He is very good at explaining concepts and giving examples. Also had patience when answering student questions, no matter how mundane. He did a very good job, especially for a summer course.
Great/nice! What you see on the tests/quizzes is from book hw and NOTES (cranked up a few notches). Do hw, pay attention to NOTES, & be comfortable w/how to start the problems. All tests allow a 3x5 notecard (final, you get 2). Very helpful/repeats key concepts. Summer class is intense but better b/c u don't forget the material right away.
Excellent professor. teaches the material in an easy to understand manner. Truly seems like his concern is making sure that the material is learned. Also teaches the recitation. Wish I could have him for every class.
Excellent teacher.Best for math 141. He is clear. Quiz's every week but very simple.
Favorite professor ever! This man loves what he teaches and I found it impossible to help getting caught up in his enthusiasm. His grading is more than generous, and he is very interest in helping students to succeed in his class.
My HS Math school teacher used to discourage me for Math. I hated the subject for 2 long years of HS. But as soon as I walked into his class- It turned my 'Math' life around. I realized the lost beauty of the subject. His clarity, brevity, logic, humbleness, thoroughness and enthusiasm inspired me to study. From a low scorer to the top of class!
He made calculus amazing, explains everything in details and willing to help with questions you dont understand. his exams are easy and he's a good professor
If you eager for a good grade, you should take his course. He allow students bring note card to exam! and you can get half score back of which you lost when you make the correction after exam! He pretty welcome students go to his office hour, he is sincere, but you should not ask boring question otherwise he will pick other student firstly.
Very nice, professional, and with good personality, his manner, consideration, make people comfortable when talked to him; amiable, adorable. Hes mild, graceful, refined and gentle. The lecture and personality is brilliant. Hes really sincere and serious about teaching. Attendance is not mandatory but I never be absent. The accent is pretty cute.
Good guy, great teacher, plenty of examples and tests are not far away from hw and in class examples.
He is really helpful.. literally made calculus interesting and explains in detail and gives examples. I STRONNGLY AGREE U TAKE HIM
Michael Casper is honestly one of the best math professors at UB! He always answers questions and seems to care about the students. Teaches the material clearly. If you're in another math class without him as the professor I would switch into his class because he's one of the best.
Don't know what everyone is talking about. Class is hard to understand and follow. Tests leave little room for error. Moves too quickly through material. Nice guy though.
If you attend his lectures and pay a little attention, you will easily get a 90 on his test. He walks through every single step over and over again. If you don't understand, just ask. He would definitely help you. Best Math Professor I have ever had
If I get chance for 142, I definitely take him without doubt. He is really good. I had math teachers before, he is the best one I've ever had. Please take him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best math teacher ever. Period. Great guy who will help you immensely especially if you go to his office hours. Walks thru each exam on how to study. Made calc seem easy. Honestly amazing professor.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear and everything that was taught in a lecture was on his tests and final, no surprises. Would take again for sure.
He is an ok professor. Sometimes he is clear other times not. He is definitely one professor you do better in class if you visit his office hours, but doing the work on your own can get difficult. He will sometimes leave harder examples blank which doesn't help on portfolio assimiments. Overall this class could be better.
Outstanding professor, should be at the top of everyones list required to take this course. Tests are difficult but not impossible, allows you to use an index card for reference. There is a good amount of homework but he schedules the deadlines for them so that you are never swamped with assignments. Always there for you at extra help. Take him!
Calculus would be everyone's favorite subject if all math teachers were like him. Outstanding professor. He truly cares for his students. If you can't avoid math, go with him, and you'll love it.
This class was very easy. He was very helpful and he stops to make sure everyone gets it. There is a textbook that he gives practice problems from that are supposed to help for test purposes but I didn't purchase it. I would suggest getting the textbook only you'll need the extra help from it, otherwise don't waste your money.
Nice guy, great teacher. Actually ENCOURAGES you to come in for extra help & doesn't put you down for having a hard time with the material. His tests aren't easy but if you do all the homework & come to class you'll do just fine. Learned a lot and actually enjoyed his class & the material.
Took this class online and got an A. Really clear cut as to what is expected in this class. MTH141 isn't so hard & his online lectures were understandable. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't get something. Study, and pass. You need the textbook!
Took online class, got an A. Super chill and nice prof. Just study his examples on class and the online homework, you will do fine on the quiz. The exam is easy but hard to get 100, you'll have to have a great understanding of the concepts to get 100, but for 90 just go over the examples and homework.
This is mostly a reflection on myself and calculus. I did not particularly enjoy calculus but I didn't expect that I would going into the class. He has clear grading criteria and goes over the material in class but is overwhelmed by the number of students in his office hours. In my opinion, he blazes through going over the material in class.
There's hw, but not that much, can be done in 1 night if you understand the material. REALLY NICE and encouraging professor. LOVES it when people go to his office hrs. 3 exams 1 cumulative finals. allows cheat sheets, which if you still fail, then got no words for you. no extra credit, but allows redo exam problems to get points back. amazing guy.
He is always patient and there for you to ask questions. Lectures are clear but intense for winter course. Prepare to work on weekend and get ahead for homework so you can complete. First exam is easy and you should get an A if you studied. The final is cumulative but way too much even for 3hours. Do homework and understand the lecture, at least B+
I think he is the best math teacher, he really teaches well, so don't miss him if you could choose his class.
Allows you to have a cheat sheet for each each of the 4 exams, the final is cumulative but weighed so that the last chapter counts the most. There was no extra credit or test corrections. He takes attendance in lecture so you have to go to class and does not post his completed notes online. His tests are really fair as long as you apply yourself.
If you listen to his lecture and write down notes carefully, it will be very easy to get high score in the exam.
Amazing math professor, and was personally the best math teacher I had in college. He gives you the tools from the first day to get a 100 on the homework and exams. The homework challenges you, which come test time, you will be grateful. Exams are set up to reflect your actual ability instead of test-based mathematic ingenuity. Take this professor.
Made calc 3 as easy as possible. Broke down material so it was clear and simple. He'll spend a lot time outside class if people need help. He gives you one question extra credit on the exams and grades them very generously, he just wants to make sure you understand what you are doing. Workload can get overwhelming b/c it was a 3 week class.
currently still taking his class for Mth 131. Fantastic professor, you will learn a lot. However, the homework is very challenging, nothing like the exam. You will be grateful when the exams come though. Attendance is not mandatory, but i highly advise you go to class. 4 exams, all worth 21.25% and homework is worth 15%
Currently taking MTH131 4 exams - each 21.25% homework is 15% Exams are not cumulative . Homework is harder than the tests. Asks approx 40-50 questions in the test. Get ready to learn minute details.
The best math teacher I have ever met, clearly lecture and easily to understand, homework may be a little heavy, but he will give a lot of extra credit.
He is a good Professor, but he tests you on EVERY LITTLE THING you learn in class. A lot of Homework. His exams are umm... different! You get one point for each question or nothing at all. Doesn't matter if you did the work correctly, if you make a tiny mistake in the answer, you loose the whole point. If you want an "A"take him at your own risk
Though he teaches materials fast (90 mins, 3 chapters!), his exams are okay. Just take a good note and review those notes and you'll be fine. Plus, he allows formula sheet for EVERY exam!
Honestly my favorite professor so far at UB. His notes in class are very understandable and his office hours are very helpful. Lets you make a cheat sheet for each exam and exams are very straight forward, no crazy hard questions or anything. As long as you follow along and do all the homework (IT WILL HELP AND COUNTS) you're set for at least a B
take well written notes and make well developed cheat sheets for the exam and youll get an A for sure!!!! His office hours really help he is very nice and considerate. Take him if you have the chance you will not regret it!!
Tough to learn online.
4 chapter class, 4 tests for each chapter. The tests were mad easy, and also he curves some of the test by adding 6 points or so. getting an 88% is an A-, and 85 a B+. Not a difficult class whatsoever. He's also very clear about what he's teaching and the material is very straight forward. He's a good teacher.
TAKE MICHAEL CASPER. EASIEST CALC CLASS AT UB. He cares about you and your grades. He will help you in office hours. Take him and you won't regret it!
This professor tests you on only basic concepts. His tests are straightforward and he allows a cheat sheet for every exam. His course was well organized and straight to the point. His homework was much more difficult than his exams but he gives a lot of extra credit to help make up for it. Excellent professor that is always willing to help.
I took this class online. He was good about online live lectures. His office hours were a joke though. Constantly changing and only an hour long. I felt he could be demeaning if you didnt understand a topic. Overall I got a B+ so I really cant complain. I take him next semester for Calc 2.
Great professor honestly If you dont get atleast a B+ youre not trying
I am horrible at math, but I'd have to say in all my years, he is the best at explaining math. I never worry about exams, for the homework we do is harder.
I reviewed him for 121. I got a B+ in calc 1, B in calc 2. But hes iffy. Good about emailing, has been helpful during appointments. Has been demeaning and acted like you were an inconvenience to him. He will make appts during OH. Tried to attend OH and I had to sit in the hallway while he spent 45 minutes one on one with a different student.
If you take an online class make sure you commit yourself to the lectures as if you were in an actual class. Skipping around the videos will get you by but you won't fully understand everything. The homework given is harder than the exams and your allowed to bring a note sheet so fill it with solid examples from each unit and you should be good
Great professor do not take any one else for calc you'll regret it
What a saint.
hope he teaches cal 3 easies class cal 1 and cal 2 all got A so many extra credits
He curves the class well, and his office hours are amazing. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND OFFICE HOURS, take the notes, and do the HW at the recommended date. The HW builds up fast, don't let it stack up.
Highly recommended. Class has an hour or 2 of online lecture a week and an in person recitation. Both of which are hugely helpful, the lecture covers broad topics and recitation anything you're having trouble with. He responds to emails almost immediately and his explanations have helped me on every concept I don't understand.
Model professor for online classes. Provides resources you need to excel and then some. Don't save work for last minute, watch lecture videos and you're set for success! Uses inductive reasoning as a teaching method for recitation, so be warned if you were expecting answers to homework to be delivered to you on a silver platter.
If this isn't the ideal math professor, then I have no clue what would be. He structures his lectures perfectly, gives a reasonable amount of homework, and nobody really talks about this type of thing, but his modern approach to math is so much cleaner than that of some ancients that are in the dpt. God tier professor. Take him for everything.
Honestly, this is the best Math Professor a UB. His class is an easy A as long as you put effort into it. While he does give a lot of math homework, he supplements it with extra credit and his exams are directly based on your homework bus easier. I had him for 141 and 142. While I did get a C in 142 I'll admit it was my fault for slacking.
He's ok. Nothing too special. His online lectures can be long and boring but provide decent examples for the cheat sheet. His exams included "short answers" that were supposed to be quick and easy to solve like x^2 but the exams had none of that. TBH his exams were the worst. The exams were supposed to be easier than hw but were only a notch below.
The online lecture is helpful and the professor and TA are both helpful also. Difficulty of the tests is ok and slightly easier than homework, which I found it very annoying and time consuming. I have taken many 400 level math class but online homework are just insanely time consuming and difficult in getting a correct answer.
As you guys noticed, the class is graded by few things, and they offer partial credits at the end of the semester. The exams are so easy and basically they are trying to scare you by saying there is no curve but they gave you extra credits and lenient grading distribution criteria makes you not study at all. But professor and TAs are super nice.
Test is just so easy that everyone will get at least B+. Grading criteria is just like giving A to all students. Test difficulty is 1/3 of the homework problems.
The online lectures and notes are extremely easy to follow and understand & you can always rewatch them over and over again. In order to do good on exams, I recommend spending the time to do the homework which mirror almost exactly what is on the tests. The class isn't graded by many things so don't fall behind on the lectures and homework!
I took Calc 3 with Prof. Casper through his online class and it was honestly one of the best math experiences I have had at any university. His layout of the class is immaculate, and you know when everything is going to be due. If you have questions, he is super easy to get in touch with, and because of the organization of the class, it's not hard.
Casper is a gem, I took this class online and it was very straight forward. You have about 1-2 hours of lecture to watch for the week along with 1-2 hours of homework. You can do it whenever you want during the week. His exams are easier than the homework (it contains the basic homework problems.) He drops the lowest exam and offers extra credit.
Professor Casper is a nice guy, I had him for MTH 142 and MTH 241 ONLINE. I can say his one of the best professor in the math department at UB. I highly suggest him if you taking a math online course. If you work hard and go to all his office hours and Recitation you will be fine because he's ready to answer all your questions.
Casper is one of the worst Calc 1 professors I had in UB. He is trying to make Calculus 1 harder than what it needs to be. He doesn't allow calculators in exams. Also, there is no final exam or quizzes which sucks. Just drop Calculus 1 if you have him ever.
The videos explain the concepts clearly, but the class is very reliant on your performance on the exams. Homework counted for less than a quarter of the grade. Exams start basic, but progressively get harder as you go through each question. The grading on the first section is very strictly graded. Leave out so much as a dx and you get no credit.
I hated math throughout highschool and barely passed Algebra 2 and Precalc, I was certain I was going to fail Math 141, but much to my suprise I actually enjoyed the class alot. He provided a lot of examples, was clear and concise and the homework was fair. Without a doubt one of the best math professors in UB! Would take again.
Casper is one of the worst Calc 1 professors I had in UB. He tends to make Calculus 1 harder than what it needs to be. He rarely allows calculators or formula sheet in exams. Also, there is no final exam or quizzes which sucks. Just drop Calculus 1 if you have him ever.
Casper is one of the worst Calc 1 professors I had in UB. He tends to make Calculus 1 harder than what it needs to be. He rarely allows calculators or formula sheet in exams. Also, there is no final exam or quizzes which sucks. Just drop Calculus 1 if Casper is involved.
He is literally the best professor I've ever had. Easy A if you do the work. Exams are pretty easy. A lot of homework, but it helps prepare for exams. The homework is harder than exams, so don't let that scare you. His lectures are great, he explains the material very well and shows the exact way he wants you to do it on exams and quizzes.
I do not know why people are always rating him high for online Calc. He already have failed more than half students in his Calc class. The exams are tedious, as he does not give any partial credit on the exam. The homework graded very inconsistently as he now uses paper and online format. I'd prefer anyone in person over him.
After taking Calc 2 with Professor Casper, I almost debated on switching to a mathematics major. Easy exams but the homework is tough sometimes, which is a good thing. You learn from the homework and are able to pass the exams. Very nice guy in person as well. Highly recommend for any Math class.
I don't know why his rating is so high for online Calc. His exam is impossible b/c there is no partial credit. He grades you by Mastery, Pass, or Fail Grades. If you messed up simple steps, then you don't get credit for each problem and your grade gets shifted down to failing grades. If you need more partial credit, do not take this class with him.
I took calc 2 with him over the winter. The class was BRUTALLY difficult since it was crammed into 3 week, but thats just the nature of the material. He did a fantastic job teaching, responded quickly on Piazza when you asked a question, and generally had a solid personality, and fair tests/homework. Take math with him, but maybe not over winter!
Good person, but out of touch. Wants us to do 15 questions in 1 hour. He uses minimal, best case examples so when you're lost. Wish he would do more, harder examples in lecture and explain his thought process out in a detailed way because right now I end each lecture having gained minimal knowledge.
There is a lot of homework, but in the plus side, the quiz questions are very similar to the homework and if you do the homework, you automatically end up learning the topic. The quizes are also every 2 weeks, so you don't have to worry too much about forgetting the topics. Lectures are great too!
Professor Casper is super organized with assignments and notes. His lectures are easy to follow and really helpful for homeworks and tests. He gives recitation exams about every other week but with clear feedbacks too. Personally, i think his lecture examples and the way he go over them is why he is a good calc professor. I got a 99 on the final..
If you have a choice for MTH142 professors. Make it a top priority to choose casper. Fantastic at teaching and getting a point across. Makes calculus feel a lot easier. His tempo and way of teaching makes it easy to understand what the material.
I would absolutely give 6 stars if I could. Professor Casper teaches in a way that makes calculus understandable for all. He teaches slow enough so you have time to process what he's teaching about. Best math professor/teacher I have ever had. He also goes over the homework with the class which is extremely helpful. He does whatever he can to help.
Anyone who gives Casper a low rating is just lazy and not willing to put in the work. Tests are no partial credit but you are allowed to retry the questions you got wrong on the next exam, not to mention the exams are easy. 5 lectures a week is a lot but they are usually short and he is explains it in such a way where anyone is able to understand.
Casper is a pretty good professor. Whoever rates him low definitely didn't put in the work they should have. His test are very similar to the homework and if you mess up a question on the test, you can attempt in the following test.
If you miss a test you can basically kiss any chance at getting mastery checks goodbye, as its nearly impossible to earn all 16 on the next test. Even though its 70% of your grade. No partial credit and unfair grading for full page of work with correct answers. Fails to respond to urgent emails within a week, or doesn't respond at all.
I took him for 141 and 142 He has good lectures and really goes slow and allows u to understand the material. Even though he doesnt allow partial credit on the exams if u do the homework its literally the same thing but different numbers He cares about his students and overall really friendly Not recommended for people who rely on partial credit
Quiz questions are easier versions of the homework questions, so basically if you do all the homework properly, there's no reason you should get a terrible grade.
The homework was intense but was really good prep for the exams. If I had trouble, I could post to the discussion board and he answered quickly. The homework is a lot harder than the exams so master it and you'll be set. There were many opportunities to get missed points back. Overall, great class, not as stressful with the makeup exams.
Casper videos on youtube the best thing ever, we call it the Casper marathon, just do the Casper marathon a night before midterm and ace that test boi.
He's a pretty okay professor. He just doesn't respond to his emails.
Incredible professor, his website is incredibly useful and he spends lots of time helping students using his help forum. The class is difficult, but with his help, anyone can do well.
Though he was a great professor however weekly quizzes will quickly consume any additional time you had trying to prepare for them. There is no partial credit given for any of his quizzes, you either got credit or you didn't. Overall though the resources he provided were great, very informational, and very useful, the quizzes will bring you down.
I am about to finish MTH 142 which is calc 2 and Michael Casper is one of the best professors I've had, although there is a fair bit of homework it is all just aimed at having you master the content. His lectures are on another level and you can tell he enjoys his job because he makes math fun. He also has a ton of online resources.
Casper is a great professor to have for MTH 142. Homework takes time to do, quizzes are an easier version of homework. The only critique I have is it's hard to get in touch with him after class if you have any problems and he doesn't reply fast enough on the forum.
his lectures are awesome and recorded, so u dont need to attend in-person lecture, but he gives tons of hard hw, and no partial credit on bi-weekly exams(but u have 3 tries on each question, but with different numbers). anyway, if you heavily rely on partial credit or have a busy schedule, he is not your choice.
This professor is great, the only reason I failed is because I waited too long to take the class serious. Calculus 2 is not easy but compared to other professors he does a great job at teaching. Make sure to try and study everyday!!
His current format is way worse than online format. He is so hard on flipped classroom environment where he gives quizzes, and hw first, then cover the material related to quizzes and hw later. Does not allow use of formula sheet on exams, and there is no partial credit either. So you get 0 even if your work is correct, but values are bit off.
Excellent professor. Teaches clearly and solves doubts. Weekly graded quizzes(didn't like this). 2 mid-term exams and a final exam. Peer-evaluation every week.
Honestly Casper is a laid back guy. The way he explains things is so simple but get the point across. I wasn't consistently watching the preparation materials beforehand, but his teaching style made it so easy for me grasp the content from the lectures. Sometimes the homeworks get lengthy but the math help center is a great place to get it done.
An Amazing professor! He is very great at teaching but be ready to do a lot of homework and work. You don't "need" to go to his lectures but he has prerecorded videos on his website which are free to access. Go to his office hours if you have any issues they are of huge help. You get weekly quizzes which aren't a challenge if you pay attention.
Great professor! Explains everything clearly. Hw can be a little lengthy with some tough questions but I went to the math place or office hrs for help with those. Weekly checkpoint exams (more like quizzes) were usually no more than 4 questions and you have a few opportunities to make them up if you don't get credit.
Really enjoyed his grading. Grading on the checkpoint exams are very strict but you can retake them in recitation for full credit. For the midterms/final, you still get some points if your technique is right, but your answer is wrong. His videos were incredibly helpful. Attendance counts in your grade. Wish he taught Calc 2 this semester :)
Professor Casper knows how to teach and it shows. One of the best professors I've ever had. There are weekly in-class quizzes, which seems overwhelming at first, but there are a lot of chances to get any missing points back.
dont know what kind of magic this guy has but he made everything just make sense. if you don't understand something, watch his videos where he goes over the concept and then does some practice problems. attendance matters a lot and if you take him you'll see why, very easy to get an A as long as you attend lectures and recitation
His lecture videos are very clear but he goes verrrrry slow. He's really good at explaining math and goes slow through the material. Homework is super annoying since you have to do it online and write out all of the questions and answers in person. Also banned technology and says you get a 0 if he sees you on your phone.
He is pretty strict with how he grades and if you skip steps in showing your work, you will lose points. So even if you understand the material know how to do it in his format. Pretty good teacher though. Doesn't answer emails but you can go to office hours. He also basically offers chances for retakes (for some things) which is great
One of the best professors I have had so far. His work is pretty straightforward if you watch his lectures and attend class. There is constant graded work such as weekly tests however they are usually problems seen in class or in the homework. Lets you attempt test questions again and test questions receive feedback and are worked on in class.
The course was quite a bit of content, but Prof. Casper presents it as clearly as possible, even if you aren't a strong math student. I never had any issues with communication, and he gives a few opportunities to get points back if you missed them. I would certainly recommend taking a course with him if you have the opportunity.
Professor Casper is fantastic! I was initially scared to take a calculus course, but he managed to make the topic clear and satisfying for me. His grading system is very fair. In the second half of the semester the homework load was a bit much for each topic, but that is my only complaint. He is very friendly and helpful during office hours.
He's a pretty good professor, but the structure or his course is annoying. Checkpoint exams and notebooks get very overwhelming very quickly, and good exam grades won't help you if you do poorly on the other material.
Casper knows how to teach very well and ensures you understand the material presented in class. Homework can be a lot because the notebooks are written out a certain way. Participation and homework count a lot towards your grade, but you don't know your grade till the end of the semester. 6 participation passes and 2 homework passes
I was never a math person and was scared to take calc 1.His lectures are clear to understand and he goes slow and explains every step which really helped me understand things. You get checkpoint exams which test your ability on the topic. It is super helpful because if you didn't learn it the first time you can try It again.
Choose Him!!!!!
Don't take him
DO NOT TAKE MICHAEL CASPER. He has a ridiculous schedule that includes a flipped classroom lecture before every class, a LOT of homework, a 'checkpoint exam' every week, and participation questions once every lecture. His schedule also includes 4 exams, 3 midterms and one final, while every other calc 241 class only has 2 midterms and one final.
Lots and lots of homework. Insane amount of homework. Be warned
Be prepared for excessive homework, taking multiple hours for assignments. He uses webwork although free, it gives no examples or help towards the problems. The grading system also sucks, if you dont do more than 95 percent of the homework you don't get credit for it. You have to submit your work to him. Oh and you cant get a 95 YOU HAVE TO DO ALL.
Probably your worst choice for calc 3. Don't take him. His workload is far more intense than any other professor.
Michael Casper is a good teacher and goes slow but takes points off for the littlest things. Sometimes his attitude is not the greatest towards some students. He does mark stuff off on our exams without really explaining what the answer is. Although he is a good professor and I am performing well, there is just some little things that I do not like.
If you are worried about being overloaded with work do not take michael casper
Don't even bother him. Has an idiotic grading rubric of something called 'learning checks', where in order to get one, you must 1.) Get 95% on that week's homework, 2.) Get 100% on a weekly quiz, and 3.) get all participation credit. There is no individual credit. If you miss one item, you get a 0 for the entire learning checkpoint, which is 25%.
Constant homework, everyday either learning something new in lecture or the couple days you don't have his class you have to watch videos and do some questions to cover part of the next day's topic. You have to show work for homework problems, if he doesn't like the amount you showed on even 1 problem the whole thing is a 0.
His grading method is ridiculous. You can spend hours on his homework and questions doing them to the best of your ability and still get a 0 on the "learning check" and have nothing to show for it. After doing hw's on the website he makes you handwrite some of the questions out. Biggest waste of time.
If you want a teacher that does not understand how to grade. You have found the right teacher. He expects perfection on things you learn one week ago for his quizzes if you dont get the quizzes correct you get no credit on the homework. WHICH YOU NEED A 95 PERCENT ON TO EVEN GET A LICK OF CREDIT FOR IT. get ready for part 2.
hey im am back. for part 2. All in all do not take him if you are not a quick learner because he will tank your grade with his grading. HE GIVES SECOND ATTEMPTS BUT THEY ARE HADER DO NOT BE FOOLED. IF YOU ARE SITTING GETTIGN READY TO MAKE YOUR SCHUDLE AND SOMEONE TOLD YOU HE WAS GOOD THEY LIED. NOT EVEN A LITTLE. I PROMISE YOU. I WOULD NEVER LIE!!!
Good at teaching in class, horrible at everything else. Doesn't
He is passionate when he teaches, and is a good professor if you learn things quickly. He is easy to talk to and will help you out if asked. However, expect your GPA to drop due to how he grades. If you do not ace the HW, his notebook, and a quiz, the learning check is not earned. There are ways to get them back, but attendance is required to pass.
Clear and understanding lectures. Easy to take notes as you'll be advised to print the lecture notes and bring them to class. Lectures and recitations are mandatory, you'll fall behind quick if you're not consistent with attendance especially in recitations. The homework is heavy but if you complete it then the midterms/quizzes become light.

Definitely lots of homework but it will pay off eventually during midterms. Definitely do well on the learning checks every week then u should be fine. Also DO NOT wait until the last seconds to do the homework you will not finish. The final exam is pretty hard. Study for it.
Casper takes a modern approach to learning. There is prep work for most lectures, and a decent amount of homework. But all of his quizzes and tests are very fair. For the quizzes (once a week), they are graded as a simple right or wrong, but you have multiple attempts for them. The tests are just a combination of the quizzes, so just study those.
Lots of Homework, but the homework doesn't take that long, and if you have trouble Casper is super accessible and super nice. you are graded on a lot of small things so messing up on one or two isn't that bad.
Yes he gives out a lot of HW but it is not challenging. Weekly quizzes but we had 5 attempts to get the Quiz grade to 100 through reattempts to exams you will get the credit. Your study material is based off the HW and Quizzes, no practice tests. Usually the HW is harder than the tests. His office hours are amazing, he truly cares about helping us.
He is a pretty good teacher and I enjoy the flipped classroom because it keeps me on track. However, he is not a nice person. Like straight up does not care about anybody's schedules or anything. I can't attend his office hours and he gave me some nasty responses before class started when I asked him questions. He doesn't like emails either.
Do not take Casper. His learning checks make it impossible to catch up with if you happen to miss a class due to illness. There is an extremely high amount of work attached to this class, more than anything, you will spend at least 6 hours on the homework, a few hours studying for nonsense quizzes every recitation, and you'll still struggle.
Do not take Michael Casper. Also, ignore the overwhelming number of positive reviews advocating for him. No one I have ever talked to at this school has ever said anything positive about this professor. I'm not sure where these reviews are coming from, but it's not from any students I have ever met.
Don't ever take him!!! He gives a lot of homework and work. For every homework you have show work to 2-4 problems by hand and submit a picture to him and show him you did it. For a quiz, you have two tries per quiz but even if you mass a sign wrong you will retry again. For every lecture you will have to watch a video and do problems before class.
Professor Casper is very good at teaching in person, through videos, and during office hours. I wouldn't take his class again because of the way the course was organized.
Really tough grader, so be ready to work. However, it pays off so much, especially on the exams. He has amazing lectures and I really feel like I learned the material. the learning check system is a little ridiculous imo, but he gives a lot of second chances so its not unattainable if you do what you are supposed to do. Overall amazing professor
If you have have bought WebAssign for multiple terms, avoid him as he uses another website. While I'd say he is very good at teaching topics, I wouldn't recommend him due to his "Work Checks". If you do the HW, but mess up on the work shown, you do not get credit for the topic. This also applies to quizzes, as they are grouped with HW/Work.
I wouldn't take MTH142 with anyone else. This man is amazing at walking you through exactly how do every single kind of problem you'll come across. You'll do a lot of homework, but if you just do it you're nearly guaranteed an A on every exam. TAKE HIM!
Walks you through every step carefully, tough grader but it helps you in the long run. Great math teacher!
Professor Casper has the worst grading system I've ever encountered. If you don't get a 100% on his weekly quizzes, all of your homework and attendance will not count for that given topic. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS
Very nice professor, I loved the way he handled flipped classroom and he was a very fair grader. Easily one of the best profs I've had yet.
I failed his class... had quizzes every week and tons of assignments. it was too much. But, his teaching style wasn't bad, just have to make sure you study up on the material and go to office hours or tutoring sessions if you need help.
Lots of homework, but Casper is super helpful in office hours. Use Unstuck AI, along with the quizzes, to prepare effectively for the fair exams.
His grading system is terrible and harsh, he is not understanding and rude as well. He is a good lecturer, but nothing else about him or his class is redeeming.
Overall, I enjoyed his lectures, and he explained things very well. Though his grading system is really dumb, and he can be a pretty harsh grader. He also uses a semi flipped style, so you have to watch a video and do participation problems before every lecture. There's also quizzes every Wednesday, but you can do a 2nd attempt in recitation.
A very tough grader, who gives lots of homework and I personally dislike his teaching style. His grade style is one of the worst things I've experienced in college, although he gives you chances, it still doesn't work for all. I'd say ONLY take him if he fits in your schedule, otherwise find someone, anyone, else.
Literally the best lecturer ive ever had for a class. 1000% would take again. He uploads mini-lectures on youtube for you to watch to get familiar with the topic of the lecture beforehand. And during lectures he makes sure to break down every step along the way. Also, if you get a quiz question wrong, you can take the quiz again for full credit.
The greatest math instructor I've ever had. Yes, he is a strict grader, and there is a good amount of work, but all of that is just to help you memorize the material. Since he teaches everything over, I thought that his teaching style was ideal for me as someone from a lacking math background and that I didn't lack any particular techniques.
I took this class during the winter session and Casper was great. He treated this class like a flipped classroom where we'd watch the lecture videos first, then get onto zoom with him and go over any questions we had from the homework or just in general. He's great at explaining problems. However, he is very strict when it comes to grading.
if you care about your grade than chose Robert Busch. If you care about actually being forced to learn and be good at math chose Michael Casper. He doesnt leave room for anyone to slack off.
His teaching style is good, I think he explains the concepts well, but it got a bit annoying having to do constant work inside and outside of class for a grade, like watching videos and doing participation problems. but if you do all the work the class should be easy enough.
He is HORRIBLE and worst grader on earth! Ridiculous amounts of homework and if you make one mistake you fail the week. Do NOT take this professors class!
Casper is heavy on homework and quizzes, but he gives you so many opportunities to make it up. It's basically impossible to fail. Just do the homework, and pay attention to what is on the quizzes. The midterms are extremely similar to them. If you do the bare minimum, you'll get a good grade. He is also very caring and passionate for mathematics!
Really strict grader and ridiculous grading format. Do not take. Ever. Youre welcome.
Very great professor for Calc 3.
Great guy. Flipped classroom was new to me but it works really well for me. I'd take him for future math classes if I could.
Math has never been my strong suit. However, Professor Casper is one of the greatest math teachers I've ever had. His lectures are so easy to understand, you can put an 8 year old in this class & they'd understand calculus. I should warn that it is very important you don't miss class. Lectures are not recorded and there are participation questions.
This guy is the goat at teaching calculus but assigns way too much hw and quizzes every single week. If I were you, I would take another professor and watch his videos on the side because he has a youtube channel which he gives basically the same teaching in lecture.
Just no, tough grader, his grading methods don't make sense at all, the class is pretty easy but the professor is annoying, he is rude sometimes. Just no
His grading system is confusing, stressful, and terrible for someone who could only focus on one thing rather multi-tasking with perfect notes and keeping up with the material and understanding how to solve math while enjoying the beauty of math. He made me hate it when I love math
It was a horrible experience for me I cried a lot, because I love math but the way he grades just kills my love for it
I honestly dont think hes a bad professor hes just a tough grader he does grade differently compared to other teachers but hes good at explaining concepts. If youre lazy you will fail his class everyone complaining about him just doesnt like studying or putting any effort in. I would say his workload is fair and as long as you do it you'll get an A
Fantastic teacher, he sets you up to succeed in every way imaginable. The Checkpoint exams at the end of every week are annoying at first but become helpful fast. He gives you multiple attempts at everything. TA's are essentially irrelevant but that's okay for this class. 10/10 professor. Only way to fail is by not showing up to class
Very annoying grading, however he is amazing at lecuturing, and I really feel like I knew the substance going into the final exam, even without studying.
is it really that hard to reply to students mails? Since the beginning and the end of the semester never once has he reply to any of my mails. Sir, go to outlook and sit down and be kind and reply. It's not hard. If you don't know how to reply or use outlook, ask for help from your peers.
Assigned a lot of work to do inside and out of class, but it prepared you very well for midterms because you got to see the material so much. He is a great professor and explains topics decently well. GO TO OFFICE HOURS, a lot of people complain but are putting no effort in, he wants to help you. I would recommend him over busch, 10/10 professor.
Took him previously for MTH 141. Best math professor I've ever had. The learning checkpoint quizzes will either make or break you.
Mr. Casper is very nice and enthusiastic during lecture making it a lot easier to pay attention. He breaks things down in a way that everyone understands and moves at a good pace. He gives a ton of homework and grades a certain way in which you don't always get credit for all the homework you do. You must know what you are doing to do well.
Fantastic at lecturing and breaking-down concepts. He primarily teaches from examples. Expect to print A LOT OF PAPERS. Grading scheme was made by satan; you either get an A, or a C+, no in-between. The exams are on par with his weekly in-class quizzes (perhaps even easier). You will do so much problems, you won't forget the materials.
Michael Casper definitely knows his material but the course format sucks. He gives way to much excess work and has no leeway for grading. His lectures require you to understand what he teaches you that day immediately as you need to fill out the practice problems done in class correctly to earn credit.
Probably one of the most annoying curriculums I ever had to deal with.He doesnt grade normally he grades with "checkmarks" which require you to get an 80 at least on hw and a 100 on both participation problems and quizzes.I did fine on the first 2 but quizzes cooked me and my grade.Theres more I can say but expect a lot of outside work and hw
He just gives too much homework. Like homework after every lecture. And too strict with attendance and being late in class.
Ridiculous grading scheme, get the questions right but don't do it his way to a T he marks it wrong. Show up to class and do the participation problems correctly yet not get attendance credit because he doesn't like the type of paper u used. He will assign homework and make it due that same night, even on Fridays. SO MUCH UNNECCESARY HOMEWORK.
Love him! He made math super simple and easy as long as your follow all his work and criteria. Easy to get a great grade in the class.
Genuinely amazing professor!! He definitely believes in repetition as a way of learning, which is perfect for a calculus course. There are preparation and participation problems every class, but they are graded on the basis of true effort - not exact correctness. There are quizzes every week, but they can be retaken in recitation.
Dr Casper is an excellent lecturer, he does so many problems in class to force you to know the curriculum. He moves very fast, attendance is required for a grade, and he does pre-lecture videos you need to watch. His grading is somewhat weird with the notebook checks and checkpoint quizzes, but they are all retakeable at the end of the semester.
He's a great teacher and he's really nice. He explains everything thoroughly, and he'll go through every question. It's a very easy class if you pay attention in lecture. Recitation really helps for the checkpoint exams.
He was very well organized. There were a lot of assignments which could get annoying but none were really difficult and it helps you remember the material and makes it so easier when it comes to the test. His exams were easy as long as you studied for a little bit of time you were more than fine.
Every single day of my life, I wish I got ran over by a truck because of him. His grading system is genuinely the worst thing you could have ever imagined as you either get an A or F, literally no in between. He is seriously hated by the whole math department at UB. Wanna know how I know that? It's because my CHEMISTRY TA told me. CHEMISTRY. TA.
This is a late review by many years, but going through all my classes I wish they were all taught by Prof Casper. He assigned a lot of homework and weekly quizzes... a downside..but they were what solidified my calculus knowledge. He explains everything clearly and gives you several chances to make up your quizzes.
good professor but would drag on the classes until the very last minute which sucked for me since i had to walk to the other side of campus for my next class in 10min. checkpoint exams are pretty easy. a lot of unnecessary homework assignments tho
He is a great professor. He gives a lot of homework but it's easy and you have plenty of time to do it. He gives weekly quizzes; they are easy and you have multiple tries if you don't get full credit the first try. Exams are as difficult as these quizzes. Take notes on the packet. If you do what's required, you don't need to study on your own.
