Not very clear and talks too much.
Absolutely amazing professor. I highly recommend him to anyone, whether highly intersted in Theology or horribly repulsed by it. He is very effective and intriguing. There is a term paper and a small presentation, but he is exteremly fair and gives great reviews before exams.
Not a great teacher. Tests are so long. He freaks out when people get up to use the bathroom. A Lot of reading!
Safe yourself! Don`t take this guy. I dropped his class because he`s not a good professor. More than half the class serious failed the first test and he only curved it 6 points. Lectures on and on until the last 30 seconds of class. Everytime class was over I had a serious headache.
this guy is the worst. it was the first class i ever dropped and i thank god for that. dont take him. he doesnt even answer questions effectively
High expectations, a LOT of reading, rambles on and on about things you do not need to know. Uses huge words on his really hard tests and is strict with attendance and bathroom breaks. I wouldn't recommend him.
Lots of reading! Lectures the whole time! Tests are sometimes impossible!
Hes pretty nice, a little psycho about absences, however he is usually fair, his tests, regardless of what other people say, are EASY, he goes over EVERYTHING beforehand, however, you need to know English (not ebonics) to understand him..and he does get horribly boring. Whats with the bow-tie?
First of all, what's with the bow tie? Pretty hard professor, boring, and a little psycho. He gives you a lot of reading, but his exams are ok. Very hard to get an A, i do not recommend him to anyone at all.
don't even think about taking his class. i know u don't wanna kill yourself. he's gonna mess your gpa. im serious nononononononononononononono i worked on his class more than any others, but i got a "D"
A lot of work, but pretty cool. A real weirdo and loves to debate, but gives easy tests. If you read the material and give him something to think about you should get an A- or at least a B+. Put some real time in to your papers or he'll slay you quick!!
Very boring lectures. His tests are tricky as they are multiple choice that have the "none of the above" and "all of the above." As long as you study for the tests though, and do the 2 papers, you should do fine. He is very picky about papers though, you need to write very well in order to get an A.
good professor but you need to read sometimes. lectures are informative and the test is easy as long as you pay attention and remember stuff. nice guy, helps if you need it. i like the bowtie lol.
Very boring. you have to pay extra attention in his class. Can talk for hours. Begins class on the dot and ends past time. Nice man but soo boring. Gives a lot of work
If you're looking for an easy A, this class isn't it. But if u want to learn, you're in the right place. He's really nice. pay attn & take very good notes & u wont need the book much Also, if u dont understand something in class, ask b/c his tests are very tricky & specific. make papers interesting.
Great professor. Dempsey is one of the most knowledgable and intriguing professors at the university. His tests are moderate in difficulty, but at the end of the semester he is very fair.
just shoot yourself before deciding to take his class.
i want to strangle him with that bow tie. he is so boring wish i would have read the comments before hand.
Not an easy class. If u think religion is suppose to be fun to learn think again b4 taking this class. Gives at least 2-3 chapters a night for homework. If u don't read your lost. He gives pop-quizzes and on the test he gives hard essay questions. Starts and ends on the dot. Looking for an easy A dont take this professor wish I didnt.
OMG! He is soo boring. And his monotone voice puts you to sleep. A little too much work for a 1000C course. PLUS: No Homework just lots of READING
This man is not only boring, but he is a difficult grader as well. If you are looking for an easy A...DON'T TAKE HIM! The man is not to rational either.
Very Boring. Talks sooo much, therefor you have to write and keep up with him. Surprise quizes one 5 pg paper on basically anything you want. A lot of reading to do. He is a nice guy though and if you need help he does take the time out to help you. if you like learning about religion then take him if not Don't.

He isn't so easy but if you take good notes and come to class you'll do good. Be sure to participate and listen to the things he stresses. That'll help you alot
good professor helped me a whole lot. Have two papers, 2 exams and watch out for those surprise quizzes. He usually gives 4 per semester.
This man is such a bore... He is so into his theology he told my class to mediate with candles to aquinus. He is new professor and hard grader. Not recommended if you are sane
Ok he is not as bad as you all make him sound. If you just show up and pay attention in class you'll do fine. If you show up and goof around then you will get what you deserve.
If you are looking to boost your GPA this is so not the class for you! He's a tough grader, lots of reading from the text, assigned reading every night, very serious and just boring. Goodluck if you have to take him.
You need to take down all the stuff he teaches IN CLASS. book's irrelevant if you know the class notes and his quizzes cover class. In the papers, he has to see that you understand! the theology NOT that you agree with it. so put some effort, cuz it's obvious when you're just surfacing. i got an A in his class and liked it a lot.
i thought he was really nice..class was easy A..just take good notes..go to class and do a decent paper and you will get an A =)

Professor Dempsey was probably the best professor I had at St. John's. His passion for the topics covered was evident. I definitely recommend taking his class; it's very informative.
He was ok, if it wasnt for the students he would be really boring, make sure you take good notes because the tests are exactly off the notes. and whatever you do do not take the night class, it was horrible and he did not let you out early!!
This guys the best. Take him if u can. Intellectually brilliant. EZ if you study the study guides he always gives. But u must go to class and pay attention. Then its a breeze.
He is the worst professor ever.He doen't understand the matirial and if you ask him question he just repeats the book.He gives a lot of readings. The exams are mulityple choices and there are 2 papers.
Prof Dempsey is demanding but not riduculously hard. You must go to class and pay attention, study the notes. He explains everything clearly and he HAS been laid. He's hot, funny, and brilliant, but you have to work for it:)
Yea, very fair grader/teacher, doesn't expect you to know much, just to think.
Basically, readings can be broken down into 7 pages a day, nothing impossible. Quizzes are VERY easy, just listen to what he says. Tests are like quizzes, with an essay which is very open ended. His essays are important, only 2 two write, rest are optional or exempt you from low quiz grade. Overall, he's pretty damn good for theo 1000.
I DREADED THIS CLASS AT THE BEGINNING, BUT BY THE END I WANTED TO TAKE ANOTHER OF HIS COURSES. MY CLASS ONLY MET ONCE A WEEK; SMALL QUIZ EVERY OTHER WEEK; THEY'RE E-Z, ONE PAPER, MIDTERM & FINAL; TAKE NOTES! BE SURE TO READ THE ASSIGNMENTS, THEY WILL BE DISCUSSED IN CLASS!EVERYTHING ON THE REVIEW SHEET WILL BE ON THE TEST!
he's a sweat person he's funny and tries to make his class fun. i had him for theology and i hated it at first but its fun now! there are a couple of quizzes, a midterm, a final and 2 papers but hes a fair grader and prepares you well.! i would definitely take him again
This is a class where you have to WORK for your A. Attendence is important, as all his quizzes/midterms/final are on what is in your notes. He is a funny and caring prof, if you are a serious student and do not slack off you'll get the grade you deserve.
Take Him!!!! Gives clear notes and tests are based on those specific notes only...gives multiple choice quizzes and three take home essays...willing to help, if you ask...attendance and class participation are mandatory...wears a different bowtie every day...
material is pretty confusing but he is very helpful and will repeat things a million times until u get it if u ask him too however theres a lot of material and it can get pretty boring but its nothing against him hes a good guy
He takes attendance at the beg. of class. I was absent about 4 times and he was not happy about that. He's a pretty good teacher. If you take notes and read the book and gospels it's basically an easy class. He also likes to hear students opinions and what they think about what they've read which really helps you feel involved.
This teacher can be fun at times. In fact, he made me think about going to church again. I'm not saying you have to take him. All I'm saying is that I would recommend him and you should take him. P.S. Does anyone notice that if he grew his hair out a little more to the sides and top, he looks a lot like Mr. Lippman from Seinfeld?
loves bow-ties. enthusiastic in theology. does not allow technology use in class. 3 exams and several quizzes. assumes that everyone has a christian/catholic background. for someone who is not, youre goin to need to do lots of reading and research to understand. pay attention in class. takes lots of notes. drops lowest quiz if u do all hw.
He is a really good teacher who cares a lot about what he teaches. Makes you want to get involved. Favorite of my theology electives I had to take.
Decent guy, but if you lack a background in the subject he expects you to understand everything. Claims to speak from an educational standpoint with no bias feelings. But makes obvious what his personal ideas are. Not to understanding..
you have to work in this class to get a good grade. Make sure you do well on the quizzes (multiple choices) that he gives and also pay attention and ask questions because he loves class participation. Tests are okay (essays/multiple choices/short answers) just as long as you read your notes (take lots of good notes) and the textbooks and you will d
Do all your homework and he will drop the lowest quiz grade. Two papers and about 5 or 6 quizes. Participation is part of the grade and a must.
Prof Dempsey is the best. I highly recommend his class. He is brilliant, hot and I love the bow ties. If you put the work in you get the grade you deserve. Regular attendance is a must. A great guy.
He definately knows his stuff. He is very hard to follow sometimes because he talks very fast, but he gives you all the questions for the quizzes in the lectures and reviews before the quizzes. You need to put effort in for his tests because they can be tricky. He gives you the essay question which is great!
A brilliant professor I had no interest in Theology before, his teaching style was clear and entertaining and I took him in a 3 hour class and he kept the class's attention for the whole time & nobody dozed off. Do all the papers and score high on the quizzes and you'll do well, his lectures are quick so texting and daydreaming wont get you that A
Do not miss a class, write everything down, he doesnt allow you to use your laptops in class so get your pens ready, lectures are great gives quizzes and a THOROUGH review for midterms and Finals, I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED him he's very helpful and doesnt mind if you're not a christian he grades fair hand in all your credo papers and reflection papers.
Absolutely brilliant and inspired me to rethink my faith. Attendance is mandatory. If you're not into going to class and don't do note-taking, don't bother taking him. You get the grade you deserve. Study hard, pay attention, don't text, do the work, memorize, and you'll get that A. PS: Kind of hot, but it could just be me.
Gives a couple of quizzes. He gives you the questions beforehand. Reflection papers mandatory only if you want the lowest quiz dropped. If you don't study for quiz he offers a review before -so it's good to ask questions. He reviews before midterm and final and it's really good to pay attention. Take good notes. You don't need the textbook.
He's very self righteous so try not to make waves. Be a drone, work hard for your A. Make waves, you'll work hard for a C+ cause he'll just bump your participation down to that. Claims to be unbiased, but you can tell he's imposing his faith/opinion. The stuff he writes on the board is haphazard and unorganized, have to learn everything on your own
He's nice enough but his class is ridiculously off topic most times. I wrote down all the notes and almost none of it was on the midterm. My problem with the class is that I was not a Theology major and he went into heavy detail in class lecture and tests, which I found unnecessary and took away valuable time I needed for my other classes.
overall he is a nice guy however he is very biased and does impose his beliefs and doesn't like to be told otherwise he offers extra credit sometimes hes a good last resort teacher if theology isnt really your thing and class does get super boring
Absolutely outstanding!
Hes awesome. Very nice. Lectures are pretty straight forward. Take good notes because you're going to need it for exam. My midterm was open book and final was open book. Gives extra credit. Final paper is on whatever you want. PLEASE TAKE NOTES! TAKE HIM, TRUST!
He's a nice man, and is very into Theology in a religious sense, so I understand his thoughts are somewhat biased, but thats ok because he's very clear in his lectures. Just take good notes and read over them prior to an exam.
He is a nice guy but he is hard as hell. I studied my ass off even thought theology is nothing to do with my major. Watch out for the papers! My midterm was 91%, my final was 92% and he gave me a B- just because my paper was little bit shorter. I wouldn't recommend him unless you are a big time christian!
Do not take him if you want to boost your gpa!!
Hard. Knows everything, but hard. Mid Term, Final quizzes every other week. Interesting class to take.
I must admit that I was not looking forward to taking this class, considering I was not a religious but by the end of the class I was completely interested. He's a fair professor. Do all your textbook readings and homework. Take notes in class. There are two papers and two exams and a few quizzes. He's a great professor.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He really knows his stuff and makes theology interesting. Straight forward with assignments and sticks to the syllabus. Definitely take his class!
Overall, he's a great guy. Two papers, 5 quizzes, midterm and final. He really wants everyone to pass, so he gives answers to quizzes, and whatever's on the quizzes/tests are directly things that he's said/written on the board, so take notes. Didn't really need the textbook, you'll survive without it. He's smart, funny and always wears cool bowties
He's the best professor I have ever had.
He might seem a little hard, but seriously as long as you take notes during his lectures and keep up with the readings you'll do perfectly fine on the exams. A couple quizzes, midterm, and a final, plus two papers. Everything is pretty spread out so you'll be fine. Ask questions before the quizzes and exams he gives subtle hints.
Professor Dempsey is a great guy and has the ability to take a though subject (protestantism) and makes it somewhat interesting. Homework every week from all kinds of old writings by theologians, one midterm exam and one final exam and paper. The tests are though, you really have to keep good notes to get through, but open note which helps a lot!
I took an honors course with Professor Dempsey. He's very dedicated to what he does but he's a very difficult grader and quite the lecturer; if you're interested in theology he is a perfect teacher. Not an easy A by any means. If you enjoy going out or are already invested in other serious obligations, don't take him. He doesn't negotiate grades.
Dempsey is an awesome professor. I'm not one to be interested in theology, but his lectures were interesting and enjoyable, albeit long. As long as you come to class and take notes, you'll do fine on the exams (midterm and final).
great teacher
Its extremely important to show up for class and take notes. His quizzes are usually based on his lectures, but as long as you guys actively participate, there will be no pop-quizzes. Review notes carefully and read the corresponding chapters and you should get an easy A, if you put the work for it
Not my favorite. He is very intimidating and sometimes his lectures are confusing. But he does make you work for the grade. I would look for a better professor if I was you.
He says you need the book and you have to read to get an A but in all honesty you don't. I got an A without even opening the book. You have to go to class and take good notes on his lectures. He usually gives really good hints on what will be on the quiz and gives study guides for midterm and final. There is a final paper but it is easy.
Prof. Dempsey was not a bad teacher by any means, but there was a lot of reading and lecturing in his class. Lectures lasted the whole class and sometimes went over. He is good about answering questions, but when it comes to the two required credo papers he is not as clear as he could be, which leaves a lot to be questioned. He is a nice guy.
It isn't advisable to skip his class because he gives a lot of good notes, but if you d the reading you should probably be fine. He likes participation, so participate!! I like him a lot because he's very into theology and I'm not so it makes the class a little better. Does wear cool bowties. Has quizzes, a couple paper, and a midterm and final
You have to do 3 essays (1 page credo paper, 500 word comparison paper, and a 5 page credo paper), there are 2 tests (midterm and final), and 4-5 quizzes. His quizzes and tests are on what he lectures on. His lectures are extremely boring. I do not recommend him. he makes you work for your grade and does not offer any extra credit.
Amazing speaker. Teaches you how to critically think! If you have trouble putting your beliefs in words, he will give you many ideas. Take detailed notes because his quizzes are MC and strongly based on his lectures, so don't skip class. He gives hints at what he wants you to memorize for the quizzes/midterm/final. 3 papers. Show that you care.
Professor Dempsey is an amazing professor. He's really passionate about what he teaches. He is however a tough grader when it comes to essays. Make sure you go to class and take thorough notes. He lets you know whats important for the midterm and final so pay close attention! He does however use up all class time. Oh, and he doesn't allow laptops!
Horrible!!! I took his class for one day and I immediately wanted to jump out the window so if you're the kind of person who can't stand someone talking for three hours on end and only believes in what he says don't take him! you also can't use your laptop for notes and he wanted us to buy a book that was 100 dollars, so I immediately dropped him.
Probably one of the best theology professors I've had at SJU. Lectures for the entire class time but makes it understandable and he is so enthusiastic about what he teaches that it makes the hour and 25 minutes feel really short. He is big on participation so show up and raise your hand often. Other than that his tests and papers are fair.
He's a pretty great guy, tough grader I might say. One thing I despised about him was that he was like all the liberal snowflake professors with the occasional bashing of Donald Trump during class hours. I personally do not want to hear any references or opinions that revolve around modern politics unless it's a political class of some sorts.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! His class is nothing but 3 hours of him putting on a show! He also is not open to anyone else's opinion on any matters unless you agree with him. He also assigns papers that stress you out, because he does not give clear cut instruction on what he expects. STAY AWAY!YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!
Lectures are well done and full of content. MUST memorize things he says. Extremely closed minded and too subjective when grading papers. His grading criteria for the papers don't make much sense. He claims to be progressive but it appears he is stuck in the past.
He was a great professor who taught the subject very well. He was not a tough grader, but a fair one. If you put in the effort you will get an A. He had entertaining lectures and kept the class very engaged in the three hours. Anyone who has critized just really didn't care for the class.
This professor makes you stay the whole 3 hours of class. The notes that you take in class are just based off what he speaks about for the whole 3 hours, so if you suck at note taking do not even think about having this professor. Also, no cell phones or laptops allowed in class... all handwritten notes.
great professor! he is really into what he teaches and will go over things again if you ask him for clarification. we had 3 exams (including the final, there was no midterm) that were equally weighted and one 5 page paper. he had all the readings on the course reserve and gave us guide questions to follow along.
He was one of my favorite professors! His class time flew by and he taught with so much passion. He did reviews before every exam and quiz which was super helpful and he genuinely cares for all of his students and wants to see you succeed! Definitley take him!
Professor Dempsey is a great professor. His tests are based on lectures and he literally tells you what is you need to memorize for the exam. He is clear with his grades. He will make your work for your grade but does give great feedback on your work.
Very thorough and overall a great professor. Lectures all class, same thing every class of him just talking and writing on the board, but it's not too boring surprisingly. A few quizzes throughout the semester, 10 Q's, Multiple choice (easy). 3 essays all year, two 2-3 page papers and one 5 pager, but not hard topics and easy essays to write.
Propaganda over academia. I dared to disagree with his misrepresentation of my faith (Syrian orthodox Christianity) in one class and he gave me a B+ for it. I got a cumulative average higher than a 95 (tests, essays, quizzes and essays). What a joke. Cost me a 4.0 my freshman year, and I was a PA major. What a waste.
Does not grade fairly at all. Midterm Grades did not make sense for my classmates and I. He does not care for students and yelled at students during midterms. I do not reccomend him. He is an awful grader and just won't shut up when he should. He should be removed as a teacher at St. John's.
No homework. His lectures are extremely boring and long. Phones and laptop are not allowed so its all handwritten notes based on what he says and write on board. There were 3 quizzes (10 multiple choices), one midterm, a final, and 3 papers (one paper is five page and the other were 2 pages).
Hes an engaging professors, but talks throughout the whole lecture with no powerpoints. so if you miss class, you have to read the textbook and learn on your own. 3 papers 5 quizzes 2 tests all worth odee and he grades hard on the papers and gives like 78 questions on the tests. he reviews the tests for 10 min before class, but is that enough?
he is the absolute worst teacher you could imagine. Its a 3 hour class and all he does is talk. theres no group work, ppt or papers. its just him talking and nobody cares about theology we r forced to take this class to grad. no one actually wants to be there hes the worst.
Very harsh grader. The readings are very hard to understand and the lectures are mostly vague summaries. Be prepared to read, to be ready for papers and tests you will need info from readings. Took this class because there was supposed to be another professor that was recommended but instructor was changed at last minute.
I really enjoyed my class with Dempsey. He's really passionate about what he teaches so it makes the lecture more intriguing. He gives quizzes that are not hard that you go over beforehand (5 q), two papers (credo and comparison paper), and a final. Sounds a lot harder than it was but he's very chill and it's hard not to pass.
It's either his way or the highway. Gives you a problem about everything, from more details or write more about the topic even if there is nothing left. I think he just really does not want to give anyone an A. It's theology core class and he expects us to be masters in the subject. Way to high standards and doesn't care if he sinks your GPA.
do NOTTTTT take this class. this is the worst professor i have ever had. classes were so long and boring he talks for 3 hours straight and writes on a chalk board like its 1958. "technology free" class so u just sit there twiddling ur fingers bc obviously no one is taking this class for fun. its a requirement.
Please avoid taking his class. I wish someone told me not to take it. Talks for 3 hours straight, no PowerPoints. Hes a tough grader and his class is so boring. Hard to take notes because he doesnt stop talking and you have to write down everything he says or else youll probably fail the tests and essays. Dont. Take. Him.
Had Dr Dempsey a while back. Theology is not exciting, but he tried his best to make it exciting. He was passionate about his subject and an expert. A fair man that gave you the grade you earned. Took him two more times before leaving the school.
he makes learning theology interesting.
- quizzes - 2 papers - midterm and finals Only allowed to use pen and paper. YOU NEED TO TAKE NOTES or you will not pass. Very knowledgeable on the subject but class can be boring because of the subject matter.
Seriously the worst. Clearly does not plan beforehand and talks to no end. Grades are harsh and expect to meet narrow standards. Lectures are torture and the assignments are dreadful. Save yourself and switch to another prof.
Great professor! He does get carried away with talking throughout the lectures but he definitely knows his stuff. As long as you pay attention, listen to the lectures, and take thorough notes you'll do well.
Don't take his online theology class... journal entries due every week, homework questions due every 2-3 weeks but you have to answer 20 questions and basically write a paragraph for each it is so dreadful. Tough grader too expects you to be a pro at theology. Oh and the final is a 7-10 page paper. Terrible.
Do yourself a favor, and don't take this person's class. He treats theology as the most crucial subject in the world and wouldn't care if it brings down your GPA. He wants every work in his own style and would not give points even if you're right. He's disrespectful with his comments and critics. This guy shouldn't be a professor. He's a joke!
He's a nice guy but his lectures are so long. He will keep you there the entire time, but he does give a short break in between. You can tell religion is his passion, he loves to talk on and on about it. He doesn't give much work besides small quizzes and two papers, but those two papers are graded heavily.
I took this online, and his lectures are crucial to getting good grades on assignments. Write everything he says down! The readings are dense, and you must be able to close read. That being said, his class requires a lot of time and effort. There's no way to put minimal effort and get good marks in his class. He also answers promptly to emails.
He was passionate about what he teaches. He is funny and nice but talks a lot. He wants his students to do good and try their best. If you pay attention and write notes you will do good. Reviews notes and allows time for questions before tests and quizzes.
Assigns way too many readings, way too tough of a grader, and cares way too much about theology. Do you. Journal entries of 250+ words due every class. Just a depressing class, literally nothing positive comes from it.
He lectures the entire class so make sure you take notes. Weekly quizzes so attendance is mandatory but he asks what you want the quiz to be on and then reviews it right before. No homework so you have to do good on the exams. Overall knows how to teach but he's a very harsh grader.
