He "readjusts" the syllabus every day, and forgets deadlines. Very disorganized
can hardly hear him and messes up deadlines and assignments
insulting to students, hypocritical, mean, disorganized, low-talker, messy sylla
Tea-time? he makes no sense...
Does not get the credit he deserves, you get out of his class what you put in.
He is terribly unorganized, rambles, violates own "strict" attendance policy!
worst prof EVER.screwed up the final.speaks low voice.shallow class discussions.
Mumbles constantly, insults students in front of the class, VERY unclear overall
he mumbles and comes late and makes you make up the time he was late
Adjust to voice& go w/changes bec. he's knows stuff& gives interesting assgmnts
I did well, but this man is VERY unclear, the word "obscure" comes to mind.
Disorganized and condescending; but he knows and loves his subject.
He is a very well read prof and he knows what he's tlaking about..definately doe
Nice guy.. he tries! Sometimes gets you lost though. Be aware.
what a teacher, exceptionally intelligent, not a class for mediocrity,
Sometimes hard to follow, but very intelligent, very understanding
very unclear and assigns wrong author with books
Very Unorganized...Missed three classes in a row right before the final. Unclear
irresponsible, disorganized, cold
most boring man alive
Save yourself! Extremely unclear, unfair grader, boring UNCLEAR lectures. I barely learned anything and I went to every class!
Really nice and intelligent guy, but somewhat unclear. Get caffeine before lectures. Willing to help if you go and ask for it.
I can't believe you people! As a former student, I'm appalled at your lack of appreciation for a man who made English literature come alive! And he'd get a big damn chili pepper from me; I thought he was the hottest professor on campus.
don't take. really intelligent, but somewhat arrogant. extremely unclear lectures, but interesting if you can stay awake. pick another professor.
It would really be nice if he could actually teach in class, that way, when it came to the 3 5 page papers he assigned, no one would have to pull the material out of their asses.

i'm sitting here trying to write one of his papers.... i wish he actually taught this stuff so i wouldn't have to pull it out of my ass. other than that, pretty bad class.
unclear lectures, nice man, funny, fair grader, doesn't really teach. bring coffee even if you are not tired. and you are an insomniac. and you're allergic to coffee.
He mumbles and says weird things a lot. I think he's in love with the 600pg book Oil!. He looks disheveled all the time when he comes to class (late) which is amusing.
He is nice and interesting, very fair grader. he doesn't stick to the syllabus, lectures are a bunch of mumbling, incoherent sessions without any direction, and you don't really learn much from going to class.Bud did I mention he is nice & occasionally funny&
Coolest professor I've had at UD- Whoever gives Cotsell a bad rating most likely needs perfect notes and structure in order to learn- if you listen to what he has to say you will not only learn a TON of interesting stuff about the writers he talks about b
Excellent professor...made the subject mater interesting for me. Papers were graded rather leniently. If you need to fulfill your second writing req. take approaches to lit. in the summer...it was a blast!
amazing, i love this man, he is a riot. easy grader, fair, kind, amazing i suggest you take him cuse he rocks and ull learn a lot.
makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. ive been to most classes and honestly have three notes written down. he talks about things that have no relevance to anything in a very annoying accent. two papers are the whole grade in the class and are graded on no basis.
Cotsell is the man!
HORRIBLE TEACHER!!! No understanding to his grading system other then what he thinks of you. forgets to hand out assignments even on the day before they are due for finals. And gives out finals when he said there would not be one. Skrewed me over grade wise. STAY AWAY!!!!!
Awful, ridiculous, waste of time.
Cotsell is a bit disorganized. Definitely not the professor to take if you like structure. He knows a lot about modern literature but doesn't really give enough background for you to understand the context. He grades well and class is interesting. It's annoying that he tracks attendance, though, because you don't really get much out of class.
I had to take his class to fulfill a final requirement, I had no interest in it, but by the end he allowed me to hand in an assignment late that I had completely forgotten about and his class was the only English course I ever got an 'A' in during my entire four years at the University. Sometimes boring, but I learned stuff I'll never forget.
biggest **** i've ever met. Gives you a chance to rewrite but doesn't tell you what you need to fix. Going to office hours doesn't help, he uses your time for a therapy session. The man gives grades that make no sense, and takes attendance. Biggest waste of time ever, don't take this class with him!!!!!!
Oh, come on, folks. Cotsell is an extremely witty (if clumsy) guy. He does the tangent thing, sure, but you'll learn a lot. Just don't plan for every moment to be structured. Flow with him, learn to follow his thought, and you'll be good to go. have fun with it.
please!U think he tallys up everyone's absences? He doesn't remember the sign in sheet half the time..and when he does,I guarantee he tosses it. Besides,I missed like, 100 classes, took down two notes all semester, and pulled off an A with my B.S. "philosophical" off the deep-end essays.Just act really deep and you're set. DEF worth the "experience"

Once you get the hang of his teaching style, you can really start to benefit from his lectures. Is one of the nicest professors I've met at UD, plus is a great listener. All his life experience, wide knowledge of literature, and intelligence are also bonuses.
Has that sort of british accent where his lips don't appear to move when he speaks, which I found oddly interesting to watch by itself. Material interesting enough, and he enthusiastic for the topic. Referenced concepts/genres in drama that I wasn't really familiar with, without explaining well. Overall good experience here.
not a hard teacher but very well smart. very easy going and allows students to hand in latework with no or little penalty. Overall you should take him because it is not a demanding class and with little effort you can get a B.
Old student writing. He grades by number so no favoritism. Knows his Shakespeare, Dickens and more than he lets on. Listen and learn from his academic background and life experience. He will listen to you too.
Love him! is very knowledgable and smart. I took two of his classes and would have taken more if possible. He's so easy going and genuinely interested in students' comments and papers. His teaching style is a rambling lecture that always comes out to make total sense by the end of the hour.
Wow. This is the hardest evaluation I've ever done, because I didn't hear a word the man said all semester! Very softspoken, sort of intriguing. 2 papers and maybe 2 other assignments over 5wk course, doubt anybody in the class got less than a B.
Once you get used to him, he's really cool... hard to understand at first, and he rambles a lot. But, he's an easy grader and really funny at times.
Not a fan. The readings were pointless. The lectures were enough to make you wish you never even woke up that morning. And of course, we can't forget the paper assignments that were given out three or four days before they were due. Easy A if you can handle the abstract theory and lack of organization ... but not a professor I would take twice.
He is one of the nicest professors on campus. Take as many of his classes as you can, you cannot get less than an A. He may get a little side tracked in his lectures because he loves to talk...but he is very interesting to listen to, funny at times too, he cracks himself up, all you can do is laugh with him!
He is an excellent professor, very knowledgeable about his subject matter. He has a tendency to ramble a bit and his tone will put you to sleep sometimes. However, not a difficult class if you do the readings.
Cotsell babbles unceasingly about things unrelated to the text, and sometimes he even forgets what text you're supposed to be covering that day. He forgets about assignments, including when papers are due, and often forgets to come to class. To sum him up in a word--forgetful. No doubt he is very intelligent, but don't expect to learn from him.

I learned nothing in this class. It is definitely an easy 3 credits, but he is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He never explained anything, never gave us feedback on our papers... and probably one of the most unorganized men I have ever met. You will not enjoy the class, but if you need an easy group A I guess this is one of them.
Don't take his class! He's impossible to understand and babbles on. Only three papers 4-5 pages but class is hard to sit through. He has a weird grading system and seems like he writes any grade he wants on the paper. However there is a re-write policy
One of my absolute favorite professors! Loves to go off on a tangent, but always humourous and always asks how your doing.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!! It is the most boring thing you will ever go through in your life! He goes on and on about nothing.
Although he is an extremely sweet professor, the class is terrible. It is extremely boring and the literature chosen for the course are not important contributions to the literary experience. The entire course is the professor rambling about the stage set-up and random history instead of focusing on the plays. Don't take this class!
Cotsell taught me many years ago in Europe. Easily the best classes and course I ever took. Mind you, about 60 started the course, and by the end of the first week, it was down to 13 ... many students, preferring a spoon-fed approach, found him extremely hard going; but the class was more fun without them.
Cotsell is just a really great professor. Very passionate and informal, which throws a lot of people off. Very easy to talk to outside of the classroom and creates a very democratic atmosphere inside of it. Don't expect to be spoon fed the material, though.
Don't even bother.
Before taking this course, I was set on being an English Lit major. Cotsell has completely ruined that. He refuses to accept any interpretations of the readings that are different from his own, yet he urges students to "think outside the box". He humiliated me when I made a comment on Whitman during a class discussion, & said I was horribly wrong w
He's a nice guy and he means well, but he mumbles a lot and there's very little activity in class other than straight lecture. It's hard to fail his class because he wants you to succeed, but it's doubtful that he'll become your favorite professor. Don't buy the textbook; everything you could need for the class can be found easily online.
Cotsell's not bad. He does mumble so try to sit close to him to hear. Don't pay attention to what he writes on the board bc it doesn't make sense, but I found him to be an easy grader and thought many of the class discussions were fairly engaging. I also liked the books we read. I learned a lot.many short essays, some dumb in class work and a final
The professor is older (between his 50s and 60s), so he may sound a little dull, but he enjoys the readings. The class is simple: attend, read the material, and then take 3 take home tests; which are 4-6 pgs on the material you have read for class. Then, you have a final at the end, which is an in class essay response to some questions. Not too bad
Cotsell gets WAY too bad a rap on sites like these. He is older and can be dull and quiet, but he's incredibly kind and interested in his students. You'll learn the most from him if you talk to him outside class. He's also funny and has a great attitude. Always smiling. Knows SO MUCH about drama, so don't discount his experience.
Cotsell is kind of unintelligible. I took the class over winter, so it was fast paced and discussion based. We focused a lot of sexual poetry, and it was a little weird. It's not hard to get a good grade, though, as long as you show up and do the assignments.
Cotsell is a very nice professor, and he really enjoys what he teaches. The lectures are long and a little boring, but the class was pretty easy overall. He has a great sense of humor and often cracks himself up, which makes everyone else laugh with him. The book choices were rather dull but overall not too bad. Definitely go to class though.
Each class was basically a discussion of the play you read the night before. He asks for our opinions and interpretations but it became quite bit confusing since everyone had different ones. Other than that, the course was pretty easygoing, you attend two plays, and just be prepared to write a lot.
This professor doesn't do any teaching. He leads discussion but besides that students do much of the discussing. If you like a class where you are going to be doing a lot of talking than this is the professor to take. He is big on calling people randomly so come prepared to each class!
This class is just like joining a book club without getting grades. The class is boring, but he does have fun teaching the class. The reading is very dull, and the grading system is a bit confusing. You don't really have to try on his papers but some comments he leaves are a bit outlandish and irrational.
This is definitely not an easy breadth requirement. The class is extremely boring & the professor sits at his desk and talks for the entire period. He is extremely monotonous and you can barely ever hear him. His grading system doesn't make any sense & if your opinions are different from his in your papers, you will get points off.
Cotsell is a nice guy, but his class is less than engaging and he is way too quiet to hold anyone's attention. He doesn't teach and just lets the class discuss the readings for the whole period; which for my class was less than 10 people (out of 35). By far the least interesting/most confusing class I've taken as an English major. AVOID COTSELL.
I'm surprised his rating's so low. I really enjoyed world lit. It was very interesting and he chooses great modern books and films. The class is literally just people saying what they thought about what they read/watched. You have 3 papers. That's it. He's a nice guy and I definitely recommend this class.
Great teacher, speaks very softly so try to snag a seat up front. Not a hard grader. If you read the book and could argue your point he'll love you.
theres 3 papers and a final exam. Sounds easy right? Wrong. If your paper doesn't follow along with his opinions you get a lot of points off. So basically your opinion doesn't matter when it comes to papers, unless you don't mind getting a bad grade. Most frustrating class ever.
took this class over summer. it really is like a book club. there are 3 papers, a final, and everything else is just talking. he can be hard to understand sometimes but students do most of the discussion. easy A. dont need to do the readings, but it helps bc he randomly calls on people to talk
I actually really enjoyed this class and I think American Literature is absolutely boring. He makes boring authors a lot more interesting. If you actually involve yourself in the discussion (which you should anyway for participation points) the class will go by a lot more quickly. His papers are easy if you pay attention and take notes in class.
Professor Cotsell is an amazing instructor. He offers clear assignments, wonderful critiques, and is always helping us deconstruct and expand class discussions. I'd take a hundred classes from him if I could. If you're not into discussing plays and great literature, then this is not for you.
He talks really quiet, and you will miss 80% of what he says unless you sit in total silence directly in front of him. He is a great professor, though. I really hate most English class, especially the part where you have to read and the part where you have to write, but I actually looked forward to this class, even participating in discussions.
Took Experience of Lit for non-majors over the summer. Assigned reading every night and class discussions. Not hard. Grade based on class participation and 4 essays, each about 1,000 words. He likes it when they are interesting & show a lot of thought. I missed over 6 classes due to illness and he was understanding and willing to work with me.
I'm highly surprised his rating is so low. At least in ENGL204 he is a pretty average professor. He's a very kind and funny man. The guy is old so he speaks softly but never wastes anybodies time. You'll do three pretty easy essays and a very easy final. I would recommend taking this class, at least for English majors. Great professor overall.
He is very smart and passionate about what he is teaching. He only requires three papers and a final. I hope to take his classes again.
This professor can not speak loud enough for the students in the first row to clearly understand. Nor does he have any grading scale for his papers. He doesn't respond to emails or keep his word about changing your grade when he has made mistakes. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Cotsell is a great guy and a super cool professor. It took me a while to get use to his quiet demeanor and dry humor but once you get to know him he's an awesome teacher. His classes are mostly all discussion based and runs pretty much like a book club. Read the books, share your opinion in class, write the few essays, and its an easy A.
He's impossible to hear if you're sitting beyond the second or third row, but he grades really easily. And he never seems to care if anyone has actually done the reading--he'll get kids to read out the material loud during class, and then ask for opinions. On to top of that, he's a nice guy. Love him. Take him for 204.
Cotsell is an extremely nice and caring man. The accent makes class entertaining. Literally all you do is have class discussions about the readings, and write 3 papers. Easy second writing requirement. He likes when people participate, but some kids never do. I guess that is up to how much you care. Easy grader and lets you rewrite bad papers.
Professor Cotsell is really nice and knows the material well. Class can be pretty dry, and attendance doesn't really amount to much. He's a reasonable and easy grader, just three or four short papers throughout the semester comprise your grade. Honestly I got an A and was never in class. Really nice guy, would recommend.
Professor Cotsell really doesn't care if you do the reading before class or not. As long as you know a gist of what's going on and you participate sometimes, you'll be fine. He doesn't take attendance but will fail you in participation if you never show up. 3 easy papers and a final. He speaks really softly so just sit in the front. Stress free!
Super sweet man. Really cares about his students. He chooses great texts to read. Participation definitely helps him remember who you are when grading your essay! ENGL204 was an extremely chill class - I truly enjoyed reading & discussing the literature. Very easy & fair grader. Not a difficult class - just enjoyable. Would recommend!!
I've had him for two classes and each was the same. Doesn't take attendance or teach anything at all, and there's honestly no reason to go. As long as you read the stories on your own time and do the assignments you'll be fine.
Sweet old guy, more like a book club than anything else. Only takes attendance every once in awhile so you can skip if you need to. If you're a good writer and don't mind discussion this class will be a breeze for you
Only graded the class based on three papers and a final and whether or not you show up, but didn't take attendance for half the semester. Nice guy, but if you're not sitting directly in front of him you can't hear him. Not the worst prof to take, but certainly not the greatest.
Professor Cotsell is very sweet and cares about his students. However he whispers in class which makes him hard to hear unless you sit in the first few rows. Also you need to participate or else he will just call on you. There are 2 papers and a final and a participation grade. He takes attendance randomly.
Dr. Cotsell has easily become my favorite professor. He has the best sense of humor and I really enjoy how laid back his lectures are. The class is based on 2 essays and a take home exam, and as long as you show up and participate as best as you can, you will be more than fine. He's also extremely helpful during office hours!
Amazing professor! He does talk quietly but just sit near the front and you'll be fine. He's actually very interesting if you make the effort to participate and do the readings. I highly recommend going to office hours because he's really easy to talk to outside of class. Cotsell is the man!
Love him! So cute and a very caring professor.
Knows a lot about the class material and is really helpful. Sit in the front and you will hear him fine. Easy A and great professor.
So the class is only 2 papers, both of which you can revise for an A. The other grade is a final exam which is online, at home 3 question close reading that you can use your notes to take. You do not need to buy the textbooks because all the readings are on google. Just go to class, a volunteer to read every once and a while. He is a sweet man.
