Dermody is one of the best profs at COC. Tests are essay, but he's a fair grader(you can even revise for a better grade). One research paper required, but it's pretty easy - he'll even let you turn it in late (not that you should). I HIGHLY recommend him!

Had him for two years straight and was very interesting and very clear about what he wanted from you. Gave you sample questions that would be on the tests.

He is a great teacher. knows his stuff. Dont take in the morning unless you want a blistering headache because when he talks its as if he is standing right next to you with a megaphone in your ear. otherwise, tests are really easy and its a good class.

I would definitely recommend this class. He is such an amazing teacher and class is fun. He tells history as a story and doesnt worry about dates or dumb little facts. He just wants to know what you've learned. Go to class and pay attention and you will do great. RECOMMENDED.

Mr. Dermody is very entertaining and has a great sense of humor. Fortunately, this allows him to make history enjoyable for those who would not otherwise like it. Also because he is often animated and lively, it will keep you awake in the morning. Good class. Definitely take it.

awesome teacher! harder to get an A in this class than usual, but he teaches extremely well. If you dont show up to class he might drop you. He is passionate about teaching; something extremely rare in most teachers. His tests are all essay format, but he will know if you are BSing. there is also a term paper due which you can turn in early for EC.

Took him for 101, 102. Great teacher. Just show up everyday to take the notes and you wont need the book, you can google or wikipedia the rest of the information to get the full facts. Tests are all essay exams-gives you the questions before the test. Also just one paper to turn in, which if you do early you get E.C. for. Take him hes good.

He is a very good teacher. The tests were all essay. He gives you the topic and a study sheet before each test. You must write a paper, but he is really easy on the topic. There are a couple internet exercises that are a little pointless. I would definitely recommend him. I plan on taking him for HIST 112.

Best history teacher ever!!!

I really recommend Dermody if History isnt your favorite subject! He lectures everyday but makes them very interesting and easy to understand. There are 4 tests and all are essays but he tells you exactly what to study. Dont miss class, you have to be there for lectures in order to do good on tests!

I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Dermody's class. It is pretty much straight lecture but he's got a fun personality which makes the class enjoyable. His tests are all essay tests but he's very clear about what he's expecting and what you should study. If I had the choice of taking another of his classes, I absolutely would.

Took him for both HIST 111 and 112. Awesome teacher!! 3 midterms, 1 research paper, and 1 final is what your grade is composed of. Straight lecture, but he has a passion for the toic so lectures stay interesting. Take notes from the lecture(he provides them on a projector) as well as info from the text and you will do great!!

He's a really great lecturer and is helpful with assignments and grades. That being said, the tests seemed a little too subjective as far as grading.

Just finished his History 112 class and I got an A! His class is straight up lecture, so if you want a more interactive class go somewhere else. Online quizzes and 4 essay tests including the final. I passed every single one of them, as long as you do the review before each midterm you'll pass! The questions are easy and straight forward! Take him!

I love his teaching style. he lectures but he is so passionate about history and loves his job. He is very willing to meet with you. His mid terms are all essays and they are hard to get A's on but his class is great and he is great!

Coming into this class i did not want to even show up, but in the end it turned out to be such a fun class!!! I loved it, he is a great teacher and is extremely nice! He loves what he does. He lectures, gives online quizzes, and essay exams, but he tells you exactly what could be on it! Highly Recommend.

Best professor I have ever had. He was amazing! Passionate, fun, tried to be funny which made us laugh, kind. Overall I am so thankful for Professor Dermody. He has inspired me to consider teaching history myself. Best of luck to him in the future. Take his class, you won't regret it!

Best History instructor! His class is very straight forward- online quizzes, 3 written midterms and a final and that's it. It's easy to tell in his lectures that he is passionate about history and it is definitely an enjoyable class.

Professor very passionate about history.. will go the ENTIRE class Lecturing even last few seconds. Pretty boring.. 3 Midtermss In-class essays, 1 paper, and online quizzes, 1 Final. Have to use book to remember examples for the midterms.. Dont screw up on the paper.. At least im done with history class.

Dermody is a lenient, friendly teacher who gave me a legitimate interest in history, and actually taught things worth remembering. Although his lectures tend to drag on, and he's a bit of a windbag (in the best possible sense of the word) he spices up his discussions with humor and personal stories, which helps to keep you interested and focused.

I liked Dermody. He always structured his lectures in a way that the class would understand better and be entertained. The class was also fairly easy but the book was necessary to do well in the class. He was very kind and helpful and provided help when help was needed

He has a passion for history and he shows it in his lectures. Mr. Dermody knows his history and likes to make it interesting for non history students. I would take his classes again.

Dermody is amazing!He does online quizzes (not hard, just keep taking them until you pass) and essay tests, which is nice! He's not a stickler for memorizing dates, just the relevance and IMPORTANCE of your topics. The book is needed forgetting information needed for the essay tests. He has a essay, topic is of your choosing. I would take him again

Best profesor i have ever had!!!

Prof. Dermody is an honest example of a teacher who is passionate about his work. He assigns 3-4 midterm exams a semester, all essays. Online quizzes are easy. No group projects here. Writing a fluent (detailed) essay is critical in passing his classes. He will help you out if you approach him during office hours or after class. Would recommend.

Freakin Dermody man. Loved the dude and his way of teaching. His lectures and no homework was great. There is a paper due at the end (8-10 pages long). Otherwise his tests are easy and his essays are long but nothing too difficult. If I still had history classes to take, definitely with him. Oh and super approachable and funny.

mr. dermody is a chill guy but his classes are just straight lecture. gives a lil bit of online homework but its easy. not really a tough grader but all of his tests are essay-format so just make sure you know information from both the lecture and the textbook, and be specific. one research paper assigned at the beginning of the semester. cool guy

"drop it at your next cocktail party" is one of Dermody's catchphrases. Dermody is good teacher, his class isn't really that hard, virtually the only assignments are tests and they're essay form. I would not recommend the 3 hour lecture though, even if you love history, because it gets tedious, regardless of who's teaching.

Mr. Dermody, you are the best school teacher I have ever had! I was a CSUN psychology major living in Castaic working 2 jobs after eloping in 1988 at 18. I took your class at COC in 1990 or 1991. I still speak fondly of your teachings to this day. My Dad is a retired Lockheed engineer. You taught me in your arena as well as my dear Dad always has!

I love his class. He make it fun. Read your book and be on high alert and listen to his words 85% what he say it will be in essay style test and 15% from then book. He will really help you and listen to you. Don't be rude by playing with phones or coming in class late.. Good Luck have fun. :-)

Professor Dermody has become one of my favorite professors. He is VERY knowledgeable about his craft and there is little outside class work, until the week before a midterm. You can tell he loves teaching!

While I did get really tired from how lecture heavy the class was, he wasn't bad. Just make sure to listen to what he says and write some good notes for the tests.

I really love Prof. Dermody. He's super funny and approachable, and you can tell he loves history. I took his class for 3 hours every mon, which I wouldn't recommend because it's hard to pay attention for that long, but I would take him again as a MW. All his essay were graded super fairly, both in class and take-home. Really, you should take him.

TAKE THIS CLASS, he wants his students to pass! Test every 2 weeks they're in class essay style and he gives you the topics so you can prepare ahead of time. 1 research paper 7 pages, do before the due date to get 10% extra credit. Lectures are boring but he's loud so you def won't fall asleep, he requires reading but I did just fine w/o it :)

This was my first time taking any kind of history in YEARS. I remember studying the material in this class some time in middle school, but never really cared for it. Now that I'm an adult (and with the help of Mr. Dermody's unbias lectures) I was able to see and appreciate our American history in a whole new way. Definitely recommend Mr Dermody.

So I had professor Dermody for History 101 this semester. I enjoyed it a lot tbh. 3 in class essays or midterms and one final (based on the themes of the class) and one research paper. Its my last semester at coc and Im going to miss having him. He is kinda loud, but hes a true professor and Id gladly take him again if I could.

He is very animated during his lectures, makes history interesting and kind of funny. Read along in the book as well as noting everything in his lectures. Only 4 tests with one essay of your choice about history.

So, I had professor Dermody again. but this time for History 101. We had 3 in class mid terms (third was a take home), and one research paper. Class was relatively decent. Definitely one of my favorite professors. I'll miss him.

Professor Dermody was the funniest teacher I had this semester. He doesn't just lecture on about basic history facts, he incorporates personal stories into his lectures. There is never any homework or tests, just midterms and the final. I slacked off a little towards the end of the semester and got a B instead of an A. Easy A though!

He is one of my best teacher. I have learned a lot from him.. When Professor Dermody Lectures he will paint the picture in your mind. Speaks loud and clear. Even 7 year old will learn. I will always remember establishment of 13 colonies and Class ended Mexian American War. Trust me take him. Take notes and ask questions if something is not clear.

best history professor hands down!! I learned so much without even trying! take notes and pay attention to everything you will not ever fall asleep in this class trust me and i took him at night after my 10hr shift. Do your 3 midterms and report and youll be fine.

Prof Dermody lectures everyday and his lectures are interesting, not boring. He makes pop culture references and tries to make it relatable to his students. His test are essay questions which i prefer, never failed or got a D in his essay questions. has 1 research paper, reading checks that we turn in before the test. not alot of assignments.

Professor Dermody is an excellent teacher. He made the 3 hr lecture truly interesting. He has a great personality and is an excellent storyteller. Clear grader. Make sure you read the book and attend every lecture. He will definitely know if you don't read the book when it comes to testing your knowledge. I wish I could take Easter Civ with him.

Professor Dermody is an excellent history professor. He definitely expects his students to learn new things about American history. Not a lot of homework, but there are reading checks due before each test. Easy class to pass as long as you show up and study the book and lectures.

I took him for History 111 & 112. Morning classes, his lectures will make you want to go to sleep but honestly an easy class. Recommend him, easy class, 3 exams, 1 research paper, and a final. The only homework is before the exams which is basically a study guide to prepare for the exams.

I took Dermody for both 101 and 102 and had a great experience both times. It is a very lecture heavy class, but as long as you listen and take notes his essay style exams are pretty easy. He is always willing to repeat information and answer any questions. He required a very easy research paper on a topic you pick at the end of the semester.

Professor Dermody was great, entertaining and engaging lectures that help you stay engaged in the material. Tests are primarily based on writing, but as long as you take notes during the lectures, the class is easy to pass.

Recounts history like it's an evolving story, and explains why events happened (starting points, external factors, main and supporting characters, etc.). Often it helps to make an audio recording of the lecture and play it back later while driving or running. Definitely ask questions and he'll help clarify any misunderstandings.

If I could use more adjectives I would, Michael Dermody is one of the best history teachers you will ever have! He clearly cares about what he teaches and he does his absolute best to make it entertaining. It's as if you are watching a miniature play on whatever topic he is discussing. Also is incredibly helpful in answering questions about papers.

I actually enjoyed this class. It is very lecture heavy and he goes through a lot of stuff during them so try not to miss any. The tests are essay style so make sure you go over everything necessary. I did talk with him about turning in my final essay later and he was very understanding and graded as normal. I just wish he was still doing zoom.

Professor Dermody is a fantastic history professor. His lecture-based classes are immersive and will give you new insight. Beware, there's a research paper and lots of reading for this class, and he does not provide day-by-day timelines. It's your responsibility to get everything done on time. However, if you pay attention, you will pass.

I love his lectures because he really gets into them so it makes you pay attention it almost seems like his lectures are stories. Exams are pretty easy if you prepare ahead of time. Reading checks were a pain but helped with the other work assigned. Overall, amazing professor taking another class of his before he retires because of his lecturing.

loved taking this course! professor really love his job and makes it his priority to be detailed during his lectures. there was very few homework assignments; only right before an exam. those assignments were to help prepare you for the exam, which to only answer an essay question. overall loved taking this course and would take it again!

Very caring, passionate, and helpful. The lectures are engaging and very informative. The book used is free. Not much work outside of the tests, but the tests do require a decent amount of prep work. There is a decent amount of writing, with the research paper and 4 exams which are essays. Easily one of the best teachers I have had at COC.
