This Professor far too demanding

I loved this class. I learned so much. If you go to class you will get a good grade!!!
very very good teacher... i hate history, but conlin got me excited about learning about it.
Best teacher in the history department!!

REALLY REALLY BORING. DONT LOOK FOR ANY CLASS INTERACTION IN THIS CLASS CAUSE HE JUST LIKES TO HEAR HIMSELF TALK!
WOO HOO!!! HE ROCKS! You learn a lot in the course and he adds that extra "7%". (Plus he's a real hotty)
Double talks a lot. Will say one thing about your grade to you, then your transcript at end of quarter will say another, not to you benefit. Enter class with GPA caution.
Very easy class.Got a 4.0.He gives study guides for exams making it very easy.Just be sure to attend class everyday.A lot of notes to take but easy to understand.U watch movies & take fill in the blank quizes while watching the movie.EASY CLASS.TAKE HIM!
History isn't my subject, but e made it interesting, very knowladgable. Had a few books to read from which was time consuming and could get boring. Video quizes were nice, get a study partner/group and utilize his study guide before test adn you'll fine
proceed with caution!
Just watch your back!
Great class. He's very passionate about this time period. You'll do well in the class if you go to class everyday, and use the study guides. Be prepared for a little quirky humor and fifty cent words.
he is a good teacher, but requires a lot of reading. i really enjoyed the class.
Annoying-but grow to love him, funny personality! Study guides for tests. Word banks for all tests. Quizes are watch a movie and fill in the blank as you go. There are some extra credit points on all quizes and tests. All notes availible to be copied by students so you don't need to take notes.
Easy class, easy notes, easy tests! Make flashcards and you are good to go. Read the little books, they are important and pretty interesting once you get past the flowery language. Good teacher, you'll learn a ton, he goes at our history from a different angle. Take his class, its awesome!
Three to four overheads worth of note copying everyday! You could get away with not buying the book. Only two tests, the studyguide is a list of about 100 terms. Which the real test only ends up containing half of them! He always goes over class time by five minutes and expects you to stay & listen.
Inconsistent, frustrating, annoying and a total double talker and a huge b*x*-s*x*r.
I had a total crush on him. He is uber-nerdy but obviously loves what he is teaching. Studying is straight forward. Take notes and study the guide he gives and you will do fine. No need to buy the text. Don't skip and you should get an A.
Great teacher. He gives a lot of notes, but he is passionate about the class. He is very willing to help if you need it, & is understanding. There is a lot of info. to consume but he tries not to overwhelm the class.
He enjoys his work, but hes not very practical. Just keep all of your assignments and quizes, he tends to get dissorganized. Im sure you will float on...
Two words, total dick!!
He is full of great information. There is a lot of notetaking and if you show up every day you are bound to do well.
He is ok but, alot of note taking but the in class and movie quizes are super easy but the tests are crazy...
His quizes are easy. His tests totally suck. He gives you a study guide with realistically 350 terms to memorize. Most of the terms have multiple definitions. Unless you have a really really good memory and plan to study 10-12 hours for each test, don't plan on getting a decent grade.
I enjoyed this class. Quizzes are easy. Don't miss them. Showing up to class is important, buying the optional text isn't. Read the required text, it's pretty good. Study your notes a lot before tests, it helps to write sentences with the bajillion terms while studying. Pay attention and you'll do fine.
Very knowledgable and kind. Content to grade harshly behind closed doors so if you think your doing well - you'd better make sure prior to the end of the term.
great professor and very intelligent. I still say he's related to Howard Zinn.
He was soooooo boring, but he could help you out when in need.
he's alright but he's NOT hot
YES!!!!
Conlin is a good prof who knows his stuff backwards and forwards. Make sure that you go to class every day because his tests and quizzes come directly from his lectures. He likes to include geographical stuff on his tests, so make sure you know major rivers, crops, and capitals.
Tests are the hardest I have ever taken, and I'm a history major! The number of terms he expects you to memorize minute things about is horrible. Don't count on a good grade and go to class every single day.
Don't expect help. You most likely won't get it! He is so boring! Thinks a lot of himself--an egomaniac to the 100th degree. Do not expect to get out of class what you put into it. It won't happen. He tells you to your face you are doing FABULOUS. The grade he tells you your getting...won't happen. You get FAR less than you deserve for output
Dr. Conlin is an excellent teacher and is funny and self-deprecating. He is smart, cute, and a cyclist, plus he is friends with Dr. Zhu. He excels in extemporanious rapping i.e. free styling and is making an effort to learn all the slang he can. So quit being playa haters. P.S. he knows what that means.
This class is funny and relevant.
Great teacher! Learned a lot!
He has a real love of his subject that just makes everything fun. Being very knowledgable about the subject is also very helpful.
After graduating i can honeslty look back and hope that he reads this webstie sometime so he know that he was the best professor i had in the history dept. Eastern is lucky to have him as he belongs at a much more prestigous university. Take every class you can from him, Zhu, and Keiswetter they are great.
Awesome teacher. He's great because he loves history, he's excited talking about it and that makes it more fun, easy to follow along lectures. He gives you notes in advance for the lectures so it's easy to keep up. I've learned a lot from him and I hated history. I liked the class a lot and if I had the chance to take it again I would.
Just a great instructor. He knows so much about the Civil War and Reconstruction, and he organized it well in his lectures for class. I'll be keeping all of the 200 pages or so of the lectures he was kind enough to post online in Word format. Be prepared to study and read if you want to do well in the class. Great for people who love to learn.
He is a brilliant teacher and I love his sense of humour. I was worried about the midterm, but if you don't overanalyse or over worry about the tests, you'll do fine.
If he could get past his ego he would be fabulous
Really fun teacher. Took something most of us weren't too interested in and got us into it. He is really passionate about history and it shows.
If there's one professor in the History department who has ZERO ego, it's Dr. Conlin. You get out of his class what you put into it, and he makes his expectations very clear. If you get a bad grade or don't learn anything, it's your fault.
Beware of the papers he has you write. He's very particular about them. He's always willing to help his students.
Extemely good professor. More than willing to help whenever it is needed. All the lectures are posted online for study purposes. His tests are fairly simple if you have attended the class lectures and done the reading. There are no suprises. Would definately take classes from him again.
Probably one of the best professors I've taken. He's really passionate about what he teaches and wants everyone to be just as passionate as him. His tests were fill in the blank with video "quizzes" about twice a week, so attendance is important. Didn't even need the textbook at all.
Extremely professional and savvy.
he always says "due listener" or "dear listener" throughout his lecture, once i noticed its kinda funny how much he actually says it, but he's a nice guy, easy class.
Conlin was the best teacher I've had. The class was easy, but I learned more about history than in any class before. "Is it beer flavored water, or water flavored beer?"
I don;t know if this was just me but i'm pretty sure others who have taken this class feel the same way, that it's bs how much time and effort one must put in to this class to just be stunned at the end of the quarter with a dissapointing grade. The class consists of reading two short novals those are fairly easy aslong as you read them and there a
Nice prof, very helpful, he does require work, but makes the material very interesting. I would take this class again if I could.
Over all, Professor Conlin did a very good job.His lectures were interesting, and his homework while easy, but well thought out on his part. during the entire quarter I did not need to open my text book once, however the other books that came with it were mandatory. I passed this class with no problem, the key lies in showing up.
Conlin is such a nerd! But he its cute how hard he tried to be funny. He is so enthusiastic about history, which makes the class more tolerable! If you do to class, and read the books you will be fine i got a pretty easy 4.0. The finals consist of fill in the blank and chronological organizing.. not too bad. I would take him again if i could!
I took his class last Spring, and I got to say, he is one of the best History professors I've had while attending EWU. This is not to say the others are not any better, but he enabled me to enjoy the material and care about our country's beginnings. He does speak quickly, but luckily he has summaries on the overhead. I highly recommend him.
The first day seems overwhelming, but he is an amazing prof. He puts all the notes in on blackboard and so it's easy to take notes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but we have video quizzes which make up 25% of our grade. Chances for extra credit, and it is all very easy. Easy mid-term, non-cumulative final.
He is my favorite professor thus far. He is easy to listen to and not dry like some profs. Very helpful, you just need to go to his office hours. He puts all the lectures online and gives study guides. I don't see how someone can fail his class.
He cares about what he is teaching and cares about his students doing well. He is a great professor!
Super easy. two homework assignments that take roughly an hour to do. has a midterm and final which are easy and he gives you a word bank two weeks ahead to know what to study. and he has video quizzes that are easy and just pad the grade.
His mid terms and finals are hard, and there is a lot of reading.
Full of really funny corny jokes that always make you smile and very knowledgeable. The classwork/homework is kinda hard, but you just have to DO it and you'll do fine. He's a really cool guy.
Professor Conlin is very knowledgeable. His lectures are quite entertaining with his intellectual jokes, but he goes at a fast paste. The books you read are not to important; if you don't read them, you can still pass the tests.
Professor Conlin was very entertaining. I am usually not a big fan of history, but his class was one of the more interesting classes I've taken. I recommend reading the books. It makes the quizzes easier. Also, it is important to go to class because there are usually between 1-3 video quizzes given per week (very easy fill-in-the-blank).
Frustrating prof. Lacks people skills.
Horrible Professor! He doesnt give u clear answers to your questions and acts like ur stupid for even asking! He talks too fast and its really hard to keep up with him. Im generally a 4.0 student and really struggling to even pass this class! Lots of reading and ridiculous tests for a 100 level class. Avoid Conlin at all costs!!!
Good professer, but I was very dissapointed at how hard he grade the essay you write. He graded like an English teacher so be aware. He likes men more, and will "mess up" on women's papers a lot. His grading scale is RIDICULOUS. 98% is a 3.9 97% a 3.8..ect. I passed all test with high 90% or above 100% because of the essay I revived a 95%.
Professor Conlin is a passionate and hilarious instructor. His classes are challenging but his expectations are not unrealistic. I have taken two of his classes and would gladly take a course from him again. He’s very helpful and encouraging.
Dr. Conlin, in my opinion did a great with this course. His adaptive teaching style was really unique and was useful. The readings were interesting but very long and could probably get away with quickly reading through most of it. I thought he was hilarious, but people bash his humor. Perhaps they didn't have the level of wit to get his jokes.
Dr. Conlin cares about his students succeeding. He is funny and engaging in class. Save all of your old essays because in his 390, Dr. Conlin has you rewrite one of them, making it a great paper. It was eye opening for me and his insightful feedback helped me immensely. Be prepared to suffer through peer edits, however.
I had Prof Conlin for History 110. I Enjoyed his class and would take him again. For the most part as long as you show up to class you will do fine. I hardly did the reading in the 2 books assigned and did just fine in the class. Conlin really cares about the future of his students and I recommend having him as your professsor!
The quarter I took it he was still designing the course. About a third of the class was unannounced documentaries with a fillout worksheet that he always gave you an extra credit point for, so SHOW UP. He is dad-funny and very unassuming. I would love to take another course with him. His lecture voice is engaging and easy to listen to.
I have taken hist 303 and 301 from Dr. Conlin and would like to take every class from him. He is clear, knowledgeable, and tells lots of dad jokes. Super lecture heavy for 301 but easy, given a clear study guide for tests and lax grader. 303 is essay heavy and books are boring, but gives tons of EC and flexible on due dates. showing up is an A.
Conlin loves this subject and his job. For HIST301 there is a LOT of outside reading. 150 pages a week, but it is of a book that is interesting, NOT A TEXTBOOK. As a history enthusiast the books are truly interesting and only sometimes too they get boring to read due to repetition, but overall, class is fun and interesting, lectures are fast pace
He's such a sweetheart, he gives lots of quizes but most of them are from videos which really help your grade, the text books were just novels and the tests were from lectures and videos. You do have to study bit you're given the opportunity to have a note card which is always helpful. He's also really easy to talk to. Definitely recommend
super nice and generally funny guy. but beware he is very disorganized and when you try and ask questions about calendar changes from the syllabus, he says its a one time mistake. has happened three plus times and I haven't even finished the quarter yet
One minute you'll get a message saying Zoom class meeting is canceled. one hour later, another message is sent saying its back on, but you won't get the message till after the meeting is done. Also has no idea how to use the university's CANVAS system so quizzes might damage your grade just because of incorrectly programmed questions.
Professor Conlin is easily the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow, and he's always telling jokes and makes the class fun. He's a very understanding and caring professor and really just wants his students to pass. Offers tons of extra credit, easy A if you attend class and pay attention
Professor Conlin is legitimately the best professor I've ever had. I was struggling with some motivation to turn in a paper and told him it was going to be late. I didn't even ask for an extension, but he gave me one anyway. He offers lots of extra credit and is generally pretty lax on grading. There can be a good bit of work and you should study.
The best professor at Eastern Washington. Not just knowledgeable, and he actually cares about his students. Fully cares and understands what it means to learn and have a life outside. Brilliant and simple class structure, entertaining lectures that you both enjoy and learn from. Dr. Conlin is a good historian, a good man, and a great teacher.
Dr. Conlin is an amazing professor! Hilarious jokes and remarks keep his lectures extremely entertaining. If there was ever to be a professor I recommend taking it would be Dr. Conlin. The class was interesting, does a great job at showing you an in depth history and analysis of Anglo-American Constitutionalism. Would highly recommend taking.
Professor Conlin was an alright teacher up until the last few weeks, I took HIST319 history of soccer. His quizzes are tough to finish in class, they're every Friday. the midterms are also difficult for no reason and weigh very heavily on your grade. And lastly the end research paper he grades extremely hard and the feedback is passive aggressive.
I loved Dr. Conlin, he was one of my favorite professors. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities and you can tell he is very knowledgeable about the subject and passionate about teaching. I looked forward to his classes every day and I will seek out classes taught be him in the future.
