To me, he was a jerk. But I had him at 8AM. Lab quizzes are tough.
lectures/explains well. it's a shame, he's nearly a memorably good prof, but he'd rather be snide/smug instead of enthusiastic/supportive.
Had him twice for Chem Labs at 8am! Tough quizzes, can be a jerk at times, but will be more helpful and kind if you go see him in his office.

Very poor teaching methods. Practically nonexistant. Reads straight from his notes, which he post online, and actually teaches nothing. I learned more from reading the book. Very smug indeed...
Very hard with testing, no attendance policy, but very smug and haughty. Very talkative and personable outside of class though.
He is very nice and very helpful once you get to know him. I had him for 217 at 8am, and decided to get up for 218 at 8am just to take him again.
I had him years ago for freshman chem. He is a pretty good teacher and a nice guy, you just have to get used to his personality. his labs were a little disorganized, but the granding scale in the tests was great!!! 70% and up = A!
tests will kill you. there is a reason a 70% and up is an A, and thats because no one who hasnt memorized every problem in the book will make a 90% or higher. otherwise, good class.
I was a TA for this class...this man has no regard for the students concerns and often times comments on how he does not care if everyone fails, and how he likes to see some fail. His tests are very hard
Very hard and vary unhelpful. avoid this teacher at all costs
Jerk - even to us smart guys. Avoid at all cost! You will fail.
He is somewhat caring I think, but has no reguard as to the fact that we all don't just know the whole damned chemistry book. If I were going to memorize the everything I would probably be getting a C at the highest. Save yourself the time, work and money
Run, run to the hills. maybe he won't get you there.
Although his labs were 8am, I took him twice. If I ever needed help with anything, even non-chem lab stuff, I felt very comfortable going to him. Has a very high opinion of himself, but it very well may be deserved.
TOO HARD!!! TESTS ARE SO HARD!! His curve is nice though!
he was really full of himself, but he wasnt a bad teacher, his tests were hard, but he scale makes up for it...
Stay away from this man and his tests!
He is VERY knowledgeable of everything being covered in the class, and is very approachable inside and out of class. But, make no mistake, his tests are incredibly hard!
His tests are really hard, but he's a nice guy, and if you have a question he'll do everything he can to explain it to you. Pay attention to the example problems in the book, and the questions people ask in class b/c they're usually on the test
Castellani is a SUPER, SUPER nice guy. I talk to him often during office hours. He does introduce material quickly though, and you have to keep on your toes to succeed. We've had 2 Tests and I've received 2 A's. Can't be that. Again, he's really nice.
Very helpful. If you have questions he is very thourough in explaining. The tests are hard but a lot of the material is covered in class. His webpage is very helpfull also!
Do not take this class!

An awesome teacher if you aren't a slacker and just trying to get by with an easy grade. The best chemistry teacher I have ever had! Very helpful and cares if you aren't a jerk to him. I highly recommend him.
His tests are SO hard. You have to approach him to get help, and sometimes he can be intimidating. HOWEVER, once you do approach him he is VERY nice. The other day he called me by name and I was shocked. I didn't even know that he knew who I was.

This man will make chemistry hell, unless you can read his mind you will never answer a question right on his tests. If you recieve an A in his class, then go work for NASA, youll be qualified enough. And if you recieve a B, leave Marshall and go apply at Harvard. Dont take this class.
he gives very hard tests it would be impossible to get an A or even a B in his class. a really sick teacher who braggs about how hard his tests are and how hard it is to get good grades. don't take this class, it would be better to get an overload in another class with a better teacher.
I think Dr. Castellani is one of the best teachers. Heck, last test I took I got an 80 on it. That is an A on his scale. Those who don't do well are just slackers trying to get by.
a real shart.
This class has a lot of information to it, so the class in general will be hard. Castellani is a very enthusiastic teacher and will help anyone who asks for help. Tests can be difficult, but he makes up for that with his grading scale. ovelall a good professor, i would take him again if possible.
This man is very mean and vindictive. He belittles and degrades anyone who happens to not strike his fancy. I would never again take a class he teaches, and I feel sad my school allows him to waste so much tuition.
He taught as if he were the smartest man on earth trying to teach a group of mentally handicapped people. he was arrogant in his giving of information, and his tests are on the verge of impossible. you must memorize definitions word-for-word. all in all, not a good teacher to take, unless you know everything that the course will go over.
Avoid at all costs! Not at all helpful- passing professors will help your lab more than he will. Refuses to explain ANYTHING clearly and concisely- everything's been dragged out to make it as confusing as possible. Doesn't even read labs befoer coming to class- if you have to read it (for his quizzes) so should he.
He's so arrogant . i hate him.that kadoonkadonk
He's the toughest professor I've had yet, demanding lots of study time. In his defense, however, I'll say that I've learned the most I've ever learned by his method of teaching. (Constantly asks the question, Why) If you're up for a challenge, willing to work hard, and want an excellent quality course, take him; just remember, it will be tough!
He teaches in an "over your head" style; if you don't get it in the first place, you won't get it after his discussion. His quizzes sometimes involve questions that were never addressed in lecture, and he rarely involves himself in the laboratory portion of the class. Midterm and final exams are straight from the quizzes, however.
If you're lazy, don't take him. If you're motivated and genuinely want to learn, I'd recommend him. He is extremely helpful out of class and truly wants his students to learn. I credit him with much of my interest in Chemistry.
Dr. Castellani is one of those professors who genuinely want his students to learn. If you're motivated and willing to swallow your pride in order to tough the class out, in the end you'll find yourself endebted to him for the vast amount you've learned from him. The biggest thing I can suggest for any of his classes is to get to know him.
Needs to take the stick from u know where. Terrible at getting the whole class involved.
Awful- lectures don't explain much. If you didn't understand it before the lecture, be prepared to be completely lost afterward. Quizzes come from the pre/post lab questions, and the final comes straight from the quizzes- if you did poorly on a quiz (which happens all the time), don't expect a straight answer if you ask- you won't get one.
Dr. Castellani is all in all a decent professor. He teaches one thing but tests you on something that 's unrelated or "over your head." The exams are difficult and unfair but thought provoking
Castellani is terrible. Don't be fooled by the first impression, he's a horrible professor. No matter how interested you are in Chemistry, if you don't get the topics before his "lectures," you won't have a chance afterward. The only reason anyone passed in my class was because of the TAs. Avoid him at all costs. His class is a waste of your time.

He believes he is better than everyone else.He is rude to students and other facuty. He makes his quizes and midterms hard,is strict on grading. He even made a quiz in portugesse because he said we should know the tests by now.He wants definitions verbatume and if you can't then you get no points. If you have another option other than him go with it.
Awful! Avoid him! His lectures are way above your head and the quizzes and tests are rediculous. If you go to him with questions, don't expect to understand when you leave. Also, expect to be in his office for like an hour, he talks forever! He seems like a nice guy.. "family" guy, but he's an awful professor.
He is the dept. chair so you cant complain about him to anyone. Do not take this man for chemistry. he single handedly ruined my goals concerning me practicing medicine. tests are outrageously hard. he should be fired immediately. he thinks he is better than you. actually, he knows he is. he will let you know too. this man is the devil.
Difficult and impossible to work with. He doesn't do a good job of explaining. When in labs he is ridiculously anal.
He is probably the worse professor ever. I told people that had him as a professor that i had him and they just shook their heads. I dread going to that class and I'm an A student. He's arrogant and he tells you what you know and what you can't know and will never ever know. He is a waste of oxygen and my time.
This is a hard class. I eventually had to drop it. He was extremely helpful and understanding, even with no reason to be polite to me. I did not go to class and did not give it a chance. If you are willing to work and want to learn a lot, then he is the professor you want.
No doubt his class is very hard, but everyone gave me the impression it was going to be impossible to get an A-- but it isn't. You will need to study and you won't get high grades on the exams, but he scales them in a fair enough way that its possible to pass-and get an A :)
Dr Castellani is tough, but if work hard and youll pass. If you dont understand something, just go to his office, simple as that. Old tests and exams help you. I suck at chemistry and passed. Plus grading scale is awesome. 70=a,55=b,40=c.Cant beat that.Would take him again. He will help you if you try, so don't listen to people.
hr is good doesnt teach as much as dr larson but would enhoy the class much more if he tought it rather than larson. larson is horrible and will not help you he makes nrm so huge when its not used but 2 lectures in organic the man sucks but casto. is the man and will help you hard to find at times but does help u and expalins things till u get them
Extremely receptive to those needing help understanding. I missed the first test due to being sick, and I didn't have to make it up until the end of the semester, and he said he'd throw it out if it was bad. Always in his office ready to help. A nice guy that loves his subject matter. I'd take him 100/100 times. Chemistry's rough, but he's great.
He is not a bad guy, but if you're looking to have it easy, then take another prof. This guy is really smart and is probably over your head. If you truly want to go deep with Chemistry and understand it like the genius he is, then take him. He is really helpful also, but tests are harder than other CHM prof, which is why his grading scale is >70=A.
Very Tough
Dr. Castellani is an extremely smart man. his class is so hard and you really have to study, but if you're serious about being a science major and plan to do any kind of graduate program, i suggest you take him for the experience.
Lectures are normally about how he knows everything and you dont.test are generally the same layout and are EXTREMELY difficult, you can pass his class if you show up everyday, study his notes, and look at his old test, which are all posted online. dont worry about taking notes in class because he will only make problems more difficult.
Very skilled at his subject, and very willing to help. I came to him before even taking the class, and he answered any and all questions I had. He's more right brained, and thus teaches without a lot of number work. Creative, and overall the best I've had. Does like to test you with mind-games though. Hope to take again in the future.
He is a good person, but unless you have an extreme background in the subject you are taking, there's a good chance you won't do well. I had taken chemistry in high school and made an A. I had trouble learning from him and I went to tutoring for help. I stayed in tutoring everyday for 2-3 hours. I got halfway through the semester and had to drop.
His class can be difficult, but he is more than willing to help you learn. Although the tests are tough, you're given a very generous curve. If you go to his office hours or make an appointment, he'll gladly sit with you and go over whatever you want even if it's inconvenient for him. Overall, he's tough but a good teacher.
The negative comments saying that it is impossible to do well in his class are highly exaggerated. Yes, he's hard as hell, but I ended up finishing with an A. Super nice guy and always extremely helpful. If you're interested in chemistry, you'll like his class.
This class was fairly easy. The schedule was rather erratic though and the class was very unorganized. Additionally, Dr. Castellani comes off as quite arrogant, but I think it may just be his sense of humor. Overall, not too bad of a class.
I had 211 with Dr. C, but I also worked for him for four years in his research lab. Over that time he became like a father to me. Yes, his tests are difficult and yes, he is sarcastic. But, that's what makes him great, IMHO. If you just want to get through 211 with an easy "A", take someone else. If you want to learn chemistry, take him.
This is not an easy class, but Dr. Castellani makes getting less than a B impossible. By far the most involved professor I've had; if he passes you in the hallway he'll stop and help you, even if that makes him late for a meeting or class. Very helpful in office hours, and he's likely to give you life advice. Don't take his humor as criticism.
Really a tough class to take! He grades very harshly and the tests are much harder than the other 211 professors. However, if you want to learn chemistry, TAKE HIM!
So many things I could say about Dr. Castellani. Tests are very tough and between 85-90% of your grade in the class. Totally knows chemistry. Gives you 15 page notes for each chapter, everything that would possibly be on the test is in the notes. You can go to his office to talk to him about anything. He is a fantastic prof, fair, but difficult.
He is a really nice guy outside of class but can come off as arrogant in class. His tests are hard but there is always a curve. Also he will take points off for every little mistake you make even if it is small. His notes are more helpful than the book and are easier to read.
Dr. C gets a bad rep. Yes he has high expectations, & yes he expects you to earn your grade. But he was arguably the most helpful professor I've had. Any time I walked into his office he would take time to explain in detail any concept I was struggling with. He has a unique sense of humor usually at students expense, but he wants to see you succeed
If you decide to take Professor Castellani, or are randomly put in one of his classes, you will either love or hate him, there is no in-between. He is by far one of the most intelligent professors you will ever have, and you will learn a lot in his class, but his class is very difficult, and tests make up around 90% of the grade.
If you have the option, take this class. Although it was extremely difficult and time consuming, you will learn a lot of material that will prepare you for future chemistry courses. Dr. Castellani is sarcastic and a tough grader, but extremely helpful in his office and genuinely cares about his students. Lots of homework, but he only gives A or B.
Dr. Castellani will really challenge you, only take his class if you're ready to work. Don't be afraid to ask questions though, he's always willing to help and explain and work with a student.
Really is a good guy, he's just super smart and can seem condescending at times. He really wants you to learn and is a little unconventional. Stop by his office hours once or twice and it really will help you improve your grade. He also has a curved grading scale because he realizes his exams are harder than other professors.
Dr. Castellani seems to have a very limited understanding of the material he teaches which makes him unable to address questions or really help his students. Yet, his exams are still oddly specific. In all, a very poor professor.
Dr. Castellani is funny, encouraging, kind, and helpful. Your grade comes from two exams, weekly lab reports, and quizzes (about every other week). The lab reports were not hard, because he changes what is required each week. He understands the difficulty of chemistry and grades accordingly (some curves and retests). He appreciates participation!
218H is by no means an easy class, but Castellani does a good job with it. He lets you see old quizzes and they ARE LITERALLY THE SAME. The only difference is that he changes the compounds and the NMR spectrum. You have a known and an unknown lab report due each lecture. Dont write more on the reports then what is needed.
Dr. Castellani is the head of the chemistry department at Marshall. He seems like he cares about his students yet shows up to his own class for about ten minutes to lecture and hand out a test and then leaves for the lab portion of the class. The quizzes are weekly and about the lab that week. Good chance you wont have learned it in lecture yet.
Be prepared for quizzes! Read/understand each experiment thoroughly before class - this makes studying for the midterm/final much easier!! Dr. Castellani is both very intelligent and caring, and is willing to talk with you outside of class. Would definitely recommend him for 218!
This class will certainly make you work for it. All of the labs are done on your own time outside of class. Castellani will always help you if you schedule office hours or just randomly see him in the hallway. He gives good feedback and will tell you what you're doing wrong so you can improve. You might regret taking the class at first, but its fun
cant say enough bad things ab him. made a bio chem major hate chem. brags ab other chem profs not passing his exams. tests on things he does not teach. ik at least 10 other students to fail his class. grades on a curve of 70 and above is an A and 60 above is a B and so on, which seems nice but can only help you so much. AVOID HIS CLASSES!!!!
Castellani is very intelligent and willing to work with you inside of class and out, that being said his class is difficult. You will have to study outside of class and you wont get a 100 on his tests but he does grade on a curve and he is willing to adapt the curve to the class if the class as a whole is strugling.
Dr. Castellani is a great professor. Attendance is optional but going to class will help you so much in the long run. His tests are difficult but his curve accounts for that. He expects a lot from you, and you will have to work hard to do good in the class, but you will learn so much.
Worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. Everyone I have talked to who has had him, they agree. Really not sure why there are so many 4 and 5 star ratings because cross my heart hope to die he is awful. take care!
I feel he may be too intelligent. To easily dumb it down for students. Very nice person very hard class.
Castellani is a very good professor. You are most likely to get a B no matter what you get on the final. Don't stress over the final! You should work your hardest on the 7 quizzes and the unknowns and knowns. You should use the teachers assistants. They were very helpful and aided to my success in this class.
Do not take this class. It's too difficult for a lower-level class. With that being said, Castellani is a cool dude who is funny and loves what he's talking about, he's just made his class really hard.
Dr. Castellani is a good dude, not a great teacher. He doesn't explain the application of the material in class, so you have to rely on the homework a lot. His tests are hard, but he uses a different grading scale. A 50 would be a C on his tests.
Castellani was a very hard professor. He did not explain the criteria to the class well, he expected you to know a lot. His exams are hard because he is a very picky grader. The only good thing was the homework helped and the grading scale was lower. I do not recommend him if you don't know a lot about chemistry!!
He is a very hard professor, lecture can be heavy, but! He genuinely cares about you and your grades IF you show you care. Meet with him during office hours, ask questions, and be respectful. The one thing I learned the most from him was how to study. Learning how to study is what he wants to show us students. Thankful I stuck with Dr. Castellani.
Dr. Castellani is a nice man who definitely knows his chemistry. However, beware that he does not use Blackboard!! Also, your grade depends almost solely on 4 exams. Do the homework for every chapter, use the practice tests, and read over his notes before and after class to do well! It is ESSENTIAL you go to class to pass although not mandatory.
Dr. Castellani is the head of the Chemistry department at Marshall who knows every nook and cranny of the field of chemistry. His lectures are very fast-paced and his grading is based heavily on exams. He is a great source of information on anything chemistry related, but strongly consider other professors if you are not majoring in chemistry.
Extremely difficult grader. Stingy with assigning points. Only take Castellani if you love chem and do well at it.
Insanely difficult grader. Unless you are a chemistry major, I promise you will regret taking his course. Chemistry is difficult enough to comprehend, then he nit picks for every little thing on a test.
This class was average. Lectures were very dull, and he has no sense of humor. Very impatient. The tests were very difficult, but the homework is relatively easy. Not a good professor if you don't have a solid chemistry background. As long as you study and read, you should be able to pass
I personally took Dr. Castellani's class this semester. He is a great professor if you go about his class in the correct way. Be sure to read the lecture notes and textbook before class. If you are interested in passing the class do not go into lectures mindless. You need to study.
Dr. Castellani was very difficult. The textbook is not required but it was a savior, READ IT. Message him with any questions you have and go to office hours. I recommend having group study sessions and start studying a least a week before the test. The tests are math heavy so you need to learn the math.
A difficult yet rewarding class for chemistry majors. Covers material in-depth and is willing to answer questions both in and out of class. Tests are somewhat difficult as majority of points are free-response. A very involved teaching style that asks students lots of questions and has students discuss with others around them. Ask questions!
Chem majors should take this class because he provides all the important background info for why things happen. His tests are difficult, but they are ok if you study in advance. He provides in-depth notes, so you don't need the book. He's a hard grader, so answer each test question carefully. His class is hard, but it prepares you for the final!
Very good professor to take if chemistry is something you need to use and understand for future classes such as higher chemistry and biology. Very stingy on tests but gives a curve to compensate. Lectures mainly on theory and application but will always work an example problem if you show him one.
Only has homework assignments worth very little points and massive tests. Grades the tests super hard if it's not exactly what he wants in every way it's wrong. The test hardly follows the previous tests he gives you to study. I was told either good luck or drop the class by every single person I told I had him and boy were they right.
Dr. Castellani is a very tough professor. He graded tests very hard and it must be his way. All other students I talked to said that he was a tough one and that I may need to drop the class. Currently in it, currently struggling.
Dr. Castellani is a tough professor who's lectures are hard to follow. The exams are difficult, but he curves VERY fairly. Castellani assigns a lot of homework that is very useful to figuring out application of the material. He is incredibly intelligent and provides all the tools for success in this class. If you try to pass, you'll pass.
(CHM 111) He's good but tough. If you don't solve equations exactly how he does then you lose credit for the entire question no matter if you got the answer right or not. There are quizzes every day and they severely affect your grade, there is only homework, quizzes, and tests. It's tough but passable. Don't recommend him for non-chem majors.
Worst professor I've had to this day. I had to return 3/4 of my tests because he would randomly take away points. Disrespectful. Should have a chem background before taking him. Refused to give me any points when he graded wrong on my last exam- told me if I truly deserved an A that I wouldn't be concerned over getting the POINTS I DESERVED!
I was confused the whole semester because the way he would explain things. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CHM111. His analogies made no sense and I still have no idea how anyone can pass his class. I currently am but probably not for long. I switched my major and hate chemistry because of him. Also his uncertainty of grading was way too stressful.
I took him for Chem 111, he is lecture heavy and most of the time its homework assignment per section we went over. attendance isn't mandatory but he has quizzes every class. harsh grader, but I feel like it helped me do better. His grading scale is very wonky.
I would never take Dr. Castellani again. He honestly ruined my past semester of college. Grades were not know you were given a formula to figure out your grade. I was given wring test grades, they still have not been fixed. He is not good about emailing back. Does not make his expectations clear. Does not grade quizzes and tests equally.
Coming from a straight A student, don't take Dr. Castellani. After studying countless hours with perfect attendance, I did not do well in this class. He takes off points with out explanation or reasoning and does not want to see you succeed. He doesn't cover material that is on his exams.
Castellani is very understanding but he is a very hard grader and has a different grading system than other professors.
Lectures are not clear, goes off on tangents that do not relate to the lecture, does not explain how to use equations, different grading system than other profs. DO NOT take this man for chem, unless you created chemistry yourself and know it all. He has even stated this his class is impossible to get an A in...so that should tell you everything.
He is a very intelligent man. But his intelligence gets in the way while he is teaching. If students have questions he will act as if the student is ignorant for asking him how exactly he got an answer
DO NOT TAKE unless you have prior chemistry knowledge! Quizzes everyday in class so you have to be ready to dedicate ALOT of time to studying, and it automatically makes attendance mandatory else you'll lose points. Comes off rude when trying to engage the class, he likes to make things intentionally difficult. GRADING SYSTEM IS VERY COMPLICATED.
For an intro to chemistry class, this man does not break down the material for someone to understand who never had a chemistry class. He likes to yap a lot. Be prepared to just sit and listen to him talk for the eniter class. The quizzes every day add up and usually cover what was discussed the prior class. Smart guy, just doesn't break it down.
It is so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one
This class was meant to be one of the easiest science classes, but he made sure it wasn't. He has a very confusing grading system and is very test heavy. There is almost no point to go to his lectures because he explains everything like you have taken 3 other high level chem courses before.
This evil man is singlehandedly the reason I will not be graduating. His class is impossible, and he takes away points just because he feels like it. Even if you provide the correct answer as long as its not the answer he wants he will mark it incorrect. I was supposed to be going to grad school in the summer, but I can kiss that dream goodbye.
Tough professor, but useful if you need chem for future classes. Lectures can be unclear, but leveraging resources like unstuck ai alongside the textbook helps navigate the challenging exams.
Dr. Castellani gets a lot of hate for being a "tough" teacher, but he is not as tough as people say. He gave incredibly interesting lectures, going further than the textbook. He knows his stuff and expects you to know what you're supposed to. If you are looking for a no-effort Chem class, do not take him, but if you want to LEARN Chem, take him!
He puts notes in paragraph form which for me made it more difficult to follow. He also would go over information and then say "but you don't need that for this class" which just made it more confusing for me. He doesn't use blackboard; I've heard from many people that he is one of the worst professors to have for chemistry and I have to agree.
Terrible professor. Actually terrible
This professor by far is the worst professor I have ever had. I have never written on rate my professor until now. he grades impossibly, he is rude, he never helps you solve equations, and never tells you your grade. It is a week from his final and I am almost positive I am going to fail his class.
This course requires a lot of effort. Grade mainly relies on tests, which are graded very tough, but he compensates with a modified grade scale. He doesn't post grades, but provides a spreadsheet to calculate your grade. If you are willing to study and learn a lot you will pass.
After completing 211 it was fair to say I was devastated when Dr. Castellani was the only available professor for 212. This is by no means an easy class. I bombed the first test but after going in and talking with him about it things started to go much better. If you have trouble in his class just go to him, he truly doesn't want to see you fail.
Dr. Castellani was actually one of the worst experiences of my life. Yes, he is highly knowledgable in his field. However, he goes on certain tangents during class that would make it hard to understand him and pay attention in class. He went on several rants about salt. This is not a joke. His notes are confusing as well. I would drop him any day.
