Very good teacher, lots of reading. If you don't read you won't pass. Tests are very general over too many notes. It helps to write outlines from his test study guides. Pay close attention to all he says!
keeps class interesting with lectures but tests are extremely hard. way too many notes. papers help grade but generally there is no curve.
He is very energic during his lectures. He keeps you interested and wanting to know more about the subject. But, he gives a lot of notes and talks very fast. His test are not very easy you must study everything he said in order to pass.
Don't be late to class!
Im not a history major, but a history buff so this class isnt all to difficult. To most students, it seems hard to cram all this info in a survey class, and a lot of students complain of this. GUYS THIS IS A SURVEY CLASS! show up on time a 10, study, take the notes, and De Nie is a drywit teacher A+
Once we had a rvw session & 1st test, that helped undertand what he wanted. Dates and details are very important to him. Very passionate sometimes with his lectures, makes others intested in listening. Very effective teacher overall. I'm getting a B in his class this semester, ha!
Great professor but talks too fast. A must to get the notes and attend class tests are on what he says not what you read. Very interesting will make you like history. Don't be late to class or he will humilate you.
One of my most favorite teachers at West Georgia so far. He explains the material in a story-like manner, which makes it much easier to understand. You must be able to listen well and take good notes if you want to pass. He is also one of the best dressed teacher's at West Georgia.
Talks really fast and gives tons of information you won't need for the exams. Probably one of the most fair professors in the department. I would recommend him if you are willing to spend some time preparing for his essays with a classmate. He makes you laugh during class and he is REALLY cute!
His tests are not easy, but I learned more from his class than any class that I have taken so far. He talks quickly, but he is worth it. I'm not a big history buff - but I have come to appreciate history becuase of him. And he's nice eye candy too!
This is one of the best professors I have ever had. He gives lots of information and expects you to work hard. It is a gratifying A when you get one in his class because you know you deserve it. I have taken both sections of this class and will take him again in the fall. A must for a history major/minor.
awesomeawesomeawesome. he's attractive and i loved the way he lectures - like he's telling a story. he'll go over anything as many times as needed to help you understand, so dont worry about the speed of his lectures - raise your hand, or speak out and he's more than willing to help! MUST ATTEND CLASS TO PASS, and do the assigned readings.

Intimidating. Great teacher, knows more about the subject matter than any other professor i've had up to date. Tests are difficult. Must be able to take good notes in class in order to pass...get ready to write. I would take another class taught by him, but only if i were able to devote a significant amount of time to it.
Great speaker. Makes history lectures humurous and interesting. He is one of my favorite professors so far at West Georgia. He does talk very fast and if you want to do well in his classes you need to be able to write very fast or remember what he is saying.
Excellent lecturer. Smart and amusing. Obvious passion for teaching and relays the information clearly, quickly and well attired. Demand and reciprocates respect. Be prepared to write lots of notes and be fairly challenged on tests. I have actually retained what I learned. I admire him for his mind but is fair on the eyes as well.
De Nie is a very helpful teacher. It's to your advantage if you come to class, but try not to ever be late because class begins when it suppose to begin! He is a speedy professor and a lot is covered during one lecture but you get the test before hand and are aware of what is important. If you're good at taking notes and studying them, go for it!!
Go to class just to watch people get chewed out for being late! It's hilarious! "Class begins and 11" he'll say and then follow you w/ his eyes until you sit down. Seriously, a great professor. Knows his stuff and makes it interesting. You get what you put into it which is fair. We had to read a book and write a paper. Tests are all essays.
How much cooler could a professor be! Awesome lectures. Totally engaging!!
Go to class, take notes, and pay attention! He definitely knows his history!
He's tough, but fair. Show up for class and take notes. Make sure to have a pretty good understanding of the major events and how they relate to other stuff. Have a vague understanding of every key term. And for God's sake, do NOT show up late for class by even a second! (It's entertaining for everyone else when you do...)
Lectures are intense- but very informative!!! Great sense of humor- and very willing to help, as long as you put forth effort
Dude rocks.... lot of info that makes it hard, but it was an awesome class!
Dr. de Nie is a great professor. He is a good lecturer and he is not that difficult to get a hold of. The books he chooses for the class to read for interesting and I would recommend other students to take him.
GREAT PROFESSOR!!! Best History Professor at West Georgia. I had him for World History and British History. He always kept my attention. An hour and 15 minutes flew by. DO NOT BE LATE and BE PREPARED TO WRITE A LOT!!! You will know the stuff after the class.
Dr. De Nie is great: very articulate, concise, and humorous. He is willing to help all students, he talks fast but has no problem repeating himself. He has an infectous passion for history which is very evident in the way he lectures- he makes you thirst for knowledge like no other professor I know.
He is a wonderful teacher! I always loved going to his class and listening to his lectures. He is very passionate about history. He sometimes talks fast but will repeat anything if you just ask. His test can be hard but he gives you the essay questions before hand. I strongly recomend taking him if you can!
It isn't hard to earn a B, but it would be hard to make an A.
I'm history hajor about to graduate, and I just think everybody needs to know Denie is the best history I have ever had!!! Just take him, it will be fine and you will learn.
You take a tone of notes every lecture. You will write till your hand hurts. Seems to be a fair grader and he wants his students to pass. If you ever have any questions just send him an e-mail.
Take your comp. to class to type notes cause you miss more by handwriting. Nice and wants everyone to do well. Is willing to explain things. essays are his tests but gives study guides, so do outlines beforehand and you'll easily make a B. An A is a bit harder.
He is a good teacher who is obviously very knowledgeable of History. Be prepared to take PAGES of notes (I filled a whole notebook +), read all the assigned articles (he likes to quiz on first couple), and show up BEFORE class begins. He will call you out for being tardy. On the whole, he was an energetic teacher who wants his class to do well.
Dr. DeNie is an excellent instructor. His lectures are very interesting - his class is like story time! Pull up a seat and listen to the way he magically makes history come to life! But Beware!! You'd better take very good notes and write quickly!! Overall - I LOVED DeNie's Class and recommend it to everyone taking "HIST 1112 (since 1500)"
Awesome professor. He really knows his stuff. His class is difficult, but if you want to really learn the material he's where it's at. If you are a History major you have to take this guy.
Dr. de Nie is an extremely intelligent guy with a depth of knowledge about Ireland's history. His class is very challenging and, if you're looking for an easy A, this is not the right class for you. Even though his class is difficult, he is motivated to teach and wants his students to do well. If you like history definitely take his class.
Do not put yourself through this! Hardest intro level class ever. Idk why all of his other ratings are so good. I had to work ridiculously hard to get an 89 and I've been on the dean's list every sem of my college career. Any professor would be easier than him for HIST 1112. Tests are all essays, don't buy the book-just write everything he says!
This class is awful for a core class. He is very intimidating and his class is extremely boring. Do NOT be one minute late or he will call you out in front of everyone. His tests are all essay and they must be very detailed in order to receive a high grade.
Hes a strict elitist but he teaches on that level as well. his class is tough, better be a fast note writer and not miss a detail on the essay tests to get B's or A's on them. His project allot is not clear but you should get a B on that. If your a history lover hes the man for you if your not you might want to take someone else.
Great teacher! Not easy AT ALL, but don't let that scare you off. Classes are like story time!! All you have to do is take good notes in class and you will pass! I got B's on all my tests (3) and a 91 on my paper & I HATE history. His TA also gave a review session before each test (during class) & he basically outlines the essay questions for you!
No textbook. 4 Chapter-books. 3 papers thesis format. Asks opinions of class on last day, doesn't consider suggestions unless your one of the few who enjoyed the class. You may enjoy him if you are a brainiac and like to be graded as an English Major on papers, otherwise avoid him.
Confusing. No textbook. Four books, three papers. Graded like an English paper. Intelligent, asks opinions but blows you off if you don't agree. Tough grader. Sarcastic.
He was great. He went over evrehting and alwys asks if you have it before he moves on. He asks that you visit during office hours. You only do poorly in his class if ou don't try. He will work with you, and he is completely fair. He does what he says he'll do, but his class is not easy. You will have to work hard.
Absolutely HATED this class and I love history! Dropped it and picked up another hist 1112 class and got an A. I definitely DO NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR TIME!
Dr. de Nie comes off as mean, but he is super nice. Go to every class because his notes are not from the book. Also, make yourself known to him. He is always willing to help with everything, but be willing to work.
Dr. de Nie seems very intimidating when you go in. He only grades based on 3 Essay Exams and 1 paper. He lectures the entire class, but is interesting and will repeat himself. Go to his office hours with your outlines for tests and the paper! He is a very nice person and will help you a lot if you go see him.
Dr. de Nie is completely FAIR, funny, knows his stuff & cares about you learning the material. Go by his office and show you care about your grade. It will benefit you in the long run. I took his Maymester and I've learned so much! Not an "easy A" but what's the point of going to college for an easy A?
I hated this class. He talks so fast and is very strike with being on time. His test were so hard, the highest grade I received was a C. His gives three test and random quizzes based off of the required readings and articles. For the test he gives test questions, but not the IDs, which made the test a little hard. He grades his papers very hard too
He's a tough grader because this is a 3000 level class, but he was extremely helpful and interested in assisting students. Sarcastic, likes joking around. Expects a lot from you but gives a lot to you, lectures are entertaining and informative.
Dr. De Nie is the best professor I have taken at UWG, and this is my third year. I am a History major and this class made me 100% sure this is what I want to do. De Nie is fair, knowledgeable, and helpful. If you are actually interested in learning the material and earning the grade take Dr. De Nie.
I don't think I've ever had a more passionate instructor. He really knows his stuff and he cares immensely. Professor de Nie will stop if you need him to during his lectures and repeats himself several times. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP AND BE ON TIME! I would definitely take his class again.
STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! I cannot stress this enough! Participation is important. Good notes are imperative to passing his class. He is very helpful and makes sure you can catch up to everything he is saying. He's a great professor and very enjoyable. I highly recommend taking him!
very passionate about his job. Come to class on time. Make friends in class, you're going to need them during study time.
If he catches you on your phone the first time that's a letter grade from your final grade. So instead of having up to a chance of getting an A in the class you only have a chance to get B. If he catches you on your phone for the second time then you fail the course. Expect lots of reading. Also, he doesn't use powerpoint, he just talks.
He is a little intimidating at first, but actually has a really caring personality. He is willing to go above and beyond to help you with your paper. He will almost always make time to meet with you. He is very professional, but can be very funny. Overall, he is a great professor who wants his students to succeed.
Denie is an intimidating guy. His tests are sink or float. I am a punctual student and took the best notes I could and still hardly passed. FRESHMAN AVOID THIS CLASS. Upperclassmen may be fine, after having similarly rigorous classes.
Dr. de Nie is definitely the most passionate professor I have encountered. His classes are interesting. I would stress GREAT note taking, and make sure anything he writes on the board or repeats, you write down. Take advantage of his office hours. Make outlines and get him to proofread your paper, it will help! He wants you to be successful.
One of my favorite professors! He is so passionate about the course he is teaching, and will do his best to help you understand. I would most definitely take his course again!
Terrible professor. He is passionate about History, but those who aren't so good at it better steer clear of him. He is nice, but very intimidating. Had to withdraw bc his tests are no multiple choice, all writing.
I am not a history major, with that said, this was the toughest class I have had yet. Professor de Nie is an extremely tough grader, and expects a lot from his students. If you are not a history major I would steer clear from him. No phones, at all. And do not be late, he will call you out.
Very tough grader. Exams are 2-3 essays with few multiple choice. Grades like an English professor. Spelling is Key for him. Strict with material. Lectures are just him talking. Write down everything! The essays need to be at least 3 paragraphs long and it better be exactly correct. If not a history major or a good writer, would not take!
I could not have handpicked a better professor for this class. He is VERY tough but he is ALWAYS willing to help you out. His lectures are very detailed. He gives outlines for his tests and will go over them if you go see him in his office. If I could take him for another class, I would. Don't procrastinate on studying or it will hurt you!
Great person! Hes very passionate about history. No phones in class. He will call you out. If youre not prepared to do work dont take this class. Tests are majority essays and can be difficult if you dont study a lot. No PowerPoints just straight lectures. Interesting class though.
If you are not a history major avoid this class! Worst teacher Ive ever had. If you are a freshman dont even think about taking this class.
Professor de Nie is cool and the way he presents History is informal and casual. Final grade is based on one essay, three exams (the third is the final exam), and primary sources. The downfall is that he gives the content orally and doesnt post any notes on CourseDen. This sucks because if you miss class, he wont give you any notes.
Lots of writing, but Dr. de Nie is available for feedback. Be ready to take notes, no powerpoints, just lecture. Lectures are interesting and Dr. de Nie is a good instuctor
He was an amazing teacher. I wont lie, he is a tough grader, but as asking as you study youll have no problems. Before every test there is a review session and they are generally helpful if you missed a certain class. He tells you everything literally everything.
He is a History and English major, so he takes writing as a way to go about things. All of his tests are like essays His homework is reading material, and sometimes typing up a response (which should always be printed). I recommend letting him look over test outlines and your book report (he will look over your report if you do it ahead of when due
Professor De Nie is the best history professor here at UWG. He gives great feedback but you have to be ready to read. There are also a lot of papers but he always allows you to email him before the paper is due so he can give you advice to get an A. I would take him again if he taught something that pertained to my major. 10/10 recommend him.
I took Dr. de Nie for HIST 1112 online this semester. Probably the most challenging class I have taken, but completely worth it. Dr. de Nie is extremely passionate about History. His class was very well organized. This class consisted 100% of writing, and I haven't made below an A on an assignment yet. LOVED this class and him!!
Ive never had a professor give more thorough detailed lectures than he does. He completely touches every detail you need to learn in a timely manner and has no problem going back over topics if you dont understand. Hes very animated in his lectures and it makes it easier to learn and better to enjoy!
Dont take him . Simple
Dr. de Nie is probably better in person than he is online. As a professor he's fine, but I don't think he teaches online classes very well. There's minimal interaction and you basically teach yourself. Read the readings, write a discussion post, write a paper, rinse and repeat. Easy, but vague on what he requires. He asks lots of questions.
While a cool and passionate guy, if you take this class prepare to read SO. MUCH. I know some people got through the class by just faking the work, but for an A you have to read everything and go above and beyond the minimum discussion posts, which was kinda annoying. You can do a podcast instead of bi-weekly papers tho, and it was a cool class.
Dr. Nie is an excellent professor. I took his online course for History 1112 and it was required for my major, but he was excellent in my opinion. Willing to meet and help you with any problems you may have and did zoom meetings. Lots of readings but pay attention to the essays and the writing assignments, if you do your work you will pass.
I usually make As easily. Michael De Nie is one of the worst professors i have ever had. No matter how hard you try, it will not be enough for an A. He says he gives good feedback, when i would constantly get feedback that consist of him highlighting a paragraph and only saying "no". Sitting in his lectures is painful. He talks at you. Avoid him!!!
I took his HIST 1112 class and he did a really good job. Definitely recommend. He grades you based off of 7 essays, 3 exam essays, and a General Education Assessment Essay rather than regular tests. So, if you do not like to write do not take his class. Also he posts lecture videos rather than using a textbook.
Expect to work really hard for a D. I almost quit college because of this teacher. It just sucks to know people like him dictate your academic success. something is telling me to continue fighting. It feels like a rigged system and it makes me depressed.
A lot of students don't like him, but I, (a history major), love him. His class is lecture-heavy, so you need to show up or you'll fail. He does not have lecture slides, so take notes. There's course content online that is discussed in class. He likes when you ask questions, do not be afraid to. HE HAS A CLEAR NO-PHONE POLICY, HE WILL FAIL YOU!!!!
Tough class but if you work hard he will respect it. Bumped me up to an A. Seems to be a very nice guy in my personal experience.
Good professor as long as you take notes/record lectures and complete your work on time. For his exams, he gives you a video explaining exactly what he is looking for, and even allows you to email him your outlines for feedback. As long as you complete authentic work and attend every lecture, you should pass!
He isn't terrible but he can be a tricky grade with the exams you write (if you don't take notes you will fail). He does PSWA which are either a 100 or a 0 based on if HE thinks you put enough effort in. Overall he can be a tricky grader but if you like writing and do test and quizzes online you'll be fine.
My favorite
Love this guy, amazing lectures and lots of writing. seems intense but he was my fave professor first semester
Dr. de Nie is a great professor! He is very passionate and engaging in his class. I hated history before his class, but he makes discussions so interesting, you can't help but be entertained. Do your work on time without outside sources. If you're struggling, ASK QUESTIONS! He is always available to answer them and his responses are very helpful!
Absolutely LOVED Dr. De Nie's class! He is one of the best lecturers I've ever had, and he gets really involved with the history; it makes you want to care about it as much as he does. I would definitely recommend taking his class if you're willing to learn, not just get an easy A.
Note-taking is key for the 3 exams (which are 2 handwritten essays). No being late, no phones, just pay attention! His lectures are amazing; you'll love history after this if you don't already. He will assist you with anything you need help with. I really enjoyed it his course though, just put in the work, and you'll be fine!
