A little reading and a handout every week but the tests are 20 minutes and he is nice and funny. He never talks down. MBA @ Berkeley and MBA/PHD @ Rice

amazing
Absolutely great. Very intelligent teacher who knows a great deal about Logic and Ethics. Kinda tough, but he helps you through it.

wonderful, take it
A great teacher, funny but at the same time you learn your stuff! I recommend everyone who doesn't like phil to take him because it makes you like it afterwards. :)
he definitely knows his stuff. hilarious in a subtle way, tests are a breeze, readings are a bit complicated but if you read them, they will make sense. i love the class!
An awesome teacher! Readings are a little to complicated for someone who's not very "philosophical" but you'll definitely get it once he starts explaining it. He knows what he's talking about. He IS funny in a subtle kind of way. Luv him! ;)
You will absolutely love philosophy when you're done with the course. Dr. Capistran is extremely intelligent and has a subtle, dry sense of humor only smart people could appreciate. When people don't like him it is usually because they are too dumb to get what is going on...
I love his class. At first the readings were difficult but after a couple of assignments it gets easier. He really knows his stuff and thats what it takes for someone to be a good teacher. I definetely recommend taking his class! His tests are easy and he gives study guides.
I had this teacher for Phil 1301. He's excellent! He has thorough knowledge of the material. Sometimes the readings are difficult to make sense of on your own; but when he reviews the material afterward it becomes perfectly clear. You will gain new insight into philosophical thinking and a broad range of knowledge. I highly recommend this class.
Very strange indeed. He did not care about anyone as an individual. His lectures centered on singling students out and ridiculing them if they could not come up with a correct answer. Everything weighs heavily. Attendance is one of your grades. I did not find him helpful at all in furthering my understanding or appreciation of Philosophy.
condescending
He's a great teacher. Some people might think he's a little strange, but he just has a funny sense of humor. I think it's quite sexy.
He is very clear and he reviewed materials thoroughly. He will give you a greater understanding of Philosophy as a whole. It's a good intro class, it really is. Beware though, do NOT raise your hand unless you are confident in your answer, if you are incorrect in the slightest, he will ridicule you in front of the class.
Mr. Capistran will go out of his way to make you feel stupid, so pay attention in class and If he calls on you be prepared. Even though I got an "A" in his class, I would not say it was easy. Grades that are given are fair, the daily grades are straight from homework and he goes over test pretty thoroughly in his reviews.
Okay, he wasn't the least bit condescending, he just has an odd personality. It's not that he singles you out and ridicules you, it's the fact that he wants you to participate, and not just memorize facts but actually try to understand the subject. He's not going to let you give an incorrect answer, so yeah, he will correct you if you're wrong.
I didn't think that I would enjoy this class at all.But looking back, there were at least 2 philosphers whose work I really enjoyed learning. The professor is an amusing person and not boring whatsoever. I'd say that the reading assignments can be difficult to interpret depending on the individual, but that the exams are easy to pass if you study.
i enjoy attending his class, discussions are interesting,,just dont answer if your not sure wat ar u going to say or else he'll be picking at you all through the day,,he quiz u first before he lectures so you must really pay attention to the readings and assigns.,,his exams are pretty easy make focus on the review...
Very nice professor. Highly recommend him. Easy to make an A or B, if you will study his reviews.
rude. He gave me alot of crap about bring my laptop to class. He singeld me out and went on a tangent about how I was not paying attention. I had 2 pages of typed notes from the lecture and he still claimed that I wasn't aware of what was going on. I even showed him my notes and he still had the nerve to tell that I wasnt allowed 2 bring it back.
This guy is a great teacher. Be prepared to participate in class though. He likes to call on you to read and/or answer questions. But it is a fun class, and he is good at what he does.
Never a moment of bordom. Great teacher, really smart. Makes it (the point of the homework) very clear to you! Tests-memorize all the stuff he writes on the board with isn't that much.
He is hilarious in a weird way, relatively easy class, there's about 10 readings w/ HW. Readings are hard to interpret, quizzes one of the questions on HW. Can only miss 2 days of attendance before grade deduction. Study guides are the tests, so easy; short answer/true false/mult. choice/essay. Calls on you during HW discussion, DO THE HW!
I LOVED HIS CLASS! HE WAS FUN AND THE MATERIAL WAS VERY INTERESTING. EVERY OTHER DAY I QUESTIONED LIFE BECAUSE HE REALLY BROADENS YOUR PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD =)TAKE THIS CLASS IT IS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT!
really good teacher...explains well..must do the homework which can be difficult..but do the work and study and you will have an A
He kept class super interesting and has a great sense of humor. You MUST read the given material because your quizzes and tests will be on the reading and some lecture material. He will go down the role sheet and call each person by name so be ready for anything!! Great guy, I would definately take him again!
HE IS A GREAT TEACHER!! VERY INTERESTING!!! "THEREFORE I EXIST"
Friggin awesome professor. He has this odd charm to him. Very awkward but he is a very nice guy regardless of how odd he makes himself out to be. Daily quizzes (you HAVE to read the book). While the book is hard to understand, Capistran breaks it down to a point so simple that the worse student could understand.
MOST of your grade comes from attendance which is stupid. I felt like an elementary student. Ive made only A's on all the tests but that doesn't matter absences matter more than grades for this class. The material is easy. However, He knows the subject and all of his lectures by heart. Tests are easy, you just have to pay attention and attend.
he is amazing in a very weird way.going to class is a must, he loves punctuality as he is pretty punctualy himself.takes roll everyday if u r late u can still go upto him at the end of class n he'll mark u present. if u miss a class just talk to him and he will accept your excuse if its valid.very easy tests. same as review. just be attentive!
Dr. Capistran is the BEST professor I've had in college so far. He is very helpful, has reasonable expectations, and does everything he can to help his students. He is a very nice and funny guy, and I really enjoyed his class. Highly recommend him! You will gain an appreciation for philosophy. You must do your readings & participate in discussion.
He is a great teacher. You MUST attend class tho. Tests are easy as long you study the review because the review is basically the test.
AWESOME teacher! he's awkward and funny at the same time. i always found lectures to be interesting. i did not have to put a lot of effort into making an A. just show up for class and study the review! the review is the test!
You WILL need the text book and the additional book he assigns. I hated the class and found it and the reading assignments boring but Capistran was nice and funny in a weird way. Tests are easy if you simply memorize the review he gives you. MAKE UP TESTS ARE MURDER so dont miss the test.Quiz over reading every class so do the homework!!! Easy A :)
prof capistran is really funny and veryyyy very knowledgable!!!! he explains the material very clearly and helps you understand!!! he does NOT condescend anyone at all. he simply wants you to understand and tells you the correct answer, if you get it wrong. he is not rude at all!!!! he's cool 8)
awesome teacher! doubted the class at first but if you stick around you'll find its so interesting and at times very fun! just do the easy homework he assigns and MEMORIZE the review and you got an A. :)
He is a great professor. Buy the two books because he gives hw on them and the hw becomes a one question quiz. The information on the review is exactly on the test, but different wording. Easy class
The homework is difficult however he grades it accordingly. STUDY the reviews for the tests because they are the tests. He is very eccentric and quirky but overall a great professor. Take his class you wont be sory.
Didn't care for the class. Homework is the most difficult part and grades one question from homework based on the roll of a dice. Tests are easy because all questions come from a review sheet he hands out. How he interacts with students could make some feel somewhat uncomfortable, but a decent teacher overall. Takes attendance every class, show up!
The reading and homework was difficult but he goes over it and breaks it down so simply that you will get it. He gives reviews that are exactly like the test so study the review good and you will do well on the tests. He is quirky and I enjoyed taking the class. Easy A if you GO TO CLASS, take notes and do the homework/reading.
Great professor. If you pay attention in class, there's no reason as to why you wouldn't understand. Easy class, and he made it easier. Funny at times too
excellent professor. he covers all the homework and breaks it down in class. All material needed is on the reviews he gives out. I didn't buy the textbooks tho, used the rent a textbook in the library and did fine. If you don't want to read in class sit in front. (he chooses ppl who look distracted to read)
An absolutely amazing teacher that will stun you with the amount of things you will learn. Thank you Mr. Capistran.
Great Professor! Easy A! Well thats if you show up to class and do all the homework assignments! They are long but worth doing. He explains everything the next day and you get quizzed on them. The review is exactly like the test. Study the review get an A on the test. Super easy! Kind of hard at the beginning but then a piece of cake! Take him!!
Greatest professor ever! He explains everything so you can understand it. He makes weird faces but that's just his personality, hes awesome. Attend class and do the work and you are sure to pass.
Let me tell you how easy this class is and how lenient this man is. I was ill for the entire semester, diagnosed with multiple infections, and had potential cancer. I did all the busywork, read and tried my best to understand the material, and I failed to show up for the last two weeks of class and the final exam, yet I was given an A.
This guy is funny and quirky but He is a great teacher. Give him time and you'll warm up to him. He has a style of teaching thats different but it's good and you get to watch an anime in his class! But pay attention and come to class because its mandatory! Look over and memorize the review it'll make the test a piece of cake. But yeah he's great!
Take him!!! Readings can difficult, but he explains everything in lay man's terms. He is very organized. All tests receive a review sheet prior to, and everything you need to know is on review sheet. Very intriguing class and professor! Go to class, do work, and you will get an A!!
He is weird, but awesome. Just do the homework and youll pass with flying colors
He helps make this class interesting. I'm sure you'll never encounter a professor quite like him or a similar teaching style. But, that's a good thing. I'd recommend him to all my friends. His class is an easy A if you show up and just pay attention. Ask questions. You won't regret taking him, I took his logic class as well.
This is a very fun and easy class. The reviews for the test are everything you need to study for the test. He gives credit if answers are part right as well. Had a very good time made an A.
Great teacher
This was an interesting class. He is very laid back and chill. We watched 2 movies this semester. Even though he is a bit out there he is a good teacher. The only bad thing is he has a soft spoken voice so sometimes its hard to hear him. Is really picky about technology
Easy A!! Do your homework for quiz grade and he gives you Test review before each test! SO Easy! Go to class and you will pass! Doesn't get any easier than this! homework involves reading and answering questions! Test are exacting what is on test review! EASY A!!!!!!
Professor Capistran is a phenomenal teacher. The class was simple but interesting. If you take this course be prepared to do a good amount of outside reading and for quizzes over each assignment the next time class meets. As long as you do your work and participate, it's an easy A!
Took a 6wk summer course. Had 11 critical-thinking reading assignments for daily 1-question quizzes (he drops the lowest 3). Watched 2 movies in 3 days. Dismissed 1 day of class. He likes discussion. Gives full review sheets and heads up for tests. Final is comprehensive but easy.
not helpful. he makes you feel dumb if you do not answer the question correctly.
He is awesome, one of the best teacher ever. He is passionate about philosophy which makes the class interesting.
Awesome teacher, easy A if you do your homework. Tells you everything that will be on the test and final and goes over the essay question before starting the exam. He is passionate about philosophy so is happy to answer questions 10/10 class.
The Review is key! dont be late, dont take out your cell phone. very complicated teacher, and has no problem making you feel dumb. but easy enough class and Test. if you can ignore everything and just study the review you'll be ok
Very odd character, but definitely a smart whip! If you are going to take a philosophy class from anyone it should be him. Passionate about what he teaches. Not an easy A, but definitely gets you interested.
This was my first Philosophy class and I cannot pick any other professor other than Mr. Capistran to teach me. At first he was quiet, but trust me he can be loud and fun in lectures. Very good professor for Philosophy. If you are nervous and or doubting about Philosophy: take it with Mr. Capistran I HIGHLY recommend it.
If you don't like a TON of reading, find a new teacher. His homework assignments were very difficult, and during class he would give a roundabout correct answer. He's an interesting person, but he made quite a few students in my class feel stupid. The HW is difficult but the exams are quite easy if you study the exam review sheet. Okay teacher.
This class is difficult. If you want to get the A you will have to earn it. Dr. Capistran's class introduced me to a whole new universe of thinking. You will be challenged if you actually do the work and try to understand it. If you take everything from it, you will leave smarter.
Professor Capistran gives a lot of reading assignments, and the quiz for the assignment will be the following class (usually) the quiz is over one question from the assignment.. so not too bad. His test are easy, the study guide is just like the test and the class watches two movies in his class. Overall, it's pretty easy!
He's pretty good. For logic we had 4 tests & could retake them but the final is work 50% of the grade. He hates technology don't pull out laptop, phone, or kindle. Or if you retake a test he does through mail not internet which wastes time. He thinks we are only taking his class he needs to realize that we have other classes and jobs.
Prof. is funny, kind, and respectful. Class usually starts with a quick 1 question quiz, you are able to copy your answer straight from the homework assignment. Then a discussion on the homework. There is a good deal of reading and it can get intense but overall a great class. Plus we watched 2 really interesting movies.
Dr. Capistran made me want to become a Philosophy major! Very caring and respectful of students, very straightforward about what was required of us, extremely intelligent, and great communicator! Highly, highly recommend him! Easy A, yet very educational at the same time. Interesting class ... take it!
You have to read for quizzes . Quizzes do help you understand the lecture. Watch 2 great movies, which was a lot of fun. I didn't think I would like this class but this was my favorite one and I pass with an A. :D recommend this class. May seem hard at first but it will only get easier.
Makes philosophy interesting. Easy going. Teaches you how to read and think like the deep thinking philosophers. Gives a review sheet you memorize and viola "A" on all tests and final exam. He is so funny it makes taking this class a lot of fun
Expect to read A LOT! His homework assignments are very long & extremely hard to understand. I recommend using Sparknotes. He takes attendance everyday & calls on random people, so make sure to participate during the lectures. The quizzes are from the homework & the tests are almost exactly like the review sheet. All in all, it was an okay class.
MUST DO THE HW, they're the hardest thing you have to do in that class cause he gives quizzes on 1 of the questions and a LOT of reading. About 1013 quizzes are counted as 25% of your grade. He gives reviews which are basically the test, SUPER EASY. We watch Japanese films that are interesting. Interesting lectures! Doesn't allow technology use.
Gives lots of reading and sometimes kinda complex but thats for the homework which is for the quiz 1 question from the 10 question quiz test are straight from the review he gives doesn't like technology in his class, participation is a big role in grade and expect people to do their own work but funny guy interesting lectures would def take again!
Reading and doing homework are key because that information is covered on quizzes and tests but they are easy. GREAT reviews before tests and finals!! Very kind professor, loves philosophy, easy to listen to during lectures. Highly recommend!!
Lots of homework. Gives review sheets for tests.
Easy class, but be careful because he will accuse you of cheating if you even have 2 or 3 words similar to other people. Other than that. Very easy class
So he gives quizzes at the beginning of class if he'd given out homework the class before (easy if you read). He is truly passionate and funny. His study guides are clear cut & helpful with test. You can easily make an A+ in his class if you do what it is expected. Awesome teacher, I recommend him & will definitely take him again!
EASY class. Some reviews complain about the reading, but it isn't much. Usually it's 10pgs every week or 2 weeks, & you can use sparknotes or BS an answer. I skipped class a few times, but only on unimportant days (like movie days). Attendance is a grade. Tests are exactly like the reviews, so study for 30 minutes & you'll be fine.
Dr. Capistran is a very good professor. He really knows what he's talking about and makes class fun. BUT, be sure to read all assigned pages before class because he WILL call on you. A lot of reading and homework assignments but not too hard. I took 15 hours that semester so it was a little tough to fit all the reading in, but great overall.
I adore this professor! He gives wonderful lectures and you can tell that he cares about his students! He is rough around the edges when you first meet him, but he is amazing!!
Capistran was awesome! I didn't like him at first, but he warms up to you. Tests are super easy, I didn't even study for them until 30 min before and I've gotten 99 and 94. If there were anything negative I could say, it's that I don't like that he calls on people. I have social anxiety, so if you don't mind talking in front of people, ignore that!
An interesting professor. I loved the class even though it was EXTREMELY hard. He grades harshly and there is no room for procrastination, or slacking of any kind. Prepare for hours and hours of reading. Don't be afraid to ask questions and participate in class because he is good at clarifying and explaining things.
This guy is one of the most eccentric professors I've ever taken, and he is hilarious. That being said, his class is no easy A. The reading assignments are probably going to be a challenge and his quizzes are right up there with them. His tests are super easy as long as you study his review, so just focus on the content and you'll pass.
This class was a challenge for me mainly because philosophy is difficult for me to understand, BUT not impossible. He makes you do assignments before lecturing about the material, which took some getting used to. He is a wonderful professor and explains well. Quizzes on assignments are every week or so and 4 exam (do the reviews, they help a ton).
His reviews are EXACTLY like his exams. They are EXTREMELY long but they are everything you need to ace the class with ease. For the people in the comments who are saying it takes 30 minutes to review, they are lying. The reviews have ALOT of information that takes days to memorize. There are quizzes every week and the answers are on Sparknotes.
I took Capistran's intro to phil and am about to take him again for intro to logic. What an awesome guy! His course involves a lot of readings, but they are very interesting! The quizzes are all open note (based on reading homework) and tests are identical to review. He wants everyone to pass his class and always dismisses early. Great course!
I enjoyed Prof. Capistran's class. You just read the book & answer some questions about what you just read. Tests are exactly like the reviews. Super easy class. Mr. Capistran is really nice as well and is very knowledgeable when it comes to philosophy.
i loved this class. everyone always says that philosophy was super hard but he makes it easy to understand so long as you keep an open mind. READ THE BOOKS
This was my overall easiest class. I struggled at first with the homework but after the first one, I never made a grade below an 88. Participation matters but its easy stuff. He won't make you do it if you don't want to. 3 test and 10 quizzes the question comes from your homework and you just copy the answer. I recommend this class 100% easy A.
Just show up to class, read all the hw, fill out the questions and its a smooth sailing, easy A class.
This professor has been my favorite out of all of my professors. The tests and homework is pretty simple as long as you read. The long answer questions on the tests are pretty important, but other than that he's a really nice guy. He's a cute nerd that plays Princess Mononoke and rolls a D10 for the homework questions. He makes me want to learn.
Really easy patient guy. I struggled for the first couple of weeks but he does want to help and hes willing to work with you. Hes a cute nerd. I really enjoyed the class
Gives great lectures and dives straight into detail when a question is asked which is great because I know everyone had the exact question in mind every single time. Has an insane amount of patience if youre on the slower side of the spectrum. Not an easy class but if you study and read youll pass. Great example of what a teacher should be!
I enjoyed this class a lot! one of my favorites. He is happy to sit down and discuss topics with you. He seemed a little rough at the start of the semester but he's definitely one of my favorites. Show up and do your homework and it's an easy A.
Probably the best teacher i've had at Lone Star so far. He's very respectful, and as long as you read, and study for the tests, his class isn't hard. He makes learning philosophy interesting, and the reviews are exactly like the tests, which is very helpful. When class converted to online because of COVID, he was very helpful.
You have to show up, you have to read the work and he expects participation. He gives good lectures and notes to help you understand. Do the work and pass.
Only quizzes and tests based on weekly readings, all done through email. I bought the books but never used them, he sends reading along with assignments. Goes over the subjects after the assignments to explain meanings, which helps. Overall exactly what I thought a philosophy professor would be.
Textbooks are SO hard to understand. Sometimes it's hard to hear him. I do not think he explains the text amazingly but just enough to understand. Hw is very frustrating bc of the difficult text. But tests are EASY. He gives out the test review (answer key basically). There's a lot of short answer responses. He wants participation in class.
Professor Capistran was such a great professor! It takes a week or two to get used to his personality. You could tell he was truly passionate about the subject matter. He changed my outlook on philosophy completely. Make sure you read your book and do your homework. Also use the study guide for the test - it gives you all the answers!
8wk course. Easy A if you read the 6 pages he gives you and dont plagiarize. Dont buy the book, he sent out PDFs for everything. He doesnt used d2l so you just fill in the answers on a word doc and email it back. Mid term review was practically an answer key, I got 98%
Entire class done through email, no D2L. Only quizzes and tests, he basically gives you the answers to the test. Quizzes are 10 questions and he sends PDFs of the readings. DONT BUY THE BOOK, you dont need it. He is an easy professor, very respectful. Just do the quizzes and youll pass. He only grades one question out of the entire quiz.
Class was done through email which wasnt bad. You have homework due every week, and he only grades 1 question out of 10. I wasnt a fan of that because you didnt know which one he was grading and it was a lot of work for only 1 question. Exams were very easy, exactly like the review. Kinda a tough grader for homework. I would recommend.
I took this class in a 8 week semester. There is a fair amount of work. Honestly the hardest part was just understanding the readings but I think that is just philosophy itself.
I took this class in a 8 week time. The class has a fair amount of work. The hardest part was understanding the reading but, I think that is just overall philosophy.
Philosophy is a tough subject. The literature is challenging and hard to understand. Thankfully, the professor is kind and will explain things if you need help. If I had reached out more I wouldnt have been as confused. The quizzes are difficult, but he drops the lowest 3 grades. I would take him again. He knows his stuff.
Philosophy was a difficult online for me but Professor Capstrain provided videos to help explain each assignment. He is easy going and communicates well! He follows the syllabus outline. Get ready to read. There were 8 quizzes, a mid-term, then final. He will drop the 3 of the lowest quiz grades! Thank goodness! Would take him again!
I don't know if it was just my class, but he would just give us a reading, make us do questions, then grade it, and THEN lecture us about it afterwards. His tests are extremely easy though, but I know I could've gotten more from this class. I was excited when signing up. I can tell he's intelligent and kind, just wish there was more to learn
When I first heard about him I thought I would be receiving a great professor, but all I got was an internet whiteboard. All this professor does is post both texts and questions together, and makes the questions using different wording from both text and textbooks. His prerecorded lessons are only available weeks after the questions are submitted.
This prof has about 12 homework assignments and each is 10 questions, but he only grades it by one question so it's a lot of work to be only graded by one question. his tests are easy, one one chapter test and the final exam was 30 questions, and they are just like the review. a lot of reading for the hw but it was easy.
Philosophy is a complicated subject, but Capistran is really great at explaining it and helping you think critically about it. I recommend reading it twice before class and once after class. He's got a good sense of humor, and also takes the time to go over non-eurocentric schools of thought. lots of quizzes, but he's a generous grader.
To me, teachers that rely on dropping your 3 lowest quiz grades and giving you a super specific review to memorize before tests are horrible. I was excited to take this class before but dreaded going lecture because he made them so incredibly boring and hard to follow, the only reason to go is to take the quiz so you can pass.
He's a very caring and polite professor. There was only one assignment due a week and his tests weren't proctored. He took awhile to grade sometimes and give you feedback. His assignments were hard to understand sometimes, but if you try he will pass you. Not a very hard class if you just do the assignments and tests!
He's the best! Very patient. Just email him and ask any question he will help. I would definitely take him again.
Good professor. Phil is a tough subject, but he always clarifies your mistakes when grading and supplies adequate reviews for exams. His class schedule and materials are very organized, and it makes it easy to follow assignments. The assignments are generally a reading and questions, so there are no complicated instructions.
You will read... ALOT. But it is all extremely interesting. You HAVE to keep up with the homework assignments or else the class will be extremely difficult to finish. He is very nice when it comes to grading, and can tell if you are trying in the class or not.
A very polite, respectful, and soft-spoken teacher. Pros: smaller classes, fun discussions & deep topics, only 10 questions every week for the chapter, if you're ever confused just ask him and he will gladly help! Cons: lots of reading, must be interested in the topic, 3 exams all about what is on the study guide, if you understand and try = an A!
He takes your worst grades in quizzes and replaces them with better ones. It's a lot of reading but they are very interesting and he plays movies that are great and they also help with understanding the material, yet this class is very easy even if you aren't interested in the material. It's almost hard not to pass.
Dr. Capistran is a grest professor! He's super knowledgeable about his field. He always encourages participation and wants everyone to share their thoughts about the subject. Homework in the class is easy but can be time-consuming because there's a lot of reading. Tests are easy if you study.
The professor is knowledgeable and makes the material engaging. While there's a lot of reading, the assignments and tests are manageable with consistent effort. Using Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the workload.
Dr. Capistran Is a very knowledgeable man. His quizzes are very easy, and you can use your notes to answer the pop quiz you will have one every day, but he made it enjoyable, and he was just very helpful and gave you THE BEST REVIEWS TO PASS. Each Review you should study them because all three will be combined and that will be your FINAL!!!
One of if not the best teachers I've ever had
