He turned what should have been a good class into torture through his condescending attitude and inability to understand what he was supposed to be teaching. He frequently wasted class time on pushing his personal political views on the class. Don't take him if you are a Christian, conservative, or someone who wants to think for yourself.

His tests are basically from his lectures, if you go to class and/or just read the book you will most likely pass. Midterm and Final are in your hands. I recommended him to my friends! He's great!
His tests are horrible, questions are pulled from a question bank without regard to the material covered in class lectures or the text book. He is also not willing to compermise. Take this class with someone else!!!
I would recommend taking the class from another professor. He was never interested in getting the students to learn and conceptualize the philosophy - what I teacher should strive to do. He constantly said "That's the best I can do." and then moved on within the text. Essays are poor due to nebulous demands to which he never indicated to the class.
I really liked his class and his teaching style. The tests are online, so its easy. I think he makes the material pretty interesting.
Take this class from someone else! I also feel he is unwilling to compromise. And his lectures are boring. I feel overall he was rude as well.
He's awesome. Go to class and read book and you'll be fine.
This class is boring... the notes are long and useless really because theres over 100 slides per section... he is rude and hard to communicate with ..overall not a good experience
He is not for every one! I personally loved his class. I just imagined him as a grandfather telling stories. It helped me from falling asleep! He is a total slacker, but that usually means less work for us. You definitely need to read the book to fully understand what is going on
Take this with someone else! Sure its not to hard but it was painful. His Religions class was biased, he expressed a dislike for Catholics and spent time pushing a political and ideological agenda. His papers where confusing, he asked for one thing on the syllabus and another in the prompt. Beware!
The worst 100 level class taught by the worst professor I've had in four years. His assignments are unclear and his grading unfair. He expects you to believe everything he says, and reject everything you believe. This class could be much more enjoyable, as long as he doesn't teach it. Oh ya, he harldy knows how to teach...
The class itself was very interesting but he was very egotistical and biased. Which made it hard to really understand the true meaning of other world religions. He is very strict on attendance and would often call out or tell a student to just drop the class if they broke his concentration by taking a bathroom break during his lecture.
you have to attend class so you can understand what you read the night before. he engages in a good lecture, you just have to be very open minded. and no, he doe snot force you to believe in what he says, he is just challenging you to think critically and outside your box.
The class itself was interesting and the subject matter was fairly straightforward. Michael is a good teacher if you like what he's saying. He has very strong opinions that in his class he treats as facts. If you write a paper that challenges his beliefs it will not do well. He knows his stuff, perhaps just too much bias.
Amazingly terrible. Misquotes history and changes words to his own meaning. No learning took place.
Prof. Candelaria is easy to take if you attend class and read the textbooks. We had two papers and 6 tests. The tests are multiple choice and he gives you two tries. Lectures are interesting and he tried to get the class to participate more. Go to class, take notes and read and you'll get an easy A
I loved this class, and I am not a religious person. I really enjoyed learning about the practices and history of different religion, and felt the class gave a fair representation of each one discussed. He kept my attention and encouraged questions and discussion. This was just a gen-ed, but I really enjoyed the class.
All he wants is for you to regurgitate the book. Not very approachable, or reliable when it comes to email or other forms of contact. Lame and boring.
This class is an easy A. If you are truly interested in philosophy you may want to consider a different professor. I never read the book and only used it when writing essays. There are a total of 6 online tests (all the answers can easily be found in the book) and 2 essays (1 midterm and 1 final)
This guy is terrible. He runs out of the class before most of the students, which makes it hard to ask him about course work.
Previous ratings are true. 6 online quizzes (easy) and 2 essays- communication with him is terrible. This is a 101 class so his grading is pretty relaxed. I (along with few) went to class often and actually enjoyed his lectures. Book isn't that bad to read. Overall, I enjoyed his class. I would recommend for an easy elective.
Tries to push his own views onto you. I'm not paying him to do that. I'm paying him to teach me.
VERY opinionated, highly unhelpful, sometimes very confusing, but the whole class is online quizzes and two essays, so the work load is not too demanding.
Lectures just didn't seem to work well.
While this wasn't an easy class, it was pretty fun and and I learned a lot. He is a harsh grader, but is open to letting you revise papers and re-submit them if there was a misunderstanding. Creativity and the ability to back up an oppinion are a must for this class's papers. A lot of material in a short time, but I;m glad that I took it.
I really enjoyed this class. Not because of philosophy but because of the teacher. Awesome guy! Just do the work and you'll do great!
Great class! I really enjoyed the content and the way Dr. Candelaria presented it. He definitely presents his own opinion on topics but this is not college algebra so I expect some personal insight and perspective. I highly recommend this teacher.
Not very clear in what you need to study, and not very helpful.
This professor was absolutely ridiculous. I never missed class and was still confused at the end of every sloppy lecture and during every impossible test. His final wasn't over any of the material we discussed in class or read in the book. PLEASE DO NOT take his class!
Great ONLINE instructor, only minor issues with WebCT. He is not clear on due dates but he gives discussions and quizzes. If you do the readings and turn them in on time you will get full credit. Make sure you ask questions about the 2 short papers your turn in, will be docked points if you don't. Other than that, great for ONLINE! :)
He knows he has the power to give you a horrible grade because one of the lectures before the final he said "hope you took good notes most of the test questions are not from the book or powerpoints just from what Ive said in class" at least this was true because over 1/3 of the final was nothing he mentioned more than once. Avoid at all costs!
Dr. Candelaria is a fantastic professor. I had him for religion class (online). He is very helpful and his tests are very easy; the material is interesting, and the class is great! Be sure to always hand in homework and be prompt with assignments - he is not demanding at all, as how people make him to be. He's a great teacher and I loved his class.
The topic was interesting, but his presentation was very dry, like just being there bored him. Exams were online except for the final, which was made up of questions that would require perfect memory for names of concepts in foreign languages. I would've preferred an exam that tested conceptual knowledge rather than obscure foreign words.
He's a brilliant guy with a lot of authority in his field, but ultimately his disorganization and rambling lectures made it hard to stay engaged.
He is very intelligent, but he gets caught in talking about himself and his books. He didn't teach me a thing, and when he graded papers he mostly graded on grammar. I don't recommend him for anyone, it was just a useless class.
He is highly insensitive to Christianity and will most likely say something to offend someone at any given class. Difficult to stay engaged in class. Very unorganized. Grades mostly on grammar on all the essays he assigns. Used the class as a platform to talk about how intelligent he is and all of his books. I do not recommend this professor.
He's kind of rude and super confusing. Cant wait for the semester to end.
I am not a religious person and even I was offended by the way that he would approach discussions- cocky and disrespectful. People barely ever talked in class because he created such a judgmental environment. On top of that he's crazy disorganized and can't use unm learn to save his life. Hopefully he reads these reviews.
Went on crazy rants about religion, government and socialism almost every single class. Asks questions to foster discussions, but responds with high amounts of arrogance and dismissal of anyone who disagrees with him. At least half the lectures had nothing to do with the actual class topic.
Mr. Candelaria is an interesting guy. He has strong opinions and beliefs which he is not afraid to share with the class. And yes, some people might be offended. But he teaches about many different thoughts about religion, and grades based on strong arguments and factual knowledge - not beliefs. No tests, just 4 essays. Cares a lot about grammar.
If you are easily offended do not take this class. if your religious foundation is weak it will break you. if you aren't religious then you'll be fine! He will say some nutty things in class. no tests, grade consists of 4 papers, and bad attendance can lower your grade from lets say for example a B to a B-. overall interesting guy.
Dr. Candelaria is the type of guy you either love or hate. I myself, loved him. He's hilarious and I quite enjoy how silly he makes religion seem. He's super opiniated BUT his opinions are ALWAYS founded on strong, valid, and concrete evidence. Started class as a Christian and ended up seeing how silly it is. Don't take it you're not open minded!!
His class is easy, but he is one boring teacher. His lectures are super boring. Once in a while his lectures will be interesting. The class consists of 5 online quizzes (which you have 2 attempts), A mid term paper and a final paper (both of which have to be 5 pages long). He gives you 6 absences, you miss more than that you will get dropped
I liked Christ & Culture. If you are a Christian, it definitely will challenge your faith. He is a Christian minister but also critical towards a lot of christian followers. As he put it, it is not a "faith based course"There are four 5 page papers (double spaced) that are worth 25 points each. He does spend the last 4 weeks promoting his book. lol
Easy grade overall, just going to the class is hard. He will target you if are a Christian. Do not share your opinion if it is different from you. He will laugh and get frustrated at you for not believing what he says. Try not to stand out. I made that mistake and he has laughed at me and my faith. Just, be wary of this teacher.
Professor Candelaria is a really good teacher. He's well-versed in the subject of religion and you will learn a lot about the history behind the Bible. If you're a Christian, he will challenge your faith (in a good way). Quizzes are tough (but he does give you 2 attempts) and the midterm/final essays are graded more off of grammar than content.
It was so hard attending this class. The class and lectures were unstructured and hard to listen to. A midterm and a final paper along with 5 online quizzes. It was nice that everything that was graded was done at home. We could choose the topic we wanted our essays to be about but if you want to learn philosophy-DON'T TAKE. Easy A though.
Lectures are rough (bring coffee and snacks to stay awake). He's an "ok" teacher, I didn't enjoy the way he ran his class or the disorganization of the online quizzes. The two essay are nothing to stress over, go to his office hours and have him give you feedback.
Online Religion with Candelaria was extremely easy. I took this course over the winter break intersession and the only hard part was remembering all of the deadlines. You do not need to purchase a textbook for this class-- he will provide his own textbook to you.
Confusing presentation during lectures
He doesn't care if you need help or don't understand something. He'll just tell you "Look online" or "I don't know". He literally has told me "I don't know". When I tried to go into his office hours he said "Sorry, no". I worked really hard on my papers and quizzes and never got A's. I'm a philosophy major, this is my fourth philosophy class.
He is rude and not helpful at all.
Phil101 is fairly interesting if you listen. There are midterm and final essays and also 5 quizzes. The quizzes are easy forgetting about and he doesn't really tell you about them. It is philosophy so wouldn't recommend if you're sensitive about religion and that sort of thing. He seems somewhat rude, but he is sometimes funny.
Could not grasp any concept he deemed not backed up by "empirical" data. Very narrow minded philosophical point of view. I can imagine he is probably a sad drunk with much angst for God.
He is a very good teacher and very funny, the class is only lectures with maybe 5 pop quizzes, a midterm and a final paper. Its a hard class to grasp so you must pay attention and really you can only know whats on the quizzes if you go. Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to go if you want to get a good grade.
Dr. Candelaria is not a good professor. He is wrapped up in his own world and point of view, and is inconsiderate and not willing to consider other perspectives. He grades on only two papers, and the assignment sheets are not updated, he grades only based upon if you write down his own ideas. Lectures boring. He needs work on cultural competency.
You dont HAVE to show up to class. But it honestly seemed like every time I didnt show up he marked me absent! His lectures are pretty tedious, not going to lie. Also it seems like he mostly steals the spotlight and doesnt allow a lot feedback from the students on the concepts discussed in class. But this class is fairly easy.
This class was relatively easy. Dr. Candelaria gave a clear schedule with due dates. Unfortunately, he was relatively disorganized and homework didnt get posted when it was supposed to be. Quizzes, homework, discussion posts and a final paper.
No textbook needed, it is provided for you. Took online and modules/ tests are opened at certain times. Tests were fair.
Took him Online, during winter session; that's the best was to take this particular professor. He had a schedule for when things were due. He also gave feed back. Fair grader. Expect quizzes, blogs&responses and one final paper. It was A LOT of material to cover but very possible quizzes. He provides the text that you read. Be open in your writing.
Dr. Candelaria is a very good teacher when it comes to grading but he is always stuck on his own opinion. His grading is very harsh but you will get a good grade if you try and put effort in your assignments. Overall, this class is okay and a little boring.
Dr. Candelaria is the best religion professor on campus. There are false claims that there are better religion professors but this is fake news.
I didn't like his class. His lectures are the epitome of strange. They really confused me. I did learn something from his lectures but I have had much better instructors in the philosophy department. I wouldn't take his class. Seriously, don't take his class.
Biweekly quizzes that weren't too hard, two papers (1 midterm, 1 final), not particularly helpful though. For emails with multiple questions, only the first question got answered (in as few words as possible). Prompt responses though. In class, if someone asked a question that could be answered in the syllabus we were told to look in the syllabus.
He does the exact opposite of clarifying the text and doesn't engage much with opinions that differ from his. He only tends to look at one side of the classroom. I had to change seats because he never saw me raising my hand. And he prematurely gave me a 0 for not adding responses to a discussion post, three days before the responses were even due.
He is probably the most disorganized professor in the state of New Mexico. It was a constant battle having to email him to ask him to give us access to online course material. When he did respond, there was often 5 hours left until it was due and refused to respond for requests for an extension. I had to be ready to hop at a moment's notice.
Only assignment checked are the biweekly essays, however you are assigned a ton of reading that are just not possible. Three different textbooks all over the place. Class is just lecture and some small group discussions.
I will never EVER take a philosophy course with Michael Candelaria again. He is the most unorganized instructor I've ever had; you can't trust him to input grades correctly, we never stayed on schedule, and at times he'd lose lectures and be unable to teach. He's very close-minded and his lectures are confusing. Bright side? Very light work load.
If you value your mental health PLEASE DONT TAKE HIM. I'm literally paying to get insulted by him, and I haven't learned a single thing from his class. In the middle of the semester for NO reason, he changed his grading scale and it has quite literally been weeks since he's put in any grades. His classes are a waste of time, money, and sanity.
Often goes on tangents and rambles nonstop as "lectures". The quizzes can be taken outside of class, but are difficult unless you have help from notes. Attendance is useless, but he insists that you are there. Class structure is very loose and you have to make sure to do well on the assignments, which there are somewhat few.
I dropped the course after a handful of lectures and reading other comments. He always had to have a problem with anything that was shared in class, no matter what, and he is disgustingly self-centered. Here's a word of advice: if you introduce yourself to a room full of 70 strangers by bragging about how many books you've written, you suck. Avoid.
When you inevitably end up doing your own research to write a substantial paper, get ready to be criticized for "not sticking to the course material." Little to no instruction on what we are actually supposed to read on a given week. Quizzed on things that aren't in the weekly assigned readings, and provided slides are useless without lectures.
This professor just isn't great, his classes are essentially lectures and he frequently goes off track to argue with students about their own opinions. His class is a joke, its easy. however, he gets mad if you miss class, and makes you wear a mask even after covid is done? just very annoying, will take again just because its an easy A
Worst Professor I have ever taken, Attendance is mandatory. This professor gives snarky and rude remarks about your work when turned in. He NEVER answers his emails no matter what. He gave me a zero on the final even before it was due.
Youre likely to find plenty of negative reviews of Prof. Candelaria here, but as someone with a real passion in philosophy, I can say that there are few professors who know more that this guy; he is much smarter than you may realize. A lot of people say that hes always arguing with students, but thays literally what philosophy is. Keep an open mind
Participation is encouraged but not necessarily required. Although it is not mandatory to participate, there are several opportunities to do so, and the discourses that can develop are where you will see Professor Candelaria excel. Be ready to read a great deal of dense material when taking upper-level courses such as Philosophy 361 Foucault.
The absolute worst philosophy professor at UNM. He never answers his emails+he argues with his students, he doesn't teach well. has a very clear bias. The only positive ratings here are from teacher's pets who change their opinion to get a better grade. Philosophy is the study of thinking, what type of professor doesn't let you use your own mind.
Goes on lots of tangents during lecture that result in there being less time to cover the actual course material, so lots of important things are skipped over. He treats the students as if we're stupid and has no faith in our integrity (assumes that we will cheat and use AI on the final essay unless we jump through crazy hoops to prove we didn't)
Doesn't take attendance until after break, very inconsistent with the attendance sheet and does not respond to emails. Wouldn't take his class again.
As a conscientious student invested in my education, encountering Professor Candelaria was akin to navigating a minefield without a map. Throughout my tenure in their class, I found myself grappling with a myriad of issues that extended far beyond the realm of academia.
take the class but DO NOT TAKE THE PROFESSOR. I've never had a professor I disliked as much as this guy
He's really nice and he makes a lot of really good points. However, he just talks very drone-like and it's difficult to sit in lectures for that long when he talks very monotone.
super nice guy! clearly knows his stuff, but only taught philosophy through a religious view (what his degree is in CLEARLY) and lectures were all over the place and impossible to follow. also super monotone- interesting prompts for papers and an easy grader- fun to discuss with, was just not interesting when learning about philosophy
VERY religious outlook on philosophy. Lectures were disorganized, he would go off track and rely on the class to keep him accountable. Will argue with students about opposing opinions. Does not respond to emails, takes attendance sporadically. Assigns work/quizzes never covered in class, A LOT of self led learning if you want to pass.
Dr. Candelaria is a very knowledgeable person in his class. He is very strict about attendance and requires a doctor's note to be excused. Class requires students to talk with each other and participate. No electronics like phones, computers, tablets, etc are allowed. All notes are to be hand written. Lectures every day and essay due before finals.
Professor Candelaria is a very smart man, but his strength does not lie in lecturing. He is a dry and slow lecturer, and often trails off with personal anecdotes or simply irrelevant stories. The class is supposed to be Introduction to Philosophy, but he focuses almost completely on the existence of God. I learned nothing about real philosophers.
