He literally reads off the slides for his lecture, which makes the class a bit boring. He takes his homework questions from online so you can practically google them to find the answers. The research paper for this class isn't difficult, just long, but the tests are hard. He also doesn't give extra credit but a C is a 65 and above.
If you show up to lecture and pay a moderate amount of attention you'll probably do fine. He covers a lot of info each class but posts his powerpoints online. Focus on what he says (he gives some tips to understand things easier). 50/50 for people showing up to class. 2 exams 40%, final 30%, 3 Quizzes 15%, research paper 15%
Very nice guy. The lectures can get boring, unless your interested in the topic. Test account for a lot of your grade. Don't really need the textbook, you can find the previous edition online for free. Not a bad professor, he is not out to fail his students
Talks SO FAST to the point where I can't even keep up. He gives 3-100 question online quizzes that take forever to do. Don't recommend.
This guy is the man. Great at explaining concepts and makes the class extremely practical. People crying about 100 question quizzes, but they are very helpful, easy grade boosters, and you're in college to do work and learn. Definitely take him.
I failed intro to microeconomics and had to retake for major credit and get at least a C. Professor Elgawly helped me become interested and actually comprehend the subject matter of the class. Lectures aren't mandatory as long as you read, exams are fairly easy, and 3 100 question quizzes help bring up your class average! I would recommend!!
Didn't go to any of the classes and got a B. Possible A class if you really tried. Course (for Spring 2017) consists of 3 100 question quizzes on myEconLab, 2 midterms, and a final. Very nice, approachable professor. Exams were very basic and covered main topics. One of the better economics professors I've had.
he's really a good professor I learned a lot. If you know the "HW" and practice them, you will survive. It's little bit challenging class.
He's one of the best professors for Micro. Posts slides on sakai and explains the content using real world examples which help alot. He's overall a great professor. Gives 3 100-question quizzes on Launchpad, 2 in class midterms and a final and that's it so if you study his slides you'll do pretty well. WOULD RECOMMEND!!
Elgawly is great, I barely ever went to class, he posted his power points to Sakai. 6 tests, 3 online, 3 in-class including the finals. The online tests are worth about 36% of your grade and are easy A's. The in-class tests require some studying by just reading the textbook
Great lecturer, exams are fair game, and the quizzes are very helpful grade boosters. It is pretty important to go to lecture since he will mention various tidbits of information that aren't in the textbook. Very good professor and would definitely take him again in a heartbeat.
I had him for Macro. Loved him! Ended the class with an A. I went in for office hours all the time. But I also barely went in for lectures. I ONLY studied the powerpoints and did really well. He will help you with everything! His tests are aligned with his ppts. Switch into his class if you have the opportunity.
Loved the class! Had no prior knowledge about many topics and he made them very relatable and important. Isn't 100% necessary to go to class but he does go over topics very well and slides in a couple jokes too! I felt that he made the class simple and the 3 100 question online quizzes help your grade. Put a little effort, and you get an A.
Literally the only class I got an A in. TAKE PROFESSOR ELGAWLY FOR MICRO IF YOU CAN!! Will definitely help you and breaks down the content so well. I had zero prior knowledge in this course. If you want an easy A and actually learn something, he's your guy! Just show up to class and you'll do well
Although the exam is fair, he will not curve the exam. And If you ask him a lot of questions by using email, he will say it is ok to help you. But he will not help you by using email.
Don't listen to guy before me. This class is fair and easy. Graded on 3 online quizzes(that you can google) and 3 exams. Attendance not mandatory but if you go to class you don't need to study much. Ppts are put online. Very sweet and can be funny. No extra credit but that is not unreasonable if you pay attention. Overall good class!
Professor Elgawly is a great professor for Micro. The classes were late at night on college ave so I ended up skipping most lectures, but still ended up with a solid A. 3 online quizzes are 36% of your grade and the answers are online. The exams are fair and he reviews before them so you know what to study for. He's great at explaining things.
Got an A in the class. Only studying I did was showing up to class. Lectures may be a bit boring, but he really tells you what you need to know on exams if you show up. I just looked at my notes before tests to get A's on them. Online homework is easy, he's lets you work together on them, and they boost your grade. Nice guy as well.
Great professor! 3 online quizzes which you can find all the answers online. If you go to class it will help as he literally tells you what is going to be on the exams. The book does help to understand the concepts. Really cares about his students and offers a lot of help if you to office hours. Would take this class again with him in a heartbeat.
amazing lecturer. if you pay attention, you will learn everything in class and be prepared for the exams. super understanding, and answers any question you ask. Everyone in my class got one question wrong on the exam because of a miscommunication and he gave the points back. also curves up in class grades by a few points.
Lectures go through the slides which are posted online but a lot of times lectures include questions and topics not on the slides which show up on exams. If you don't go to class or read the book you wont get above a 70 on the exams. He also explains the topics well so going to class is definitely required to get above a B.
Great Professor. If you attend class and study a little for exams class is an easy B+/A
Elgawly is a great microeconomics professor. His lectures are clear and to the point, and he gives great examples to go over the concepts and help you to learn. No homework in the class other than 3 online quizzes, one per unit.
Professor Elgawly is a great professor for those who have absolutely no knowledge of economics going into the class. He explains everything as many times as needed, and his exams are very fair.
Where do I start, Professor Elgawly might just be one of the nicest professors I've had at Rutgers. Great lecturer and a caring professor to his students. Took him for International Econ and class had a lot thrown at us but Professor Elgawly made the class a lot easier. The first exam out of the three was the hardest. Curves too. TAKE HIM!
I loved going to class because he lectures a lot about the ways microeconomics is relevant in everyday life and he tries to give unique perspectives to social/economic issues. Only down side is he had the tendency to breeze through the material that was actually relevant for the exam. Definitely need to study the slides to do well in this class.
Mike is such a terrific and genuine man with real life experience. His exams can be a bit tough, but if you take note of those specific problems that he emphasizes in class and go to the exam review (lecture before the exam), you can definitely do great. Sit in the front row like I did, it's by far more engaging. Thanks for a great experience Mike!
Professor El Gawly is one of the best professors I've had here at Rutgers. He genuinely cares about his students and even tells you what's going to be on the exams and what's not. As long as you study and show up to class, you should do well on the exams. I like how he relates things to the real world and really gets students to think.
great teacher- show up to class and pay attention and you should get an A
I had Professor Elgawly for both Micro and Macro. I almost failed micro just because of how hard the class is, but he is an excellent professor. He is very approachable and will do everything to help you. His class isn't the easiest, but if you study hard using the textbook and ppts you should be fine. He is one of the best professors at Rutgers
Professor Elgawly is hands-down one of the best professors I've ever had. He explains topics, even difficult ones, with such ease. He helped me understand so many things I didn't grasp in high school microecon. He lays things out, takes his time, repeats important info, and genuinely cares about helping his students. Just make sure u go to class!
Elgawly is incredibly fair. If you take the time to go to lecture and pay attention, you should get at least a B. His lectures were crystal clear and the problems he does on the board in class, usually show up on exams.
I LOVE THIS MAN WHAT AN AMAZING TEACHER!! Best micro teacher take this class with him!!
Professor Elgawly is awesome, he tells you the truth behind some economic policies and why they do/don't work. Go to lecture because he covers some topics that are not in the textbook and will show up on exams. Overall easy class if you took AP Micro in High School.
If I didn't have Professor Elgawly, I probably would not have passed micro. I had a hard time in the class but worked really hard and got by. He explains topics extremely well, relates then to the real world( great lectures!) and has fair exams. His grading makes it easy to pass. You would be making a mistake not to take him if you have the chance.
At first this class was super hard but once I started getting the hang of it it got easier. Micro is hard but his exams aren't too bad especially the final. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you pay attention in lecture you'll learn a lot and a lot of exam questions come from the powerpoints.
Great professor who cares about teaching his students accurate information. As long as you show up and pay attention at lectures you should be fine. MAKE SURE you go to his final exam review he basically shows you what the exam will be. Also, he tends to give away exam questions in lectures so pay attention.
This class might be one of the harder lower-level electives for Economics. Although I personally liked the class, the material, exams, and homework were really hard and I had a hard time understanding the concepts. Professor Elgawly is a great guy however I would recommend taking another easy elective if you want to save your grade ECON389 or 395.
If you are unsure about Economics then take professor Elgawly and he will make you fall in love with it. His lectures often end in tangents about real world examples that are very relevant. If you take notes during lecture he gives you questions similar to those you will see on the exam
He is a good professor. I respect him a great deal. The assessments were really challenging for me but my friends who took Econ in high school adjusted well. I went to office hours a lot and he was a great resource, so that helped my grade a little. The exams are far more difficult than anything he teaches in class which is mad frustrating.
Cares about students, passionate about subject, will repeat the same question until you understand it. Will spend hours with you during office hours, talks about current events.
Good teacher, class is pretty easy and straightforward. Teaches mostly out of the book but occasionally adds extra topics during lecture that only show up on exams. Reading the book alone is enough for a B at least. Handled the COVID-19 situation very well. Curved up an exam after technical difficulties, and gave ample time and accommodations
Elgawly is pretty good, but I wouldn't go much further than that. If you attend the lectures then its a easy to get a B+ or an A, but you'll need to pay attention through some of the most boring lectures ever.
Definitely one of the best professors out there. During this time of online learning, he made a huge effort to make sure our learning was not impacted. Always made sure we were ready for his exams. Exams are not too hard if u go over the slides and review the hw he provides.
Good professor, lecture were clear and helpful for exams. I suggest going to the lecture even though they are not mandatory. Homework was easy. Just study the powerpoints before the exams and you should be fine.
Professor Elgawly is extremely nice and caring. He is always accessible outside of class. He even gives his number in case you need to reach him asap. Online quizzes are really easy and really help your GPA. He is really passionate about subject and it is interesting to attend lectures because he talks about current events.
A solid professor. Took him back in the Spring of 2020 for Micro. He is very accessible outside of class and wants students to come to speak with him if they need to. Grade consists of three exams and three online quizzes. Overall, not too tough of a course, study a bit ahead of time for exams, and you will be fine.
He posts all his slides but each slide contains very little information. He explains everything in more detail while speaking and goes in a lot of detail about the math questions. 3 quizzes and 3 exams. Quizzes are very different from exams and can be done in groups. All quizzes are 50 mc and exams 100 mc but final has some open ended.
very solid prof, super enthusiastic as well. given months to do quizzes and hw and as long as you understand them, the tests are doable as well. got an A and barely attended lectures. super understanding guy.
This man cannot give a solid lecture to save his life. He contradicts himself at least twice a class and boils down core themes to pizzeria metaphors. If he can't frame a question in the context of Krispy Pizza, he can't explain the concept. Only reason I passed was the textbook. He also make you pay $98+ for Sapling, then writes his own exam q's.
He's pretty good, quizzes are open for a whole month he does post slides but not that much info, he writes on them during lecture. Barely went to class but you do need to study a little for the exams for certain question types. Assigns homework that's due usually around the same time as the quiz too, good at explaining and clarifying any questions
He's pretty nice and good at explaining and clarifying any questions you have during and at the end of lecture. Assigns quizzes and homework and gives ab a month to do the quizzes which aren't timed and the exams are similar to the HW and quiz questions. Barely went to lecture but study a little ahead of time for exams.
Nice guy, solid prof. Sometimes goes on tangents but theyre kinda interesting? Def knows what he's talking about. not always super clear but id say 7.5-8/10 he is. Really does want you to succeed. Homework per every chapter but idk maybe its bc corona. Three quizzes and three exams. Not my fav subject but id recommend him if I had to take it
Elgawly is an amazing prof and will answer any question you have. Lots of HW, but if you pay attention and do the readings it's not that difficult. Exams are same level as HW questions so make sure to do them and write down confusing ones. The most annoying part is the 100 question quizzes we had for each unit. Take Elgawly you won't regret it!
Easy A class, but if you want to learn Elgawly is not for you. He spent 3 classes ranting about "socialism bad" and frequently taught his opinions as fact - one good example is him preaching that UBI reduces labor when there's a lot of evidence (and economists) pointing otherwise. We weren't even tested on any of this, it just was a waste of time.
Great professor. A super nice guy, the assignments are manageable, but there's a lot of HW. He really wants his students to succeed. Unfortunately, he doesn't post the recording of the lectures, so I'll recommend not to skip a class.
His lectures can be a lil dry but it's because he's straight to the point. The homework can be tedious but at the same time, it's pretty easy. Elgawy curved the first two exams but not the final because the grades were too high. As a non business major I finished with a high A so getting an A is definitely doable.
Elgawly is a gem. He always takes the time to answer a student's question and provides detailed explanations. He doesn't record lectures so you're better off not skipping class. The exams were a bit difficult but Prof. Elgawly is lenient with curving.
Good professor and lectures. Ties concepts to actual events. Answers questions. Tests are similar to the homework assignments.
I had him for micro which was online, he made it real fun!
If you get a chance to take a class with this man you must do it! Tells you exactly what will be on exams so as long as you pay attention in class his exams are a walk in the park. You will also come away with so much more than the content. Goes off on tangents about real life and really makes you think about the impact of policy on the world.
A very knowledgeable professor who knows what he is talking about and can admit to making mistakes, which only a handful of professors can do. Before every exam, there are about 8 HW assignments and a 100 question quiz due, but he gives plenty of notice and reminders. Exams are exactly like HWs and Quizzes and straightforward with no trickery.
One of my favorite professors at Rutgers. I am glad I took his class. He is very caring and always willing to help you out if you have any trouble. Overall great professor and a great person.
Professor Elgawly is an excellent professor! His lectures are crystal clear and he connects what we learn to current events. He'll get you very interested in economics. Also, he's willing to spend a lot of time with you in office hours and cares a lot about his students. A decent amt of q's in exam come from lecture so its recommended you attend.
Prof. Elgawly is very passionate about economics and connects topics to real life current events. He has crystal clear lectures to the point where you don't need to read the textbook ever. He gives out nice curves, and gives take home quizzes that he gives ample time for which are grade boosters. Not to mention, he's super intelligent and patient.
I loved Professor Elgawly's class! He is always so kind and really went above and beyond to answer any student's question. Outside of basic econ, he touched on some really important government issues like welfare and healthcare. He respected everyone's opinions, and also provided his own insight. Overall, very thorough, clear, and an awesome person
Elgawly is a good professor, but he has his flaws. For one, he had to rush the first unit because he talked too long about how bad socialism is. Also, he's not a generous curver, so you really need to put in the effort for exams, which are a huge chunk of the final grade. His lectures are good though, just attend and pay attention.
I love mike! Straightforward exams and you come out of the lectures with a lot more material than what's ever covered in the textbook. Super nice man and amazing lectures. You'd regret not ever taking this man for econ!
Elgawly is a fair professor. You have to attend lectures because he will go over stuff on the test that isn't directly on the slides. Whenever a test question was unfair he was willing to give points back. He always answered any questions and was willing to take the time to explain. Overall, a good Micro professor that isn't too difficult either.
Probably the best lecture professor i have ever had, but does not mean this class is easy in any way. Show up to his class, do his assignments, and you will be okay. Work load outside of the classroom is optional, there to help you, and trust me, it helps
He's a nice guy, his heart is in the right place, and explains concepts well. I sometimes take issue with the way he does class material. There was a unit where he went over concepts only once in class, it wasn't in the textbook/slides, and he expected us to know it for an exam. Also goes on a lot of ancap anti-left rants. Average class overall.
Passionate and effective at teaching. Sometimes inserts opinions into teaching.
I enjoy his courses. So far, I have taken two classes with him. He brings a welcome new perspective to Rutgers in terms of Economics. His passion for capitalism is not unfounded. He speaks from experience immigrating from a socialist country to the US. If you cannot get past it or have an open mind on other economic theories, don't take his class.
Take Goldhammer if you can, this guy is very overrated. I'm a Republican and he's so right wing in class, that its embarrassing. Not a horrible lecturer, but he's far from being a lenient curver which contradicts some of his other reviews (Avg on mids/final was in the 60's post curve). Exams were 8/10 difficult. Mike is a solid 2.5/10 professor.
Elgawly may share his personal viewpoints at times, but they actually help you gain more from the lecture in terms of understanding the material. He's really passionate about economics and he is very good at lecturing. If you're not open to hearing new perspectives
Take his class. He is an amazing professor and truly cares about each students grades. If you apply yourself and pay attention during lecture you will ACE the class no doubt.
The HW and quizzes are online. Easy way to boost your grade, so do them. The exams are hard. He talks a lot, and has very strong opinions. He reminds you of the timeline of when things are due before every lecture because he doesn't give extensions. You won't fail if you miss a lecture but try not to, he does a good job in explaining and answers qs
Hands down the best and most interesting professor I have taken in my first semester here at Rutgers! If you are looking to just get an easy "A" in economics classes, Elgawly may not be the guy but by no means is he the hardest professor either! Advice I wish I knew before taking this professor, is that the quizzes are a large weight of your grade!
If you are looking for an easy A, this is Definitely your professor. Attending his class is optional. But he provides excellent lectures to help you succeed in exams. Even if you don't attend, the slides will give you everything you need. Most importantly, he teaches the application of economic concepts with real-life examples.
Good at explaining the course content and staying on topic. If you do the online homework and quizzes you should be fine in this class. His lectures are based on slides, which he posts, so even if you don't attend class, it's pretty easy to understand and catch up by taking notes from the slides. Good prof, very understanding, answers emails fast.
he's ight
Not sure where I went wrong with his class, but definitely not even close to easy. Exams are impossible. No extra credit.
He is extremely fair. If you come to the lectures and study a little you will get an A. Some stuff you will only learn if you go to class, so you should go. He looks over the exams in class and tells says what to study for the exam. No surprises at all but not extremely easy either, but honestly not hard, he explains concepts perfectly as well.
Professor Elgawly is a good lecturer. Giving his own opinion on politics, his curves are the reason why I passed this course. Overall, I enjoyed having Professor Elgawly as my Microeconomics professor.
Professor Elgawly is not one who will grant you any leeway for time or makeups for assignments, but he is an efficient lecturer. From an economics perspective he is very right wing politically (I'm very left wing), but those digressions connected back to class material and sometimes helped clarify the concepts. Overall, solid Professor. Four stars.
Elgawly is the best. Very passionate about what he teaches. Attend class and you will get a good grade. 3 long quizzes, don't wait until the last minute. Exams are straight forward. I cannot emphasize enough to attend and take good notes, you will learn a lot from him.
Solid professor for anybody looking to study economics. He inserts his personal beliefs into lectures, but rest assured that he is not combative or condescending when responding to students, and that he offers a different perspective on economic policy that many may not be too familiar with. Study and show up to class for occasional exam freebies!
Great teacher. Explains the material and answers questions very well. Responds very quickly to emails.
Really good lecturer in my opinion. As long as you go to class and pay attention its an easy A. He also usually curves exams. There were 2 midterms and a final. The homework is really helpful in practicing and its all due at the end of each month. I nearly failed micro in highschool but ended with an A this semester so definitely recommend him.
Elgawly is an amazing professor. Conservative Leaning. Class was very enjoyable. Attendance not mandatory, but showing up is beneficial as he gives hints as to what will be on exam. Required purchase of MacmillanLearning($100). Large class. Midterms semi-difficult due to the tight timing. BUT If u study and do the HW, itll fine. Office hours help.
Professor Elgawly really cares for his students and wants to see them succeed. Class is pretty straightforward as long as you attend lectures (which aren't mandatory but I thought they helped) and do the homework assignments which are due before each exam. Grade is based off homework assignments and two midterms and one final.
Great Professor, tough course tho, for those trying to get through economics not best but for those trying to learn economics I highly recommend. Informative and helpful lectures which give a lot of good info on what is going to be on the exam. The exams can be hard But, study well, and come to the exam on time prepared you can succeed very easily
Unpopular opinion, but I think Elgawly is a little overrated. Regardless, he was still a good professor. He seems like he genuinely cares about his students and is accessible outside of class. But compared to other micro profs, his tests seem to be a little harder (still a good prof tho).
He presented Micro in a very logical way so that I barely had to memorise anything, it just all made sense. Do go to lecture because he will mention things you won't find in the homework or quiz. Other than that, just make sure to do your work on time. Yes, he does get a bit political at times, but his views have economic backing so I didn't mind.
Professor Elgawly is super calm, and his teaching pace is so steady that you eventually get more and more interested in this subject. I would definitely take his course in the future if I get a chance. He also gives hints about what kind of questions will appear on the midterms and final exams.
professor elgawly is a very knowledgeable person and a good teacher. He explained topics well so as long as you pay attention in class you will be fine. His exams are difficult though because they are very application-based, so if you dont understand the material, you won't do well. He is also very nice and approachable
Highly knowledgeable, opinionated - thoroughly explains everything on test - exams all MC (always curves) - lecture slides posted online - homework software a little pricey - interesting lectures, likes to talk about real world economics not just course content - very accessible & flexible with meeting times (answers emails/texts quickly)
He is a great professor, second time taking him, and he is one of the few who want you to succeed. His work is more than manageable if you structure your time correctly and his lectures can be fun since he often discusses current events and real-world topics. Overall, great intro to micro and money and banking professor.
Good curve and the three online quizzes are a good grade booster. His slides are really helpful overall the best intro to micro professor
Take him for sure! Good and relatively easy Prof. Those who attend classes: he explains concepts really well in class if you are bad at economics or studying yourself. Attendance is not mandatory so some people did not go. If don't want to go to classes all the time, just beware that he teaches 1 or two concepts in class that are not on the slides.
Elgawly teaches well; he helps explain things in terms that are easy to understand. He does sometimes go on tangents on socialism and distrusting the government which delays class at times. Make sure to study, he gives homework and quizzes out in chunks, so all of it is due within 4-6 weeks after a unit starts, and after that is a test on the unit.
Great prof and has interesting insight on topics discussed in class. His online quizzes are good opportunity to raise your grade if you do not perform too well on tests. Attendance is not mandatory but even his 8:30 am lecture has a good turn out because his lectures are not boring and useful. Would take him again!
Elgawly is a very good professor who knows how to teach us the course material. Despite attendance not being mandatory, Elgawly sometimes tells us what we should and shouldn't remember and teaches us concepts not found in the slides to incentivize us to show up to class. The exams can be tricky, but definitely take Elgawly if you want to learn.
This is my second course with Elgawly. He's my favorite professor I've had at Rutgers. This was my first class that introduced me to finance, and it was a great experience. 3 exams (2 midterms, 1 final). Very fair. Attend class and you'll be fine.
Professor as a person is awesome/chill, but his class is kind of difficult so just make sure to actually read the textbook, try to understand it, and do practice questions/quizzes. He's a pretty loud talker so he keeps you awake and uses pretty relevant examples to get points acrss. Would take him again if I had any econ classes to take!
Great professor. Explains topics clearly and concisely. Go to class because he mentions topics on the exam not posted elsewhere. "Extra Credit": doing optional chapter hw gives you a boost of up to 10 points. Required 100-question quiz per unit (have like a month to do it each time). His pet peeve: the national debt and the evils of socialism lol
This man is amazing, he doesnt take attendance but when i went he would often give answers for the tests. his lectures are funny and he teaches super well. he is very helpful in office hours and the online quizzes and hw are super helpful for learning the material and studying
The lectures that Elgawly gives are very intense, they're full of content but I do like how he does explain them very well and goes through examples with you to help you understand the topic when you are struggling. Grades are only determined by homeworks and quizzes (due at the end of each unit), and tests. The tests are graded heavily, so study!!
A really helpful teacher. Personally experience: macro is more difficult than micro.
I love the way he teaches and his teaching style. if you go to him for help he is always willing to explain things to you. his goal is for people to actually know what he is teaching and understand it. The information is hard but if you do the quizzes on time and the hw and make sure to study well its a good class. make sure to go and I'll do well
Elgawly is probably one of the only lecturers that is able to make a subject I'm not interested in very engaging. He connects the material to policy actually being used in our government. The exams are fair and he's very helpful in office hours. Not really lenient when it comes to extensions and makeups but a great professor nevertheless.
I really enjoyed Professor Elgawly. His lectures were straightforward and easy to understand. Exams weren't particularly difficult but they were very long.
If you don't attend class or put in the effort, you will definitely not do good in Intro to Microeconomics. Professor Elgawly takes time to answer all questions and show example problems/questions for the midterms and final. Truly a caring professor that wants to see his students succeed. Highly recommend taking him for micro and macro.
Professor Elgawly is one of the most passionate professors by far. He genuinely cares about his students learning and understanding the material taught in class, always explains how the content learned in class is important in the real world, and emphasizes the importance of what he teaches. Highly recommend!
Honestly, Professor Elgawly is highly knowledgeable and respectable as a person and in terms of learning Economics. However, missing even one lecture can make a drastic change in studying. I like that he does give us help, but honestly, it is kind of difficult for an intro class. Not trying to insult the professor, he's a great man, just bit hard.
Prof Elgawly is very knowledgeable and very approachable. My only problem is that the lectures had way too much going on. There is so much information for each exam that it's a little difficult to study. He is always open to questions and he will set up a meeting with you if you are struggling. I recommend doing the homeworks after each lecture.
The prof seems like a great guy however the class its self was type difficult. I felt like what was presented in the class was way more simplified than what was expected to be known on the exams. I never felt more hopeless as I studied since I felt like no matter what, I would not do good. You got to WORK in this class unless u naturally smart.
He is not as easy as other comments describe him. Make sure you go to lectures for tests. And even then, you still have to study outside of class to prepare of exams at least 3-4 days in advance. But, if you study his lectures, listen to his lectures, do the quizzes, homework, and learning curves, you will be fine. But, make sure to do all.
Best Econ professor at Rutgers. People who do not do well are those who do not attend lectures and/or do not study properly. As long as you go to all lectures (and pay attention), do everything on time, and study what he tells you to study, macro is extremely easy. He is always willing to help students whenever they need it. You cannot be lazy.
Lectures are super engaging. Although he can go off on tangents, he does incorporate a lot of useful analogies to help us understand concepts better. Make sure to attend all lectures and study the HW and quiz questions. Very easy A. Obviously if you do not want to work hard do not expect to do well in micro or in any other class, for that matter.
Elgawly is a well-spoken professor who teaches very well. He explains things clearly and thoroughly. The homework is not too bad but the 3 quizzes are pretty annoying. The exams are hard though (class avg is 70). Ended up with a C+ because class was hard for me since I didn't properly prepare and didn't grasp the concepts well, B is possible
Really good teacher. I enjoyed attending his lectures and listening to him talk and ramble on about certain topics. Though attendance isin't mandatory, I recommend going to class as he provides certain questions that will reappear on later tests. Also gives a nice curve at the end of the semester.
Elgawly is a great prof! He is always very clear in his lectures and goes into detail. If you only studied and learned with the lectures alone you can easily get a B. The class was pretty simple, 35% was unproctored quizzes.
Great professor, class is kind of hard but he is phenomenal.
Great professor, do the work and you will do well.
I fw Elgawly heavy on some real shi. He is a very tough grader and the class material is very tough, however I would recommend come into the class with some understanding already of micro, like taking it in highschool. Workload is very heavy too to be honest. And teaches very fast in class, but he is understanding, NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS.
The professor has a specific teaching system, but if you engage with it, the class is manageable. Attend lectures, read the free textbook, and use resources like Unstuck ai to prep - that'll help you succeed.
he's funny and nice as long as you put in the effort on your part you will be fine, I didn't physically attend the class cuz my commute is 2 hours and got a B. The 2 midterms and the final are all multiple choice.
Amazing professor, talks extremely passionately about economics, makes you develop an interest regardless of your prior opinions, definitely would take him again, learnt a lot from him.
He's a wonderful professor and is truly passionate about what he's teaching which makes the class engaging. I will say what he teaches in class is simplified to what will be on the exam so prepare well for the exams. I found this class very hard, especially for an intro class but he's willing to help you and is very accessible outside of class.
Good teacher who sets clear dates on assignments and tests. There a a lot of assignments, but for a good reason. There is A LOT of material to go through and he does it at a good pace and explains everything very well. The only downside is he trails about important things to know for the business world, but it won't be on any assignments or tests.
I took him for Micro and Macro, got a B+ in both. Overall great professor, very accessible thru office hours. DO NOT procrastinate his HW/quizzes, you'd be surprised how long his 100 q quiz takes to go thru. Exams are def more complicated than the lectures, so know how to apply the concepts. Sometimes yaps about socialism too much, otherwise chill.
The class is super interesting and the prof is the best. The exams are a bit hard tbh but are all MCQ and quite reasonable. The prof tells us what topics and hw questions to focus on for the exam, making studying a million times easier. He gives NO extensions at all so plz do your hw/quizzes beforehand or else you will get a zero.
Incredible professor and very reasonable. Yes, he doesn't give extensions on assignments, but he also gives a month to complete them. I learned a great deal in this class.
The only intro to micro prof that actually teaches his lectures are very engaging despite his political rants. However, there are virtually no grade boosters for his class. The monthly 100 question quizzes are laborious and you have to do well on them for an A, just pace yourself and don't be lazy, his class is worth it.
This was an unnecessarily difficult class. There is a lot of material to be covered and yet Prof Elgawly will go off tracks on unrelated topics taking away from the lecture and then rushing through everything in the end. The three tests were too long and again too complicated, and the great amount of homework was usually unrelated to the test.
He gave us a month to complete the homeworks and quizzes for each unit. They are both online, and the quizzes are 100 questions. He also shares the powerpoints from class and discusses which topics will be on the exams. Although he does not give extra credit or extensions, he curves the exams a little bit.
Genuinely such a caring professor who wants you to succeed. Provides many resources to do well on the exams like review sessions and learning curves with extra practice problems. Offers office hours twice a week. One of the best professors I've had so far. Take him if you can you won't regret it!
aight STOP GLAZING THIS GUY! He is a really good lecturer.. but lets be real - these 100 question quizzes are not it
wonderful professor. Curves all exams to give students best grade possible. Take him!!
Although I didn't do that well in this class, Elgawly was nice enough to round my final letter grade to C+ as I was a few points off and can tell you about a lecture if you missed it. He doesn't give out extra credit but clearly specifies what will be on the exams in lectures so you should attend them and posts slides.
His lectures are great. While there are no extra credit, he curves the exams.
Super nice guy. Really accessible and always willing to help. Attendance was not mandatory but going was highly reccomended and very helpful. Never really had to read the textbook. Must be careful with pacing the quizzes as the due date always seaks up on you. Tests are a big part of your grade and can be difficult
Gives hints to exams only during lecture. Always willing to help, caring, don't need textbooks. I had him for both Micro & Macro last semester and passed both with a B during a 19-cred semester. No need to be worried about these courses being difficult if taken together if you do the work, practice, and attend lectures. Bring pencils & notebooks.
Elgawly ran a very engaging Macro class. His lectures went outside of the textbook at times to cover world macroeconomic events and even into general career advice which I found very interesting. It was the class I looked forward to the most each week my first semester. 10/10 would recommend.
The class is both high-quality and challenging. There are heavy homework and some questions of exams aren't covered in hm. Additionally, the exams are difficult, and Prof Elgawly doesn't specify which questions are multiple-choice. The first midterm's average grade is 10 points less than my roommate's with a different prof.
Great professor! Not only he talks about microeconomics but also on the real world implications. I learned more about the how the world, economy, and politics from him than any other person. Three exams (final included) and very easy if you go over hw and slides. He hints what stuff will be on the exam so be sure to not miss his lectures.
Great professor. Very engaging and teaches effectively. The topics themselves were still difficult, but his lessons, most of the time, helped with learning. He rambles A LOT, but it's interesting. My only complaint was that he speeds through lessons towards the end and doesn't review all necessary topics until the very last lecture before the exam.
Professor Elgawly is a great professor but he has a tendency to speed through material. Listening to his lectures does helps you with homework but there are always some concepts not on there. He does rant about a bunch of random topics but it is econ-related. You need to study for the tests otherwise it'll be pretty difficult.
He talks about irrelevant topics in class, going to lecture or skipping does not really make a difference as you end up having to learn everything on your own anyway. I came into this class with really high expectations and he really crushed them. My friend has the other professor and we are doing similarly on exams.
Worst mistake ever. He is always going on political rants and spreading misinformation that has nothing to do with the class. On top of that his lectures are boring. His quizzes are so tedious even if you start early. He tells us what will be on the exam then proceeds to put difficult topics that were never mentioned or on the homework or quiz.
awful. this man is so boring i could barely open my eyes in lecture. he goes over things in lecture that aren't put on the slides which is plain evil. he tells us whats on exams but then he focuses on the hardest parts of the topics. exams are long and hard. gives quizzes that are completely different from what is on exams but says itll help us.
Boring, learned nothing in lectures, talks about his political views too much and I'm a conservative but I still think he's too biased.
Professor Elgawly is, without a doubt, one of the best instructors I've had at Rutgers. He's incredibly passionate about the material and consistently ties concepts to real-world examples, making the class engaging and practical. While the exams were a bit hard, I genuinely learned the most in his course compared to any other during my time here.
Elgawly is often hyped up by a lot of students, but he truly is just an average professor. His lectures are quite boring and nothing special, and his slideshows don't really help with the homework. He has more hw than any of the other macro profs, and his exams are pretty difficult. his best part is how he reviews what will be on the exam before.
honestly love this dude! was super clear eveytime we had an exam, gave us everything we needed to study and usually told us exactly what hw questions were going to be on. He usually reviewed incredibly fast so it was hard to write but it was so helpful anyway! Exams were ok because of his reviews. His lectures were great. Wish I could take again!
Don't listen to those whining about Elgawly. As someone who took Micro with a different professor and macro with him, let me tell you, this man is arguably the best professor in the economics department thus far. I learned way more and did way better in the class compared to the professor I had for Micro. Do lectures/hw and you'll pass easily
Elgawly is a cool guy. His lectures are a lot of slides but he gives IRL examples for each topic which definitely helped me understand and learn better. As you have prolly heard yes the 100 quesitons are tedious and annoying but they are very helpful for the exam. Last thing i'll say is he gives advice to his students for things in the real world.
This is a fairly difficult class. To do well, you need to do well on the 100 question quizzes and re-do each highlighted problem to know how to solve it for the exam. Quiz is 30% so earn a high grade. Make sure you know how to do inverse demand functions from lecture. Exam 1 has a lot about elasticity, Exam 2 is harder
Elgawly is the best econ professor you're going to get. He has quizzes and HWs which help pad your grade. Highly recommend going to lectures and taking notes bc he tells you what's going to be on the exam. He's very real and uses his own experience to "appeal to your intellect." Exams are hard but I would take him again.
Won't lie, the exams are hard and you need to know your stuff. 1st & 2nd exam were HARD but his final was easy - he said exactly what slides to know in the review and if you study those, guaranteed 85+ on the final. He also curves. HW makes up a large % which is nice. Go to lectures - he does stuff he won't post later. Take him over Raymond Stone
awesome prof, great lectures. just pace yourself on the mountain of work he gives every month. exams are difficult too so make sure to go to class and take notes
Half of these good reviews must be from bots. This professor was painfully average. I don't get why everyone glazes him. He assigns hw/quizzes that were tedious and unhelpful for the hard exams. Going to his lectures was useless because he rambles so much that you have to teach the material yourself. Only good thing about him is that he curves.
Very nice guy. Idk why other people complaining about his tests. They were light work, and I didn't even show up to a singular class. I just did the homework in my free time (missed a few), and took the test. The test took me like maybe half an hour max. Too light. Great professor, super nice. 11/10
lol dont listen to the poor reviews, they prolly don't understand econ. If you aren't good at it, go o class pay attention do the homework and quizzes and pace yourself. Ask questions if you are confused, the first 2 exams are not really that bad the final Is indeed harder but set yourself up well with the first two exams. First exam ismostly micro
his tests are hard asf. dont listen to the others. you gotta study a lot just to land around a B and if you're smart and gifted at econ, you'll get an A on his exams. the only thing that will boost ur grade a lot are the homework quizzes, which are 100 questions.
He is a great professor. I had him for both intro to micro and macro. His class is very organized, you will always know when things are due. Please go to the lectures. If I went at 8:30am for two semesters, you can do it too. That is what helps the most with the quizzes and exams. He explains things thoroughly and will tell you what is on the exam.
Not sure why you guys hype him up so much. His lectures were useless, and most of my class struggled on exams even with curves. I did fine, but only because I taught myself basically everything. Homework and quizzes didn't help. If you want to do well, rely on outside resources. With the way you guys glaze him, you should just make a fan club atp.
Honestly, the guy mumbles. I sat fairly close to the front, and I still could not understand the guy. I even studied every day for his exams and got all assignments in on time but that still could not help me with the class.
made a ton of real-world connections which were super helpful. he answered questions very clearly. lectures contained all the real info we needed for hw+exams. he told us exactly which slides/questions/topics would be on exam. tons of hw and the quizzes are 100 questions, so you have to start early. responds to emails quickly
He is a good professor, and he always comes prepared. However, many topics require time outside the class to be fully grasped. Mainly, he just has wayyyy too much hw. Having end-of-chapter quizzes plus an end-of-chapter quiz is insane. I would not take him again just for the quiz work. For an econ minor elective, this is genuinely too much.
Don't take macro with him, take it with Goldhammer or anyone else. Tests are hard and he gives 100-question quizzes before exams. He goes off on tangents about irrelevant topics. Attendance isn't required, but he says stuff that aren't on the slides. Avoid unless you wanna study a lot.
Professor Elgawly is definitely a passionate instructor. I liked that he often provided real world examples in class; he do sometimes go off topic and into politics though. On top of that, his political views could be considered too extreme. He does mumble but just sit closer to front. Course is hard so attend lectures and don't except easy A.
you're given a good 2-3 weeks before assignments and quizzes are do. he does say a lot of stuff that aren't on the slides that show up on the tests, especially those articles (make sure to read them, he posts them on canvas). attendance not necessary and he lowkey rambles and has pretty extreme economic/political views.
He's a chill guy. Lectures are good although sometimes he just kinda talks really fast. He gives very good real life examples that connect to the concepts you're learning about. Opinions always vary but I found it harder than Micro. 3 100 question quizzes that are tedious, but an easy 30% of your grade.
No doubt one of the best professors. Had him for Intro to Micro in Spring 2024 and Intro to Macro in Fall 2024 and I always looked forward to attending his classes twice a week. With 2 exams and 1 Final, it's imperative you attend class and take notes. He clearly tells you what you need/don't need to remember for the exams to save your time.
Best instructor I ever had at Rutgers. Always helps you study effectively for the exams and uses real-world examples in class to elaborate. Had him for Micro, Macro, and MBF, and I adapted to his style so easily across all of his classes. Take him and you'll learn more than you think!
Great professor but u do have to study hard if uve never taken econ before. Sometimes hed go on tangents abt the same thing for a while during lectures but hes good at emphasizing points. Attendance isnt mandatory but u should go to class. Exams r chill nothing hard but u still have to study
He's a good, solid Prof, you get what you put in (I fumbled a 10 point quiz 💀). He doesn't post additional material on canvas, just lecture slides. If you hate speech-heavy lectures, get ready to self-study. Come to lecture, do the quizzes & HWs, and attend the review session of class before the exam. You'll do fine. No extensions AT All & no EC
If you're taking this class, while attendance isn't mandatory, you should still go. He read from slides but also added relevant information when necessary. He also tended to go on tangents, but honestly, that made the class more interesting.
While he does give some valuable information during lectures, he's mainly just reading off the slides, which he posts on Canvas anyway. Rambles alot. Wish he focused more on formulas/practice questions
Genuinely wants students to learn and makes lectures engaging and useful beyond just the classroom. Goes pretty fast in lectures sometimes in order to cover all the content, but as long as you learn how to apply the material you're good. Also has a helpful review session class before exams so you know exactly what topics are covered to study.
Only writing this review because I was extremely attracted to this muscular, bald man with his shiny globe of a head. I loved when he crossed his arms and stood in that pose, really highlighted his brachioradialis muscle!!!! Would 100% recommend taking him.
