Extremely hard tests. I was pretty good at calculus before I ttok this class and this class beat me down. He was good at explaining, but the tests we very high standards to what level of concepts were taught. Very time consuming-It weighed my other classes down. Very nice teacher and helpful, just very high expectations.
The class is hard, but the tests are the same for all Math 112 students, so they're really hard. How well you do in this class depends on which professor you have, and how well you understand them and the concepts.
nice teacher, he is easy with his students he tries to explain everything in class but he wastes lots of time telling stories that are barely related and doing some problems from the HW. 4 exams and final HW every time you have a lecture and pre-class quizes. if you love claculus you can handle this class
hes really good, fun, gives good tips for the midterms seeing how he writes them.
Dorff is a good professor. I thought his lectures could have focused more on actual problems and less on definitions & proofs, but they were okay overall. He is very interested in student success and his office hour is great.
he is a cool teacher. He tries to solve most of the problems for students. He is very interested in teaching.
This guy is amazing. He is funny and an excellent professor. Its because of him I've grown to really love math. he has a lot of office hours to provide help, and you can tell he definitely wants everyone to succeed. I really appreciate how much effort he puts into trying to help his students.. i wish i could take him for all my math classes at BYU!
Prof Dorff is a nice guy, and has fun classes, BUT he spends way too much time reviewing homework and talking about his teaching style. He spends at least 10 minutes per class talking about how he likes to teach. He once spent the entire class period on one homework problem form the day before. I learned everything from the book, not him.
A very nice guy. Tries to keep the Math Department from making the Midterms too hard. Willing to help and really tries to use class time wisely to benefit the most students. Has a good sense of humor. Highly recommend this teacher.
He wants his student to suceed. I thought he was pretty good. Tried to make it fun.
Dorff is a cool guy. He can get a little off topic on odd analogies, but he always gets through the lecture. Whatever isnt clear in lecture is cleared up in lab, so that's good. Tests are fair and Dorff does plenty of review to get you ready. He wants you to succeed.
Prof Dorff is a good professor to take a class from. His explanations are usually pretty good. If you go to class/labs, you should be fine. The biggest thing is that he wants you to succeed and is fair in his test, assignments, etc. I'd take a class from him again.
Dr. Dorff really cares about his students success. The tests are the same for the entire department. Dr. DOrff did well preparing us for the tests. While his sense of humor is kind of nerdy, he's a great guy and offers really clear explanations.
I took this class Fall 2010. Brother Dorff cares that his students do well. Like all math classes, one of the best teaching tools is repetition and Brother Dorff relies extremely heavily on it. His homework is half online, half bookwork meaning that you have homework due 6 days a week. This is not fun at all, but I think it actually helped.
His lectures were always entertaining and very helpful. He was great with helping us prepare for the tests. He really wanted his students to do well. He couldn't control the tests because they were departmental, but I got the feeling that they would have been easier if he had written them.
Professor Dorff is probably the best math teacher I have had. He honestly cares about your success and prepares you well for the exams. If you do your homework then you will do fine in the class, just like any math class you have to practice a lot. I strongly recommend professor Dorff, he explains things very clearly and teaches very well.
Fantastic professor! He loves math and gives great lectures! Make sure to attend as many review sessions before exams as possible. He love Christmas and is just a very happy and fun guy to be around!
Excellent help! Best professor I've ever had. Provided plenty of times for help and cared about our well being.
Math Seminar is definitely the best class to take if you need .5 credits. Class is mandatory, but it's only an hour a week. You have to do 3 super easy assignments over the semester, and in total it took me like 3 hours to do them. Plus you get food before every class, and you have to option to go to dinner after with the speakers. FREE FOOD PEOPLE
He is a good teacher. Really cares about his students. I learn better by reading the book and from YouTube, so I quickly stopped attending class. Anyways, I didn't like how homework was worth 30% of the grade and how they grade it pretty hard. Sometimes I coudn't make it to school just to turn it in. I live almost 40 minutes away too. NO late work.
Coach Dorff is the greatest! He cares about his students so much. He reads our emails and gives feedback. He even offers some extra credit! He'll give life advice and his lectures are overall pretty entertaining. He doesn't always get through everything in lecture, but he posts his notes online. His class's averages on tests are usually 10$ better!
Coach Dorff (that's what he has us call him) is AMAZING! One of the best math teachers I ever had. (So good I took Calc 1 and 2 from him!) He cares about his students and their success. If you want to do well in the class, you will. He loves math and by the end of your class with him, you will love it too.
Dr. Dorff is fantastic. If you have to take calculus, he is the one to take it from. I really don't like math, but he explained things carefully, he cares about the students, he was very fair, and it didn't feel so dry with him teaching. Fun professor, even though it's calculus.
He is a great guy. He actually cares about the students. He was wiling to sacrifice his time to rewrite the department assignments to make them clearer and more useful to us. His explanations are really clear, and he tries to make Calculus as fun as it can be.
Coach Dorff, as he likes to be called, was an awesome teacher. He's the best in the department, in my opinion, and really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. My TA was also good and answered our questions and helped with our homework. The tests weren't too bad as long as you studied, and he even gives EC opportunities.
Coach Dorff rocks! He's highly invested in the success of his students, and he works hard to make sure you understand the more difficult concepts. Nice, funny, and reasonable in terms of work load and difficulty level. Having taken this class from him, I feel more than adequately prepared to advance in my mathematics education.
Coach Dorff is a great teacher! He cares about his students and is willing to alter the class in order to best meet the needs of the students! He goes out of his way to provide review sessions and materials before tests! The class is hard, but he prepares you very well for the tests (which are departmental). If you can, take from Dorff!
Dr. Dorff was an exceptional teacher, with a wonderful personality and great experience working in the math field.
Dr. Dorff is an exceptional teacher with a great personality.
"Coach Dorff," as he insists you call him, is a great professor who not only teaches calculus but life lessons as well. He teaches with clarity, offers his notes online, and is quick to respond to any and all emails sent his way. Students, especially freshmen, should consider taking his class if Calculus 1 is required for their major
Dorff is the best math teacher I have ever had. he teaches clearly, gives many examples, and posts his notes online with all the info needed to do the homework, even if there wasn't time to cover it in class. He is funny, entertaining, and gives life lessons in class. genuinely cares about the students and does all he can to help them succeed.
Dorff is the best math teacher I have ever had. he teaches clearly, gives many examples, and posts his notes online with all the info needed to do the homework, even if there wasn't time to cover it in class. He is funny, entertaining, and gives life lessons in class.
Professor Dorff did more to help his students pass this relatively difficult class than any professor I have ever had. He always wants to help out, his lectures are very helpful, and he is a very good teacher. He helps you prepare for tests really well.
Coach Dorff is seriously the best Math professorteacher I have had in my life! He does literally everything he can for you to do well. He reviews every day in class a week before the tests, does his own reviews outside of class, posts his notes online and makes class fun. He loves Christmas and math. He teaches very simple. Best choice there is!
Dr. Dorff is a great teacher. The classes he teaches are never going to be easy, but he puts a lot of effort to help the students out and to answer questions. For our final exam, he even took time to make a study guide for the class with the answers to the questions on the last page. Dr. Dorff is the your best bet for a difficult math class!
Coach Dorff is AWESOME!! His lectures are so clear, he is hilarious, and does everything he can to help you do well in his class. As long as you put in a little work, tests are easy to get As on. This class does come with a lot of homework, but it's a four credit class so that's expected. Show up to class, go to your labs, and you will do well:)
Professor Dorff posts past exams on Moodle for students to go over and study from and hosts exam reviews. You can receive up to 18 points of extra credit. His average exam scores were consistently higher than other professors. Each homework set is composed of online work and textbook problems. Attend math lab exam reviews and get a good TA.
I love Coach Dorff!! He's so awesome; if you have to take 112 take it from him! He's great at explaining all the concepts and really cares about his student's success. Before every test he would take time out of his schedule to put on review sessions. They were a life saver, and were way better than the ones the math lab held.
I absolutely loved Coach Dorff!! Although, he is majorly into Christmas, so you will have to sit through Christmas jokes, songs, and countdowns all year round. That being said, he really makes math fun! He truly tries to be fair and helpful and he is always always available to help you out. Super approachable and just an awesome teacher.
Coach Dorff is a phenomenal Calculus teacher! I would take this class again just to have him. He is hilarious, inspirational, and just a great guy in general. He knows just about everything that there is to know about calculus, and he really cares about his students and does whatever he can to help them throughout the semester. Best teacher ever!
"Coach" Dorff was a phenomenal professor. His lectures were very well organized. Many times he helped me with the homework after lecture. Math 112 is not easy (even though I got a 5 on the AP Calculus AB test before taking this class), but it will be challenging regardless of your professor. Coach Dorff is the way to go.
Professor Dorff is the best! He is so sweet and he really cares about your success. And I love how much he loves christmas!
He was the nicest teacher on campus. He really care about your learning.
Math 112 isn't an easy subject unless you've taken calculus before, but Prof Dorff does a great job of giving you every single opportunity to be successful he can. If you fail, it's because you didn't take those opportunities. TA's, office hours, help sections, very carefully explained lectures: I highly recommend this class.
He was very helpful, and eager to go out of his way to help your specific case or problem. He was kind, and did his best to teach you and to guide you as you try to understand the material. I would definitely recommend this class.
He's a great guy! Pretty funny, and a dad like figure. Calls himself "Coach" because hes coaching us through calculus. I think he's the best teacher there is for Math 112. Highly reccommend!!
REALLY great teacher. I loved this class. He is super clear. Go to class. Pay attention. Do the work. You'll do well even if math isn't your strong suit.
Coach Dorff was an awesome teacher. Although I had taken calc 1 in high school so this was more of a review, I found it enjoyable and his lectures really helpful. He finds any possible way to help his students pass the class and teaches in a very clear way. He also likes to teach a few life lessons every once in a while which are helpful.
Yo so Dorff is the freaking best. I don't think I've ever liked math in my entire life, but he explains things so clearly. I took calculus before, but with Dorff, he made everything make so much more sense. He's fair to students, has sort of a dad-joke humor which can be pretty funny. Lots of work, but totally doable. TAKE CALC FROM HIM!
amazing Math 112 teacher. Provides you with almost everything you could want in helpful study tools. goes out of his way to be there for his students and their needs.
Don't take 112 from anyone else! By the end of the semester it was like he was a father to the 200 of us. Every once in a while he would stop lecture and teach us some important principle of being a good adult. Half-way through class he would usually do something fun to wake us all up and I really wished he had taught 113 as well. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
There is not a better option for MATH 112 than Coach Dorff. Throughout the course of my semester with him we had lots of subs throughout the department and none of them taught as well as Coach Dorff did. He explains things very clearly and prepares you well for tests. Calculus is tough and there is a good amount of HW but Coach Dorff is the best!
All he does is shows a couple of examples each class and gives "pep talks" that only waste time. Homework is difficult and tests are ridiculous. I came into this class loving math. Now I hate it. He doesn't care even though he tries to make it seem that way. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in the lab.
Obsessed about Christmas and so funny! Great professor really knows his stuff.
Coach Dorff is the best professor you can chose for MATH 112 without question. The tests are all department written so he has no control over that but his sections averaged the highest on all of them. He is so clear, posts his lecture notes online, the homework takes time but it's Calculus so that's expected. Take it from him without hesitation.
Anyone who doesn't love Coach Dorff just didn't have the math foundations to do well in calculus. If you're worried about it, take MATH 110 first and you should do just fine. Calculus is a combo of trig, algebra, geometry, and critical thinking. He posts lecture notes with example problems and gives you past exams to study with. Amazing professor!
Dorff is so cute, he loves Christmas and brings it up almost every class. He posts all his notes online so that's nice especially if you didn't go to class. He is the BEST math teacher you can get!! He explains difficult concepts really well and wants to make sure his students understand. Homework and tests are the usual for any math class
He is a caring instructor and goes out of his way to help you be successful. He was away often since he is the head of the math dept. but, in our case, left behind a great instructor. He offers extra credit for HW, has office hours, and Dr. Dorff is a kind Christmas elf.
I loved taking Calc from Coach Dorff! He was great at explaining the difficult concepts, and answering questions. There will be homework every night, and you got to stay on top of your stuff. I ended up missing half of the lectures, becuase I was stuck doing the homework I didn't do the night before. Don't recommend that. Do every EC and your good.
I really loved having Coach Dorff. I felt very unprepared going into this class, but he helped me understand any concept I was struggling to grab. When he was in town he would hold helpful office hours where he would go over homework questions with you. He is the best math teacher I've ever had, I would take any class from him again.
Awesome teacher, very clear and teaches you what you need to know. The class was very well organized and he tries to keep things entertaining.
I took AP Calc in high school, but this was required for my major. Easy class; usually able to finish the homework during class and really enjoyed lectures. Never went to a recitation. He is a phenomenal teacher and explains concepts really well. Also he loves christmas. A lot. Has a few extra credit opportunities. Exams are very fair.
What an awesome guy! Favorite professor at BYU. He's very patient with and genuinely cares about his students and is very flexible towards the students' needs. Lectures are clear, funny, & to the point, and he offers numerous online supplements for his students which helped tremendously. Wish I could take him for all my math classes!
Love Coach Dorff! He makes you call him coach because he truly wants to be your math coach. His lectures were good for the most part. The tests are a bit tricky but ehh I could've studied more. Go to the math lab for homework help. Also he loves Christmas!
Excellent professor!
Loved his style, loved his teaching, loved his humor. On the first day of class he told us, "diligent work, not inborn talent, will get you an A in my class. Just work hard and you will be scoring higher than those with 4.0 GPA's." He gave us many extra credit opportunities and always made us laugh. Should you take him? Yes!
Coach Dorff is such a dad. Like a really good dad. He teaches well and really cares about his students. There is quite a bit of homework, but if you don't understand, go to his office hours and he will explain everything step by step. He remembered my name when I showed up to office hours once, so sweet.
I love Coach Dorff! He's hilarious in a dorky, math-joke type of way. He strives to help us master the concepts while having a good time in lectures. Sometimes he'll even do giveaways in class! I loved learning calculus from him -- he picked his career well. Highly recommended!
I love him! He's super helpful and does his best in class to make sure we understand the material. He does his best to throw a joke or comic strip in when we're in a stressful lecture, and talks about application of the material, not just the material. Expect to go to every lecture, since we have an assignment to turn in every class.
Coach Dorff is a great professor. He cares so much about his students and them doing well in his class. The class isn't difficult if you go to lecture and do the homework. He teaches calculus in a way that's easy to understand the material.
Coach Dorff is an amazing human. He is very clear in explaining things and giving you helpful insights on tests. He is by far one of the best math teachers I have ever had. HE makes concepts seem easier to understand in Calculus. I took AP Calc in high school, but until Coach Dorff taught things to me, I understood them way better than I did!
Coach Dorff is a great math teacher! He can explain things very well and clearly. There are two midterms and a final. He does offer extra credit opportunities which can help your grade. The only problem was that he had to go on a few university sponsored trips and was absent for 10ish class periods.
Coach dorff is awesome. Need I say more he has you call him coach cause he is your math coach. He is so much fun he loves christmas and makes math entertaining. Literally he just wants to help you learn and do better. He would give everyone an A if he could. I hate math but this class was still fun and I learned a ton and never felt hopeless.
Coach Dorff is one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He's a kind, genuine middle-aged man who brings energy and excitement to class, but is not over the top. I couldn't recommend him enough.
"Coach" Dorff, as he is called, is an EXCELLENT professor! I enjoyed his class so much and would take another class from him in a heartbeat. His nerdy math jokes and Christmas references will never be forgotten!
Probably the best math teacher I've ever had! Absolutely loves his subject and all of his students, and really goes out of his way to help us succeed. He tries to make his classes fun and show us how to apply the topics in cool ways. Honestly can't recommend him enough, really sad he's not teaching my class next semester.
Coach Dorff is super funny and his lectures are a lot of fun. He truly wants you to succeed in his class. The tests are hard though so be prepared to study because they dominate your grade.
Coach Dorff is one of the greatest professors I've ever had. He is funny and caring, and he actually wants you to succeed. I definitely recommend going to lectures and labs because they're really helpful in answering questions. I think Coach Dorff makes calculus seem a lot easier, and also he loves Christmas, so he's basically Santa Clause.
Coach Dorff has been one of the best professors I've had at BYU. He's kind, funny, and his lectures are engaging. Definitely go to the lectures, and since he posted his lecture notes online, I would follow along with them as he went over them, which was really helpful. Would definitely take again!
Coach Doff was an awesome professor! I would take him again without hesitation. He really helped us with prepare for exams with a lot of review sessions and tons of past exams to practice with. Really helpful and accessible. If you are taking a math class at BYU, look for Dorff's name. He's the best, hands down.
When taking his class, you feel like you're there to learn, but he'll also give you lots of pro-tips for tests and such in lectures.
The lectures and notes set you up to do well on the homework. Dr. Dorff really wants everyone to do well and is really helpful in preparing for the tests. Do the things he recommends and youll do well.
Coach Dorff is by far the best math professor I've ever had. He helps students understand concepts as well as gives students a sufficient amount of preparation for exams. He's also a very funny and animated dude, bonus! If you have the option, I highly recommend taking his class.
Coach Dorff was an amazing professor! I loved his class and the way he taught. It was very clear what was expected to pass the class and he loves to help students. I learned way more in this class than I did in either of my high school calculus classes and I believe it is because of Coach Dorff!
Great professor! Keeps it's light-hearted while encouraging effort on the studying side.
The nature of this class is a beast but if you follow Coach Dorff's guidance he will prepare you to get A's on the midterms and Exams. Any Math 112 class will require a lot of work but Coach Dorff helps you know where to invest your time to get the best grade. I failed Calc the first time around and retook it with Dorff and got an A. Best teacher.
He calls himself Coach Dorff, and the name fits. He really is a math coach and wants you to succeed. He is fun and does a lot to give his students the best chance to excel in math.
Coach Dorff is such an amazing professor! He really cares for his students and is willing to work with you as long as you ask! Hard class but great professor
Previous to this class, I have never taken calculus and I was very nervous about the class bringing down my gpa. However, Coach Dorff has prepared his class lectures so that everyone can succeed and he invests a lot of time and energy comparatively to other BYU professors. The material is explained step by step along with the provided class notes.
He gives you tons of things to study to improve test scores.
Coach Dorff really is very invested in helping his students succeed in this class. I would absolutely take from him again!! A+++
Absolutely fantastic teacher. I would highly recommend.
Professor Dorff is the best math teacher I've ever had. I always enjoyed his lectures and he is very adept at explaining difficult concepts. He is in every way determined to help you succeed. He makes available lots of extra help and study guides and other tools to help you succeed. Loved the class!
Coach Dorff is the best math professor I've ever had! His lectures are entertaining (as far as math lectures go), he's easily accessible outside of class, he prepares you better for the exams than any other Math 112 professor (his average test grades are consistently higher than everyone else) and is just a genuine, fun person to be around.
He goes by Coach Dorff! He's awesome! He wants you to get an A in his class. It is a bit of work, but he really helps you to learn the stuff.
Coach Dorff teaches math in a super fun and entertaining way. He really cares about the students doing well on the tests and gives practice tests and has reviews. You must do the homework to succeed, but there is a reasonable amount. Tests are fine if you take the practice one. Totally take it from him
He is a great teacher, likes to be called coach, because he does all he can to prep us for the big game (test) but ultimately it is us that has to go out there and preform. Great guy.
Coach Dorff is a great teacher. He is really funny and loves teaching math. The class wasn't too hard and he gives students EVERY opportunity to succeed, such as previous exams to study and great final reviews outside of class. I wish I was taking Dorff for math 113.
Any professor that goes by coach is definitely someone you want. Its clear that he's in your corner and you're not fighting him.
Coach Dorff (as he asks you call him) is an amazing man. He teaches concepts really clearly and is always willing to help. Use his office hours if you can and pray you get a good TA for the Tuesday Thursday classes too. I had a great TA so that helped a lot but even if my TA had been awful Coach does an incredible job at preparing you for finals.
Coach Dorff is seriously amazing. He's funny, makes lectures enjoyable, and teaches calculus very effectively. He's extremely helpful and genuinely wants to help you and be your friend. It's a math class so there's lots of homework but it never felt like too much.
It's tempting not to do the homework. Do the Homework. Other than that the class is accessible.
Coach Dorff was an awesome teacher! This is the only math class that I have to take and I wish I could take another just to have him again. He is clear in explaining topics and teaching material. He is also so sweet and kind! As long as you keep up with the homework and listen in class, you will pass. Visit him during office hours for chocolate!
A normal amount of homework for a math class. Coach Dorff posts all his lecture notes on LS and gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. His lesson are clear and he really wants you to do well.
One of the best teachers Ive ever had. You wont regret taking him for 112. He is the head of the math department and he knows what hes doing. But he also cares more about his students than his high profile positions.
Coach Dorff is the best math teacher Ive ever had. His lectures are very clear and he provides you with many tools to succeed. The last time I took a math class was 6 years ago and I have never taken calculus before but Coach Dorff made calculus doable. Take this class from him!
Every class is Christmas with this guy.
Coach Dorff is awesome! Calculus isn't an easy class, and there was a lot of homework, but he does such a good job of explaining everything! Definitely take this class from him!
Professor Dorf is great. He's the kind of teacher every student should experience during their college career. He's quirky, which makes lectures fun. He's super nice and easily accessible outside of class. His class policies are more than fair, but you have to work hard because of the subject. There might be a better teacher but he's a good option.
I actually took Math 112 from Coach Dorff twice, the first time I got a C- because I slept through class and didn't do the homework, but the second time it was a pretty easy A because I actually put the work in! Coach Dorff is really good at explaining concepts and is very reasonable. You can tell he cares about his students. 100% recommend him.
Coach Dorff (as he has you call him) is an amazing professor. He is honestly the best math teacher I think I have ever had. He really cares about the subject and especially cares about his students. He wants you to get a good grade and will do everything he can to help you out. The class itself isn't that bad. Do the work and you get the grade.
Coach Dorff is a wonderful professor! He is very passionate about math and makes lectures actually enjoyable.
I have never had a professor that cared as much about my success in his class as professor Dorff did. He gives you a lot of resources and patiently explains things.
As someone who really struggles with math, it was so refreshing to finally get a professor who was really good at teaching hard concepts in a clear way. I didn't get a good grade, I still don't like math, but I am so glad I took calculus from Coach Dorff! There is a lot of homework every day, this is definitely a 4 credit class!
He really tries to help the students do well on tests and be successful. He makes notes for his lectures that make class easy. He's also really funny.
If you didn't take calculus in high school you will probably not do well in this class, if you took calc in high school this class is a joke. Dr. Dorff doesn't teach very well, so if you haven't taken calc before you prob won't do great. Do the extra credit and take the hw seriously.
Great teacher. Gives you all the chances in the world to get a good grade.
Dorff was cool. I do not know if it is the same for every year, but he gave out some pretty massive grade changing opportunities right before the final. I love math, but it was not that hard for me to get an A. Tests were fine it easy, but hope that Dorff writes the ones you take, they are much more like what you will have seen in class.
Coach Dorff is the head of the Math Department at BYU. He is the best professor for MATH 112. He prepares you very well and this year his students did about 10 whole percentage points better on average on the midterms than the students of other MATH 112 professors.
Coach Dorff is awesome! Definitely one of my favorite professors at byu. He really cares and wants to help in any way he can. Plus his enthusiasm about math made it a lot more bearable!
'Coach' Dorff, as he prefers to be called, is an inspiration. He is a hilarious, good-natured guy who will do everything he can to help you succeed. He makes lectures entertaining and is always in a good mood. Doesn't always get through all the material in a lecture, but he makes sure the TAs go over it in the next lab.
Dorff is amazing at explaining tough material. He is the fist professor I've had that actually wants you to do well on the tests and earn a good grade in the class. There is homework every night, which can get annoying, but it really is necessary to get a good grade. From what I've heard about other professors for Calc 112, Dr. Dorff is the best.
I dreaded this class at the beginning and it was the hardest one I took, but it became my favorite class thank to Coach Dorff. He teaches the topics clearly, is fun to listen to, personally holds reviews for the test, answers emails quickly, has extra credit, and is the best professor I had. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Coach Dorff is a great professor. Despite daily homework for the class, I felt like my time as a student was respected. He's very approachable and accessible. He's generally a good lecturer, though not the best I've ever had. He cares about students and gives extra credit opportunities. Diligent students won't have a problem in this class.
Coach Dorff is incredibly funny and I loved his class. His lectures were always easy to follow. There is daily homework, but it isn't hard if you've gone to class. The TA lab sections are a good way to get more specific help as well and so are important to go to.
You don't have to go to lectures, but I would. You get opportunities for extra credit, and he's also fantastic. The tests are among the least stressful here at the Y, as he makes it very easy to prepare for them. You can't use a calculator so brush up on your mental math (yes, fractions and trig included.) He's truly passionate about what he does.
He was one of the most wonderful professors I've ever encountered in my life. He is SO good at explaining difficult concepts, he is compassionate and kind towards students and very truly want you to succeed.
Couch Dorff is one of most amazing teacher i have never met. he cares about student, and give very clear and awesome lectures. even though as a international student i have never take any calculus class before, he made me understand all the concept very easily. as long you do all the homework, come to class and learn, make efforts, you'll be good.
Coach Dorff is literally the BEST math teacher. He works so hard to make sure his students succeed. He gives notes and practice tests. His lectures are entertaining and helpful. You still have to work, but he makes Calculus a lot better. Would definitely take from him again!
Coach Dorff is hands-down the best math teacher I have ever had. His students get 4-5% higher on tests than other students. Calc is one of the hardest math classes here, but Coach Dorff manages to make it enjoyable. He tries to plan his office hours when the most students can go. His excitement about math is contagious and he explains concepts well
Coach Dorff is phenomenal. He really cares about his students' success and lectures make difficult concepts much easier and enjoyable to learn.
Best teacher I have had at BYU!
He is a great, caring professor who is more than willing to help you. His lectures are pretty good and he always tries to add a little bit of humor into class. He's pretty laid back and good at what he does. Do your homework and get help when you need it and you'll do fine.
He is a super clear and kind teacher. His teaching style is very easy to understand and he gives all of his notes online as well as several practice exams to help you with midterms and the final. I 100% recommend him for anyone looking to take Math 112
Coach Dorff is a really good professor. All semester he even gave out chocolates to people who were having a bad day. He travels a lot because he is the president of MAA so there is a sub every couple weeks. But when he is here is lectures are very clear and he genuinely wants everyone to understand the material.
Amazing teacher! His lectures were always very clear and even gives out chocolate/t-shirts. He's amazing at math and really cares about every student. Coach offers easy extra credit. Coach Dorff really wants every student to succeed in life, no matter what they want to major in. He's a great example of living the gospel. He's one of my favorites!
Coach Dorff is the best! He is the most caring professor I have had! He teaches well and takes extra effort to provide students with help to do better in the class. He brings chocolate to class and that helps describe his personality. He is really funny and a fun guy! Would highly recommend him!
Dorff really cares about your success in this class and so it's fairly easy to do well in his class. Tests are straight forward and come exactly from the lectures and practice exams so do as many practice exams as you can!
This class is super intense. There are 2 daily assignments that are a good portion of your grade. The midterms are hard. If you've taken calc in high school you'll be fine, but if you only have a pre-calc background, avoid this class like the plague. Coach, however, is a gem and is so passionate about math, his students, and the gospel.
Calc can be hard but Coach Dorff teaches very simply and provides loads of resources to learn outside of class. He helps students prepare for tests big time. He is also very passionate and inspiring. He won't just teach about math, but will also teach about how to succeed in life!
I loved Coach Dorff and his class. He not only grew my calculus skills but grew me as a person. He could tie both the spiritual and humorous into his class. I would recommend him every time
Coach Dorff is an awesome guy. The tests are really hard, but he gives a lot of help. Study guides, past exams for examples and extra practice, publishes all the lecture notes, and even hosts extra review sessions right before exams. Having a good TA makes a lot of difference too, because they'll go over homework problems (which are graded).
"Coach" Dorff is a solid professor. Calculus is hard, but he teaches math clearly and if you pay attention in lectures it's pretty easy to understand. He's very passionate about math and life in general which makes him fun to listen to, and he tells cheesy jokes a lot that make him really loveable.
Really cares about helping you learn calculus and pass the class, and does a good job at it too. His lectures can be kinda unfocused sometimes but he uses that to make his classes more enjoyable and less of a grind.
Coach Dorff is HILARIOUS! He is so kind and very inspirational. He gets off topic so easily and it's funny. Even though I loved going to his class, his teaching style didn't suit me well. His class was pretty confusing but he wants his students to succeed. You have hw due EVERYDAY (except Sunday's). TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS EC OPPORTUNITIES!!
Coah Dorff is a nice guy, but I wasn't a fan of the way he taught calc. He has a habit of using analogies to explain concepts, which if that's helpful to you, he's probably a good prof for you. If you're like me, you'll reluctantly show up to lecture to turn homework in, but not pay attention. I got the grade I did just by being good at math.
Coach Dorff was the best! Take him! I went into the class having only taken precalc in high school two years earlier. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to keep up but calc turned out to be one of my easiest classes. Just make sure to keep up with the homework and do the practice tests Coach Dorff makes available and you'll be fine.
I am not a math lover, but I would consider taking more college math if it meant I could have Coach Dorff as a teacher again. He is so knowledgeable about the material, really cares for his students, explains concepts clearly and works insanely hard to provide resources so that we succeed.
Coach Dorff is awesome! He prepares students for the test without getting bogged by frivolous info like most math teachers. He definitely gives his students the tools to succeed. I'm pretty sure he is the best Calc 1 professor on campus.
I loved Coach Dorff as a professor but his Calculus 1 class was difficult. He provides lecture notes and there's written and online HW due throughout the week. The tests are extremely difficult and I did poorly on every one even though I prepared rigorously for each one, including the final. His charm is hard to come by, so I'd give him a chance!
Coach Dorff is the best calc teacher on campus. Calc is HARD! But Dorff does a great job at giving you all the materials you need to succeed. He gives you lots of practice tests so you'll be familiar with how the tests are. You get 2 assignments every class. I hate calc but Dorff makes it bearable!
Coach Dorff is the best professor I've had-- he teaches the concepts clearly and is exceptional at making the difficult calculus content accessible to those who are new to it. His classes score about 10% higher on the final. I wouldn't take it from anyone else.
Though I did terrible in this class, I really loved Coach Dorff and his teaching style. He is a very inspirational man. He would often go off on tangents in most lectures to discuss important tips about life and how to be the best that you can be. A true leader and hilarious guy. He will help you out to the best of his ability.
He is the head of Mathematics for America so he knows his stuff. He is always happy and excited to teach and teaches very clear in lectures. 10/10 would recommend.
Best, most inspirational professor for calc 1!
I LOVE HIM!! He is so funny and a great teacher. There is a lot of homework, but that is expected. If you complete the assignments, use the study guides, and PRACTICE then you will do good. My T.A. was super helpful too.
Coach Dorff is probably the best kind of professor you could have. Calculus isn't an easy class but he makes the content so easy to follow. His lectures were clear and engaging. He provides clear and organized lecture notes. He also has such an amazing heart. He truly cares about his students and does his best to make the class manageable.
I loved taking Coach Dorff for calc! WARNING: I took his class during covid, so I'm not aware of what his in-person classes are like. I will say, that in the beginning, it was a lot of work, but I think it's all for the best. He appreciates feedback and takes that into account in order to help the student out, and has your best interests at heart.
Coach Dorff is awesome. Calc is tough, but he teaches it in a way that is easy to understand. There's quite a bit of homework (stuff for before and after class every day) but it's manageable. His classes are light-hearted and not boring. He does TONS of example problems to help you with the homework, both in class and on video for later viewing.
This class sucked. I'm a math major and I'm generally good at math and love it, but I hated this. It's not the fault of Coach Dorff, rather it's mostly the structure of the class. Tests were all multiple choice and each question was worth way too many points and things weren't always explained in enough depth. You taught the material to yourself.
Do not take Coach Dorff's class. His lecture notes were ridiculously confusing, he didn't explain things clearly, and there was material on the tests that was never explained in class. All of the tests were multiple choice with too few questions and too many points for each question. Worst class I've ever taken. He was nice, but this class sucked.
It's calculus, it's rough. Having it over zoom made it even harder. However, I will say that Coach Dorff did a REALLY great job. He was so kind, and always tried joking with us. 4 midterms for the class, daily homework (online and written), and one final. It's a hard class but he taught it well.
Coach Dorff is an amazing teacher, he provides so many extra reviews to help prepare for exams. Exams have super long time limits so you have plenty of time to double-check. Homework was mandatory but very reasonable. That homework helps tremendously for exams. I would 100% take him again for ANY class. He helps you no matter what. Ask and recieve.
Coach Dorff is really good at going through and explaining things, but often this will lead him to go off topic, and not cover all the topics he should have covered. The homework is hard and the exams are even harder. However, Coach Dorff does care about his students, and gives lots of tools and resources to be successful.
Coach's attitude to a forced online experience this year due to COVID has been exceptional. Calculus is not an easy subject across the board & Coach made a real effort to put every tool in our hands to do well on the homework & exams. There was a lot of material, but that's the case with Calculus. I'd take any of Coach's classes. Incredible class.
coach Dorf was the best math teacher I have ever had. He is very concerned with the success of his students.
Coach Dorff really is more like a coach than a professor. If you are looking for a professor who cares about his students, Coach Dorff is your man! He is very personable and loves math. Especially if you have never taken Calculus before, Coach Dorff is really good at explaining concepts in different ways for different learning styles.
Super nice and kind, genuinely wants you to succeed!
Coach Dorff is AMAZING. Easily the best math teacher I've ever had. He gives great lectures and is great at explaining all the concepts. The devil works hard, but Coach Dorff works harder. I almost failed calc my senior year of high school and was dreading doing it again but I really enjoyed it this semester. Coach motivates you and makes you smile
Coach Dorff is amazing! He is such a kind professor and he really cares about his students. There are lots of resources to help you be prepared for the tests (practice tests and lecture notes) and if you pay attention during the lectures you'll do well in the class. He made calc a lot simpler than I remember it in the past!
I haaaattted taking this class online. Coach Dorff is an incredible professor who cares a lot about helping his students during this difficult time. When I reached out to him he was always respectful and offered resources to help me. His teaching style is very much you learn it all at home, then go over examples in class.
Coach Dorff is easily one of the best professors I've ever had. He loves math and loves teaching it, and it shows in the quality of his teaching. He cares about his students and is always willing to help. I had never learned calculus before, but Coach Dorff provides so many opportunities to practice and review that it wasn't ridiculously difficult.
Coach Dorff was really caring teacher and while the class overall is lots of hard work, Coach Dorff definately works hard to provide resources and teaching so that you can learn everything well. Work hard and you will do great in Calc.
Coach Dorff went out of his way to help our class succeed this semester during the pandemic. He provided lecture notes, extra practice problems, office hours, test reviews, and a few extra credit opportunities. He really cares about student success and wants you to do well. I would take this class again in a heartbeat!
Coach Dorff was awesome!! He was so nice and always tried to help us succeed even during the pandemic. Class attendance was really important, and there is a lot of homework, but he is fair and really funny.
Coach Dorff is a super great professor. He cares a lot about the students and wants them to succeed. He structures his class in such a way that it really prepares you for the exams and helps you to get confident with calculus. I would definitely take a class from Coach Dorff again.
The reviews show that "Coach" Dorff as he makes you call him is normally a much better professor. However online this is not the case. Grading criteria was unclear and changed multiple times. Grades were only posted after numerous students complained and about a month into the semester we received points on homework done the first week. Don't take!
His class was really enjoyable. He was good at adapting the course to meet the needs of the students and make it easier for us. He also provided tons of resources for us to do as well as possible.
Coach Dorff was a very good teacher. The semester started out rough, but he adapted his teaching style to accommodate everyone, which was super impressive. He really cared for the students and just wanted everyone to succeed. I would highly recommend taking this class from him.
Coach Dorff is a nice guy, but not my favorite professor. I took Calc AB in High school and did very well, but decided to take Calc 1 again to make sure I really understood the material. If I hadn't taken calc before, I would not have gotten an A. The teaching style felt very rushed, and we would never finish the daily material and would go over.
He's so chill he asks to be called "Coach" Dorff, because he's your math coach. He is, hands down, the most helpful math teacher I've ever had. He goes to great lengths to make sure you have the materials you need to succeed. Very kind too.
Coach Dorff loves math, teaching, and his students which makes him great at his job. Long story short, Calculus is really hard, no matter who you take it from, but Coach Dorff will help out.
One of my favorite professors. Super sweet, and you can tell he cares about his students. He listens and responds well to feedback and he is very patient. Is able to explain concepts well and gives a reasonable amount of homework for a four-credit class. Exams are also fairly reasonable and he prepares you well for them.
Coach Dorff is the probably one of the most down to earth professors I've had here at BYU so far. He literally acts like your math coach and gives you SO many resources to do well in the class. Take from him if you can.
Dorff explained complex concepts in a clearly. Some tests were hard, but there were 4 midterms so things average out. An expected amount of work for 4 credits. My only complaint is that the course moved so fast we often didn't cover most of the material in class. He would touch on the very basics, and the homework contained much harder content.
This guy has substituted for my class a couple of times and his explanations are so much better than my professor's. TAKE this class from him. He is entertaining and engaging, and he doesn't skip over details that are "easy" for you to do yourself when working on class examples, which is sooo helpful when trying to actually understand calculus.
Coach Dorff is one of my favorite professors here. He is so good at what he does and is a wonderful teacher. He only taught one class this semester and his class got the highest test scores every time out of every other Math 112 class. He is so funny and generous and I would reccommend him to anyone and everyone
Coach Dorff is a great guy, but he just lets the textbook do the teaching in this class. Some in my class were mad at him for that, but if you just do the work it doesn't make a difference. High A is attainable.
Coach Dorff is the BEST professor I've ever had. Besides being a great teacher (he explains concepts very clearly and helps you out with homework), he is caring for his students. He even brings pizza and chocolate once a week. If you need a special code to register for his class, just ask the math department and they will give it to you. 100/10 !!!
Coach Dorff is great. I took calc from a different professor and had to withdraw after failing two midterms. I figured calc was outside of my abilities and considered changing majors but then I took from Coach Dorff and got an A. It was a bit of work but also my favorite class. He provides all the materials needed including extra videos.
Coach Dorff was an amazing teacher who explained calc in a manner that was easy to understand. He genuinely cares for his students and does his best to make sure they succeed. Go out of your way to take his class, you will not be disappointed.
Coach Dorff clearly explained all the concepts, and the examples he used made it easy to understand the things he taught. He provided a lot of resources like practice tests and problems that help you prepare for the tests, and he was helpful at answering questions outside of class. The class was very enjoyable and I would recommend taking from him.
Coach Dorff!!! Stinking legend. Best calc teacher of all time
Everyone knows that calculus is hard and coach Dorff does something about it. Each class is focused on the critical elements that you will need on HW and exams. He is amazing! Also, daily classes are ideal to get hard concepts such as calculus, so I really recommended that daily format with Coach Dorff.
Coach Dorff is absolutely the best professor I think I've ever had. You can tell that he genuinely cares not only about the subject he teaches, but also about his students. If I could have him for every math class I take in the future, I would
Coach Dorff was so kind and helped everyone in the class with their questions. He explained things clearly and made going to class enjoyable. Nightly homework but usually 5-8 problems and he answers questions in the class period before the assignment is due. Mid terms every 2-3 weeks but it made the new material to learn. Highly recommend!!
Coach Dorff is the best professor I've ever had at BYU. If every class was taught by him I would have a 4.0! Calculus is a tough class with a lot of hard material, but Coach Dorff does an amazing job of making it easy to understand and he will do everything he can to help his students navigate the coursework. Absolutely an 11/10!
TAKE THIS CLASS FROM COACH!!! he is the sweetest and makes calc seem easy. He truly loves his students and the material. I was in his office every time he had office hours and he was so amazing and ready to help. We had a small class so he would give out Tshirts and brought in pizza for us. Favorite class this semester hands down.
COACH DORFF IS THE BEST! Literally the best professor out there. The tests are not easy, but he gives you tests from past years that are pretty similar to the real deal. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS RESOURCES. Don't be fooled.. he makes math fun and enjoyable... he'll try to turn you into a math major.
Coach Dorff is a G. He has tough material to teach but I had never taken Calc and I was able to grasp it. He is so nice and definitely cares about his students. I never thought I would get an A- but he definitely helped me get there. Highly recommend
Professor Dorff is awesome! It is clear that he is passionate about math and teaching. He makes learning math easy and enjoyable. The class has homework due everyday Monday-Saturday, but it isn't too hard. I highly recommend taking a course from Coach Dorff.
The class itself is difficult but that's because it's calc, but Coach Dorff teaches it in a way that makes sense. I genuinely think I would have a lower grade rn if I wasn't in his class. His lectures are fun and easy to understand, he's accessible outside of class, and shows genuine care for his students. I srsly wish he was teaching 113 next fall
Professor Dorff did an extremely poor job teaching and insulted students on several occasions.
I put my heart and soul into this class, and I still got a B. However, despite my difficulty with grasping the material, I still found Coach Dorff to be a wonderful professor. He treats his students with respect and even lets students visit him during his Office Hours. Coach also replaces your lowest midterm with the grade you got on your Final.
Amazing course!! It was a ton of work, (an assignment due every day but Sunday), but very well organized and makes calculus totally manageable, I'd take every math class from him if possible.
I seriously LOVE this professor. He cares so much and gives incentives like fancy chocolates and free t-shirts and has fun with the class. He also provides an amazing amount of resources to help you, like extra videos, & office hours. And he just cares so much. He never made things harder than they had to be. Take calc from Dorff you'll love him!!!
Homework Every Day, Great Lecturer. Do the practice exams and you will do good on the Tests. Other than that he is awesome
Coach Dorff is the best professor I have had at BYU. He cares so deeply about his students success and gives so many tools to help you along the way. Whether you are naturally good at math or not so much, he is very helpful and caters to all needs. Loved his lectures and there were also 1-2 practice tests per exam that were so great for exam prep!
PLEASE if you are taking math 112, do yourself a favor and take it from Coach Dorff. He dumbs it down for you before introducing a complex topic, tests are easier than the homework so you're prepared, and his lectures are never monotonous.
Having taken calculus before, I thought this class was pretty easy. Dorff makes things very very simple, which is great for those that need help. I rarely attended lectures as they were very VERY slow paced (covered 3-4 practice Q's per lecture). Tons of homework, but homework is harder than the tests so tests are pretty easy. Great professor.
He's honestly the best professor I've had at BYU. He makes plenty of practice exams that are actually really helpful. His study guide for the final is legit. I don't think I would have gotten an A if I had a different professor. There's lots of homework but you can get help from the math lab. If you have to take this course take it from him.
Dorff. Is. A. Unit. An absolute legend. The guy knows exactly how you feel as a student and teaches in a very clear way so that I felt prepared for all of my homework and tests. Be warned, this is calculus and almost everyone has to visit the TA lab every once in a while, but Dorff reduced the time necessary for me to be there. Great guy.
This professor is super caring and wants the best for each of his students. He does a great job teaching the concepts of calculus. This is a fast paced class but that is expected as a college course. I would totally recommend this professor and would take his class again.
The statistics speak for themselves, just take his class...
a great professor and a really fun class. Lots of homework but it is not too hard.
100% recommend Dorff. Ignore the comments below if they're negative because he's the best professor and I'm not a math major. If you feel like you don't have understand pre calc concepts like trig and algebra, he will provide the necessary resources to succeed in the class. Didn't take a math class in 5 years before taking this and I got an A.
Coach Dorff does everything he possibly can to help you succeed and provides TONS of resources to get ahead and get help with difficult problems or concepts. He has a strong testimony he tactfully incorporates into lectures and has a cute sense of humor. There is a lot of homework, but not an unmanageable amount. Would definitely recommend!
homework daily, 3 midterms with 1 final, he replaces the lowest midterm grade if your final exam grade is better, offers extra credit, records lectures and provides notes so everything can be done online (attendance doesn't matter). Calc is hard but this is the best teacher you could get. Offers chocolate after lectures
He had practice exams which he claimed had concepts that were on his tests. Sometimes I felt that those practice exams didn't exactly relate to what he was testing us on. Overall though he gave us lots of resources such as videos, lecture notes etc. There were several of those resources that I didn't even use and I still got an A.
I have taken two classes from Professor Dorff and was satisfied with his performance both times. He goes through each step of a problem and reviews topics like trig on the side, so he is a good professor to take Calc 1 from if you have been away from math for awhile. He also offers extra practice resources like lecture summaries and practice exams.
Coach Dorff is literally the best! Math 112 is definitely a hard class but coach gives you everything you need to be successful as long as you are willing to put in the work. He makes multiple practice tests for exams as well as a study guide and gives many extra credit opportunities. He is also just the sweetest! You won't regret taking his class.
Coach Dorff is amazing, he teaches well and is super kind! I did feel like homework was harder normally than what we learned in lecture, but between the TAs and the math lab you have everything you need in order to succeed! Be ready for a homework assignment every day
Coach Dorff is one of the best professors that I have had at BYU. His lectures were very engaging and I learned a lot in his class. He is also very kind and wants the best from his students. When I was going through a rough patch, he was very willing to work with me and I appreciate that. Be prepared for homework everyday except Sunday.
Seriously an amazing math professor. So many resources and extra credit opportunities that were both fun and interesting. There is homework everyday so make sure you plan your schedule accordingly, but it started to get manageable and enjoyable near the end. Don't forget to attend lectures. TAKE CALC FROM HIM!
I loved Coach Dorff, his class is challenging and there are 6 homework assignments per week which can become extremely time consuming and frustrating, but overall he is an amazing teacher very understanding and only wants whats best for his students.
Professor Dorff's class is challenging but rewarding. With daily homework, frequent exams, and tons of helpful resources, I was able to succeed by staying diligent and using tools like unstuckstudy ai for study prep. Highly recommend for motivated students.
I took his UNIV 101 class but if I had to take a math class I would take his. He genuinely cares about his students' success and has so many resources available. You can tell he is also very passionate about what he teaches and he wants you to not just know the material but understand it.
Coach Dorff is awesome. He is a super good teacher and puts a lot of effort into making sure that his students understand everything. He has engaging lectures and makes learning fun. There is a lot of hw but not any more than any other Calc class. Super good teacher. I also felt that as an RM he made getting back in to calc super easy.
Coach Dorff is by far one of the most caring, thoughtful professors I've ever had. He prepares extra practice problems, records how-to videos, and goes above and beyond in helping his students succeed. Would recommend.
Get ready to teach yourself
Coach Dorff is the best. He truly cares about his students and provides lots of resources to help you learn. I was terrified to take calc, but because of him I was able to get a good grade. There's HW due every day except Sunday, but the tests were easier than the HW in my opinion. Use the resources provided and you'll be fine. Highly recommend.
Amazing teacher! There is a lot of homework, but it prepares you to do well on the exams. By the end of the class, I was able to feel completely confident in the material! His classes' test average was usually way higher than all the other teachers, so I would definitely recommend taking this class from him! (Also he gives out free chocolate)
If you're looking for emotional support but not good teaching, go ahead and take this class
Coach Dorff is THE BEST. I haven't taken a math class in 4 years and scored a 35% on the pre-test and I was pretty worried I would fail the class. I decided to push through. Coach has so many resources and explained everything so well, I did amazing in the class, never scoring below a 99% on the tests! Take the class from him!!
Dorff is the best Math professor I've had. The amount of resources and his lectures are amazing. Homework grading though is the only thing i'd change on this course. We had homework due every day but Sunday and they're a big chunk of the final grade. I got A on every test but ended up with a B for missing homework to work part time. TA labs great
Does a good job
Everyone loves him, but he isn't that good in person. His online videos are super useful, but during class he just talks about whatever and its not always on topic either. A lot of the homework is so hard and it doesn't even show up on the tests, so it is hard to study not knowing how hard it will be. I really wouldn't recommend his class.
This man is a saint. I would highly highly recommend him. I learned calc really well, and I am so grateful I took it from him. He explains stuff in a really great way, and has high quality review stuff and explanations that make life a lot easier. I took his class my very first semester of BYU ever and it was a great way to start off college
I have never been very confident in math so I was a little nervous to take this class. But! Prof. Dorff lectures very thoroughly reviewed all questions that showed up in HW and his practice tests were really good at preparing me for the exams! First time I've actually enjoyed math.
