horrible class.boring, he's rude, he pauses a lot. horrible. his tests are nothing like the study guide and its very hard.
He's in a suit every day. He's a little stuffy for such a young guy. I didn't really do any of the reading and got an A. Recommended
At first he seems pretty stiff and arrogant, but his class is super easy. Just attend the lectures and copy down his slides. I didn't even have the book and I'm still getting a good grade. He curves ridiculously on his tests!
Professor Chan is a well kept man and is very organized. He prepares you for his tests with a study guide a week prior and is surprisingly chipper in his political science kind of way. Also, when he says he will have the test/paper graded he will have it done. He's a generous man who works for the class' benefit--you'll like him for sure. : )
This is by no means an easy class but it is doable. attendance is not mandatory but the lecture notes are so important you want to be in class every day. if you`re willing to put in the work on the study guide and really know the information and pay attention in class then you`ll get an A but you can`t just slide by.
This class was ridiculous. The "study guide" is usually 4 pages long and you will have 4 tests and a final. plus two writing assignments up to 5 pages each. its a 100 level class but he treats it like a 400 level. The study guide rarely reflect whats on the test only the essay, which there are usually 4 and he picks one. Take someone else.
He seems to enjoy this topic, but classes seem to drag on FOREVER! If you have a question about an item on the study guide, he is not willing to help and will tell you to ask somebody else. The essay was easy but tests were pretty tough.
easy A. just do the readings and use his slides for his study guide on the tests. if you cant get an A in this class, it's you, not his teaching methods!
The lecture is boring. Tests are hard. Study guide is long and he is always in suit and smile :D.
This guy must have been the most high strung person I've met. He hardly answered questions directly or with any eye contact, he seemed distressed at each lecture, and he rocks a suit each day. He takes forever to send out study guides and power points, and his grading pace is glacial. All in all, I don't find this class enjoyable or enlightening.
I took his class, and I seriously thought it was the most professional class I'd had ever been in. Finally a class that seriously acts like a college class. Straight out Dr. Chan is a very a good teacher. And a "good" means that--- knows his subject very well, enjoys teaching his subject, gives clear information on the subject and what will be on t
I suggest you dont buy the book if you go to class and take thorough notes everyday unless you want to clarify things. Four exams non-cumulative and one assignment which he provides the study guide. I did above average on all my test and still got B in the class so it's kind of tough to get that A. All in all, great prof. and I learned a lot!

Great Teacher! It takes a little bit of effort to get an A, but he's very easy to understand.
Lectures the whole time, there are 4 exams covering about 6 chapters each test. Tests are about 35-40 multiple choice ?'s with 1 or 2 essay questions. Expects you to read prior to class but can get by taking good notes and using the study guide. Curves test. There is only one research assignment. Class can get boring at times but i would recommend
Great teacher! Knows his stuff! If you have a chance to take him, TAKE HIM! I kind of don't like theory, but he made it interesting and something that should be learned. His class is a little hard, but it is worth it because he just knows so much! His class is pure lecture, which makes it a little difficult, but if you study, you are good to go!
Honestly, Dr. Chan knows the material but does not enjoy teaching. He is very rigid and unfriendly. If you ask a question in class he makes you feel stupid. He silences anyone that does not share his views. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I disagree with the positive comments below. Chan is not helpful or patient. He makes fun of you if you ask a question in class. I do not recommend this person. If you want to learn something take it with someone else.
Great teacher. Sraight lecture, 1 midterm 1 final, each had about 5 essay questions. If you take good notes and memmorize his lecture youll get an A. He curves tests and takes attendance. Easy on the Eyes. Never heard him demean anyone with a question.
Great professor. Very, "professional" and well spoken. I highly recommend him.
Very disrespectful. Do NOT take.
Worst professor I have ever taken. His reading material is way too much for a lower level course. He takes forever to grade and post guides. His exams are very confusing. He teaches with such bias that seems he wants to impose his views on you. He is unclear about what he wants. Avoid him at all cost if you really want to learn something.
he considers any course above 200 upper division. so this is no simple class. it wasnt exactly difficult but it was changeling. you need to read the book, study and participate. if you attend class and listen, you'll pass. it's basically a college class and he treats you like college students. not an easy A, but he is definitely do-able
Professor Chan is a great professor. I would read the reading summary from Sparknotes before class, saved me a lot of time since the assigned readings are pretty long. He gives SGs before exams. My suggestion, DO IT before exam review so you can ask him q's on the ones you dont know. The only negative about this class is he takes attendance.
Prof Chan is an okay professor. The material wasn't too difficult and he gives pretty good notes. The exams come straight from lecture. Pointless purchasing book. I studied from the SGs and did really good... I HATE that he based 15% of the grade on "participation" aka if youre in class AND on time. If it wasnt for that I would have gotten an A.
come to class and pay attention; and you'll pass. when taking the exams, he wants HIS words from the lectures. even if you doze of in class but still do the readings; you can still answer correctly on the exam and get it wrong if you dont use "his" words. he's ehh about responding to emails. he'a a jerk during office hours. avoid if you can.
He might seem a little awkward at 1st but he has great diction. He speaks in a way that engages u and uses pop culture/ current events to illustrate his examples. Unintentionally funny. Made me laugh plenty of times. Very intelligent so don't bs him. Not hard but ITS COLLEGE so u actually have to earn your grade! SUPER HANDSOME and amazing.
Chan is basically a philosopher himself. He knows the material frontward and backward. His lectures are complicated but VERY helpful if you pay attention. If you are the student sometimes tunes out or doesn't show up for class, you will be frustrated and do poorly. Show up and take good notes and you will be fine.
Dr. Chan is an excellent professor. He knows what he wants and tells you exactly what he wants you to answer on his tests. They are all essay questions but they are relatively simple. It's not an easy A, but it's certainly possible if you attend the lectures and take good notes.
This is a lower division and yet it is harder than all of my 400 level courses. He impose his idea on the different topic and if you do not agree with them then its an automatic F. He do offer study guide, but it doesn't really help. I would highly recommend not taking him.
He's a pretty awesome professor that really knows his stuff. I took him twice and both classes had a lot of material that you will need to learn. Tests are pretty hard but he gives you a study guide and if you pay attention to his lectures and take good notes you should pass just fine. I would definitely recommend him for any Pol Sci class.
It seems like Chan grades based on whether he enjoyed lunch earlier; there is little consistency. Read and take good notes, but it won't necessarily translate into a good grade. Being a good student doesn't matter. Despite this being a lower level 200 class, he treats it like a senior seminar. He's not bad guy, but I would NOT take him again.
I'm surprised we learned about the law of duality in a politics class.
Class isn't too difficult. Be prepared to do one of two things: 1) Read the books or 2) Pay attention in lecture.
political theory is a hard subject but professor chan breaks it down to an understandable level. His lectures are very detailed and almost identical to the readings. Reading the text is like a summary of his lectures which is nice. Tests are tough, all essay tests. He looks for details and makes you work for a good grade. Show him you understand.
While Chan is incredibly intimidating and probably one of the most challenging professors I have ever taken, I would take him again. He's so passionate and interesting. However, lectures are killer. You cannot lose focus for a second because the tests are based completely off his words. Stay focused on him and you should be golden.
Took him for POSC303 and it was the hardest class I've ever taken. The tests are all free response and you must answer everything precisely. Tests are based off lectures, missing one class is killer. The material is thought provoking and is super interesting if you're into it. Dr. Chan is challenging but I would 100% take one of his classes again.
political theory is a hard subject and professor chan tries to make it as clear as possible. Attending the lectures are a MUST if you want to pass the class. tests are all free response and very specific. Reading helps clarify but its not necessary to passing.
Staying focused is near impossible - his lecture style will drain the life out of you if you don't enjoy it. Grading wasn't too bad but I would overall avoid if possible.
I have taken Professor Chan 4 times and got good grades. I honestly think people are exaggerating. We are in college you do have to work for your grade. I didn't buy the books simply took notes. The test are all based on notes and they are essay questions. He curves a lot as well and he is passionate about political theory. I would take him again.
3 writing exams which are not easy but not hard the Study Guide REALLY helps, random class assignments & sometimes quizzes, you have to go to class & participate. 1 final paper at least 5 pages.
I'm not going to lie but this class was really difficult, but it was also enjoyable. Make sure you pay attention during his lectures. He tells you what you need to know for the test. It's a hard class but it's not impossible.
Great professor and very engaging lectures. If you show up to class and take notes on what he says and emphasizes in class you'll do well. He'll tell you very clearly what he's looking for in your essays so just pay attention and you'll pass just fine. Not a class you can just skip and expect to pass. You'll have to work a bit but nothing strenuous
The way he lectures is very confusing but the subject is also confusing itself. Would not take again. Would rather eat glass.
he doesn't post any lectures online & he takes attendance, so go to class & take good notes. 1 midterm, the final & 1 term paper. the final is cumulative. he gives study guides for the exams, they're both free response. he curves A LOT on the exams though, like a full letter grade. not an easy subject, but def would recommend!
By far the hardest but best professor i have had. I have taken him 4 times and did great all the time. Dont need the book, i never used it. Pay attention in class and take good notes. He curves A LOT! like a whole letter grade. He is unintentionally funny and has great diction.
He gives good lectures, but if you fall behind he won't be there to help you. If you need further explanation on anything you're out of luck. Taking good notes is a must otherwise prepare to read a lot. He curves your tests and provides studyguides, but nothing else as far as help. Would highly advise against taking a class w/ him.
Two tests and two small papers. He dictates the entire lecture so take detailed notes. He speaks in an odd manner and spit gathers in one side of his mouth which can be disturbing. Be aware that he looks for HIS words in your essay question responses. There aren't many poli sci theory classes to choose from but if possible avoid Chan.
This is the most difficult GE I have ever taken. The tests are curved but they are really hard. There is a long paper that none of the other POSC 100 classes have. His voice is extremely annoying and nasaly. . You have to show up to lecture because he doesn't post the powerpoints online. You really only need the textbook to study for short answer.
Chan isn't an easy professor but he is a great one, with really informative lectures. You have to study for this class and read everything assigned in order to get an A. A lot of classes you can breeze by not doing readings and cramming. Chan isn't one of those professors and because of that I learned so much in this class, definitely worth taking.
Taking Dr. Chan clinched my decision to major in Political Science. He is brilliant, articulate, and well-versed in political theory. You MUST attend class or else you will fall behind. Take VERY thorough notes. He can seem intimidating, but he is always willing to answer questions during and after class. He can be unexpectedly funny at times.
not easy As, I enjoyed POSC212 & 301 w/ him! 1 short (5 page) essay & 2 or 3 tests that are free response most of the time. Gives study guides, they are helpful but not exactly the same as the tests so make sure you understand the concepts of each thinker. VERY helpful in office hours, esp for the essay. Read the books, & you'll get at least a B
Professor Chan's class was lecture heavy but his lectures can be dry and aren't structured in a manner that will help you for his EXTREMELY difficult exams. Gives you a study guide but it isn't very much help as it is very broad and does not encompass all the material on the exams. Assigns tons of reading and expects you to know EVERYTHING.
This is not an easy class but you will learn a lot, especially if you like Political Science. His classes are lecture heavy & the reading is mandatory. My only gripe is he doesn't update grades on BeachBoard. But Professor Chan knows his stuff and his helpful when you have questions. So far this has been my favorite class I've taken but it is hard.
He is an amazing teacher, and can be hilarious. There is two books you need to buy, and he assigns readings and can give pop quizzes (i never read for this class and thankfully he never gave a pop quiz). MUST: GO TO CLASS, it is mandatory and he doesn't use ppt. he just writes on the board. Take detailed notes, and do the study guides!!
Talks AT students for 75 minutes, but is a smart guy and knows the material he teaches very well. Ask lots of questions and do the reading. Very strict attendance.
Lectures and study guides are broad. There is so much material to read, and the tests are so specific that you MUST READ all of the readings. Amounts to hours of reading to get an A or B. Also a tough grader and strict about attendance. Dont take if looking for an easy A or even B. Take someone else for Political Theory if you can.
He micromanages the classroom. As an adult who pays for their own courses, you're not permitted to use the restroom during lecture otherwise you're marked absent. He often goes on a tangent about political affiliations. If you're a person of color, be aware of subtle racial innuendos to demonstrate an ill advise point. Horrible Professor!
I know why hes hated but hes great. 3 exams(70), termpaper(20), and some assignments(10). Cant BE LATE for more than 3 classes, really strict and a bit intimidating, not mean. Tries to challenge people's beliefs (ex:is equality good?) Not a hard grader but his tests are. KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE MATERIAL. Get on his goodside/participate. Lot of reading
he takes his class in a philosophical direction, i hope you like Plato!
Professor definitely hates his students and wishes to weed out the students who don't wish to be Political Science majors. Class is lecture heavy and the tests are graded super hard. Professor Chan is clearly knowledgeable on the subject, but be warned the class is difficult if you don't pay close attention.
He is well versed with political theory and does challenge students beliefs and make them question things we've been told our whole lives (everyone is equal, democracy is good.) The only problem is he does this with an attitude and arrogance that discourages anyone from really participating and saying what's on their mind. Read and listen carefully
Best Political Science professor! Insightful and thought provoking. Attending lectures is paramount to being successful in this course. Very clear about what you need to do to get an A. Go beyond surface level and show analytic ability. All written midterms/final and a term paper. Curves tests.
Two words: Awesome class! Dr. Chan knows his political philosophy and creates interesting lectures that grabbed my attention the whole time. His tests are not easy and they require to be very specific so create enough time to study. But everything comes from the lectures and make sure to apply the information to other situations.
If you want to sharpen your critical thinking, challenge your preconceived notions, and expand your knowledge of political theory/philosophy, then do yourself a favor and take as many courses with him as possible. Dr. Chan's lectures are what all educators should strive for: engaging, challenging, thought provoking, and occasionally hilarious.
His lectures are okay very informative but main point that he is trying to get across will be lost. He talks in a snarky arrogant manner if you keep asking questions he will refrain from calling on you after a while. Typically contradicts himself which is why his main point become lost. The exams are extremely difficult, other than have fun.
Dr. Chan is brilliant at explaining political theory. It is obvious that his personal interest in the subject is deep and wide and it shows in his lectures. The Modern Political Theory class is heavily based on lecture. Thus, attendance and note taking is mandatory but is also the key to earning an A. I would take this class again any time.
Professor crams so much information within the semester time. You will need to study a lot. His expectations are high. Tests are multiple choice but majority of stress are from the short answer section. He's a tough grader when it comes to not writing the details he wants. Readings are a lot as well. Save yourself and avoid this class if you can.
beware him at all costs
Dr. Chan is amazing!! I took two of his theory courses plus Jurisprudence. I mean, taking a professor 3 times says quite a lot. Yes, he makes you work for the grade. He means well. He actually pushes you to learn and absorb the concepts. If you give it your all you will be fine. Otherwise, don't bother. He is overall he's an amazing professor!!
Hes a good professor up until we went into shelter at home orders then he dropped off the face of the earth. No zoom meetings to help us break down dense readings and assignments every week. Assigned more work than usual expecting the same quality of work, when he hasnt lectured since we left school. Only teaching Ive received now are articles.
Professor Chan is definitely passionate about POSC, but a little too passionate for a 100 level course. This is probably the hardest GE I've ever taken. Class isn't mandatory but you won't pass the tests if you don't show up. He does not post his PowerPoints online. Book is NOT necessary, only his lectures are. 3 exams, 1 final & 1 paper (easiest).
Prof. Chan has mixed reviews and I honestly tried to avoid him, however, after he unexpectedly replaced Prof. Morton I was stuck with him. I decided to remain in his class and it turned out to be a great decision. His expectations are high, but I learned more in his 212 class than most others. Take him, its worth it and youll learn a lot.
the worst experience of my freshman year. all online, but NO zoom calls. he just throws EXTREMELY long-winded lecture videos at you and expects you to remember EVERYTHING for his exams. he also is terrible at explaining a task/question. too wordy and more complicated than it it needs to be
Very nice and clear lecturer however he is a busy Professor so I wouldn't ask very much from him. He's not one that'll help you with very many questions or anything outside of the class.
Honestly this really wasn't one of my favorite courses. If you're an independent learner, you would like this class because there is just about no contact with the professor or any students. You get graded on so little that if you fail one of the tests, you're done for. The material is just reading and online lectures, pretty boring.
Professor Chan did not have any meetings for the class. Mainly asynchronous work but exams are synchronized at the time. Be ready to read your textbook and watch 40 minute lectures each class time. Few assignments and exams were one per 2 chapters or so. Mainly reading and lectures.
This class was definitely interesting but we never met once with him. Every Mondays and Wednesdays we had a video lecture that can range from 20 minutes to an hour so be prepared to be there a while. You can rewatch the lectures to take better notes but after a while he would remove the lectures. Notes/lecture heavy with 3 exams and a final paper.
Prof. Chan posts his 40 minute lectures and doesn't have class meetings. This makes it difficult because questions in a political theory class are imminent. There's quizzes (writing intensive) and exams that can have multiple answers, despite being multiple choice. Be prepared for a lot of note-taking, so use the transcript option of his videos.
Professor Chan never once held a Zoom meeting, and never responded to office hours while rarely replying to student emails. He utilized multiple choice questions during his exams, but would make the answers multiple select, using ambiguous words
Prof Chan does have someone of a bad name but hes honestly not that bad. His in class lectures are very interesting and you do take away alot from the course. Just be prepared to study lots for the test and writing assignments. Not the easiest class to get an A but if effort you will pass
If Dr. Chan is good in person, then it didn't show in this asynchronous class. Almost completely inaccessible due to his Zoom link for office hours not working for the whole semester. I often felt like he didn't exist because he never replied to discussion posts or gave feedback on assignments. Goes out of his way to make tests as hard as possible.
No kind of Zoom lectures throughout the whole semester. Exams are difficult in that he expects you to finish it during class time with about 10 multiple choice questions and 3- 4 essay questions. One of the worst professors I have had in CSULB. Would not recommend. No kind of clarification before the exams.
Bro was really slacking. Although this was an online class because of Covid, he never bothered to show up and put effort into the class. All he did was upload lectures on YouTube. Lectures were hard to understand as he talked too much and original point was lost. exams were difficult. Not to mention hes a really tough grader. Horrible Professor.
This was one of the worst classes I've ever taken. The lectures are long and extremely difficult. The exams are complicated and it feels like the teacher is trying to confuse you. You have exams, quizzes, paper, and a final. Class was online but we never met via zoom. I strongly urge students not to take this class with him.
Very stressful class, professor Chan was not involved with students at all, there was no zoom meeting. Just video lectures, assignments and term paper were not explained just given directions in word documents. You basically teach the material to yourself. Stay away if you can
No zoom lectures, barely any discussion boards, zoom link to office hours don't even work. He would be a good prof if you don't like doing a lot of work, but his exams were so heavily curved for how hard they were. He is an easy grader for the assignments but it seems more like he just doesn't want to read our assignments.
Wouldn't take him again by choice but unfortunately I have to since I'm a theory major. Never held zoom classes & only provided pre-recorded voice lectures which were really hard to understand. Tough grader & did not provide feedback for the final nor for the term paper which were huge % of your grade. Be prepared to teach yourself & hope you pass.
One of the most stressful professors I ever met. During online, he never recorded his lectures, grades really late, slides are terrible (I mean TERRIBLE), and gets sassy to students whenever we have so-called "discussion" during lectures. Avoid him if you can.
If you dont have to take this class, dont. Professor is rude & unhelpful. Lectures are incredibly long winded and strays from text. Exams, a HUGE majority of the grade, are unnecessarily hard and include topics not covered in class. There arent many chances to bring grade up, just exams and maybe 2 assignments. Too stressful for a level 100 GE.
Professor Chan's lectures do not match his exams. The exams are conceptual based not factual. Exam questions and essay questions are difficult to comprehend because he is not clear with the criteria and provides no rubric. He does not record lectures and he is not willing to compromise with students making them feel bad for speaking up.
I have not experienced such stress and disdain for a professor unlike Dr. Chan. He is very knowledgeable, but isnt a forgiving professor. Up to this point, he has curved every test and quiz because he grades too hard. He doesnt naturally engage with students and rambles on and on in his lectures, making it hard to write good notes. Avoid him.
This is the one class where I'm happy to even survive with a passing grade. Chan knows his stuff (from what I can tell), and he is most definitely passionate about what he teaches, but this passion is not contagious (which is tragic in these times of stay-at-home). Get ready to read and suffer through opinions from those who are dead and boring.
Every class is a lecture from a powerpoint w/ some discussion involved. Most of the tests are based on the textbook so passing would be very difficult without it.
I took the honors version of this class and it was challenging to say the least. He did not have a lot of hw at the beginning, but that quickly changed. His assignments are incredibly lengthy, although he does give you the timje to do them. There are like 3 major assignments from what I can remember. This class requires a lot of time and effort.
His class is really interesting and he knows his stuff. He presents both sides of the arguments. You have to go to lectures to understand the material Most of your grade will come from 3 midterms, the final, and the term paper. Use the study guides early and go to office hours. Grading is somewhat subjective
I would not recommend and will never take this class again. He is very very lecture heavy and offer study guides for the exams but are useless. The exams are difficult and very hard to comprehend when taking. He is not a professor you can go up to ask a question bc he will make you feel dumb for asking a question that he has just lectured on.
Honestly this is the hardest class. I have ever taken. I suggest if you do not want to lower your GPA do not take him. I would just avoided him at all costs. His teaching style is not effective. The study guides are useless for the test. The test is structure in a difficult manner to understand.
I don't recommend this professor if you plan on getting an A. He was pretty tough, grading was harsh, and he is rude. Not helpful at all, and throws sass at students sometimes. If you do, you have to attend all lectures, pay the best attention, and take notes. Make sure you really understand the concepts before the exams. Good luck!!
Professor Chan seems really intelligent therefore this class is really lecture-heavy. If you are not able to understand the main points of his lectures, you will get behind. There was not much homework, if at all, but he did seem like an easy grader.
If you can avoid him at all costs, please do so. While you can he is passionate about his job, it isn't a flex to make your class hard and discourage students to not speak up. He is quick to shut down ideas and won let students even finish their sentences. Exams are a large portion of your grade, based on lectures only given in his class.
One of the better lecture classes Ive had at my time at Long Beach. His grading was a bit harder then other professors but it ends up being about the same because it is weighted. I think he gets a bad rap because in academia today professors have a clear left leaning bias which Chan does not show. He gives the good and bad of all ideologies.
These reviews made me scared to take him, but he's not bad. For an honors class, it has a little more work than usual. By paying attention every now and then and skimming through the textbook I could get a basic enough idea of the content to do well on tests. Its true that there's a good amount of reading, but I just skip that and I'm doing fine.
He assigns long and complicated writing assignments when they could be much shorter and still benefit us. He is not clear with test dates. He will ask questions in class and makes people participate
While this class does not have many assignments and attendance is not mandatory; If you want to do good in this class, you have to go to as many classes as possible. Quizzes and test are based off lectures and readings. Not a hard class, but it does require heavy reading and studying, not an easy A class, but not impossible to get an A either.
Professor Michael Chan's teaching is terrible! He springs random quizzes, like one on how a bill is passed, when no one understands. Tests with 15 multiple-choice questions and a 2-page essay in 1 hour are torture. Avoid this class at all costs! Not recommended!
I would recommend his Constitutional Law class classes to anyone who hopes to attend law school. He cold calls which replicates the law school setting, but if you do not know the answer 100% he works with you to figure it out, and understand the justice's thought process. Most of your grade in that class will come from participation.
Took the class Fall23, the course itself is lecture intensive, but if you have a class which cares to participate then it can break it up a bit. He does what he can to make theory fun for the students, but don't be afraid to ask questions or debate a bit because that what makes the class fun. You will need the book for tests and papers
This class way tougher than it had to be, considering the basic subject. He had clear lectures, but his exams were extremely difficult. The fact that they were curved helped a lot. Not an impossible to get an A if you study, but not at all easy. Would spring random pop quizzes when people were confused. Overall not a bad guy, just a hard grader.
This class was the hardest class I have taken in all my college years and it was only a 200level class. Chan is a very, very hard grader. You never know how you stand in the class b/c he doesn't update canvas. AVOID TAKING HIS CLASS. His class constantly had me worried. He provides study guides but are not reflective on what's actually on the test.
He is a good professor, but just note that his personality isn't for everybody. Yes, he can be pretty rude sometimes, but ultimately this guy knows his stuff and can teach pretty well. He does not post slides online and you are required to go to class for the assignments, but he does curve grades quite generously. Take him if you need the credit.
tests are not THAT hard in my opinion study guide is ok refresher. Doing the proper readings and attending lectures will make studying for exams sm easier. like you will do bad if you don't show up to class. however, it is inconvenient that he does not post your grade on canvas :/ this was my hardest class this semester tho
Professor Chan is a cool person and try's to make the class interesting, you can pass his class by following the readings and going to all the lectures however his tests are never equivalent to the lectures which makes this class a bit hard. Overall, he's not a bad guy nor professor but you have to be academically motivated to take this class.
You should show up, lectures and assignments are not posted online. His vibe: condescending, unapproachable, occasionally funny. Will cut you no slack. Most people did really poorly on assignments/tests but he curves. You need textbook for some assignments. Strict about random things. Lectures very similar to textbook content.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He just reads off of slideshows, attendance not mandatory but refuses to post slideshows & gives paper assignments + tests in class so you won't get any credit or be able to do anything if you don't show up. His exams & assignments are hard but curves. His voice is so monotone and boring. Only plus is no homework except term paper.
All Proffesor Chan did was read off of slides that he wouldn't even put up on canvas. Makes easy concepts so unneciasrly difficult. His greaidng is insanely tough and he is not understanding what so ever. Tests are hell on earth and the only thing saving us is his curves. Wording of questions on test make you get it wrong. DO NOT TAKE.
Professor Chan's class is challenging, but engaging if you put in the effort. Attend lectures, do the readings, and utilize helpful study tools like Unstuck study along with the provided study guides. It's a tough class, but manageable with diligence.
Nothing is on canvas. All assignments are in class. Exam every 2-3 chapters w flash card cheat sheet. makes everything insanely difficult but curves. in class assignments are given every other class. Study the textbook and you'll be fine.
Class was hard but I learned a lot.attend class having briefed all cases bc he loves soc method(big part of grade)! Take very good notes about the briefs for the exams and understand cases/analysis (the big picture). Not an encouraging prof but youll do well if you: brief cases well+ answer when called+ take good notes for cheat sheet for exam
Professor Chan can be somewhat helpful when you ask for help, wouldn't say harsh grader but the tests are a bit hard and require much studying. He's always looking for specific points he says in lecture so write everything down. Other than that, he's lowkey chill and funny during lectures.
W Teacher gave me such a wonderful grade
He has a dry sense of humor and can be entertaining at times. Participation is crucial, as he calls on students randomly (2 passes per semester allowed). The class is very repetitive and focuses only on Supreme Court cases. Midterm + final are in-class with a cheat sheet allowed. There is also a term paper. Expectations are unclear, but he curves.
If you want to go to law school, then Chan is sincerely a must-take. While being cold-called might be intimidating -- it's a favorite of his -- it's exactly what you will encounter as a law student. Cold calls are also primarily done to help expand your knowledge of the cases, so they are ultimately to your benefit. If you can take him, you should.
