Excellent orator who makes class fun and interesting; goes off topic too often.

Good teacher - fun to go to class. Hardest marker I have encountered.
Very interesting, needs to stick to course outline more.
Assignments are vague, teaching frazzeled and pass or fail grading senseless.

Hard marking in assignment, but high marks in overall grade and fun class

Totally crazy and fun... assignments were confusing
Although funny, but no good to have him as an English instructor.
Great teacher. Very clear that he cares about students.
The funniest and most interesting prof that I have ever had take 145 if you can
i recommend this prof
Easy class. If you show up impossible to fail. He enjoys teaching.
Very nice fellow; obviously cares about the students...but unclear standards.
He has good points but they aren't very useful.
Clear. Concise. Knowledgable. Vibrant. Non-linear. Passionate. Helpful. Kind.
Take 240 with Cullen! Lots of fun. Interesting. Learned so much.
this guy ROCKS.people who complain about him are all whiners with no imagination
Cullen is wacky, out-there, and also the best writing prof you could imagine!
Awesome prof! Was the first one I had at UVic and wish there were more like him.
Profs don't get much better.............

A writing course can't get any better
great prof! teaches clearly and effectively
HORRIBLE.... it would have been fine if he didn't pick 2 or 3 favorites. Brutal!
funny guy. keeps it interesting
So helpful and understanding. This was such a fun class.
Is all over the board with his notes, but is fabulous
excellent. take his course. He's funny and really really smart. Don't use ing!
knowledge of old and new, all over the board with notes, hilarious, YOU'RE GREAT
Great professor, encourages hard work and thinking.
Great guy,CAN'T teach..Notes are terrible.Good for a laugh, frustrating notes
are you joking? He's boring, slow, arrogant and A WASTE OF TIME
An interesting prof but unorganized. Also inconsistent with his marking.
what can I say, very 'intresting' class
Very unclear lectures.
Very knowledgeable but his lectures are more about philosophy and his tests are more about history. Very unorganized. Read the text introduction.
Cullen is a superb Prof. You need to think hard and be creative to do well in his class; he makes it VERY clear what you need to do. STUPENDOUS PROF!!!
worst english prof that I have had at Uvic. He picks favorites, marks inconsistantly and lectures unclearly. can you say HORRIBLE
The best writing teacher I've seen. He'll kill me for using two 'ing' words here.
Not sure what he wanted. I doubt he knows what he wanted. Top marks go to the brown nosers I guess; the rest of us were graded using tea leaves.
Funny and nice, but inconsistent. My assignments would bounce between a C+ and an A+. I figured I was being inconsistent, so I showed him two papers and asked him to point out what the A+ paper had that the C+ lacked. He didn't have an answer. :(
Great class! Good teacher, keeps you intersted, very funny.
He is one dead sexy man!!
My English class with him was the only class this semester that i didn't dread going to. He was hilarious! Every class was a laugh-fest from start to finish. He made the material fun and interesting. I learned a lot, and had a blast.
Lectures were confusing. Doesn't seem to enjoy teaching. Wouldn't recommend him if you have a choice.
Difficult to keep up with. He's vague and his lectures are all over the map. Extremely fun to listen to, however, and funny as hell. Don't concentrate too hard on taking notes; just sit back and enjoy his ranting. Very rewarding if you can follow him.
He's fun to listen to, but I don't think he knows what he wants. Very vague and unhelpful. Beware. Get on this guy's good side early on.
This guy turned me right off of an English major. Very mean and picks favorites! Doesn't give constructive cricism. One of the worst prof's I've had at UVIC and the worst first year prof by a mile. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE.
Hard to decifer. You think you did well on a paper and then you get a C. Make sure you do it exactly his way cause if not he doesn't like it. He doesn't mark on content but writing style. Crazy man but still interesting.
He is a very inconsiderate prof. He would keep you in class long after the class is over and he knows it himself. He marks on the style you write and he's never clear on what he wants from you in your writing.
Great prof. Showed up for every class just to see what crazy thing he'd do next. Turned a very boring class into something tolerable. Now if only he could teach physics...
Absolutely fabulous. He is what an English prof should be: creative, engaging, knowlegable, and mildly insane. A wonderful experience.
Best professor I had this year. Only class I never fell asleep in. Gave me a whole new appreciation for the course material.
He cracks me up. He is definately insane, but also really wants you to do well. If you just sort of sit back and absorb his rants you will learn more than if you try to take notes.
WORST PROF I ever had. Parlessly incompetant. Actually gave WRONG information in class. Had to be corrected by students. Ridiculous. Marks on style not content. Doesn't even have a graduate degree in English. Each class was agony. NEVER take him.
Hillarious
WORST teacher at UVIC! I would do a better job at teaching English. Who ever hurd of not using 'ing' ending words... Give me a break. GET A MASTERS and a new ego and maybe I won't point and laugh when I see you on the street. HORRIBLE!
How can you not like this guy? He is great. But only if you go and see him in his office. Get him to proofread things before you hand them in and you can't go wrong. That is the key to success in his class.
A breath of fresh air. You will not fall asleep. The end of class will creep up on you. He's fun and faaaantastic.
This guy is as dry as toast and he's a pretentious, arrogant, rude, un-inspiring, negative disgrace to the English Language. This dude needs to get off his high-horse and realize that not all students share his viewpoints.
Awesome. If you're up to it this teacher thinks way outside the box. He is intelligent, casual, enlightened, entertaining and inspiring (oh no - two "ing" words!) all at once. He responds really well to people who can see what he is really about
I loved this class, attending it was a pleasure. He made us read out loud though, I didn't enjoy that so much! I didn't do too well on the mark front in this class because my writing style was not what he wanted, but if you want a lively prof he's great!
By far my favorite teacher after finishing first year.He will describe to you exactly what he wants if you approach or e-mail him.Made an effort to learn students names.Classes very entertaining, and informative.Chose interesting pieces to read.
This guy is fully off his rocker. Some days he entertained and inspired me. Other days I wanted to stab him. He makes an effort to learn student's names, has students read aloud in class, chooses interesting material, and thoroughly dissects the material in class. Overall, enjoyable.
Awesome prof. Basically every word that leaves his mouth is worth listening to. He's hilarious and each class goes by so quickly! He expects decent effort, but makes the assignments fun, not boring which is what I expected. I would highly recommend him, he's probably the best prof I've had at uvic!
This guy is funny but doesnt seem to know alot. He's very unclear in what he wants of you and has a totally outside the box way of thinking. Not a very good english prof at all, but enjoyable to say the least.
He is amazing. Eccentric, off the wall, insane, but so inspirational and intriguing. You'll never miss one of his classes. He's a tough marker, but spoon feeds the class the material, so if you shouw up and listen, you'll be fine. Love this man, think he should run the university, hell the country!
Great teacher, very effective, very funny
Quirky prof. Fun, interactive class. If you follow his rules you'll do well. He needs to be clearer on due dates for assignments. He drills methods into your head by repeating them every class. An interesting, if not perplexing, experience overall.
Professor Cullen is quite an entertaining professor. My writing skills definitely improved this semester. He is very helpful out of class.
Not hung up on grammar. Teaches the important things.
Give your head a shake! This man is the worst part of the University. Unfortunately this website will not allow me to call this professor the things I would like to call him. Horrible.
Of all my profs at UVic, he's in my top 3. Instead of teaching you the 'right' way, he teaches the 'smart' way. A tip for his classes is 'Stand Out'. If he knows you're going for an A, chances are, he'll help you. All in all, an excellent prof!
I don't know what is more disorganized, his hair or his lessons. He has no English Qualifications... MA's in Psych and Soci. He picked favourites. He told me I was a "B" Writer. I guess I shouldn't tell him that the next two years I had an "A" average and have won English Scholarships. Thanks for nothing other than a will to prove him wrong.
This instructor's teaching style takes frustration to a new level: he is repetitive, unclear, muddled and condescending. I haven't stuck my tongue out at an intructor since I was 14 - but found myself doing it to him - he is patronising. At times I though he may be suffering from some kind of dementia, but no, he's just in his own happy world.
If english is not your strong suit, don't take his classes, if you're just taking it because you have to, find another prof, and don't waste this ones time. He's incredibly inteligent, but plays alot of games. He's challenging, and frustrating, but he'll teach you tons if you stick with it. Most satisfying classes i've ever taken at University.
The past four months in this course have been a dizzying waste of time and money. The prof was annoyingly repetitive. His deadlines and lectures were unclear, and did not follow the syllabus. Two classes were cancelled. Definitely not what I'd expected from a "professional" writing course.
love his class

Funny man...makes english interesting. I would definately recommend him. Just remember to say "Thank you".
An amiable person, but somewhat unclear as a teacher. His lectures often contain interesting kernels of insight surrounded by puzzling remarks. Some might enjoy his casual approach to teaching more than others. Be prepared for getting called on frequently in class, and don't say 'um'.

Michael Cullen is not only a professor of English, he should be a professor of life! His English classes are to the point and he explains things that would assist in the development of every student. The power of nothing, nothing is more powerful than the power of nothing. Just an example of a few wise words by Cullen.
An amazing and inspiring prof- In my 5 years of University, this was one of the most valuable courses I took; I use the info to this day in scholastic and business endeavors. Professional writing is a must-have for us all and he is an excellent source of information you will use for life. If you have the chance take a pro. writing course with him.
Cullen is a great guy, hilarious, intelligent and class is never boring, but damn he marks hard for a first year eng prof that most people are just taking as a requirement!! You will learn a lot though, just prepared to work for it. And, yeah. Don't say um.
Cullen is entertaining and you will never look at the clock in his class. His assignments are unclear but you are guarenteed to get between a C+ and B. To get a good mark you need to be on of his favorites. If you aren't he will not care about you or your grade.....AT ALL.
Cullen rocks! Class was enjoyable and assignments were fine if you pay attention and do a bit of work. Tough if you do it all at the last minute. Tons of valuable material in lectures. Cullen's a cool guy
Definitely picks favourites. Assignments very unclear. Doesn't have much of a grading scheme. Loves being rude. Makes the class very interesting but frustrating if you are used to getting the mark you deserve. Made us create our own textbook at the end of the class with all his handouts/lectures paraphrased. Be warned!

marks way to hard and is not to helpful nice interesting man though
Oh, gosh. It was like a nebula; interesting, but foggy. Here's a summary: likes color pictures on title pg, take out "we", "the reader", etc in essays, write like you talk, don't say "um", a good title can raise a letter grade, picks on people to read and then interrupts. Has a skewed sense of humor. But...he's nice--at least to me. =)
Very interesting guy. You could probably learn something from him...if he was your buddy. He's got a TON of useful communication knowledge (you can tell: he always macks on all the women -- and is GOOD at it). He's a little unclear as to what he expects; if he could present his class in a more structured format he would be a fantastic prof.
I completely idolize michael cullen.
cullen is entertaining. i don't think you could ever be bore din his class. the assignments are very unclear, but once you figure them out they are very useful
Cullen is an awesome prof. You work for your marks (which some people aren't used to). Welcome to life. Class is always lively. He doesn't pick favorites, he realizes students' efforts. If you work hard, he will like you. Go to every class and write down EVERYTHING he says! By FAR the most useful course I have taken at UVic.
Great Prof! He really opens your eyes and teaches you not only communications but life skills. You'll have to work hard and come to class to get a good mark. Textbook assignment was awesome. He's willing to help you and writes great reference letters. Lectures are not structured and expectations can be unclear. Overall one of uvic's best
Funny guy. Didn't learn a whole lot, but definitely picked up some stylistic ideas.
The way he taught information...it just seemed to stick in your head. I am a better writer for his class and so sad to hear he is gone. Nice man!
Miss him terribly.
Cullen was amazing. Most inspirataional prof I have had. Sadly missed.
Remembering Michael still brings tears to my eyes. His amazing influence has touched my life in so many ways... He will be forever missed and revered as a terrific and dedicated teacher, a gifted writer, and a great man. RIP.
Cullen was a truly incredible man. He was an amazing teacher. He made going to class every day such a joy, plus I learned a lot. When I heard that he had passed away I was so upset, and I think of him often. My sincerest apologies go out to his friends and family, as I'm sure he is incredibly missed. A special man who changed the lives of so many.
