Dr. D ROCKS! This was one of my favorite classes and much of it was ue to the way it was taught. Dr. Delahoyd tok what could have been deadly dull mataerial and made it fun and applicable to today. He has a great sense of humor that makes being at cl
It was Eng ???. I also took his myth class. Anywho, he's fantastic. If you feel like having a good laugh check out his personal pictures on his section of the WSU website. Hilarious. Funny guy, brilliant man.
Very good teacher - makes you think and work hard, but he's really funny and off the wall so learning is not as painful as it usually is!
Fabulous, simply fabulous prof. If you can take any of his classes, do. Severely hilarious, with incredible underlying sarcasm and insight. He'll rock your world.
I had him for two classes. He is the type of prof everyone should have at least once. Approachable, intelligent, witty, urbane, and compassionate; he loves what he teaches. A Delahoyde class is never a bad decision.
Just plain good and entertaining.
Who knew that anyone in the world could make Middle English Poetry fun! Great professor! If you go to WSU and do not take him, you are really missing out! p.s. Shakespeare who?
Dr. Delahoyde could make growing grass seem interesting. He is so entertaining and genuinely concerned for his students. I had him for a monsters class, which I thought was kind of cooky, but it turned out to be a lot of fun!
Delahoyde will get you to think deeply about things. His tests are killer, but everything else is pretty easy. He's a really fun guy, and he makes class interesting and funny. I'd highly reccommend him to anyone.
There are two kinds of people in the world, those who are in college for the grades .. and those who are here for the knowledge. If you are the later, and want a class that is entertaining, humorus, socially critical, witty, and intelligent, then this is the man for you. Youll either leave pissed off or elated, but trust me, youll want to go back.
Best prof I ever had! His tests are only hard if you're not paying attention. He's hilarious, clearly loves the material, and makes great rose cookies. What's not to like?
Best teacher ever ... makes shakespeare relevent and cool
He's wild looking. His teaching style reflects his appearance tenfold. He's very entertaining and makes Shakespeare so much easier to understand. Delahoyde rocks!
If you are interested in Shakespeare, but a little apprehensive, DEFINATELY take this class. This is basically the best professor you could ask for in this area, he is obsessed with the material, is quite funny, involves the class, and isn't too hard at all. Tests are easy if you go to class, papers can be tough, but he's more than willing to help.
The greatest teacher I ever had. Great sense of humor, highly intelligent and helpful. Crazy hair and suits. I actually remember most of what I learned in his class, even a year and a half later. A deep thinker who brings about deep thought in his students. Delahoyd, you're the man.
If you pay attention in class and talk to him about your papers & ideas, theres no reason you shouldn't get a good grade in his class. Its quite a bit of work, but it makes everything easy if you do it all. Best of all, he looks like a Shakespeare nut, which he is. Its great
Delahoyde ROCKS, he's the man no lie
I took a monsters class from him, covering the original Frankenstein, Dracula, Isle of Dr Moreau, Lost World, so on. Quality stuff. Expect to understand this material in ways you didn't think of before (aristocracy? border-steppers? dopplegangers?). Always looking to make the class laugh, knowledgeable, helps students. Take him if you can.
Hilarious teacher. Every class was entertaining.
A diverse & pleasant instructor who others should use as a model. Respectful of class, knowledgeable, entertaining, fun & quirky, genuine interest in educating students. Always prepared, great supplemental info, considerate of paper usage/recycling. Very supportive. Other than take tests & write papers for students, he couldn't do anything more.
He creates the perfect level of difficulty so that you work hard enough to be challenged and learn a lot, but not so hard that you're overly stressed. All the work you do is well rewarded with lots of helpful feedback. He's a really funny guy with genuine interest and expertise in the material. One of the best professors you ever have.
Fantastic professor, will change the way you learn and see the world. Makes texts come alive with a sharp sense of humor and a true sense of showmanship in the classroom. You will grow as a writer no matter what your current level is - if everyone had to take a class like his we'd all be better off!
Delahoyde is by far the best professor I've ever had. He's energetic, hilarious, engaging, and will easily make any class he teaches great. He's also incredibly helpful. I took two classes from him as a high school student doing running start, and he also mentored me for my senior project. A great guy, looks like Hagrid from the Potter books XP
this guy is awesome. he's super funny and smart. tests are only difficult if you didn't read the play or didn't go to lecture. always do both. the two essays were at first difficult but he's always happy to help. a lot of points are from online discussion posts and he gives exc. awesome guy.
Bad ass.
I don't know exactly what my rating will turn out to be, but I do know that Professor Delahoyde is the best teacher I've had in two years of college. He's extremely well versed in his subject and absolutely hilarious. I don't care what your major is, take a Shakespeare class from him. Papers and tests are challenging, but I still got A's.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had, homework every day, smokes in class, and smells like cheap whiskey and vomit...okay now take that and turn it into the complete opposite. Delahoyde is a rarity; fun, humorous, interesting, insightful, and because of this, his class was no sweat. Awesome professor, just read his comments.
What can I say that hasn't already been said - not much. By far the best prof I've had. Always clear, always entertaining, always a fair grader with TONS of extra credit. You will willingly learn things about stuff you don't even care about. How is that possible? Somehow Delahoyde has figured it out. Seemed a little awkward one-on-one, though.
I LOVE this professor! I recommend him to anyone who's willing to get in touch with their creative side... or watch other people do the same. I love waking up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday just knowing that I have Delahoyde's class.
Very difficult class. Grades very hard on papers as well as tests. This is supposed to be a Shakespeare class for non-english majors but is even difficult for me [and english major]. I would have rather taken 306. Only homework is 2 papers and lots of reading. You read 7 or 8 Shakespeare plays throughout the semester. I didnt have fun in this class
Dr. Delahoyde is AMAZING, and I could repeat the fabulous things said previously about him, but I would just like to add what many have failed to verbalize-- he looks like Hagrid! But having a Professor that makes you feel like you are at Hogwarts is really just a bonus to his class!
Yes, you have to read the plays and think about them to do well. Duh, it's still school. But he's funny, super nice, and full of insight. I got really sick that year and ended up in the ER several times - he let me turn in my final paper 2 weeks late and didn't deduct. Let's his class vote on the plays they want to study. Best prof I've ever had.
nice teach who is easy
Horrible teacher, he needs to actually learn that it's a 200-level class and the exams should reflect that. His exams are at about a 400-level standard. Both papers were the hardest things I ever wrote and I spent months on both of them and didn't even get an adequate grade on them. He's horrible and needs to learn how to teach. TA was cool though.
Never take this class! Exams are WAY too hard and both the papers are BS! He treats it like it's a 400 level course and it's not. He is a horrible teacher! But the TA is pretty cool.
Absolutely great. Read the texts, study his web notes, pass the course. I actually looked forward to going to this class. Best English Prof ever!!!
He made Shakespeare fun; it was a little sad that the class was so unresponsive, though. I thought that he was an easy grader on the essays, but you did actually have to study for the tests. Funny, and he looks like Hagrid!
This guy is absolutely hilarious! The class is a little on the difficult side for 200-level, though. Not terribly hard, you just have to read the texts and GO TO CLASS, as a lot of what's on the tests are from discussion. His essays are long, but pretty open-ended. He let's the class vote on what plays to read - DON'T VOTE FOR THE HISTORIES! :)
Definitely and interesting class, lots of reading and art movements to know though, most of it obscure. Delahoyde is cool... plus he looks like Hagrid so you feel like you're at Hogwarts which is just a plus.
Oh, Hagrid. He knows his Shakespeare, and while he doesn't take attendance, you NEED to be there everyday to keep up, plus there are occasional in-class assignments. He requires online work that is very easy, but do NOT try to get through this class without reading the plays.
Funny, very helpful.
Funniest professor I've had. Helped out a lot. Extremely clear and was always up for a discussion. Questions were extremely welcome. Looks like the big guy off of harry potter. He's awesome
Awesome class and professor! Attendance isn't mandatory but you should still go to class because that's when he will tell you important things to look out for on the exam. Fairly easy courseload but keep up on your reading of the plays or you'll fall behind and be confused when discussion time rolls around.
Very funny and quirky. He knows a ridiculous amount about Shakespeare. outside of the classroom he attends Shakespeare festivals etc. If you pay attention you will catch a lot of jokes or comments that most people dont. reading is significant but its possible to get by without reading everything entirely
Yes, he was difficult, but I thoroughly enjoyed the class! He let's you vote for what plays you want to read, and practically walks you through the plays, though you do want to attend class or you will not receive a good grade. Not to mention he's hilarious, but his humor is mostly Shakespeare related.
Best of WSU!
Ok before this class I dreaded the thought of being forced to read Shakespeare but the way that Professor Delahoyde teaches makes it SO much more interesting. I liked how many of the test questions had to do with class discussions. I didn't study at all for the first test and I aced it. He let my class group together for the final test. Awesome guy
Has become my fav. prof. out of 4 yrs. of schooling. Never thought I'd like Shakespeare. He's quirky, fun, a superb prof. & he encourages participation no matter what you have to say. Love his teaching. He's 1 of those I'll never forget. Best WSU has.
To add to my last rat'g: Don't get me wrong- he's NOT easy, but nor is he so difficult. He makes you thin & breaks down Shakespeare's difficult lang. & makes it fun & useful. He's also not a pushover like some, but he's also not an arrogant prof who won't listen.I wish he taught even more classes.I love learning f/him. Prof. D deserves 10 out of 5!
Delahoyde is awesome. I wish he taught more classes.Even if I wasn't interested, I'd take them. He gets you into things u never thought you'd like. Very witty, clever, funny, intelligent & great at helping us. Us students love him!!! MORE Delahoyde!!
He is very helpful, but sometimes the material is kind of confusing
The best professor I've ever had in 3 yrs. of being here. He's an amazing teacher. I'd recommend him to anyone. He's extremely helpful & very approachable.
Delahoyde seems genuinely concerned with helping his students learn. While his lectures may seem a bit unorganized, it is refresing to have a discussion-based course. However, be forewarned: he will not lead you along during discussion, and the room will be uncomfortable silent until somebody speaks up. Would definitely recommend this course!
Not a good teacher at all. Classes are so confusing, I never knew what was going on because he is SO disorganized. His tests are entirely based on obscure quotes. The class averages were extremely low. He took everything I liked about humanities out. The only reason I got a B was that the class is curved, thank god.
He never was that helpful, very disorganized, his tests were extremely hard, no matter how long you studied the only way to pass them was to memorize the plays word for word which is not something people want to do, I wouldn't recommend this class unless your major is Shakespeare.
His test are very hard but the class is pretty easy going. The test were curved so I wasn't too stressed. There is weekly homework that can really add up in the end (it's curved too). Sometimes has extra credit.
Excellent professor, all around
Awesome teacher. Best teacher you will have by far at WSU. If you don't mind Shakespeare. I just used Spark notes all semester and as long as you go to class and actually listen, you get a great grade. First test I got an A+. He is very passionate about what he teaches and has awesome discussions in class.
Dr. Delahoyde was my favorite professor of my 5 years at WSU. He made Shakespeare pretty enjoyable and was a very entertaining and funny lecturer. Aside from having to write a literary analysis paper, I didn't find his course to be that difficult. I didn't care for group activities in class, though.
This was supposed to be my easy class this semester and it sucks! The class is so hard to follow because he jumps from book to book and subject to subject and its hard to understand. He never has presentations ready and just talks from his butt. He puts his notes up online but if you weren't in class, youll have no idea what they mean. Not fun.
You're missing out if you try to rely on Sparknotes (plus, tests are about 25% quotations, and most of the quotes are fairly obscure). Easy to get an A if you just do what was assigned. Class is discussion based. Overall: great, quirky professor, my only complaint is that his Oxfordianism is a little too intense.
He is very likable and funny. He makes dry material enjoyable. Very respectful and wants you to do well in the class. encourages and values participation/ commentary in class. He is very passionate about the material. Reading material is important to understanding what he goes over in class and for homework. Online notes are helpful as study guide
He was not helpful at all, he failed 80% of my class and felt no remorse. He doesn't prepare you for exams and is an extremely hard grader.
Very positive teacher, wants you to learn and exceed. Fun class to get a boringg credit out of the way.
A Great Teacher! Very experienced in the world of Shakespeare. If I could, I would take this class again. Make sure to do the online posts! You should "read" but you can get away with doing the hw assignments using spark notes. However, you cannot pass the tests without actually reading the book!
I didn't get a straight A, but granted I am not a native english speaker and had trouble reading the assigned texts at first. He is a good teacher and his class served its purpose: - I know more Shakespeare than the average native speaker - and I no longer detest Shakespeare, yay! Can only recommend. Con: His grading was elusive(please fix)
Dr. Delahoyde loves Shakespeare, like LOVES Shakespeare. So, the class is not dull. I came in not excited about reading 500-year-old material and left wishing the class didn't have to end. Required reading is done is sections (usually an Act at a time), so that you're not overwhelmed. Participate! The tests are rough, but he grades on a curve.
Prof. Delahoyde is everything you want in a professor: funny, kind, and knows what he's talking about. He makes Shakespeare interesting, even if you've never read a word of it before. I definitely recommend taking a class from him! When you're doing the homework make sure you comment on something specific from the play to get a good score.
Best professor Ive ever had at WSU. He cares about his students and loves what he teaches. He is very fun and loves cracking jokes and using different sources to teach his students. Extremely knowledgeable in medieval, Renaissance, and Shakespeare studies. Prepare to learn!
Acts like everyone should automatically know everything about mythology. Requires you to buy 4 different books to read. Tested purely on knowing the books. (The Iliad is one of them). Hes speaks in a condescending way towards people. Doesnt even teach about actual mythology, just makes you read.
He doesnt post grades on canvas, very unclear of what he wants in an essay, there is no real syllabus. Very brief and doesnt try to explain how things are graded. Avoid this class and teacher. Im taking it as a senior for a easy a and it was not what I thought it would be.
2 exams of character identification, short answer questions and 2 essays worth 60% of grade- pay attention during lectures. 2-3 discussion board postings per week; make thoughtful analysis on something/someone specific, make connections, and cite acts correctly. You won't know your grade (he doesn't use canvas for grading). Strict with deadlines.
Delahoyde managed to make Shakespeare interesting, something many professors fail to do. As long as you show up to class, do the reading, and participate (even minorly) in discussions you're bound to get a good grade. Most of the grade is based off of your discussion posts and two small papers. As long as you do the reading the class is a breeze.
I think delahoyde is a fine professor but overall his teaching style and my learning style just did not mesh. There were a lot of times where I honestly just didnt understand what he was talking about or what his expectations are. Also the way he delivers grades makes no sense. Hes a fine prof but not my first choice.
Dr. Delahoyde has a very dry sense of humor and knows his Shakespeare. Lectures are fun and informative, but he does tend to just talk for long period of time. I wish there were more discussions between students rather than just us listening to him with the occasional question to the class. Not a bad experience though, and I don't regret taking it.
Doesn't upload Canvas grades, sends emails of your total homework points maybe ~3 times in the semester with no breakdown of what activity got what grade and the final is tough with some questions that were never/lightly touched on in class. If English is not your native language, good luck...he's passionate about what he teaches though.
There are discussion questions before every class but they are easy as long as you read the plays. He doesn't show your grades in Canvas so be prepared to not see your grades all semester. TAKE NOTES ON EVERYTHING HE MENTIONS, random points will be on tests. There are a lot of extra credit assignments but he doesn't let you make up work so be aware.
Best wizard professor I've ever had. Class is fun, I laugh every time. Super knowledgeable!
just dont
If you are looking for an easy class and taking this as a UCORE, do NOT take this class!!!! The professor is nice and goofy and I have nothing against him, but he is an INTENSE grader! I have never had this hard grading, especially in a 100 level class. He also does not post the assignments so you never know when it is due unless you look for it.
Very specific to HUM304: Delahoyde was great. His humor was a bit dry at times but still made me laugh a lot. Overall he makes a really easy class. Easy and interesting discussion posts a few times a week, midterm was crazy easy if you paid attention. You should pay attention cause the stuff is cool... except some of the music in my opinion.Take it
Will never take again. Sucker punches you with discussion posts, doesn't put a due date on them, they don't show up on Canvas and makes them due an hour before the class even starts. Doesn't accept late work. His grade depends on how much he likes you. No facts back up his markdowns; it's all based on his opinion. Worst English prof at WSU 100%.
His grading system makes no sense and is entirely subjective. You dont have access to your current grade in canvas. His lectures are all over the place and have no through line so you most of the class is confusing. He is very knowledgeable and clearly passionate and about the material but this fails to materialize in his teaching practice.
Grading is completely unjustified, gives you scores and refuses to explain himself, it's all subjective, I swear he grades based off of mood. (He's one of those profs that doesnt believe in 100% work) If you don't have to take this course then DON'T, unless you are okay with never having a clue if you'll pass or not. 0/10.
Delahoyde is a wonderful Professor. I laugh in every single one of his lectures, and if you take notes in his class and attend class regularly his classes are an easy A. There's two essays, two papers, and on average bi-weekly discussion posts. As long as you write with personality and you're engaging with the reading, he's an easy grader.
