This guy doesn't know how to teach. He gives quizzes every week that nobody does well on and those quizzes and two tests are all your grade depends on. Boo. Take someone else.
This guy is a terrible teacher!!! Avoid him.
I realized no one can really teach this class. It's either the test are hard but they can teach or the just can't teach and he is in the middle. No reason you should get lower then a C because of his grading system.Take him if no one else is left. Ouestion on the test suck, hard to undersatnd them.
Talk talk talk, then he writes what she wrote word for word on the board (takes about 10 minutes). Talk talk talk, writing writing writing. We know how to take notes, and nobody wants to spend another minute watching your ass and arms jiggle more than we have to.
I think he is a pretty good teacher! He explained everything well, and always was available to answer my questions. His class is somewhat hard, but also fair. I learned a lot about economics.
Easy class if you stay awake, and even if you dont. The book was very easy and helpful, but i still barely used it. He pretty much goes with the book. If you pay some attention it is all just common sense.
avoid at all cost!

good class if u go and participate. tests are a bit hard, though. for a good grade attendance is a must
good teacher
He is a good teacher, but the tests are hard. Make sure you do the problems because that is what half on one test is and then read the book because the multiple choice is right out of the book, but the questions are worded weird to make it a hard test.
i dont what it is but he seems harder than my other econ classes but i do better here. his tests are hard, hwk is hard, i dont read the book, most of the things are common sense. a whole lot of drawing graphs with brief explanations
He makes tests with the intention that you dont know the material, but he will still ask you about it. Tests are a KILLER! I thought his teaching style was weird, the way he talks makes it hard to understand what he is saying. I was confused the whole semester, the book explains way better than he does.
The WORST teacher in the world. His tests are so DIFFICULT and the way he presents material, well, makes no sence whatsoever! For "final"-basically know everything from the beginning of the class to the very end. Extermely interesing class, but very bad teacher for it! Everyone fails his tests, at the end of class, grades are dissapointing!
Teaches right out of the book. Tests are hard but he grades on a curve. Attendance not required.
Decent at lecturing. Doesn't seem flexible when you argue points with him. I asked him to make the tests shorter because a lot of people didn't finish in time, he gave me some BS about real life situation won't give you extra time. Still got an A in his class, but i had to work hard for it. Attending every lecture helped.
This professor is rediculously confusing. I've taken Econ1A from a different professor who made it so much easier to understand.
I took his class my first semester at college, so I wasn't doing much studying.I went to class on most days, though I had a period when I never went. His class is easy to understand but he can be a bit of an ass if you don't participate and play along.I got a B,but so did the other kids I studied with who did much more work than me.He just liked me.
The WORST Professor in the WORLD!!! His tests are a nightmare and EVERYONE fails them...AVOID!!!!
Dowell did an okay job at introducing econometrics, even though it was his first time teaching the subject. His lectures are not the most exciting, but he gets the job done. His exams were very, very easy, as were his grading for project and problem sets.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The subject isn't even that difficult, but his tests are horrible! Very little hw, 3 tests w/ a cumulative final. Lectures aren't mandatory, and they don't really help. They are very scattered. I had to rely on the book for the whole semester. Good news--I have never seen a Prof. curve like he does.
Awesome teacher and cute too!
Outstanding Professor Complex and demanding course but at the end you'll be glad you put the effort in, having learned a wealth of worthwhile knowledge.
WHOEVER THINK HE'S CUTE IS OUT OF THEIR MINDS! BUT HE IS A GOOD TEACHER! EXCELLENT AND VERY INFORMATIVE. IF YOU READ AND DO HIS PROBLEM SETS, YOU WILL DEFINITELY PASS. TAKE HIM.
One of the ONLY teachers to get it right in my entire time at CSUS. Actively incorporates headline economic news issues into every lecture and its relevance in econ terms (something normal media always leaves out). Always starts class with a "what happened in the world since last we met?" discussion. Watch out though! Tests harder than homework!!!
Hm, extremely complex course especially just for an intro but this professor was good. I actually understand him. You just gotta do the work and the optional problem sets. if you do the work you're guarantee to pass.
Teacher was very hard, I am an Econ major, and i ended up dropping the class after a few weeks, I found out later that half the class dropped by midway, and that by the time the final came, hardly anyone who was left showed up to take it since there was no hope, worse teacher i have had yet at sac state
One of the professors I actually liked. the way he teaches is clear. he goes over materials that you will need to know for homework and test. i never really used my text book i just attended class and took notes. doing the homework helps. he provides answers for hw. not a bad course if you do the work.
I took dowell for macroecon and he is one of the WORST prof I've ever had! I tried going to him for help and instead of helping me, he ended up yelling at me and I ended up leaving his office in rage and discouraged. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Have to show up to class, do the homework sets, and engage in conversation, and you will pass no problem. He's hilarious and looks like a cartoon.
horrible teacher. i will never recommend him to anyone. he treats you like you are stupid and if the class as a whole doesnt know the answer to the question, he gives a pop quiz!
I took him a while back. His class is do-able, just show up, read the reading, and do study guide well. The class consisted of an essay/short answer midterm and cumulative final or a final paper and no final, or a non-cuml final and 10 p. paper (I know it sounds weird). I am not an econ major, difficult for a GE, but completely pass-able course.
Fantastic class
He is intimidating at first but is a really great professor to learn from. His tests are tough and reading from the book is unnecessary, skim instead. Take VERY detailed notes in class, a side note he says may be on the test. He can seem a little scary but he has no problems explaining any question in class, homework or otherwise.
One of the best professors at SacState so far. Take his classes if you really want to learn anything. Exams may be on a harder side slightly, but he grades on curve. Highly recommend!
Good professor. Really cares about the success of his students. If you show up, do the readings AHEAD of class, and participate, you'll do fine. He tracks attendance through quizzes and short response papers, so don't miss class too frequently.
Great Professor. Very insightful and knows a lot about MacroEcon. Very tough tests, he will use different definitions then he used in lecture so make sure to study all sides of the material.
This professor was great! His lectures were interesting and he always took time to explain things. He offers extra credit and gives easy little quizzes when attendance is low - so go to class, its worth it! He also curved our midterm by 21 points, so I got a 96%! Great professor
He is a very effective teacher. Gives you detailed lectures and homework packets that are really helpful. The book explains things decently. He grades based on who scores the highest, removing outliers. He drops your lowest test score. Great teacher. If you study and pay attention, you'll get an A.
If you are a full time student and not working you'll benefit from the class. If you're working full time, consider taking the class with someone else teaching it. On top of being beat-up at work, you will find that the lectures are confusing. Also, you will have to peace the readings together and you won't even come close to 20% of what he lectures.
Dowell is a great teacher. Extremely well read and has a passion for teaching. Show up to class and take good notes. He engages with students quite frequently. Tests can be somewhat challenging but not impossible. You'll learn plenty in this class if your interested. Highly recommended
One of the poorest attempts of teaching I have seen in quite sometime irreverent teaching style, avoid!
Smart professor but teaching is definitely not his thing. Went back and fourth between chapters in the book multiple times per class, making it difficult to follow along. Tests had nothing to do with what was taught in class or to do with the book. Horrible teacher. Heed my warning, do not take.
Stay clear of his class!! Doesn't post grades, takes weeks to hand back assignments, worst of all he has no idea how to teach.
I've found Professor Dowell to be pretty enjoyable and not very difficult at all, but the rest of the class seems to be struggling. I don't see how; his lectures are very clear and straightforward, midterm is take-home, and there's no surprises on the tests. Go to class, pay attention, do the reading, and it should be an easy A.
Professor Dowell assigns a ton of reading for 113 and tests are based on the lectures and reading. So, show up to class, take very good notes, read, read, and read some more. If you can do that, then you can get an A, it just takes some work on your part. The midterm is a take-home, but it is harder then any test I took in class. Good teacher.
This class is required for history and social science majors, but it's treated like only econ majors are in it. The history aspect is very minimal and unless you're an econ major it can be difficult to follow. Dowell jumps around in his lectures which can be confusing. One of the hardest classes I've had to take. You'll work hard for a C.
Like any other college course, you will need to spend a significant amount of time reading and studying in order to do well. Dowell's lectures are clear and well organized. His expectations are clear. Show up to class, take detailed notes, engage yourself, and you will earn an A! Do not be scared of the negative comments below.
I like it
If you can avoid taking this professor the better.
Great Professor! I started the semester thinking professor Dowell is extremely hard and there's no way i will pass, but i was wrong. He was very helpful and is one of my fave professors now. I feel prepared for 145! SO glad i took him. Just try your hardest, do all the hw assignments, DONT MISS CLASS, and study for tests and you will do fine.
Seriously do not take this class with this professor, he expects you to be a master at statistics before you even start and help is non existent, all he says is "Go to the library and get a basic stats book, its easy." That would be fine if his class was the only one you were taking. Problem sets have nothing to do with the class. AVOID if you can.
Please do yourself a favor and find ANYONE other than this guy unless you already have your masters in statistics. The class is hard, the problem sets take multiple days to complete and in the end he's not helpful at all in teaching the class. He takes pride in failing students so don't screw around-he hates everyone who is not him.
He's quite smart and he's very aware of that. He's challenging but it's worth it since this class is for Econ majors after all and he makes us learn our stuff. His HW does take a lot of time, but it's 6 assignments for the entire semester besides the research project. He tries to scare people away, don't bite. Just don't fall behind in class.
I took him for 112 and 113, there is a lot of information. You must show up to every class for the notes. I go through about 4-5 pages of notes per lecture. The reading helps add details to his lecture but it isn't completely necessary to pass or do well. All tests are short answer- there are three. He knows his stuff. Hard but he teaches well.
I think Professor Dowell is a good professor! He can be pretty scary to approach but he is there if you ask for the help! There are 7 homework assignments (he only grades 4), one Mid Term and a final. Read and Review notes and you should be able to pass! Sit in the front to take notes since his handwriting isn't clear when sitting in the back!
Straight forward. Easy A if you just pay attention. Took him at CRC.
He teaches the course like a grad level class. If you're shaky on stats, skip this one. That being said, I learned more failing this class than I did when I aced it the following semester. Tough course that will push you to learn some pretty advanced stuff. If you have the math background for it, I would recommend him over any other instructor.
A tough class, but he's the only professor to take if you really want to learn the history of thought.
He's one of the only professors who teach this course, so you'll most likely have no choice but take him. He's a terrible professor, doesn't care about his students. He always has a smart remark about everything. He puts down student ideas. You also never know how your doing in his class because he takes weeks to return your work.
This class was scary because the final was 40% of our grade (4 essays in 2 hours, open note, but difficult because there was SO much material we covered). I stayed up every night the week before to study because I really wanted an A. Other than that 60% 3 papers. The syllabus is misleading- rather than 75100 pages/week I would say 100180.
I loved Professor Dowell's class. It's a lot of material, but he invites participation, and it really helps you remember everything if you get involved in the discussion. He does have kind of a dry, sarcastic sense of humor that rubbed some students the wrong way, but I thought he was hilarious. Just come ready to learn and you'll get along fine.
Simply put, this man is a GENIUS. His lectures are very thorough and jam packed with information. There is a substantial amount of important reading in this class that is necessary for the midterms and final. If you're one of those people who don't do the readings, you will get by if you go to every class and write down everything he says.
He definitely knows his stuff and I found the class very interesting and engaging. Dowell is a very tough grader but the tests are take home essays so it could be worse. Go to every class since the tests are on the lectures and the reading (which there is a lot of )
He makes the class super hard! He's lecture heavy and the problem sets he gives have no correspondence to the tests. You have to show up every day because he gives pop quiz before every class. Lastly, you won't know your grade till the end of the semester because he never posts it online. I have never failed a class in my life before ):
First of all, don't take him! Extremely boring and exams are all written essays. 1 take home exam(6 pages), 1 in class, and 1 final. No homework whatsoever, but loads of reading from 3 different books and online resources. Must be highly knowledgeable in subject to do well on exams. Grades even the smallest grammar mistake. Don't take!
Prof Dowell is intelligent. He is very direct and informative. He will help you if you need it but, expects you to meet him half way. Be there every class is all I have to say. There is a lot of information in his lectures. Problems sets are tough, but they actually help you learn useful things. Just review problems sets when solutions are posted.
Professor Dowell does not prepare you well for upcoming tests. Posts practice short answer questions for the final, but does not post their answers until the final is held. This makes preparing rather difficult. Would not advise you to take this class with him unless he is the only option.
He's an econometrist, this is his forte. He lectures from the book so I really suggest you read it ahead of time. First half of the semester is a lot of Stats base, second half is regressions. 10 problem sets (some he collects, some he doesn't), 2 midterms, 1 final. Group study really helped a lot for this class.
If you want to be prepared for 145 then I would suggest taking him because you will learn the material. Only thing I did not like about him is that he does not like to reply to emails. Be ready to read and put in work.
He starts off slow so keep up because he will change pace real quick. He was one to the hardest professors I have had but at least I learned the material. If you are naturally smart he will be easy. If you are an average student be prepared to work. I truly feel I am ready for 145.
Tough class but you will learn a lot. He is a very knowledgeable but is known to make mistakes. If you think he messed up on something make sure you ask him because he made quite a few mistakes in my night class.
Love Prof. Dowell! One of my favorite Econ professors. He's very smart and knowledgeable. His classes are hard; took him for Econ 113, 100A and 140, and had to work hard in each class, but learned so much from him. If you actually want to learn, I definitely recommend, but if you're just trying to graduate, take someone else.
Dowell knows what he's talking about, but the class is hard work. He let us choose the % weight of our 2 midterms & final exam on our grade. Gives in-class hw to work on & go over as exam prep. Exams are half multiple choice, half written. Every midterm was curved to the highest grade in the class. Tbh I was happy to pass the class.
This professor does not assign homework. Everything was based on test. If you are good note taker and like sitting and listening for an extended period of time go for it. If he is the only professor available at the time recommend waiting time next semester if want to keep high GPA. He is hard work to get an "A" and getting an "A +" is unheard of
This professor has been by far the most difficult professor I have ever had. I'm a 3.7 GPA student & ended up with a D. I never knew my grade in his course as there is no structure explaining grading. The syllabus was not descriptive so I Never knew when to read the chapters. 3 Exams and 3 quizzes that are all written & T/F.
This professor is very smart. If you are an average student and do average work you will likely not pass the class. If you are a average student but a hard worker you might get a C or C-. If you are naturally smart let him know it as soon as possible on first test & class. Once he sees you as an average student you are not going to get an A or B+
I've had 100A, 113, 138, & 170. Received A-, B-, B- & B- respectively. Grades in all the courses except 100A were based on exams only. If you don't dedicate time outside of class to his materials you won't pass. Exam study guides do NOT give questions on the test. They cover concepts you should understand to perform well on the exams. Great prof.
Professor Dowell offers little to no resources for the students in his class, yet has high expectations compared to most other Economics Professors at Sacramento State University. The professor doesn't utilize Canvas for students to monitor and track their grades, and his feedback on assignments can often be hurtful.
He's a tough Professor. He seems to know what he is talking about, however he cannot convey information in a manner that the class will understand. If you want to keep your GPA, do not take a class offered by him or drop it immediately, I wish I did.
If you are looking for an engaging class with a professor that genuinely looks to support the growth of their students - look elsewhere. This is one of the most lecture heavy classes I've ever taken. His lectures are primarily through words - he doesn't like to rely on presentations or videos, which make his lectures even more difficult. Beware!
He gets a bad rap but honestly hes not that bad. Yeah he gets kind of mad if you ask dumb questions but I would too with some of the stuff people ask. Hes really smart and although his class was hard, I learned a lot from him. No homework, 3 exams and a cumulative final. Tests are based off of lectures and the readings he posts
If you are looking to experience hell, this is the professor you should take. Do not take him if you want to do well in class. I wish I listened to people who also reviewed him. He lectures well but that's all he does. He was making fun of his class for doing the worst on his quiz in 20 years of his experience. He does not care if you pass or fail!
Worst professor ever! I wish I never took him
Careless
If you really care about your GPA, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
Professor offers little to no resources for the students in his class, yet has high expectations compared to most other Economics Professors at Sacramento State University. The professor doesn't utilize Canvas for students to monitor and track their grades, and his feedback on assignments are often be hurtful.
Most of the people I know who took this class with another professors, loved it. This guy is hell, do not recommend him to anyone.
Professor is very Disrespectful and he does not care about student's success.
This class seemed to be easy until we have received his grading. Very harsh professor. Do not take him if you want to do well in School.
No extra credit. Nothing.
Avoid this teacher at all costs!
Lecture heavy, kinda boring but interesting if you're interested in the subject. Paper homework due every week. Online book/reading quiz every week. 3 Exams. Can use a 3x5 notecard on exams. Strict no phones/laptops/electronic policy. Homework & quizzes aren't too bad but the exams can be tough. Just review homework/quizzes and you'll be ok on exam
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He makes fun of his students for doing poorly, and his test are terrible. You can give an answer to a super vague question from something that you learned in lecture, yet it's wrong to him because you didn't quote a reading, despite that not being in the question.
Good Professor if you know economics, makes you work for a good grade, heavy on reading but I managed to pass econ 112 and 113 without reading a single page.
Attendance is mandatory simply because he never uses canvas. All his exams are lecture and assigned reading based. Intelligent professor, just not efficient at teaching. Really hard to take notes in class without having to stop him or slow him down. I can't imagine what his class is like for 100A or 145.
Do you think God stays in heaven because he too fears Dowell? Do not recommend taking him, even when asking him for help during office hours he was vague and not helpful. One essay, 3 written quizzes that are more like tests and a final. If possible do not take his class, he is a hard grader that does not give enough feed back to do better.
To simply put it, this guy is an extremely hard professor and this class is unavoidable for some majors. So if you happen to be the unlucky sod who has to take his classremember this: read the articles he puts on canvas, show up to class and take EXTENSIVE and DETAILED NOTES. Hang in there guys, its gonna be a rough semester.
BEWARE! I took a different class with him and it was tough but not as tough as the online class. I've never had a C grade and will soon graduate, but struggling to pass this class. He's been teaching for 20 years and expects the students to be as knowledgeable as he is. He seems to forget it's an undergraduate class. The ignorance is appalling.
Perfect example of a teacher set in their ways who has become lazy and unengaged. Students's questions are met with little to no help. The quizzes aren't graded promptly so you can't rely on them for study material. There are hundreds of pages of reading per midterm. Do not take his classes if at all possible.
Yea, this was not an easy class. He split the class into live and pre-recorded lectures. I prefered pre-recorded. There are weekly quizzes, two midterms, two papers, and the final exam. The weekly quizzes mostly focused on pre-recorded lectures. There is no textbook but he assigns a ton of papers to read. Poor guy must hate teaching on zoom.
This guy is the worst professor in the Econ department at Sac State. He is LAZY, doing the absolute bare minimum to get by. If you ask for help, expect a short and rude response basically telling you you're on your own to figure things out. He also has a nasally, irritating voice for what that's worth. Avoid at all costs if you want to enjoy econ.
Horrible professor, test questions nothing like the quizzes or class materials. Will purposely word questions to trick you. Majority of class never finished the exams, 40 multiple choice and 2 long written answers in only 70 minutes. This guy needs to be forced out of CSUS & retire. No compassion for students even during the pandemic. good luck.
Avoid this guy if you can. If it's online, then maybe you'll get by but I wouldn't take him in person.
He is tough but fair. Everyone complaining just wanted an easy "A" without actually working for it. He is lecture-heavy, and you have to do a lot of reading, but if you put forth an effort, you will pass with a decent grade.
As everyone have stated, he is a HORRIBLE teacher! I tried MULTIPLE STUDY methods for his class and is barely passing. He is rude to students as well. He put one student on the spot for no reason at all when the poor student only wanted a simple answer. I should have looked at the reviews before taking his class. Never taking his class again!!
Very tough course. No notes given, all based on what he is saying through out the lecture, Tough grader.
Took his course my first semester at Sacramento State. I thoroughly enjoyed his lectures, great personality and insight into the US economic history. Highly recommend taking his course. Wish I took more of his classes.
To keep it simple, if you enjoy data analysis, this class will help you become more competitive when applying for jobs. I recommend Dowell if you want to pursue a career in data analysis/similar field. He's tough, but view his course as "training." Don't take him if you don't know what you're doing, or if you just want to graduate, you won't pass.
Expiration date past due and needs to retire
overall, i don't think this class was too bad. 1 quiz a week (10 questions).. 2 essays that are 2 pages each. final is 4 questions, mostly about keynes and one question about a person from the first 7 weeks of class.
No matter what classes you see Dowell teaching, run. He does not make you feel welcome asking questions in class. His teaching style is outdated. Everyone in our class dislikes him. Does not elaborate on the ye' old English from the economists. he expects you to just know it. Professor already tenured so he doesn't care. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Worst professor. When asked questions, he would get mad. Graded harshly. Hard to take notes. Old Econ books which made no sense. Received C overall, final essay brought grade down to F. Do not take if you have to pass this class.
Interesting topics and an overall nice guy, but too old-fashioned in teaching. Barely touches canvas, responds late to emails and has his own grading spreadsheet, so you won't be able to see your grade until the semester is over. Lectures and readings are long/drawn out. Would avoid, but if you have to take him be prepared
Professor Dowell's class is a real challenge, but with effort, unstuck ai and careful studying, it's doable. Engage with his approach, avoid phones, and you'll learn a lot, even if the grading is tough.
Never tired so hard in a class and didn't think I was going to pass, I got a C thankfully.
I'd start thinking of new career paths before passing this class.
Don't even dare choosing this professor for your Econ class. This petty guy holds a copyright for whoever takes pictures and records his lectures. No makeup tests are allowed at any chance! Moreover, he's an old school who doesn't use ppt for lectures. You have to be lucky enough to have people you can trust on for notes otherwise you are doomed.
I dont know how the school hires but worst professor ever! Graded on 6 quizzes but two dropped but every two weeks and that only being in the grade book. Each quiz was weighted at 19% each. So you could only imagine how fast your grade will drop! DONT TAKE RUN AWAY. SAC STATE DO BETTER!
Took him for 1A and 1B and it was awful. 96% of your grade consists of 6 tests (lowest 2 dropped) and a final which can be a hit or miss as he has to curve each one due to the class not understanding it / bombing it. Good luck taking notes with his awful handwriting. Is possible to pass without going to lectures but takes a lot of effort
