He was a first year teacher when I took the class and it showed. The tests were very hard but the curve helped. He graded group projects by having 2 people out of the group do the presentation on their own. He expects a lot out of the students.
He expects a lot from students, but I got a lot out of this class. He focuses on entrepreneurial marketing, real-world situations, and Wall Street Journal cases. He was approachable, but the tests were hard. I liked that I did an actual marketing plan for a real business owner (unlike other classes, where you do work that affects no one.)
high energy teacher that challenges students; two major projects with real business owners; i made some nice contacts from these assignments; tests are from the book; he focuses on examples you can't get in the book, but from work experience (and I have none); he assigned Wall Street Journal articles, which helped me understand business better
Project includes consulting w/ a business and making marketing recommendations. Be sure to form a good team. His grading was fair. This is my first consulting project, so it was hard. Wall Street Journal quizzes are easy if you read, hard if you don't. Midterm 1 was hard, but #2 was way easier. He gives a study guide for final.
Horrible prof..so many projects, quizzes, article reviews, headaches, stress, tension..he thinks he's teaching an MBA class and forgets that this is just an introductory course. He is Dr. EVil from Austin Powers..his fav character and he's truly that. Never want to see his face again in life!!!!! I passed this class but he still sucks.
Not as hard as some say. 2 projects (make sure you get decent group members), 2 midterms (multiple choice), few quizzes, some take home assignments (easy, based off the wallstreet journal). Don't need the textbook, just go to class everyday and pay attention. You will need the Wallstreet Journal subscription from the professor which is $22.

Enthusiastic; Flexible; Treats students as adults; changed course midstream (for students benefit): used easier midterms, dropped WSJ quiz, added WSJ article questions, added video/YouTube requirement; Always available by phone when we needed help with projects; Projects are real-world; Allows you to give feedback on your team members. Curve helps.
I'm a night student. He made me look forward to coming to class with entertaining lectures. He gets input from students; not a traditional "he lectures, you shut up and listen" class. Great for students looking to start a biz. Challenges you; got my "50K chunks" of knowledge; Loved the video project; i suck at midterms, but they're only 20%.
He is a nice guy....but he requires way too much from his students. We had two huge presentations, 2 midterms (20%) and random wallstreet journal quizzes (you have to pay for the wsj)..3 books, and we only used one of them. It was an okay class, kinda boring....i think i got a B. Overall, I enjoyed the class.
Prof. Cruz is a cool guy and very helpful. You have 2 group projects which is very important so make sure you have some good and reliable group members. 2 mid terms and a final all multiple choice. this class isnt a cake walk but it is very interesting and he teaches well. You wont fall asleep. He grades on a curve which is good. Take him!!!
Winter session: Class is different by because we did a project for a real business. He was very fair (one midterm was compromised, so he listened to our concerns and resolved the issue). Let us interview all potential team members with his "speed dating" technique. He gave us two full class periods to work on the project. Good recommendation.
Very nice and helpful. His exams are hard, and timed, but he does curve the grade if it helps the class. There is also a group project where you create a plan for a business. You don't need to do the reading, just study the terms and ideas he gives you in the study guides.
Don't blindly listen to other students. You need to read AND study to do well on midterms. No cakewalk, but he curves the exams. First test: Median=70; Standard Deviation: 12; Top Score=94. Pretty standard. Gives 3 midterms + 1 final so that you don't get too harmed if you blow 1 test. Online practice test + study guide + 1 notecard helps.
Great teacher. Very hulpful. Full of enthusiasm and you dont get bored or lost during lectures. Powerpoints are taken out of book. So go over powerpoints to review for tests. You will do well.
He's a very helpful teacher, and he uses real life examples to motivate the class into learning. Just remember to not memorize definitions for the exam... it is mostly about the concept.
This teacher is funny. He expects papers to be perfect and docks off a lot of points for very few grammatical errors. He basically grades hard period. Exams aren't easy either. Different workload based on the size of his classes. Unorganized projects = small classes. So I would suggest you take one of his larger sections.
lectures from power points, fairly easy to follow. However, the midterms are not a easy cake. if you do the projects make sure you ASK and question EVERYTHING he requires, vague on projects, and check your emails he gives extra credit but you must keep up with the email, you are also required to buy a wall st. =useless &collected dust on porch
Grade was based on tests only. Tests have up to 100 questions. Sometimes he tries to trick you on the exam by using words that are not covered in the book or in class which is retarded. So even if you know the material, you have to guess whether the word he uses matches the one that you learn in the book. WSJ =useless.
Great prof, exmas are not easy, but he curves. 2 projects+presentations. He likes to teach, very motivated. Learned a Lot!
YOU NEED TO HAVE A GOOD GROUP, OR WRITING THE BUSINESS PLAN WILL BE TOUGH. EASY EXAMS. FUNNY LECTURES. EASY TO CONTACT VIA PHONE AND TEXT MESSAGING.
Very enjoyable & lively class. He keeps you awake, makes the material interesting, and gives great examples. Very easy to follow lecture in the book & highlight. Take the online practice tests from the book, they help for midterms. There are 2 group projects that can be difficult with a bad group. He curves the tests, overall a decent class.
he is inconsistent with his words sometimes. He will tell you to subscribe the Wallstreet Journals newspaper for the class, but he only have time to cover it the first few weeks. After that, newspapers will be thrown all over your drive way every day. I wonder how much comission he got for those newspaper sales!!!
I enjoyed the projects. Gave me hands-on experience. Never created a YouTube video before, but now I know how. I liked the Google AdWords pay per click project. I met with Cruz to help me with projects, and he's nice and taught me some PowerPoint and Excel tricks. Very helpful and patient. He treats us like future managers and his customers.
Study for exams. Final is comprehensive and consists of all 3 midterms. 2 projects. You dont need Wallstreet for this class. Hands on projects are pretty fun BUT form a good team!!!! Nice guy, likes inpur from "customers" (students). If all agree on a project due date change, he will honor the change. Happy Studying.
This prof definitely makes class worth coming to....he's hilarious and has a great attitude. Keeps you awake and interested. Makes you subscribe to the WSJ and you use it maybe 3 times. Its a waste of money. His exams are hard,he's inconsistent and gives no worthy extra credit. 3 midterms, and final.
Prof. Cruz is one of the best marketing professors at SJSU. His class is very hands on, which gives you real world experience. The class is 50% projects and 50% midterms. I definitely recommend everyone to take this professor.
Cruz is an interesting professor and made the class interesting and fun to attend. Cracks jokes that are hilarious too, or maybe its just me. Just study your notes and you will do well on the exams; he curves, which helps too and tells you what to study before the test!
My class was based on 4 exams. Very much curved. Went to a few marketing association meetings and made a 5 minutes video and got an A-. I did bad on the exams, but extra credit really helped. I went to every class, but I think if you skip all the lectures and just come for exams and discussions on WSJ articles, you'll do fine.
He's funny for the first week or so, then his jokes get really lame, and dirty. He speeds by a lot of information in one sitting and expects you to know as much as reading word for word in the textbook for the exams. Exams were multiple choice and some were difficult. Dont pay for WSJ, and dont go to class until review day.
I loved this class. I really learned a lot and Professor Cruz is a very easy going professor. There is a lot of work, however, you'll find that you want to do it.
Prof. Cruz goes at a very fast paced level. 2 exams, one is individual which is very detailed questions were very hard. 2nd exam was with a group but it was extremely time consuming. You have projects in class which take major time to do, I felt I was putting in work for two classes. He does curve his tests and gives ex. credit.I learned a lot.
Makes himself available to students. I appreciated that and it helped me out. Group projects are also a good idea but there's always going to be mishaps and roadblocks. The final exam was pretty difficult to complete in the time assigned. This was one of the few classes where I'm going to retain a lot of different aspects of the subject.
Professor Cruz, is one of the best professors in SJSU. I'm glad i took him for Bus189. Tests were hard, but he curves at the end. Group project was hands on learning and related to the real world; personally, i learned alot from the group project, as well as from class. I will highly recommend this professor especially if you are graduating.
Too much work for a Marketing Elective. Unless you want to spend your career managing web marketing initiatives. DONT TAKE! Very unorganized. Not clear with expectations. And final exam was ridiculously hard. Dept. chair is aware of situation.
Professor Cruz is awesome, and anyone who states that he is unclear obviously doesn't attend class. His interactive teaching methodologies helped me to actually understand marketing concepts as opposed to merely memorizing marketing definitions. This professor is highly recommended!
We went from having to use a powerpoint for the final to getting the font on our names correct to looking up information in the book and in some pdf we never read, then getting it formatted to answer about 50+ questions and an extra 10 in MC form, worst test ever. On the bright side the teacher was receptive to change.
had him for marketing, excellent teacher - you will learn! challenging tests, just do the work, ask questions when things arent clear and dont worry about the rest, you'll do just fine!
I had him a semester ago and loved him! Very nice and funny. Made class interesting and fun. As long as you show up and do your work you will pass the class. Take his class if you can!
he doesn't teach you everything he tests. Ridiculous teacher... I had nothing against marketing, but now I'll hate it for the rest of my life.
Mr. Cruz is a 100% committed to his class. He makes learning interesting and fun. He makes you laugh. He gives 3 exams which he curves,a class project which is a simulation and participations sheets every class. There is an extra credit option that could raise your grade. He is helpful. I will definitely recommend him.
Professor Cruz offers real world, hands on experience into a subject that is necessary to finding a career in the Silicon Valley. He uses real projects, not ancient books and extreme testing practices, and offers a relevant example into web marketing. I really enjoyed this class and would recommend it to anyone.
The greensheet is your best friend in this class. Be sure to keep up with assignments and you and readings and you'll be alright. This is probably the best section for 189 you can take! Cruz also offers extra credit for being in business clubs like SAM and the MA.
I am an accounting major that took hard accounting classes. However this was my hardest class! Tests are unreasonably hard. There are like 50m/c questions each of which has a paragraph you have to read and then choose the correct answer. Avoid Him! Also collects participation points at random class meetings so u have to go everytime :(
He is by far the WORST teacher I have had at SJSU. I would never recommend him to even my worst enemy. I along with my classmates learned ALL of the material on our own. He missed several classes, and was late to more then I can count. I feel I should get a refund from SJSU for the money wasted taking this class with Cruz. His test were ridiculous!
Just finished a summer internship I got because of the skills learned in this class. Cruz is really good about helping teams understand how to do web marketing. If you want skills youll actually use in the real world, take this class. Not a waste of time, unlike other classes. Find a good team to work with, or your screwed. He curves tests.
Professor Cruz is great! I took his intro to business and well as and independent studies class with him and learned so much. His class lectures are always fun and his style of teaching keeps you awake and listening. Although it may seem like his tests would be a breeze because of teaching style, do not let that fool you. He takes test very serious
His class was okay. Lecture was kinda boring since he reading them off from his powerpoint and go through them really quick. Doesn't have powerpoint posted for you to print out. Project wasn't too bad, just find a good team. Downside bout his class is his exam. Some reason he make the midterm and final extremely hard because there so much questions
this teacher is hard to understand and is unorganized. he is not helpful at all an makes his tests very tricky. I would not suggest taking this teacher. He is way too hard for no reason.
This class had so much potential. The projects take a lot of work which really helps you learn skills. But Cruz gives you little guidance and no assistance. Sure he mentions wat he wants but there is no checking up on your HUGE projects... you just present them and then he grades you. Did I mention his avg midterm grade was less than 30% this fall!
Where to start. The man is so unorganized. He has a syllabus he doesn't keep track of but if you don't you're damned. Tests have nothing to do with what he teaches. Just memorize three books and a bunch of website how tos...ha! Super hard class. SJSU found someone who owns a computer and called him a Prof.. Skills are good, bcuz you teach yourself.
this professor are extremly hard and useless. do not take him. he is devil. not good at all. he doesn't curve and mean on grading
this professor is not good at all. I attend all the section of the class. and I was getting pretty good grades he doesn't curve at all I am not deserve to get B+ I should get A he doesn't have any skill of teaching, he should get out of this school. I don't recommond him to any one.
Nice guy but not a very good teacher. He can't answer questions about the material he is lecturing about sometimes. Doesn't really know all the material, reads powerpoint. Teaching style does not prepare students for tests.
I don't know why people have such bad ratings for him. Its a tough class and it takes up a lot of time, but it pays off. I learned a lot. Its an upper division elective its go to have to be challenging. PICK YOUR GROUP MEMBERS WISELY!!! grades are heavily base on group work and attendance matter so miss any classes. Good Luck!
Drops lowest midterm score, and two quiz scores. Quiz every week. Read the text and you'll do fine. Funny guy, keeps me awake at 7:30am on a friday.
What a horrible professor! The semester consisted of 2 quizzes a week, 3 midterms, and a final. He also stamps notes for every class session. He mainly taught straight from the book using a powerpoint presentation. Not a approachable person at all!! He came to the final 30 minutes late too and didn't apologize for wasting our time. BE WARNED!
2 quizzes a week, very difficult midterms, group project in which you compete for a grade. All this makes it very hard to get an A in his class. On the other hand he's a really funny and down to earth professor. His class was a lot of work. I learned a lot of mgmt vocabulary, but not much else.
it is very hard class, what I mean he makes it hard. we had quizz every section of class. he is not fair in grading, he even deduct points of the way of your writing.he is very serious, I attend the all section and he end up giving me c-. terrible professor. not recomended at all
Simulation was really good challenging one for everyone. The class is focused in term of quizzes and exams, and he giving us study guides. Class participation was stamped notes, & that was good idea. Time management was great starting and ending, and all the activities we had in between.
this teacher is totally unapproachable. he is totally unorganized and makes his tests pretty hard. he doesnt listen to his students and justifies his reasons to make him right. DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER. He made a lot of people mad in class. This teacher needs to get a new life. he thinks hes funny but hes not.
This class was a lot harder than it had to be. There was a quiz or 2 every week, and there were 4 midterms. A portion of the last 2 midterms and final involved groups, so choose your group wisely! I can't stress that enough. This class was a lot of work, and it's almost impossible to get an A. If you can take someone else, I would suggest doing so.
This is INTRO to marketing, meaning it should NOT be this hard. Be prepared to teach yourself EVERYTHING. TONS of scantons (I went thru like 4 packs). No one had a good grade, but still wouldnt curve. Students were constantly arguing with him and yet he didnt see the problems with the course. He doesnt deserve to be on the payroll.
Unorganized, doesn't know much about what he is teaching, just follows the powerpoints that the publisher provided, quiz & exam came from publisher too. learned nothing from this class. it's no worth taking his class. a waste of time. don't know how SJSU got this kind of instructor. He is unqualified.
This teacher is difficult to talk to and when the whole class disagrees on something, he will make it sound like the STUDENT is always wrong. I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER(if thats what you want to call him). He should just do us all a favor and quit.
Avoid. Makes it extra hard: Pop quizzes about new stuff, much GROUP-QUIZ taking, exams in tiny font, skips exam previews, not enough time, goes to GROUP-ESSAY questions mid-semester, DELIBERATELY CONFUSING exam Q?s, unfulfilled promises, often late, REQUIRES his note format and then collects them BEFORE the 100-question cumulative final.
The class was well worth it! Having never been introduced to web marketing, I thought it would have been moderately useful. It was more useful that you'd think. A course I took later where web marketing was required, our task was to create a marketing campaign for the FBI, given a real budget. What I learned in Cruz's class helped me greatly!
Not an easy class, but I don't mind working for a good grade. It is College after all. Very helpful. I learned a lot. I now have a bunch of stuff I can put on my resume, such as basic HTML knowledge, Web Design, Online Advertising experience, and more. Drops 1 test and curves. Great deal.
Best Teacher I've Had In College! Cruz exemplifies what a REAL teacher should be for their students. DON'T take his classes if you're mediocre, lazy, boring, and looking to skim through life's experiences. HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take any of his courses if you are intelligent, creative, and motivated to succeed. Cruz is personable & a great teacher!
I took this class and I really enjoyed it. The projects in this class were a little bit time consuming, but it was all worth it. I was able to learn a lot about things that will come in handy for me in the future. His class his pretty interesting and likes to engage he students in the class. I would take him again if he taught another course.
He is a great teacher! Study the BOOK and you will do fine on quizzes and tests. Four tests (he drops two scores), and a quiz every week. If he he doesn't follow his schedule, he keeps it updated through yahoo groups. He MAJORLY curved my class, I should have a C but if I get 100% on final, I'll get an A! He's really nice. MUST ATTEND CLASS!
On a personal level, he's a nice guy. As a professor, he's not so great. Cruz will force you to take notes a certain way; NEWSFLASH this isn't high school. Also, at times he can't answer questions brought up by students. His powerpoint and tests are directly from a manufacturer with NO variety.
Spring Semester 2009: Gives out 4 midterms drops 2 of the lowest scores. 10 easy definition questions every week. Group simulation which is time consuming but easy. Final has 2 parts, group and individual. Cruves the midterms(not sure about the final) Very nice teacher and wants to improve in his teaching methods. Got an A would take him again!
Great class to learn the basic of marketing. He's a pretty cool guy and the class can be entertaining from time to time. He drop 2 of the lowest quiz and 2 of the lowest midterm scores, in case you have some "bad days." If you attend class, follow instruction, and study the vocabs from the book this class will be an easy B if not an A. I got an A :)
Easy going and reasonable teacher. Class projects are time consuming but worth it. Good hands on experience. Fair grading. You get useful knowledge about Online Marketing in this course.
I think Professor Cruz is a great professor. He cares about his students and he grades people fairly. His exams are not the easiest but he curves at the end and he drops the lowest the lowest score. Overall I didn't had to work too hard to get a good grade.
This was a 7:30am class for me and Mr. Cruz made me actually want to come. I got a D, C and B on the tests orginally and a C on the project but he offers 10% extra credit and CURVES ALOT which helps. I ended up with an A in the class. If you go to class you'll get a B or higher. Everything that's on the test is covered in his lectures.
Mr Cruz is a very caring and enragatic insturcture. He really loves to teach. He has a great personality and encourage student to learn. Here is what I liked: First, he asks his student questions to stimulate their thinking. Second, he lectures and emphasizes the main points of each chapter. Third, he summarizes the take points of each chapter.
Very nice and helpful teacher. Tests were not easy, but not too bad if you attend class and take notes (and STUDY!). Simulation project was long and time consuming, but was a very useful learning experience. Prof. Cruz will treat you as an adult and expect you to deliver on your assignments and show up to class. Overall, a very useful class.
Overall I enjoyed the class. This is not a class that you can just show up a get an A. Mr.Cruz knows what he is talking about and enjoys teaching. He is on of the 1st teachers that listens to the students feedback and makes changes. At the start of the class he did't curve the test, but after feedback he went back and curved them all. If you buy a
Professor Cruz is extremely helpful and is organized. The simulation work is very educational.
Ridiculous requirements such as forced note taking in his particular way. I received an A so I'm not a disgruntled student, but I thought this class was, at best, at a community college level. He sends out a generic email after the semester begging for positive reviews on here because the school was cutting his classes (Based on his own account).
Uses Cornell note-taking system; Boohoo, some people don't like to take notes. It's no big deal. He gives EASY participation points for notes. Drops lowest test/quiz. Got the email from Cruz requesting feedback. No mention requiring it to be positive. He makes it easy for students to learn/succeed (i.e. projects are NOT do or die). Take him.
He teaches right out of the books, giving meaning to the technical stuff you might read. He is very nice, helpful, and reasonable. The projects are easy, but time consuming. You need to read to understand his lecture, and listen to understand the reading. If you don't want to do marketing on the web professionally, don't take the class.
He is overall a great teacher. He knows his material and is great at explaining things. He is very understanding when it comes to tests and projects. The class will teach you a lot...if you want to actually learn something about marketing...take this guy!
Had him for BUS 181. He's a good lecturer, but he makes you jump through so many hoops, it's ridiculous. Often will assign complicated things via email on Friday, expecting them due the next class time. At first was fun, now just draining. It's one stupid project after another w/miles of instructions to follow to a T!
WARNING!CRUZ is a Horrible Professor. Here's why. He gives you 3 MC midterms with 50 q's each and a 100 question final. There is a quiz almost every class session. He grades difficult. He needs to stick to his office dayjob at the SJ Mercury News. Give another professor the opportunity to teach. Students don't pay tuition to fail their class.
Mr. Cruz has real world experience/connections that you can either take at face value and benefit or blow off. DO NOT pay too much attention to the libelous comments. This is how the work place operates, suck it up and do the work or fail! His projects are demanding and the course is difficult, but the guest speakers are worth it.
This class is demanding but getting an A is absolutely possible. There are extra credit points that you should take advantage of. He drops the lowest exam score. He is very passionate about teaching so he provides a lot of information; although this could be overwhelming. Only take his class if you want to LEARN. The guest speakers are awesome!
I am doing my second major in business management just because of him! Great teacher and very helpful! highly recommended!
He kept us on our toes through out the semester. There were a lot of schedule changes mostly due to the furlough days. He sticks to his rules and regulations for assignments mostly to get you in the habit of knowing this how the business works especially as a business owner. As long as you attend class and show that you are there to learnitsworthit
don't take cruz. he's terrible. don't believe all the good comments because i know he's the one trying to bump up his score. way too much work. he'll ruin your semester. stay out of his class.
Doesn't use blackboard, tons of useless sites you have to go on. Play stupid games which is a complete waste of time, the simulation has nothing to do with this class this is not HR!! It's 200 pt and it's a group project. Makes an easy class more difficult than it should be. He really sucks..BIG TIME!!! Don't take him! He's just all over the place.
I'm surprised of the reviews that others had left. This professor is very modern and tech savy. He tries to get students to use and introduce us to different websites, where the real world would probably use. VERY approachable, and easy with deadlines. If you study and genuinely do the work, you'll do well. Find a good study group, and make friends
If you go to class and listen, you should get at least a passing grade. 3 midterms (drop the lowest 1). 1 final. Exams are multiple choice. 2 group assignments, SO GET A GOOD GROUP, 40% of grade or so. Gives study guides. The questions for the midterms/finals are pulled out from there, so compare answers with others. Can be boring/dull at time.
