Had him as a Medical Ethics Teacher during the winter session. Glad I had done because I do not know if I can sit there and discuss all time. Was nice/funny/interesting
No Comments
Michael is an amazing teacher. He clearly knows what he is talking about, and will go to great lengths in order to make everyone understand. While his class is hard, and will make your head hurt at time, it is completely worth it. He truly cares about his students and their education- and he's hilarious to boot!
Michael Deere is an amazing teacher, even though I feel my hand is going to fall off from all the notes I take, he approaches the material in several different ways so it is impossible not to understand. He is absolutely hilarious, and i LOVE going to class. DEFF my favorite class ever!
He is the best!
Prof. Deere is a fantastic teacher! he gets his points across in layman's terms and with comedy! He will stay on a subject until everyone understands before he moves on! If anypone can make Logic seem fun, he's the person to do it! He also gives plenty of extra credit if you want to boost up your grade!
He was one of the best teachers I've had at SSC. Makes the subject very interesting and enjoyable to learn. Very funny, he definitely makes the whole class laugh. I fell in love with Medical Ethics, and made me strive to get a good grade.
cool dude
I took his weeklong Existentialism class over the summer. Absolutly amazing! He actually knows what he is talking about, and will restate a point many times, making sure everyone understands the concept. This is my second class with him, and would reccomend a class with him for anyone who wants to learn but still have fun. He's tough, but fair.
Dr Deere is easily the best professor in the Philosophy Dept. He makes sure his students really understand the material and even if you need extra help he's always willing to take extra time with you and is very approachable.
don't hesitate he's wonderful!!!!!
Easily the best professor I've ever had. He makes philosophy so accessible, and has inspired me to make it my minor. He is always available for office hours, and is always extremely helpful. Take any class you can with him! (Hi Michael, I know you check this. :-p)
Absolutely fantastic professor, who truly cares about his student's learning. I wish I could take more classes with him.
Wonderful teacher. Jokes around in class, you ned to have a sense of humor and know how to have fun learning the material. He really cares about his students and making sure they understand. He'll go over the same point multiple times until it clicks. You can't BS him, but if you go to class and take notes, no reason not to do well.
He's alright, nothing to write home about. Caters to a select group of students while appearing to be "open minded". His office is always crowded and hardly responds to emails so if your in a jam good luck getting a hold of him! He tries to be like his peers which is weird but he's an o-k guy.
The class is easy. I took medical ethics with him and there was no reason to not do well. He literally gives you the test questions the night before and then for the test he picks like 3 out of the 5 essay questions. He's kind of different but he's kind of cute. hes completely full of himself but he'll tell you that.
I loved this class. The guy teaches you as any real professor should do it. You will never hear what he thinks about any dilemma and it's very good, because his opinion my influence yours. Basically, he equips you with tools to think independently. He jokes around a lot, so be prepared.
He is my favorite professor here so far. His tests are moderately easy so long as you take notes in class. LOTS of them. Write down everything he says. It's not bad because the topics we talk about are really interesting. He speaks clearly and really likes to hear his students opinions. We got off topic A LOT :) He is REALLY funny.
MICHAEL DEERE IS THE MAN! I honestly felt like I was watching stand-up comedy most of the time, that class was hilarious. If you aren't offended at least a handful of times at what he says, then you haven't fully experienced his class. He definitely makes ethics interesting
Michael Deere is awesome! He makes class funny and interesting, and he cares about what his students have to contribute. It's refreshing to have a professor who doesn't teach intro. classes as though they are beneath him. Would definitely take him again if I had the chance.
He is the best teacher pretty much ever. Love him! Amazing man! So funny, so smart, very fun class.
This class is making me slowly but surely depressed. I thought I would do well considering that I am an A, B student but thus far I am doing horrible. I have never in my life worked my ass off for something and had HORRIBLE results. He's a really pleasant and nice guy but his grading is just beyond my comprehension. I hope my grade will improve :-(
Phl of Art, Love and sex, etc. Amazing professor. Best in the department. He is always available to students, goes out of his way to sign students into classes, and will go over the material with you until it sinks in. If you have a single elective you are wasting it by taking any other professor.
This guy is funny but hard to follow at times and I think it was too hard for an intro class. I am OK with doing the work but I think he was not really very helpful.
Literally one of the best teachers on campus. He will go out of his way to help students, which is rare from any staff at SSU. He is absolutely hilarious and you can see how passionate he is philosophy. Take his course - I promise it will be the best decision you make during your 20 years at SSU.
Amazing. If you don't do well there is something wrong with you, because his class was easily accessible and mind-blowing
He is the best prof that I have had at SSU in4 yrs. I took him for the 1 wk medethics, it now by far my fav class that I have taken at SSU. He is challenging, but if u put in the time and do the wrk youll do fine. I don't think that anyone in my section got anything less than a B. But if you don't like using your brain/thinking dont take the class.
If you take a class with Prof. Deere, expect interesting, unconventional perspectives on the material that will challenge you to think about it in ways that you otherwise wouldn't have. His pitch-black comedy is another plus.
Funniest, most interesting classs i ve ever taken. Professor is very intelligent at the same time very funny. i feel it was difficult some, and i didnt completely grasp some of the concents. He gives you many oppurtunities to do extra credit!! Again greatest professor, i didnt want the semester to end!!
Literally am so sad I only took the week long class with this guy. Best class ever, almost changed my major because of him. He's super smart and really hard to disagree with but incredibly respectful of other's opinions even when grinding them into the dirt. Goes out of his way to help you pass and also make you understand everything
Awesome professor--first class I've had with him and I want to take every other one he teaches! He is so interesting, engaging, and funny!
best teacher in the world!! the way he talks about things gets you very engaged and he's hilarious! :)
Professor Deere is hands down the most amazing professor I have ever had in my entire life. He makes each class really interesting and is hysterical. He's a great person both inside the classroom and out. He really wants people to understand the material and will help you a ton as long as you're willing to do the work. Most amazing professor ever!!
Exist with Deere is amazing. If you're taking anyone else for Phl you're wasting your credits. He's hilarious and goes above and beyond for students!!!
awesome teacher. very funny and engaging. he clearly loves what he does and wants the best for his students. not an easy class but i learnt a lot, loved it.
This guy is terrible, he said many times he does not care too if he has to fail students. All assignments are pass fail but we are never given a due date. Everything this guy says is a riddle, and half of the class is trying to figure out what he means. Good person, terrible professor.
Fantastic professor! Incredibly passionate, but also realizes that none of the stuff he teaches makes sense, so he does his best to make sure everyone is caught up. Funny as hell. Great chair of the department, too.
It is so sad to see how great his reviews are. I took his class online, and he was the worst. Showed no passion, no helpfulness no nothing. He even went MIA for a week, and never graded anything till the end of the semester. He doesn't post or discuss on the boards either. I would have gone to the chairman, but he is the chairman!
Existentialism concepts are hard to grasp and the reading is rather difficult, but Prof. Deere manages to explain everything. He ended up being one of my favorite professors that I've had. Super funny guy and he is very fair. He wants students to do their best. MAKE SURE TO PASS IN EVERY ASSIGNMENT, EVEN THE SMALLER ONES!!!
Amazing professor! Definitely the best professor I have had while being at Salem State. He makes you really think and empowers you to have confidence in why you think the things that you do. Very empowering class. Workload can be tough, but he is an amazing teacher and very passionate about what he is teaching!
I am currently taking Professor Deere and he is absolutely wonderful. He is brilliant and hilarious. You will learn so much from him, not always what you thought you would learn, but such valuable information nonetheless. He is easily one of the best professors at SSU and you would be wasting your resources by not taking him.
Great professor. Knows how to balance difficult text-based classes with the students. Is open to giving extra credit (like redoing exams), but wants you to work for it. Awesome energy and respect for the material and students. Nevertheless, you will know if the class is right for you within the first few weeks.
One of the best professors I've ever had. If you do the work and try, he'll go out of his way to help you out. Let's you redo any assignment you didn't get the grade you wanted on. He wants you to do well. He's funny and makes the subject interesting and engages you. TAKE HIS CLASS.
People are drinking the kool aid when it comes to this professor, one of the worst I've had in my 3 years at SSU. Overall our class had a terrible experience with him and while it's great that he lets you resubmit papers to bring up your grade if he explained things properly in the first place perhaps you wouldnt have too. And he's not hot. At all.
Nice guy, not the best professor. If you have to take him, you'll survive, but avoid if you can. He lets you redo any assignment, and that's probably because everyone fails them. He's incredibly harsh when it comes to grading - yet gives no explanation on what he expects. The class was fun, but the few assignments we had sucked.
This is by far the worst class I've taken in my college career. I do not recommend this teacher at all, in my experience he is very rude and will knock down your confidence a few notches if you don't understand something in the course
By far the worst professor I've had in college so far. Not sure how his rating is as high as it is. Does not give help when asked, very discouraging, VERY SASSY, too harsh of a grader. At one point people posted in the lectures complaining about his grading and he deleted all the comments. Word of advice to everyone: Just avoid him at all costs.
I was really looking forward to this class and I was so disappointed. Very confusing way of explaining topic, professor is open to having discussion but is very rude and arrogant. If you don't agree with him he shuts you down. Very slow to answer e-mailcanvas posts. This was not an enjoyable class, at all. Avoid this professor if you can.
I had him last spring and he was absolutely the best professor I ever had. I went from an F in his class to passing with an A-. He wants you to do well, and will let you resubmit anything. He wants you to learn, is super sassy and funny, and will challenge you in discussions.
Great teacher, very interesting class, great lectures!! I loved the class and he is very excellent at making sure everyone understands what's going on. Would take another class with him for sure!
This professor is extremely annoying. All he does is talk about his cats. He barely gives any homework and that's not helpful at all. When he gave an Essay Assignment of 6 Pages and he didnt even give an essay topic. He is very challenging and all for nothing. Very Confusing and not helpful whatsoever.
Terrible class. Says to try your best and there is almost no wrong answer, but if he does not agree with your answer you fail. Your opinion does not matter in this class.
He says the class is more about him seeing your interpretation of the work and there is no wrong answer yet he gives you a bad grade if he doesnt agree with your answer. He offers extra credit on certain assignments and when you do it he doesnt give you the points because you arent favored by him. All negative feedback nothing helpful
I couldn't deal or understand his teaching.... Never taking this teacher anymore.
Not worth my time..
Terrible. Once spent a good 15-20 minutes of class time flipping out on the entire class because nobody knew the answer to one of his questions. He makes rude remarks when you do attempt to answer . No homework. No notes. Does not give help when asked. Assigns a 5-7 page paper for midterm and final. Offers extra credit and then never grades it.
RUUNN MY FRIEND! By far the worse professor in this school. Prepare to read your life away, you read something to fail the assignment. I can't stress how incompetent and bland this guy is. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Anyone who has something rude to say about Professor Deere either didn't do their work or doesn't appreciate what a good professor is. This guy knows his stuff, for real. He cares that students understand the material and explains very large concepts in simplified and conventional ways. His class got me very interested in Philosophy.
He doesn't explain the material very well. He told our class he is okay with failing everyone, and maybe one person will pass the class. Even if you do all the extra credit and get perfect score on the tests. Doesn't really make notes or if he does they are bad. If you repeat what he says in class he still marks your answer wrong.
I have taken this Professor before and he is great in every class I've ever taken. This is absolutely one of the most difficult philosophy courses I've taken, but if you like philosophy it's so worth it. While the class is hard, he lets you rewrite papers and gives extra credit. The only way to do badly in his classes is if you don't put in effort.
Makes up new instructions for papers that have already been passed in, and then makes you down to half credit if you didn't follow these made up directions. Will never get back to you, no matter how many times you email. Lectures are impossible to follow, and if you have the option never take this class. He's disrespectful, doesn't care for opinons
Easy quizzes. Offer extra credit early on and let see you choose an assignment. Cares more about class dialogue and encouraging students to think ethically, than testing.
Salem State U is lucky to have him.. all around great human being.
Not helpful at all.
Not helpful at all. Doesn't really care if you have an problem related to his class.
I haven't had him as an actual professor but I used him as my tutor for the LSAT. He is full of knowledge regarding testing strategies and is always prepared to adjust to each students testing ability. I absolutely advise using him as a tutor!
Not helpful at all he asks a question and then, makes rude remarks when you do attempt to answer" Nobody must've been listening, we can sit here all day" When NOBODY answers a question is because NOBODY understands the material. HE does not give homework. No notes. Does not give help when asked just asks you to do it again. all the grades are tests
Very selective in which class he likes and which students he likes. Be prepared to expose yourself and take a few harsh critiques in front of the class, especially if you dont understand what he is saying, which is most of the time because he speaks very fast. Dont take this class unless you are really into philosophy.
This is unneccessarily one of the hardest and worst classes I've ever taken. Medical ethics is supposed to be enjoyable but he pushes his opinions onto you and if you disagree with him, he flunks you. beware!! also he doesn't offer help.
I loved my class with Professor Deere. He made the material easy to understand and always respected opinions so long as you could back them up. He is clear from the beginning about what you will need to do to receive a good grade in his class. He also gives multiple opportunities for extra credit. He is very funny and cares about students success.
Avoid Deere at all costs. Failed a large amount of the students in my class. Tough grader. Only grades are from 4 quizzes. Extremely rude and unhelpful. Worst class I have taken
The exams are online and based off of the books he assigns. Since they're online, he expects multiple paragraphs per question and make sure you use quotes from the book. If you chose to take him, he looks for participation in class, taking notes, and don't be doing other things on your laptop. What you do in class, effects your exam grade.
Deere is really knowledge in his profession, he says that he is a hard grader but I thought his grading was completely reasonable. All his tests are online open-note and you get a week to complete them and the whole semester to make corrections. He is an interesting person and his class was light on work load. Would recommend
You will like him at first, but as you finish your first exam, you will regret taking his class. I do not recommend taking him, you can probably find a better professor. He lectures all in class, so sometimes recording what he says help because he talks so fast. If you can, find a better professor and go to him as a last resort.
I have only been in this class for a few weeks now but I really like it. Very flexible and easy with grading, lectures are intriguing to listen to and the class is very discussion-heavy but it keeps us all engaged. Aside from teaching he is also a very nice guy and is fun to talk with.
Very hard exams, but all take home. tough grader, but lets you fix exams and gives you help on what to fix. Doesnt give good notes to study with but reading from the book helps. Overall, good professor. Interesting lectures, good sense of humor, and explains things thoroughly. Listens and respects all students, would recommend for medical ethics
Never take Professor Deere for an online course. He is first of all rude, he does not care for his students.. If you email him with a concern he will either 1.) not respond or 2.) give you attitude. He bases the majority of your grade on group projects, and if someone in your group doesn't do their part to his standards the whole group fails.
Ive honestly never had a professor this uneducated in my life. He is not educated in his field and is unclear in everything he says. Do yourself a favor and dont take his classes..... unless you want to fail
Most of the grade is based on group projects, which is stupid since its an online class. tough grader. also he isnt good at responding to emails and is very rude.
Where to begin. He is absolutely the worst professor I have had the displeasure of encountering. He is THE MOST pretentious professor. Expect exceptionally difficult grading, with exceptionally difficult instructions. If you have questions.. don't bother he will only confuse you more with his outrageous and far fetched explanations. DON'T TAKE!!!!!
do yourself the favor and save your money and time choose another professor. He acts very chill in the beginning, but after the 3rd week expect loads of homework and assignments. oh, and the assignments.. good luck deciphering what he is trying to say. He is the toughest and most unreasonable professor I have ever had the misfortune of encountering
It is very difficult to pass this class. I thought it would be easy because we can retake everything as much as we want, but he is a very tough grader. I have retaken the exam and still have about a 60 on it. The first time I took an exam of his I got a 7/600 and I average 80s and up for all my other classes.
I think he is immoral
So, this class was very difficult, hes a tough grader and if your struggling you need to meet with him for extra help or you wont pass. I was failing and he took the time to meet with me at the end of the semester for extra help, I ended up passing with a week left of class. He is a tough professor, but also a very nice one.
I took his medical ethics class, and it was very hard. I did not do well on his exams at all. however, he does allow you to redo all assignments as many times as you would like to get the grade you want (exams included). I had to meet with him several times to better understand the content and get the grades I wanted
The Seminar is supposed to give new students a break from the other classes they take that might be intense. However Professor Deere has made the freshman seminar into a battleground of intense multi-page articles as well as research papers and has given more homework than any of my other classes. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
You basically teach yourself in this class. He gives out a lot of papers and some are really long. Theres also discussion posts here and there. I wouldnt take him again.
Its a tough class but youll pass if you put in the time and effort. Assignments are all interesting topics. The professor lets students resubmit assignments to get a better grade. One of my favorite classes Ive taken.
He gives 75s and 80s on assignments with the only comment being "this question is wrong". This is unhelpful feedback and there is no way to fix the grade. I wish I didn't take this class (Medical Ethics, Asynchronous).
My cousin had him about ten plus years ago and raved about his humor and savvy. That version of him is GONE! I earned an A so didn't find him hard but making my grade depend on the work of others was ridiculous. Found myself carrying others and that's not fair. Also he failed to respond to emails. He was rude and condescending. Just the worst!
this course wasn't bad, I found the book online for free and sometimes it wasn't necessary to do the entire readings to answer the discussion questions. It wasn't a hard class but sometimes he would take a long time to grade or he wouldn't grade until the end of the semester. Would take again though.
Assigns exercises but doesn't grade according to the directions of the exercise. Had multiple assignments where I follow the directions to a T and he fails it and says you didn't do xyz but the assignment never asks for those things to be said! BE CAREFUL not to try and show too much understanding/effort or he fails the response for "use of AI"
horrible experience with this guy. Had the whole class email the dean to try and help us out because of his unprofessional attitude.
I took PHL 209 in Spring 2024 and it was an asynchronous course and he wasn't too bad. He graded slightly unfair in my opinion and absolutely did not accept late work. Towards the end of the semester he had some medical issues so he gave us opportunities to boost our grades.
This professor was unprofessional and aough grader. I passed all my other classes with almost complete straight As he was the only one who gave me a hard time. He accused me of using sources outside of the textbook and gave me a zero. I emailed him with a picture of where I got the quotes from in the textbook, he just did not bother to check first.
I had Dr.Deere for an asynchronous course. All of the work (discussion questions, quizzes) is directly from the textbook, so you do need to buy the book. He is a harsh grader and provides unhelpful "feedback". His tone is very condescending, and it's clear that he is not concerned with supporting his students. I don't recommend this professor.
I just had Professor Deere. He was not my favorite professor this last semester. I did not enjoy his teaching style. He doesn't seem to care about his students. Good luck. He will hunt you down for not doing the right assignments. He is not a professor you want to take it with. I almost failed his class because he accused me of plagiarism. Bad prof
This class was not terrible, but my god his feedback that he gives literally makes no sense. On at least four of my assignments he either said “incomplete or assignment does not follow the criteria.” He is unclear in everything he says and does not even give you half credit or tells you what you did wrong. Don't take this class, Stay away
He is rude and unhelpful. His grading style makes no sense. He graded assignments about 2 times in the semester, once the first month and everything else the day grades were due, but he gives zeros if we turn something in one day late. He dgaf about his job or our learning.
