very nice guy and very understanding but also unclear about what he expects from his students.
really cool guy. i think it helps that he writes for the get out paper, he knows what's up. answers questions with precision and takes extra care to make sure you get it!! doesnt make you feel silly for not knowing something. i'm looking forward to this cl

Prof Cryer is great. He's hard but fair and he makes a required class pretty fun. He'll take the time to help you understand. He's the mergatroid of freshman comp teachers.
Mike is awesome! He had us write all of our papers on pop culture, and there were no surprises and no quizzes. I think everyone in my class got an A. He also let us leave early all the time.
Really nice guy. But very hard, if u meet with him and take the extra time to go to office hours its an easy A.
Great teacher! You frequently get out of class early and he also cancels class a few times. Not too much reading, not too much writing. Four papers due, and he is really helpful. I would recommend him to those that have had higher english classes back in high school and are not really interested in English. He does not treat you like high schoolers
hes a cool guy more like a friend than a professor his class is very laid back once a week and discussion board there are mainly like 4 projects. simple
Great professor. Mr. Cryer is laid back, but helpful and knowledgeable. You have to learn from the book, but the subject matter lends itself to that style of learning. He was great. Take as many classes as you can from him.
Great teacher and laid back. He schedules meetings, so if you take the time to talk to him, you'll get an A. Got out early most of the time, wants to make sure you understand what's going on.
Definitely one of my favorite teachers and the only class I looked forward to going to. He makes the topics for papers really interesting. I would recommend him to any one.
This was a super easy class. It was the last required english class of our college career for most of us, and he seemed to recognize that by this point we would be burned out on traditional teaching methods. There were a lot of in-class discussions, and we only had to write 3 essays the entire semester! He even showed the occasional video.
Cryer is a cool teacher, he holds conferences and tells you exactly what he's looking for in your paper. Theres no final, and to be honest, he's one of the easier english teachers I've had. Even in highschool. Taking him for 202 as well.
Mr. Cryer is a great teacher! I had a lot of fun in his class!
Dr. Cryer is passionate, helpful and laidback. Highly recommend. No final, has conferences and is generally just great.
Cool guy, interesting topics, and engages students. 4 essays, good topics, and relatively easy. Be sure to follow the exact directions, and he's somewhat hard on grading. Although if you are a good writer, an easy A. If not, you might have to spend some time on them. Hardly used text book, don't buy it. Other than that, I'd recommend him.
When you teach a high school level writing class, most students will like you. I did not learn much, because he doesn't do much in class.
One of the easiest teachers ever! You write 3 essays total, he holds conferences to tell you exactly what he's looking for. The week of conferences you only go to class 10 minutes for the entire week! Easy grader and easy going teacher.
Easy class, just write the papers and show up to class. Cryer will cut you a break if you put a decent amount of effort into his class. He has meetings to go over your paper where he will basically tell you if it's good or bad and what to add or get rid of if your paper needs it.
DO NOT BUY THE BOOK!! He likes to assign readings from it, but you're never graded and can look up the stuff he says. He only makes you write like 3 essays and meets with you to go over them. If you don't do a topic he wants tho he'll say that you don't have a good writing style and need to change it. take the condensed version online.
Cryer is awesome! Shows a lot of movies and just a chill guys, all my classes where like avg 30 min long some got out after 10 min. His grading is super easy and assigns min. hw. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK. he does not use it at all! Defiantly take his class for an easy A
Great English professor, very laid back, which is a stark contrast to most teachers of the same subject. Class is very easy, you write three essays during the semester and that is essentially your entire grade. Easy grader, gives helpful feedback. Class typically gets out 10-30min early. Definitely take Cryer for English 105 if you can.
This guy is awesome. His class isn't hard at all and he lets you choose what you want to write about. He basically walks you through exactly what you need to write in a one on one meeting. He's great
He is a really chill teacher, he isn't a tough grader, and his class is really easy. There are no tests and just 4 essays with only a few discussion boards. I highly recommend this teacher. Save yourself some money and don't buy the book.
Professor Cryer is an alright professor. He is really smart and you can tell by his conversations. He gives hardly any homework besides his 3 major essays. The class itself is really easy and he is layed back but he grades really hard and bias towards his beliefs.
Nice, smart guy. Doesnt always convey information very well. You won't learn much but you can have a good conversation with him if you try. Try to engage him and you will get more out of it.
Super duper laid back professor. You will write three essays - rhetorical, persuasive, and reflective. Essays need to be about 4 pages each. He is smart and funny. He loves it when you participate in the discussion, but he won't hold it against you if you don't. The class sizes are small, so he will notice if you are gone. Take the class, it's easy
He is a very smart guy and likes to learn from the class not just teach - so expect participation. He is big on conspiracy theories but then dwindles away from them as normal 3 major papers. He's an easy grader and checks more for content. DO NOT BUY BOOK. WE DID NOT OPEN IT ONCE. There aren't major quizzes either, just show up to class.
Possibly one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you suck at writing - don't take the class. If you're a slacker but can pop out a high quality piece of writing and come to class, it's really fun.
Professor Cryer is an awesome military-brat conspiracy theorist. I enjoyed his class because I enjoyed the subjects we wrote about. You don't really need to do the readings he assigned as long as 1 person in your group reads. You have to show up to get participation points, but class is not bad. Easy grader. 3 papers all semester.
Cryer is awesome. He conducts his class more like a discussion. There's a lot of reading and you should probably read his assignments but it is soooo worth it. His class was so much fun to go to. He expects good essays which is hard to give him but again so worth it. He often doesn't get jokes so sometimes you'll have to explain things. Kinda weird
Cryer is awesome! At times there were lots of long boring readings, but it isn't often and mostly at the start of the class. 3 papers and he wants them to be 4-5 pgs each usually. Rhetorical, persuasive, and reflective analysis. Provides students lots of freedom to write about what interests them! Definitely best for ENG 105 out of all professors.
Cryer was awesome this year for ENG105. He conducts class very informally and loves to discuss. Assigns a lot of readings that can be hard to understand but always has a discussion on them in class afterwards. Essays are super easy.
Good professor, pretty interesting. Talked a lot about conspiracy at the beginning of the class, and we watched documentaries in class pretty often. He will tell you to get the text book, but you don't need to. Honestly it will be a waste of money; he never referred to it in class. Would recommend him, it's a pretty easy class.
Read the syllabus. He's strict about phones in class and has a limit of how many absences you can have. Papers assigned were interesting and 3-5 pages. He's a pretty easy grader!
Take Cryer if you want a class that is equivalent to a sophomore high school class that he takes too seriously. I have taken AP English classes all through high school and I got a B. He doesn't explain what he wants for his papers and gives no feedback on them. He doesn't update grades so you have no idea what your grade in the class is till after
He does not explain what he wants and is not fast by contacting you back if you have questions. I personally did not like the class, he is not very nice, takes everything too seriously, and is a hard grader. You never ever use the book so don't even buy it, but i would not recommend taking him.
Lectures feel like a waste of time; this class was more of a requirement and I did not benefit from it. He definitely keeps track of attendance so make sure you go to class. Don't bother getting the book because you don't use it. His grading criteria doesn't make sense; hard grader and when you review your grade with him he brushes you off.
I love cryer. I had him for english 105 during spring semester and he was really helpful. Absolutely loved going to his class. He genuinely cares about his students. We still email back and forth today about my future plans. His paper topics are fairly broad and he lets you explore your own areas of interest. Would take again. Loved his lectures
He'll talk a lot about basically conspiracy theories... Put in effort to your idea, and write decently you'll do fine. Really easy B with no effort, more could have been a solid A.
He offers quality feedback on your papers. Only had 3 papers in the class. Very little homework. Make sure you talk to him about your papers they are your whole entire grade.
This class consisted of three main essays completed throughout the semester and then one semester reflection essay as our final. It was a very interesting class because we got to read and write about cool topics like conspiracy theories. You do have to work really hard on the essays because they are your only grades for the class.
V chill professor. Don't skip class, attendance is mandatory and factors into your grade at the end . He says you will do three papers, but in actuality there is a four. Also, save your money and skip the book. He will swear you need it, but he only referred to it once when we were in the persuasive unit (pers. essay styles, easily google-able)
Really nice guy who is passionate about literature!
Funny guy! He has a good sense of humor and the class was really easy.
My boy Michael has got the freshest style I have ever seen in a professor
Professor Cryer was my favorite professor this semester! He is funny and passionate!
Professor Cryer is excellent. He clearly loves to teach and does a great job. The criteria for the essays are clear (however there are only four essays, which compose your nearly your whole grade). Class itself isn't boring thanks to Cryer. Lastly, don't bother to buy the textbook, despite his insistence that you'll need it.
I had professor Cryer years ago and I still remember the first day of class! His lectures are interesting and he cares about what we get out of class. He's funny, smart, and an all-around good guy!
Prof Cryer is a teacher not only with clear goals and good feedback but also the type of guy I would grab a beer with. He's personable and very knowledgeable in different subjects making him a great person to talk to. The class (ENG105) was very interesting and enjoyed his theme of death denial and ego.
Mike (as he wants you to call him) is a pretty solid teacher. He's also writes poetry and has published his own book, so there's that too. Honestly, kinda creeped me out at some times, but I don't think it was intentional. There's 3 major essays and that's about it. Pretty easy class, and he's pretty funny at times.
Best English professor I ever had. He gives you interesting topics to write about/you choose your own, which makes a class with a lot of writing more fun.
I loved Mike. He was a genuine, cool dude. He is a tough grader though. I thought I was doing well on my writing in his class and he encouraged me, leading to believe I was, but at the end of each paper, I would get a grade that didn't make sense. Write to his liking and you'll do fine.
We talked about a wide array of interesting topics and the papers were fairly open ended. Professor Cryer really encouraged the students to evaluate themselves and the texts more thoroughly and gave us the guidance and materials necessary to reach the levels of analysis he expected in the papers. This was my favorite class this semester.
Professor Cryer is the best. He is straightforward and clear. His course is easy if you do everything he asks. You have a lot of participation but if you do the work you will get an A. All of the papers were simple. Cryer makes the course fun.
Awesome and interesting professor! He bases the class and examples around one topic, so it feels like everything connects. The participation is easy and there is not a lot of homework except for the four papers throughout the semester (but he also gives you time in class to work on them). I would highly recommend him!
Professor Cryer is a really great guy. His life is very interesting and I enjoyed listening to him tell stories about himself. He has a very interesting perspective on a lot of things and I left his class feeling inspired in ways I never had before. You're gonna have to do some reading for sure but besides that it was a pleasure to be in his class.
Definitely, take his class. I am not a fan of writing but his essays were very straightforward and simple. Sometimes he would tell you not to go over the word count because he didn't want to read it all. Very laid back. If there's a bad review about him its probably because the person was loud and obnoxious. Extremely happy I took his class.
For this class, the grade was pretty much participation and 3 papers, I highly recommend him for previous AP students. He also has really good stories!
If you are taking honors english you are likely already a good writer. Dr. Cryer does not challenge students to improve writing mechanics necessarily, but he does challenge students to think differently. The papers are interesting and relatively easy -- he allows PLENTY of time to finish them. A few readings, no other homework.
Super happy with him, glad he was the teacher I got because English can be tough. Having a great teacher makes the class better.
Prof. Cryer is super cool. The class was super planned out and came full circle. You only write three papers and those determine your grade.
There are very few grades in this class and the only homework is your essay. He was really easy going and I enjoyed the class.
I loved class with Professor Cryer. He was hilarious and helpful with writing conferences. I would take again in a heartbeat. Show up to class, put some effort in, and you'll have no problem getting an A.
Professor Cryer was my favorite professor this semester, and I know all of my classmates agree. He is friendly and laidback, while still being extremely helpful and knowledgeable on the subject. I always looked forward to his class, and the topics we read/wrote about were always interesting.
Prof. Cryer is a great teacher that really challenges you to think differently. He is super sweet, and if you work hard you'll easily pass.
Professor Cryer made one of my least favorite classes bearable. He is so funny and intelligent and really cares about what you have to say. Hes very laid back and doesnt really have a structure to his classes. He tells you exactly what he wants in your papers and respects all ideas. I only used the textbook once.
The class is graded off three very straight forward papers that are quite easy to write and research for. Lectures can be boring sometimes but if you like conspiracy theories he is the professor for you. All together the class is an easy A and he is a pretty great human being.
Professor Cryer bases his class around a specific topic (conspiracy/truth), which made the overall class very interesting and engaging. He's a very approachable professor, and will answer pretty much any question you have regarding your papers. If you're proficient at writing, Cryer's a great choice for your English course.
I love this man. He is the coolest professor ever and his class is actually enjoyable (for an english class). Essays are easy, he gives you clear guidelines, and he's not a very tough grader. I wish he taught more classes
super nice guy, any questions you had were answered in a respectful way. Only graded on 3 papers really. funny guy, jokes around and appreciated when you joke around too but know when to work.
hes read these reviews and will tell you he wants you to get the book. He will say he doesnt care what rate my professor says but just letting you know dont get the book you still dont touch it. He takes awhile to grade things & is very philosophical. I was extremely bored and did not like his style of teaching. Lots of group discussion
Professor Cryer is a great teacher who knows how to help you grow as a writer without burning you out. His class was always pretty interesting and the readings, although sometimes long, were always thought provoking. If, like me, you are a STEM major being forced to take an English class, he is the professor to have.
Love Prof. Cryer! He's hilarious, has clear grading criteria, and is always available during office hours for extra help. The in-class group discussion board posts are very straightforward and the readings aren't too bad. 3 essay assignments for the whole semester. He also does 1-on-1 essay conferences and in-class peer review, which help a lot.
I found Michael Cryer's class to be philosophically deep towards the beginning of the year with a lot of homework readings and discussions. There is pretty much a group discussion every class about the homework. Be prepared to write 3 essays, but they are easy to get feedback for. Cryer makes class enjoyable for the most part with his humor.
He really cared about his students and it was really easy to ask questions! Only had to do a couple of essays that were really clear and easy to understand and he was pretty lax during class. He gives you a ton of time to get work done. Also his lectures were really fun and personal.
Made class interesting. Accessible outside of class to help with papers, which are always open-ended to let the student be creative. Gives good feedback in class but can get even more by going to office hours. Says to buy the textbook but you will never use it because assigned readings are gone over in class
Professor Cryer is super funny and laid-back, and most of his assignments were actually useful (not busywork). Homework (very rare) was simply reading short essays out of the textbook or online to be discussed in class. His class has a theme around narratives/storytelling, and he has some awesome lectures on conspiracy theories.
The class is easily organized and the majority of your grade comes from 3 major essays that you do in the class. You also work on a portfolio throughout the year and can edit it to be your own. Daily work in groups and a lot of outside reading. Overall the class has very enjoyable lectures and Michael Cryer cares about his students.
Professor Cryer is a super fun professor-a real homie! His ENG105 course dives into conspiracy and news media bias. His class is really straightforward (three main essays, a digital portfolio, and easy in-class writing assignments). If you put in the effort to participate in class discussion and complete the required writings, you'll do amazing!
Cryer is a great professor. He's really laid back and class is really relaxed. If you put the effort in, you'll do fine. However, he says to get the book, but you really don't need it. We only read a few things from it, but even then we barely went over what we read. Discussion boards, 3 papers, and a portfolio- all are manageable.
Cryer was a really fun professor to get to know. The course was straightforward and your grade is pretty much determined from your essays and portfolio. The book isn't required for discussion posts so don't listen to him when he says you need it anyway despite the reviews on here! The criteria for essays is clear but he didn't give great feedback.
Professor Cryer is funny and makes the class enjoyable. There are 3 main essays and if you follow the rubric, they are all easy A's. There is no +/- scale in this class by the way. There is also an easy discussion post every class.
Spectacular instructor. Passionate about English and not once did I feel like I was doing busy work. Discussion posts, textbook readings, 3 essays, and that's about it! Felt like a excellent continuation of my high school AP Literature experience.
I would highly recommend taking Cryer for ENG105. Over the course of the semester, you write three essays. The first is a rhetorical analysis, the second is a persuasive essay, and the third is a reflective analysis. We also read a great book called We Are the Weather. Usually there was a simple assignment due each class and he would go over it.
I recommend Cryer especially if you have taken a higher level english course in high school before as it should not be too hard. Not too much work. The homework related to the class material and I found the subjects he chose to be quite interesting and the 3 essays are manageable.
I took this class in Spring 2020 and Cryer was a fantastic professor. Every week or so we would have homework assignments and the three essays were fairly easy to write. Also, the students got to interact with each other more often than lectures. I would highly recommend this class.
Took Professor Cryer for English 102. There's 3 essays throughout the whole semester and 2 simple discussion board assignments per week. Really laid back and an open-minded guy. He's not going to ding you for exploring topics he might disagree with. If you want a straightforward, fairly relaxed English class, take Professor Cryer.
Great professor, this class was fun and interesting without being too much work. Only 3 essays total and some discussion posts usually every week. If you're in Barrett, this class is basically Human Event but wayyy easier. Attendance is mandatory. Cryer seems like he'd be a really fun person to be around in-person.
Not a very heavy grader, as long as you meet the requirements and do the enjoyable homework you won't have a problem. The only reason I don't have an A is that I don't enjoy English so I definitely didn't give 100%, but Professor Cryer made it fun and enjoyable even for me so I would take his class again
I missed a lot of class this semester due to my mental health, but I was still doing well in the class. I had a B, but he told me that I was going to have to re-take it because I had too many absences. I personally thought this was unfair because I had a pretty good grade, so I wouldn't recommend taking his class if you struggle with attendance.
Easy grader on most assignments + participation; essays are well thought-out and constructive. His lectures are engaging and he's very laid back and casual, which was very refreshing coming from an English teacher.
Professor Cryer was phenomenal ! Truly one of the best professors I had at ASU and I recommend him for every incoming freshman/transfer student alike. His lectures are interesting and he takes a philosophical view throughout the course. He challenges you to think and participate in class. Seriously good professor.
Dr. Cryer is great! He's super flexible with work and always responds to e-mails promptly! Loved his class, great lectures, and awesome sense of humor. Definitely take his class if you have the chance!
Cryer is a solid choice for English class IMO. Very strict on attendance which sucks because class is boring & we barely do anything. Our readings were engaging + we aligned a lot in interests (psychology, philosophy). Good sense of humor & overall a cool man. Lots of discussion but participation isn't mandatory. DB post due before every class.
Cryer is an interesting and smart professor. Class material was interesting and engaging. It covered personal bias and he had us write a unique style of essay at the end of the year where we reflected on our experiences and how they shape the way we view the world. Definitely recommend both as an interesting class and for laidback grading.
Cryer was chill and funny. He likes talking to the students about random things, it was very refreshing. We write about 4 papers total throughout the semester. Pretty much the same as AP Lang, but easier. He is a good grader, helps a lot with peer review. There's a discussion post needed before every class.
He's so funny, but be sure to get your work in on time.
Awesome guy, super funny and nice (especially if you talk with him one on one). Gives really nice feedback and is willing to work with you to get your papers where you want them.
Only three papers for the entire semester with ample time to do them. He also assigns smaller assignments that can help you with your essays. Though it is necessary to attend class, it is enjoyable. The class consists of discussions about the reading homework and exciting stories. Highly recommend taking this professor.
Great professor. If you're taking ENG 105, DEFINITELY take Cryer.
He's a very chill professor. Some of his paper prompts were confusing but he gives you lots of opportunities to ask questions if needed. Pretty easy grader. All homework is for completion so just do it for the points. Gives lots of time to complete essays and has scheduled peer review sessions which were helpful.
most classes were discussion based but participation not graded. only three papers that make up your whole grade but generally easy, besides the vagueness of the rubric and lack of one for the third. only gives whole letter grades (no + or -).
Cryer is really chill. Attendance is required but you're doing work most of the time so it's not a boring lecture fest. Most stuff is graded on participation other than the essays which he gives you a lot of time to write and schedules time for individual advice during class. Overall super interesting guy with a ton of good stories!
I honestly loved Prof Cryer and his lectures. Definitely the first English class I've enjoyed and felt challenged in- I was a little sad this was also my last ever English class.
An eccentric guy, very passionate about the course. Most of your grade is completion based, besides the 3 essays. You get to choose your topic for essays, which makes them more fun to write. You are required to attend, but you are usually doing an activity instead of a boring lecture. There is a textbook but he provides it digitally. Good teacher
First English class that I genuinely enjoyed. The first half of the course was definitely slightly harder than the 2nd half, but overall it was fairly easy. There are three papers, each about 1500 words each. The in class discussions were fun and interesting. He fosters a sociable class of English students.
Cryer makes this first-year writing course genuinely engaging. The paper prompts can be tricky, but he provides ample guidance. Aided by Unstuck ai, I breezed through the assignments. An overall rewarding experience.
You can tell he puts a lot of thought and truly loves his field. The writing projects we did were very fair in my opinion, one analysis one, one about ourselves, and a third essay I forgot, but it was decently interesting. We do have readings and have to answer questions about them but not many. Not a hard class and not homework heavy.
Honestly one of the worst professors I had at ASU. I took this course because it was needed but I would choose a different professor if I had to take this course again. I had missed class due to getting pink eye and made sure to send an email. He let me know I needed to come to class to pass and forced me to come in then called me out during class.
Stupidly easy course. No work at all. Super easy grader
Prof Cryer is chill. Readings could be a bit time consuming for a basic required English class, and I never got feedback from him on any of my writing (it was all peer reviews), but I'm sure you could if you ask/go to office hours. He's approachable, and obviously very passionate about the topic.
Professor Cryer was very chill, and he was extremely lovable. He only required students to write 3 essays throughout the entire semester, and it was all added onto a personal E-portfolio that allowed each student's creativity to shine. Even though the homework readings weren't entirely exciting, his class was great overall.
Professor Cryer is clearly passionate about the subject he teaches and I was entertained by his classes. Though I feel his grading could include more feedback and may have been more strict than anticipated, this class is not absurdly difficult by any means.
Honestly one of the worst professors i've come across at asu, Let him know I would be late for class a week earlier, because of a medical appointment I couldn't miss at all and he still called me out as soon as i entered the class and tried to make an example out of me, terrible would never recommend him to anyone
Great guy, not much reading, three essays. Not hard at all, but entirely up to you if you want to write about something that actually promotes your growth or is simple and easy. He'll know which one you pick. You won't get away with AI. He's a nice guy unless you try AI.
Very funny, nice professor. His lectures are actually very interesting. However, your grade matters entirely on the 3 essays you do, and he is a tough grader. I loved the class though.
I literally had 44% completed in the homework ca
I literally had 44% done in homework and still ended with a B. If you score well on your essays, it is impossible to fail. Submissions are unnecessarily complicated, i.e. you make a new google drive folder and submit through there and on canvas but in a separate section than what shows on your dashboard. Class is really boring.
Chill, doable amt of hw. Class discussions and hw readings are interesting, and his passion for English is evident. The essays we write are constructive and thought-provoking. If you put effort in, you'll learn a lot. He gives little writing feedback, though- it's all peer review. Regardless, this was a class I enjoyed more than I thought I would.
