Dietz is a hard teacher. His lectures are really boring unless you like learning about culture. I'm absolutely learning nothing in this class. Reading is very important in his class and if you don't read you'll be behind. But he will take the time to help you out if you are having trouble.
Mr. Dietz is not a that great of a teacher but he knows what he's talking about. He is not very clear about the expectations so you have to read the syllabus many times so you dont forget. Class is a pretty easy A if you study before the test, thats all there is to it...
Class is somewhat straight forward and not overly complicated. Teacher can be boring at times, unless you have a high interest level in what he is teaching. The class consists of mostly lecture via powerpoint presentation. Tests are reflective of your time spent studying and E.C. is widely available. Participation will make class more enjoyable.
GREAT class!!! Dr. Dietz is helpful, informed, interesting, and doesn't waste anyone's time. If you are not interested in learning, don't take this class; if you think delving into our biological ancestry sounds exciting--this is the place for you!
Great class!! Fun, interesting, and important. Get the truth and gain some insight about your family tree.
Dietz is a smart guy, but makes you feel very stupid any chance he can get. He is a little round man w/ glasses that has that demeanor that he is better than everyone else. He is just very annoying. If you let him know that you take his class seriously, then he'll be nicer to you & grade your tests a little easier. but he is HARD & NOT RECOMMENDED.
I enjoyed his anthropology class, but there was a lot of mandatory reading involved, and the tests were a bit on the harder side. I did feel like I actually learned something by the end.
Took him online. Worst teach I have ever had. I know of a few students that even had to take things to the dean regarding his class. We are in week 16, still hasnt graded our second test nor any of our discussion board posts. The college should offer a refund for this mans lack of ability to even handle an online class.
The Forensic Anthropology class was great. Professor Dietz is a take-no-shit kind of guy, and I don't blame him because 80% of the students here at COD are apathetic, lazy, kids. He was a great teacher, very knowledgeable, made my last semester before graduating worth it.
Great class, interesting material, helpful instructor.
THERE'S A FINE LINE BETWEEN CHALLENGING STUDENTS & EXPECTING TOO MUCH OF STUDENTS. EVERYONE KNOWS DEEP DOWN INSIDE THAT WE CAN ALWAYS TRY A LITTLE HARDER, HOWEVER, THERE ARE "LIMITS" THAT WE HUMANS ALL HAVE. WE ALL CAN DEDICATE MORE TIME & EFFORT INTO OUR STUDIES, ABSOLUTLY, BUT THERE'S CERTAINLY A LIMIT. WHEN THERE'S TOO MUCH, WE COLLAPSE . . .
There is a fine line between challenging a student & making them feel dumb. In his world, you're below him & he doesn't hesitate to make it known. Don't get me wrong, he is very intelligent, & knows his material BUT doesn't know how to correctly interact with other people. I find him very rude, snotty, & seems to be on a "power trip".
Of course this professor may make you think; what a surprise! Here is an opportunity to strive and learn, with the guidance of a professor who truly cares. Too bad some students don't...
I took this class with high hopes, but Prof.Dietz made me hate going. He was so rude to students, and never answered students questions, he always just asked the class their opinion, even when no one knew the answer. He definitely had his favorites in class and he would call out students for everything they did wrong. If your really into anthro, try it
ok so i had him for my first year cod i had the worst experience with him he wouldn't do anything except talking which doesn't make sense at all! and for the tests i spent one whole night to study but didn't help me at all tests are soo freaken hard i would never take him again i stopped going to the class after 3 weeks :P
Great Professor, I hated him for the first half of the class but after i started to pay attention and taking interest i loved the class and the discussions were always fun and he would always challenge the class and his students. He will offer help outside of class is what i recommend if he sees you are trying he will help you to the max !
Brilliant professor. If you have the chance, take one (or a few) of his classes. You will not be sorry.
I'm taking his online class right now. He is very bad at grading things. I'm half way through the semester and I don't know my true grade because the only thing that gets graded is the quizes, because they are done automatically. I'm very annoyed with him and he hasn't been very helpful when I have trouble opening his attachments.
I am in his INET class and i have not gotten any grades either, wondering what is going on. Only the auto tests are graded. Wondering what will happen at the end of the semester.
V.interesting & LOVED IT!In class:lecture, lab day w.lab book, tests. The same semester i took bio which overlapped some material but this class moves away from that into the semester (bones, evolution etc).V.helpful during and after class. Study and review a week before tests atleast. May curve grade at end, depends on class performance. LABs=easy pts!
I enjoyed his class, he is in no way an easy teacher, but will help you understand and appreciate anthropology.
I also took one of his net classes and most of my discussion posts weren't graded until the last minute. The way he does his point system confuses the hell out of me and it's kind of annoying since I can't really talk to him about the grade he gave me since the semester has been over for a while now.
Doesn't post grades online AT ALL the entire semester. Wants you to figure out your own grade but it takes him so long to pass things back. It takes him weeks to grade simple quizzes. Hes arrogant and rude. He gives quizzes on info that he hasn't even taught yet. His curriculum is too involved for an intro class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
he's a really cool guy and his love for anthro is apparent, but the notes he gives are poorly organized and the material on the exams is unclear. he's helpful if you actively seek him out, but otherwise you're on your own.
A lot of work, not necessarily hard. Easy class if you do the work and show up. He's very knowledgeable in his area and explains things very well.
This professor is awesome! He enjoys what he does and is willing to explain things. Do your work and you'll get a good grade. I also think he is super cute!
NEVER TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS WITH THIS GUY. There is not one single communication from this guy. He will NOT answer your email no matter how many times you send it to him. He does not grade or give any input EVER! No telling what grade you will get until well after the class is over. WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD.
Wont answer my emails, no clue what my grade is. Also his quizzes are so god damn hard you get like 30 seconds per question its ridiculous. Worst online teacher I have ever had PERIOD
Worst. Course. Ever. 12 week online course and last minute crammed with 4 additional quizzes. 20 minute limit and 19 questions, barely able to read the question before having to move one. He was unresponsive. He shouldn't be teaching online courses if he doesn't have the time for them. NIGHTMARE!!!
Like everyone said here, if you take this class online, DO NOT EXPECT ANY HELP. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. Being that said this class is VERY EASY because over 50% of the grade is from online quizzes, and guess what, GOOGLE is your friend while taking these online quizzes, because they all came from a test bank, and most likely you will find the answers!
Like the guy below have said, if you take this course online, use Google to search the questions while taking the quiz, you can easily beat the clock and answer a question every 30 seconds! He gives a minimum 15%-30% extra credit on every quiz so if you answer 90% of the answers correct that's 50% of the course grade right there! Absolutely easy A
The guy is kind of rude. His quizzes are simple and given at the beginning of class and there are no make ups. His tests are based on the quizzes. There are also many EC opportunities.
Very unorganized, NEVER POST GRADES ON BLACKBOARD, doesn't help you at all. Honestly is a nice guy, but is simply put a bad teacher. Doesn't hand back any of the assignments, or quizzes. Student have no clue what their getting in class pertaining to their grade
I honestly liked him. He was a very laidback professor and is willing to help anyone understant if you ask questions. I talked to him after class and he helped me. Class was easy, though a little boring. Book is helpful but I didn't use it and I got an A. Attendance is not mandatory will is good and he post slide shows of chapters on blackboard.
Solid Professor. He is one of those professors where if you pay attention and try to learn, you will fall in love with the subject. Though I can see where if you blow off the class, he can be a nightmare. If you have any interest in anthro at all, take him.
If you don't read in this class, then you're screwed. This includes the chapters and the additional readings. He gives quizzes on every chapter whether you learned it already in class or not. Make sure you take good notes in class and outside of class. He DOES NOT post grades on blackboard.
Professor Dietz was a very confusing professor to have and a bit frustrating. He does not post any grades on blackboard and gives chapter quizzes at the beginning of every class and THEN goes over the criteria. We took notes on the entire textbook and lectures were very boring hard to get into.
Super chill dude; very interesting class. A lot of work but worth it. Needs to wear more lilac
Literally so easy. All you have to do is write down the vocab. All open note quizzes. Posts test questions week or so before the test. Weird dude, class was boring as hell but it's an easy A
Hes a good professor in order to do good in this class you really need to pay attention and read the chapters in the book. He gives quizzes on chapters before we've actually discussed the material. He doesn't require you to be there but if you want to pass, you should show up. Overall its a pretty easy class.
His online course was the easiest course I have ever taken in my life. Even easier than my middle school courses. Reading the required text is practically optional and I finished the 8 week course in less than 3 weeks while working full time and traveling. The only thing is the professor is slow at responding to emails, posting quizzes and grading
Professor Dietz is awesome. He explains all the material clearly and gives you the questions to the exams weeks in advance. The quizzes on each chapter ask very specific questions, but you can use your notes. So be sure to read each chapter if you want an A.
This prof was incredibly rude to me all semester. He says attendance is not mandatory, but hates you if you don't show up. Told us to email him for our exam grades then didn't answer my email until the day before the final. Never posts grades on blackboard, does not care about students' success. No one should have to deal with this prof.
Overall, it was a great experience. There is a lot of textbook reading. If you don't read the chapter that's assigned, it shows. After every chapter there is a quiz. There are 3 exams and if you've done your reading and actually stayed attentive in class you should easily pass. Mr. Dietz is a great teacher and would take again.
I had signed up for this teacher late and was suppose to go Tuesdays and Thursdays. He canceled Thursday class and also said there was a quiz on Tuesday on chapter one. I took the quiz on my first day of class and he was very rude to me during the class and after he basically yelled at me for supposedly not paying attention. Never again
Doesn't grade stuff, we are halfway done with the semester and there are only quizzes up on blackboard. Vague idea of where I stand, and he does not return e-mails. Save yourself from the anxiety.
By far the most boring lectures i've ever been part of, almost no one shows up to class anymore. He talks about very random things that have nothing to do with the topic at hand, then tests you heavily on the material in the book. Gives quizzes on chapters before you even study the chapter in class. Overall a terrible experience, very dull class.
Aside from all of the reading and quizzes, he is a great teacher! If you have any questions, he'll respond to your email right away. He's also very flexible about making up quizzes as long as you're willing to talk to him. Very funny and odd, but helpful and caring. I'd take him again! Just be sure to actually read the chapters and take notes.
Worst professor I have ever had at COD he NEVER emails back and forget checking your grades online because he does not post them like a teacher should that's his job and he can't even do that. He is extremely rude and sarcastic with his students. I would never recommend this teacher to my WORST enemy literally take ANYONE else but this man.
Was an okay professor, but at the very end of the semester we had four really long labs due and all of them included skulls and bones that were only accessible during class, so it was really hard to finish it on time. He's lenient with due dates and gives a lot of extra credit. He also doesn't post grades on Blackboard until after the semester.
Very unorganized and confusing schedules. He knows his subject well and has some stories about where he's gone. If you're bad with history classes, you might not do well in this class. Reading the book is very necessary and there's a lot of reading. The quizzes were based on memorizing key terms and facts. Make sure not to miss any lectures.
He is a nice guy! His lecture was absolutely boring. He can help you out if you need any help during his office hours. 15 quizzes, 3 exams, and 1 big assignment. not easy to get A but if you read and put some effort you should be fine
you read a chapter every night, have a quiz on it and he barely goes over the chapter. does not answer emails. super monotone and a hard grader. there is no extra credit. i hate this class.
I took this as an online 8 week class. The professor did not have the class organized accordingly. 2 days before the class ended we were notified that we had to read about 10 chapters and take quizes , which was virtually impossible to complete in 2 days. When I emailed and asked for guidance there was no response. Horrible teacher.
I absolutely hate the class with a passion, that I skipped 2 days because first, he just hands out so many assignments at once and not at even go through it with us. I'm like extremely lost in this class. Anyways, if you take the class you better drop out of it the next day.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had at COD. I took his online class and it was terrible. He is very unorganized, doesn't respond to any emails, does not update your grade at all so you have no idea where you stand in the class, and posts assignments late and expects you to get them done in a short amount of time. Run from this teacher
I don't recommend this professor. He is very unorganized. He would often announce things at the last minute and do not grade things on time. My stuff from week 1 is still not graded. It's already May, ending of semester soon.
Worst college experience I've had. Professor does not answer e-mails, which left many of us in the class clueless and receiving worse grades than realistically deserved. This is important given our current situation with coronavirus. Not a timely grader, so you're never sure where you stand. Also not a super polite person to have as a professor.
This course started in person but went online due to COVID 19. He did not communicate assignments well at all. His grades were put in after the semester ended leaving the class pretty unaware. A day after the semester ended he announced that no one had turned in any of the labs?! oh shocker its because he didn't post anywhere that he assigned labs.
Worst professor I've had in college. He did not answer a single email all semester, which was necessary due to the lack of detail he provided regarding assignments. He waited until the last two weeks of the semester to post 5 new chapters-worth of discussion boards and quizzes, and waited until the last minute with everything (grading too).
Since this was a 5 week online course so it was relatively rushed. However, issues arise in that he never responds to his emails and did not keep with the schedule he gave at the beginning of the course. He even posted our exam late, without any reasoning or notification that it would be happening. I highly recommend avoiding him at all costs.
He never responds to emails. Posted the exam after the due date and did not make an announcement until we, as a class, reached out to the director of the social science department. Additionally, the book and the professor strongly push socialist agendas. So if your goal is to form your own political preferences, be wary of this class.
Absolutely AWFUL experience! This profes- no, he doesn't deserve that title- this man is INADEQUATE for educational teachings! Active for the 1st week then went MIA for the rest of the semester- no emails from him and hadn't graded ANY student's work. Several students (including me) emailed the Dean/Head of dept. several times- got no reply!
His blackboard is atrocious (weird capitalization and typos), he rarely updates the class , his web lectures are extremely laggy (easy to miss information), but most frustratingly is how he didn't respond to my email asking for help in the class. Online school is confusing enough. Last thing we need is a professor who doesn't know what to do.
TERRIBLE communicator. NEVER puts in grades. POOR directions for assignments/projects. Would give a 0 rate if possible. Choose another professor- ANY another BUT him.
Don't take his courses - especially online. Does not communicate through email and cannot call him by phone, leaving students in the dark on any questioms they may have. He does not grade a SINGLE assignment, quiz, or exam until after the semester is over, meaning you do nit your grade in the course until everything is done and over. Horrible.
The biggest problem with this class was that he left most of the chapter quizzes for the last two weeks of school. Instead of doing weekly chapter quizzes which is what most teachers do because that's only what's fair. Along with that, there were no grades put in throughout the semester for labs or exams, so you had no idea how you were doing.
Do not take it unless you want to teach yourself the course content. He will not answer your questions properly. He will not grade nearly anything until the end of the semester. And he will not respond outside of class. Unless you want to pay to teach yourself, don't do it.
Arguably the worst professor I've ever had. Does not post or grade assignments on time despite numerous attempts to communicate via email. At the time of writing the professor has randomly uploaded over 20 assignments to be completed and the school year ends this Friday. Of course these assignments came without warning as well. Overall terrible.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Didn't grade a SINGLE assignment until almost a week after the course was completed. Never responds to emails (which is especially challenging in a fully online course). When I asked questions in class, I was met with very rude responses. Would give a 0 if I could. Avoid him at all costs.
After seeing some of the other reviews I was slightly hesitant of taking this course with him. However, after taking this course I actually appreciate him! Yes he doesn't really answer emails or grade right away, but he is a solid dude. He will help if you ask him. There are quizzes after every chapter and exams were take home (hybrid class).
It takes so long for him to grade assignments, I don't what my grade is and the semester is over. He is terrible at getting back to you through email. If you need help reach out to him in person or else you won't be able to reach him. Be ready to teach yourself all of the material and make sure to read the book.
He was good and let us turn things in late and his lectures were good. He's pretty funny and open to conversation. It is a lot of work, I won't lie but try not to push the work off more than a day or two because it will pile quickly and he won't really remind you.
He's a good dude personally but not a very good teacher. Take him if you must he's not that bad but a VERY late grader, hasn't graded any exams for me yet and the semester if over. Doesn't remind you about quizzes and homework very often and hard to reach too/email. Lectures weren't too boring. But again extra emphasis on late grader!
RUN THE OTHER WAY! No manual grade for any exam was posted until after the semester was over. Two manual exam grades were posted by 12/25, as of 12/27 the course is deleted on blackboard and I ended up with a D which is impossible. Didn't post a course schedule after I reminded him at least 3 times, and he never responded to a single email I sent.
Wondering if he wrote those good reviews himself because this guy is anything but caring or hilarious. A lot of bad reviews must've been taken down so beware he is WORSE than you think. Didn't follow his schedule at all and it resulted in many students getting bad grades. I only got an A because I taught myself well. Michael, do better.
Was not worth showing up to class because all he does is read off the slides. There are 3 take-home exams and weekly quizzes, and an end-of-semester journal project all fairly easy as long as you turn in everything. He will not grade anything until the last day of the semester.
Don't recommend this teacher at all! A lot of lecturing and a lot of reading from the textbook! Also had test question that don't go in on what was taught and it was really hard to understand and comprehend.
I took a class with Dietz in 2020 and did not enjoy it. Lectures was just him reading off slides, there was homework, take home tests, and a journal project where you interview a partner. He never answers his emails so you are in limbo if you have a question or need help. Tests and quizzes were short answer questions and are tricky. Hard class.
Every time I am in class my only thoughts are, "What are we talking about...?", "Why are we talking about this...?" and "What does this have to do with Anthropology...". If that doesn't tell you anything about this professor then I don't know what to tell you. You can honestly skip every class, read the notes online instead and you will learn more.
This dude is great as a person and anthropologist. I can tell that he knows a lot about the subject, but he's awful at teaching it. I'm taking it in person, but he treats it like an online class. I don't know how I did on any assignments so far and we're halfway through the semester. Most of my graded "assignments" are just in class participation.
Very terrible teacher.
he's a cool guy but don't take this class unless you like A LOT of work
This was an online course and he posted one announcement at the beginning of class saying he was going to post due dates for assignments soon. He didn't do that until the last 2 weeks of class and had to give us an extra week to do assignments because of this. He barely responded to emails. I don't know how he was able to get away with this.
Wouldn't take him again! I don't recommend him. Everything is way too hard especially if it comes to grading.
I wish I had checked this site before signing up for this anthropology class over the summer. Never have I ever had so much work for an introductory class, with such minimal communication or support from a professor. The course ends in two weeks, and I have had no assignments graded yet.
Only take if you want to spend 20+ hours a week doing readings and several quizzes a week. Was an online class, but still had partner work, which is ridiculous. Could never find a partner, even after emailing everyone in the class. Had to email him several times to actually upload his assignments so I could complete them on time.
I wish I looked at this before taking this class. He rarely puts up the tests on time, so many assignments (like two classes in one) and partner work. Also does not open emails. The projects are tedious, and I am writing this on a day where he has yet again not made a dropbox available for this assignment. It is 11:30 PM
flat out the worst teacher i have ever had
Avoid at all costs. I had him online for Cultural Anthropology last year; he didn't grade anything until the last minute, and he also never posted the modules for students to submit assignments. He was also very slow to respond to emails, I had to track him down in person to ask him about finding a partner for a project. Just don't take his class.
Many people dropped this class because he was unreachable outside of class, did not give clear instructions or outlines and the worst part was that he graded at a minimum a month late, so I didn't even get my final grade until my summer classes had started. He is political (Dem.) but it is mostly/sometimes relevant to the material.
Genuinely infuriating. I participated the most out of everyone in our small class. I took rigorous and detailed notes. I organized a study group and we met for hours after class to finish the convoluted and byzantine lab assignments that were only tangentially related to our textbook and lectures. Worst professor OAT. Also, he is a coke addict.
Very unclear on expectations. Prepare to read all assigned material thoroughly and review through the semester because he rarely references the text or lab book in class. Leaves grading for the end of the semester and often posts assignments late, leaving little time to work or review feedback. Form a study group early bc he will not help you
Professor goes MIA. Is not accessible outside of class – never returns emails. Constantly forgets to post assignments, quizzes, and midterms/finals. No lectures. Read the chapter, take the quiz, and post in the discussion boards. Made cultural anthropology boring. Essay assignments and group projects are fun, though.
Mr. Dietz, is not an ideal professor for an online class. He is never available, doesn't reply to emails. He posts assignments very late, and makes random changes in the syllabus throughout the course. He grades at the end which means you cannot improve your work to get a better grade.
Impossible to get ahold of through email, blackboard, etc. Consistently posted assignments late, and literally didn't grade all of my assignments. I still don't know how I did on some of them even though he had plenty of time to grade. Got the A, but it was incredibly stressful. Made an easy/interesting class difficult and frustrating.
Holy cow is this professor so…difficult. He's difficult to reach, doesn't teach very well, and is never available through email (to me at least, I don't know about the other students in the class) . I was considering dropping the class all throughout the semester, but decided to stick it out, and see if anything might change. And nothing did.
in terms of understanding the basics of anthropology i think he was pretty accessible but hes gen impossible to reach outside of class and a lot of my assignments aren't even graded. scatterbrained and his lectures didn't always cover everything we needed to know for the tests, for which you need to take very rigorous notes from textbook.
