Discussion based class. Never cracked the text.
Dubin is great. His class is discussion oriented and he is very knowledgable about the subject matter. His assignments are fair assessments of your understanding, consisting of take home essay m-term and final, and one paper. He was so good that after having him I changed my major to polisci at UW.

You will LOVE mr. Dubin. He is the best that MATC has to offer!
Professor Dubin is a very good teacher who ensures that the student has a solid comprehension of the subject matters. He is very reachable and always has time to assist you in understanding course requirements. He rates fairly and I wish he taught more classes. I always feel that I have learned and am never bored.
professor Dubin has a mastery of political theory that is matched by few. even at 8:00 am he brings the class to attention with intellectual depth, passion and razor sharp intelligence. if you could take only one professor this is it..always makes time for you and wants students to be more than ready to transfer to any college.
He definitely is passionate about his subject but his droning lectures were too much for me. And I never got ANY feedback on my papers or exams except one letter grade at the end of the class.
Amazing.
Really cool teacher, incredibly intelligent and really interesting (if you enjoy the subject). Very little homework, 2 exams and 1 paper for the whole course. Definitely recommended!
No words can say enough about Prof.DUBIN,his intelligent& very passionate about what he teaches. He makes you think, he wants your voice to be heard & most of all he motivates you to do well.I can truly say his the best teacher MATC has to offer. He really changed my life for the best and his the reason why I was ready to transfer.Dubin is the best:)
I had the good fortune of enrolling in a Pol-Sci class taught by Mike Dubin. The energy he puts forth in the classroom is contagious and was a key factor in my decision to finish my degree. Suffice it to know that he taught at Oxford before he finished his PhD at UW-Madison. MATC has a true gem and a genius in Mike Dubin.
I am a former MATC student; I took State & Local Government with Professor Dubin and registered for another of his classes the following semester (American History). Professor Dubin challenges his students, and expands his teaching far beyond the scope of the text. Prior to taking his course, I had minimal knowledge or interest regarding politica
Prof. Dubin's teaching facilitated the success of my education @ UW-Whitewater. He greatly enhanced my ability to critically analyze History, Government,& Policy. I've had some wonderful professors; NONE COMPARE! He thinks outside of the box, & challenges his students to do the same. He has passion for knowledge, & inspires great spirited debate!
Initially, I had trouble with Mr. Dubin, but throughout the semester, once I FINALLY asked for help, Mr. Dubin met with me weekly and helped me get on the same page as the rest of the class. I truly feel that his work to get students to think critically, and outside of their previous assumptions, is making a world of difference for transfer studen
this guy is the best and he loves robin trower
Great teacher who wants all students to get the most out of the class that they can. Teaches interesting material, connects the dots well, encourages use of the Socratic method and developing critical thinking skills. Definately the type of teacher you want if you are serious about learning and success in life and harder schools
women in history with dubin was a class that opened my eyes to so much. not only does he show his vested interest in the student's comprehension, but he is so enthusiastic about our learning. its refreshing to have a teacher like Dubin
Legendary comes to mind when Dubin's name is spoken.YOU benefit from his courses.A master of the Socratic Method-he knows how to make you think.Such a performance and display of immense talent/skill is a rarity. His flawless rhetoric blends topics & yields comprehension via discussion.Dubin is in demand-I want human rights/new courses from Dubin!
He is the best teacher at MATC. He is very understanding as well as very easy going. It was the only one of the classes i did not get stressed out about. You never use the text book though, so don't bother purchasing it.
Mr. Dubin not only is an amazing professor but the hottest professor I've ever known. He's not only clear but also articulate and he rules!!! He makes complicated issues seem easy and accessible. HE ROCKS!!!!
If you want to learn pure facts about about American History I would not recommend this class because he teaches very little but lectures mostly about critical interpretations. Do not buy the book because he never uses it. This is a pretty easy A class. Good luck friends!
World in the 20th century was a great class to take. I can see that some students, those without philosophy or history knowledge, would have trouble keeping up. If you do have knowledge in these areas and are active in the class there is a lot to learn. The style used by Dr.Dubin gives you a lot of knowledge if you apply yourself.
My first class with Professor Dubin was International Relations my first semester at MATC and I absolutely loved it! Not only did it spark my interest but I was able to use critical thinking skills and not just remember dates and facts. Because of that class, I have taken a couple of Dubin's other classes which have furthered my interest in the a
Best professor i have ever had, always has the ability to keep students intrigued and interested...knows more about the subjects he teaches than anyone i've ever taken before...Dubin is AWESOME!!!
great teacher. Highly recommend the class women in history. We wathced some awesome movies.
Awesome teacher. He is very articulate and knowledgable in politcal theory. If you plan on forging ahead in an University then you need to take his class. Best teacher I had so far. A++++++++
By far the best teacher in MATC, truely an asset for the students. Remarkable teacher, take him if you are truely into learning. He will make you think critically.
easy!
I took World in the 20th Century with him, being a Rhodes Scholar, he's very well educated and his lectures are wonderful, if a bit mumbo jumbo. He is a bit scatter brained, but loves when you show interest and critical thinking. Great teacher.
I took women in history with him, and it was the best class i have ever taken. He is very smart, enjoys critical thinking and encourages class discussion. papers were not that hard, and if you try a little bit it should not be that hard to get an A. attendance is a really good idea, but this is a really good teacher and you should want to attend.
I changed my major after this class. It was easy, he's involved, and it truly got your mind turning.
The way in which he explains directions for his assignments is not very clear. It seems as when you ask a question that he feels you should know the answer to he would like to make you feel stupid instead of just answering the question. Often times he is very sarcastic and quite rude to the students. His attitude for a college professor is awful!
great teacher. very smart, and knolegeable about the subject matter. probably the best teacher i have ever had, and definately the most enjoyable class i have taken. easy if you do the work and go to class. any class he teaches is going to be good.
Loved this class. Very laid back teaching style. What's to more of what you think about things than facts and figures! Really interesting guy!
To current date the BEST teacher I ever had. He isear, concise and if you pay attention to his lectures you will do fine. Would ave beice to use the book but otherwise absolutely no complaints. If you want a good history tacher,Professor Dubin is your man. Thanks for the A+ grade!!!!
participate and contribute to the class, and not only will you learn things, challenge yourself, but you will also excel in this class. not hard if you go to most of the classes. great teacher.
Knows his stuff, but the way he teaches the class is unorganized. Hard to take notes. He is an easy grader though.
I 'm walking out of this class better educated and more confident.NOT A FACT MEMORIZATION LECTURER!I recommend Mr.Dubin for those interested in learning how to think and talk about current and past events in an intelligent and relevant manner.Come to class, take notes, think deeply, and speak your mind!A great professor for those love to debate!
Don't take him. He is very unorganized, scattered brained, doesn't email you back, doesn't write any notes, unclear with what is do and when. I missed a class because I was in the hospital.I missed a handout and emailed him and he never replied. I asked him at next class for it and he laughed, made me feel dumb and feel like a really bad student.
Easily the best professor I've had in my college career. Dr. Dubin encourages you not to just learn what events occurred and when they occurred, but why they occurred and the repercussions of these events. I've always had some interest in history, but Dr. Dubin took our class to a new level in terms of using critical thinking to understand events
Loved the critical discussion, truly a teacher who cares about his students. This is the best teacher I have ever had.
He was very considerate and nice! His feedback was very helpful in and outside of class. Plus, Michael played an instrumental role in helping me mold my statement to UW Madison which made a huge impact. This helped me get into my number one school!
This is a class where if you show up, do the work, you will receive the grade. History is a difficult topic for me and others. But he turned this classroom making American History not only engaging, but relating topics to one you would have never thought of & giving options when it came to papers. It truly made American History class worthwhile.
Dublin was an okay professor. He would often end up re teaching his last lecture. He clearly knew what he was talking about and was very intelligent but he didn't like other people's views and often shut down students who thought differently from him. I got an easy A in this class. He exempts you from the final if you have good attendance.
I was in Mr. Dubin's World in 20th Century this semester and he was a great teacher. His lectures were interesting and he is very knowledgable. I would definitely take one of his classes again. :)
Professor Dubin was very helpful and I would encourage others to take this class.
Nice guy, easy grader
He is smart and knows what hes talking about. His lectures can be long and he tends to repeat himself, a lot. Great professor, but not for everyone.
I have taken two classes with Professor Dubin, World in the 20th Century and 1865 - to the present and have really enjoyed both. Professor Dubin is extremely knowledgeable, he encourages his students to think outside the box when it comes to history and wants his students to do well.
Super easy grader. Only a couple of papers. No final if you show up to class.
helpful teacher. easy class.
repeated the same thing over and over. he just rambles
Dubin is challenging. He does not dum it down. His views are explosive and he opens your mind. Anyone that does not get this is too ignorant to have him. Truly amazing the best teacher I have had.
Sometimes people do not give History teachers enough credit. However, Dr. Dubin is an amazing teacher. I have so much respect for him. I did not always agree with his opinions, but I still have a lot of respect for him. As long as you show up for class and participate. You will enjoy this class.
Dr. Dubin is a good teacher. The only reason I didn't give him a great rating is the level of difficulty. Which is none. I never felt challenged enough. All you really have to do is show up. You write one two page paper. If you get an A you only have to write one essay for the take home exam. After that a final paper on a aricle/book 3-6 pages.
A wonderful teacher and truly understands how his students are going through during semester. Just come to class, write down your notes, and papers. Be focus, sometimes he goes fast on his lectures.
Loved the class. We discussed politics and history. I learned a lot about Plato and got some great background perspective on feminism. I would take a class with him again!
I really enjoyed this class. He talks about the founding of America like he was there. It got a bit political at times, but I appreciate a good debate. He plays devil's advocate to challenge your views and if you have an open mind he will teach you a lot. I hope to take another of his classes in the future.
Professor Dubin was truly inspirational. He really tries to understand and connect with students. The best teacher I have had so far. I am going to take another class with him. Others should as well.
Dubin cares about us. He understands his students and their other classes and work.. also he has awesome lectures
Dubin loves history and makes it fun for the class.
He bills himself as a critical-thinking teacher instead of a fact-memorization teacher. What this meant, at least in my class, was that we analyzed the perspectives of 3 white thinkers for the first 8 weeks of class. He was repetitive and the class participation was mostly trying to guess what his questions were asking.
Dubin is the best teacher I have had here or the U.W.
A legendary professor Dubin makes you feel ikeyou are in the revolution.
Ya, I agree that Dubin has awesome classes. But I got a chance to work on an honors project and he is just as good or better at a one to one level. He knows so many people at famous colleges around the country he put me in touch. Even in Europe Dubin had he talk to some cool woman at Oxford regarding my project in feminism.
Dubin is pasionate about his job and a relatively easy grader with 2 Papers for the entire semester.
Dubin was rude. I took American History with him last semester, he verbally attacked me and another student when I asked what the were at because we were in week 13 and had no grade. He was BOGUS. I was very respectful, and like I said he verbally attacked me and my classmate. Would never take his class if it wasn't for the unbelievably easy A.
Easy easy class. He knows his stuff and loves talking history. If you need an easy class and easy credit then take this class. All you have to do is show up
Amazing, Dubin makes you think critically. He is different and some o the material is difficult but a fair grader. The class is like a family.
Dubin is cool. He makes points and comes back them. He teaches thinking.
I told Dubin that he is the most distinctive professor we have. I agree with some of the earlier students who said that he makes you feel like you are there. He does not have people memorize dates and names. He make it real so that you know Lincoln and King
Michael is an amazing history professor I have taken multiple classes with him and every time in class I learned something new. No other professor I have had has taken so much care to make sure their students are doing well and know the content that is being taught. He is an excellent teacher and a great guy.
Avoid Michael Dubin's classes If you are too conditioned by our educational system to learn via the Socratic method, or if you are too immature or rigid to cope with having your arguments challenged logically. Do take his classes if you are open to learning by engaging in thoughtful dialogue rather than memorization of facts you will forget later.
Dubin gives good feedback and helps you think critically. He is an insightful genius but he's nice and funny too. Loved the class.
I have mixed feelings about the Modern US class I took with him last semester. I was left wondering what my grade was going to be for the entire semester. When I missed two classes due to illness, he was almost impossible to get a hold of. Especially when I missed a day discussing an upcoming paper. I had to email him twice just to get a response.
American History 1865-present. Participation and attendance matters. A few papers to be done for the class but taking notes during class really helps.
Brilliant lecturer. As some had said earlier you have to put effort into class. His Socratic c style helps you learn how to think
I love the way he put's you in the mindset of Benjamin Franklin. It's like you are there. Amazing amount of knowledge. Best Prof yet.
not a big history person so the lectures are boring to me. but show up cause if go to 90% of classes dont have to take final. graded on attendance and 3 papers which if you do I'm sure you'll get at least a A- without paying attention to anything that happens in class. very easy course and nice guy. some history gurus love him a lot
super funny guy. really cares about his students. He is the chairman of the department. He wants students to write well.
He makes history accessible. He gives you the context and theories behind it. Don't worry about the difficulty, fait grader.
Truly great professor. Great guy. If you have chance to take Dubin do it. He really gets people involved.
Really deep Professor. This class was muchmore than I thought it would be. Really brought it together.
This class penetrated to interesting issues. A thematic teacher.
I thought thr class was difficut but Prof Dubin helprf me through it. He's really helpful. I learned to write better also.
This man is amazing!!! (Took his class Fall 2019 but never got to write a review) he makes history very engaging and he talks informally about the subject, makes the class feel less strict and more fun! Definitely take him if you need a history class, and dont worry about hw, theres like 5 short papers I wrote through the class.
Doesnt submit grades when assignments are due
I love the remote lectures. He makes them fun. I never though about history this way. He calls it the zeitgeist
If you want a good history class, this is the instructor to take. Mike is very easy to talk to & always willing to talk about the topics. He explains things in a way that makes them very easy to understand, doesn't just recite the material but makes it engaging. If you're willing to do the work, there is a ton to get out of his class.
Mr. Dubin teaches History in an interesting way. He stresses narratives and insight. He looks at the big picture.
Great Professor. Go to class. Makes history relevant entertaining and fun. I took his three courses offered. Lectures are great, you won't want to miss any.
Took one of his classes, and ended up taking the other two. He is a terrific professor and emphisizes critical thinking skills while teaching history so that you understand not only what happened but also the why and how.
I love the way he brings things together and uses insight. Best Professor ever.
class goes one of three ways 1)engagement with the rest of the class, asking questions of us and listening 2)watching a video inclass 3)nonstop talking and rambling about subjects, while spending literally 10mins bouncing between decades to "explain" his point this guy likes to talk, he's passionate ill give him that, but he talks waaaay too much
Professor Dubin was engaging and insightful. While the material was not always easy he went out of his way to make himself available for help. He always let people turn in a draft of their papers before the final version was due. I loved the material esp. on the sexual revolution.
He loves active learning and wants everyone involved.
Dubin was amazing. Great speaker but also wanted our feedback. He always brought great ideas ans showed how they were debated in American history. Huge on critical thinking. He taught at a high level but graded fairly.
I did not learn anything in this class, it was an online class where I only saw the guy once. We wrote 4 papers that were pretty easy as long as you answered all the criteria he posted. Its an easy class but if you want to learn something don't take the online version.
This Professor really mad me think outside the box. He has the "wow" factor.
I love this class. He makes History fun. We learn themes not just dates. Dubin talks a lot about JFK and Obama. He's inspired by them and loves the it factor.
Dubin is hilarious. He had me in fits of laughter for an entire class. He's like a history comedian, and a good one at that. He inspires the students to discuss topics passionately. However, you will have to be patient because he goes slow and often repeats information. Participate in classroom discussions to get the most out of his class.
He wasn't great online. I don't think he's very tech savy. We only had a couple of graded things (couple of discussion posts, one doc review, and two term papers). You could complete the graded assignments without reading any of the materials. The textbook was from a website. The rental was optional. There were no lectures recorded by him.
Dubin is awesome. His range and insight are just amazing. Take him in person if you get a chance
Dubin is awesome. He is one of the funniest and realest teachers I've ever had. There are only a few assignments throughout the class, and majority of the class is spent on in-person discussions. Just participate and complete the few major assignments, and you will get an A.
Legendary. Dubin is the guy. He is deep and knowledgeable. His lectures are exciting. I've never seen better. Yet he's friendly approachable and down to earth.
I loved his lectures. He is deeply engaging. He changed my thinking and view of Amerrican History and I am grateful for that.
His lectures were always enjoyable and assignments were never too difficult
My favorite professor ever. He's life changing. Legendary
Generally, a very chill guy, gave great feedback, and lectures were overall fairly interesting for anyone interested in polisci. Sometimes a boring lecturer, misused economic terms (capitalism, socialism, etc.) frequently when the topic came up, but largely quite an interesting person with solid perspectives.
I was disappointed because of only four graded assignments the whole semester, none of which were based on the lectures. He never put grades into blackboard. In my case he gave me a grade on a post it note. The lectures, you might as well not show up besides to get attendence points. He rambles the whole time and I ended up doing other coursework.
Top notch. Really cares about students. Takes awhile to get used to. But worth it. Wants you to think outside the box.
Dubin is my favorite professor. He is so engaged with his students. You can tell he really cares about them.
Amazing speaker. He loves teaching and students. He gets you into the subject.
In class he just yaps, and the essays he assigns are rarely related to the lectures
Dubin gives personality to History. Fun class
Professor Dubin makes history come alive with his engaging lectures and thought-provoking discussions. The class is not too difficult, and Unstuck study proved to be a helpful tool for preparing for exams. Definitely take this course if you're interested in American politics and history.
Great Professor!!!! The classes fill very fast. Mike does a good job of trying to let as many as he can off the waiting lists. Call him or meet him in his office if you have any questions.
Dubin is an outstanding teacher. Very lenient but intellectually raises curiosity.
