Professor Coote is a really cool guy. He really enjoys teaching not only the material required but also other interesting tidbits of information. I highly recommend taking any class he happens to be teaching. Not only will you learn a lot of information, but you will also enjoy doing so.
Great teacher, very knowledgeable, approachable and down to earth, makes organic chemistry fun somehow.
He is the best professor i have ever had for lab. He was always willing to explain stuff and do whatever was necessary to help everyone understand. He really cares about the students and wants everyone to do well.
Great teacher....Go to his office he will help. recitation is a must. he gos though the test when you go. If you go to all the class times then you will pass... easily
Great professor especailly for lab. Explains everything so you know what you are doing at all times. Always has extra information if you have questions, even with other classes. Very very helpful and realy nice as well. If you have the chance to take him do it!
Took him for my chemistry class this winter, there's for exams and a final. Averages 10-18 questions an exam worth 100 points each. You get one 4-5 point extra credit opportunity on the exams and those are the only grades that are counted for the class. If you aren't a strong chemistry student going into it, it is very difficult.
I had professor Coote for Chem lab and he was great! He was very laid back and helpful. He has a funny sense of humor and is a genuinely kind person. I would take him again.
I was nervous coming into my Chem class, not having taken chem in over 4 years. Go to recitation and you will be in the A-B range on the exams. 4 exams, up to 25 questions each. If you don't know how to do something, go to his office and talk to him. He will go over everything until you understand it. The tests aren't as bad as you'd think!
Chem has always been my down fall, but MR. Coote really cleared it up for me. If you go to class, study your recitation notes along with power points you will get an easy A in the class.
Coote's a good guy. There are 4 exams, around 12-20 questions each. Depending on average test scores, he'll drop the lowest test grade. Had to take the ACS final and everyone we got right was extra credit. Overall, the lectures are long and the material is hard but he does his best and he is always there if you need help. Would recommend to others
Coote is by far the best teacher I've had during my college career. He is easy to follow in lectures, and understands that not all students are good at chemistry. He is always willing to help during office hours and is a very nice guy, but go to recitation!
One of my favorites by far. He makes his lectures easy to understand and goes over them doing examples and connects them to real life. HW was 10 questions for each chapter, then exams are 20-25 questions out of stuff from the lectures. If you study for an hour or two, you'll be fine. Realizes you're human, easy to talk to, funny too!
If you read a bad review for Michael you can rest assured the author of the review didn't do their part to succeed. Tests are not exceptionally difficult, your grade will depend on how much effort you put in. Chemistry is a tough subject no matter who you take, but Coote is a good choice.
Coote is very nice and easy to talk to. You use Sapling (or some other online course) for homework and quizzes. Coote offers a lot extra credit, found on most exams and all homework assignments; possible to hold more than 100%. If the content is new to you though, he is not the best instructor. I still recommend him higher than most professors.
Coote's great, I would definitely take him again. He has print offs of the lectures so you can pay attention instead of writing. Sapling is awful, but that's not his fault. He always tries to make it easier for the students, so he'll make the exams easier. There's extra credit on Sapling and on his exams.
Great professor, I'm taking him again. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
He really knows how to simplify tough concepts to make it easier for anyone to understand. He provides outlines for chapters covered on Canvas to ease note taking. Class/recitation not mandatory but highly recommend attending. Lots of examples done in class and will answer questions. Homework online on sapling. Great professor.
Had Dr. Coote for Organic I lab. Super friendly and explains concepts in depth. Understands that sometimes things don't work out when doing experiments and is willing to help so that you learn as much as you can. Very intelligent and has a good sense of humor. Cares about student's learning, and is overall a great guy. Highly recommend.
Outstanding professor. If you're willing to work, he'll set you up for success!
LOVE him. Great professor who is always happy. Class in generally easy compared to other chem profs/classes. The homework is extra credit and theres extra credit on each exam. Compared to the other classes, his exams are much easier, but no curve. Highly recommend to incoming chem 111 students.
All of the homework and quizzes are on sapling, which is the same for every chem 112 class. Coote explains things really well and takes his time to make sure everyone understands the material. Sometimes his voice can be pretty monotone, making him easy to tune out to and the class goes by slowly, but overall I understood the material the easiest
Wonderful professor that offers a lot of explanation and extra credit. Go to recitation! He pretty much goes over each exam before you take it. Very friendly and easy to get along with. He gives you the equations for each exam and puts his slides on Canvas as well. He makes a difficult class much simpler!
Coote really made chemistry fun. He applies alot of examples to the health field because he knows a majority of his students are going towards that. He offers 40 points of extra credit which does take some time to do but worth it. Not a hard class, 4 exams and a final. He drops the lowest exam.
Coote is a nice guy. His lectures are easy to understand and does practice problems during them too. He drops your lowest test and quiz grade. He offers a good amount of extra credit too. He's probably the best professor I have ever had.
I am NOT a chemistry person and I got over 100 percent in his class. Extra credit on every test with no questions that ever caught me by surprise. You drop your lowest test too, but keep the all extra credit points you score on it. Pay attention in class, ask questions, and you'll be fine. Coote is a funny guy and he's super nice to students.
Easy A class, cares a lot about students and explains concepts very thoroughly.
SUPER nice! Coote's class will be a breeze regardless of your chem experience. He uses lots of acronyms, stories, and metaphors to make the concepts easy to understand and remember. His exams come straight from his worksheets and he goes over each exam the recitation BEFORE you take them! Go to recitation, know your worksheets, and you'll be fine!
Tests kind of hard. Lectures are kind of boring. Lectures are kind of confusing.
He is the nicest professor I have ever had. I highly recommend him. Super easy to talk to and responds quickly to emails. He genuinely cares for his students and wants the best for you. Gives you up to 40 extra credit points. Best professor ever
Easy to understand and know the material he teaches and explains it very well.
Great teacher, drops lowest exam and lots of E/C that will keep your grade up even if you don't do amazing on all the exams. Go to recitation it will help a ton before exams, and he will give you answers to the tests!!
If you fail Coote's class, you're an idiot. This guy is awesome! 4-5 exams depending on time, online homework which is tough but answers can be found online, all online homework is EC. Nothing on the exams are a surprise, the dude is straight forward. He also drops lowest exam, definitely would take him again as he cares about every student.
Professor Coote is hands down the absolute best Professor I have ever and probably will ever have. He used real life examples for everything and was honest with how much we would use the material in real life (if at all). He is hilarious and always accessible. He literally goes over the whole exam in the pre-exam recitation. Go to all recitations!
Prof Coote is by far one of my favorite professors at SVSU. He gives a ton of extra credit opportunities and is always willing to help you understand. If you go to recitation, you will have no trouble in this class.
Coote is by far the best professor I've ever had, he explains things so well, is willing to help if you don't understand in a way that doesn't make you feel dumb, and actually wants you to do well. I had him for chem 111 & 112 and I'm currently in chem 230 and I still go to him for help. Explained what I didn't understand for 2 weeks in 10 minutes
very friendly and welcoming and cares about you individually.
Coote is by far the best chem professor out there! He relates everything in class to real-life examples and puts the time in to ensure you understand the material. If you put the time in and go to recitation you will pass his class.
Dropped this course the previous semester with a different professor. Retook it with Coote and finally was able to thoroughly understand. Was even able to help my friends who were also taking 112 but with another professor. Taking Coote is something i highly recommend.
Ask him about the cold turkey. Simplifies chemistry beautifully. You will not find a better chemistry prof. If you pay attention in class, it will be a walk in the park. Really personal and engaging. His class displays the beauty of creation. His lectures on entropy are the best!
Professor Coote is so kind and understands that his students may not understand chemistry right away. He dumbs it down for you and provides outlines for his lectures. His lectures can be boring, but he tells you what to expect on quizzes and usually provides examples at the beginning of the previous class. Definitely would suggest him for any chem!
Coote is the best. He understands when his students are in a tight situation and helps as best as he can! He has office hours & during COVID times he was accessible through Office IM. He provides descriptive and specific examples of what is going to be on the test. Go to recitation! He offered Sapling EC. He always replied to my emails as well. TY
Coote is a great guy and a great teacher.
Professor Coote explains all his material very clearly, making the exams very doable. As long as you pay attention to his lectures and study the lecture notes, you will not have a problem. I highly recommend taking his class!!!
One of the best teachers at SVSU. He does a fantastic job of translating what he knows into something you can understand. He is an all around solid teacher.
I had Coote for fall semester after corona. He explains the lectures pretty well, but does not care for answering questions nor anyone watching online. He usually completely ignores anyone who is watching online, which he could improve. Tests are pretty easy if you study and are once a week.
He is a good guy and prof!
I was not looking forward to taking Chemistry, but I can easily say that having Professor Coote made the course so much easier. He goes through the lectures & notes at a rather fast pace, so it's important to attend class. Extra credit is opened at the start of the school year, & isn't due till the end of the semester. Great teacher, & great guy!!
Actually teaches the material unlike most professors. Best prof you can take for chem and doesn't test or quiz on anything unexpected
There are quizzes every week and no other homework due. He gives a .pdf of the textbook so you don't have to pay. There are homework options, guided videos, and recitations where you can get help. There are guided notes during lectures so if you write down the examples he does you know how to do things and what to study for the quiz. DEF RECOMMEND!
Coote is an amazing CHEM111 professor, even if you know nothing about chemistry coming into his class, you will learn a lot by the end of the semester. He has weekly quizzes online but he always double checks them and sometimes gives partial credit. Textbook is not needed!
The best chem prof at SVSU
Overall he's a good professor. You take a quiz every week that's 5-6 questions and only open for 20min so that was the most stressful thing for me. Otherwise, it's not too bad. He goes slow on material because he understands most people aren't chem majors. Very chill guy and I'm glad I had him for this class.
Prof. Coote does a great job teaching Chemistry. It's a hard class no matter what but he makes it relatable and goes through problems well. I love his use of mnemonics which I used quite often. Helpful, truthful, funny and caring. The HW was optional, use the book!!! Do the problems, it will make such a huge difference in your understanding.
Dr Coote is the best Chemistry professor at SVSU hands down. He makes a-point to make sure his students understand the material before moving onto the next chapter. He answers emails fairly quickly and his door is always open for questions. I would highly recommend taking Coote especially if you struggle with Chemistry, he truly makes a difference.
Dr. Coote explained everything in a way that made it easy for anyone to understand. He went through everything slowly, and provides a coursepack so you just have to fill in the blanks. Very easy class and I definitely recommend taking Chem with him!
Dr. Coote is extremely sweet, and always willing to help his students. He provided us with a PDF version of the text so we wouldn't have to purchase it.
Great professor. Do not buy book
Loved this man. The perfect teacher for a chem 111 class
Dr. Coote was one of my favorite professors at SVSU. He is a great lecturer, and makes difficult concepts easier to understand. He cares a lot about the success of his students. If help is needed, he is more than willing to give additional guidance.
Dr. Coote is amazing at taking the hard concepts and making them relatable to the real world. Does an amazing job of explaining things and would 100% take him again if I could. He does a very good job at answering questions and is very understanding that students have a life outside of class. All HW is E.C. Four exams and weekly quizzes. Recommend
Professor Coote gives 10 quizzes and 5 tests and drops the lowest score for both. He also gives 1 homework assignment for each chapter and they are extra credit. I went to all the recitation periods after class and he would go over problems on the homework and go over the quizzes. I recommend going to the recitation period it really helps.
NO QUESTIONS ASKED, TAKE HIM! Hands down one of the best profs I've ever had, genuinely cares about student success, 4 exams + 10 quizzes, drops lowest exam + quiz, provides formulas on exams + quizzes, homework is optional and extra credit, is always willing to help, I struggled so much in chem but still passed with a B-. Such a great class! : )
I cannot explain how amazing of a professor Coote is. I struggled so much in chem, failed it in high school and ended with a B in his class. He cares so much about his students and teaches extremely well.
Great teacher! I was recommended him. I would take him over any other professor. So much extra credit. I ended the class with 100%. There is a quiz a week but they are pretty easy. Total of 4 exams. He doesn't put hard stuff on the exams. He lets you drop your lowest quiz and exam. The final is so easy. You get extra credit for doing homework.
Dr. Coote is incredible. I struggled so horribly at the beginning of the semester but with his help the content seemed to come to me much easier. He is the most caring professor I will ever have. He truly wants you to succeed and will do anything in his power to make that happen! Provides a free pdf of the text book. Answers emails quickly. 10/10!
The course is mostly graded on exams, however Coote offered extra credit for all the homework and dropped the lowest exam grade. He kept his lectures entertaining and did guided notes to make them easier to focus.
Coote is an awesome professor. A 12 year old would get an A in the class. He seems scary at first, but I promise you, he is a Chem nerd lol. He is super caring and he truly wants everyone to pass. No one can fail. You wont regret taking him at all. I always went to the recitation (it was optional) and did the days hw with him right next to me.
Very kind professor. Explained everything extremely well and wants his students to succeed. If you have any difficulty in chemistry he's the professor you should take because he can and will actually help you.
I would recommend professor Coote to everyone. He made Chem easy, lectures were entertaining, & he really strives to make sure his students pass.
This is a great class for the gen ed requirements. There are multiple extra credit opportunities and that is what gave me a huge safety net for the exams. You get to drop one too so that is very nice. Professor Coote also explains the topics very clearly during lecture and the recitation is very helpful so there isn't an excuse to do poorly.
Pretty decent lecturer. Gives good real world examples and metaphors to help understand class materials. Also includes formulas on exams.
Many of the Chemistry faculty model their teaching style off of Dr. Coote's methods, so it is best to go straight from the source. His explanations of chemistry processes use examples modeled from his family. It makes the class so memorable! After each test, he hand grades all 100 tests which takes hours of his time. He is SVSU's finest. Take him!
I would recommend Dr. Coote to anyone who needs to take Chemistry. He made everything super easy and was always available to help. There were 4 tests and quizzes every week. The homework was extra credit and he provided an online textbook.
If you take Coote, GO TO THE RECITATIONS!!! I swear to you, I started going to these and went from a 68% to a 91% by the end of the semester. He will literally explain everything and prepare you so well for the exam, DO IT
Made chemistry easy for the first time.
By far one of the best professors in the chemistry department. Gives a coursepack that is easy to follow along with in lecture and lectures are entertaining. Homework is extra credit. Had 4 lecture exams & a cumulative final when I took this class and lowest exam grade was dropped. Offers recitation to help you understand content & ask questions.
Makes chemistry easy to understand. Provides a coursepack and uses it to thoroughly explain material during lecture. I would definitely recommend going to the recitation! He goes through homework problems and answers lecture and lab questions. Homework is extra credit. 4 lecture exams for the class and quiz once a week. Would 100% recommend!
Michael was amazing; definitely choose him if you have chem as a prereq he is the best out of all the chemistry professors on SVSU. Tests are the majority of the grade so take them seriously and take the study guide seriously and you will be set.
I highly recommend Coote for CHEM111. He stated at the beginning of class that he doesn't assume that we already have learned concepts, so he goes into detail to make sure everyone understands the concepts. He clearly states that if you are a fast learner and understand chemistry already, you might be bored in his class.
100% TAKE HIM. He is literally amazing and is so caring. He cares if you do and will actively try to help you anyway he can. 4 exams, lowest exam is dropped and all exams are 20 questions and one 5 point extra credit question. Also HW is extra credit and quizzes are weekly. Absolutely love him though and I struggle with chem a lot.
I would absolutely take Dr. Coote again. He teaches his class like you have never seen the material before. He truly wants to see you succeed in his class. His exams are 20 questions 5pts. Apiece. He offers 5 pts. EC for each chapter covered. There are 5pt quizzes almost every Wednesday. I would recommend this class to anyone needing to take chem.
I could not recommend Dr. Coote enough. This was my second time taking chem 111 and he made it easy to understand and provided a course pack with everything we were going to need to know for exams, and homework that is counted for extra credit with additional study guides. He cares about the success of his students and helps in any way he can.
Dr. Coote is the best professor I've ever had. The class is graded on 4 exams with no cumulative final and online canvas quizzes every Wednesday. He is great at giving lectures and doesn't waste your time. He gives out a ton of extra credit too. Lowest exam and quiz is dropped. If you need Chem111, get into Dr. Cootes section!
Best Professor ever! The way he taught was exceptional. Broke everything down and was easy to understand. He made his notes, so don't buy the textbook. He made all the homework optional for extra credit. Along with having extra credit on the test. Drops the lowest test and a weekly quiz.
would suggest. only thing i had a problem with is him trying to use so many outside examples to demonstrate a concept. sometimes it was just too much and made it more confusing. but provides guided notes, exam review sheet, and practice problems for extra credit. one quiz and exam dropped which is nice
Coote was a great professor, if you have to take a chem course take him. The classes are mostly lecture-based, they are well thought out and relate to the exams. If you attend class and pay attention I guarantee you will pass. There is also a recitation for students who are struggling or just want to go over the info again.
Lectures could be boring if your not into chem but Coote wants you to do well in his class and makes himself avalable to get help. The homework is extra credit and if you do it you will get above 100% in the class. I finished with 103 and I am not good at chem. Take Coote if you need to take chem 111.
Micheal Coote teaches chemistry in a way where it feels relevant to real life. I never finished chemistry in highschool due to covid, so I went in to class feeling like I'd be running behind. The guided notes are extremely helpful, especially when it comes to studying for exams. He's very understandinh and wants you to succeed. Highly recommend!!
Coote was an amazing teacher and I could not recommend him enough! He never expected you to know the information from previous years of learning, and he taught the information in a way that was easy to understand. He gives out a course packet that you fill out together in class throughout the semester.
Coote was a very good professor to have as a freshman. On the first day of class, he assured us all that he understood we were not all chemistry majors and that we were mostly all here as a gen ed course. He made sure that we knew what we needed to study for exams, and he also age us extra credit opportunities.
Dr. Coote is amazing and I am so glad to have taken him not only for 111 but 112. This course is challenging but he makes it understandable. 1 exam dropped, no final, all homework is extra credit. Extremely willing to help you understand the material in recitation/office hours, there's a reason everyone signs up for his courses first. Very nice guy
Take it. So easy, so boring. 4 exams and 10 quizzes that are fair. The lowest of each is dropped. Offers extra credit homework for 40 points total. Interesting when he tells stories from his life/career as examples. You will zone out, don't because lectures are everything. Gives plenty of resources to make the class as easy as possible. Free book.
Coote's class was basically the same as his 111 class if you had him for that, just different material and a smaller class size. He is amazing and is super helpful if you are lost in class, and he doesn't make you feel stupid if you don't know something. I highly recommend him if you can take him, and he drops your lowest exam and quiz score.
Coote is a great professor. He makes lectures relatable and somewhat interesting. He uses guided notes so everyone is on the same page and offers extra credit after every chapter and on tests. He also has weekly homework thats easy points. He also gives you formulas on exams. If you just pay attention in class and do the work, you will get an A
You will get extra credit for every chapter for doing the homework, and he even gives you the answers. There is extra credit on every exam, and the lowest exam is dropped. You will do very well in the class even if you aren't a good test taker. He is very understanding that not everyone likes chemistry, but he will make it easy to pass.
Coote is an exceptional professor who makes chemistry accessible. He provides helpful study materials like course packs and extra credit. Coupled with resources like unstuck ai, his class is a recipe for success.
Best professor ever! Super kind/gracious. Goes slowly since not everyone is good with chemistry. Homework is extra credit and has course pack for extra helps. Guided notes. Study well for exams and you'll be great. Always willing to explain something more in depth if you need it. Great lab professor also. I'd take him again 1,000%!
Dr. Coote is an astounding professor and a kind man who wants the best for his students. He gives out optional "homework" for extra credit, and it brought my grade up by over 10%. His exams are very easy. This class has a recitation; although it's optional, I would highly recommend going if something is confusing!
He was a very laid back professor with very enjoyable lectures! He explained everything in great detail and was very thorough. Overall a very enjoyable class!
Professor Coote is a great professor who takes lectures at a pace accessible for all learners. He provides an outline for notes and study guides that are incredibly helpful in studying for exams. His exams are reasonable in my opinion. Do the homework, go to lecture (he explains the topic well) and you will do very well in this class.
Coote is so caring and kind! The lectures can feel very boring and long, but he gives you guided notes to follow along with. There will be a quiz every week but your lowest one will be dropped. There will be chapter homework's that are optional for EXTRA CREDIT, I recommend doing them. There are 4 exams and NO final, your lowest one will be dropped
Coote is the BEST professor. Very understanding & he teaches as if you don't know a thing. Very nice, lectures are guided notes, stories, & examples.Very funny guy. SO much extra credit, ended with over 100. Exams are very similar to study guides. I have nothing bad to say about him. I also took the lab with him and he was great for that too.
The class is entirely exam based, nothing else goes in the grade book. You take 4 difficult lecture exams and your lowest score gets dropped. The final is the ACS, which he throws in as extra credit. I found this class difficult only because I am not a great exam taker.
