If you need to take History because it's a requirement, then I recommend taking Colling. One of the best and most helpful teachers I have had. The work is not difficult if you read your material and learning is fun in this environment.
He is a easy teacher, if you really need to take a history class. Take him, you don't really need to study. Homework is not hard. Just a book report, event people. Turn a page of short essay every week. Go to the final review and that's it~!!
Great professor! If you show that you care about your grade, he will really help you. Participate in class and get yourself known!
Very understanding teacher, Cool Teacher
Take him, Do your work and that is it, not too much work
Nice professor, very helpful. He wants to help students to learn about what happened in history. just go to class, take tests and write a page of book report and 3 pages of research paper, then you can get an A for sure.
Extremely clear on the content material.Utterly helpful, understanding and smart.work is very fairly distributed throughout course.Tests and assignments are fair, not hard. He is an excellent professor. Best one I've ever had!
The greatest professor ever. He is very interesting and knowledgeable. He is very relaxed and utterly helpful. He grades more reasonable than not. Read book/report, notes on reading material and final. He is pleasing to the eyes-very attractive. Never a dull moment! I give him an A+++
Proffesor knows his stuff, and very smart, easy class!
Colling is one of those prof. that you never quite forget about. He is interesting and makes all the material fun. He is very understading and will help a much as possible, Will go the extra mile to help you learn. The material is fairly presented and he does not give much homework. Did I mention he's attractive? why.... yes, he is!
rEAL COOL AND MELLOW TEACHER
This teacher was very interesting and knows how to do powerpoint without putting you to sleep! I enjoyed his class. Just do your readings and write good essays. Lets you ocassionally use notes for tests!! Great lecturer!! Funny snd calm man! You will learn!!!
Professor Colling is a very intellectual guy who makes history way more interesting than I thought it would be. I never thought I enjoy history until I take this class. It's a summer course so its almost 2 hrs long but time flew by fast cuz he's lectures are interesting. Great professor! Take him if you want to learn and not get bored.
He is a nice teacher, he will teach you how to use power point also....haha...
Prof. Colling is a nice guy, but his class is a bit redundant. You have to do a research paper and present it via Powerpoint, but it is really easy because he guides you through it. If you are not a history major, I would take his course. If you are history major, I would take someone like Arias who is a bit more indepth.
This man makes you want to stay in class. Loved his lectures and the willingness to show you how to use power point for class. Geat and kinda cute!
HE MAKES HISTORY FUN! AS LONG AS YOU PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS YOU WILL PASS HIS CLASS FOR SURE. THE EXAMS ARE FAIRLY EASY AND THE REPORTS ARE FUN TO DO. HE IS A GOOD PROF.
GOOD PROF., GIVES GREAT LECTURES AND TEST ARE SIMPLE IF YOU PAY ATTENTION. BOOK IS REALLY NOT USE MUCH AND HIS REPORTS ARE FUN TO DO. TAKE HIM AND FOR SURE YOU WILL PASS.
I love Mr. Colling! He pushes students to reach their fullest potential! He's the nicest & most honest teacher on campus...he also challenges students to think outside the box.
EXCELLENT TEACHER CALM AND CLEAR ENJOYS TEACHING. VERY EASY TEXTBOOK NOT USED I DIDNT BUY ONE.I RECOMMEND ANYONE TO TAKE HIS CLASS.
I love Mr. Colling. His lectures are so much fun and interesting, you learn a lot. He is very helpful. TAKE HIS CLASS! Tests are easy as long as you show up, pay attention and take notes. He's handsome too.
great teacher, this guy knows his stuff. Highly recommended for histry classes! As long as you do your work you will get the easy A
Prof. Colling is one of the most dynamic professor @ ELAC! His class is relatively easy, and he is an extremely brilliant individual who will teach you a great deal! I highly recommend him, his class is easy, but I urge you to take Arias if you are a History Major if not take Colling his class is a breeze and very entertaining!
Very good professor, he is not strict, plus he lets you use your notes on the midterm and final. I recommend anyone to take Mr.Colling plus he is always willing to help his students, I passed his class with an A. Plus anyone can pass it with an A.
i love professor colling! i'm currently taking his history 1 class and it's pretty interesting. there are vocabulary quizzes every class meeting, but they're only for attendance purposes. midterm was pretty easy. it consists of 2 essay question, got a perfect 50/50! the final will consist of 100 vocabulary words from the quizzes. awesome professor!
he gives a 10 word vocabulary quiz at every class meeting. he doesnt let you out early. grade consist of midterm final, and quiz grades. he talks about interesting topics and lets us talk in groups about the topic. I got an A. overall, i would recommend him.
Colling is such a wonderful professor. Even though the course work is easy, his class is enjoyable--I've never learned so much about history in my life (History is my least favorite subject btw). We had a quiz every week over terms that we chose, a midterm consisting of multiple choice and essay, and a final over all the terms. Take must take him!
real easy to pass if you have a bit of an idea of history youll pass i didnt use the book but i am a history major and i know my stuff. it is highly recommended that u spend time with it cuz his midterm is an essay question final is easy its just a test on terms. lectures are real fun, you are actually interested. term paper included, but fun too.
Best taecher ever. Makes class fun and interesting.
attendance was not required. class composed of quiz (words from the end of lecture that you choose appx 5 words. really simple), final and midterm. midterm was an essay form and final composed of all the words from all of the quiz. one essay. got an A
This class was very very very easy to take. We had to take a quiz everyday but they are very easy because the class just to pick the words. If you find history boring take his class because you won't be bored.
One of the best History teachers I've ever had.
totally recomend this guy, he makes history fun, i really didnt like history before until i took his class, quiz everyday but they are super easy, and midterm n final are also a piece of cake.
Collings is pretty cool, straight forward, rarely any hw, just read book and take notes good because your gonna need them in the midterm/final. final and midterm are easy. Really recommend this guy
I love this teahcher! he is so awesome and really is a wonderful enigmatic speaker. He teaches history so well. take him if you want to learn. however take lots of note, if possible buy a recorder to hear and rewrite his notes. great teacher
Awesome teacher! He's very passionate about what he's teaching making the class much more interesting!
take the notes, memorize the terms get your A, can't believe some fu*king 'tards had to cheat in his class..teacher makes class fun, take him you'll be happy you did.
I know he has been rated as the easiest history teacher in ELAC. However, he has CHANGED. He wanted everyone to have UCB or UCLA standard. He even said so. Make sure you have very good writing skill before you attend his class. I was one of the few got an A in his midterm because I worked really hard for it. Besides, He is a fun, good teacher
He is a really great teacher who makes history interesting, and you will learn a lot from him. However, you have to a lot of work, and with a good writing skills. If you want to learn something, I recommend him, but if you want an easy A take another teacher.
I took this history class online. It was all reading and analyzing. Kind of easy, but at the same time it was hard. I learned a lot, and got a new perspective of the U.S. I enjoyed this class, but if you think taking an online class would be super easy then you're in for a surprise!
Ranks up there as one of the best instructors I've had in my college career. He gives a unique perspective of modern history, and his lectures are extremely engaging. I wish all instructor where this great.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR. SWEET-HEART.WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
Great professor take lots of detail note pay attention and you will Learn a lot about the past years he will Be lecturing on very nice and helpful when you need it I recommend you take his class yrod30 :)
Hands down, the best history teacher I've ever had. His class is super easy, there are only 2 essays and one of them is optional, & weekly quiz's. The final is difficult, it includes 65 multiple choice, essay, & document analysis. Easy A!
Quiz everyday. Just remember the keyterms he mentions in board.Take home mid-term, and just one optional research paper about7-10pages.Remember to find as many resources as you can and don't copy from any resourses. Final is hard, MC, matching, essay, data analysis etc.Overall not an easy A,but still ok as an ESL student.
His lectures are interesting. He quizzes vocabulary every week. Had two essays done. Final is pretty hard tho. Overall good teacher.
I really like him - Awesome and fair guy. But the class was too stressful for me. No notes or textbook to go by, just had to write down everything he said, weekly quizes & his ppt slides sucked (couldn't read the font and weren't useful). If you have a good attention span & have a real interest in religion you should enjoy this class.
very good proffesor
This guy ranks as one of my all-time favorite professors at ELAC! His lectures are very interesting, and makes them enjoyable, and that's coming from a student that's not too crazy about history. However, his class is not easy, so if you're looking for an easy A, don't bother. Either way, he's still really awesome!
Mr. Colling is one the most interesting teachers at Elac. He teaches history with a passion and clarifies the foggy spots in history. He will make you work for your grade though. In order to do the 7-10 pg. research paper you need at least 2 months or you can forget it. There's also a 5 pg. midterm, weekly quiz's and an in-class final essay.
He gives such great lectures! He is so insightful and passionate about his work. I took his honors world religions class and I have to say, I learned a lot. I left his class feeling motivated and inspired to continue my education. There is a lot of time for discussion in his class, so make sure to ask questions and voice your opinions!
I loved it! History is my favorite subject and he did not disappoint. Super easy class. He gives quizzes every day on terms from the lecture before(easy, 5 questions). Great story teller and shares cool experiences. He did not look like what I expected a history teacher to be. Oh! and know the new deal programs (20 extra points if you learn them).
He is an amazing educator . he does tend to ramble of in lectures but it is so insightful of todays events and how it is related to the topic .
He's extremely helpful and inspirational. He has a different but great way of teaching and he really stimulates your brain to think out of the box :)
One quiz every time you see him from previous lecture, all vocab questions. 5 essays and one you do in a group. Took him in Fall 2015 it was pretty straight forward what he expected from students. Once a week class was foe about 3 hours and he gave us a 20 min break. Two books needed, you oddest really have to read them.
Great experience! Walked in not liking or caring about history to leaving with a passing grade now knowing a lot in details. Great professor I recommend him. South Gate campus.
He is one of the only teachers who has sparked my interest in history! He's very animated and passionate and I loved hearing his stories and ideas! He was also the only teacher I needed a book for.
BEST TEACHER EVER HES VERY UNDERSTANDING AND ALWAYS HELPS VERY INSPERATIONAL ALSO AND FUNNY
Great instructor with a lot of insight on what he teaches. You should be reading the book but honestly you can pass without it if you take notes of his lecture. A midterm take home essay and 30 question quiz that's timed online. In class final with a 30min take him quiz online for final. I thought I wasn't gonna pass but I suprisingly did
Professor Colling is so passionate about what he teaches you cant help but to pay attention at his lectures loved his class everyone should definitely take him
You will not use the book at all. There are quizzes in the begging of the class.
Took this class over summer, it was more difficult than I expected. You actually need to read the documents and text along with the lecture slides. 2 MC exams, 30 Qs for 30 mins. 2 discussions which are treated as mini essays and a midterm + 2 final essays. Professor seemed like a cool guy, wish I took it in person.
Very reasonable professor, he is always willing to help you with anything that you need. There is a 3 point quiz at the beginning of every class that adds up to 75 points at the end. Must put in the work to pass class.
I never liked my history classes during high school, but when I took him, man it changed my mind. His lectures were very amazing and you can see how into he was.
Great teacher! Knows exactly what hes talking about. You just have to pay attention. One of the best professors Ive got this semester
The thing that impressed me the most about him is how vastly knowledgeable he is of history. This makes the lectures (presented on PowerPoint) interesting. No midterm, no final, just a research paper on a U.S. history topic of your choice but you pretty much have the entire semester to do it. My advice is DONT leave it all til the end like I did!
Awesome professor. Will help you with anything if you don't understand. He knows what he's lecturing. 3 Question vocabulary pop quiz on previous lecture. Remember the 50 states (test 2cd week of class). 1 Research paper that he guides you through the whole class. midterm and final multiple choice on canvas. Nice, Friendly and understanding.
Really nice professor who knows his stuff. Took this class over the summer and it was a lot of reading (3 different books, 1 optional) but with few assignments. I suggest reading all assigned material in order to get the highest grade possible. Straightforward syllabus and overall amazing and insightful class; he really cares about your education.
Took Online History 12 Summer 2020. It's an easy class with a lot of reading. Has discussions and two extra credit assignments. PowerPoints are well done. Consists of Midterm and Final and multiple choice questions. Final Essay 5 pages long. Overall, not bad.
Just finished taking this class Winter 2020. Professor Colling really knows his stuff and has answers to all your questions .You have a discussion due every week as well as a short quiz every Sunday based on the weeks readings. Midterm was a 4 page essay + exam. the final was 2, 4 page essays and also a exam. Overall great class get ready to read.
Really chill professor. Did not give any hw, his lectures are so informative. He really knows history. Take him but be advised that there are 3 essays that you have to write, cite, and work on to get a decent grade in the class. I would definitely take him again.
He was amazing! His knowledge and personal views on the world, religion and politics are above and beyond what anyone can ask. Class was intriguing, entertaining and educational. I particularly enjoyed his mid-lecture rants on his life experiences or debates with other students. This man cares about you and everyone around you! TAKE! HIS! CLASS!
He is an exceptional professor! TAKE HIS CLASS FOR ANY HISTORY SECTION HE IS OFFERING. He truly cares for his students and gives excellent feedback on essays. There is a lot of reading that you'll do on your own, but if you keep up with it, you'll be fine. Participate during the lectures so you can get the most out of them.
He teaches you a lot about history that's the real hardcore truth, and he's not afraid to say it! His class was very nice! The quizzes/tests were super easy, it's just the few essays you have to do that are very important to your grade. Make sure you cite correctly, if not, it's just a zero. He's very understanding and kind too! Sweet professor!
Prof Colling's class is traightforward. The quizes and exams were easy and his 3 papers took effort and he graded them tough. Politically he identifies as a marxist and is out there. He has some extreme views but respects you if you have opposing views and will have a friendly debate. He is a good guy who genuinely cares. Highly reccomend
Although he is fine generally, he is a tough grader. I don't know how to please him with the essay and discussion. The course is not hard, some quizzes (not quite hard), and some discussions need long paragraphs. Although the plagiarism score of my essay is only 9%, he doesn't accept it.
Great Professor! Had to do a few short essays, multiple choice quizzes super easy, and a mid-term. The final was 2 essays that you should prepare in time! The class was interesting and straight to the point. You will do a bit of reading but it is all to your benefit.
Do the work, study, and do the extra credit, and I'll pass his class with an A. At first, it will feel overwhelming, but he helps you out through the process overall his very supportive.
I took him for HIST12 in the summer and there are only a few assignments but he is not too hard of a grader. Offers one EC essay. Midterm is an essay and MC test. Final is two essays and a MC test. Easy exams are 30 questions in thirty min. Do the readings. Gives good feedback on writing. Completely doable class for the summer, even if you work.
He's a professor who challenges you. He's a very tough grader -- I think he wants you to read between the lines a lot of the time. Definitely passionate about what he teaches which is great. It's a hard class, so read everything ahead of time and get assignments done on time. Overall he's nice, just a bit harsh when it comes to writing assignments.
Lots of reading but he gives small assignments throughout the course. Only two small essays (300-600 words) and then essays for midterm and final.
Professor Colling had interesting topics and always pushed his students just the right amount. I actually loved his class, and I loved all of his essays. The Final was a big essay (about 8-11 pages combined), but he gives wonderful feedback and lists interesting reading materials. It sucks there was no outside research allowed, but overall, 10/10!
Michael Colling teaches religion but will attack you directly if your religion clashes with his. Given he is an atheist and had made no secret of his disdain for Christianity, I felt very targeted by him as I am a Christian. Don't take him if you value your education. There are great professors in this subject and he is not one of them by any means
Very helpful teacher and will tell you stories non-stop that he almost forgot about the class. He help us and my classmates on how he wants the essay will look like and give away tips to pass the class. If you want to talk about political views then he is the perfect person to have a conversation with. 100% will recommend!
This class is somewhat complicated. The material itself isn't very difficult, but there is a lot of reading, especially for essays. Lectures are detailed but often go off track, causing the class to fall behind. He is a tough essay grader and very strict about AI. I didn't enjoy his teaching style.
