What Students Say
“Deaver is an amazing professor, but he expects University level work out of students at a JC and that can be shocking”

Deaver knows his stuff, is fascinated by what he studies, and teaches like he expects everyone else to be fascinated too. His in-class work and take home projects tend toward very easy (1 page "essays" are the norm) but his tests are quite deman
Deaver is a control freak who takes it out on students. All homework is online and not available until two days before it is due (usually the weekend). He also holds your essays in front of you for the class to prove that he controls when you see them.
Class starts out very quickly. It took me over a month to get acclamated. Give the class some time even if you are lost and try to ignore some of the professors oddities and quirks. It turned out to be one of my favorite classes.
soooo dull. Take poli sci from anyone but this guy.
I was only in the class for a day because i dropped it. He was so boring I could'nt even listen to him without getting sleepy. Take any teacher but him.
He's the most boring nerd i've ever seen in my life and it's impossible to sit there and listen to him. I honestly have no idea how anyone would ever hire him as a teacher...BIG MISTAKE SIERRA COLLEGE! My advice is to not take his class!
Don't listen to the other pansy slackers that have rated this guy! Give him and chance and actually pay attention and you'll find that he knows his stuff like NONE OTHER. You will learn more than even you yourself can imagine so long as you're not a loser
His lectures are kinda boring, but he is a really smart guy and he knows what he is talking about.
I love Poli Sci and I was even considering to have it be my major. But after I took this class, I was extremely turned off. While he may be knowledgeable, he is boring and does not make things clear. I had As in high school gov't, but not here. The majority of his classes are failing. AVOID!!!
umbelievable how annoying this guy is. he is so up tight and just needs to get a life. his class is the first 'D' that i have ever got in my life. DO NOT TAKE HIM! you will regret it.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had at the college level. Deaver was uptight, boring, and I had a difficult time paying attention in a topic I once enjoyed. In class I would look around and 95% of the people were not paying attention. I got my only B since I started college.
he was way way boring. I had a hard time draging myself out of bed to go to his class cuz all I did was fall back to sleep anyway. it wasn't fun, but it wasn't really all that hard.
Never took a course from him, but talked with him many times; a very informed and extremely intelligent professor who knows his stuff. Comes across as being very dry, but very interesting and well versed in comparative gov. Nice guy as well. Wanted to take his classes, but never had room.
soooo dull. it was one of the worst classes i have taken. it was so hard to go everyday, the only reason i did was because i took it w/a friend and we dragged eachother there. gave you the notes though, but had no idea what was on the final. told you to go through you 100 pages of notes, basically.
extremely inteligent and he knows his stuff. if you want to really learn poli sci than take his class, but if you want an easy class look elsewhere.
He is incredibly dry and boring, however in his office he is willing to talk with you about anything, he is very smart and sorta liberal and doesnt allow much open debate, however you WILL learn if you try, his test are hard but simple and he gives little to no feedback, enjoyable learning not going
Dood... This class is hard, Deaver is unclear and his tests are extremely hard. Participate in class and the time will go buy a lot quicker. Lots of reading by the way.
Very boring teacher..which made learning even harder for me. For me to learn I need some interest, and I he didn't catch my interest. I could care less about how much he knows because how he taught was just in a extremely dull manner.
As many others have reported Deaver is pretty cut and dry. But you have to give him credit because he does know his stuff very well and if you do actually ask him questions in class, or during hius offices hours, he will take the time to explain everything throughly to you. reading the books isn't really necessary. rock stars to stay awake
He is very boring and you will often find yourself falling asleep in class, but he knows his stuff. Very intelligent and offers help if needed. Grades pretty hard, and is unlcear about his grading.
I hated politics before I took his class, but after his class, I hated politics even more! Deaver is a VERY BORING teacher. He is very cut and dry, his tests are unclear. If you don't write down the same views that he has, you're skrewed. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Yes, Deaver is dry, but I always knew what was expected. EVERYTHING (all the stuff on tests etc.) you need to know is in the syllabus. Subject was interesting, and assignments were minimal. I am taking him again next semester because I found the class very straightforward and simple.
he is a very difficult teacher with too high expectations for just a beginning course. his tests are almost impossible to pass, even if you memorized the material word-for-word.
If you're a poli sci major you should take this course...there is good material in this class. He's a fairly easy grader seeing as the material is fairly difficult. But HE IS VERY MONOTONE!!! So if you think you can stay awake...then TAKE this class!
dude, Why you guys got to hate on Deaver? He is the****. If maybe you were smart enough and listened, he's full of ****ing zinger jokes. Plus, he's so dry humor it's fun saying stuff in class and seeing his reaction. He only deals with that if you know your stuff though.
awesome teacher. you guys just need to pay attention. he has an intimadating tie collection.
hard teacher, tough grader, and not fun. Only class I've EVER started to fall asleep in.
I thought Prof Deaver was a good teacher. He is boring and his tests are dificult, BUT he is very clear on his expectations. As long as you go to class and read the material you will do fine. He is a nice guy, don't be fooled by his seriousness. I didnt know ANYTHING about politics when I entered the class and I got an A. Hes a good teacher.
Horrible teacher, the class is worth a total of 100 points, so you get quizzes worth like 1.6 points. He is extremely dull and boring and makes the class horrible, the worst teacher I've had at Sierra. He makes Ben Stein's character in Ferris Bueller's Day Off look full of life.

This class is so boring. after just 15mins i was ready to fall asleep. for the test i hope your ready to write a page essay for every question. very unclear on his grading.
I wanted to be a Poli Sci major, with study in law, but after taking Deaver's American Government class, I will be switching my major. I like Deaver, and he is very polite in helping you (no airs; meets with you in his Office too), but something was missing. I was bored and disinterested. What we were learning could have been taught anywhere, and in a way, through common sense (although you DEFINATELY should not assume you know the definitions for the IDs on his test). Very vigorous but not my cup of tea.

the most monotone person ever!! Tests on his opinions not what the assigned book says. Russia can have him back! Stay away from this teacher if you want to keep your sanity!
He is e very hard grader and very unclear on whet he expects from his students. BORING TOO!!
Deaver is a good teacher and his assignments are easy if you can just manage to pay attention. His tests are very hard if you don't study but you can learn alot in his class if you Pay Attention which is hard to do sometimes well most of the time.
control freak; my first D! 53 students started and 13 finished! he gave more than half of us D's or below! No way you can pass his online class with a C or better
he is kinda monotone, but he knows his stuff so well its ridiculus. his tests require more studying than ive ever had to do, but he supplies printed notes and they cover nearly everything you need to know. His class may be a little difficult, but after surviving his class you will definately have learned something.
Not clear on the assignments, the tests were all written (essays, too) and he is a very hard grader. Don't take his class.
Avoid the online class. Far too much work and you have to go to campus for tests. Toughest online class I've ever taken. Exam expectations unclear and reasons for missed points unclear. All in all, I think he expects far too much in a general ed class but I'd bet he'd be a phenomenol teacher for poly sci majors.
you don't learn****.
Teacher grades way too harshly! Avoid Online class! All exams are essay style and he grades with no explanations. I had a 4.0 b4 this class, barely managed a B with the XC! He expects way too much for a general pol.science class, he'd be great if I was a pol. sci. major. The overall class was C's and D's! Way too hard with no teacher instruction.
Deaver knows his stuff, in order to do well you must uses his defiitions to the letter and uses most of his printed notes for refrence. Attend his office hours he is much more anamated and a very funny person, his import beer label collectio can only be matched by his tie collection
HORRIBLE TEACHER! He is not easy to approach and makes you feel stupid. He grades very hard and expects you to know too much. I attended every class, took all the notes and still got a D. Don't take him, trust me and the other people on this page!
I have taken deaver for 1 2 3 and 12 he is awesome. He will help you if you dont understand the tests are real tests expect to be challenged aside from that there is almost no homework the inclass simulations are really just a reflection on the class if you try they are fun if you dont they suck dont take notes just outline his sylabus.
This Professor really knows political science, however the class is way too hard for a non-political science major. He wants you to memorize the info. and repeat his verbage word for word on his tests. Tests are hard. I had to work so hard to get a B! everyone was complaining. Don't take his class if u dont have alot of time for studying.
He is extremly difficult i went to every class took notes every day and barley got a c. he lectures all day every day its hard to stay awake, and his tests are impossible. the whole class has d's and f's its rediculouse.
psh...i dont know what everyone is complaining about... show up read his notes and put a little effort into the required essays and you can easily walk out of there with a b... i never opened my textbook- his notes- which you buy preprinted- guve you all the information you need to pass the course!
At first I didn't think I would like his class very much. But if you pay attention to his lectures and study his class is no problem. Just listen to him he tells you exactly what he wants and gives you the answers. But you better show up everyday.
This was my first college class. I read his reviews, which weren't great, but i decided to take it anyways. He is monotone and boring but if you do what he tells you and read his notes you will do fine. I got an A.
horrible teacher! would not recommend. fails more than half of his students. almost impossible to pass his class. BORRING!!! very easy to fall asleep in his class! Would NOT!!! Recommend
I've had Deaver for 3 classes and got A's in all of them. He expects his students to learn, which for some students seems to be asking too much. If you follow his instructions and use his notes as a guide when doing the assignments and studying you can not only get good grade but also learn something in the process.
this class isnt necessarily hard, but it can be tedious. the last test i took i had memorized definitons from the notes and wrote them down verbatim and i still only got a 70.5 on the test. you have to impress this guys with your knowledge of a subject, stuff that isnt in the notes. hes nice and helpful, but lectures can be very boring.GRADES HARD
I took this class at 8:00 in the morning and it was the wirst mistake i made. Everyday except test it was all lecture with a short group dicission at the end of each class. You rhink you know everything when u take his tests but when u get the back you have failed. I would not recomend him for an early class unless listen to lecturing is ure thing!
He talks a lot and it made me fall asleep a few times, but he's definitely passionate about his stuff. The tests are based only on his notes and the lectures, so if you pay attntion, its an easy A. He expects you to really learn the material and to be able to use it in comparing and contrasting governments. I learned a lot!
Deaver is passionate, and he knows his stuff. The class can be dry and long, and group discussions difficult if your group sucks. Grades like a maniac - What would be considered A-level work in one class is a C or D in this class. Be prepared to learn a very large amount of material, but it takes dedication to get better than a C or D. Overall hard
Dry like week old toast. Highly informative if you're a visual learner who feeds off of well laid out powerpoints. Logical and very organized.
At the beginning of the semester I was really excited for the class because of the subject. I got fairly good grades, but turned one assignment in a bit late and it hurt my grade, because the class is only out of 100 points. He is very informed, but really tough. He shows no empathy, found it hard to get questions answered straight.
worst teacher ever. boring boring boring. lectures are dry and teacher is monotone. he is like a robot. impossible to get an A unless you work your butt off nazi style
The class is relatively easy. However he has extremely high standards for tests. Even if you give a word for word answer from the notes he will still not give you full credit. His lectures are also somewhat bias at times.
Deaver is a University style Professor. He does have a very dry and sarcastic sense of humor which is great. If your in class and take notes you will do fine.People that struggle in his class usually miss 1 class a week. But you will learn a ton because he is very knowledgeable on the subject matter
I took Deaver for Summer School. He is extremely monotone-like Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. His grading system is EXTREMELY unclear. All of the points possible are through essays (Tests are essays-Homework are essays, etc.) Wants every answer to be word-for-word from the syllabus- one word difference and you'll get no points. Don't take!
I am at UC Davis right now, and after taking his class i am completley prepared of my international Relations class. He gives you so much information, more then I ever got in any class at sierra. His lectures and notes are highly sturcured, however he is a good teacher and I highly recomened him for Political Science and IR majors.
deaver is probably the most intelligent professor at sierra, unfortunately his teaching skills are sorely lacking. i am a 4.0 student and i struggled with the class. be prepared to work harder in his class than any other class you've taken at sierra. all assignments are pushed to the end of the course, tests are only concise essays, 1 e.c. essay.
One of the best Prof I have ever had. You have to read the question carefully if you didnt get full credit you didnt answer the question fully (they are two part questions). Class is def not for people that dont want to do read and study.
probably the smartest man ive ever met. if you love interesting lectures not a lot of homework, good jokes , not mandatory attendance and a very fun class.....DONT TAKE HIM!!!!! this was the hardest class i took.by far. im a 4.0 student..or was. and have a c- in it right now. tests are impossible. lectures are boring. lots of all nighters
Unfair grader. It is imposible to get a perfect score on any work; I dont know anyone who got a 100% on any work or exams.
I enjoyed the class. However, I suggest you take Eng1A & 1B or be a comprehensive reader. He likes creative mid-term and final projects using power-point and other types of presentations. Our group received grade: A
Deaver is a very clear teacher. This to me is the most important aspect about teaching. He does not waste time trying to make class "fun" while not informing students what they need to know on their exams, instead he lectures on material that is exactly shown on his exam. You have to work hard, but no good professor is easy.
Deaver might be a very intelligent individual and great as an in class teacher, but he should never ever teach an online class. He is horrible. Everyone in my class gets bad grades on the exams. I am 4.0 student and taking this class was very stressful and made me no longer interested in political science.
This class was horrible! Some of his lectures are not bad to listen to but the other will make you fall asleep! Its impossible to get an A on his test and he never lets you know what is going to be on them! Avoid him at all cost!
I took his class online and he is not very efficient. Take George Yount!
This is by far the worst teacher at Sierra college. Not only is he pompus and arrogant he changes his directions after deadlines. He is unclear on almost everything and his lectures are the cure to insomnia. I wish I could get the life he sucked out of me back.
I hate him he is the most monotone teacher all you can see is ihs mouth move you cant even understand him. Honestly i tried listening to his lectures, but it was useless, I didnt learn crap. He sucks at teaching and thinks its all about him, out of the total class of thirty some students, only one dude knew what the hell he was saying. DONT TAKE!!!
I am currently enrolled in his Political Science 1 class. Very monotone, almost impossible to stay focused on a lecture. I thought I atleast got a B on his first test but ended up with a C. His tests are two sentence definitons and he expects you to wow him on two sentences. Do not take this class if you expect an A. Will irriotate you like crazy.
Dr. Deaver is monotone and he expects a lot of his students. He is a very difficult professor; however, I appreciate his proficiency in the subject matter. I prefer a professor with exceptional knowledge in his/her field over a professor I can charm an A out of, especially since I'd like to do well when I transfer. Very interesting group project.
Very intelligent, but very arrogant. Almost the entire class could not get more than a C on anything. Acts like you are stupid if you don't understand the subject matter as well as he does. IMPOSSIBLE final.
At the bottom line, Professor Deaver is a well educated man who, although at times can be monotone, I personally think he is great, challenging teacher, who knows his stuff. If you follow the course pack and put in a lot of effort than you will do fine.
Professor Deaver is a very smart person. He knows his field very well. Every thing comes from power points so you need to be in class. Every point counts so don't miss anything. He grades tough so study really hard.
THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER!!!The average grade was a D. He is monotone and arrogant. He also plays favorites big time!He grades you as much as he likes you. He gave me less participation points then the guy who never came to class. Even though I did the online discussions and never missed his awful class.
Horrid. Believe me this class is beyond difficult. although this guy is smart, he acts as though we are all already polysci majors!absolutely no study guides, information or anything about the quizzes or tests. you literally have to know everything in "his" book by memory to pass. avoid at all costs. I ended up with a c, but got d's on every test.
Definately the hardest class I've had at Sierra. Clas is impossible to stay awake in... I've never worked so hard for a B in my life. I was thinking about majoring in Pol Sci before taking this class, but changed now knowing he teaches most of the Pol Sci classes at Sierra
I am a very smart person and I will maybe get away with a "C" in this class. Their are no study guides, no resources, you have no idea what to study for tests. I ended up studying everything that wasn't even on the test. He is obviously intelligent but is teaching the class as if he were the student.
I took Deavers Intro to Poly Sci class last semester. It was hands down the toughest class I have taken at college, but I got an A. There are no surprises on the tests. Just take notes on his (boring) lectures and make flash cards, because there is definitely a lot of memorization involved. The only downside is that he is super-monotone.
some people shouldnt teach. this is one of them.
I took deaver for his polisci 1 class and this is the WORST teacher i have ever had. he didnt help anyone in the class and he made no sense. there was a joke going around to see how lost we would be at the end of the class. I had to dropwithdrawl to save my GPA. Worst Teacher EVER! STAY AWAY!
My twin sons had enrolled in his class last semester. Due to all of the negative comments we had our sons work extra hard. If you take this class seriously and work hard, there is no reason that you won't do well. Both of my sons got A's. Both of my sons found Dr. Deaver to be very knowledgeable and reasonably helpful.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He knows his stuff, but he thinks he is smarter than you and likes to prove it. Tests are ridiculous. He doesn't explain exactly what he wants so I had no idea what to study. If you want an easy A, do not take this class.
Deaver is awful. He grumbles a lot and his tests have nothing to do with his "lectures". I say lectures in quotes because they consist of copying power points. He thinks he is so much smarter than everyone in the world, and it gets old really fast.
Not easy by any means. Tests are very very difficult and consist of all written essay format. Material will be boring if you have no interest in the subject. However, if you do have interest in the subject you will leave the class having learned a lot. I got a good grade because i worked my butt off but there isn't much wiggle room for error.
Took Deaver for Int'l Relations and Comparative Politics. He is dry, but he knows his stuff, and if you are planning on being a Poli Sci major, his classes are the best you can do at Sierra. Reading isn't necessary. He tests almost exclusively on his lectures. Exams are difficult, but exactly what you will see at the University level.
Professor deaver loves his career and is extremely knowledgable. Sometimes his work is all over the place. For example he jumps from one country to the next and likes to compare several countries at once. His verbal way of teaching is quite dull but for those who are seriously into politics may belong in international relations.
Deaver is a horrible teacher. His tests are incomprehensibly hard (our average test grade was an F) and even his "extra credit" is just an extra assignment that in some cases made your grade worse. He grades the essays easy at first, but then completely changes his grading style for the final. I love political science and was bored to death.
This teacher is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. The tests are semi hard but not really. I have no idea why so many people are complaining. If you take at least one hour to two studying you will get a B without a problem. I would gladly take another class from this professor.
BORING. The class was very dry and he was dull. He knew what he was talking about but half the class would be asleep 30 minutes into his lecture. The tests were ridiculous. Average grades on them were C-/D's. I wanted to take other poly sci classes but he teaches the majority of them so now i don't want to take any of them.
You could find more fun swimming in a pool of nails. I attended his class at 8-920am and was back asleep in the first 6 min. He is incredibly boring. He says aloud his power points for lectures, that is is. He killed any passion I had for Social Science. Killed it.
I understood Government, I just don't understand what the teacher wants. He doesn't write any thing helpful on the poor "test" (essays that you think you have til you see your grade) and I just feel like there is absolutely no teaching involved. Just hope you read and "get it" and even if you get it, you don't got it. Trust me. I'm an A/B stude
Took the class online and he is pretty boring in his video lectures. There is a lot of dry material and he is somewhat opinionated. There is quite a bit of reading; but, as long as you do the work, you should be able to pass.
I'm currently enrolled in this professor's International Relations class, which I was very excited to take prior to the first class, which consisted of Mr. Deaver listing every student support group on campus and giving us a handout listing the top ten attributes employers look for in potential employees. Relevancy is clearly not his thing.
I took his Political Science class last fall and really struggled to keep up. His in-class lectures consist of instructions of how to take his tests, rather than what is actually on the test. It was a difficult B- and I wouldn't recommend his class to anyone.
REGISTER FOR HIS COURSES! Excellent for Poli Sci majors, actually challenges you unlike most SC profs. An A is definitely attainable, I earned one in his Pols 3 course. The best thing about Dr. Deaver is that he teaches his courses in an unbiased way, and doesn't force his beliefs down your throat like Dr. Jackson and Prof. Sukkary do. Top 5 Profs!
I am a pretty good student but this teacher is maddeneing. His tests are ridiculous, you think you understand the material and that you are following the guidelines properly and then you get your grade back. Only class I have ever failed in my whole life and I got an A in USGov in high school.
Prof. Deaver is really nice and I like him as a person, but he has a really monotone voice and isn't too great at keeping things interesting. I feel bad not recommending him because he's a really friendly guy, but an A in his class or even a B is almost impossible.
HORRIBLE. Run for your life and that of your GPA. Does not care about his students, teaching, or the material. Absolutely useless and impossible to get a good grade.
TERRIBLE teacher, hardest, most boring class I have ever taken. Deaver is the most mono-tone, boring, teacher ever. He knows what he is talking about, but has no sense of humor or any respect for his students, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
This class is definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken. Deaver isnt the most interactive person and neither is he a good professor. I think that if you are actually looking to pursue political science, you should avoid taking this class. And if you do take it, dont bother buying the textbooks--he doesnt use them.
Very hard teacher. I did end up learning a lot, though. I got an A but I had to work my butt off. I had to take his class because it's my major but I wish I didn't have to. Deaver is very boring.
Not as tough as everyone says, but he's the most challenging I've had at Sierra. He prepares you for a 4 year (I'm at Davis) by making the student write concise and understand key processes within international relations. READ, participate, study hard, and ask questions. I earned an A by working my butt off; no reason anyone should get below a B.
Anyone who says he's a bad professor is just mad because they didn't get a good grade. Yeah, you have to work hard in his class, but thats school, and his class is the best preparation for transferring to a university. Getting an A is possible but not if you half-ass the work and not show up to class. Deaver's a good teacher, just not the easiest.
Very hard class. Deaver makes all the information needed to do well available. If you havent already i suggest taking both english 1a&b before taking terrorism. His papers are very strictly but fairly graded. Alot of studying needed. I busted my ass and got a c. I also slept through the final and he let me take it in the testing center.
I am currently taking Prof. Deavers Polisci1 class and although he is extremely knowledgable about the subject he expects his students to be just as knowledgable. I had a 4.6 GPA in high school and am stuggling like crazy in his class. He would be better suited at a university not a Jr. college
Quite honestly this teacher is not good at all. I took his online class, in 2012 but he was using lectures from 2009! When he was giving us the link to the classes they were all classes that he had video tapped from 2009. I mean HELLO!!!!! So much has changed in the world since 2009! Not to mention he is never clear on what he wants from you.
He is a very hard teacher. I had in at 9am on Friday's, his voice is very monotone, he's materials are outdated, and he expects you to magically know exactly what he wants. his class is graded out of 100pts even with 5.5 potential extra credit points at the end. do not take his classes.
He is challenging and a bit monotone but definitely but his classes are definitely doable. If you are willing to get past the dryness of his lectures, the information is really valuable. Studying for tests is a must and students should expect to actually work in this class. But he is open to questions and can be helpful
Took him online. It was really hard to get through this class. It was so incredibly boring. The tests and assignments aren't that difficult, just study and do the reading. It could've been a really interesting class, but he did nothing to make it interesting.
To start, Prof D is excellent. He is intelligent and has tons of experience in the field. Second, he's tough. Def upper division feel to it, be prepared to read, and writing well is a must to pull off an A. Advise to participate and keep up on current events.
Tough class. Not impossible to pass, just tough. Didn't do anything to make it interesting. Didn't really talk about anything current. I suggest avoiding this teacher.
Stay as far away as you can from Professor Deaver. He goes out of his way to make his class very difficult. He will only give you a reference if you get an "A" in his class. His study and lecture materials are unclear making it impossible to score a decent grade on the tests. READ THIS BEFORE YOU SIGN UP FOR HIS CLASS OR DROP NOW!
He gives you a course pack with EVERYTHING you need to get an A. He is always available via office hours and email. Not easy, but very informative and a great class. I'm at UCLA now, and so glad I took his class. THis is college, you actually have to read and study to do well. I would definitely recommend to those wanting to actually learn! Great!
I took this class online and it was a fairly easy A. No tests, no midterm, and no final. Homework answers are given so you get 100% on all homework sets guaranteed. He is the furthest thing from interactive and is not good at emailing you back. He is a TOUGH but FAIR grader. If you are lazy do not take this class because it will show in your grade.
This class was very interesting to take and I learned a lot from it. The prof rarely ever clarified or gave feedback of any kind. He got my paper mixed up with another stud and turned in a poor grade for me. Being OL I never went to office hrs and he never replied to my emails until he messed up. Grade is out of 100 pts so u must get A on all assgn
Very bad teacher!! he is very confusing.... he seems like he knows his stuff but he made everyone in the class confused. He makes you get alot of textbooks also. Every lecture is with a powerpoint that you can get online and he basically reads off the powerpoint. Basically there is no use in going to the class. He has a very monotone voice also.
It was very difficult to keep up with the class, he didn't seem to want to engage in discussions that involved opposing views. He made it very unclear about exactly what he wanted to see in assignments and essays, and left little to no comments, all of which were not helpful. Although he is very knowledgeable, I would not recommend this class.
I really hate to give a professor poor reviews, but this one I can't help. I feel professor Deaver is knowledgable on his subject but outdated in the subject. He is very confusing and unclear about what he wants. He gives assignments that are not impossible to accomplish but just vague and therefore, difficult to complete. I wouldn't recommend.
Deaver tells you how it is, never goes on a tangent, and is extremely intelligent and experienced. He is a difficult grader but prepares you for when you transfer. He's extremely helpful if you need help but this class isn't an easy A because everything is based on midterm and final.
Definitely a class for POLS Majors or students who have already taken a POLS class prior to POLS 03. Both the Midterm & Final are completely hand written. The essays are rather short which makes them more difficult since there is no room for error. Not a bad teacher, but a frustrating class for newbies.
Deaver has a lot of books assigned to the course, most of which will be supplemental readings so you don't really need to get them. His course pack and lectures are where testing materials will come from. Grades fairly strictly, so you're not going to get away with a lot of fluff.
He's not an easy prof and not an easy A. If you want to do well in his class you need to show up, pay attention, and try to understand what you're learning. His tests are hard, but because he tests to see if you're understanding the material. The man knows his government and I learned so much from him. If you want an easy A though, he's not it.
He gives power points, but the power points have no helpful information on them! Then he hands out study guides and no answers on the study guide are from his PowerPoint. And the book he assigns is confusing and difficult to read. And worst of all he is a boring talker.
I would have been more engaged within this class if there was a different professor. He is strict in grading and isnt clear on his lectures, grading policies or what he expects from you. Would NOT recommend this professor. Hes a nice person but thats irrelevant. This class is extremely hard & he is not helpful. Would suggest overlooking this class.
Professor Deaver knows a lot about the subject! He also has a lot of advice to offer for doing better on his writing assignments if you go to his office hours. He assigns lots of reading and writing assignments, but all of the research you do will give you great information if you're studying international relations. I loved this class.
Lots of research. Exams are challenging - but he provides study guides. FILL IN THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER so you don't forget information. He takes off points for missing class or being late; if you're late, ask him to mark your presence after class so you get credit. This was my favorite Political Science class, very relevant given current events.
Gave him the benefit of the doubt, but worst political science professor at Sierra College. Grading is unclear, extremely monotoneboring lectures, makes interesting subjects boring to sit through, and tests are theoretically easy, but difficult in practice. I'm typically an A & B student; this was the first political science class I got a C in.
I also was skeptical about taking his Forein Policy class after reading his reviews on here. But after taking it Spring 2015 I think student who reviewed him were a little harsh. As I did not think he was anything like his reviews were. He gives extra credit and I ended up getting a B. Find study partners and you will be fine.
Gives amazing feedback, very knowledgeable, very engaging lectures. His classes are mostly specialty topics such as "terrorism," so you should be prepared to be taking a serious political science course, not just a simple one for General Ed. He gives you a course packet that explains everything he expects, and holds you to a reasonable standard.
Interesting lectures. His class is designed to prepare you for CSU or UC, few assignments but comprehensive tests and papers. Clear instructions and fun assignments. Would take the class again, learned alot. Best Polisci professor at Sierra by far
His testing format was definitely different: 10 definitions ( make sure you answer why the term is important) and 1 "essay" per test. The 4th test I finally understood what he was looking for and got a 99%, however, he said a few times the class average was low. Try to answer the study questions in the packet. Attendance / tardiness is graded.
I never thought I would ask for homework in a class but I feel like he should assign homework. You never know what you should be studying for. TOUGH GRADER. He can be funny sometimes. I thought the class would be more interesting with the election but no.
Tries to make you sit through his classes despite this being an online class. Used old lecture videos from his in-class lecture a few years ago. Was able to skip videos and just use notes for hw. Watched a couple videos before writing papers. Teacher doesn't participate in discussions and provides close to zero feedback on papers.
Took the online class. Wasn't too hard or too easy. The book was helpful along with lecture notes, didn't watch the lecture videos. Homework came from the book and notes. Essays were graded a little hard. Discussions every week. Overall the class was good if you're even a little interested in learning about government.
Deaver is a good teacher in my opinion, but you do have to try. Make sure you follow the study guide, but also study your class notes for the test, or you will not do well. Attend class as much as you can. He will help you if you reach out. Make sure your definitions match exactly what his notes say for the test.
This Professor needs to bring enthusiasm and passion into the classroom. His lectures were very monotone and the only way I could stay awake in this class was because I had PE right before this class. There wasn't enough hw assignments and the only way to succeed on the tests is to read his mind. He also likes ducks and cake.
I was hoping to enjoy my class with him. Not the case. Has absolutely NO energy at all; hard to focus/follow because of this. Extremely tough grader. He's knowledgable, but lacks the passion to keep topics memorable. Wouldn't recommend.
Not a lot of assignments. 3 short papers and 2 exams are basically the whole grade. His lectures are really dry and extremely repetitive but I do somewhat enjoy his class. He taught in Russia for several years so is extremely knowledgeable in that area of foreign policy.
If you're taking his International Relations class, get ready to memorize every word of ever powerpoint he goes through. He goes through a power point every lecture, with extremely dense material that is not organized very well. Thankfully he does offer extra credit opportunities because he knows his students can never pass his class without them
I took him before and struggled in International Relations but once you get used to his teaching style it becomes easier. I like him, tests are hard. No quizzes. 2 essays are 1 pagers. 1 essay is 5. Have to do a book analysis. Very soft spoken but listen carefully, he's pretty funny and knows a lot about foreign policy. Book needed.
Unfortunately for Political Science majors, you can't get around taking a class with him. I wanted to enjoy his class, but he makes the material so boring. His material is really dense and hard to get through. It's such a bummer especially if you're into politics in general
Took him for an online class. Basically an easy A if you participate in discussion and do well on his quizzes, which he allows unlimited retakes for best possible score. Won't take much time at all. The final is two 1.5 page essays.
This was the hardest class I've taken at Sierra. Deaver is an extremely strict grader, and I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you're a political science major. He's a monotone lecturer, but most material comes from taking notes. Be sure to attend each class, as participation is graded.
This class was a lot different than I expected. I thought the subject would be really interesting. Unfortunately, the lectures were dry and hard to follow. Deaver is obviously very knowledgeable about his subject, but he talks to the students at a level that most haven't reached. He makes an assumption that we have prior knowledge of the subject.
For the final essay, the criteria is incredibly vague and provides very little guidance. I protested my grade and he became combative and unprofessional. I am currently pursuing the issue with the dean. Don't trust professors that don't hold students to the MLA/APA standard, it sets you up for failure and gives them an escape route.
Deaver is an amazing professor, but he expects University level work out of students at a JC and that can be shocking. He genuinely wants his students to succeed and if you participate and do the work you will pass, but if you want an A or B you'll have to work for it. If you want a real college class during your time a Sierra take his classes.
Don't take him in the morning if you can avoid it. He's the most boring lecturer in the department. He is relatively knowledgeable but he is so unenthusiastic and monotones it's hard to learn anything from him.
The class was interesting, but Deaver definitely is a very strict grader. He is very knowledgeable on the topic, and the more you get to know him, the nicer he seems. If you're having problems, go by his office hours. There were about 5 essays for the course, including the one for the final. Overall, not bad, but don't take him unless you have to.
The course material was interesting but the way the professor presented it was extremely dry and boring. The class is out of so few points that it is so hard to ace because there is no room for error.
He is a very tough grader with minimal feedback, and nearly every exam is short answer/ID question format, so you really have to understand the information to do well in his class. It's a good class if you prefer writing over multiple choice. He is really helpful during office hours though! Also has extra credit opportunities which help!
I would not recommend taking his online class he does not give introductory emails just says get this expensive textbook that cant be found anywhere else just starts posting discussions without warning and if you miss one he drops you from the class without warning if oyu can avoid his class online or in person for the sake of your sanity do it.
Prof. Dealers lectures are very dry and boring. When it comes time to take the test no matter how hard you study and prepare theres a high chance you will fail. His grading doesnt make any sense. He gives you make up assignments, dont worry tho, youll do them all any ways. I DONT recommend. Save your grade and find another professor.
Deaver's IR class was surely the hardest class I've taken yet, but I learned a lot & would take his class again b/c of how challenging & interesting it was. Tests are very difficult & require intense preparation. He certainly has an upper division teaching style, so if you're really interested in a topic or planning on going to a UC, he's great.
never again. never ever again. Lectures are very dry. and oh so so so long. He can be pompous which I don't really enjoy. It makes the communicated point fizzle a little. With all due respect, trying to learn in this class was like pulling teeth. He takes so long to get to the point. "Buhler."
In the Political Science intro course, if you received less than a 70% on any of the heavily graded quizzes, you were on probation to get dropped from the class. He grades all of his assignments incredibly heavily, if you miss class, you HAVE to do extra credit, otherwise, you will fall behind and you will get dropped.
This professor stood in front of the room the entire class with a monotone voice just talking and if you asked him a question he wouldnt answer it but just make you look stupid in front of the the class. He didnt base our grade off of anything but test which were only 10 points and he took off whole points for grammar, handwriting, etc.
His lectures were so monotone and boring, but he grades his tests (basically vocab tests) off of his "definitions" of the terms, not the textbook/google answers you may find so you have to go. He's a tough and unclear grader and the only assignments in the grade books are your tests, your 2 final essays, and your participation (attendance)
The whole class is lecture and powerpoint, do not take if this is not your major. Definitely takes up majority of time when studying for classes, flashcards are necessary. He's a hard grader and wants you to write his version of definition. Tests are definitions and significance statements (2 Sent.) and paragraph; not easy.
While I respect him and his knowledge, this class was very hard to get through. There are 100 points possible in the class and these are divided up among 10 point tests and essays. The lectures take up the entire class periods. Be ready to take lots of notes. The power points give a good outline of the material, the details needed are in lectures.
Though he is very knowledgeable, I found this class very dry. He reads straight from powerpoint and states test material come straight from them. But, outside research is needed to get a high grade on tests. The average pass rate for tests is extremely low because his expectations are unclear. Try to avoid if you like international relations :(
Deaver is a tough professor, but he prepares you for UC-level classes. The class is mostly lectures which is what you're tested on, there's a simulation project that's pretty easy, & a poster for People & Cultures day. The tests are short answer/paragraph questions, but it's easy to get the hang of his exams & ultimately succeed in the class!
Lots of lectures, dry and often more complex then necessary. Tests are fair, but the definitions he grades on more often then not do not match with the textbook. In addition, the projects done in the class seem mundane and arbitrary, specifically the simulation. Overall, while the class was necessary, Deaver is a professor I would not recommend
His lectures and powerpoints are not only intense, but you must know ALL the info on them if you want an A. His tests have 10 "ID's" where there is a word given and you must supply the definition and significance. There are also paragraph questions which you have no way to study for. His review questions don't help at all!! Find another teacher!
All tests are graded subjectively, meaning HIS opinion. A professor's role is to get the student to understand the concepts and be able to apply them logically. That is not his concern. He just wants you to be able to regurgitate what he says in lectures. But, it MUST exactly how he wants to see it. Not a good experience at all! Stay away!
Totally agree that this professor has no idea how to grade papers. On the bright side, absolutely no reading or effort is required for an A in this class provided you know how to use the CTRL+F function on your keyboard. He also provides 5 percentage points of extra credit at the end of the semester which offsets the wildly inconsistent grading.
Very subjective grader and super hard to please. Make sure you know what your'e talking about on exams, he can read through the BS. Every assignment there is no outline of what to do and he expects perfection. However, I did enjoy this class and I did learn a lot.
From the 12 pg syllabus to the un-clear, rambling style lectures, this professor was extremely hard to please and approach. So much reading assigned from the textbook but never utilized. He's looking for his terms on the quizzes:30 multiple-choice questions in 20 minutes. Expect the equivalent of a curt nod as a response to any email or question.
He is rude almost every email after a test starts with Im disappointed.... The tests are bits and pieces from his long lecture, he expects you to memorize every bit. He provides a thorough rubric but does not follow it. He teaches his opinion on government, barley used the book. He doesnt even offer feedback, only take him if you really needto
Deaver's classes may seem unapproachable but he will help you tons as long as you're willing to do well! I took American Gov't, IR, and PS8 with him and was able to get through it just fine. You have to show up for class and take time to study for tests; his exams are like the ones I have here at UCB. He really prepared me well for transfer!
He is an awful professor. I did great in the beginning of the semester but as soon as we went online the course became bad. His lectures are long and wordy and you need to try and stay awake in them. He also dumps the final essays on you the week before they are due and he grades really roughly. Don't recommend him.
Lectures are long and boring. He does give the opportunity for makeup tests and essays and thats the only reason I liked him. He was passive aggressive with his canvas announcements and hard to get in touch with.
(Online class) His classes are not an easy A & a lot of his negative reviews are people who didnt want to give a big effort. POL is my major so I didnt mind. Tests arent timed & you can take them twice, just read the lectures & do the DBs & you should be fine. Essays (2) are hard because its unclear what he wants exactly.
I took Poli 1 and 3 with Deaver. While I got A's, I had to work very hard for it, and yet I did not legitimately learn anything. He is very difficult to reason with, and suffers from textbook professor-narcissism. His lectures are painfully dull and robotic. If you have the option, don't take his class. You have no margin of error.
I am so glad I took Professor Deaver. Many reviews left here are by people who took his class for Gen Ed requirements. As a Poli Sci major I am so grateful for Deaver's class. The concepts he taught have been vital to my success during my upper-division classes. The only thing I regret was not reaching out sooner when I was confused! Very helpful!
It's smart to earn as many points as possible before the last month because the essays are graded harshly. The lectures are opinion-based and the tests are structured around those opinions, so there's no real need to read the textbook. With good memorization skills, you'll be fine, since there's little focus on critical thinking or comprehension.
Very unclear grading criteria, especially with essays. Basically expects you to read his mind. Exams are based on long confusing lectures and he gives basically zero actual instruction. Group projects are beyond confusing. Definitely recommend getting a study group together, though studying doesn't help at all. Just get one for moral support.
NONE of the readings are ever on tests. The tests are cut and paste from his lectures. He's not particularly helpful outside of class. His essay criteria are vague, and the feedback is even vaguer. He almost never provides sources on his lectures, sometimes he'll even cite Wikipedia. If you know the topic well, you'll notice many errors. Don't take
Not good. Professor expects tons of time committed to such an entry level course. Instructions are unclear and concepts are poorly explained in lectures. Professor doesn't care about well-being of students with confusing lectures and unclear guidelines. Do not take POL003 with this professor unless necessary.
His class was painful. The lectures are long and typed out, and are often difficult to read and articulate. His tests are challenging, and he's extremely vague about what he expects in essays. Getting an A is possible, but you have to work hard for it. I feel as though I learned nothing from the class, and as a polisci major, I was disappointed.
It is my last semester and I fear Intro to Terrorism will be the ONLY class to bring down my 4.0. This is the most disorganized class I have ever taken. Professor hardly communicates with students, does not link assignments to calendar, gives vague feedback, and grades harshly. I have trouble even understanding what he wants. Do not take him.
He is very unclear about his expectations on assignments. Even when I ask questions he ignores them. You have to create your own research paper topic and have it approved. I emailed him multiple ideas and asked for help or an explanation of what he wanted and his only response was that my ideas were "broad." Doesn't care about his students.
Lectures are a lot more useful than readings are. He is supperrrr nice and jokes around with students all the time, but his grading on writing is very harsh. Luckily, he does offer extra credit and makeups for tests! Without that I probably wouldnt have passed.
His IR class was something else. He didnt utilize the canvas calendar for weekly tasks, so you do have to memorize the schedule. Lectures are long and he rambles on. I never used the textbook, lectures are more important. No rubric for papers which makes it unclear. He barely responds to emails, so good luck! Only take him if you have to.
Worst Teacher Ive Ever Had! I took this class as a requirement, the class started with 16 people, when I left there was 4. The worst teacher I have ever had, It doesn't matter how many notes you take, or how many times you repetitively read the required material, I filled up two notebooks and I could never get higher than a 50%.
This professor is rough. The only way to get an A is to drop out from all your classes you currently have and pay full attention to his class, and his class ONLY. He offers no feedback on assignments, so you have to read his mind. The average on final essay was 70%, so is it the class or the professor? Barely got an A, would never take him again.
This was one of my final classes I had to take to transfer and it was rough. He does not use the canvas calendar and grades strange. For quizzes he graded on where to find the information in lectures and not the actual material. Two final essays on us and ca gov and graded extremely hard and not what the prompt explained. Do not take !!!
I enrolled in this class thinking, "How bad can he really be?" Apparently: bad. His tests assessed memorization of his slides' layout, not conceptual application. He sent out weekly emails criticizing our performance on quizzes (while providing no feedback to improve) and diverged from his own vague grading criteria on the two final essays.
A 3-unit class but needs 30 hours/week of work. Even if you followed all the "prompt" questions and requirements still do not get good grades. What does he want? He won't say. But if you don't have it, grade it down. The "mean" for state report assignment is "C", 7.2 out of 10. He is telling us the entire class is full of dump students.
Easy course but Professor Deaver offers no feedback which can be tough for some. I had a problem and needed an extension and he was accommodating. This was a 1 unit course so I imagine his other courses are much different.
Took 3 Deacer classes 1 semester about 4 years ago. He was convoluted, narcissistically makes his books course material, and he has personal definitions you need to adapt to. I have now graduated from UC Davis and did not ever again encounter such a pompous style of teaching. Made me write 1 paper 7 times to pass his class and ruined my gpa. Avoid
Gives self indulgent lectures w/ the occasional 50s dad joke thrown in to create his own special brand of hell. He seems to assign grades based on a combo of his current mood & a mysterious unknowable standard. He enjoys the sound of his voice & old news reels, his dislikes include technology, helpful feedback & passing grades. Avoid at all costs.
I definetly understand the negative reviews on here. If you're taking one of his classes as a Gen Ed requirement, then I would suggest you go with someone else. But if you're a Political Science major, it's only going to get tougher from here. He really cares about his students, and really wants to see you do well. He can be a bit of a smartass
The majority of your grade will be tests which all seem to be graded inconsitantly. If you fail the test, you have to write an essay which will be anywhere from 2-8 hours of extra work. Almost everyone I talked to had to do the essays which half the time they failed on as well. Its a lot of lectures with no homework at all.
Prof. Deaver has the worst communication of any professor I have ever had. He does not set clear expectations. It took me longer to figure out what assignments I needed to do and their requirements than it did for me to actually do them. Do not recommend.
He was one of the worst teachers I've ever had. His exams had nothing to do with what was taught to us and no one in my class passed them. I usually get good grades but I couldn't do it in his class no matter how hard I tried. He would talk a lot about his political opinions also. Never take a class from him.
this is the worst class ive ever taken. I would think it was getting interesting and then this guys profound inability to teach would crush my spirit. blood sweat tears. get ready to give everything up. most unhelpful person on the earth quite possibly. really good students in this class and he somehow gave them bad grades. avoid at all costs
textbook is not rlly necessary, Im pretty sure everything on the exams is in the lectures. he does what he calls the 'simulation' where you play class-wide dnd essentially. its confusing but not that hard once you get the hang of it. i have no idea how to get an A on an essay in this class tho so expect to get Bs and make sure your good elsewhere
Professor Deaver was not often clear in the way he was grading and often made mistakes when grading and emailing the wrong students. He is a nice person, but lacks some of the technological skills needed to operate an online class. Had I taken this class in person, I am sure his lectures and group projects will be easier to understand.
Professor Deaver has a very specific teaching style that's not for everyone. Attend lectures, use the textbook and study tools like Unstuckstudy to do well. Avoid this class if you can.
I haven't written a review yet, but it would be this class if it were for one. I transferred to a UC now, but this class was the worst. In short, the simulation is (in other words) an absolute waste of time. Very concise with email responses; you almost have to come to conclusions yourself. Use classmates to help get you through this course
There is pretty much no structure. You are given assignments, including group assignments, but given almost no instructions to complete said assignments. Assignments requiring student requests are made, but the forms where the students make those requests are not easy to find, and are posted months ahead of when the actual assignment is due.
In class groups don't have clear instruction AT ALL. They feel disorganized and unhelpful. Grading is harsh and its political science so very subjective answers. Effort wont save your grade you have to appeal to what his opinion is for a good grade. Hes nice enough but very boring and quiet.
i only took this class because it was required for my major but this was genuinely the most frustrating class i've ever taken. 5 discussion posts every week with 2 replies required and if you didn't do one he would give you a 0 and say "too bad". do NOT recommend.
Not taking again. Email responses are VERY vague. you ask a question and he answers it only halfway, leaving you guessing. Essays not bad if you read the lectures (notes not necessary). Discussion posts are annoying but manageable. Exams are hard asf, like memorizing specific lines out of his lectures hard-- don't rely on exams for your grade.
Every week there was a lot of textbook readings along with written lectures. I would have preferred recorded lectures. On top of that, there were about 5 discussion boards each week with three required posts on each. Exams were very difficult. Do the extra credit; it is why I got an A. He is very vague and provides little feedback in emails.
This professor wasn't necessarily a bad professor, but there was a lot of reading assignments and tests, along with lectures to read, and we had to write to different essays for the final. As long as you participate in the discussions, read the lectures, and attempt to apply the feedback he gives you for your final draft essays you should be fine.
Tests are complex, grading is unclear, and participation matters. You have to submit discussion boards on both halves of the week, but the professor considers Monday through Thursday the first half and Friday through Sunday the second half. He is also a harsh grader and doesn't give enough time on tests.
Impossible to get 100% on any assignment. Is not clear enough about what super specific things he wants to see in the multiple essays throughout the semester. Nothing is good enough.
Take over the summer. If you need that 1 unit requirement then he's the man to go to. You'll do like 8 discussion boards and that's really it. It was a 4 week class and we really didn't do anything else except a few 5 min assignments. The questions he ask are easy and very surface level so don't be worried about the political side of things.
The tests are outrageously tough and too long for the allotted time you're given to take them. The content feels like high-level math due to the amount of memorization and categorization required. If it's online like I had, the class is doable, but I would never take this professor in person because of how much he expects students to memorize.
His class is required at Sierra for many Poli Sci students who want to transfer to a CSU/UC. He is a tough grader and if you miss DBs your grade is going to suffer. The simulation is nearly impossible to understand, hopefully you get a good group. The final essay is extremely long (2100 words) and if you go over you are penalized. Best of luck!
Just don't take this class in person. This guy was absolutely dreadful. More than half the class dropped out by the end of the semester. This professor is completely not with the times. Grading super harsh, no feedback on tests after giving an F. Bro just so bias. Average grade in the class was an F and bro acts surprised like he ain't the problem.
You're given dense lecture slideshows that you basically have to teach yourself, and he doesn't go over the lecture in class. Attendance was mandatory, although felt useless. He will find anything to take points off on assignments, the exam averages were always 50-60% and always acted surprised. One good thing are makeup essays after exams.
Do not take this course if you are only looking to fulfill a requirement. He is so focused on his class being the most important class that any student may take. He assigns large amounts of reading each week, 4-5 weekly discussion posts, quizzes, etc. All of his test questions are phrased to make you fail, and there are two final essays required.
Only good thing about the class was the simulation. Prof made us buy a textbook which was pretty useless, doesn't review any content in class (hybrid), talks vv slow, gives unclear+low effort feedback, and is a v tough grader. Grading system SUCKS, writes confusing essay prompts, and final essay literally gave us a 100 word window (2200-2300). wtf?
One of the rudest professors i've ever taken. His tests are all .2 or .5 for 50 questions. His lectures are absolutely terrible and his feedback is rude. His own guidelines contradict himself and you will basically be trying to guess how to pass his class. Sierra college just needs to replace him at this point.
Not understanding, he makes it seem like he even enjoys scolding students. His prompts are 1-2 sentences, unclear guidelines & grades harsh w/ condescending remarks. The class is supposed to be ONL & flexible but his expectations & strict deadlines make it impossible to succeed. Avoid if u can, look at CVC website & take ONL classes at another CC.
4 exams in one semester. Not one exam study guide given. Your task is to give definition and significance for many keywords in his many written lectures for the unit. How is anyone supposed to know which keywords will be on the test? Definitely recommend doing the extra-credit essays if you get a bad score on your exam.
Professor Deaver will take an all A's student and give them a C. He will vaguely describe an assignment and then grade you strictly. He will ramble in his lectures and expect you to know that my new details of some point he made in the 47th paragraph. The best of advice I have for him to spare your grade is if he offers an extra essay write it.
