Michael Edwards is quite funny and entertaining. However, he cannot explain subject matter in a clear and understandable way. Good luck deciphering his quizzes and tests...
What is he even saying!? Not only can he not explain something clearly, he can't even speak clearly. Too busy making jokes and doing that weird cackle noise. I feel like I am back in middle school in his class.

He's entertaining but I don't always understand what he means when he is teaching. Things are not always clear.
Great class very helpful. I thought he explained things very well. Test are very straight forward and no tricks to them. Like he says, if you know your stuff you will ace the test.
Very Clear. Cant hate the man cause' he has an accent, hes still very understandable. Easy A if you read his required 5 pages a day and come to class. He tells you whats going to be on tests and they are easy anyway.Students should spend more time paying attention to info opposed to discriminating based on speech. And Jokes? It makes learning fun
I like this professor very much he is funny and makes the class interesting
really wants to help students do well. Takes things pretty slowly, but is not always very clear. His tests are generally pretty basic and if you just do all the work you will do well in the class
He is a great prof. He is available if you need help and can explain the material clearly. I would recommend taking his course.
This prof. is great!!! I would def. take him if you are a non chem major having to take chemistry! He helps a lot and really understands you!!! He is like one of us!! =)
He was very interested in students and very active. It was not a boring class and I actually enjoyed going. Very fun!!
He is very energetic and really wanted to help the students.
Great teacher!! Really cares about teaching the material clearly. If you ever have questions he is extremely helpful and genuinely cares.
He is a good teacher and explains the material well for the most part. However, he is very hard to understand at times and has a horrible temper.
would be a decent teacher, but has the worst temper, is extremely hard to get ahold of, and is a huge jerk. Started almost crying in class because he taught us how to do moles..then 10 minutes later had an attitude towards the class. Really weird guy. One of the worst profs i've ever had.
Unless you love environmental science already, don't take this class with him. He doesnt make sense and the assignments have barely have anything to do with the material learned, but they're 50% of the grade.
Although there is no attendence taken during lecture, he does give quizzes, but usually he warns you about them. Also, he is very nice about answering questions and gives very clear and easy to understand instructions. The guy is crazy so expect to laugh sometime in class.
I had him first for Environmental Science, which was a rather small class, and I liked his teaching. The material was challenging, and he was honest about that. But then I had him for chem, and he seems like a different person. Great in SPEA, not so much in chemistry, in my personal opinion. He seems more passionate about his SPEA class.
Definitely not my favorite. He's a really interesting individual, okay sense of humor, really knows and cares about the subject...however, he has some anger issues. Hes irritable and the class is harder than with other profs. hes a bit hard to understand and the expensive book that you're supposed to buy, you might use twice. Wouldn't advise.
Wouldn't advise taking this class. I think hardly anyone ended up with an A. He is a funny guy and makes things interesting, but not the best at explaining things well. If you don't have a background in chemistry beware. Or go to the AIs and they can help you.
Has some ridiculous test questions, true false or neither. Also, sometimes he admits to not even having the correct answer within the choices, and you must pick the "best choice"....not recommended.
This professor did not show up for the final exam for his class. This should be enough to explain the type of professor that he is.
Cool guy he makes the class pretty interesting and he's pretty funny. He has the tightest grading scale in the world (only 100 points) so it's a hard class but if you're interested in the topic you'll enjoy the class.
Hard to understand. Impossible to get ahold of. Yells and freaks out when someone talks during lecture and then the whole class has to liste to his lecture about respect. His handwriting is HORRIBLE. Doesn't post powerpoints. Treats us like we are two. Calls out students. Makes tests really hard. Is not clear. I had to go by the book completely.
I don't really understand why people say he has a bad temper. He would call people out if they were talking enough to be distracting, and actually I appreciated that. He genuinely cares about getting your money's worth at IU and teaches well. He does have an accent, but he's easy to understand if you listen. Very funny, nice guy!
high on his own horse; wants us to know how much schooling he's had and why that makes him better (lame but true) treats his students like children. Doesn't post slides, goes through them too fast, and is inconsistent; he contradicts his own directions, confuses his own key terms & definitions, & won't give full explinations to questions/concerns.
grades way too hard and the info is convuluded
Did not like this guy. Yells in to the microphone which is pretty annoying at 8am on a Friday. Doesn't teach you anything about the lab during the lab lecture but you still have to go and wait until he yells "CLICKER TIME" to get your points.
Do not take this class unless you have had chemistry recently, there are a lot of calculations that I only knew how to do because I take chem classes for my bio major. This professor is scattered and not clear. He doesn't post slides and offers no review for any exam. Try and take a different prof.
I didn't learn much, if anything, from Prof Edwards. Most of his lectures consisted of irrelevant stories or lectures on how students should live their lives. He was extremely loud and always wasted valuable class time.
I strongly beleive that the purpose of an into environmental studies course is to give students a basic understanding of how various awe-inspiring natral systems work and to leave the student with a stronger sense of our connection with/ impact upon our environment. This course should be called Chemistry lab tequniques for environmental chemists.
Very nice guy and knows a lot about environmental science. He doesn't post his slides so you are actually forced to go to class and take notes (if you don't like this then get over it its college not high school)
Nice. Yells into microphone. Very annoying in lecture.
His speaking is not clear what so ever. He spits a lot and all of his powerpoints, which are not online, are irrelevant to the tests and book notes. There are no review sessions and he doesn't help when questions are asked. The class is not mandatory, but he does have random quizzes over material he claims we have studied. Find a different prof.
SWITCH NOW! this professor is the worst ive had since at iu. his speaking is unclear and his thoughts are SO scattered. He doesnt know how to explain concepts in a clear and understandable way. I have had to 100% self teach myself this course with the text book. This is a 100 level class and this professor makes it so hard.
Loved this professor. Wish i could take all my science classes with him.
Very friendly man. Kept me interested in the class. Was very fair and made the tests very basic.
If you read the book, you will be fine. He usually lectures using notes but you have to take your own. His tests and quizzes are quite fair, if you've studied.
I had a terrible experience with Prof Edwards. I started his class with so much enthusiasm for the subject but found his way of teaching extremely difficult to understand. He also had a tendency to exaggerate facts and expected tests to be taken according to the facts he provided as opposed to the ones in the book.
Seemed like he wasn't very organized. His lectures were so scattered and I was lost half the time. Ended up learning more in C103 than C101 because he just never explained anything well and the pace was too fast, even for him it seemed. He has an accent but that didn't bother me.
Absolutely terrible. Very difficult to understand and his tests are bullsh*t. Also, he scheduled our final for Friday night right before Christmas. Take his class if you'd like to hurt your GPA, otherwise I'd highly recommend staying far away from him
WORST professor that I have had since coming to IU. He does not explain concepts clearly AT ALL, very scatter brained. Lecture= waste of time. I have had to teach myself everything through the book. avoid this professor at all costs. TERRIBLE. he knows what he is talking about but does not efficiently teach. makes a 100 level way too difficult.
TERRIBLE, worst professor i have had at IU. Makes a 100 level way too difficult. Scatter brained and does not explain anything clearly. You have to teach yourself by reading everything from the book. overall awful professor, lecture is a waste of time. unless you are willing to teach yourself, avoid. skip and go to 103, better luck that way.
honestly one of the worst professors I've had here at IU….this is my third year. i was expecting this 100 level class to come somewhat easy…….. NOOO he is honestly so hard to understand, and NEVER stays on topic. he says he writes his tests clearly… they are not clear at all, if you can i WOULD TAKE THIS CLASS ELSEWHERE and or with a diff. prof.
Professor Edwards is unclear, makes the material more complicated, and does not prepare his students for his tests. The quizzes are in class way too often, and the tests do not reflect the quiz questions whatsoever. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Edwards' class could not be any easy than he makes it, its literally drawn out for you and if you fail its because you were too lazy to go to class or pay attention. One of the best and most helpful professors I've had since being here at IU
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. SPEA should replace him.
If you are planning on taking E 272, avoid Professor Edwards! Unless you have taken chemistry recently, then go ahead. The course is heavy on confusing equations. The professor is difficult to understand and you must attend class to get lecture notes because he doesn't post PowerPoints online. He relies on his TAs for office hours. Not very helpful
He constantly gets off topic, tells jokes that are not funny. He gets confused with his own teaching and confuses the students. He attempted to teach scientific notion and messed it completely up. I am disappointed.
Why is this guy a professor ? If there was another professor teaching this course I would switch. I am honestly lost when he starts lecturing. His method is so confusing.
Very nice and his jokes are funny and nice every once in a while but he gets off topic far too often. Our TA has corrected him solving different equations multiple times making me think how am I supposed to learn if he doesn't even do it correctly? Very scatter brained.
Very hard to follow. Avoid at all costs. He is not clear, doesn't cover all material he tests on, and he's very disrespectful at times. I regret not researching him before.
I am currently taking his class and I am very dissatisfied with his teaching methods. His quizzes and CALM hw do not always match up according to his tests, and sometimes makes the tests in a manner in which you need to know the most difficult thing to even be able to answer a simple question, resulting in mass confusion when it comes to a test.
Definitely not my favorite prof. I loved the subject material, but he was not a fantastic teacher. While his lectures were enjoyable, he seemed to be more of an entertainer than a teacher. He was often unclear, unapproachable, and sometimes contradicted himself. Very tough grader. Took off point if the format wasn't perfect. Try to get another prof
He's an awesome professor. Always making jokes and laughing and singing and having fun. He goes slow so you can write notes and answers any question. He says even if it's a "stupid question" to ask anyways. Really great professor
Super unclear. Often contradicted himself and once gave me the wrong answer on a test. Would not recommend
Prof. Edwards class was a rough experience. He was a really cool guy and is a great person, but he was way to confusing during class. He easily gets off topic and it so picky with the assignments that its impossible to give him what he wants. The tests seemed to be full of trivia that he thought was important. He never posted grades either.
Avoid at all cost unless you want to hurt your gpa. Find a different prof at all cost.
He is a great guy, but tries to entertain the class more than teach the class. My AI for my discussion section always says that he teaches things wrong or forgets to teach important things. You'll do fine in this class as long as you read before the lecture, go to the discussion sections, and get help from your AI if needed.
Made lectures really confusing and got go topic a lot. Pick a different professor unless you want to ruin your gpa
Edwards was super funny and seems like a great guy. He knows his stuff and is able to teach well. He answers questions without hesitation. Easy A if you know your basic chemistry and are willing to study a little bit for the exams. If you study the discussion worksheets for the exams, then you'll pass.
He never answers questions that students ask in class, he only makes you feel stupid for asking them.
Professor Edwards was very unorganized. During his lectures he just read off of slides that were from the book and was always saying how he would be tricking students on the tests. For a course that is supposed to be introductory, he makes it way too difficult and doesn't seem to want success from his students.
I don't think he was a great professor because he prioritizes being funny over teaching. Fortunately, I have taken chemistry before to not need to pay attention to his lectures or read the textbook in class. However, for students who will take C103, just know that he's not good at explaining concepts, reads from his powerpoints, and is very unclear
Professor Edwards is very unorganized and hard to understand from time to time. You can tell he enjoys being in class and teaching because he likes to joke around a lot. Seems like a nice guy, just not the best professor. Be sure to look at homework frequently on Pearson because due dates are not in canvas or talked about in class.
Edwards enjoys the subject and tries to make it interesting, but tries way too hard to be funny. He cares, but is not the best professor; gets off topic frequently, not approachable, difficult grader. Not well organized; the AIs have to correct his mistakes in discussion occasionally. Study for the tests with discussion materials.
This professor is not approachable at all. He made fun of students for asking questions that he thought were easy, and never fully answered the question. Do not take this class, unless you want to ruin your GPA in a five credit course. Steer clear my friends.
Professor Edwards was not good. He often confused me. He doesn't directly answer questions. He talks in circles because he likes to hear himself talk. Thinks he's funny, but not really. He takes pictures from the book, reads them and moves on. You have to read and/or teach yourself to do well in this class because he doesn't help much. Not a fan.
Prof. Edwards I would say is a good person outside of the classroom but as a professor he is probably the worst professor i have ever had. I would study and do the readings and somehow still did not understand what was on the exam. He is very unclear of what you are looking and the exams are near impossible to get a good grade on.
He is horrible! He says things that aren't true, like "1% of people in the US go to college" and won't believe otherwise. His homework is pretty tough and a lot of people didn't get it. He puts A. As false and B. As true like he's trying to intentionally mess you up on tests. He also said the EPA (which he worked for) isn't part of the federal gov
Good guy, not a good teacher. The lectures are all over the place without slides posted online, he speaks in hypotheticals and isn't focused on student success - he just wants an audience. Brutal grader without the ability to teach subject material well, and often contradicts himself - making exams that much harder. Not a good experience.
He's a very unorganized professor and goes off topic during lectures. He pulls his powerpoint slides right off of the publishers website. I wouldn't recommend taking Chemistry with this professor, you'll highly regret it.
Professor Edwards is very nice and has good intentions however he does a poor job at explaining concepts. If you have him as a professor ALWAYS read the textbook and watch Khan Academy videos and thats how you will get an A in the class. If you have previous knowledge in chemistry that helps and if you do the worksheets you will do well! Testseasy
Good intentions and cares but very disorganized and confusing . He will make you laugh though!
As a freshman, this course was difficult but in retrospect it wasn't that bad. Edwards has a great sense of humor, and always tries to lighten the mood. Sometimes he had difficulty explaining a concept, but he got around to it eventually. He preaches about working hard and studying 24/7, but he's right.
Lecture is hard to follow. He goes very quickly, and sometimes messes up examples in class. Discussion for the class is where I learn everything. You have to read and turn in all your homework or your screwed. Tests aren't too hard but that's because the AI's write them.
Professor Edwards had very confusing lectures. He was constantly saying the wrong thing, and was horrible at answering student questions. His slides are straight from the book, which make it easy to go back and study if you're confused. Your AI will probably help you much more than he will. Tests are written partially by him and partially by AI's.
Prof Edwards is one of those professors that you like because he is funny but you hate because he is an awful professor. Almost always messes up in lecture and just confuses the students more. He is very very conceited about his phD in chemistry and will let you know he has it almost every class. Cracks some jokes but overall should not teach chem.
This was the worst class I have taken thus far. The homework assignments are heavy papers and math assignments worth little points. The exams are all based on lectures, so no need for a textbook. Try to memorize your lecture notes all you want, but you will never know what the exam will actually test you on. Take someone else.
Dr. Edwards is a nice person, but is not a great professor. He goes off on tangents and I always wonder what just happened when I leave his class. He focuses way too much on chemistry and math (for environ. sci.) and does not explain it well. His powerpoint slides are confusing. He has a tendency to make stuff up. He kept missing office hours.
Prof. Edwards is honestly a good prof. He goes out of his way to provide lots of examples of lecture concepts, and these examples are often straight from the hw. Tests were always fair, no curve, 25 MC q's. HW is MasteringChem, stay on top of it. He was always easy to understand, accessible, and nice. C103 requires lots of work but is a fair class.
Many lectures were used to focus on one example problem, which he usually solved incorrectly. I left class many times feeling like I learned nothing. The only reason I passed was because of the AIs. Would not recommend.
His lectures were not worth going to since he never really taught.
Professor Edwards is very funny but he is absolutely ridiculous in lectures. I mean this man literally goes over pictures in the actual book and doesnt dive into concepts. He does several examples of ONE type of problem and makes fun of people who asks questions in class. I wouldnt recommend this man. You almost have to teach yourself material.
Professor Edwards tried to make class fun, but didn't really succeed. He talked too much about irrelevant things, but I will say that he was willing to go over practice problems in lecture over and over and over again. Lectures drag, though, because of his roundabout way of explaining and the fact that he reads off of the slides. Gotta attend class
Edwards is interesting. He used to work for the EPA and has lots of knowledge in the actual field. As far as his teaching ability... nah. If he puts a "diagram" on the board, it looks like, and is explained like the ramblings of a schizophrenic. The tests aren't super consistent with what you have learned. If you're taking E272, know conversions.
He seemed to have no idea what he was talking about half the time. He'd go on tangents that were irrelevant to subject matter and overll, inspired me to switch majors away from Environmental Science and SPEA as a whole. Definitely pass.
Prof Edwards was funny sometimes but honestly one of the rudest professors I've met at IU. He would basically shame people for asking questions in class (mostly because he didnt know how to answer them). Not a good professor and sometimes difficult to understand
