class you can get away with not doings the readings. Theres 3 exams, and they're all essays. Most everyone gets a B, if you want an A you have to talk about material that he didn't cover. His lectures are hilarious, and going to class is enjoyable.
His lectures are easy to listen to and he is super funny. Tests are blue book tests based on books and lectures and he is a tough grader-rarely gives As. He gives quizzes every class as attendance points.
Caldwell definitely makes you work for the A, but this is an easy B class. He is hilarious and makes the content so much easier to understand. You can get away with skipping A FEW classes, but he gives quizzes every class and he basically gives you the answer during lecture, so they are easy points to obtain. Overall, great dude.
You will have to read a lot for this class but the books are fine and somewhat interesting. His lectures are really fun and will make going to class way easier (also, go because he always pop's up quizzes). Overall a really nice guy who wants to be close to his students. He grades tough (5 or 6 people get A on exams) but you should definetly take.
Attendance is mandatory because he does an in class quiz over the material he's talking about everyday but its easy if you pay attention. You have to read the books to get a good grade in this class because the mid terms are essay format. Not too bad of a class, I just generally wasn't interested in the books he chose so I didn't read them.
Caldwell changes lives if you let him. Read. The class is an utter waste if you don't. Daily pop quizzes and the concepts are difficult to comprehend, but if you stay focused in class, you'll get it. He makes you want to understand. He's hilarious, enlightening, charismatic, and a tad abrasive- but in a good way. Absolutely take him! He's the best.
Caldwell is a pos. Hes an extremely tough grader and assigns the most pointless prompts for papers. Everything youve learned about writing a paper (MLA, APA, etc.), throw that all away. His feedback on papers literally say No. Hes a cool guy but I do NOT recommend taking any classes with him.
I like Mr. Caldwell. I really do. I think he encourages a different type of thought. Throughout the semester, we read some books that weren't particularly interesting, but the concepts he was able to extract and get us to analyze and apply to our own lives made the class worthwhile. Read the night before! Participate! Come to class!
Caldwell is a brilliant professor who really knows his stuff. He explains religion in a comprehensive way why also engaging in the class. It also helps that he is incredibly humorous and witty. However, the essays assigned have no real grading rubric, so it is hard to receive an A on essays.
I loved Caldwell. He is by far the funniest professor I've ever had. The tests were all in blue books and if you meet with him to talk about the material before you will do really well. Lots of reading but he keeps it interesting. There are pop quizzes during the lectures so you have to go to class but its such a fun class you'll want to go.
Would definitely take another class with him and actually plan on taking another. Yes he is tough on grading but you definitely learn the material books are a little boring, he keeps you awake with his personality for sure.
He is so funny almost the whole class always went to lecture. He does give points for attendance. Exams are about the books we read so it is best to actually read them
Caldwell's Hum405 class was perhaps the first real college class I've ever taken. -actually has high expectations for you -expects you to participate in class -brutally honest feedback with essays yet a lenient grader If you give it your all, I expect you to gain the most from it. Unfortunately, I regretfully didn't.
One of the most entertaining professors on campus! His class was hard for me though because I personally didn't enjoy the readings. There's 3 essay exams and you MUST read the book or have some type of knowledge on it in order to pass the class. He hands out daily quizzes that you fill in while listening to his lecture (super easy).
Very eccentric and personal teacher. While he is comedic with no filter, he will expose people, make comments, and call on unsuspecting students for answers. Attendance is mandatory as he gives mini quizzes each lecture, all tests are written on blue book. Must read all novels to receive an A but he gives the questions in advance for you to study.
He is a very fun teacher. Comedic, making the class fun. He can call on students to answer or can expose them. Gave quizzes in each lecture worth 5 points, making lectures mandatory. Tests are essays about books you have to read. Honestly, you don't have to read, just make sure you go to lecture and easy B.
Easy B, Hard A. Very funny and entertaining, and some great lectures. But if you are a person of faith, be forewarned. This is a class about faith and hope being taught by a skeptic who believes that faith and hope are simply stories we use to get through life. Any opposing viewpoints will just make getting that A even harder!
Pretty entertaining teacher. He knows a lot of people don't read and you can still pull off a good grade. Tries really hard to make the class laugh(too hard sometimes) and doesn't care too much about how class is spent, but he will help people who want help and knows the material well. You need to read the books if you want an A. I barely read.
Amazing lectures. Super funny and entertaining. Definitely read all the texts or at least skim through them. If you attend all the lectures you will do great, but you will want to attend lecture because after each there is a quiz. You complete the quiz throughout the lecture Only 3 exams, 1 is the final, and they are essay exams.
A great professor, great lectures that teach you a lot about the readings in class. Should definitely read the books in order to do good on the 3 essay tests given. Daily quizzes, in class, so it is easy to get the answers if you listen. Literature is not everyone's favorite, but he makes the class very interesting and is so funny!!!
This class is an easy B but harder A. More than half the class barely reads the material expected to be read but if you attend every lecture it is easy to get a B. There are quizzes you fill in throughout class every lecture so make sure to attend lectures. The exams are essays but he gives you the option to use a full page as a "cheat sheet".
He is one of the rudest professors I have yet to come across. His arrogance is what makes it hard to focus on lectures.
Caldwell is chill and funny, makes lectures very engaging. You need to go everyday to get credit, and there's only a handful of essay tests which aren't too bad if you prepare for them. All you have to do for this class is read, the books are old and can be challenging, so if you're not up for that I wouldn't take this class
He's a harsh grader but his lecture is definitely entertaining. Make sure you do the readings before coming to class and listen to his online audio because he gives pop quizzes. If you are not interested in Greek mythology and are looking for an easy A, this class is probably not right for you. (cheatsheet is allowed for every exam)
So here's the deal, his lectures are great & funny but you need to show up to get credit. There are three written response tests and he is by far one of the toughest graders I've come across. You need to prepare & read in order to get a B. If you want a good funny lecture & to learn the basics of mythology take this class but for credit/no credit.
Caldwell is one of my favorite teachers ever. (Took his honors seminar-style Idea of the University class.) He is hilarious, lets students lead discussions, and is not at all concerned with etiquette/formality in writing/speaking - only content. He acts brash and difficult, but is really wonderful and cares about his students. HIGHLY recommend!!
His class is literally so entertaining. I didn't read the books that were assigned and still got a B in the class. He allows you to have a cheat sheet for the tests and actually gives you the questions he will be asking so its kind of hard not to do good on them.
3 written response papers. In-class quizzes that you fill out as he lectures every session. His lectures are entertaining but he assigns so much reading for a 101 class that I wouldn't recommend taking him. If u never read the books, you'll most likely have somewhere from a B to C+. Caldwell even says himself that most people end up with B's.
Caldwell is a really funny dude and teaches about very interesting things. He makes his lectures relatable and leaves his students with something to think about. There is a quiz every class and 3 written exams that are hard to score high on unless you read the book. Difficult to get an A but most students end with around a B. Would recommend!
He gives funny lectures and is very upfront about what he expects. However, he grades his exams incredibly hard for an intro class. He's a cool guy, but I wouldn't take this course again if I could go back. He doesn't like to give As, even if you work for it, show up to every class, and read the books. Gives feedback like "decent essay." no help??
very funny lectures, he definitely makes class interesting and makes the books easier to understand. however it is important to read all of the assigned books because he is a hard grader on the exams. if you want to get a good grade, go to class because there are quizzes everyday that make up a big part of your grade
If you are taking him for Humanities just because you need to for your GE, drop this class and take any other class that satisfies the same category. When I signed up, the schedule said we only have lectures on Monday and Wednesday, then he decides to throw in a lecture on Friday too. His readings would be 100+ pgs long, assigned on Mon due on Wed.
Do not take this online. One of the worst classes I've taken in college. All of his lectures are just audio, with nothing to look at. Just a black screen with him talking for an hour. 3 written take-home exams that he grades hard af. If you're looking for an easy A, it's not this(at least in the online format). If you don't like mythology, avoid.
Your grade is based off of 3 essay exams. Lots of reading and if you don't do well on these exams plan for the professor to not be understanding.
Caldwell makes his lectures more interesting by telling jokes. There are 4-5 question lecture quizzes after every lecture due before the next class. (with multiple attempts) The only other thing graded is 3 1-page essay exams which you can ace if you watch lectures and take notes. I didn't read any of the books and got B's on every exam.
If you need any reasonable accommodations dont take Mr Caldwell. He was extremely disrespectful to me about my disability and refused to reopen a quiz. I had to contact the student ability success center and they have to force him to do it. so disappointing, not a nice or respectful man
The worst professor I've ever had. He does not email back and is not helpful at all. He's rude and is not understanding towards his students whatsoever. Your entire grade is based on 3 exams. Does nothing to keep the course engaging and his lectures are just audio of him speaking and a black screen. Save yourself and just choose a different class.
He grades you based off of 3 things: 1) 3"EXAMS" - THEY ARE ESSAYS, 1,000 WORDS MIN. EACH 2)Class Participation 3)Canvas post&replies. No extra credit offered. Grades hard on essays, and even if you show up and participate, he will still give you a B in the class. If you miss class, it WILL MAKE YOUR GRADE GO DOWN A LOT. I would not take him again.
I loved Caldwell. Super interesting and engaging lectures. You should read the assigned readings before, or you will be lost. He only grades a few essays. Your participation is Canvas and in-class discussions. You can get extra credit from doing extra replies on Canvas though so it's really not hard to keep up. Expect a B if you don't try.
Good class, but homework is usually assigned on Saturday night or Sunday morning and all is due on Monday.
I take him for HUM 409 (The Future) but they don't have the course listed here. Best professor I take for humanity course. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. Even though I rarely participate in in-class discussion but his lectures always make me not wanting to miss out. He is very knowledgable and funny. No extra credit though.
I love Caldwell! He makes lectures super fun, engaging and easy to understand. He made me WANT to show up to class. Every week is a discussion post, reading quiz and exams are two essays. I never did any of the readings, just paid attention to lectures and got a good grade. 10/10 would take again, hes truly passionate about what he teaches.
Show up to class, do the work, that's it. Pros: Talented lecturer, probably the only professor that can make a boring novel interesting and relevant. Likes jazz. Grades writing based on ideas and not form. Is completely out of his mind. Not for sensitive students. Cons: Chicago Cubs fan. Is completely out of his mind. Not for sensitive students
Such a fun class! Gain perspective on American Culture and engage in discussions.
Caldwell is amazing, I was skeptical going into the class because I had no idea what humanities was, but this dude is genuinely the best professor I've had. Class is mostly student-driven discussion. There's 3 big assignments based on the books you read, and the rest is made up of reading quizzes and discussion board. READ THE BOOKS!
Caldwell gave everyone a citizenship grade and started us at a "B". Then he was impunctual, poorly spoken, canceled class 10 minutes after we were waiting in our seats, and joked often about sex and the toilet. He said he's Black, but he enjoys enormous white privilege at this job. His coursework is not considered transferable to other HUM classes.
I always looked forward to Prof Caldwell's lectures - he's funny and he describes topics in ways that are relatable and easy to understand. However, I didn't give him a 5 is because he lacks feedback and his grading is weird and slightly strict - what is normally an A is a B, and an A+ is an A to him. But workload is easy and he cancels class often
