BBOOORRING!!!
I enjoyed his classes, although the books that he had us read were very boring. However, I always learned a lot while in his class. He's a really nice guy too.
REALLY hard grader, but a wonderful teacher. I knew how to write papers before I took the class, but I REALLY knew how to write afterwards. Expect to work hard and spend LONG hours writing papers, but you'll get a lot out of it. Slackers, stay away!

Very hard grader, but very entertaining in class. Very helpful with writing! But you know what he expects - ALOT.
Carter is a great teacher - he takes a required class and makes it fun and interesting. He asks difficult questions in class and encourages discussion, which seems to throw off some people. Take him if you like quirky, intelligent teachers.
I am still amazed that he can fit in the same room with his ego.
To this day I'm amazed how the incredible weight of his own failures refuses to personify itself physically. A bitter old weasel of a man, it's astounding that the gravitational field created by his own ego hasn't sucked him into another dimension.
Good teacher, easy to get along with. He grades really hard and be prepared to work. If you go to every class and read the required readings, you should be able to get a B. No extra credit opportunities.
very good, very smart, very funny, very interesting, very very
When writing a paper in his class, write about topics that go against anything normal in society that you can think of and he will like it. His classes were long, boring, and not entertaining. Beware!
Great teacher - best 104 english class you can take. Makes it interesting and fun. Watched music videos/Simpsons for research IN CLASS. Big points for participating in class.
He is horrible, he is mean and would try and make girls in my class cry. I would suggest staying away from him!!
I really liked the class. He was funny, and I liked the discussions brought up in class. Yes, he required you to work, but that's fine. He wasn't as bad (I don't think) as some people portray him to be.
Wow This guys is so dry .........he need hypothetical lotion!!
Great teacher and very helpful. She makes sure that you get the concept down and is very accessible if you have any trouble. sometimes she'll send you e-mails just because she's bored.
Carter is an awesome guy! His class seemed hard at first but I definetly learned a ton! Definetly take this guy! Not to mention he had a goatee down to his chest when I had his class!
Great teacher, I hate english, but he made it interesting and fun. This discussions were great. I learned a ton in that class, I highly recommend him.
This guy was quite a character. The class discussion rarely went far off topic, and the class was focused. I just retook eng104 with him and it was a lot better than the first round. He is always available for help. Although eccentric, he helped us all be better writers.
Prof Carter was an outstanding teacher. I got a lot out of his class. He wants you to learn and you do have to put forth a lot of effort, but its worth it. I highly recommend him!
I learned more in this class then any other that ive taken. I know I am a better writer then I was! I thought his class was going to be really hard, but as long as you do what he asks, hes a very very fair grader. Im taking him again for my 2 teir course!
This guy is very hard and gave a basketball player with a 4.0 a B and ruined his GPA
he's aight
I had him for English 104 my first semester in college... his class was incredible hard for me and should not have taken it so seriously... i mean it is just english right??
Amazing teacher, he made me (a math major) interested in English! That's impressive. If you do what he asks you will do fine. But this class is not for slackers.
ok class
This teacher was not for me. Took it in my 4th semester. This has been my only B my college career. I had a 4.0 beforehand. I just really couldn't get his style and what more he wanted out of our papers. I stressed out so much over this class because nothing was ever good enough.
Great professor, but demanding.
This is an interesting class focusing on controversial issues found in literature. Warning: If your opinion does not agree with his opinion you won't get your point across out loud in class so unless you want to shout, just drop the class or get used to being quiet.
I loved this class. Interesting topic (controversial and banned texts) which prompted some great discussions. A shame more class members didn't participate in the discussions though. MWC held a lively, thought-provoking class and was always willing to talk through ideas outside of class. Be prepared to talk, work hard and think outside the box.
Professor Carter is an awful, unfair teacher.
The class itself is pretty boring but you are going to get that with any ENG 104 class. If you go to Carter for help he will tell you exactly what he wants. I got an A on my first paper because I put in the time and met with him outside of class.
A lot of people on here have been giving him a bad wrap, and it freaked me out before I took this class. Carter's not a bad guy at all. He's actually a really nice guy, and pretty goofy too. In terms of difficulty, yes, he pushes you. But in return you become a better writer. I recommend him. Not an easy class, but a good professor.
Carter will push you but he will also help. He's always available to meet with and knows what good writing is and how to teach it. I've had him for two classes and enjoyed both immensely. He is a bit nutty and thrives off class participation. He likes creative topics for papers and may let you go off the syllabus if you ask.
I have taken both 104 and 232 with Prof. Carter, and it's probably the easiest B you will ever get, but don't have huge high hopes for that A. You learn a lot during any class you take with him, and he loves participation. He's so nice in office hours too, don't be afraid of speaking up.
This teacher could be great or terrible. He grades relatively hard, but if you engage in class, the actual class will be your favorite. He always does something funny every class, and is very entertaining.
Horrible!! So many people from my section dropped his class because no one liked him. He was very opinionated and made some people, including myself, feel uncomfortable and irritated. He was unreasonable and not at all helpful.
Professor Carter is the best. He's absolutely nuts, but is completely fascinating. I loved his course and he was really relaxed during conversation. As long as you do the reading and contribute in class, you'll do well.
Carter is unique. That's the one word to describe him, but it's certainly in a good way. He's a hilarious professor that's incredibly laid back, but also has a passion to see his students learn. Carter gave me an an admiration for Steinbeck, and I truly wish I could take more of his classes.
Bring your pillow to class because you will want to sleep through Carter's lectures. He can be funny at times, but overall I think he's just sarcastic and arrogant.
Super easy. Show up, do the homework. Participate. Easy A.
The class was about vampires so obviously the pop culture aspect alone was incredibly interesting. We worked on creating a website. We wrote papers;& discussed a plethora of interesting aspects of the origins, motifs, and characteristics of vampires. Not only was the class fun, but he was also a great guy who gave people breaks they didn't deserve.
I really enjoyed this class. Michael asked us to read quite a bit, but the grading wasn't too hard and you can get away with not reading everything. I read about half of the material and worked hard. Definitely take advantage of the fact that he is willing to proofread major assignments before you turn them in. Quizzes in here were sometimes tough.
Carter was full of interesting information. The class is about controversial works of art and it can be a bit boring at times. You must read the books because he expects you to participate and answer questions. The books aren't expensive, so this class will save you some money as well.
If you can, take him! He's such a brilliant man who truly cares if his students understand what he's teaching. He expects a lot out of his students but is very good at breaking down exactly what he wants from you. Although there was a LOT of reading, it was all very interesting!
Dr. Carter is an outstanding teacher and friend. He was very helpful throughout the semester. His class was a time to break out of your shell and talk with your classmates. He is very driven and wants you to do well. There is a lot of reading, but it is enjoyable and interesting.
Carter is a great professor! If you appreciate literature, you'll love his lectures!!
Carter is not profound by any means. He neglects delving into the plot and shuns deep analysis of literature. While he is good for a laugh or empty comment or pointless tangent, he is absent of any depth regarding literature. If you want to analyze and understand Cooper, expect a 20 minute YouTube video of Mark Twain criticizing Cooper instead.
He is a very laid-back professor and easy to get along with. He's very understanding if you have to miss class or you forgot to bring an assignment - just email him. There was 1 test - the midterm - and it was very straightforward. We read more than anything but the books were enjoyable. VERY easy class, very enjoyable professor.
Professor Carter is not a good professor. His lectures have no meaning and every class I think to myself "what is the point of this?" In no way have I become a better writer, and his TA grade very hard for no reason. Not recommended.
His lectures are absolutely pointless by no means am I a "better writer" than i was before.
WORST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN. They treat this 100 level elective like you are an English major. I never received a 100 on anything in this class and the class is only out of 100 points total, so literally every point matters. His lectures make no sense and the mid-term is very tedious. Wouldn't recommend.
Definitely an enjoyable class! I would take it again in a heartbeat. You write two papers and some poems. You get graded on them, and get very clear and distinct feedback. You just revise those and turn them in for a portfolio at the end of the semester. There is readings, but they are enjoyable and worth while! HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10.
The lectures are very boring and pointless. I learned nothing in lecture. He just babbles the whole class and makes pointless assignments. I only went to class because he took attendance but I will take him again because he is a very very easy grader and has a open mind when grader. The midterm was kind of tough to.
He is such a gem. He is extremely intellectual and knows his stuff. I don't see why his rating isn't higher. He's good with every student, puts in a lot of effort to get us to talk, and is really funny. I will say he pushes you, but a good prof will do that.
Great professor. Really funny and willing to be generous. Also wants you to succeed.
Mr. Carter was a bit old fashioned (did not use PP, but rather pieces of paper he held up for us). I took the class after taking much higher writing classes (I just needed one more and it was the only option). From this position, I found this class to be a poor intro to the subject. It focuses too much on dead writers instead of modern work.
Mr. Carter is one of the funniest professors that I have taken. There are a few pop quizzes, but if you read the assigned readings then you will be fine. He cares about the students and truly wants everyone to do well. He gives good feedback on papers, and isn't too tough of a grader.
You have reading homework before every class. The quizzes consist of one-two questions each. But they are about the smallest detail in the readings. Claims to be an easy and generous grader since it is a 100 level course, but that is far from it. Will take off for the smallest of things on assignments and quizzes/midterm.
Michael is very passionate about English and definitely shows it. I heard some negative things about him before class, but he turned out to be great. He was fun and always tried to make the class enjoyable. You write 4 short stories, which the TA's grade, and I think they grade harder than Michael himself
This class is much more difficult than it needs to be. You have to write 2-3 papers, which wouldn't be hard, but he is such a tough grader. There are only 100 points possible for the entire semester, so every point counts. There are about 6 pop quizzes over the course of the semester, so keeping up with the reading is important.
Michael is a very nice guy that makes class very enjoyable. You will have a reasonable amount of reading but it is not the end of the world if you do not complete it. He is very easy to talk to and is super flexible. This class is definitely not an easy A due to the fact that there are so few points in the course. He is a pretty easy grader though.
Dr. Carter is knowledgeable in the subject matter and always has cool facts and tidbits to share, too. He's hilarious and eccentric and a pleasure to have as a teacher; he seems to genuinely care about his students. While he's insightful and you can learn a lot from him, he's not very organized and the course doesn't follow the syllabus dates.
Carter is a bit too eccentric for the classroom- but that also makes it fun. Class is easy and often the readings are interesting. Do the work and you'll pass with at least a B.
Prof Carter is honestly the sweetest man you could take an English class from. He is very much an old "Kentucky Hippie" as I say. He is alway so kind & allows everyone to express their opinions (and acknowledges them!) He doesn't lecture hardly ever- its usually a class conversation. Be prepared to read and write a lot & take a few mini pop quizzes
He is very inconsiderate when it comes to attendance, especially during a pandemic. He locks discussion boards quickly and when you try to email him to get your points for the day he won't respond back. The only time he responded to me was a rude announcement sent to the entire class.
I really enjoyed his class. I don't recommend taking this class if you don't like to read or write essays. He's a really cool guy and his classes are all just conversations about what you are reading. All the books we read were interesting and not all hard to understand. Definitely have to work for your grade as he is a tough grader.
One of the nicest professors I've ever had. As long as you're willing to do some class discussion you should be fine.
It's week 2 and he has assigned 100 pages of reading in between Tuesday and Thursday along with a two page (not double-spaced) informal writing piece. We are also expected to be "keeping a journal" (graded) in which he does not even specify what to write about? We spend all of class discussing the reading where none of us seem to impress him.
He said he hates grading ON THE SYLLABUS and said that he will not be grading ANYTHING until the end of the semester. Expect the check mark system instead (like in Kindergarten) and youll never know your true grade. He WILL call on you in class if no one is talking and assigns insane amounts of reading for a class who is mostly ENS majors.
I have mixed feelings bc his class is honestly so boring. I hate to say it, but sitting in a big empty room for over an hour listening to how to rhyme poems feels redundant. Lots of writing but he gives you plenty of time. This class is easy, although the grading criteria was very unclear and points got taken off randomly (by TA). Nice guy though.
The class was a bit tough but if you put in the work and attend class then you should be fine. Classes are a bit boring but the lectures help with the essays and tests. The grades on your papers depend on your TA. Dr. Carter is super nice though. He offers a bit of extra credit as well.
I took this class just to fill my credits up, it is very easy, the professor cares and wants you to do well.
I was intimidated by the 425 label and creative nonfiction as a style, but Carter made it really fun. Our class was small and our discussions were great. He gave great feedback and was open to a lot of flexibility. I would take him for any creative writing class. Just show up and participate and it will be easy.
I really like Prof. Carter's sense of humor, but if you don't like dry wit and sarcasm you might not like his class. If you stay on top of reading and participate in class it will make the course a lot more enjoyable. Put some quality effort into the papers and you'll survive.
The professor likes to call students out if no one is talking. There's TONs of readings and the assignments are spur of the moment such as reading quizzes.
lectures are so boring and unclear what the point of even learning the content is. If you miss class your grade will suffer, he counts participation based on assigned seats every single day. you MUST have textbook, he gives pop quizzes and randomly calls on people in class to answer stuff about the reading homework. Just a super odd guy in general
Carter is a nice guy and funny too. For a 400 level class, I didn't think the workload was crazy. The readings every week are usually pretty short and so are a majority of the writing assignments. The class is discussion-based most of the time, so it helps when people participate. I read lots of great writing in this class and would take him again!
the only assignments are 3 papers then a final portfolio. lectures are very boring and seem unrelated and confusing. hes very odd dude but funny at times.
This class is super easy and not a lot of work. Attendance is mandatory though and his lectures were pointless 90% of the time, which was annoying, but the class itself is not hard. As long as you try on the assignments and go to class you will get an A.
Avoid this guy at all costs. He's very condescending, and rude. If you ask him a question, he'll just tell you to ask one of the graduate students. He comes to class unprepared. In lecture he just plays Youtube videos and rambles on about himself and his garden. He takes attendance by a seating chart that doesn't work. Watch your attendance grade.
He has to be the worst teacher at U.K. He must have stopped caring a long time ago. Very rude. Very condescending.
He is quite rude and condescending, always making sarcastic comments. His lectures are so boring and teach you absolutely nothing but attendance is mandatory. You grade is based on your TA because Michael doesn't grade anything. There is probably about 50 points worth of assignments for the entire semester so every point counts.
Carter is an alright professor. There were assigned readings twice a week, sometimes with (very surface-level) pop quizzes after. The lectures felt irrelevant and boring which sucked because attendance is a big grade. I preferred the Friday breakout sections because they focused more on writing our three pieces, which was more fun than reading.
Had him for ENG 107. His lectures seemed unrelated to the topics. Few assignments (all graded by TA's) so be sure to really try on them. Kinda strict abt participation in lecture and pop quizzes on the daily readings. Overall easy course, if you get good grades on the 3 papers, its an easy A.
Lectures are drawn out and mandatory. You will be graded on three essays by a TA, along with said TA's teaching a mandatory recitation. Be careful to stay in MLA format, though your grade ultimately is determined by the toughness of your TA.
