This IS the worst prof I have ever had. The material he uses for labs are not his own, he takes others labs & makes them more confusing (makes you try to guess what formula he wants you to use). If you get something wrong, he puts "ask for online chat". Tons of homework, His notes are from the publisher. Busy work making tables DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!
He marked me wrong for naming the file name wrong and it was his fault- 5pt deduction off lab. Knight book is hard to follow as well. He had access to course evaluations b4 class was even done and grades were posted- take someone else!
Michael gives 10-14pg lab directions, which are very confusing what is wanted, especially the conclusions. Also for the lab final, he changed the format (made it worth 3x more than other labs) and didn't not show us the grading rubric, then graded us down for things that were accepted all semester long. The class should be graded on phy not excel.
So, during the first labs you had a tiff because the labs were filled-in--like a template. Now you are having a tiff because the labs are NOT being merely filled-in but written as a report--like you requested. From coloring the charts to exact filenames and now this. I can't wait to see what your course evaluations are going to be like.
Unprofessional
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! The worst experience Ive ever had with a professor.I got several rude emails from him and I had to correct him 3-4 times on my grade. If you ask him a question he answers with a question- very confusing. After you get something wrong and it is graded then he will show you how to do it. Hours of work following tedious directions.
Mr.Carney is extremely hard to understand....the lab directions are very lengthy and tedious. He answers questions with questions, which makes the material even more confusing. He is meticulous when it comes to grading. Be prepared to spend A LOT of time on this material!
Online course: the attendance was not mandatory. Mostly self paced but there were deadlines. The software used was sometimes hard to understand or did not work the way I thought it would but still received an A so it was easy enough.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. I took him for physics I as well. His labs are ridiculously long, tedious, and hard and he grades however he feels. I did stuff on labs all last semester and got like 20 points taken off my lab for the same thing this semester. Horrible professor. if you take his class be prepared to do a lot of work
The worst online professor I have ever had. Every negative review on this page is 100% accurate. I have taken multiple classes online before and this was my worst expirence by far. The emphasis of the class is NOT Physics. His course is obviously designed to make his grading process easiest for him at the expense of effectivly learning physics.
Most of the assignments have long, tedious directions and don't pertain to actual physics. So if you're thinking of taking this class... let me think for you. Don't take it. Save yourself the stress. Just don't. Watching something on youtube would be more helpful. Good day.
Carney does not care about teaching physics. All he cares about is formatting. He makes the work easy for himself. A truly horrible and infuriating professor. Way too much busy work.
I really do NOT like this man. He is rude and sarcastic and males you feel stupid. But to those who had him, whats her curve look like at the end? I feel like I should have a B in this class but I have a D. I need a C! Does he give a big curve?
He is the worst professor I've ever had in my 4 years of college. His directions on assignments are confusing and extremely specific. I could get the answers to questions right, but get more points off due to formatting. If you ask him a question, he tells you that it's very straightforward and you should be able to figure it out. DON'T TAKE HIM.
He was by far the worst professor I have ever had. He was beyond rude whenever you would ask a question, and he would never actually answer it. The instructions to labs were 10+ pages long and if you did not follow them exactly, he would take off insane amounts of points. He is a horrible professor, and this was a horrible class. DO NOT TAKE!!
The worst professor I have ever had. The class is not focused on physics, but on formatting. The labs are long and insanely tedious. Exams are simple but count for little in comparison to the labs and homework. Needed a C to transfer my credit and he gave me a C- and wouldnt budge, despite getting 85+ on all exams. Avoid this man if possible.
Objectively makes this class a nightmare. Worries more about Microsoft Excel and formatting rather than physics itself. Instructions are extremely lengthy and difficult to follow.
Professor Carney often has typos in the lab instructions, which he will fix days before its due and ask the class to redownload it once its fixed. For the labs, it is easy to have the correct answers but get several points taken off for things like plot size, x and y-axis fonts, etc. Formatting instructions are very lengthy and specific. HW is easy
I took physics 2 online w/Carney. The class has 6 unit tests and a final, about 2 HW every week, and 4 labs total. The HW you can find the answers online, but the tests are not anywhere, not even chegg. He has no instruction videos, just tells you to read the (free) textbook to teach urself, which is super hard w physics. Other reviews r accurate.
Course was entirely online. The professor states, and truly believed, you should be spending AT LEAST 3-4 hours per day, 6 days a week on this class. The labs had formatting requirements the likes of which I have never seen even in high school and would never pass in a professional setting. However, the professor is very willing to help if you ask.
PHY152 at FLCC is no easy way to complete a physics prerequisite. Despite this, Professor Carney is readily available and will respond to questions and provide feedback within 24 hours, nearly 7 days a week. You will be asked to do a lot, though the tools are there to be successful. He enables students to be successful! Would do it with him again!
He structures online classes well with weekly tasks. He says it will take time and effort and he isn't lying. Put in the time and you will do fine. I completed every assignment but never read the textbook and didn't study besides doing the practice exams and received a B+. Follow all lab instructions and you get an A on the Lab.
Prof. Carney is an excellent professor who really cares about the success of his students! He makes himself readily available via email and is super helpful. Physics 2 is challenging, especially when taken online but Prof. Carney provides a schedule for the class that makes the work manageable. I definitely recommend his class!
Yes the course demands a lot of work and time but it's realistic given that it's a whole semester crammed into 5 weeks. It's very doable to those that are hard workers. The professor always makes himself available to help and the class is very straightforward. If you don't do well in this class then it's on you.
I took physics 152 online with Professor Carney (the 4 week session) and while it was a lot of work, he was very helpful. He responded very quickly to all my questions and lead students in the right direction to getting the answer to a problem. He also does not require you to get the physics lab kit because there is only one lab which is awesome!
The Professor is good at explaining materials and maintain frequent contacts with students for this online course. He is very helpful about the process of course and kind. Highly recommended!
The course itself takes up a lot of your time, however the professor is helpful and encourages you to do well. The labs are very detailed and nit-picky but you will do well if you follow his videos and instructions. He is not kidding when he says you have to spend at least 3-4 hours on the work every day, but overall manageable.
The course itself takes up a lot of your time, however the professor will answer your questions and provide helpful responses. The labs are very detailed and the professor expects a lot from them, but the instructions are clearly laid out, and questions are answered quickly and clearly. You will spend a lot of time on homework, but it will pay off
I took Physics 119 over the Summer online with Professor Carney. The class was structured well. There was readings, homework, and tests due every Wednesday and Sunday nights. He would post what was due every week with a recommended pacing schedule which was helpful. Professor Carney was responsive to E-mails and very helpful. Would recommend.
I'm in the middle of taking this online & it's been the worst class I've ever taken online. I've taken online classes through my uni & done excellent. There are pages of instructions & you're opening up 10 other different files/videos with more instructions on how to do the assignment. Also will give you a bad grade for not follow his exact steps.
Do not take this class! He is the most ridiculous professor I have ever had to deal with. He is downright rude, tells you to ask for help and then doesn't answer your questions. All the negative reviews for him are accurate. It is obvious on 8/12/19 he wrote the 9 good reviews himself to make himself feel better. Horrible, rude person!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!. Never in my four years of attending college have I written one of these for a professor however, i feel that it will help perspective students. One lab assignment consist of 10-12 pages of work explaining what to do with no clear instructions on how to do it. He doesn't help AT ALL tells you to watch his 40 minute video.
Completely discouraging and the most disrespectful professor I've had. Condescending and useless when asking for assistance. Lab assignments are not intuitive with confusing instructions. Continuously insults and belittles students and expects them to ask him for help. He seemingly cares more about formatting word documents than physics. Stay away.
The teacher is ridiculous. I have never felt bullied or disrespected by a professor as I have with him. He is good about answering emails quickly, but the responses are not helpful. He has incredibly high expectations and ridicules you when your not perfect. His class is unorganized and trying to find the work is like going in a scavenger hunt.
!!!AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS!!! Within the first week of class, I had emailed him asking a question about the blackboard as the way he organizes it is a bit confusing, and this man INSULTED ME and was offended because he thought I was making fun of him. Been rude to me ever since. No lectures; Only useless PowerPoint slides that teach nothing.
Professor Carney worked in the "field" and is very technical when it comes to labs as a result, which is good for STEM students. The class is very demanding, and you need to put the effort into it as a result. It is a lot of confusing readings, but IF you ask for help, Professor Carney will try to help you learn the material. Responds to emails.
Professor Carney is very picky with how he wants things to be completed. However, he describes his expectations with full detail. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine. He gives you all the resources you need to do well and elaborately explains why you received a certain grade.
This guy is on a major power trip. I think he'd rather be a dictator of a small country than a physics professor. Do you like condescending men who insult you via email every week? Then congrats, this is the right class for you!
Doesn't really teach. Really have to read the book and figure stuff out by yourself. Super picky about how labs are formatted and cares more about formatting than the actual lab. Organized pacing schedules nice at least.
Be careful, the labs focus more on Format the the actual lab results. Points are taken off left and right for tiny, and I mean tiny details.
I dropped his class the second week. This man is extremely rude. His emails are extremely inappropriate and he loves to talk down to you. I had to get out, he is EXTREMELY picky when grading his formatted lab. I've NEVER had such frustration trying to follow any professor's directions. His blackboard page is a mess. Please take it somewhere else.
Don't even remotely consider taking a class with this professor unless you're in perhaps a literal life and death situation. There's very little actual teaching done. Much of his grading standards are extraordinarily absurd and particular. His assignment instructions are often horribly explained. He is rude and condescending. Stay away.
Professor Carney makes the course reasonable knowing how difficult it is. Multiple hw assignments, few labs and 5 tests with a practice test for each one that is very similar to the actual test. If you do the work you will get a good grade. The intro assignments will feel overwhelming but are very easy once you begin.
This is more of a formatting class than a physics class. He wastes a lot of time telling you how he wants labs formatted, but puts up youtube videos about physics instead of lecturing himself. He's condescending, rude, and tell you how bad you're all doing via a weekly shame email. Please don't take him, you won't learn anything.
He emailed me asking to write him a good review. I can guarantee everyone who wrote positive reviews also received the same email. This professor was a very harsh grader and cared more about word and excel formatting than physics. 15 points were taken off because my chart lines were thick and not semi thick. Choose a different professor.
Despite probably 50% of his students being online, he leans very heavily on traditional lecture formats. This means that online students who work full time have to drag home and listen to hours of video full of dad jokes and irrelevant ramblings. He gives ZEROS on major exams due to minor formatting issues. Avoid FLCC online if you have a life
Michael Carney is a very knowledgeable professor that is perhaps a bit passive-agressive and a stickler on formatting. If you're a bit on the sensitive side (like myself) sometimes he will come off as looking down upon students though truly in his heart he only means well. If you are at least remotely able to look past that and TRY give him a shot
He focused on his formatting criteria more than the actual physics, had poor organization of Blackboard and sends passive-aggressive emails. He should be looking at these reviews to improve, but instead is asking students to leave positive reviews because he "believes the profile that has developed for him over the years is decidedly slanted".
Avoid this professor at all costs. All the negative reviews are accurate. He couldn't care less about helping, but everyday he sends long emails that do not amount to anything. I asked for help and all I got was condescension. Unprofessional. I would never take this Professor again and if I had to, I would transfer to a different school. Seriously
Professor Carney is a tough grader. He is knowledgeable, available when you need to reach him and obviously an expert in the field. Could use a little work when communicating via email, but all in all his class is a challenge that requires paying attention to the little details. May come off a little condescending.
This professor is what a student needs to be successful. He isn't going to spoon feed someone answers, he states that right from the start. He will guide you to the answers, and consistently provide the support you need. This teacher cares about his students. He wouldn't keep such a solid line of communication if he didn't. I'm grateful I had him.
Available often to help even as far as Christmas Day in my case. Grade on this cite is a shame representation of who Michale Carney is. A great teacher who spend much of his time helping students succeed. The picture of what a teacher should be. Understanding and committed dont do him justice.
Don't hesitate to ask for help; it's your responsibility as a student to work hard to overcome challenges. Learning these concepts helps you! Utilize his style and get the most out of this course! He clearly knows Java inside and out and is detail oriented. I would take any course he offers! You will benefit greatly from his feedback!!!
Some are seemingly offended that he mentions his disappointment when students make the same errors repeatedly. However, everything that one needs is in the textbook/videos, and he is accessible via e-mail or videoconference. I do not understand why a student would dislike this professor, but my prior Java experience may effect my point of view.
I was going to give him a 1, but I figured that I would give him a 2 in order to even out the scales for all the blatantly fake reviews he gives himself. I took Physics 2, and he grades his labs horribly. For some reason, formatting of the lab counts for about 70% of the grade. Carney, stop trying to gripe for good ratings, just be a better prof.
only cares about formatting not content rude emails wordy directions and everything you need is a million different folders i didn't learn a thing... if you actually want to know physics don't take this class and season depression truly make you question your will to live
This class did NOT feel introductory at all. We were taught concepts that felt way too advanced for students who are programming for the very first time. When we reached out to the professor for assistance we were just met with a copy-paste of the initial assignment instructions. I would type more but the type limit is restricting.
Horrible online professor and communicator. Maybe good in person because he is knowledgeable and passionate about programming. Syllabus said projects post at least 3 days ahead - in reality given only 1.5 to 2 days and ALWAYS on the weekend. Also he just sent me an email asking to give him a 5/5 review on this site because we had good rapport
If other students are coming in like myself, with no knowledge of programming at all, it can be easy to get discouraged. He did warn us that the class would be very fast paced. Trust this warning, and use the materials is the best advice I can give. He will help if you ask for help, but if you don't ask then you're just going to be out of luck.
Do not recommend!!! Absolutely horrible, all he cares about is format rather than actually teaching. Passive aggressive over emails. Overall 0/10
My worst experience at FLCC by far after two years full time. This prof absolutely doesnt want students to be successful. Unreasonable expectations not related to physics at all. Overly particular about everything including how you email him a question or send a photo. He sends out dramatic and rude emails weekly about participation. Drop now
Professor Carney sets his standards and makes it clear what he wants, but his standards are asinine. Specifically he does not make quiz questions available for review, so we can't learn from our mistakes. He is often unavailable and slow to answer emails during an online course, and when he does respond he is generally unprofessional and unhelpful.
The professor has clear guidelines on how to get good grades, but the class teaches you how to format your assignments formally, not physics. On top of his passive aggressive emails, he is very strict on formatting and is ready to give you a bad grade even if your calculations are correct. Would not take his class ever again.
Carney is unreasonable. Online PHYS course: no lectures, no course content besides assignments, most designed to see if students can follow arbitrary instructions & play his games. Rubric includes NEGATIVE point values. Don't need physics for this "class". Most points from formatting nonsense, and a prof who thinks too highly of himself. Avoid!
This class kicked off easily, however on the 3rd week of college Professor Carney overwhelmed me with lots of work and expected me to turn the work in by the due date, which was either the next day. I asked for helped and he gave me help however, he barely answered my problems for the assignment! I will never take this professor ever again for CS!
Carney is one to avoid wherever possible. His near daily, condescending emails do nothing but discourage anyone who might be struggling. I did pretty decent but I had prior knowledge of the content, I would always read his emails feeling bad for those he is talking about. You could write a fully-functional program but get near 0% due to formatting.
Michael Carney...where to even begin. With passive aggressive emails all the way down to how he wants things formatted and his OCD kicking into the max this man has made me overthink my existence and the will to live. He makes it almost impossible to learn anything by handing out assignments totaling to 40+ hours a week... full time job with no pay
I don't mind strict, but Carney is something else entirely. Multiple students received a deficient grade on the first submission, for something as little as an extra underscore in the file name, even when the work was worthy of an A. He then displayed the projects to everyone, picking apart every minor reason it was wrong. He continues this still.
Michael was one of the worst professors I have ever dealt with, he will nitpick you on everything you do, as well as send the most annoying emails every day. Do not take a class with him it's not worth your time.
The way that this course was run, the organization of the class, and Professor Carney's availability were all great factors of this course. All the assignments for this class were laid out and accessible from the start. We were also given a pacing schedule that helped with time management. Professor Carney responds to emails quickly, even at night.
What I really appreciated was the ability of Professor Carney to make adjustments on the fly and allow us all to be able to learn but also cause the least amount of stress as possible while taking this course. While it felt like there were a lot of mixed emotions at the beginning, there was an ability to allow everyone the opportunity to succeed.
I was able to learn skills and techniques that will be useful in the real world outside of physics. I appreciated how the professor stayed up late to answer any questions I had and he was able to help me. Also, i appreciated how there were no unit exams , it allowed me to learn the material and have more time to understand it.
His timely emails and flexibility in accepting late submissions were a huge relief for me. His guidance and feedback on specific topics were immensely helpful. I believe things could have gone much worse for me without his assistance.
He made physics online a lot less daunting. He cared about how well you were doing & was mindful of how stressed/busy you could get. He was very lenient with late work& would answer emails at late hours, making him always available to help. I learned a lot of the physics material bc I wasn't stressed about grades/deadlines, just putting in work
He is generally very lenient with regards to letting us redo old assignments and submit assignments past their due dates. He replies to emails quickly. Labs and Assignments are relatively straightforward too.
Would suggest taking professor carney again for physics!
You were so thoughtful and understanding about my situation and were able to accommodate to my needs. Your students best interest seemed to be your main concern. You are always available if there was a question to be asked about an assignment.
He is arrogant and belittling. My email started populating him into the spam folder because of how often he sends them. His assignments are excessively frequent and the expectations are regularly contradicted. Genuinely feels like the grading rubric changes based on his mood. 0/10 Would not recommend.
Ridiculous. His teaching strategy is to overload you with too many buzz words and provide unrealistic coursework that doesn't teach you anything useful for the real world. How he lays out specifications for work is so unbelievably annoying to read that it WILL affect your grade. Failure of a teacher and I didn't even take his course.
He is severely homophobic and used my deadname after everyone including the principal discussed how he needs to call me by my actual name.
He is absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had, He constantly makes all the girls in class uncomfortable by touching them weirdly and calling them weird names like "Baby girl". I would not recommend taking his class at all.
The structure of the class is unbearable. I have taken prior tedious courses but Professor Carney takes it to a whole new level. The rude, inappropriate and condescending emails really suck the life out of you, especially if you are one of the students on the struggling side of his class. -10/10. I would NEVER recommend.
The negative ratings are true. Please avoid this man at all costs. This class did not feel introductory at ALL!
The professor was confusing from how he grades. Along with not being much of any help when it comes to asking questions and having no web ex, zoom, or anything where I'd get better help. As it makes me feel like he's the one failing me instead, make sure to have a friend to help you out and give better feedback on instead of him.
What kind of professor uses a person's deadname? And is so, SO FREAKING disrespectful to the students? He has the nerve to not only make fake positive reviews of themselves on here, but have the nerve to think that they're above us students? Honestly, it's like they just WANT us to fail in life. Do not take this professor at all.
This feels like a case of, it isn't the class itself being difficult but rather the teacher being difficult.
Making another review, this man is so difficult to work with that god forbid giving anyone extra time if you're someone who struggles with motivation, executive dysfunction, or even neurodivergent in general, his feedback makes no sense still "wrong println" and never say what's the correct one, a toddler could give me better feedback than him.
Terrible...
You can really tell how much Professor Carney wants his students to be successful. Each assignment has extremely detailed instructions and grading criteria. He grades quickly, provides thorough feedback, and is very welcoming to questions - ask them! He creates an active learning environment that puts students in the driver's seat. Would recommend!
This class is definitely hard but the professor cares about his students and tries to give daily reminders and sometimes some hints that will help with the assignment. This can be annoying at times but it shows he cares. This class requires a lot of time and patience and the grade really reflects the time you put in.
Prof Carney gives you the tools to be successful in this course. He is always available for questions and usually responds very fast. He is a tough grader, but once you get the hang of his formatting you can get a good grade. Take the practice exams and youll be fine on the real exams. If you put in the work youll get a good grade.
the class is a lot of work, but the professor is very helpful and accessible outside of class.
If you have questions does not help you. Very condescending and grades super hard.
Doesn't feel like an introductory coding class. It's more so based upon your luck with formatting and adhering to an essay long instructions list. Deadlines were too quick, sometimes having 3 labs in a week. So, grading felt quite unfair and confusing. Communication was difficult and often passive aggressive through the daily announcements.
This "introduction class" is anything but one. This class is quite literally near impossible to anyone who doesn't have previous knowledge of coding. Strict grading, absolutely 0 late work accepted, you're set up for failure if you aren't willing to bend to his standards immediately. I would avoid FLCC for CS because of his required course alone.
An introduction class that is set up for experienced programmers. I would not recommend this professor if you never programmed in your life or are a beginner. Strict grading, simple formatting mistakes can lower an assignment's grade a full letter. Very unhelpful when asking for help, sends almost daily passive aggressive or smug announcements.
I was a previous student of Professor Carney my Sophomore year. I had finished one of my quizzes for one of his electives he offered and he had graded it and left a comment which read. “Should be better.” WTF!!!!!! Super unprofessional. Do better.
I genuinely hated taking his class, he was extremely vague with every instruction, and generally very creepy towards other students, I would heavily not recommend him especially with him being pretty rude at times
Introductory class that's surprisingly difficult. Professor has very strict grading and zero late work. If you're not an experienced coder, this may not be the class for you. Unstuck ai helped with study prep, but going to office hours is a must.
He is annoying
